I've been looking through the reported targets for January with their valuations and have listed what I think are the most likely players we will go for.

R. Bertrand. 7 million.
J. Pastore. 17 million.
M. Montoya. 6 million.
E. Banega. 8 million.
Jorginho. 8 million.
L. Costagnious. 6 million.
K. De Bruyen. 6 million.
A. Yarmalenko. 25 million.

We definitely couldn't afford all these players, and some no doubt will knock us back, but I can see a few signing at least. With potential sales also i.e Coates and possibly Skrtle/Johnson we could afford further targets.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Surely no way Chelsea ask for only £6m for KDB

Agree0 Disagree0

U think they fsg will fork out 25m for yarma? not a chance

Agree0 Disagree0

Bertrand and Pastore are the only realistic valuations and personally given his form think Pastore is somebody we should avoid. Bertrand would be interesting though.

Montoya surely higher than 6mil given the amount of teams interested (I know final year of contract but still he is quality and wanted)
Banega for 8mil? Don't be daft.
Jorginho might go for 8mil but wouldn't improve our starting eleven at all, pointless.
Castaignos pointless.
KDB if Chelsea would let him go to us for 6mil we should bite their hand off.
Yarmalenko 25mil is probably higher than he'll go for but still is over the odds for a wide man who isn't very quick.

Bertrand and Montoya would be excellent additions at a reasonable price. If money was available after them then a centre midfielder would be ideal (but not Banega as I doubt he'd settle in the premier league very well).

Agree0 Disagree0

Liverpool will splash the cash in January, when the big-spenders are not very active. FSG know they can't compete with the financial power of other teams in the summer.I would like to single out Javier Pastore. He looked as good as Messi and Aguero when he was at Palermo, but when he went to PSG, he looked as bad as Aquilani.

Agree0 Disagree0

Nope in his first season at PSG he scored 13, assisted 6 in 33 league matches and 16 goals and 8 assets in 43 games all together.

Now he is out of the team because they got Cavani and also Lucas.

Agree0 Disagree0

@redsurfer. FSG have no problem forking out money, they are just cautious now and understandably so seeing as KD spent 60m of their pocket on very average players. Since day one they outlined that they want to buy younger players with potential so that they can be developed into greats creating a winning team, which is why Tom Werner was so excited to sign Borini. If Ian Ayre said the word, FSG would give us 42m to sign Luke Shaw and Will Hughes for example. This is also why we are linked to players like Bertrand, Montoya, Iturbe, that is the journos using variables such as BR's words of our weak areas along with this philosophy to speculate names of players who fit this bill. We need to not get excited by paper talk at all because they really don't know what's going on. However we can rest assured that we will sign players in January and our squad will improve.

Ed001, how highly do you rate Rossiter? What type of midfielder is he? Allen type? J. McCarthy type? Havent seen much of him and I know he is young, but seen some impressive stuff from him tonight. Do you think he lacks pace for that holding role?

Cheers, your work is appreciated

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I think Rossiter is the best prospect at the club, he is an old fashioned central midfielder though. Not the McCarthy, run around a lot but achieve nothing fooling the cameras into making you look good because they always catch you throwing yourself in when you could have just got into position and cut out the pass type at all. Nor the Allen type of short passing, looking for quick one twos but not actually having any team mates on the same wavelength type either. Nor even, despite the comparisons being made, the Gerrard all out charging around looking for the break on the edge of the box player. More the old fashioned cover the defence and support the attack midfielder that we used to see.}

Thanks for the reply, Is he the kind of player you would play next to say Medel if he hypothetically was to join, or Lucas if you like? Is he training with the seniors on a regular basis?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - if he reaches the level he should, it would be who would partner him, rather than who he would partner, if you see what I mean. He has the ability to play well alongside whoever, filling in the weaknesses in their game. When he has played alongside a midfielder who likes to get forward, he has been excellent at filling in and covering. When I have seen him alongside a more defensive player, he has shown the ability to get forward and create an attacking threat. The lad is a special talent, the best of the homegrown players by far.
If I remember correctly, he spends a day training with the first team each week, fixtures permitting.}

Thats great to hear, let's just hope the coaches rate him as highly as you do. I know you speak highly of Mclaughlin as well, I remember him impressed going forward v Roma some time ago but was not as convincing defending, is he good enough for a starting birth as of now?(Obviously not now when out injured)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - the only way we will find out if he is good enough is to give him a chance, but he certainly looks good enough.}

True, thanks again!
Good night

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed do you think rossiter could have a chance in the side anytime soon?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - depends on cup draws I think, that will be his chance. Unless we get a few injuries piling up and Rodgers' hand is forced. I was wondering why Baio has not had a chance yet either. I know he is young, but physically he is certainly strong and powerful, with pace too. He seems the type of midfielder we are missing, and no worse on the ball than the Diames etc we are linked with.}

Ed I loved biao when I first saw him & described him in a positive way to frimpong of arsenal who's vanished just wondering why biao never gets any minutes for any of the sides? I'm guessing he'll be released when his contract is up but I thought the same he is the sort of player many fans have been calling for

Agree0 Disagree0

I think Mclaughlin has the potential to be really special, hope he can keep progressing and make it to the first team.

Just curious if the ed's (or fellow posters) know why Kelly isn't getting more game time. Is he not match fit or are there still concerns over his previous injury? Given its severity that would hardly be a surprise. I guess what I'm asking is when could we expect Kelly to be starting games for us again? Given Johnson's woeful form he should surely be given the chance as soon as he is physically ready right?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I was told he would be limited this season to allow him to feel his way back into playing regularly. I do think someone needs to replace Johnson though, he has looked completely lost. Though, to be fair to him, Skrtel drops so deep all the time there is acres of space usually on his side for him to cover. While Skittles stays in the team, we will always be suspect unless we are set on just dropping deep and defending for 90 minutes.}

Id describe him as more Alonso than any of the names mentioned.

Agree0 Disagree0

Skrtel worries me as a defender - he is full blooded in the tackle and tries hard but positionally is so bad it's scary. I've said a few times he shouldn't be starting but Rodgers seems keen. I don't know what he has against playing Sakho and Agger together, I think they'd compliment each other and with Aggers organisational skills we'd probably see the best of Sakho. Can't be worse than Skrtel surely?

Interesting that the club are so wary about Kelly and that injury - clearly they feel he is going to be a big part of the club for years to come to be so cautious. Glad were looking after our young(er) players, hopefully we'll see the best of Kelly next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Kelly was Brilliant when playing under Dalglish, clearly able to make the grade. He's our and Englands future rightback. We gave him a new 4 years deal last year to keep him on even though he was still several months away from coming back. We have shown a LOT of faith in him

So far been impressed with Brad Smith, Texeira and Ward.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

02 Dec 2013 20:01:29
People saying Sturridge is always injured when he was ever present since august. Allen needs to replace Gerrard because Gerrard is too worn out. and the most laughable is to drop glen johnson. He can't be dropped as flanno is bound to go out of form soon ( I hope i'm wrong) and toure cannot play rb anymore as we saw against arsenal. imo henderson should be in gerrards holding role and give gerrard a bit of attack time

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - what is wrong with Kelly or McLaughlin at right back?}

@ed001,
mclaughlin has done his hamstring mate, don't know how long he's out. They were talking about him on u21 match earlier.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I wasn't meaning the next match, it was a general point that we do have more options than the poster mentioned.}

02 Dec 2013 21:30:13
You are kidding! God damn, will McLaughlin ever get a chance? If Rodgers let's him fade into another Robinson I'll be so ticked off. Best young right back in Britain by far.

