We won't be signing Bertrand. Thank god

30 Jul 2014 22:41:30
Who do you think the club will push for now that Bertrand is out of the picture.

Obviously, the offer for Moreno is still on the table but LFC cannot be reliant on Sevilla changing their minds.

And do you see McLaughlin being loaned out to another Championship team this season, I was impressed with his albeit short stint against Uruguay and some of his games for Barnsley

Thanks

So Bertrand is in Southampton - why by the way? we weren't willing to pay enough money? Was this something we expected - that he would go elsewhere or is this a bad surprise for BR? What next on the LB front? Back to Moreno?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Southampton probably gave him assurances of game time?

So the Saints have secured Bertrand on a loan deal. Will be curious to see who, if anyone, we will go for now.
I'd personally like to still keep Enrique but also get someone in as I feel if he has strong competition he would prove a great asset. But obviously that depends on his listening ability and ability to play with the new look back-line

Who ever Liverpool sign certain people won't be happy football is a game of opinions and always will be.think bony would be a great signing if he were to get anywhere near the 25 goals he scored for Swansea last season would be a massive help to us that's for sure.

Believable14 Unbelievable1

Bony would be a good addition no doubt. I reckon we could really compete on all fronts if we got him and a LB.

Hello Ed, happy belated birthday for yesterday. Quick question, are Robinson and Coates "being put in the shop window" as the saying goes or being given a genuine chance to stake a place in the squad. Thanks, spoil yourself and have another piece of cake.

Just looking at all the banter regarding a Remy replacement and wanted to make a comment. when looking for a potential striker to pair with or rest Sturridge we should look at their goals from open play versus total goals. a lot of these guys, use Huntelaar as an example, score a lot of goals from PK's and they will not be getting those with Liverpool as long as Gerrard is around. the amazing thing about Sturridge and Suarez's goal haul last year was that they did it without significant, if any, PK goals. I know Bony had 17 goals last year in all competitions. how many did he have from penalty spot? Just a thought.

Lee

Believable1 Unbelievable1

Bony had 25 goals in 48 games in all comp last season. (Plus a 26th goal, header deflected off Skrtel's shoulder). 4 of his goals were penalty kicks.

Evening eds! hope you are keeping in good health.

I wish to know your opinion on
a) Dejan Lovern
b) Ryan Bertrand

for Dejan I wish to ask about his positional play, ability to hold the defence as unit and genreal attitude.

for bertrand I wish to specifically ask how you rate him, if he comes to Lfc.

Many thanks as always :-)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I rate Lovren very highly, he showed great positional sense, awareness and the ability to work with his team mate. He was vocal too, which is something that has been lacking in our backline. He could be rash and did struggle a little to get back to form after suffering an injury, but I think he will be a good signing to partner Sakho. Lovren is more of a ball playing centre half.
Bertrand I don't know how I rate him. He has been extremely inconsistent in the games I have seen. Looked good enough in some games, others, especially last season on loan at Villa, he looked truly awful. He has a good touch and is very comfortable on the ball, but his defending was poor.}

Thank God he`s gone to the Saints because I do not rate him at all. BTW, not sure if Maureen would sell to us as he might have seen us as a threat to them if Bertrand panned out for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed001,, I don't agree on much, but your bang on there mate. Lovren easily one of the best defenders in the Prem last season, over the moon with that one. Also I agree Bertrand is poor, there's better players out there and also not forgetting the young players we have, we have better fullbacks in the ranks ie Flanno

Ed's The Star are reporting we are supposedly battling with Soton to sign Marcos Rojo for £12m. Yes I know it's The Star and is likely a non story but I know you've mentioned we've been interested in him previously and he would fit a need. He looks like just the kind of fullback Rogers prefers i.e. quick, athletic, attacking. Are we looking at him as a Plan B option to Moreno? I would certainly take him over Betrand.

cheers

I'm not massively keen on bony to be honest.

I think he is a decent player but not versatile enough. People say he can play in the hole too but we aren't light on options there and it isn't like he will be interchanging with couts/lallana during the game.

