Sissoko had a good debut, but let's see how the situation develops long term I remember el hadji diouf getting 2 goals on his debut, best of luck for tomorrow think we may beat city.
Paisley's genius

Sissoko is a very good player and i'm sure newcastle will get planty of offers come next season.

Too much back slapping and punching the air : ) But then that's the geordies and pardew all over.

Not LFC related, but was anyone else trying to figure out why Crouch was playing LB for Arsenal? The facial resemblance is just uncanny.

ajh, good luck to yourselfs, also good luck in your search for a new goalkeeper mate. lfc

Yeh, hope we win tommorow, but then hope City win their remaining games and Utd f**k it all up! Uglygeordiegenius

Cheers AJH.

I hope your lot don't win so much as a throw-in for the rest of the season.

AJH, thanks for the 'gritted teeth' good luck message. Pity you couldn't say you hope that we win 3-0 as you said on your own site. But then you might have had to add the other thing you said, that we are 'mid-table nonentities'

Question for ed001
1. Ed there are lot of good defenders, mid and strikers are produced in football. But why good GK are rare in football?. Is it due to lack of playing experience for the young ones at top level or coaching issues?
2. Someone in Banter rated GK Ryan Fulton very highly. Is he any good?
st
ynwa {Ed001's Note - because most kids playing footie only get put in goal because they are useless. Personally I think coaches need to look for keepers in different sports, ones that emphasise hand eye co-ordination. Maybe a sport such as squash, which requires extremely fast hand and foot movements, would be a better starting place for a keeper?}

Personally, I think there are a lot of good keepers out there, but it's got to be a very difficult position to scout for. Given only one plays primarily for every team, I suspect there are quite a few fantastic ones who just never get a chance.

RDL

In the prophetic words of Mr Fergal Sharky ''A good Hart these days is hard to find, true gloves, the lasting kind''. It must be said that of late Joe has proven himself ''Head and shoulders'' above the rest. In my opinion keepers are akin to drummers in ''rock and roll' 'bands, so in the first instance, when scouting, one should attempt to identify only complete f*&^king persons. In this way you won't go far wrong! Uglygeordiegenius

03 Feb 2013 07:08:23
I always have said an athletic basketball power forward or center might make a good keeper. Quick agile good hand eye and large wingspan. Imagine LeBron in goal. It would be useless to cross a ball in the box. With proper coaching that is
FL Matt

Youth hand ball is another game to look for young keepers

Thank you ed and reds for the reply

£45 million offer for Suarez. Do we stick or twist?

It's coming in the summer. should we take it?

MULDER

Depends who our manager is.

I wouldn't trust Rodgers with 45 million. Don't want another 3 Joe Allen's or 4 Borinis.

If we have a better manager then I would consider it only if Luis wanted to go.

Depends on what can be done with it for me. Say we could somehow get Reus, Ogbonna, and Leno (as an example- 25M, 10M, 10M) for that money then I would say yes as I think the squad would be improved overall.

Conversely, if it were spent on neo-Carroll, then no.

How about a rugby wing forward Ed's? Fast, strong, brave, tough, agile and usually got good hands.

Suarez is in the top ten players in the world and is probably the best in England. We're lucky to have him and we must keep him.

Mantis.

Mulder - why would we accept £45m for a player at the top of his game when we got £50m for someone who had not turned up for the previous 18 months - doesn't make sense at that figure

Puzzled

45 mill you are joking if ronaldo worth 80 mill then Louis can't be far off that, question why don't english teams do what spanish teams do and put stupid amounts buy out clauses in to players contracts it works for them us mugs go their yearly and pay over the odds for their players?

Hi,
Just wondering if any of the Ed's can confirm or deny that Andy Carroll deal will go through at the end of the season. I am hearing 21mil. 3 mill loan fee and 18 mil buy fee. I think that is a tremendous deal if we can get it for a championship striker. any thoughts on the truth of this? YNWA {Ed002's Note - Search engine please.}

It's a good deal if true, but still £14 mill short.

Is it true that in the past 12 months of transfers Liverpool have saved 600k a week in wages? Even with players coming in.

Big fan of what you guys do on here btw. {Ed002's Note - There have been savings.}

Which is good because we don't want players on silly money just happy to pick up there wages.

Mighty reds

Doni 60k, Cole 90k, Sahin 80k, Kuyt 80k, Bellamy 70k, Maxi 70k, Carroll 80k, Spearing £4. 99 and a multipack of monster munch.

We have increased Agger, Skrtel, Shelvey, Suso, Suarez and Sterlings wage.

Plus brought in Assaidi, Coutinho, Borini, Sturridge and Allen so I see it as unlikely to be anywhere near £600k.

Savings have been made though, with the average age and talent potential increased?

We also got rid of mereiles, poulsen, el zhar, koncheskey, kyrgiakos, ngog, and I'm sure a few more.

I realize that this is our Liverpool Banter page, but I wanted to comment on two fallen heroes: Benitez and Torres. Both look sad and out of sorts at Chelsea. I am certainly not on the 'bring them back' bandwagon, but as a former admirer of both spaniards, I feel sorry that they are ridiculed at Chelsea. They are both Liverpool legends, and I for one don't like to see our legends fail (except perhaps against us!)

Canada Red

Top post. Whilst I am a United fan (bring it on), you are dead right that people are very quick to forget their heroes. Football fans in particular can be fickle.

AJH

Torres was good but you cannot call him a club legend i'm afraid.
derryred

02 Feb 2013 21:00:31
excllent post. I love both of them and rate both very high.
sterling, suso, shelvey, the academy. its all rafa benitez.

Benitez did bring the pride back to the club. Who can forget those magical European nights. ?

All LFC fans know he did his absolute best for the club.