YNWAdam

Agree0 Disagree0

I forgot about Kelly in fairness but I see him fitting in more in cb. Eds do u think mclaughlin will get his chance soon?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - long term I think Kelly will end up at centre back too, he may lack a bit of strength, but so did Hansen and he was alright! I really don't expect to see McLaughlin play in the first team this season, unless he gets a run out in the cup and plays a blinder. I hope to be proven wrong though, as I really rate the lad, but he needs first team football to develop.}

@ op

Johnson has been awful. No desire, poor concentration, poor decision making, it's as if his mind is focused on anything but the football match he is a part of. Currently I don't mind us using any of our youngsters - they'll at least have the desire and focus even if they are lacking in experience, I'm sick of watching Johnson give the ball away, someone else needs an opportunity - if nothing else it might give Johnson a kick up the back side.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post seano. I think the reason Johnson isn't being dropped is because of his experience, even if he has been in poor form we don't have another player to send in who has his experience, only Kelly is the talented one but as mentioned before he is going to be eased back in because another injury would be devastating to him. Also noteworthy is BR's desire to play attacking football where Johnson is actually good. I wouldn't be shocked to see Johnson getting subbed off on Wednesday because we'll either build up a comfortable position, or Nathan Redmond will be giving him a nightmare. But as you said he needs a kick in the back side his lack of competition must be a reason for his low work rate.

Hey Eds and Reds,

going to my first ever LFC game Wednesday night vs Norwich, got seats in the Kop End, just wondering about everyones recommendations for parking and stuff. Advice would be much appreciated.

Can't wait at all! Come on Liverpool!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Were u comin from? Your best Parkin outside the area and walkin in, maybe parking in newsham park, or lower breck road. Easy to get out after match

Agree0 Disagree0

Im going to my first ever home game on the 4th too! sitting in annie road lower though bit of a disappointment not too fussed though

Agree0 Disagree0

I travel 100+ miles and just stick on any road I can find! Had a nice walk through Stanley park last time

Agree0 Disagree0

There are a couple of car parks by Everton's ground. Just walk through Stanley Park. Hope the boys do you proud.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm in the lower Anfield road end too ruthless, never been in that stand before row 3 though I think i'm a bit low to get a decent view of the other side of the pitch.

With regards to parking I usually park at Goodison and walk through Stanley park, it costs a tenner but the car park has a fence all around it and there is somebody on the gate to watch the cars so I don't mind paying it.

Ok guys, so how good is texiera playing?
21y/o should be looking at 1st team game time imo

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I don't know, but when I see Sterling and Moses playing like they did on Saturday I feel disappointed that Suso is not in an LFC shirt this season .

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd rather Rodgers and his BS goes than Sturridge!

Alreet fellas,
Just watched u21 vs villa we played some really good stuff but before kick off commentator mentioned that THIAGO ILORI, JORDAN IBE, RYAN McLaughlin will not be playing because there with the first team.

Hope to see them Wednesday massive improvement on likes of moses and sterling both looked disinterested yesterday not acceptable for a club like Liverpool.

ACHILLES.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - to be fair, Sterling, though he didn't have an effective game going forward, worked hard defensively, always looking around to see where his man was when they had the ball. He positioned himself well, tried to get his foot in and break up attacks. I could see major signs of improvement in his game when the opposition has the ball, which has obviously been the main focus of his training recently. The only problem is that his talent seems to have been stifled a bit, I think he just needs more regular first team football to get a balance in his play.}

Most seem to be blaming the 2 wingers but suarez was kept very quite as well. Kind of reminded me of Stoke of Pulis era

Agree0 Disagree0

I reckon Sterling needs a loan so he is playing regularly and able to find a balance to his game. With Sturridge injured he may get more game time but by the time the end of January rolls round would we be better off loaning him out for the remainder of the season?

p.s. I was seething with Sterling on Sunday but Editor has made a very good point and one I didn't really notice too much until reading what he said: Sterling was much better defensively but in particular the tactical understanding of his role within the team. That's a big positive because it was arguably one of his biggest weaknesses when he first broke into the side. If he can just find that attacking edge and ability to take his man again he could be very useful. Be interesting to see his development come the end of the season.

Hey fellow reds . Just a pub rumour, and not a bluenose one! If anything just something to make ya laugh after the weekend!
Apparently sturridge gone in January, Rodgers has fell out with him over the England scenario, England more important than Liverpool, . Anyway, before yas all go nuts, just a random rumour,

When someone says. I prefer National team more than Club, the same club who made him the star what he is from warming the bench at Chelsea. that's the biggest disappointment of the season.
As the eds always says. players are transient, they come and go. daniel Sturridge isn't any exception.

Hi Ed001 and fellow reds, I would just like to ask your views on Luis Alberto. I think he has the potential to be a great player. Thought he looked pretty good against Hull. Think he may be getting more chances?

YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I hope he will, certainly he deserves to play rather than Moses, who has shown nothing other than a complete lack of any kind of work ethic.}

02 Dec 2013 19:54:31
Spot on Ed. he looked great against Newcastle. calm and composed. But since then he didn't even touched the ball. what's the use of playing a loanee when he would be recalled back by his parent club?

Agree0 Disagree0

Eds do you think we might cancel Moses' loan deal?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I am not sure if we can.}

Spot on, he will be a great player for us we should be playing him now in midfield lucas alberto and henderson with cotinho, aspas and suarez upfront, aspas as No 9 with coutinho and suarez off him, and play aspas for the full 90 minutes, strikers thrive on confidence and I don't think he's finished a game yet, Rodgers paid 9 million for him why won't he play him? I'll get pelters for not including Gerrard but you know what - if all he's giving us is dead balls coutinho and suarez can do that job no problem, sorry but I've said it before he's got to be impact sub now

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I have been saying for years that 100% of Gerrard for a limited time would be better than the shadow of him we get for 90min. The older he gets, the more I believe that. Gerrard is at his best when he is charging around, hell for leather, creating, tackling, bursting into the box, pinging balls about and looking to hit a screamer. I know he can do the more defensive role, it is well within his capabilities, but it doesn't suit him as a person. He needs to be the centre of everything.}

So right Ed, love him to bits but we can't go on playing him because he's who he is, we all age (believe me I know all about that) I'm with you all the way rather have him giving everything for 20/30 minutes than sitting back wasting his vast talent.

Agree0 Disagree0

When will Rodgers have the balls to drop/rest Gerrard and bring him on in the embers of the game?! Very correct ed.

Agree0 Disagree0

I know exactly what you mean by that Ed001(on Gerrard), Remember when he came on at half time against Napoli? Monster player for 30 mins or so but I don't think he could do it for more than that any more.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm sorry what.what are you all talking about. Gerrard is still a starter for Liverpool, not a substitue. You start him, then take him off. Not the other way round, you want him to effect the early game, and take the lead, not try and help us into the game if we're behind.

