After watching the game today I think we are in need of a winger with pace and who can put in a good cross.That way we will have more a threat and we won't have Johnno getting caught out of position on the right when he goes forward.Someone like Aaron Lennon.I know we can't get him, but if we could get someone like him I think we could pose a real threat.What do you think Ed? {editor's note - I think Johnson should be playing there, Kelly in as right back, then we won't be exposed by Johnson's abysmal defending and will get the benefit of his forward runs.}

Just heard on ssn tat liverpool were considering a move for carlton cole. . . . wouldn't be a great buy his very on and off and doesn't score enough for me

Liverpool outs:
Charles Itandje
Damien Plessis £1m
Nabil El Zhar £1m
Emiliano Insua loan
Andras Simon £0.5m
Jordy Brouwer £0.5m
TOTAL: £3m

Liverpool ins:
David Bentley £9m

Roy declined interest in Toivonen in his post match conference today! Stressing the lack of width, Roy has touted Spurs reject David Bentley as the answer. He's homegrown, quick and a good crosser.

25 man squad (BOLD= homegrown)

GK: Reina, JONES
DEF: JOHNSON, DARBY, KELLY, CARRAGHER, Agger, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Aurelio, KONCHESKEY
MID: BENTLEY, Maxi, GERRARD, Poulsen, Merieles, Lucas, SPEARING, Jovanovic, COLE
ST: Torres, Kuyt, Babel, Ngog, PACHECO

Total: 11 homegrown (9 over 21, 2 under 21)

Why the f* * are we selling Laurie Dalla Valle? The Fulham scouting staff apparently rate him so highly that they are suggesting he is good enough to go straight into their first team. Yet, Hodgson admits he has not had a "proper" look at him and yet is prepared to let him go! Question: Who is actually managing the club, Purslow or Hodgson? We are buying "solid" but over the hill Premiership professionals like Konchesky yet giving away our future stars. Anyone who follows the youth and reserve teams knows how highly Dalla Valle is rated yet we are letting him go so cheaply! Hodgson seems to be building a mid-table team. I remain to be convinced he is good enough to be Liverpool manager. I desperately hope I am wrong but I cannot see use finishing in the top half of the table if things carry on as they are. Liverpool were very very poor today and lucky to escape with a win, a draw would have be generous on today's performance.

LFC Rumours
All Liverpool need now is a support striker for Torres. I hope Carlton Cole will become a Liverpool player because he has:

1) english nationality.

2) He is over six foot and is very strong.

3) On his day can be compared to drogba.

4) Can score his fair share of goals.

5) The physical atributes of his game will take pressure off torres especially from defenders that use rough house tactics.

Hope C.Cole rumours are true. (See caught offside)

29 Aug 2010 23:16:00

Carlton Cole is not good enough for Liverpool, what do you think ED? {editor's note - I don't rate him at all. He has a fair bit of ability but he doesn't use it to the best.}

29 Aug 2010 23:01:19
To the person who asked of Konchesky was at the match today, Yes he was mate! Cameras flicked onto him twice!

29 Aug 2010 22:56:10

OMG, Carlton Cole, are we looking to try finish mid table or what, me thinks it would be a pretty poor signing especially when he could probably bring in the likes of Toivonen or Van Wolfswinkel for decent enough money! i think meireles is a great signing and to be honest i thought poulsen did ok today!Well Konchesky looks a cert but i'd also like to see some of the following coming in

Van der Vaart
Luiz Suarez
Toivonen/ Van wolfswinkel
Clint Dempsey
Arda Turan

What you think about any of the above?

Wolfswinkel and toivonen have never played in the premier league.Once certain fans hear a foreign name they jump all over it, have you ever heard of toivonen or wolfswinkel before they were linked with liverpool, how much of turan have you seen.Will you's please stop the crap and get your head out of the clouds.

29 Aug 2010 22:53:08
Does anyone know if konchesky was the the match

29 Aug 2010 22:44:47
Some of the people posting on here do not know what they are talking about.

TO THE GUY WHO SAID Liverpool will try to bid for Hulk or Aguero and may use Ryan Babel or ALberto Aquilani as a part-exchange, AQUILANI HAS ALREADY BEEN LOANED TO JUVENTUS!

29 Aug 2010 22:41:59
If we want to get top four finish in epl. .we clearly need new left side attacker. .

please roy, DON'T fu* ing waste you little money on someone who you will play as a sub. .

get ashley young. . it will do the trick.

and.

get real liverpool fan, don't annoy us with the rumours liv will sign expensive striker signing. . .we are not man.city. bcuz we are all full of debt. thank to fu* ing AMERICAN. .

29 Aug 2010 22:38:58
Ed, was Paul konchesky at the match today?
{Editor's note - I was not watching the game today}

29 Aug 2010 22:35:51
PLZ LEAVE BABEL ALONE HE MAY NOT BE CONSISTENT BUT WITHOUT HIM WE WOULDNT BE IN EUROPE he also scored winner at old trafford KEY SUB

29 Aug 2010 22:35:44

Everything we know leads me to believe tht we wud be priced out of any deal for aguero and im not saying i think we will sign him but the more his name is mentioned and the way roy likes to deal with transfers (quietly and behind the scenes) and the fact that for the latter half of last season everyone was so convinced he was gonna be a chelsea player this season and now i hear nothing of him goin there the more it creeps into my mind that he is exactly the type of player roy is looking for and that aguero himself might just want to play for the english club he admired as a youngster and also link up once again with nando. either way tho i hope to god! we do not sign carlton cole! nooooo no, no.
also i would like ED's thoughts on my words on aguero and wat u think of the possibility of carlton cole in a liverpool shirt ?
{Editor's note - I do not think Cole will be signed and I think Aguero will cost too much for Liverpool atm unless a takeover happens}

Re:
A simple question - have Liverpool got their allocation of non home grown players yet? If so, posters should perhaps say for every signing of a non-home grown player by Tuesday, how they will replace.