If our primary targets aren't available I'd rather we just hold off

I haven't posted for a while since moving to the US but I am an avid reader on this great site. I see the possible signing of Bony is creating mixed feelings. I think he would be a great capture as he is yet another versatile player who can interchange with our attackers. Not to mention his powerful presence, clever brain and burst of speed. Personally, I think Bony was ahead of Remy all along but the price initially put Liverpool off, plus one or two other transfers didn't materialise. However, the Swansea Chairman appears to be warming up to the idea of selling him. If we get our man, Liverpool will have a talented, interchangeable attack force which will run, havoc, score plenty of goals and no longer be reliant on the flawed genius that was Suarez.
PS. looking forward to going to the match on Saturday in Charlotte. YNWA

Believable7 Unbelievable2

I'm also going to the game! I hope we give a good account of ourselves, win or lose, but obviously expecting a win! I don't doubt for one minute the players won't be taking it serious.

Bony would be an excellent signing for us. 30 games, 15 goals. 24 million pounds. Now, if he exceeds that expectation, we're looking at a player with all the attributes to succeed at the highest level. He still needs to develop a bit, but I think his performance at the World Cup (and for Swansea) show he's a Champions League player.

For the last time people stop this obsession with a marquee signing/replacement for suarez
suppose we had signed some big name hotshot we would not have the money to make all these valuable additions to our squad
would you all really want aspas and Alberto as our game changing subs?
now we have the likes of can Lambert and coutinho/markovic coming off the bench
one player doesn't win you the league a strong squad does
look at city lost toure and Silva near the end still pulled through
besides a "marquee signing " (I really have come to hate this term)
Would have disturbed the balance of the squad with his high wages and hotshot attitude
and just please stop adding random figures of the press (eg suarez 80 million £, 60 million £ transfer budget etc) and claim that we have lots of money left neither was the suarez transfer fee paid upfront nor all the incoming transfers only about the fee
everybody somehow seems to forget signing on fee, agent fees, vat etc
and stop with this reus obsession everyone's acting like that despo nerd from college he won't be moving to Liverpool we do not have any interest we can't afford him and if he moves it will be to barca most probably
stop filling this site up with rubbish you get from twitter this site is meant for banter not asking the eds anything and everything

I think Bony will be a great signing for us. he will score loads of goals for our team like he did in a struggling swansea team. with the amount of chances Liverpool create, he is exactly what we need. A brilliant finisher but he is much more than that. He can head as good as anyone, he can play on his own, he is a clever passer of the ball, excellent movement, very strong, can hold up the ball and can defend too. he has more to his game than people think. he is different to the player we sold to barca. I think he will thrive in Liverpool system.

Believable12 Unbelievable1

My only worry about Bony, that his a type of player that requires service from the Midfield. Some of his goals are headers and we are not notoriously known to be efficient in crossing the balls into the penality box.

Agree5 Disagree0

30 Jul 2014 21:51:10
Not good enough. I don't see how he is much different to Lambert. Both strong, good with their feet and can score. Only difference is Lambert is a lot cheaper. A different style of player is needed.

Agree2 Disagree1

SAS96, Not efficient at crossing it or not efficient at converting from them? we get plenty of corners and free kicks yet skrtl seemed to be the only one capable of converting them! most of the dead balls gerrard takes.

Agree1 Disagree0

Yes it's more like not converting them. last season we didn't cross the ball more often. but if we sign bony he will definitely give us different option. people say he is like lambert but he is not.

30 Jul 2014 16:48:11
I'm going to be brutally honest: I don't want Wilfried Bony anywhere near the club.
Before the window I would have been very content with the idea of him signing, but we've lost the best player in the world and are yet to use any of his or our funds to sign anyone with any experience at the very highest level.
Bony's had one good season in an actually top league, in a team that was built around him.
Although some might argue Suarez hadn't had any experience in a top league when we bought him, he had proven himself in the World Cup.
Bony scored one good goal and then went missing in the rest of a poor Ivory Coast team's games.
I'm made up with the signing of Lallana, think he's a great player, but undoubtedly a risk as he's had just two seasons in which he's stood out.
Lambert for such a minimal fee was a good capture but he's not going to set the world alight, realistically.
Markovic looks talented but he too is unproven and Origi isn't even playing at the club for a year.

I'm never normally so pessimistic and will stick by Rodgers and the club whatever happens, but all our purchases so far have been very risky and I really believe we need a hugely talented attacker with high-level experience and who hasn't built his career in a team built around them to even attempt to replace what Suarez brought to the team.