The only sad thing about our lose is that it was at the hands of Hull. Don't get me wrong each time we play I pray we play at our best and win convincingly but it is reality that we will lose games but i'd prefer to lose to a top team and not bottom table dweller. LFC over these past years have suffered because we lack goal scoring from two positions Mid and Def. Chelsea have won games via Def or Mid and we need a more attacking mind set to do so. BR takes the blame but come on the players need to show them selves approved and start acting like they deserve a top four spot and not just try to inch fourth place. I must say BR has his work cut out for him because he is trying to play a style of football that the players can't manage since you need players who are all comfortable with the ball at their feet and have enough skill and confidence to get out of tight situations if required. I am not saying my view is perfect but when it comes down to it playing tiki-taka with players like Gerrard who's not as agile and energetic anymore or Hendo who has tons of energy with little skill just won't add up I tell you plus some of the players to be honest don't pass the football accurately enough or take risks. I love LFC but i'm worried not because we loss this game but i'm worried we will get somewhat lose their way trying to fit square pegs into round holes.
Just keep fighting though cause it don't matter hw you get fourth spot or higher it just matters that you do. Last thing I pray in Jan we spend big and get the right players at the right time cause we seem to get players when their best form has long passed i.e(Downing, Adam, Moses, etc. ) YNWA.

Hull was a massive setback but it won't matter in the end, what will matter is our next six games where we travel to spurs, chelsea, and city. We also have 3 homes games against bottom table clubs. These games come in a fairly quick succession so after this period we will have a great deal of knowledge of how good our squad is and the table will be taking shape giving us a better idea of where every team will be towards the end of the season. I predict that we will be fighting with Man U and Southampton for 4th and so far the table shows we have been better than them. Their squads are just as weak as ours, United may have the numbers, but their extra players are really poor. The fear factor is non existence at Old Trafford so lots of teams will be nicking points there. The same goes for spurs, their squad clearly isn't clicking and they have no confidence at the moment.

Vs Norwich I hope that we see Aspas and Ibe given a chance. Sterling and Moses were useless and Alberto almost gave away a goal. I think Ibe has way more potential than Sterling because he actually has the physique that Sterling never will (Plus he was spotted by one of Comolli's scouts, the same one who suggests bale, not that meaningful just food for thought). I also wish to raise a point about Moses. Yesterday he shows that he is only hear to show his skills so chelsea don't axe him in the summer. He made a terrible individual error which cost us the opening goal, someone below said he is a waste of wage and I have to agree, he needs to perform better because he could be a useful player in our top 4 bid. Personally I think this is our last chance to get back to top 4 because if we don't, Suarez will certainly leave for a CL team that he deserves, and once that happens we can't expect the same kind of thing to happen as in bringing a world class forward straight in. I also feel that FSG would sack BR this year if we don't achieve top 4 and then it would be yet another rebuilding process. As an optimist I have full faith that we will get top 4. I think after these six games we will be still in 4th place and after that we have a pleasant fixture list of home games and lower team away fixtures. During this we will be adding to the team so I truly feel we will be in a nice position by the time we go to Man U in mid-march. So I hope to hear back from fans how they expect the next 6 games to go and I hope this post has made a few people think more positively about our current situation.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I was hoping that Hull result was a lesson for these types of posts:

If we get 37.4 points from our next 11.6 games we'll be blah blah blah.

It is pure folly to look more than 1 game at a time. It leads to nihilistic reactions when we lose a game. Suspensions, injuries loss of form are completely unpredictable. Just focus on the next game.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Dec 2013 16:32:46
Not in reaction to the hull result, more just general observation of the year so far in relation to the "top" teams management changes and the effects. There was a lot of movement in the last year or so, my question is IF the decision could be revisited when as I recall Martinez was interviewed, would people of preferred him over rodgers?

Desperately hoping to be wrong here but my opinion is that we are in a false position at the moment, when the fixtures start asking more questions.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Martinez has started off well, but just like BR, let's wait and see how he does the rest of the season and next season before judging him. I am so far content with BR, but he needs to learn fast.

Agree0 Disagree0

Im more than happy with rodgers and the progression under him. what I can't understand is the constant changes he makes to the starting eleven. I understand injuries have played a part and if he's true to his word in respect of playing players that are playing and training well then that's also fair. I think the main problem we have is that our fringe players haven't stepped up or possibly aren't good enough. and thatleads to questions as why they were bought. allen, alberto, cissoko, moses, borini, lori and aspas seem to be good additions but are they good enough for top top four? i'm just surprised none of the previously mentioned players have impressed. fingers crossed they'll only get better!

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Dec 2013 19:10:17
Martinez have made some good business compared to BR and KK. Barry on loan. Mcarthy for 10 mill and a Beast Lukaku on loan.
Lukaku is Chelsea best striker for years to come and Everton would utilize the best from him.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - McCarthy for 10m? He cost them £13.5m initial payment, with more to come based on appearances and others possible payments based on winning things. Also he has not played that well for them, certainly not the player I had thought he would develop into when I saw him play for Hamilton Accies years ago as a kid. He doesn't seem to have improved, if anything he looks worse, he just runs around a lot like a headless chicken, which appeals to the clueless fans.}

02 Dec 2013 20:51:49
Ed01. Sorry Ed. compared to 100 mill spend by us. this is a very minimal amount and they share equal points with us.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - who cares how much they spent and we spent? Who cares that they share the same points with us now? It is still early in the season, let's see where it stands at the end of it and even then the comparison is irrelevant, McCarthy is still not good enough if he was £5.50. They still need to fill those gaps next season when the loans end. Whereas our signings are there again next season. So they have done good short term business but terrible long term business.}

Everton are one of the jammiest teams in terms of the loan deals they secure it is ridiculous.

Lukaku = world class centre forward who has already had a year in the premiership to get used to it, Chelsea's best forward yet Mourinho loans him out.

Barry = international level central midfielder.

Deulofeu = Spanish wonderkid who will probably be a started for Barca in a season or 2's time.

I've never seen another club be able to get this quality of loan player before, it's really weird and it is undoubtedly having a massive impact on their performance and results. They aren't going to be this fortunate every year so they really need a good season.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Dec 2013 07:55:31
Barry would end up at everton as City don't need him anymore, wages would be a stumbling block.
Lukaku is the best striker and have already falklen out with Jose. Everton would seel 29 year old baines for 30 mill to Moyes and they would somehow pull Lukaku or another top player.
Mcarthy and Barkely would sit in their midfield for sometime.
I don't think they would have a problem in selling any of their players, Moyes woudl do a good job in paying over and over and way over the odds.

Agree0 Disagree0

Seano,

You seem to be grasping at straws re. Everton.

There is a real possibility Everton will finish in the top four this season.

In that case, they have every chance of signing Lukaku permanently, extending Deulofeu's loan, and keeping Barry.

BR is supposed to be friends with
Jose. Why didn't he get Lukaku?

Here is my evaluation of our current situation here at Liverpool:

Firstly, yesterdays result highlighted how much our squad lacks depth and a threat going forward. There is nothing wrong with having two strikers scoring the majority of our goals, but when our midfielders are contributing virtually nothing to that goal tally (most of them have scored no more than 2) then alarm bells should ring even when we are winning games, as it shows that if injuries hit either of them we will have big problems! And it seems that this stands true after seeing the last two games without sturridge and countinho starting.
Our midfield is currently one of the weakest in the top half of the table in my view with 3 players (gerrard, Lucas, Hendo) who are basically holding/engine players with little goal threat, physicality, flair or creativity; without coutinho their is no link between midfield and attack and I can't believe this wasnt addressed in summer with another player of coutinhos quality, instead we felt moses was the answer (never liked him at chelsea and did alright in a average wigan side). We need to add a power house, winger with pace and flair and a slick central playmaker in order to have a midfield worthy of securing top 4. I just hope Rodgers does not waste this upcoming window like he did the last (adding 3 more central defenders when their are only 2 places available, teenagers purchased for high prices who aren't ready, useless loan players, others that have rarely played).
Rodgers really needs to address these issues because relying on three players to create and score all your goals is insane and will not achieve top four!