I wondered this this morning and reckoned that after Masch goes we will only have 14 of the 17 slots for over 21 non-homegrown players filled. I was going to post that this meant we could be on the verge of signing three more non-homegrown players. However, then I realised that it is almost certain that by the end of the year new owners will be in place which means more money is likely to be available and the new owners might want one or two marquee signing(s) in the January window - I therefore expect that only one or (max 2) non-homegrown players will be signed by Tuesday. I suspect that Aqua's departure might have been making space for not only the signing(s) in this window but for the intended January signing(s) that Roy might have already pencilled in.

Editor's note - I can tell you one thing, Fletcher would get in the Liverpool team. . . . . . . . . sorry but utter carp. same with carrick. .same with hargreaves. same with either of the eavans' same with paddy mcguinnes(o'shey). .hes not as good as danny murphy. . SMF (hes not even a good scottish player)
{Editor's note - Is that why all these players have got, 2 premiership titles, 3 carling cups, 2 community shields, 1 Champions league medal + runners up medal, a Fifa Club World Cup, all in the past 3 years. What have Liverpool won? Also Fletcher, Evra, Valencia and Rooney were in PFA team of the year last season, how many Liverpool players were?}

29 Aug 2010 22:24:01

Hi Ed,

Just wondering if you think the Carlton Cole thing is all just a smoke screen to cover a big big signing? do you have any news regarding this or anything else within the club or are you outta da loop at the min with the new regime?
Also what would your views be on the following

Suarez
VDV
Diarra M
Toivonen
Wolfswinkel
Bentley

I'd really love to see Clint Dempsey coming, think he is highly underrated!

Thanks, Big C {editor's note - unfortunately pretty much everyone is out of the loop, Roy makes the decisions on his own, so it is very hard to get any definite news until the deal is in negotiations. There has been an inquiry about Cole, but I have no idea if it has gone any further. I would prefer Dempsey myself, an excellent player in my opinion, and he can play a number of positions.}

29 Aug 2010 22:23:35

Good old Luke Young eh! !

29 Aug 2010 22:15:40
Please Roy, go for C. Cole as this lad could be our Collymore and Ronaldo (at their best) wrapped into one player, I really believe it. Power, strength, ability. YNWA

29 Aug 2010 22:14:09
The telegraph thing was a question ed? Sorry. So? {editor's note - I don't believe Roy was given any money other than what he raised through sales.}

29 Aug 2010 22:13:53

There are alot ov people on here talkin about this player or that player comin in, no-one saw the Meireles transfer, no-one really know except roy an purslow an i think there will be one more surprise along the way

29 Aug 2010 22:11:37

Judging by the Raul mereiles signing from Porto its obvious Roy Hodgson keeps his targets very quiet, so we could talk about every striker in europe none of us have a clue what Roy is thinking. he has said today its not Ola toivonen, whoever it is he woll not be a big signing we don't have the money, lets just pray he is not thinking about Carlton Cole, he is as over rated as Imbrahimovic! !

29 Aug 2010 22:05:46
According to the telegraph today, h and g promised hodgson 12 million plus sales. Does this therefore mean that hodgson is not spending money given or that h and g broke another promise?

he spent the money on raul merieles and hes still got the money from masher left

Liverpool Rumours
A simple question - have Liverpool got their allocation of non home grown players yet? If so, posters should perhaps say for every signing of a non-home grown player by Tuesday, how they will replace.

Sharkey.'

Home-grown players are:
Gerrard
Cole
Johnson
Carragher
Spearing
Darby
Jones
Konchesky

Squad at the moment:
GK - Reina, Jones*
RB - Johnson*, Darby*
CB - Carragher*, Skrtel
CB - Agger, Kyrgiakos
LB - Konchesky*, Aurelio, Insua*?
RM - Maxi, Kuyt
CM - Gerrard*, Meireles
CM - Poulsen, Lucas, Spearing
LM - Babel, Jovanovic
CF - Cole
ST - Torres, N'gog
23 players - 8/ 9(Depending on Insua)
So we could add two more players, but only likely to add one, that being a striker.

Sharkey, do you have any idea of who this striker is, as you seem to be 'in the know' and have very consistent, reliable posts.

29 Aug 2010 22:03:24

Has anyone else noticed that we already have a player in our squad who is pottentially as good a midfielder as mascherano??
i truly believe dirk kuyt would do fantastic in the centre. hes very disciplined. good at tackling, hes very strong, and good at harrassing players, he can pass, and he knows how to attack. he hasnt got the pace to play wide right, but centre midfield is perfect for him. it would allow us to push johnson to right wing (as hes rubbish at defending), and then bring kelly into right back, hes a much better defender!

any one agree?

29 Aug 2010 22:03:22

Yano to be fair to roy hes makin moves that rafa never did. He's brought in decent signins in cole, meireles and konchesky (far better the aurelio an has a good cross) and he's tryin to sign a striker. Me personally carlton cole doesn't make me think we're goin for for a top 4 finish and if u asked me I use me head an go for huntelaar considerin milan have pato and just signed the swedish camel (imbrahimovich). I'd even have rodellega from wigan before cole. What do ya reckon ed and do u have anythin that might happen before window shuts excludin the obvious!
{Editor's note - No am not sure what is happening at the minute but I think if Liverpool are to go for a top 4 finish you should have got either Rodellega or Huntelaar}

Positives today are a clean sheet and we won 3 points!
anyway, i am still searching for info regarding the striker issue, and i came across this article that might add some clout to the luis suarez post that he may sign for us.
Ajax Financial Director Jeroen Slop has admitted for the first time that the Dutch giants will have to sell top players including Maarten Stekelenburg, Gregory Van der Wiel, Luis Suarez, and Jan Vertonghen.

The club's Financial Director has put Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City on red alert, along with a host of European giants after admitting the famous club will have to sell its top talent if they fail to get past Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League.