Reus would be brilliant, but it doesn't seem likely at the moment. I hate to call it unrealistic because we are one of the five biggest clubs in the world, have finances readily available and aren't lacking Champions League football. Plus Real and Barca both seem to have made all the attacking improvements they want/can already this window.

The fact is I don't think our first team is what it was last season, and won't be much closer with Bony.

Believable4 Unbelievable13

Nothing risky about the proven premier league players we have bought/being linked with.
The only risky signing I think is Origi. Because his stats -to me- don't justify his price.
Marcovic will be a brilliant player once he is settled.
Pipe down. Sheesh.
I am almost thought this was ironic.

Agree3 Disagree3

What players are proven class in premier league that you would like? Lalanna only has two seasons experience apparently and while you like him you're still not sure?
Bony only one so he won't preform.
Reus etc who have none are guaranteed class. don't get me wrong I love Reus but I loved schevchenkho morientes and lamela to name a few. there are literally 10 players or less who we could almost guarantee to be complete successes but these are out of our price range and not for sale

Agree3 Disagree1

30 Jul 2014 17:58:31
Sorry I was thinking more going into Champions League football, no irony was intended!
Playing against Bayern, Barcelona, Real Madrid and so on will be a whole new experience for all the new lads.
Buying a player with a great deal of potential is always a.risk, however talented Markovic may be, because an injury or poor run of form could ruin their careers as soon as they've begun.
I'm a huge fan of Lallana, but he's not guaranteed to fire on all cylinders because he doesn't have experience for such a big club.
I'm not slating the signings, let me put that straight, but all our signings could be hit or miss so far as they have little experience at the top level.
Take Shaqiri, I'm not his biggest fan due to his, in my view undeserved, belief he is god in football boots. But he was part of a squad who won the Champions League and we lack that experience.

Agree0 Disagree2

Hold up there Toddy Roosevelt. :) I'm a big Bony fan, the lad is a genuine goal scorer. Like Suarez, admittedly without as much of the on the edge of your seat action. But let's be honest, there are not many players of Suarez's class and ability about.

But, where i'm sold on Bony is that he is extremely productive and I feel that's what we must look for now. We need substance over style and productivity over pomp. Which is why i'd be a very happy camper with the signing of Bony to further compliment the very strong squad Rodgers and co have been building.

Particularly, I am very impressed with Bony's relentless goal scoring in comparison to the teams he's played for being not being the strongest. Bony scored 53 goals in 73 games for Vitesse. In 2012/13 Bony hit prolific form and went on to scored 37 goals in 36 games and 31 of them came in the Dutch League in just 30 Eredivisie games before leaving for Swansea.

Obviously, Bony went on to score 25 goals last season in 48 matches for the Swansea Jacks, 16 of those goals came in the Premier League from just 27 starts and 7 sub appearances. Which for any club is very respectable figures but made maybe even more so for the likes of Swansea, especially last season as Swansea finished the League on a zero goal difference!

But Bony scored near a third of their goals and that's the same sort of impact Suarez had for us, which is a very positive comparison as Suarez is one of the most productive players in the game and is a testament (at least in my opinion) of Bony being a powerhouse in front of goal, albeit without the flair of some others.

I think he's proved himself a bit of a beast over the last two season with his 37 goals in 2012/13 and his 25 goals in 2013/14. Just as a matter of further statistical reading, Bony has scored 62 goals in 84 matches over the last two seasons within two different Leagues (England and Dutch). Again back to Suarez for a guide, in that time for us (2 seasons) Luis played 81 games and scored 61 goals for us. Again, not a direct comparison in terms of player quality, again Suarez is far better individually but Bony scores and even next to Suarez, his stats are not to be sniffed at. He doesn't create as much as Suarez (again, who does?) but he did get 5 assists for Swansea.

Bony would be a very logical signing helping Liverpool get the much needed goals, in my opinion to help us secure another good season and cement another year in the Champions League and he's shown good form over a two season stretch and I believe he is hungry for the move and we are hungry for his goals. Given the chances we create in comparison to Swansea and the quality throughout our squad with the attacking nature of our tactics and ethos, I think Bony could genuinely become a goal glutton and would help ease some of the burden. Just my thoughts though.