(Please post eds)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Given yesterdays performance my biggest gripe is regarding the team selection. why no shako. gerrard, moses, sterling and Johnson had nightmares. midfield area is a major concern for me, I think we are way short of major attacking threat. could really do with suso back as he deserves starting pace over many others. Rodgers really has to shoulder his share of he blame for yesterday.

Agree0 Disagree0

Good post, I agree.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes - the summer transfers have so far turned out to be poor business. Mignolet being the glaring exception. (We would be mid-table now without him).

We need to be clever in January, as we were a year ago, or I fear for our season.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Dec 2013 15:22:55
Without Sturridge and Coutinho in our starting 11, the only real danger man appears to be Suarez. I see a lot of questions to the eds like "what are the chances of X why and Z", however my question concerns Suso. Now that Suso is truly showing his quality in La Liga, I was curious as to what the protocol is for ending a loan move early? I know this isn't on the agenda but does it happen often (players being called back to their parent club before the loan deal expires)?

I ask because at a time where Liverpool seem to lack any serious penetration due to the nature of their midfield players, instead of shelling out 20 mill or what not on a midfielder, surely bringing Suso back is the cheaper option! Anyways, just a thought. I stick by my previous comments about Pastore and Alonso being the men to turn our midfield into a quality attacking force. For the love of God please bring in somebody to replace Glen Johnson. The man can be fantastic going forward but defensively, he is truly abysmal.

{Ed002's Note - It depends on the provisions of the individual loan contract. Suso has a loan for a season and will not be returning in January. I suspect there will be some lengthy discussions with him in the summer.}

Below is a brief analysis of each of our midfielders and then my opinion of who we can bring in to resolve our current issues.

Lucas - Very good at breaking up down opposition attacks. Deserves his place in the team.

Gerrard - Age is obviously affecting his performance and he needs to be rested more often.

Allen - Not suited to our style of play. Good passing ability but no attacking or defensive ability. A squad player at best.

Henderson - Has improved dramatically over the past couple of years. He has bags of energy and works his socks off but for me he is a squad player.

Alberto - Young prospect. One for the future. Not good enough for the first team yet.

Coutinho - As we know he has been excellent since his arrival almost a year ago. He is our only attack minded midfielder and he needs support in midfield. Rightly deserves his place in the team.

Who can we bring in to resolve our midfield problems?

Mata - Has been out favour at Chelsea for the majority of the season and is the type of player we need to improve our midfield problem. He can keep the ball, pass the ball, provide goals and has great vision to pick out the forwards. He would be expensive, but would be worth every penny.

Yohan Cabaye - Has very good defensive and attacking ability. He is confident going forward, and offers similar attributes to Gerrard in terms of passing and shooting ability. He would be excellent alongside Lucas or Gerrard in central midfield.

James Ward-Prowse - He has been excellent for Southampton and could be our long term replacement for Gerrard. Offers more attacking ability than Henderson and has very good passing ability. From what I have seen of James Ward-Prowse and Will Hughes, Ward-Prowse would be more suited to our style of play.

Let me know your thoughts.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Of the three, I would go after Cabaye, since I can't see Chelsea selling Mata, and Southampton player fits in well with Southampton.style but might not in ours. That being said, Newastle would milk us over the price, and let's be honest, Newcastle are hot right now and may very well be above us in the table very soon. Why would he leave?

Agree0 Disagree0

To be honest I think we could do with all three. That is how much improvement our midfield needs I would probably play Lucas, Cabaye, Coutinho, and Mata in midfield with Sturridge and Suarez up front. It would be good to know that we had players like Gerrard, Ward-Prowse and Henderson on the bench to influence a game coming on.

Obviously cost would be a big issue, but these 3 players would improve our midfield dramatically.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

Joe Allen not suited to our style of play? Someone doesn't understand our style of play being as though he's the only one perhaps with the exception of Alberto who's perfect for our style & coutinho of course from the midfield anyway

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think we necessarily need anyone new, we just need to deploy what we have more efficiently/effectively. The combination of Gerrard/Lucas in a holding role clearly doesn't work so we need to stop trying. Let Henderson/Allen play next to Lucas as they'll excel there and let Gerrard go do what he does best and attack. A interchangeable attacking four of say Coutinho + Suarez + Gerrard + whoever backed by the work rate of Lucas/Allen/Henderson would surely work better for everyone.

Agree0 Disagree0

Allen is suited to our style if we want to play for a draw every game. We need midfielders that can play attacking creative football. I am in no way slating Allen, but he is not strong in the tackle, he cannot advance forward with the ball and is not a goalscorer, so in what way is he suited to our style? Because he can pass? You need to have more than one attribute to play for Liverpool.

Who knows, maybe it's a confidence thing, and he will advance into a worldbeater! We will have to see if and when he gets a good run in the team.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

Chelsea will not sell Mata to us BUT even if they did consider it he is a top quality player. Clubs in better positions (in terms of European football and financial) will be after him, we have no chance - fans need to forget about him.

Cabaye is class but Newcastle would ask for a small fortune. They rejected Arsenal's advances, they'd have little bother rejecting ours.

Southampton are financially secure, doing very well and have an exciting future. They have no need to sell and I suspect their players have no desire to leave.

You've chose three players who would undoubtedly improve our team. But they are also players we stand a practically 0% chance of signing. You may as well have said Messi, Ronaldo and Schweinsteiger.

Agree0 Disagree0

Allen does suit our style of play. It's just that, so far, he has just not been very good.

But the more worrying thing is that I am not sure that "our style of play" is going to be all that effective in this league. It is simply too slow, and there is nowhere near enough goals from Allen (or other midfielders).

Scholes was probably the closest thing to a Xavi type of player in the EPL. But Scholes not only played short passes in mid-field, he also hit long passes that stretched opposition defences, and scored goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shelvey is not doing well at Swansea. Yes he has scored a few goals, but he's positionally hopeless, he loses possession all the time, he's slow and slows every attack down as he always needs 3 or 4 touches before he does anything.

BR wants to play controlled passing game, in order to play that game you need players very comfortable on the ball.
skrtl and toure are not suited to play the ball from the back into play.
hendersen is a runner not a combination midfielder and not football clever enough.
gerrard is getting older and there is no shame in that at all.
in midfield we only have coutinho who can dribble a player and open up the game.
allen and lucas are passers.
barca/bayer pass the ball all day but there wingers create the danger.
we have no wingers and I am not sure moses is better than downing.
FSG need to be very careful we are behind the other teams our ground needs to be rebuild but we need serious investment in the team sooner than later.
we are up against chelsea/manu/manc/arsenal who will outspend us and already have a better squad.
we need to get into the top 4 fast otherwise players like suarez and coutinho will leave.

Serious Investment?. You mean another 100 mill?. above 100 mill already spent?.