MULDER

I'm a Liverpool fan and I would classify Torres as one of the most exciting players to ever grace the grass of anfield, but legend? Not for me. Dictionary definition of legend is. One that inspires or achieves legendary fame. For me, it's not just how you start but also how you finish. Torres ended his career at Liverpool too sulky or me. He broke too many hearts the way he left. But, I'm glad he played for us though. So, half a legend, you choose - leg or end.

Benitez - legend, he loved Liverpool and tried his best to expose the cowboys that tried to take us for a ride!

Wow never thought I'd agree with a Manchester United fan lol

Ack17

Now Steven Gerrard is a legend

He turned his back on the club when he was needed most, don't forget that.

02 Feb 2013 20:12:53
I personally feel that a win is on the cards tomorrow against City. They rely heavily on Yaya Toure (IMO) to boss the midfield, and without him they will be looking to Silva to dictate play. If Gerrard shows the form he's had prior to the Arsenal game, and we keep the same squad as against Arsenal (with Enrique in and Wisdom out) I think we can pull off a massive 2 - 1 win.

Man City have been unbeatable at their stadium and we haven't beaten a top 10 team. Something has to give, and the time is now!

Looking forward to a brace from Sturridge! Mancini will be focusing on Suarez, and Sturridge will make them pay the price.

Coop

You've been on the sherry haven't you?

AJH

02 Feb 2013 22:14:17
Whilst I'm a realist I agree we can beat City tomorrow because having watched them at home I think they are one dimensional predictable and very rigid which will suit us down to the ground, without Toure is a massive loss. Liverpool tend to struggle with fast pace teams and intricate play around the box which I think they don't pocess.

@AJH - appreciate you're comments b4 mate but why are you having around a Liverpool page being a self confessed Utd fan?

''Don't posses''? Silva, Teves, Aguero? Yaya Toure is a great player but City are still Very strong without him. Barry will probably fill in and give us plenty to think about. I'm optimistic but a ''cake walk'' it won't be! Uglygeordiegenjus

my god did we miss out. moussa sissoko what a player!

jay b

One of the biggest mysteries of Dalglish's reign. What did he see in Adam/Henderson that he didn't in Moussa.

Ash

No mate, a three game wonder

I think based on the arsenal performance we can see why henderson was chosen. Unless we wanna base players on one game, then I can't believe we missed out on buttner, he scored a goal on his debut!

Hendo has been great of late though mate. Why are we still having digs at him?

Oh what a surprise. Ash is launching another infantile attack on Kenny Dalglish after one good game by Sissoko, while conveniently ignoring the fact that Jordan Henderson has been playing rather well recently.

Red Owl

Here we go yet again, it's always the same on here, a new signing for another team scores and people come on here saying why didn't we buy him? It's because we didn't want him because he ain't enough for us! Get a grip

James

He was poor in france this season hence he went newcastle and not Liverpool, arsenal, spurs and teams fighting for top 4

He had 2 decent moments in an otherwise poor game, I though. The chasing down of Cole (brilliant) and the 2nd goal (good strike with a fair amount of luck). 1st goal was poor goalkeeping by Cech. He was pretty much anonymous the other 88 minutes.

You not screaming for Rodger's head anymore Red Owl? Like you were after about 8 PL games into the season?

Henderson has been playing well recently, and at a price of £16m, you would hope so!

Ash

My views regarding Brendan are largely irrelevant so far as this issue is concerned. The question to be answered is why are you still carrying out a hate campaign against Kenny and anybody connected with him? The argument that Kenny is to blame for signing other midfielders ahead of Sissoko is flawed, because it would be possible to accuse Brendan of precisely the same thing, another fact that you have conveniently ignored, alongside Jordan Henderson's current good form, of course, plus that of Luis Suarez, another player you have attacked to the point of obsession in the past.

Red Owl

Red Owl

Take your handbags outside, ladies

I wouldn't have said 'Sissoko, what a player'. I would have said 'Sissoko, what a game he had!'
Takes a hell of a lot longer than 90mins for a footballer to achieve the 'wow what a player' status for me.

sivy1001

Merely a case of my hoping to introduce little bit of perspective, rather than one of hand-bags I hope, Mr Anonymous.

Red Owl

I merely pointed out that it was, and still is a mystery that he did not sign him. Same as Honda, same as Turan.

You could well say Rodgers also missed out, but then you have to take in to account that Rodgers has signed only one centre midfielder and there is not any room for another, especially when we were desperately thin in other areas.

I think you need to stop being so sensitive Mr. Owl. The players I always sighted as an absolute waste of money from the off were Downing, Adam and Carroll. Henderson I though we hugely overpaid on and wouldn't have been was overated, but he always worked hard and that goes a long way. I am happy he is starting to prove me wrong, but you could also argue that Rodgers knows how to play him and Kenny didn't (starting him in the centre instead of the right).

I think you are thinking of someone else if you think I have ever attacked the jewel in our crown, Luis Suarez.

A "hate campaign"? Do leave off. I'm just stating what everyone will be thinking.

Ash

In response to Ash, the fact that both Kenny and Brendan choose not to sign Sissoko is not a mystery. It simply appears to have been a case of neither manager feeling that signing Sissoko was necessary, a decision that was also taken by just about every other manager who had the player watched, Pardew aside. The fact that Sissoko's value seems to have dropped significantly between the reigns of Kenny and Brendan is indicative of the general loss of interest in the player. If Kenny had tried to sign Sissoko he would certainly not been available for £3.5m, because his value at the time was far higher. Until Sissoko has played for a season or two, it will be impossible to know whether or not he even represents value for £3.5m. As numerous other posters have mentioned, using one good game to claim that Kenny, or indeed, Brendan, should have signed the player instead of Henderson, or Allen, or anybody else, seems reactionary. It simply is not possible to sign all of these players. I am delighted that you no longer view all of Kenny's signings as a waste of money, because it is a point on which we can agree, just as we can agree that Luis Suarez is indeed the jewel in the crown. A win this afternoon, with goals from Luis, Jordan, or anybody else for that matter, and we will all be smiling, regardless of other views.

thank you ed 52 for the profile on coutinho, top class as usual. after a few dark years I haven't being happier as a red fan. a good young manager with a focused plan, he knows what he wants, suarez commiting to Liverpool this week, man is a class act. coutinho now in. for me a commanding center half and a tough type of midfielder, box to box type of player, strong and a little dirty when needed to handle stoke/oldham type games. with young players coming through we will fly. fourth probably out of reach, never know though, next season I can't wait for.
again thanks for all your info and work eds

We did bring back benitez, and then we sent him straight out on loan to chelsea. he's doing a marvelous job, won't hear a word said against him : D

Yeah Benitez as finished as a top class manager. He changes the team to much and always whinges about the size of his squad. I believe he picks to many arguments rather than getting on with the job.