Top Ajax players have interested a host of Premier League clubs with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger following centre-back Jan Vertonghen and goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

While Chelsea and Manchester United have both showed consistent interest in Luis Suarez and Gregory Van der Wiel. Liverpool have also followed both players however it is unknown what transfer budget Roy Hodgson has left for the rest of the summer.
Big spending Manchester City have also been linked with right-back Van der Wiel and Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez; however, manager Roberto Mancini announced the signing of Inter Milan's Mario Balotelli today, and is set to unveil Aston Villa's James Milner in the next 48 hours, which could be the last of City's summer spending.

The Financial Director of Ajax, Jeroen Slop blamed Marco van Basten for the financial plight at the club and admitted the losses have been huge at the Dutch giants:

"Because of the 35 million euro van Basten could spend, as it turned out unprofitable new players, Ajax end up in the red. Oleguer, Dario Cvitanovic, Evander Sno, Rob Wielaert, Miralem Sulejmani, Ismail Aissati. Tell me which was a good purchase. "

Slop admits if the Dutch club fail to progress in the Champions League, the club's star players will be sold:

"Ajax last season recorded a loss of 21 million euros because of missing out on the group stage of the Champions League achievement. We cannot afford the same loss rate and will be forced to sel, l and top players are not excluded."
i hope this helps a
little ed!

Am i the only one who would be happy for Cole to join? Don't get me wrong no Aguero but we will get him at a decent price and be better than any of the other strikers we got there apart from Torres of course. Plus he won't cost too much i hope we give him a chance if he joins alongside Torres sick of this 1 striker business. I do think tho we will be signing 2 strikers. I wanna see the team go 3-4-1-2 against the smaller teams esspecially at home we were very defensive today but i suppose missing cole we didn't have a cm that's attacking as gerrard was playing joes position. Hopefully be more attacking when joes back and gerrards back in mid with the new guy Moralis.

The road to the top 4 may not be a journey folorn as many had mooted after the first couple of games.

We have to remember that Citeh will struggle on the road for at least 6 months as they gel and get used to the EPL. I don't think Mancini is either a good communicator or mana manager so keeping a bunch of pre-madonnas together will be a challenge for anyone.

Secondly Manure, Gooners and Chavs and LFC are the only 4 clubs in the land who are used to playing CL week in and week out followed by EPL at the weekend. It is a knackering experience for any club and it will be even harder for TH who historically (as Hansen said) will flatter to deceive then let you down in turn.

Villa look pony and frankly I can't beleive the blue noses didn't win that game today.

If we bring in one of OT / BR / CC / we should be in good place to deal with most sides in Europa league too and have enough in the tank to squeeze into 3/ 4th place.

Manure are running on fumes at the moment, its not wishful thinking quite simply assess the following.

GK is getting older like proper old and and eventually they all do a Seamen and then the will be screwed. Vidic is =nt half the player he was 2 seasons ago and Rio is well just Rio. Flectcher isn't good enough to get into many sides in the top 10. Nani is still eratic and lets hope he gets too big for his boots like the other greaser who left a while back. Scholes and Giggs are the best 2 form players but they can't play more than about 20-25 games per season as SAF wouldn't want them to burn out without back up.

They are going to need Rooni and Lazy Bones to have a blinder for the entirety of the season. I can't wait to see them faulter when the actually play a side who want to play football and move them around a bit.

IMHO Chavs are still favourites to lift the league but that's not the end of the world with Fatty Lamps our with a bilateral hernia for the next 6 weeks. LOL They are getting old and they can't attract HG talent.

Gooners will collapse when Cesc actaully signs for Barca before year end.

I am not going to predict all is rosey at HQ but we have a good man in charge and the Wanks on their way out soon.

Keep Faith

{Editor's note - I can tell you one thing, Fletcher would get in the Liverpool team}

29 Aug 2010 21:37:40

Do you think, perhaps, that the leaking of LFC's "enquiry" about C.Cole could be a tactic to push another team we're dealing with into agreeing a deal on an altogether more attractive striking target?

Liverpool Rumours
SKY SPORTS NEWS have made a mistake, the player Liverpool are enquiring about is Scott Parker. SSN are merely assuming its Cole but trust me its Scott Parker, which is why is refusing to sign his bumper new contract. Coy Roy will pull another shocker out the bag. Expect the Wolf as the new striker. .

Carlito knows best.

Why would we go for scott parker now when we have just bought a midfielder. Roy himself said we are done in that department and he said the money we have now goes towards konchesky and a striker.

Some of you are begining to make me laugh!
Why is everyone hating on Carlton Cole?
I happen to think he would be a great signing.
we have no money ffs and i would take Carlton over Forlan, Adebayor , Toivelen or whoever else just for the fact that he is english, and as we all know
big signings mean big wages big agent fees
You all need to get a grip of yourselves

I really hope liverpool buy david bently as his crossing is the best in prem and dead balls he is quality (beckham like), this will allow us to play kuyt as a 2nd striker. press believable if you want bently and unbelievable for don't want

If the reports are true, however SSN's isn't always reliable (especially when it is reported as "Sky Source's"), we are in talks with West Ham re Carlton Cole.

Cole has talent no question , but I've always seen him as a "nearly" player, a player who offers so much but never ever seems to deliver, somewhat like Ryan Babel, however in saying that Cole has had far more chances to showcase his "talent".

Cole has so far averaged 8.33 goals in his three seasons at West Ham, and perhaps playing in a "superior" team this average may improve, but MAY is a big little word.

If we are looking at the player, then I would say we are turning attention towards him for two reasons - Home grown, and the fact that he has Premier league experience.

The price factor will come into play, his price would probably be similar to that of Toivonen (Real sniffing around so we can't afford a price war), which I don't think we can afford, which makes what I read re a deal involving Babel and cash seem realistic, however if Roy is to push ahead with this deal I would personally try and ship Lucas out instead (Shelvey, homegrown to play in his place), but I doubt if Lucas would go to East London willingly, (would anybody).