Agree9 Disagree1

Not in the least bit bothered about sending our current squad up against Barcelona, Bayern, Real Madrid, etc.

They should be more worried about playing us.

Maybe you missed what the Dutch team did to the Barcelona and Real Spanish defenders at the WC?

Dortmund do perfectly fine when playing against these clubs. I expect us to be no different.

Agree2 Disagree0

31 Jul 2014 06:02:48
toddythered so you think bony cannot do well for us because he didn't have good world cup and don't have champions league experience? but you would be happy with shaqiri who also didn't have a good world cup. he may be in bayern team who won champions league 2 seasons ago but how often did he play in those champions league games? I think he was mostly on the bench. if you want Liverpool to sign champions league experienced players then you would be really happy if we signed let's say giorgios samaras from celtic as they play regularly in champions league. and he has played far more champions league game than shaqiri.

With Barcelona reportedly interested in Agger and Liverpool looking for 1 more forward/wide player I just think it would make so much sense for a Pedro, Agger part ex deal, I know they're rare and complicated but it would make so much sense and he would add a lot of quality to our ever improving squad, do you believe this to be feasible Eds?

Just a question to everyone .how likely do people think it is that reus will join if an acceptable bid is made? Or if people think its worth going for him?

Believable4 Unbelievable5

It depends who else is after him really. I wouldn't get your hopes up though. :P

Agree3 Disagree0

Definitely worth going for him, would fit into our style, would provide experience and would probably be the most realistic replacement for suarez (not quite like for like).

But we have repeatedly been told there is no interest from Liverpool sadly.

Agree5 Disagree0

30 Jul 2014 16:38:05
With Suarez gone we do need another world class winger in my opinion, Adam Lallana is not on his own sufficient, nor Markovic yet; although I have been very impressed with him in preseason thus far.

Reus would be my choice but it is highly unlikely to ever happen, I'm happy to trust the club with this because with Suarez gone + pending Borini & Agger leaving we effectively haven't spent anything if the fees are to be believed (£101mio) with still a few players to leave as well we should have the money to compete for a world class player should they become available & should we want to pursue them.

Agree0 Disagree3

Don't know about his preference but on making an acceptable bid on a scale of one to ten
I'd say minus 10

Agree2 Disagree1

Would be an ideal signing. If available, he'll have plenty of offers though so I don't imagine we'll be his most preferable destination.

That is provided we bid at all, the Ed's have stated there has been no interest from us.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2014 16:44:25
No chance.

I do hope people realize this. But for some reason, they chose not to.

Agree2 Disagree0

People keep harping on about Reus, I don't think its ever ever going to happen not to Liverpool.

Wouldn't surprise me if I woke up tomorrow and he had signed a new contract.

Agree2 Disagree0

Reus is the new ken aguero, or should I saw Mike Reus!

Agree2 Disagree0

Reus is not even better than Suarez`s left foot. The people who talk of Reus clearly have not seen him play. He`s a very good player in a very good system. That is it and nothing more. To me, he ain`t worth 30m and is defo not worthy enough to be Suarez`s replacement.

How do you think our squad now compares to last year
& how do you expect us to do in the league this year?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - on paper the squad is stronger, but I think it will be a top four finish again next season.}

Ed I agree we are pretty much stronger on paper. I didn't see lot of Swansea matches. Very few and some highlights here and there. He looks good and has that striker instinct in the penalty area. How do you rate him?. And also with him, Lambert and Origi, is BR trying to develop Plan B(What most call) if our way didn't work against teams like Chelsea and West Ham

Jaysus it's very quite on here on the Bony front even after Macca's comment. While I have been pushing Lacazette as our Remy alternative I would be happy with Bony. He would give us options, can play up front on his own with 3 behind him or (I believe) he'd work as a partner to Sturridge as well. Just hope our valuation comes close to Swansea's

Believable9 Unbelievable1

I too want Lacazette, but Bony is fantastic in the air for a guy that's only 6 ft. I think he played as a second striker at Vitesse as well. Versatile forward.

I can't imagine him coming cheaply though.

Agree4 Disagree1

We have zero players that can cross a ball during game play(well enrique is one), but "he's good in the air" attribute doesn't really mean anything to us with the way that we play. He can hold the ball up and play in tight spaces though and is tidy in front of goal, but, if we do sign him we will definitely not be as dynamic upfront as we were last season.