Mighty reds

How any Manager can be expected to work in a situation like that is beyond me. Booed by his 'own' supporters before he'd even had one game.

To all those who take great delight in having a dig at Rafa every chance you get, you have very short memories. I'll tell you just 2 things, Rodgers will never manage a team in a Champions League final - Rafa did that twice with Liverpool and was seconds away from a third. Secondly, Rafa would never have had Suarez playing virtually left back, as he was against Arsenal. Rodgers is so inflexible that, to accommodate Sturridge, he has to have our best player and goalscorer tracking back on the left.

Suarez just committed himself to the club. If anything makes him change his mind, it will be being forced to run up and down the left touchline week after week!

redmersey

Redmersey gerrard played right back in the champions league final so that renders one argument pointless. Also they are having a dig at the muppets who think that rafa should be appointed as Liverpool coach again every time we don't win.
derryred

Why is everything black and white with you persons, you don't factor anything into what a manager has to deal with.

You just pick your best 11 and send them out onto the pitch, is that all a manager does?

He is yet again working within a massively negative atmosphere ( ok he knew what he was getting into, so sympathy is in short supply ) but to give the impression he is a poor manager so as to big up BR is piss poor on your behalves.

I didn't want him to come back in the summer but have maximum respect for the man and for the fans who still hold him high regard.

Cant say i'm surprised by your posts though having seen the way you have treated our all time living legend. SHAMEFUL!!

Waro

Waro say what you want. Ok rafa won number 5 which is superb but he also wasted a couple of seasons at our club as well by changing the team too much. He then tried to sell Alonso and that was the start of our demise.

Mighty reds

I have massive respect for Rafa but I'm sick of hearing the "in Rafa we trust" line.
He went at the right time (if anything a little too late) and I certainly don't want him back

Chris in Tamworth

Derryred, I can't agree with you fully. Gerrard played Right Back for about 30 mins in the Champions League against AC Milan, out of need arising during the game. Suarez was backtracking against Arsenal because Rodgers is inflexible. He basically plays one up front centrally and 2 wide, who have to track back. So, it won't be for just 30 minutes, that will be his position while Sturridge is in the team. What a waste!

redmersey

Suarez was back tracking against Arsenal precisely because Rodgers is flexible. If you can't see that we played an entirely different game against Arsenal than normal (absorb and counterattack versus tiki-taka) to try and offset their pace advantage, then I'm not sure what else to say?

ed you still stand by your statement. Sissokkho not good enough.
he is having a cracker.
its only our signing needs time to adapt to EPL. others adapt from the day one.
we still have an open challenge.
loic remy will score more goals than borini all life in EPL. {Ed052's Note - None of us said he wasn't good enough. I said Remy wasn't good enough. And anyway, Sissoko isn't good enough for us, at this time. He has made a good move - but he wouldn't dislodge our best midfielders. What you say about Remy is complete shit. Do you support a football team, or are you a glory hunter?Or maybe you just support different players on different days?}

Who is good for us eds borini? Allen? Brendan is not the man for Liverpool. look at Southampton manager he only been in epl for 2 weeks and they are playing better football than us!! we have the best striker in epl in suarez and we are 7th and we havened won against teams above us. BR have spend £50 mill we shuld be fighting for the title not for top 4.

Two goals on your debut is great mate but you can only judge players overall after a season or atleast a certain period of time, not one game.

This should be so so obvious to anyone with even the smallest amount of football knowledge

Kelly Red

Loool?you said it ed, slating the guy that he has been poor for years and would not be a good signing. our best midfielders?i would take him over lucas right now

02 Feb 2013 21:03:28
ed you are absolutly wrong here.
loic remy for 7 mill
sissokho for 2 mill
is 150000 better than allen and borini.
in terms of game, and price.
simple as that. {Ed052's Note - Borini is better than Remy, and will score more Prem goals by the end of the season. Sissoko has played one friken game and is the new messiah, who is the ''best CM in the World'' now, according to most accounts}

02 Feb 2013 16:57:36
For the "Rodgers out" crowd. Have a look at how well things are going at Chelsea. That's what happens when you repeatedly chop and change managers, even if you get good ones (AVB, Di Matteo and Rafa aren't crap managers), there's no long term stability and it hurts the club's long term results, even if you do get the occassional bounce (even if that bounce wins you the Champions League).

That Chelsea team should be challenging for the league, not looking over their shoulder at Spurs and Arsenal.

- Something Red -

Since chopping and changing managers they've won 3 titles, a champions league, and plenty of domestic cups.

Nah I vote for the Arsenal method, pretty football a long term manager and an empty trophy cabinet.

02 Feb 2013 19:49:39
I was talking about their chopping and changing since sacking Ancelotti actually. All but two of those trophies were won before he was sacked.

But hey, if you want to believe sacking managers at a rate of more than once per season brings you long term success, then please, give me a realistic replacement for Rodgers, and approx how long we should give him? And then who we'll replace that guy with.