Roy Hodgson has set his sights on adding another striker to Liverpool's ranks before the close of the transfer window.
Bayern Munich hit man Mario Gomez and West Ham United's Carlton Cole have all been linked with a move to Anfield before the window closes at midnight on Tuesday but Hodgson has ruled out a switch for PSV Eindhoven striker Ola Toivonen. "He's a good player but not the profile I'm looking for, " he said.
Konchesky is expected to finalise his £4million move from Fulham shortly with highly-rated youngster Lauri Dalla Valle tipped to head in the opposite direction.
Hodgson added: "One of our young players, a very talented young lad that Fulham have fancied for a long time, is going in the other direction and that's holding it up a little because he has to have a medical. "I'm sincerely hoping it's just a technical hitch and that Paul will sign in the next couple of days."

Hey ed, love the site.whats your opinion on carlton cole?i think its a joke and roy needs his head examined! {editor's note - I don't rate Cole at all, he is injury prone, lazy and not particularly good or prolific. But then Zamora was pretty much the same before he joined Fulham.}

Asked if Swedish forward Ola Toivonen could arrive at Anfield, Hodgson said: "No. Unlikely. He's a good player but not the profile I'm looking for."

Those are Roy's words.AJI"

Interesting, i wonder if he means his style or we're looking for bigger fish so to speak. I've given up trying to predict what's going to happen in this transfer window as clearly everything is being kept under wraps.

29 Aug 2010 19:14:37
Carlton cole! !come on roy, after paul konchesky! !roy you are losing the plot and spending our valuable money on players that are not liverpool standard.worse than rafas signings! !

Just heard on talksport that pool in talks over c cole coming to pool this was in the sunday people also? good player i don't know? we need a winger ashley young go 4 him roy

29 Aug 2010 19:08:56
Why did liverpool not go for kevin davies frm bolton good player can hold the ball up can score and would give 100% every game i think torres would get alot of goals from him just a thought. . . . . .

29 Aug 2010 18:42:01
To the second guy:
("RH says in a interview after the game that Ola Toivonen isn't the type of player we want so maybe were looking for a big striker who can hold up play."
eh, just watched and he said nothing about toivonen)

maybe you watching the wrong interview but roy does say about Toivonen.

Liverpool to make a surprise signing by the end of the transfer window! I'm only posting once and never again!

Sergio Busquets Burgos will come in as a sweetner for the masch debacle!

Thank god you're never posting again. ;)

We played okay today, not great, and we got a result which is the important thing. I couldn't single out any player who didn't perform. Lucas gave a pretty good performance, Poulsen was solid, Kuyt was very good. Most importantly, Torres looked fit again. I think we can all be happy with that result today.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

If you think Lucas was good, Poulson was solid and Kuyt was very good today, you do not know anything about how to play football.

We should be dominating teams like WBA at home and beating them comprehensively if we harbour any hope of finishing in the top four. We were somewhat fortunate to get the win today - do not delude yourself.

A win is a win and hopefully with the addition of Meireles confidence will be boosted for the next very tricky game away at Birmingham - let's hope the lads come through the International break unscathed.

Poulsen a crap buy? give the guy a chance for godsake, after 15- 20 games make a judgement.knee jerk reactionaries are a joke.

29 Aug 2010 18:13:32
The team didn't play well today that is FACT, but we did WIN! and whilst I would love to see us play well and win, I'll take poor to average and three points every time (even though I'll be hoarse from swearing, cursing, etc, etc).

I could go on about Lucas, Poulsen, Johnson, Kuyt, etc, etc, like most detractors, but I won't it's a fruitless exercise and my rant won't change anything, however one point I will make and it's something that has been blantantly obvious (to me anyway), is that the team needs an injection of pace from somewhere - either in midfield, or an out and out winger, who can go wide will stay WIDE, whilst trying to get to the byline.

I don't know what Roy's tactical plan is when he deploys Jovanovic (I don't know how he wants him to play, positionally or otherwise), but I would hope that in the future games he pleads with the lad to stay wide!

ED - what's your opinion of Babel, and do you think he will be given a chance or given the boot? I would personally like to see him stay.

{Editor's Note: If Babel overcomes what appears to be him being lazy and plays like we know he is capable, then we should give him a chance.}

Liverpool Rumours
Right here we go again.
The latest on the takeover saga is that shiek Mohammed has completed DD.and so has khaliffa and also a certain larry Ellison.
Take your pick which you want to own us

In Reply - lets face it everyone, the takeover of the club is the most important thing at the moment, just as long as the team can get themselves through the next few weeks and pick up as many points as possible (whatever the performance).
In terms of new owner - I feel from what I have read and seen Sheik Mohammed Al Maktoum would be a fantastic new custodian of the club. He is has massive personal wealth £18bn, loves sport (horseracing and football), apparently has supported Liverpool for many years and he would see it as a great honour to own the club. It would also be a matter of honour for an 'honourable gentleman' that he attempts make the team great again.
It also seems that no none will buy the club for anywhere near the £500m H&G want. It is more likely all bidders will wait until October when they will get the club very much cheaper. The money saved can then be spent on getting the New Anfield built (77,000 capacity for 1977) and some new players in January.
I don't care what the Southern media and pundits say but any player worth his soul would still consider it a great career move to join Liverpool FC.

29 Aug 2010 18:00:15
I wish people would stop carping on about Ashley young cos he's no different from Ryan babelfish.

29 Aug 2010 17:57:14

Lpool need to sign a player that can play as a striker and a winger, just like jova or kuyt, but with more flair and creativity. This would also save buying 2 separate player

answer is byran ruiz. what a signing this would be could play as a winger and a striker

29 Aug 2010 17:54:55
With all this talk of lpool owners freeing up money for RH if its true( which i doubt) thenn this could be our chance to sign some wingers, something we are desperately in need of. id love A.Young but i don't think that will happen so bentley maybe a more realistic target. for the a Striker id LOVE us to go back to porto and maybe bid for HULK. i mean the potential of a Torres Hulk partnership is mothwatering. but then again this is all wishfull thinking.
GOOD LUCK LFC YNWA!