Agree1 Disagree3

Haych? what about corners and free kicks? they're crosses aren't they? I'd suggest we win more of both of those than most teams yet our track record scoring from them isn't great( other than direct shots) Bony will be a threat from them, is also a threat on the ground and can defend corners / free kicks ( something we weren't very good at either!)

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2014 12:17:45
I don't know if it's just me, but I think if enrique regains his form as to when he just joined, then we don't need to sign a new left back. Plenty of youngsters to cover him.

Believable8 Unbelievable7

That's what i've been saying the raging bull has everything speed, strength & technique. Even though he does the same work GJ does going forward his ball recoveries are so important, plus he is comfortable on the ball and will get assists.

Agree2 Disagree2

Enrique just doesn't listen. I'm sure Carragher mentioned it not long back. He's one of those guys you can't teach new tricks to. He will never change. One of the most infuriating players we have as he has every attribute required. apart from the brain it seems.

And I don't buy into this "we have youngsters who can cover". It's not just about cover, it's about quality. I'd love to see our young lads get the opportunities but they have to have the quality required. We're talking about the top end of the premier league and a side looking to compete in the CL. It's an absolute necessity that in both competitions quality in every position is on the field. I see a number of posts whereby people talk about our youngsters as if they'll "do a job" - put Kelly centreback, throw Flanno right back, Brad Smith left back, let's try Robinson, put Jack Dunn up top. When? When do you play these lads? I'm all for nurturing our youth through, but it's a timely process and has to be done right. Making an assumption that they can "do a job" at the very top level of football could be the difference between 3 and 0 points.

Agree3 Disagree0

I think Enrique always has a mistake in him and can get caught positionally speaking. Good squad man, but if we have the cash to go and get someone better, why not?!.

Agree1 Disagree1

On his day he is unbeatable, but his good days are too few and far between. Loses concentration and destabilises the whole defence. That's why he's getting sold.

Agree5 Disagree1

He is everything you all say he is unless he is closed down quickly. Too often he panics and stops dead, gives an opponent a chance to get close and then the lack of any ability with his right foot means he turns a tight circle outwards to the left towards the touchline then back, and looks for help from a CB or keeper. This is easily cut off by an alert forward and so often he gets caught like this its silly.

I'm not a scout but if I can see this many managers have picked up on it and you see it happening more and more.

He will play some good forward passes. Get forward into their defensive third and also make some heroic tackles charging back but. He will make mistakes that cost us goals much like Skrtl has when pressed quickly

Agree0 Disagree0

He was awful against City today. Absolutely awful!

Hi ed001 or EMS if you're around, what do you think of our supposed pursuit of Bony? Personally I'd be disapointed. He's not that good neither does he offer anything different to the team.

Believable1 Unbelievable9

Bony and Sturridge can be what Drogba and Anelka were for Chelsea. I see them working very well together with Sterling in behind in a Diamond formation. I think a lot of people are underestimating Bony. He is in the top 10 players in the world for gosls per game over the last two seasons. In his first season in Englush football he finished with 25 goals in all competitions; absolutely trouncing Suarez's 17 in his first season.

Bony isn't my first choice, but he is a very good choice. Just my opinion though mate and you're entitled to your own.

Agree8 Disagree0

He's not that good? The guy is class mate, 25 goals for a relagation battling team. He scored against all the big teams last year to. Him and sturr up front would bully teams.

Agree8 Disagree1

In what way is he not that good?

He scored 25 goals in all competitions last season, for a struggling team, who were in a relegation battle, and lost their manager half way through the campaign, all in his first season in English football.

He is quick, strong, a great finisher, and powerful in the air.

I think he is a fantastic player, the only thing I don't know is what he is like as a person.
The last thing we need is somebody to come in and disrupt the team spirit Rogers has built in the squad.
If he fits that bill then I think he would be great for us.

Agree5 Disagree0

Bony is a very good striker who is underated in ability and versatility.