With serious investment I meant, 2/3 players that would walk into our team not long term investments or 27 year old players from celta the vigo.sevilla have a brilliant left defender 20 year old moreno will cost 20-25mil and but so did allen and aspas combined.the 25 mil they spend last summer was saved on previous wages.
i am lfc fan Harry been 1 for 35 years just like you are, but it will be hard in the long run to get into the top 4 with all the other teams buying starters.we have some real talent and stars but would allen/hendersen/flanagan/alberto/aspas/sterling get into our rivals squad?the gap between our arrived players and up and coming players is too big.
without buying a left back and midfielder in jan injuries and susp will cost us at the end of the season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Moses is good, BR is asking him to mix his game by playing inside, use him as a pure wide man and he will do fine, Our concern should be our CM and attacking Mids, we want to keep the ball by passing it back, Sterling is not ready for first team, personally, I do not know if he is good enough for top four team in the league, he might be good for lower level teams, BR must have a conversation with GJ and see if he wants to leave or give us his best. Hendo is giving us his best, SG also, but they are not good enough now, I think SG should except the fact that he is a HM now. Man I am still angry over the game, the effort was not there in Middle,

Agree0 Disagree0

Moses is not good, he's mediocre. He was a panic buy in deadline day.

Rodgers targeted Diego Costa and Mikhtaryan in the summer. With either of these playing yesterday it would have been a totally different story.

Have a bit of faith.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - did you see when he lost the ball after Flanno made him a nice overlap? With Flanno caught upfield and the ball taken off his toe, he just stood and watched as the attack developed on his side of the pitch, doing nothing to cover the gap! For me he should have been immediately hooked for that, it was sheer laziness and lack of team work.}

Harry Scouser
I didn't talk about Kenny's signings, mate! those were disasters too, I'm talking about how we play.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed001 I agree should have been hooked right of but do you rogers has the guts to do something like that?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I am not sure it is guts, I think he is trying to manage players into improving their performances. Showing faith in young players can pay dividends in the future. But they have to have the desire and ability to succeed that Moses has shown none of at all, for that to succeed. Plus he is only on loan, so why not show faith in our own youngster and improve them for the future instead?}

Moses clearly doesn't care how well the team does and seems to have a complete lack of respect for the Liverpool shirt. His performances have been abject, lazy, passionless and dull. He should not get another game, our youngsters will at least work hard for the shirt - that counts for much more than talent (though not sure Moses has much of that in all honesty).

Sorry fellow Reds, it's not doom and gloom but sadly I have lost a little bit of faith in Brendan.

Our wins this season have been mostly through individual brilliance of either Suarez, Sturridge or Gerrard and no so much team play. We faded in 2nd halves because Mr Rodgers is not sure what to do. Even the games we won, we ended up hanging for dear life for the 3 points. please think back.
Brendan's buying policy ; Sturridge was a known entity (wasn't as if Brendan 'found' him), Coutinho was a Rafa recommendation and the rest. others he had bought to sit on the bench. Why does he not play Aspas and Sakho while loan out Assaidi and Borini. Why buy them to loan out or sit dfthem on the bench. Ilori plays for the reserves, and Sissoko (spelling) is good but not Liverpool standard, although that is falling fast!
I was sad to see Brendan use the sturridge injury as an excuse, against Hull! They had lost 4 out of last 5 games. Come on, guys, we must stop excusing ourselves. This was a season, or so a lot of us thought, where we will make a mark, yet with results like yesterday and games coming up now. it's looking dark. other teams have injuries too but we seem to go belly up with one injury. What's happened to our great youth system, where are the hungry youngsters tearing away to play. why didn't Agger play yesterday. I am sorry guys, Brendan does not know his best 11, with or without injury. Suarez and Sturridge have carried us so far but that is coming to an end. WE DO NOT HAVE A SYSTEM OF PLAY. All teams lose to weaker opponents but they batter them before losing. We went out with a whimper, not even a whimper and if any fan tries to see a positive about yesterday's game. then please show me the sand hill you've buried your head in so I can do the same. It infuriated me to see Bruce talk about a 4th goal being the icing on the cake. Are you taking the piss? Is it surprising Suarez wants to go? Can't we really see the weaknesses in our own team?
To be totally brutal and honest some of our first team players are simply not good enough for Liverpool, whether we support them or not. If they're good enough they are good enough. We can't afford to give players 3 years to develop, are you serious?
Allen, Moses, Henderson, Sterling are good players but. I know I'm going to get slated for what I've said but that's how I see it, my friends, I wish I was wrong, maybe I am. I don't claim to know more than Brendan but we can't run hot and cold from game to game. What happened to our 'pressing game' as he calls it. With King Kenny we 'dominated' teams, Arsenal were battered at our place, they won but that was the only time Wenger admitted to have been lucky. We beat Chelsea away twice. Brendan needs to show EXPERTISE. Talk is cheap, show us you can do the business, you are the boss so the buck stops with you and on one else!
No excuses, just football, even if we lose, we want to lose playing football. Not like yesterday when we didn't even play! You can't let standards fall even lower than this.
Sorry about the rant, but things are desperate believe it or not. So much to say, Sorry friends!

Adam has gone back to his home long time back. and downing is worse than Carton cole at westham.
Luis suarez. is the only player who has hit the ground.

Sturridge won everything at chelsea and all he wanted was playing time and national side. We offerd him and he accepted. simple.
In 2 years time he would whisper about CL if we fail to reach it. Mark my words.

Countinho is a gem who is constantly palyed out of position who was brilliant last seaosn for us.

To offer a counter argument Rodgers was very keen on Mhiktaryan and for whatever reason (allegedly club didn't want to pay the money) Dortmund signed him. Wanted Diego Costa - couldn't get him for reasons unknown. The players he wants are good quality but there is a disconnect between what Rodgers wants and what we can afford/attract. We panic bought at the end because we ran out of time. We now have too many centre backs, a lack of quality midfielders and a lack of depth attacking wise. Rodgers is partially culpable but people behind the scenes need to take responsibility. Sturridge and Coutinho, whilst not unknowns, were inspiring signings for the price. Allen hasn't shone and we probably overpaid for him. The signings this summer have by and large not really featured (Illori = 0 games. Alberto = peripheral substitute appearances. Sakho = 2 games then nothing) so even making judgement on those signings is difficult. January transfers could again be crucial in improving our fortunes but i'm not sure if Rodgers can pull another couple of rabbits out of the hat this time.

I appreciate the attempt to stay positive, but this loss has been a long time coming. We have scraped points against the likes of Newcastle, United, Everton and Swansea. Dropped silly points against Southampton and been totally outclassed by Arsenals midfield. We cannot control games because the midfield is weak. Even the games we deserved to come away with points, we have been dominated for large periods. Everybody could see it coming and SAS have just been scoring enough to paper over the cracks. 15 points from our last 10 games is mid table form. Our three 1-0 wins at the start gave us a great platform to go on and build throughout the season, but performances have started yielding the results they deserve. I think its great we are 4th having played awful in 12 of our 13 games (Fulham being the exception) but We've been sliding down the table since week 4 and now Sturridge is gone, I can't see that slide stopping unless Rodgers makes changes. This was not a freak result. This has been coming. Everyone could see it. Some bleated about it in a truly negative fashion and refused to acknowledge the positives mind you. The fact the cracks have been revealed against Hull has brought on some pretty bad critiscism, but the constructive critiscism is not people moaning or being fickle, its people finally seeing/accepting what some have been saying all season. Our midfield is weak.

Yo. I do agree. If Suarez or sturridge has an off day, Then Its pretty much sure, we won't be scoring, Then the only thing left is not to conceede.
Wen we loose the ball, We fall to the shape 4-4-1-1 and Gerrard would be waliking and passing his time from one end of the pitch to the other diaginally.
Poor hendo would running from one side to the other to press. Then suarez drop down and sturridge.
Neither of Gerrard or Lucas moves a foot. Lucas track back so deep for the tackle as it ends up near our 16 yards line and we conceedes a freekick.
Thanks to some team they never have dead ball specialist.
This has been from day 1. or unless the opposition is so foolish they give us 2 acre of land in the middle to pass and move the ball.