Pasted but a lastest quote:

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson on the BBC: "Fernando (Torres) is fighting to be at his best and the goal will do him the power of good. This is a very good result. If West Brom play like that every week they will take points off a lot of teams." He also distances the club from a move for Ola Toivonen, saying: "He doesn't fit the profile of the type of player we want."

Knives are out i see. Give the manager at least a dozen games with a team he's assembled before writing us off. If Torres and Gerrard want to go come Jan then let them, everyone bitched when Keegan left as well, but no one is bigger than the club. If we play poorly with Meireles, Konchesky and Cole in the team then you're free to btich, until then stick to Championship Manager.

Why the hell did i get thumbs down? for stating the truth? this proves van der varrt will stay with madrid

Rafael Van Der Vaart has snubbed interest from the Premier League after vowing to repay Real Madrid for helping his wife Sylvie through breast cancer.

The Dutch playmaker has been linked with a string of Premier League clubs and Van der Vaart has made no secret of his appreciation for Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Van der Vaart wanted to seek assurances over his role in Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid side following the arrival of Mesut Ozil.

Mourinho has not guaranteed the 27-year-old a regular starting place and that sparked interest from the Premier League.

But the Dutchman has decided to stay and fight for his place at the Bernabeu and show just why Madrid spent £11m on him from Hamburg in 2008.

Van der Vaart's model girlfriend Sylvie was diagnosed with cancer in June last year but is on the way to recovering after post-op chemotherapy.

And the Real Madrid star is desperate to fight for his place to repay the way the Madrid doctors helped his wife through her battle with the disease.

THIS CLARIFIES
- he isn't leaving
- THE CLUB DOCTORS DID HELP HER BATTLE CANCER

back me up please ed
dan
also expect konchesky to be a liverpool player monday

I agree pool a dosgrace first half y oh y do we persist with 2 holding midfielders negative an again no width all going threw the middle i know its early days but looks like theres no pride in that jersey today we need to buy ashley young now please does anyone agree or is it just me?? ?

29 Aug 2010 15:56:01
Another crap performance, we should be aiming to win games like these 3 or 4 nil, and not play with 2 defensive holding midfielders and a left back that won't cross the half way line .
fatboy Insua still a liverpool player , I am no fan of his, but for games like these he should be ahead of Agger .
I don't understand Woy 's thinking last week he gambled on 442 away from home to a very strong midfield . today he is doing the opposite .
What is the bets , first sub at ~ 60 to 65 minutes . Babel or Pacheco in and Jovanivic out.

I think Kuyt and Jova will be 2nd choice wingers. Expect 2 new signings who will play on either wing e.g. Young and Aguero (not saying they will sign but just an example of the kind of players).

29 Aug 2010 14:45:45
Ed. .I know this aint a rumour, but because some people might be too lazy to go to the Telegraph site themselves, I just HAD to post some of the most Important parts from this VERY enlightening and interesting article for the rest of our red brothers. .Please let it on (Rumours) as it might make some think twice before posting crazy shoping lists! . . .

"". . What Liverpool have lacked in recent years – even when the midfield axis of Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso was at its destructive, creative best – is dynamism.
. .That is exactly what Meireles provides. First for Boavista, then for Porto and Portugal, his role has been to prompt attacks, not with the range of passing that makes Alonso such a rare gem, but with his relentless energy, his movement, his thrust. Whereas the Basque controlled space, Meireles fills it. If he can replicate the form which earned him the move, the Portuguese will bring an end to the sight of Liverpool lost in stasis. .
. .Whereas Mascherano is an attack dog of a midfield player, hunting down and ruthlessly eliminating his targets, Poulsen exists to guard, patrolling in front of the back four, positioning himself and picking off danger. The Dane will control Liverpool's shape, switch the angles of attack. He will play in the horizontal. Meireles adds a vertical element. .
. .Yet while the capture of Meireles – and Paul Konchesky, who arrived on Merseyside for a medical on Saturday ahead of a £3 million move – provide an answer to where Liverpool are heading on the pitch, they serve as a reminder that only questions remain off it.
Most poignant, as the transfer window draws to a close, is the inquiry as to why Hodgson's revolution did not begin to take shape until the final weekend of August. He was, after all, supposed to have £12 million to spend upon taking the job, plus whatever money is raised through sales, currently £16 million. .
. .When Mascherano, who arrived in Barcelona on Saturday for his medical, signs for the Spanish champions, the total sum supposedly available to Hodgson should stand at £50 million. Yet the captures of Meireles and Konchesky take the club's outlay this summer to £24.2 million. As always at Liverpool, something does not add up.
Since Benítez decided to sell Robbie Keane back to Tottenham for £16 million in January 2009, Liverpool have recouped some £80 million in sales.
Mascherano's departure will take that figure to £102 million. The Spaniard and Hodgson between them have spent just £59.8 million, when Meireles and Konchesky are factored in, in the last 18 months. .
. . At a club where both Tom Hicks, the co-owner, and Christian Purslow, the managing director, have asserted that the "player fund" is sacrosanct, in theory Hodgson should have £40 million burning a hole in his pocket. It is safe to assume he does not. . .""

. . .So can you all see what sort of conditions Uncle Roy is working under?. .Please comment on this Ed (and everyone else). .Personally this breaks my heart! . . . Now lets smash West Brom! !