- Something Red - {Ed002's Note - Liverpool has had the same number of managers as Chelsea since Ancelotti left the club and Benitez left Liverpool. As I have explained before, if it isn't working then it needs to be changed. LIke cutting a bad part out of an apple. Barcelona had half a dozen managers in about three years at the start of the 00s. Real Madrid has had 10 managers in the last 10 years - Inter 6 in the past three years. And so it goes.}

02 Feb 2013 21:05:02
chelsea can't afford to loose 2-3 matches in a row. they are title challengers.
we are rebuilders. so BR is enough.

Yes ed but Barcelona and Madrid had brilliant top class players and a good transfer budget as well. Inter haven't won much since Benitez so changing manager every season hasn't been particularly successful for them. Chelsea have lots of money to spend and are no doubt underachieving this season. As you pointed out Liverpool are also chopping and changing and it is also not proving very fruitful, with only one trophy and 3 poor league finishes. I agree sometimes a manager has to go, however when does it become silly?
derryred

Chelsea have proven you can have success with chopping and changing
Man Utd have proven you can have success by longevity.

It matters not how long you give the manager, it's about whether he's a good manager or not.
Rafa win all his trophies with us in his first few seasons, then went 5 without anything.
Wenger is having similar problems.

Basically a manager should be judged on the resources available and the expectations of the board.
Liverpool has proven it has better resources than Rodgers is delivering on and also Werner said top 4 is vital.

It's clear enough Rodgers needs top 4 to keep his job.

I actually agree with you, Ed002, but dropping RDM (who didn't seem to be doing too badly to an outside observer) in favor of a temporary Rafa appointment does seem a strange one.

Just got some news from a friend down south that may be a concern for those on merseyside. Both Brendan Rogers and David Moyes are both managerial targets for Chelsea in the summer. Abramovich looking for some stability at the club after years of hiring and firing. He now sees that it's done more harm than good. He wants to build a young team that will dominate for the next 10 years at least. He's been impressed with how Rogers team has been playing and see what he's trying to do with regards to building for the future. He also recognises what David Moyes has done with a small transfer budget and his ability to bring out the best in his players.

Rafa's days are numbered and with Guardiola joining Bayern and Mourinho waiting for one of the Manchester jobs, he's ran out of current world class options. The summer is a long way off, but If Moyes fancies it I think that would be a good fit for Chelsea. As long as they back him and have patience. With regards to Brendan Rogers despite his links to Chelsea, I think he'd rather stay at Liverpool to finish what he started. Plus his job is absolutely safe for the whole of his contract. But let's wait and see.

James Welsh

It was only going to be a matter of time before any decent, self respecting managers started turning down the Chelsea job. No decent manager will touch it now, and fair play to Pep for saying how it is. Yes, some managers will take it for the money - knowing they will get a handsome pay off in the not too distant future, but they won't take the job to try to build a team or a legacy. Romans' history of ridiculous expectations and poor decision making is finally (and rightly) catching up with him.

Nick

Personally think Brendan is building something worthwhile at anfield & don't think he would leave for the chaos that is Chelsea, abromovich is used to getting what he wants it is the way with billionaires & they want it yesterday he may want stability now but come next September & the possibility of no champions league slipping away I think he would revert to type & it is this philosophy that is scaring a lot if the top managers away, if moyes was offered the job & took it it would be interesting to see how it would go.

02 Feb 2013 20:49:16
Roman can have Moyes. Moyes has taken Everton as far as he can and the best thing for him now would be to tuck Fellaini under his arm as a present and move on down to the Bridge.

Brendan would have no interest in moving to Chelsea. Brendan is already at the best football club this country has. Anywhere else would be a step down.

We are building something pretty special at our club and for all his money though Roman has in the past looked to buy our players he cannot buy our history our passion and our spirit.

We are making real progress and we will all be proud of what we achieve. Many of today's fans may not have known Shankly first hand but most are aware of his legacy and his spirit lives on at our club and is the guiding light for us all. Roman you just don't know what a real football club is.

Just where would Everton be without Moyes and Fellani? here's hoping they do one in the Summer, after all it ain't going to get much better if they stay there.

Must say Michael Ngoo is seriously impressing on his loan spell. Another goal for Hearts today and what a goal, skipping past two players and rifling a shot into the bottom corner. A goal today and another last week. that's 2 in 3, he's also got 2 MOTM awards plus he scored a pen in the shootout in the scottish cup semi-final.

Ed do you think if he continues to put in consistent performances he may work his way into BR's plans or is he heading out?

Its not how we started season but how we finish matters most. Just to give you guys a fact that at one point this season we had less points then Aston Villa and West Brom had 12 points gap with us. Now things are much different. Under Kenny we started last season well and finished rubbish albeit one scrappy cup win and Lucky runner up on other but poor in league due to more importance to those cups. Loads of people has mentioned this season we have failed to win against any team placed higher then us. Well if this is case we only got 4 teams higher then us we have left to play this season out of 14 games left for us. Man City, Spurs, Chelsea and Everton and 10 games against teams below us so I would happily lose 4 games and win 10 to get another 30 points if it is possible. I think we just need to be little consistent and we will look after our self. Keep faith.
Harry Oldbury {Ed052's Note - If we win 10 out of 14, we will finish 4th too}

{Ed052's Note - If we win 10 out of 14, we will finish 4th too}
========================
I love your optimism Ed052; Statistically a club need over 67 points to get 4th spot. so we will need 2 draws at least from the more difficult 4 games. saying that thinking that we will win all of the games with the teams below us in the table is very wishful thinking.
If we get around 60 points, (I will guess around 5 -> 7th spot), then for me "well done Brendan, but you need to do better next season".