I am sorry, But I haven't seen anything better from alst year apart from scrapped points.

Positives: we have two sold cb's in Sakho and Agger. Really don't know why they never play together. Rodgers seems fixated on strtel because he was solid for a few games, and Toure because he stated season well. For me, it would be Sakho/Agger. And I don't care about footedness (ie. all players at this level should be able to use either foot).

Positive: Coutinho, Alberto. Both look like future stars.

Negatives: complete lack of wingbacks, and slow, non-dynamic midfield. This will take time to fix, and dipping into the market. Bigger issue is that while Rodgers is happy switching the CBs at will, he can't seem to sit Gerrard for a game. I don't think that can be explained solely on Gerrards form

Agree0 Disagree0

For me, I think the solution is simple- switch the roles of Gerrard and Henderson. Gerrard is much more of an attacking threat than Henderson and Henderson offers the work rate needed to play next to Lucas that Gerrard lacks. To me it seems like we've been playing with square pegs in round holes in the midfield. For Norwich, I'd personally like to see how a Henderson/Allen partnership as the two holding mids would get on.

Agree0 Disagree0

Moses gets paid a lot of money. His work ethic was a disgrace. He should be dropped. A poor performance, a mistake, an own goal whatever! - They can happen to anybody. But being too lazy to run, too idle to care what happens? It is unforgivable. He shouldn't play another game for our club.

Hey eds and reds,
Amongst all the sack br talk and sell all the players, I believe that LFC clearly have a problem and maybe we should be more constructive in finding the solution.
We can't just keep begging for more money and new signings every 6 months. Instead maybe br needs to go back to basics first, so get a settled back four in place with a good balance. Johnson, skrtel/agger (if him and br sort out there differences) sakho, cissokho. Flanagan has done ok but he offers little or nothing going forward and I think cissokho just needs some games, after all it does take time to adapt.
Then the main area of concern. cm, we lack positional discipline and mobility. So maybe we need to give Gerald a much needed rest and bring in allen alongside hendo with Lucas behind them. There is also the problem of where do you utilise gerrard these days?! Do you push him further forward (as br saying he could play cb nearly made me fall off my chair) or do you keep him deep lying and play him for 60 mins, or use him as an impact sub for the last 30 like man u have done successfully with giggs?! This will be br biggest call at LFC, but he has so far been reluctant to do this!
I personally think that its clear that after 60 mins we are getting caught out due to our lack of mobility and legs in the cm, so maybe gerrard should be replaced by that time! But maybe we could use him further forward once more, in one on ones he is possibly are best finisher so why not put him up the top with suarez taking up other postions off him?
But for the time being I would rest him and play coutinho and suarez in behind aspas! He hasn't played in hi preferred position as yet and is a willing runner in behind, this is the time to see what he can offer as the boy can finish and will work all day up front. However suarez and coutinho would have to work back at times to make this work; something that they are both capable of doing.
So the formation would be 4-3-2-1, however at home a 4-3-1-2 could be implemented depending on the opposition.

Obviously we are all upset about the Hull game, and surely the players are too. I think we can agree that BR got it wrong with putting Moses and Sterling alongside Suarez, but I suspect he simply didn't want to risk Coutinho (and probably thought we didn't need him against a very poor Hull side).

I personally think we are going to have to give this guy Aspas a chance. Against Norwich we really only have a few options. For me, it would have to be Suarez up top with Coutinho and Aspas (all three can swap positions and hopefully beat Norwich with speed and finesse). I would drop Gerrard and start Allen. Back four for me would be a return to three CBs since our wingbacks are so poor. Perhaps Toure/Sakho/Agger. Yes, I have excluded Skrtel, because I can see after the Hull game he is starting down an all to familiar path. He seems to lose confidence easily, and surely is at an all time low after the own goal, and being ripped apart by Hull dynamic duo of Koren and Sagbo (apologies for sarcasm, Koren and Sagbo.).

I think we all know what a non-win against Norwich will mean for the fans and more importantly, our survival over xmas period. Amazing how a single loss can change the entire outlook on the season. A bit dramatic, but I think we could all see the warning signs.

Following these suggestions i'm not sure what formation you want but it seems to be: (please post just the once Ed)

-----------------Mingolet
------Toure-------Skrtel--------Sakho
Henderson----Allen------Lucas-------Flanagan?
--------Aspas-----Suarez-----Coutinho

I suppose that could work, but it's very offensive. It'd work better if Rodgers took the plunge and played Brad Smith on the left side. He is quick enough and energetic enough to run the entire flank. Henderson is the only option for the right side unless Rodgers has the guts to bring in McLaughlin. I don't know where the myth that Johnson is good at attacking has come from. I cannot remember the last time he scored or assisted a goal. Was it even this calendar year? West Ham I think? I agree though, Gerrard needs a break. He barely made it through the Hull game, and 2 days rest is not enough for a 33 year old central midfielder. I think its time Rodgers looked to the academy for wing backs though. McLaughlin and Smith are both excellent prospects and Kelly and Flanagan just clearly aren't full backs. Flanno puts in 200% but he is a Mascherano type player. He should be in front of the back 4 doing the dirty work and breaking up attacks. 9 tackles against Everton is proof of that. Kelly is just too injury prone to play a position that requires serious work rate. He will either be a centre back, or fail in football completely. Honestly though, I actually think this team could be our best option. It can also be reverted to a 3-4-1-2 with Coutinho sitting in the hole behind a front two of Aspas and Suarez. I think we will need to go back to 3 in defence though, purely so we can push others forward. If Johnson and Gerrard are not dropped after recent performances though, it sends the wrong message to the rest of the squad. What is the point in McLaughlin and Kelly busting a gut in training if Rodgers won't drop Johnson ever? Same goes for Allen and Alberto, what's the point in them turning up at Melwood? Gerrards status picks him every week regardless of form. I hate to be brutally harsh, but Gerrard is literally a rich mans Charlie Adam. Set pieces, and that is it. He's played well once (in terms of open play contribution) in 15 games and tbh, Fulham gave him so much space, we could've played Coates in centre mid that game (yes I know he has ligament damage and can barely run when fit!). I don't think Rodgers has the bottle to make these big decisions though. He still feels insecure in the job due to the massive pressure the media are heaping on him. The Hull game has really ticked me off, but I'm not saying anything I haven't been saying all season. Yesterday was just the final push to send me over the edge. If Rodgers wants to play Gerrard, he needs to change his system to be built around him in a forward role that suits him. Not shoe horn Gerrard into a defensive midfield/deep playmaker role just because of the name on his shirt. The badge is more important. Gerrard still has immense attacking talent and carries a threat, but you all know what I'm going to say. He should be an impact sub. Rafa did it to Lampard and he scored 15 goals coming on against tiring opposition.

Obviously you'd prefer Agger to Skrtel, but I actually thought Skrtel played well against Hull. He has been our best defender this season, and my only reasoning to put Agger in would be to help us get the ball out of defence. Skrtel seems to have improved in that department though. Aggers Aerial weakness and lack of strength in the tackle worry me though. I'm stuggling to forgive his claims that he should be playing and the subtle threats he will quit if he's not played though. Skrtel, Sakho and Toure don't complain so why should he? The simple fact is, he's 4th best now. Lucas tend to drop into the defence to pick up the ball in his absence and it works really well to be fair. Lucas plays the best line splitting passes in the squad.