SI

YNWA

{Editor's Note: I think it is poor journalism based upon conjecture – witness the “supposed to have” statement and takes no account of wages or, as Sharkey has reminded us repeatedly, the £10M payment that had to be made for Aquilani and Johnson. What strikes me as a shame is that the owners (presumably) have sanctioned the spending that has happened in the past few days and the fans are still not happy.}

29 Aug 2010 13:51:11

From what I've been told Liverpool have enquired about 3 players in the last three days, one is more than likely Konchesky and another is thought to be (by my sources who email me regularly) a striker.

in MY opinion we should sign Van Wolfswinkel, the guy scored a hat-trick against Celtic, Liverpool shirt sales would sky-rocket (even though they're already the best-selling shirts in the world) and it would make our tricky trip to Utrecht for the Europa League a lot easier.
I don't know about a holding midfielder, but the Man Ure fans on the Man Utd site are worrying themselves silly just at the thought of us signing Steven Defour, so it'd be a laugh if we sign him.

29 Aug 2010 13:45:00

Any one totaly fed up with barca and real just taking any player they want, now they are already niggling at torres for NEXT season,
something has got to be done about all this tapping up, also chelsea were at it again this summer over torres, what happened to the suspended transfer ban they had? the new english player rules show that things can be changed why the f.a don't outlaw agents and act for the players themselves is a joke at least all the money (allegedly) will stay in the game and not into a parasites pocket, and stop the agents (parasites) manufacturing moves at the first hint of a player sulking, for his percentage of course, the bosman rule was brought in why not go to court and get these dogs banned and the real football people deal with the clubs keep it in house and more transparent (bung free) we will all know were the money is going and how much, also the f.a can be held responsible for deals and not disappear, its time the men in suits started earning the money they receive
paisleys skids

{Editor's Note: There is no evidence that Chelsea tapped up Torres and the ban they had was dropped on appeal. The Spanish clubs seem to be a law unto themselves and I agree something should be done.}

Regarding the takeover, do we really need to have it done and dusted before the window shuts?
RH seems to have enough funds at present to strengthen the team in the short term.
If someone comes in and gives the manager 100 million to spend we then just buy players for the sake of it without thinking about the team. . .much like what City have done.
I still believe that we have the basis of a top class team and with the signings that RH has made, we are moving in the right direction.

29 Aug 2010 12:27:58
Ed, with the porto lad arriving, will LUCAS be leaving?i really hope so?

{Editor's Note: I doubt it.}

AC Milan have agreed to take Ibrahimovic (imastinkybitch) on a season long loan, why couldnt liverpool have done that?? obviously RH is trying to find the perfect player for when he buy's players.

Ed i have a doubt with the cup tied and arda turan. at the uefa web the rule of the cup tied said that if a team is eliminated their players can play with another team the same competition so galatasaray (the arda turan club) had been eliminated of the europa league. THAT THIS MEAN THAT ARDA TURAN CAN PLAY WITH US IN EUROPA LEAGUE IF WE SIGN HIM?

Spanish LFC Fan

29 Aug 2010 11:30:10

ED - why are you so sure that we don't need another striker??

I Think we defo need a second striker in the mould of a Defoe style player to create the space for Nando and have a GOAL SCROING PARTNERSHIP!

Not just have Ngog as "backup" he is no way good enough. .

What would be peoples thoughts on AGBONLAHOR? ?

Young, english, pace to burn and proven in prem. I would say 14m on him better money than Tovoinen etc. .

BELIEVABLE if you think he would be a good striker for LFC.

NIVEK HOLLOWAY YNWA * * * {editor's note - I have said I think we need to buy a player good enough to push Torres for a first team place and can play alongside him if we play two up front. But I don't think it is urgent, too many changes will make it difficult for us to get going this season. I think we should wait until January, look at the youngsters we have and then see exactly what is our main priority then. Until then we can use Cole behind Torres, with Kuyt, Jovanovic, Gerrard, Pacheco, Amoo, Ngoo and Dalle Valle as options for all the forward and wide positions. Hopefully one of the youngsters will show themselves to be good enough and save us some money.}

29 Aug 2010 11:26:24
Hi why not we offer Lucas nd maybe 2 mill on top for Scott parker nd with money we have buy winger such as arda turan nd we will sort our problem of wingers nd kuyt nd babel nd jovanovic can be used as 2nd strikers nd I think jovanvic will be more suited to 2nd striker/ forward to torres.

Dont know why people are being downbeat about the paul konchesky signing. he's a natural left back and on his day can defend better than fab and insua. proven in the prem and home grown. for £4m he's a good buy. everyone was hoping for salcido but its gonna take time for him to adapt to the prem and hodgson's managerial style. pk knows the prem AND hodgson's managerial style.

based on the signing of RM, were hardly being asset stripped are we. rafa did more asset stripping; dossena and vorinin anyone?

To the guy that wrote:

Liverpool Rumours
Guys, heard from a mate in Liverpool that Hodgson wants to play Lucas further forward in the future, so don't rule out Diarra signing (probably on loan initially) as he may be one for the future.

Reaction to the squad depth guy, no it is not good enough yet but you can't deny that Hodgson has improved it so far, and we are getting closer to two top players in every position next season:

Reina - Jones

Johnson - Kelly (future)
Carragher (not for long) - Skrtel
Agger - Wilson (future)
Konchesky - Insua (will do for now but need another)

Meireles - Lucas
Gerrard - Aquilani

Kuyt - Maxi
Cole - Pacheco
Jovanovic - Babel

Torres - N'Gog (will do for now but need another)

And that's not mentioning Gulasci, Kyrgiakos, Aurelio, Poulsen, Spearing, Amoo, Eccleston and the other youth players. So yes, needs improving of course but will do for the time being.

. . .You spent all that time inventing possible future signings without taking any notice of our current squad of players. . . .Aqualani went out on loan to Juventus for a start

I've got a rumour, everybody is fed up of Barca players mouthing off about players from other clubs. Xavi is one of the classiest footballers, but the mouthiest twonk - is BarcaTV just a channel designed to unsettle other teams' players? In terms of arrogance they are starting to rival Madrid.