Roy

Plus after the city game away we play all these teams. spurs, Everton and Chelsea at home so it's an advantage, I'd love a win tomorrow but it doesn't seem likely against city but fingers crossed

Why do people keep saying that a bid of 40 million will be enough for us to sell suarez. I would of thought 50 or 60 million would be closer if we did think about it. kls

24 million for RVP 1 year on contract left 29 yrs old

suarez 26 new 5 contract signed few months back better all round player than RVP so 3 yrs younger 4 yr more on a contract so ye defo worth 60million any less is a joke (hes happy here though an wants to stay in Liverpool so I wouldn't sell him no matter what)

Django

He is one of the top 5 players in the world right now. He is easily worth well north of 60 but I wouldn't take anything right now because I don't think we would get anyone that is near his quality and we will need him next year to push for fourth. hope we can add some experience in the summer so he sees we are trying to make a push for it

YNWA

Suarez is worth what someone would be willing to pay and what we'd be willing to accept. I suspect both of those numbers is lower than 60M, but one never knows, I guess.

What stop at 60m, if Ronaldo was sold for 80m few years back, then taking inflation into account Suarez should at least be 90m. after all he plays for Liverpool.

Roy

Roy sorry mate but he's not better than Ronaldo yet plut his antics are not helping his value.
If he carries on developing and keeps his nose clean then in a few years he will be worth a fortune, at the moment he's just turning heads,
Paul the red

Paul you must be loaded if you don't consider £40m a fortune.

Unfortunately I'm not mate, I was referring to the 90 mil he said he was worth.

Im behind Liverpool Fc and BR win or lose against man city!! Sorry thought I say it b4 we win then most people on here are talking top 4!! or if we lose sack BR get rid ov owners! Been very mixed year but I think we going right way about things we ant got a sugar daddy and I don't want us to have one!
YNWA lfc linc

Havnt got a sugar daddy. 160mil spent in the last 2 callender seasons. don't make me laugh. Liverpool football club have never been shy getting the cheque book out and nothing seems to have changed in that regard

C'mon let's look at net spend. that's what's important, the club have had a large turnover of players in the last couple of seasons. It's fine for clubs like Manchester United to quote net spend (and the Ronaldo sale distorted that for years), but when the press talk about Liverpool they never mention the net spend. I am sure if you checked into the net numbers then we wouldn't be far off Spurs if you were to include the GBP17 mil pre-agreed for big Andy.

Is it me or are people just getting lazier? I remember when this site opened years a go and people posted rumours, occasionally asking the eds for an opinion. Nowadays most of the people just come on here to ask the eds questions rather than posting rumours. Do these people not have search engines such as Google etc? (That was not a question for the eds by the way) RoyalRed

Your right mate, this page would give Liverpool supporters a bad name. nobody seems to think for themselves and the most upsurd transfer rumours grow on here like a virus, not to mention the usual edd, edd edd, edd edd questions
pathetic really

Eds or Reds in your opinion do you think we would have bought sturridge if we had managed to sign dempsey in the summer. I know that dempsey transfer is in the past was just wondering if sturridge was the alternative to dempsey or would we have wanted both?

if its the 1st reason then i'm glad we missed out on dempsey tbh

UCCM {Ed052's Note - I dont think we should have got DS in the summer. Overpriced then. And DS was an alternative}

Take a look at it like this lads.

Everton draw today and Spurs lose to West Brom tomorrow and we beat City, if it does happen;

3 points away from the CL spot.

Up the reds.

You need to take maths lessons.
Go and figure out your mistake.

Is this what they call extreme optimism!

Roy! We're on 35 Everton and Spur's are on 41 if WBA beat Spur's they'll still be on 41! We beat City we'll be on 38 which 3 point's away from 41! so why would he/she take math's lesson's? Where's the mistake?

Sorry Ed's And sorry Roy! Forgot Everton we're 38 point's before Wednesday's game!

I think this transfer window has gone brilliantly. We got a top young england striker, brazilian midfielder with loads of skill and tricker, a new Jordan Henderson who is now twice the player he was last season, a new Downing who at long last is showing why we got him, a new Enrique who has shown he is comfortable as an attacking left sided midfielder and carra showing that he is far far from over in his career.

All in all, a great window for me!

Tel 1949

I would of loved to see us get a forward lin the Carrol mould except with more skill, who is big & strong that will put it about a bit against the cloggers,, Stoke, Oldham & to a degree the back line at Arsenal, we seem too light weight when we come against these teams.

i feel that we are a gk strong powerfull midfielder and one more winger i'd sy from being back in the top 4

It's a work in progress. Can't always get overnight success, but at least we are trying.

We will soon get into the Champions League again and win the League playing fluid, attacking football. It will just take time. SUPPORT the team - eventually we will get to the top again.

There will be more players coming in the summer. the work has already started!

Morning eds,

Just thought I'd share some info about our new signing. Before leaving inter he bought presents for quite a few people. Even as far as to buy some non playing and non coaching staff presents as a Thank you for making him feel so welcome when he first came to into. One of these gifts was a very expensive watch for the kit washer. Not really a rumour or banter but speaks volumes of his character in my opinion. Just Hope he feels as welcome here.

Nevada

I think Couthinho is going to be a huge star for us.
If this story is true, respect to the young lad. It's actions like that which will ingratiate him with Liverpool fans.

In fact first signing in a long time that has got me excited. Last time I was this happy of a signing was Litmanen. not that he did much but he was always one of my idols.

I bet the Liverpool Kit washer is now smiling now as well! - A sneaky extra splash of Lenor Fabric Softener for Mr Coutinho to keep his kit Soft And Gentle I think. ;-)

It's a good time to play city guys. No kompany no yaya toure, no balotelli that's 3 top players not playing come on you reds!

Just pity they have so many others to call on who would be 1st teamers in most PL sides; still, you've got to take your chances so let hope we make the most of them and take the 3 points, 3-1 Suarez brace, DS. please!

Come on lads,

Is ED 52 BRs agent? i'm all for supporting the team but realisticaally there are huge question marks over Rodgers and I feel his tenure will end in 2 years time as an epic failure.