I only suggested Henderson because it takes a lot of energy to play right midfield in a 3-4-3. It isn't right wing back. that's why I said it's very offensive and put a question mark by Flanagan. I con't see young Jon offering anything in left midfield. You have to get up and down the pitch all game. Hendo is very good defensively and his pressing is his main weapon as he wins the ball high up the pitch and moves it on to those capable of doing something dangerous.

hendo did play there in past, and he had the worst crossing for Liverpool. kelly would do it for me. I fully understand his commitment and energy level, let's not forget we have 10 more players who could bring commitment and energy into the game.
I would gladly bench gerrard to play Henderson as CM. what's wrong?

I don't think Brendan blaming that result on Sturidge being injured was very smart. He should have said the team that he put out was more than strong enough to win that game, the players let him down by showing no desire to win.
To me it was a very painful reminder of the consistency problems that have dogged us for years now especially against the so called weaker teams that we seemed to almost get over in the last year.

With Sturidge out and aspas being injured and not quite hitting form yet, I do wonder if Brendan regrets sending borini out on loan. I still think he could play beside Suarez in a similar way Sturidge has done and do a good job there.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The lad was being harangued by a large proportion of fans - he had to be sent on loan to protect his confidence. The fans let the lad down big time and we're now in trouble because Sturridge has picked up a bad injury. A big shame fans couldn't give the lad more time.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Dec 2013 14:32:11
Seano.
Wrong. BR has himself to blame for it. He is a striker and played out wide right. Sturridge played out wide right for chelsea in the past and wanted centrally. suarez would play anywhere.
Borini did got his chance and he either injured himself or didn't do well. So BR had only optio to send him on loan.
He isn't getttng a chance with the struggling Sunderland

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry. Wrong.
Borini was injured for the majority of the season. Despite not scoring many goals his performances weren't bad. His positioning was excellent, the space he created for Suarez good. The injuries disrupted his rhythm and confidence and he was always going to need time to regain it. Instead fans jumped on his back, called him "deadwood" and were calling for him to be sold (plenty of people on here were guilty of such comments). Suarez works better and gets more space with a strike partner, Sturridge is injured. If we still had Borini he'd be a useful player for us right now. The fans were bang out of order and now the team is going to suffer as a result.

Sunderland is in a mess. Change of manager hasn't helped, their playing style is not suited to a cultured player - bizarre club to loan him to IMO but with Di Canio there it kind of made sense at the time. Now Borini isn't getting games and we are short of attackers. As a club we lose.

Make no mistake, fans treatment of the player lead to this situation.

Lucky pants have gone in the bin today.
Yesterday was the worst performance for almost exactly 12 months against Villa.
Lifeless, lacking in creativity and confidence it showed up all our deficiencies in one game. The strange thing was, I looked at the team sheet and said to my mate "I don't like this team, I think we're going to struggle today". I expected a flat 0-0 or something.
In my opinion, the team is allowed one of those games a season but now they need to react positively against Norwich. 3points is a must but secondly we need a few goals to rebuild our shattered confidence.
A few comments: Moses is a waste of a wage, he's a championship player at best, terminate his loan please.
We need a new left back - terminate Cissokho's loan too, he useless.
Sterling is not ready, he needs a loan.
Don't think we will cope too well without Sturridge but can't see any other striker signing for us to be bench warmer when DS is fit.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I have to completely agree with Ken.

The team just didn't play like we know they can play. We seem to have these "Off days" after about 3 or 4 matches continuously and that is what is worrying me. There is no consistent level over a 10 or 15 game period and this has been happening for a while. It has got to do with the players rather than the manager.

I have also agree on Moses and Cissokho. They simply are not an upgrade on the current squad players at LFC. Is Moses better than Downing? Nope. Is Cissokho better than Robinson on loan, Nope.

Sterling definitely needs a loan, he has stagnated and needs to play to bring back his confidence and improve his abilities.

Agree0 Disagree0

I totally agree with you mate, we were absolutley awful yesterday but you could predict that from the team sheet.

I think Moses is an average player at best but one who thinks he is world class. He has no football brain, he just gets the ball and runs with it until he either scores (which is rare) or loses possesion and gets crowded out.
He only has a good reputation because every now and again one of them runs results in a goal, like against Swansea on his debut, but he is not a consistent performer.

Sterling needs a change of scene for a while, taking him out this first team was meant to freshen him up so he could have a big impact when called upon but every chance he has had this season he has blown.

The lack of quality yesterday was shocking, Henderson and Suarez, despite their effort and commitment, were poor.

Rogers has said today the squad is not big enough to cope with the loss of Sturridge and Coutinho, which is a fair comment.
However, that doesn't explain why we conceded 3 goals after he invested so heavily in the defence.
He needs to decide on a settled back 4 and stick with it because our defending is costing us points.
We should have held on for a win last week after leading twice, and we should have atleast drew yesterday.

Now, as well as wins against Norwich and West Ham, we need a few good results in the away games at Spurs, City and Chelsea.

Good Post from all three above.
Few good points. Moses is a waste of signing. cannot believe he is targetting 20 goals a season?.
Cisshkho Yes. he is slower than tortoise.I always wonder, When a struggling Valnecia loan a player, iT has to be the worst they ever saw.
Aspas and alberto needs to start next game.
Lucas-Hendo-Allen in the middle would do it for me. No Gerrard, let's see how good we are with that midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

First time I'd actually agree with you with regards to Stevie G. I don't think he was overly bad yesterday, however, in a week with up to three games, I'd maybe save him for West Ham and see how we get on against Norwich with hendo, allen and lucas!

Borini is on Loan. don't think Poyet would allow him to make a Guest appearance after 70 mts?
Aspas and Alberto as the victims of BR"s karma.
llori would start after jan once we sell Skertel.

But I agree, Out of all I would certainly take sakho with us, Rest are pure average or below average players.

Yesterday was poor but for those calling for BR's head are just simply outrageous.

I don't agree with his constant tinkering of the back 4 and for him to blame injuries is wrong IMO.

The players he picked yesterday were good enough yet they just didn't perform. There was no intensity in our passing so we never opened them up. Hull played well and did what was expected and put men behind the ball, hats off to them.

It will be a tough game on Wednesday but I still believe we have a chance for top 4.

It was always going to be a battle for 4th and we are still in it. We will lose games again and as we have seen already any team is capable of beating anyone.

Lay off BR as he's doing a good job.

Rubbish, Yesterday was a por performance from argubly the worst team sheet.
I, Nor anyone would ever start Moses ahead of anyone. Sterling is a good player, But when you send Ibe out on loan, You should have sent Sterling too. If countinho was injured, I would have given Alberto to play as a ACM, 9 mill is a good money.
Aspas is here to play, Not to warm the bench.
We lost coz, we had no desire, no intention and we had 0 shots on goal, that shows how much quality we had on the pitch.

Agree0 Disagree0

The manager has to take a certain amount of blame, if we are playing the blame game. He put out the team, it's pretty much his squad now and he sees them in training everyday.