Ref: Transfer targets and Sales.
I've been a Liverpool fan for 33 years now and one thing i've always noticed with the way we do business in the Transfer Market compared to any other team - We virtually always pay overinflated prices for players ( so do other teams i hear you say.) But unlike other teams, we never sell for a decent price! We sell for the GOING price!
Now other teams don't go in for this GOING price theory. They go for the "if you want him, you'll pay OUR price theory."
Example - '26 yr old defensive midfielder, probably one of the best, if not the best in the Premiership, Argentina Captain (not Cyprus or N. Ireland Capt.) We got £18m - £22m for him. Now i think its not a bad price, but what would Utd, Arse, Chelski or any other team got for him considering his suitors were Barca and Inter not Birmingham and Sunderland? Whatever Their price was that's what, or they wouldn't have sold him.
Its not just Masch, we buy overinflated players, we sell players for a reasonable price and then the player will play for that team for a few seasons, turn out good again and they'll sell him to another team or back to US for an overinflated price.
You watch it happen with our youth players. They won't get a chance in our first team, we'll sell them for £2.50p and they'll get a run in the first team somewhere else and some other team or US will say "hey they're fantastic, i'll give you £20m for him.
So basically expect to pay well over the odds for any player and before the window shuts and give them away next year for £1 and a bag of sweets!

I don't believe that we need anymore strikers at the club. We got Nando, Babel, N'Gog, Jovanovic, Kuyt n even Pacheco if we need him.
Looks like Hodgson wants to play Babel upfront as well as that's the position he has been playing this season and that's the posistion he made a name for himself at Ajax in
What u thinh Ed? {editor's note - I feel the same, until January, then we can reassess the situation.}

Miereles looks like another good signing by Roy and its great to see business being done on the quiet as was the way during the good old days, fingers crossed he pulls a first class striker out of the hat before tuesday eve.Need a convincing win today looking forward to seeing us play some great football and no zonal defence at corners!

Guys, believe it or not, i've got a very reliable source telling me that the prodigal son (Michael Owen) is coming home. bet you didn't see that coming!

I would not have that back . even if he offered to play for nothing and washed the showers out on a muddy day.

29 Aug 2010 09:45:40
Ed can I just say your doing a great job, however which ed it is I have a few quibbles.

We clearly need a back striker or a winger. Yet you constantly refer to the fact we have Jovanovic as a winger or striker. First of all he isn't the answer I've seen him play many a times and he is merely a slightly faster Kuyt who doesn't work quite as hard. Cole wants to be played in the hole so I don't see how switching him to the flanks on occasion will benefit us. Babel pure and simple isn't good enough, maybe as a sub striker but certainly not as a winger. I'm only pointing this out because you keep making back up suggestions to our long term winger(s) and striker problems, if we don't have them play someone out of position there.

Expect two more signings.
A money signing and a loan signing. {editor's note - it wasn't me saying that, but I would look to use Pacheco out wide instead of Jovanovic or Kuyt myself. We have Amoo, who deserves a chance, as well. I just don't see the need to buy 40 players in this transfer window, it does nothing but cause the kind of awkward play we saw against City and we have seen at the start of every season under Rafa. Signings should be limited, the team needs to evolve not be dissolved and start again each transfer window.}

Right this is strange i have done a bit of research

As the transfer window draws to a close, is the inquiry as to why Hodgson's revolution did not begin to take shape until the final weekend of August. He was, after all, supposed to have £12 million to spend upon taking the job, plus whatever money is raised through sales, currently £16 million.

When Mascherano, who arrived in Barcelona on Saturday for his medical, signs for the Spanish champions, the total sum supposedly available to Hodgson should stand at £50 million.

At a club where both Tom Hicks, the co-owner, and Christian Purslow, the managing director, have asserted that the "player fund" is sacrosanct, in theory Hodgson should have £40 million burning a hole in his pocket. It is safe to assume he does not.

What do you think Ed?, i think it is ludicrous

{Editor's Note: This is the kid in the sweetshop approach you are advocating. Clubs don't spend money unless they need to. The club is up for sale and the owners have already made available funds which many thought would be used for other purposes. You are also assuming £16M available as a starting point - and forgetting that the funds have to cover additional wages. Also, it has never been clear where the funding was to come from to pay installments on Johnson and Aquilani - about £10M.}

* * *

Why do you think Benitez was kicked out? he was too powerful - and most likely this is was Torres meant by broken promises regarding signings.

The club have made a lot of money from Benitez signings. You are absolutely right - by my count there should be a big chunk of money waiting to be spent on players, we desperately need a second striker but I won't hold my breath - If we want to get back into the champions league we need PROVEN quality - now wet dreams like Wolfwinkle or Toivenen - we need proven players - that's exactly what spurs have done. I think the only decent signing we have made this summer is joe cole - fantastic - Poulson and the new portuguese player are still complete unknowns in the premier league. If we can get them and there is money, surely we should get Bent/ Agbonlahor/ Fabiano/ Aguero - proven talent - We are Liverpool, lets think bigger than the dross that's been mentioned here lately.

Gazman

29 Aug 2010 09:15:54
I don't see any need for a striker, but if I had to chose one to improve the squad Asamoah Gyan may be a useful addition -

Ed, you are off your rocker! Of course we need a striker! !
Do you think ngog is good enough cover for Torres? or Babel?
When Torres was out last season we lookes woeful. We need a proven quality striker - and I mean proven in the premier league. I would go for agbonlahor - I now he only scores 13-14 goals a season but he could get more with gerrard and cole around him IMO - not sure we can afford it though, (who knows what weve got? i'm not sure liverpool know?)

Maybe Bent would be the perfect choice as he scores goals.