I want to be very wrong but I am far from convinced by the man. {Ed052's Note - What question marks are over BR? Such a supporter, you, ''epic failure''....}

I'm supportive of BR Ed but of course there are question marks over him. He has very little premiership or European experience with no success to speak of.
He's not exactly pulling up trees is he and there is no evidence at all that suggests he will be a success
As I say I am behind him but I'm being supportive through a gut feeling rather than because of any logical reasoning

I'm sure FSG are really upset that they could not select a manager that you like.

Write them a letter and ask for another one. Sounds like you know what you are talking about, so they will definitely listen to you, won't they?

Just let them know that you can see 2 years into the future! Lol.

Levans.

Have a little faith! I for one, have seen a great transformation already, the way we are playing is much better, we've brought in good young players and the young lads we have a showing a lot of promise. I think you should consider that. Give them 2-3 years, there only going to get better. Even the great Shankley couldn't transform the team to world beaters in 1 season.

02 Feb 2013 12:52:11
I'm pleased with the window, Sturridge is extremely talented and if he can keep his head straight and ego in check he will be a top quality signing. Coutinho is a minor risk, given the good price we paid. He has a great footballing brain and it's clear we've lacked some creativity in the final third.

Going forward I imagine with home games, Coutinho, Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling/Downing could all play. Away we probably need more steal/strength in midfield, so Henderson is likely to play given his recent form. Allen will get games, with Lucas likely to being used sparingly until next season. Suso and Shelvey are a little left in the cold, but are likely to be included in the squad and possibly play in Europe.

I don't see a lot changing come the summer with midfield and attack. Ince may come in, with Assaidi likely to be departing in my opinion. Downing is the only other that might leave. He'll fetch a decent sum and that'll be reinvested into a versatile winger.

Our defence and goalkeeper situation will be assessed come the summer. Carra may stay on one more year, with Coates likely to leave and money invested in a stronger and pacier defender. In an ideal world it'll be someone capable of slotting into the DM role also, to give more power in bigger games. Wanyama is a dream signing, which may be possible with AC's money. Kelly and Wisdom can challenger for right and centre back positions, with McLaughlin likely to step up soon. Enrique may continue to be used as a versatile left back and left winger, meaning an experienced left back can come in.

Will Reina stay or go? Against Arsenal he was top class, but his high wages and erratic form may lead us to look for a younger German perhaps?

I think four or five coming in and three/four departing in Coates, AC, Assaidi and Reina is a sensible window. We've got a potential decent amount of money coming in for those players, around £35 mil of so, which added to a kitty of £15 - £20 mil, means we'll be able to buy quality and not just quantity.

Papa G

I agree with a lot of your comments but why get rid if downing just as he's starting to show that he is a good mature player who can handle big situations?

BR now spent 50 million.

We have yet to beat a team in the top
10.

There is no room for sentiment and patience.

He has been backed well financially by the owners.

This is LFC - we now need to push on and win consistently.

If not, then FSG ought to consider a Director of Football or an experienced old head to help guide BR.

M {Ed052's Note - BR has improved every single player in our squad, as well as the new players he has brought in. Team spirit is better than ever, and we are playing some of the best football in the league on a consistent basis. We are only 7 points of 4th, and continue to thump teams lower than us, and have almost beaten teams above us numerous times recently. We are on the up: now is not the time to have any doubt, as there are only suggestions we are going in the right direction}

I think BR is doing a great job. I only question the Allen signing I think we paid way to much but BR is building a strong team who play football I enjoy watching.

Pork chop {Ed052's Allen will come good - he just needs a bit of a rest}

I'll change this before the filters do.

"Person. "

Matt S - YNWA

Agree. Will be shouted down and abused by some saying we are not backing the club. That's rubbish. a bit of honesty is does no harm in the process of improvement.

We haven't beaten a top half team, beaten by Oldham and against Arsenal, although the first half was good (and no more than good) the performance in the second half was like a lower league team getting 11 men behind the ball and hanging on for dear life against a far superior team. Given Louis had a chance at the end.

Just 'disappointment' at losing a 2 goal lead does not scream of ambition and top class managers would find this unacceptable. And what is a 'false winger?' Apologies if I'm being ignorant but if he's a winger he's a winger and play him as a winger. if he has a trick or two let him perform. Why complicate it? Maybe the team against City will be:

1. False goalkeeper
2. False right back
3. False left back
4. False centre back
5. False centre back
6. False right winger
7. False striker
8. False midfield
9. False striker
10. False no 10
11. False midfield

And dare I say it FALSE MANAGER and FALSE COACHES.

RedDoc {Ed052's Note - We didn't lose a 2 nil lead against Arsenal, they pulled the game back. We lost to Oldham, ok, fine, we want to win cups, but games like that keep the romance alive, and means more teams dont go out of business. You don't find one of your best performances of the season unacceptable mate. We had 11 high quality players out, playing at their best against Arsenal, and, Arsenal played some of the best stuff they can, which was why they are always seen as title contenders.}

02 Feb 2013 13:22:41
Hilarious wit there RedDoc.

Wasted on here, you should do stand-up.

- Something Red -

We are not playing well!
Football is about 2 strategies attack and defence and we only appear to be good at one element.
And before someone says we need to give him time to build his own team. the players we have in defence had one of the best records in previous seasons but since his arrival all of a sudden they are poor!

BR does seem to have a good handle on setting the team up to attack which is nice to watch but it flatters to deceive. His defensive setup though is frustrating and infuriating. I see reference to Barcelona but they know how important the defence setup is. BR for me has not addressed this in half a season. he should have done this in the first 10 games which makes me think he doesn't actually have a clue

The other factor with this high tempo high pressure tactic is that the work rate required to make it work is draining on the legs and the concentration. This compounded with playing a high back line makes the defence extremely vulnerable in later stages of a game, hence the sad amount of times we capitulate to teams of lesser quality.