Agree0 Disagree0

No, I understand those asking for him to be sacked. Sturridge and Coutinho have pulled wool over our eyes, and made us forget the rest of Rodgers' horrific transfers in the past. Borini for £11mil doesn't look like it will work out, nor does Allen for £15mil. Moses, despite his ability, looks lazy. Rodgers spent £20mil on Alberto, Aspas and Ilori but refuses to play them now. I don't know why Sakho isn't playing if we spend £17mil on him. We have hardly performed well this season, others have just failed. Yes we are fourth. We are also 3 points off ninth. All of this makes the January transfer window vital. We could either challenge for the title, or have another 'transition' season.

Spot on mate we never had the squad depth and belief and desire to win the title this year. Fingers are still crossed though obviously.

Agree0 Disagree0

02 Dec 2013 09:18:18
Bit of perspective needed I think, I think most of if not all people would agree that top 4 this year would be seen as a good achievement this season & hopefully give us a platform to build on for next season? But due to a lot of inconsidencies frm all the other 'big clubs' lfc found our selves in a tittle challenge. I think xmas period will see most of the title challangers iron out there creases & we will get a better picture of where the title will end up come may, now i'm not sayin lfc won't be in that picture because if ls7 performs to the level he did for his first 8 games this season then I think any team is beatable.
Now onto yesterday, it was a shocking day in the office & I don't think I have seen us play as slow & laboured this season as that & hopefully it a blip & 6 points out of the next 2 games would help us 4get & put us back within a shout but to be honest I think a few set backs like that can be flipped & players made sure not to get too complacent, EVERY game in the EPL is a tough one & u need to be 100% in every match or you get punished. Heres hoping for a jolly xmas & if we still in top 4 come january 1st then I think we could all accept it been a good calendar year.

Agree0 Disagree0

They may not be as polite as me but we jus got a third of the way through the season & yet supporters writing them off. There will b a lot of finger pointing & questions will need 2 b answered come end of the season if certain targets aren't achieved so let's leave it till the end of the season eh? let's try support our team & leave finances to people who actually know what they talkin about.

I think most fans want the best for the club, just everyone has different ideas how we get there. I for one think brendan got a nice philosophy of how the game should b played & we should stick to it & think with a few more additions we will b fine. I thought it was just a bad day at the office yesterday. The players seemed complacent and Hull took advantage of that. It's massively disappointing though as if you ignore our first 3 games, we have picked up just 15 points in our last 10 games. We seriously need to hit some form as we can't keep grinding out results. The 4-3-3 formation does not work with Gerrard in the side. The only game he's looked his best in was the Fulham match where we played 4 central midfielders and took him off for the last 25minutes. Yes his set pieces have been pin point, but we cannot sacrifice open play quality for corners and free kicks. I keep banging the drum but I really hope we sign a top central midfielder in January and use Gerrard more sparingly. An earlier post touched on the amount of space we give the opposition in midfield and that's because Lucas and Gerrard have the acceleration of a steam train. Lucas has great tackling and positional play, Gerrard has great set pieces. I think Lucas is good at the tip of a reverse midfield triangle, and Hendo and Coutinho could be great in the more forward roles. Gerrard has got 3 goals and 4 assists from 15 games. 2 of the goals were penalties, and the other a free kick. 3 of his assists came from set pieces. I'm pretty sure you all hounded Charlie Adam out of the club for lacking mobility and only being useful from set pieces/cross field passes. I'm no expert though so really don't know what type of player to buy to sort out this problem. I just hope Rodgers can see it and does know what to do. Hopefully the players pick it up and vent their frustrations on next weeks opposition. At least this will serve as a reality check to the team and they might realise the season doesn't end at Christmas!

The last time I saw him running or pressing for a ball is long gone.
Henderosn is playing for Liverpool fc to press?. can you believe that?. which team does that?
You know when we loos the ball, its very hard to get back the ball unless Hendo or even sturridge or suarez track back. Lucas and gerrard would not move an inch.

Y did BR bought Allen a DLP? when you simply cannot play him?. Alonso played with MAsch in the center. a perfect DLP with a strong DM, Gerrard bieng the best ACM behind the perfect torres.

Now, we have a DLP, Allen who is played everywhere execpt as DLP. We have henderson who is a decent CM again played everyhwere including wingback execpt as CM. We have only one DM who might or might not click depends on the opposition.
We have a player whose good as ACM and is played wide left.
What on earth is going on?
Do BR actually have guts to play Lucas- Allen -hendo/countinho atleast once before we actually sell all of them.
We might not have those hollywood passes, But we would have a desire and energy in the middle. we would win back the ball better.
Cant see and yet fans want another CM?
Whats the use of buying another CM when you simply cannot bench Gerrard?.

Ramirez what a player. Oscar would show us why he is in the brazil team and Lucas doesn't make it. and BTW before that match, we would entertain dembele and co and yaya toure and company.

You will not win any match if you have a weak midfield, you might score a few with good strikers. but you certainly cannot survive 90mts of pressure unless you are strong in the middle.

Agree0 Disagree0

At no point would I want Aaron Lenon!

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry I actually agree with you on a point for once. That mourinho has the balls to drop big players and Brendan won't drop Gerrard when he's playing awfull. It's a point I have been banging on about for a while now, I think Brendan's a brilliant manager, I really do. He's done a fantastic job in turning Liverpool round. But he needs to show some faith in our other midfielders and start to actually manage Gerrard rather than allow him to play every minute of every game. Allen or Henderson could force Gerrard onto the bench this year given the chance. They will never replace him either as a talisman or in talent but Gerrard can't last forever.
Gerrard is in no way "done" he's just in decline, but he is still useful he just needs to be managed properly and give up international football.

but what I did not understand was 71 Min we go 2-1 down still did not show any urgency at all.

BR and team should be a bit more ruthless, we are too soft.
We should have replaced Moses and Sterling at halftime, Put in Coutinio and Allen/ Alberto or even a Agger and Put johnson in R.Midfield.

When we were 2-1 down we should have attack-attack and put balls in their box or take long shots, instead we were passing around the back.
Its goood when you are 2-1 up, but when you are down with 20 mins to, we could have given it a go.

I saw at 90 mins, our Defenders and Mid were passing it with not one attempt or long shot at goal?

Bertrand would move to a side who can give him First team football, Is he better than Enrique?. I don't think so, that would be waste of another 10 mill.

Kokeis a superb player who unfortunatly ahs a release clause of 16 mill (the price seems fit in our budget), But there are argubly 5 power hosues waiting to get him.

giovinco was offerd to us as a part of suarez deal and we rejected, we don't have any interest in him.

turan woould be ideal, but would cost us 25 mill, and hence athletico doing brilliant in spain, why would he jump tthe ship to join non CL team?

costa recently signed a contract extension, no way in dream he would come to us.

If the team plays poorly as today then who do we blame? if the balance of the team is wrong, who do we blame? if we don't show enough creativity in front of goal is it the players fault, the manager, or the training methods? if some players can't hit a barn door shouldn't they spend time practicing their shooting? if we concede too many goals from corners and set piece's then should we not work harder on this in training? BR has been here long enough to recognise these problems and they are still unchanged, I know we are doing better but surely as manager he should have sorted these out by now, I am not anti BR, but I am concerned that things that were wrong when Kenny was manager are still wrong today, e.g we have been crying out for a strong CM but we brought in defenders? now we have 6 central defenders if you include Coates and Kelly we only play 2 at a time? it seems illogical to me.
i don't want to get on anyones back but it's frustrating to watch when we play like we did at Hull, BR said it was because we don't have the quality! then why don't we have it? we have loads of young signings that are not ready, that have to be loaned out for 1 or maybe 2 seasons when we need quality NOW! someone please explain.