Why Gyan? his scoring record is woeful? When Torres is out we need a goal scorer mate.

gazman {editor's note - that was a different editor to me who said that, but I would look to give more youngsters an opportunity myself. With Jovanovic, Pacheco, Babel, Dalle Valle and Ngoo, I don't feel we need to buy, unless the striker is good enough to challenge Torres for a first team place and be able to play alongside him. I would rather have Darren Bent or Toivonen than Gyan myself, I don't see Gyan being any kind of partner for Torres. As for Agbonlahor, he is not fit to play in the Prem, let alone wear the red shirt. He is just like Baros, head down run at the goal, with no clue about anything happening around him. Except that Agbonlahor is quicker but he is so rubbish his own fans boo him regularly!}

29 Aug 2010 08:32:37

ONCE AGAIN we are going to miss out on a good striker with Hodgson going for cole again instead of toivonen It is because we can not afford the 13 million tag on the striker, it is only a week ago that he would have cost us 9 million now PSV know we have sold masch they have put their price up Pool always have bad luck in the transfer market

Yeah we have always been unlucky in the transfer market, That Torres wasn't a very good player was he. . .

Ed?, even if we do sign Aguero would he not be cup tied cause he played in the super cup {editor's note - the Super Cup doesn't have any effect on player's eligibility, it is just a European Charity Shield match.}

29 Aug 2010 08:26:56
What do you think ed

looking at transfers this summer still added up that we have about 15 million to spend on transfer dealings + any money if we got some in first place from board.

looking at how hodgson works i think he is happy to use babel , kuyt, pacheco and jovanavic as back up to torres and can see him moveing for connor wickham at ipswich roy wants him wickham is a self confessed liverpool fan and ipswich seem to be getting ready to sell as they have brought replacements 8 million should get him.

steven taylor for 3.5 million is a strong rumour with possibly kyriagos being sold to make way

raphael van der vaart on loan with a view to sign next year will be a great bit of buissness and must be followed up.

and ashley young could be are big buy on deadline day alltho with only 7 million in kitty the board will have to dip in there pockets

any views ed {editor's note - I don't believe Roy was given anything to spend by the board, he has had to sell to raise the funds to spend. With that in mind, I think you may be getting a bit carried away! Young and Taylor are not good enough for Liverpool, Taylor was the weakest link in an awful defence and Young goes missing for 89min of every match.}

With the players we have in the squad, taking into consideration good form we should have enough to compete for the top 4 place, problem we have is that, we don't have the squad to play 1 formation and dominate teams out of 3 points. look at utd, arsenal, chelsea, over the title winning teams, they could all play the way the wanted in their formation and dominate games because of the the players in those formations knew the setup was design to suit them, in europe its a little different, hence rafa did well as he was a good tactition and most european teams are very tactical. where as in the prem you have to force wins and dominate games to win the title. maybe Roy should play our players to their strengths and we may get into top 4.All said and done gerrard just behind torres is our strongest form of offence, maybe with cole and meireles we don't have to look as flat as we did angainst city when yes we masch did us over, but we were crap and bland. perhaps try a different formation. maybe a style of 3-4-2-1.

I notice you don't include Pacheco as one of your forward players, do you not think he deserves a chance?}

29 Aug 2010 04:13:30
I know Joe cole would prefer an attaking CM role but why not give Jovanovic a chance up front and play Cole left wing. He is a proven threat there until we aquire the funds to buy quality wingers. Also, good riddance to Macherano and any other player from any club that refuses to play. Who do they think they are. . almost 100k or whatever a week and trying to pretend they are in charge. Something has to change and soon!

To those of you talking about players being cup tied, I'll say it again. Players who play in the Europa League qualifiers are not cup tied until their team advances to the GROUP STAGE. YES. THE GROUP STAGE.

Which means none of the following supposed "targets" are CUP TIED.

Arda Turan- Galatasaray
Ashley Young- Aston Villa

Although I sincerely doubt either are legitimate targets. And personally , I feel as if our squad as it is currently can win the Europa League. IF we were to get in either of those players, then hallelujah, pace on the wings who can play in Europe, but I'd buy players like them FOR THE LEAGUE.

PS. They're not cup tied. Thanks.

Brilliant for the club, no longer do we have a manager who does his signings by committee meeting, but one who makes his decision and that is it.}

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles - but how much do you know about our newest recruit?

Raul Jose Trindade Meireles was born in Porto on March 17, 1983. He shares his birthday with American actor Rob Lowe and women's football superstar Mia Hamm.
Meireles was one of Portugal's star performers in their four matches at the 2010 World Cup finals. He played 329 minutes in total out in South Africa and covered a distance of 41.49km, reaching a top speed of 25.99 km/ h.
As well as playing in all four matches at the tournament, he started each and every one of their 12 games in qualifying and scored a crucial goal in the play-off tie with Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Meireles won his first international cap in November 2006 against Kazakhstan, while his first goal for his nation came in a Euro 2008 clash with Turkey.
He's renowned for his love of tattoos. He had his first one done at the age of 19 and has since regularly added new ones all over his body.
Meireles already has experience of playing at Anfield - he was a 65th-minute substitute for Porto in an emphatic 4-1 win for Liverpool in a Champions League group stage clash in November 2007.
He's also competed against Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea in the tournament - scoring a volley against the latter in 2007.
He's no stranger to silverware having helped Porto to four consecutive league titles between 2005 and 2009, as well as three Portuguese Cups and three Super Cups.
Meireles also starred in Portugal's success in the European U16 Championships at the turn of the century.
After moving to Porto from Boavista in 2004, he was initially deployed at left-back before commanding a more familiar central midfield role.

Well You didn't copy and paste this of liverpools website do you :/

Hi ed, great job as usual, just want to throw my spanner in the works about jefferson farfan, and please do not think i have done this to prove you wrong, but he is still playing, last match for schalke 04 was the 2-1 defeat to hannover 96 yesterday, i was just seeing what weight there is behind the rumour that he may be coming to us, as he is such a fantastic player! so to add more fuel to the fire about this one, schalke have just signed romanian international wideman ciprian deac, and could this mean that mr farfan is now surplus to requirements at schalke, maybe another hush hush to surprise us all, now my brain overload has gone , nice to read possitive thoughts on here again.