BR appears to be a good man manager but as long as he sticks to this one attack approach we will never achieve anything. {Ed052's Note - Mate, at the begining of the year, we defended well, and couldn't score, and thats now flipped. We need a CB, and Skrtel playing poorly is not Rodgers fault. And our defence actually isn't as bad as you say. You also have to remember the number of injuries we have had defensively over the season: Lucas, Flanno, Kelly, Enrique. Johnson, Wisdom, Carra, Skrtel and Agger have all picked up knocks too. Moreover, no one is defending well this season, no team at all. Therefore, it is not just our problem, and it is not all Rodgers fault. And since 08-09, our defence has been very poor, so saying Rodgers has destroyed our defence is just none - logical.

But, you don't seem to have anything positive to say, so perhaps dont say anything at all then?}

So what you really are saying ED is your happy to bury your head in the sand and ignore everything negative about the way the team is playing. because at some stage in the future you are reassured that things will get better. Good for you, the temazepam still seems to be working for you.
This rainbow and unicorn filled Anfield existence you have where nothing is wrong is very enlightening, when you want to come out of this denial stage give us a call. I imagine it will be during the summer of 2014 when FSG are fed up with the consecutive 8th position finishes and lack of improvement.

You keep believing sunshine! {Ed052's Note - What are you going on about. Please, explain all these so called negatives..}

02 Feb 2013 12:06:48

Personally think it went quite well!

31 Jan 2013 12:51:27
A quick qestion for the Eds - What do you think the positions we need to strengthen to make us into a Top 4 team?

Thanks Jim {Ed052's Note - Goalkeeper, and at CB. We are very very close thought to top 4. We have the team, and we have the squad. Maybe just one more, or two more as I say, and we can make huge jumps}

Agree with Edo52; Spot on it's about players.
Were not 2, 3, 4 seasons behind the top sides were 2, 3, 4 at the very most players behind.
Couple of spot on signings in the Summer and we'll be right up there.

kidmillions {Ed052's Note - I actually think we could skip out the conundrum of 4th all together, and jump from say, 6th this season, to 3rd next year, and comfortably getting top 4.}

I think the Eds a little optimistic. We have put together a good, solid team that as you've said before are thumping lower opposition and play attractive football. New GK, CB are desperately needed for the first team. Then potentially a playmaker (depending on how Coutinho settles in), a midfield destroyer, one more forward (depending again on what coutinho offers in foward positions and assaidi who the jurys still out on, and whether Downing goes in the summer) and a back up left back are needed for the squad, if we get all of these in the summer and settle in quickly and all add something, 3rd place is potentially realistic depending on what chelsea do (they'll probably add another top striker to replace departing Torres). However if we have a relatively successful window with CB, GK and one or two decent squad players then 4th place will be possible but difficult, again depending on what other teams around us do.

Brendan has got us playing good football, and installed belief in the players. We're not far off 4th, and hopefully with the right players will achieve it next year, but I wouldn't be altogether that surprised if it took us another season.

02 Feb 2013 11:10:38
you have to give it to gold and sullivan at west ham. I mean AC hasn't exactly covered himself in glory since moving there yet they have decided now is the time to negotiate a transfer fee with Liverpool for him. its not like Liverpool are exactly in a good bargaining position are they. I reckon West Ham United offer is sub 10mil. but heres the problem they have still to agree it with AC, I have already mentioned the timing, this also applies to AC, I mean he can hardly demonstrate to sullivan and gold that he's worth the same money if he signs for them at the end of the season as he's on now can he?. yeah you have to give it to the cockney boys cause they know how to put someone over a barrel and fu$k them

It was my understanding that it is a loan-to-buy deal with the price already agreed at 17mill so I'm not really sure what you're talking about with a "sub 10mill" deal.

Dan.

The fee was agreed when he moved - what is your point?

Hello Ed002,
after the summer and winter transfer windows, all ins and outs, how do you assess BR and club`s transfer policy? Is it going in the right direction as far as club`s finanses go, the development of the club? What`s your general view on all this? thanks. {Ed002's Note - I am not so sure that there is a "policy" as such. Finance wise the owners have invested further in order to achieve the goal of Champions League football - but it remains perhaps a goal too far for this season. The performances are reported as being good, there has been a further shuffling of players to suit the manager and perhaps he will still get some help from soeone coming in to assist on the footballing side. I think everything is in a reasonable shape and improving.}

02 Feb 2013 09:59:33
Independent featuring article on Andre Wisdom whilst Guardian carrying one on Jordan Henderson. nice to see both players have the right mental attitude and strength to want to make it at the highest level

02 Feb 2013 11:24:37
We've been spoilt in Centre Mid with the likes of Stevie, Xabi, Masch over the years. that's why we've been so critical of players bought to cover them roles, Lucas had to live up to it and now Jordan is starting to do the same. We have great potential with them and Jonjo, let's build them up rather than knock them down in comparison to their predecessors.

It's a shame the story about Stering puts a dampener on the positives

02 Feb 2013 09:22:00
Just seen Hendo says he won't let criticism spoil his career at Liverpool, he is determined to make it. Good lad, that's the fighting spirit we want to see. Good luck and hope you do.

02 Feb 2013 09:08:04
I think Dzeko is currently the most underrated player in BPL. Guy has fantastic attitude. never moans while warming the bench( more frustrating when d**ks like Balotelli are given nod ahead). whenever he gets the opportunity, plays his socks off. Nice touch on ball, great header, great shooting capacity. nice team player.

I mean he has all the right attributes to be world class player if played week in week out but he has been under used and probably wasting his peak time sitting on Man City bench.

Under ideal circumstances. given a choice, I will choose Dzeko over Higuain/Cavani etc.

Opinions?. Just a healthy banter!

Indian with Red Heart

Give him time, he's already started to sulk, the other week, he was not celebrating a goal.
Do agree he's too good to warm the bench.
On another note which has a relevance to us and our players. He was awful when he first arrived and the City fans thought he was a complete waste of money.

mmm is it just me who didn't listen to mancini's interview properly? I could have swore he said luis played for Liverpool, was skilful, strong, great player etc. I didn't hear him say he wanted him at city in the summer but as usual the gutter press have headlines stating otherwise. My god, how they are allowed to blatantly write such drivel is beyond me.
Fair play to Mario for putting 1 member of the english press firmly in his place at his press conference. I wish more footballers, managers would take such a stand. Gossip is one thing but pure lies and fabrication is another.
Anyway here's to a gr8 match Sunday with a bagful of goals and 3pts for the reds, YNWA Simonpw

02 Feb 2013 08:35:48
Great interview/article in the Guardian on Jordan Henderson. Really pleased he's settled in and is showing his worth now. I don't deny that it's taken a while, but you must remember he was/is a very young man and despite all the money he earns and life he leads, like Lucas, Allen or any other past/present/future scapegoat, he's only human!

He didn't ask for the high tag, but he's starting to show that there is a reason we paid so much for him. He may not be a flashy player, but neither is Carrick or Milner and both regularly play in the champions league and EPL for the two top teams in England. Skills and tricks can get you a long way and certainly attract a lot of attention, but heart, will and desire make a player and make a man in my view. Some rare breeds have both, Suarez being the prime example, but often, that's lacking in flair players and I'd prefer someone like Kuyt, Jordan or Lucas anytime.

Everyone must be impressed by his stamina, work rate etc, but I see more than that too his game. He has wonderful technique, a good range of passing and ability to thread a wonderful through ball. He may not reach the very top class level in his career, but he's got all the fight and drive to give it a damn good go.

Papa G

Milner? Regular in the Champions League.

I'll give you that one Kidmillions, I got carried away.

New Liverpool signing Philippe Coutinho will not make his debut for the club this weekend against Manchester City, assistant manager Colin Pascoe has confirmed.

The Reds confirmed the transfer of the 20-year-old Brazilian earlier in the week, after agreeing a fee of £8.5 million with Inter Milan. The attacking midfielder has been gifted the number 10 shirt at Anfield, suggesting the club have big plans for the diminutive attacking midfielder, but Liverpool fans will have to wait a bit longer to see him in action.

"He's away at the moment, getting things sorted, " Pascoe told Liverpool's official website. "On Monday or Tuesday, he'll come here and we'll assess him then. "

Liverpool travel to the Premier League champions on Sunday afternoon looking to build on their 2-2 draw at the Emirates during on Wednesday night. Pascoe also confirmed that Jose Enrique was making good progress following his return against Arsenal and will be in contention to feature against Manchester City.

Massive game tomorrow. If we lose then that's that for champs league. What will fsg consider progress this season? 6th? Great first half at Aresnal but really worried what city will do to our disorganised defence. I'd take a draw right now.

Could get ugly. But fingers crossed.

He's been called almost every name under the sun in the press and from various managers up and down the country and even ex players have had a pop at him but there's no doubt in my eyes he's the best thing since sliced bread, take a bow Luis Suarez.

To come out and say the things he has over the last 24hrs about how much he loves the club the captain the life on Merseyside the fans the manager and his fellow red players and our beloved anthem just goes to show what a top top guy he is.

Love Suarez he's already a legend, and unlike a certain number 9 who jumped ship and chucked his toys out of his pram when things got tuff Suarez on the other hand says he's here for the long haul and he's determined to get Stevie G and us fellow reds that premiership trophy we all want.

Suarez your a legend.

Damn right + he's in the top 5 players in the world right now!

Two disagrees already?
Do you think it's possible we have a lot of rival fans coming on here disagreeing with all things Liverpool.
Spot on mate; Suarez makes me smile and enjoy football more than any other current player.

"West Ham have an agreement with Liverpool to sign him(Andy Carroll) at the end of the season, but we have no agreement with the player.

"It was his desire to come to West Ham to prove himself to Liverpool and that hasn't changed"

The Gospel, according to David Sullivan.

It seems a bit flimsy to me. If West Ham don't give the player a good deal, then he goes back to Anfield. Simples. . . . . .!

What do Liverpool do then?

Just thought I'd share some information that I received earlier today.

Arsenal will step up their efforts to sign Pepe Reina in the summer having identified a proven and experience goalkeeper alongside Szczeny as a must.

Arsene Wenger said today the club were close to making one more signing on deadline day which I believe was another Premier League goalkeeper - I suspect his name will come out in the coming days/weeks.

I'm not saying Pepe's going but there is definite interest from Arsenal, the Athletico link is there because his Dad played there, AM will have money when Falcao leaves in the summer, and they have a loan keeper who may difficult to retain in the face of growing interest from elsewhere - Barca, who I understand could make a move for De Gea if Fergie buys a goalkeeper. It's hard to say whether the Barca link to Pepe is just speculation or not.

Cheers - The Doctor46 {Ed002's Note - It was not REina that Arsenal failed to sign.}

Every football supporter can see reina "although still a good keeper" is not the force he used to be. so just explain to me why arsenal would be interested in him, considering their back up keeper, the young lad manone looks a very good keeper.

Evening Eds, just wondering if any of you knew who Liverpool themselves think is our brightest prospect in our academy? With the likes of Yesil, Ibe, Morgan, Sinclair just to name a few.

Was clearing my emails earlier and came across a very very old one. About 18 months ago I received an email from L. F. C. about joining a fans forum group in my local area, it was supposed to give the club fans feed back from differen't areas and to create a link between the club and the fans apparantly, I declined ( won't go into why, can't be arsed wi the aggro ) but just out of curiotisy did anyone else get a similar email and if you did, did you take them up on the offer? And is it still going or was it a load of bo**ocks?

To ed002 possibly, do you know if anything happened with the 'wage restraint' that the premier league club owners we suppose to have had a discussion about.
They were suppose to have met in November to find an agreement on wage cap and rules similar to financial fairplay within the premier league. Have you heard anything, have they agreed anything? I tried the search button, and google, could n't find anything apart from the plan to meet back then.

Roy {Ed002's Note - It is still a few years away right now.}