He is considered a big powerhouse n9 by a lot of people but this is not true!

when at vitesse he played as a number 10 very effectively out wide not as effective and as a number 9 and got something like 30 in 31 games; not bad at all! He scored a lot of long rage efforts tap ins clinical finishes and headers. goals from everywhere really! He is not as tall as people think only like 5 foot 11 or there abouts but is good and powerful in the air however another misconception is that he needs crosses when very few of his headers came from open play more of them were from set pieces where he is also very good defensively!

I urge you to watch his goal against United last season where he finished off a good move very clinically and tell me we don't play like that or he wouldn't fit our system!

Finally while not the pacyest he is very powerfulrunner similar to can. tthink that's nearly everything but if you're curious on more let me know I'm a big fan of this player

I would assume you have never watched him play then.

Rumour mill is going bonkers!

M. reus: obviously this would be fantastic, but history shows Dortmund stars only salivate for Bayern. I am confident his refusal to sign new contract will ultimately lead to deal with Bayern.

E. lavezzi: while I love his tattoos, he seems to be all about speed with no end product. Ibe is already better

w. Bony: have a feeling he will be our signing. I also suspect BR will know how to get the best/beast out of him.

Shaquiri: personally I think he will leave Bayern, with Reus coming in. Suspect he will go to athletico or Iraly though. Sad, as he would bring attacking from wings and be great support up front.

Just a few thoughts.

Coop

Believable5 Unbelievable6

Ibe is already better than Lavezzi? Come on man.

Agree5 Disagree1

Lavezzi would be an incredible signing. If only we could have got him a few years ago.

Cavani may have got the plaudits but every time I saw that Napoli front line of Lavezzi Cavani and Hamsik he was outstanding. His runs, control, pace, trickery, vision are all up there with the very top players. As a replacement for someone that runs at defenders with the ball at his feet causing havoc there are very few options we could realistically bring to the club I could think of as a better fit.

Mate, Jordan Ibe may well be a star in the making but Lavezzi would walk into our starting line up and have a huge impact and has CL experience with 2 major European clubs

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Jul 2014 11:22:55
Wouldnt be the.happiest with bony, quailty finisher but isn't the most mobile for our system. I wouldn't want.him in the starting 11 ahead.of sterling, coutinho etc and then.would a player likely to.cost 24 million sit on the bench? Again why not save the money for January if ibe, Peterson or borini don't do enough when given the chance.
With bony will we win the title? No.imo, without him we will still have a strong season. Invest in a top LB and buy a top drawer forward good enough for.our starting 11 next season. Toomany players are coming into a.group that did very well. Did we need more depth? Yes but we should only buy now if it improves our first 11. If bony comes I will support as always but i'd rather give the kids a.chance.

Believable6 Unbelievable9

30 Jul 2014 14:26:07
I will agree. Rather than Bony, I rather we just concentrate on getting a LB and pick up a striker in January if possible.

Agree6 Disagree4

Bony is 5ft11. The same height as Suarez. He is faster than Suarez was, very strong and athletic, and has a wicked shot. He is very good at linking up play or holding up the ball. He is not a route one player. Otherwise he wouldn't have cane through the Dutch System. He rarely ever scoree headers from open play. It's not his game. His power just makes him a good weapon from set pieces.

He could comfortably play alongside Sturridge or just behind him. He might not be as technically good as Luis was, but he has many other strings to his bow. He scored more goals in his first season in England than Suarez did and in my opinion, he'd be a good buy and a strong indication that Rodgers still wants to play the diamond with two strikers up top.

Agree4 Disagree1

Proven goal scorer, very strong, great shot, excellent in the air, technical and got his fair share of assists. He would be an excellent addition to our foward line. Young too with remove for improvement. If we don't get another striker in then I'm sure we can cope but in my opinion this will add a very good dimension to a very good forward line.

I'm really liking the way the team is looking now! Lovren coming in is a big boost, great defender, organiser and leader, and is comfortable on the ball too.

As regards the full back positions I think we need maybe one more full back. I personally would prefer Flanno to start ahead of Johnson, Glen's confidence (agility and maybe fitness too) seems to be gone out the window in the past few seasons. I personally think we need another winger and striker.

Bony's name has been thrown around and Macca seems to think those rumours are true. Big fan of Bony myself! Strong, fast, clever, proven goalscoring record and in my opinion he could be a gem for us! A tricky winger would be the final piece to the puzzle in my opinion, Ibe has great potential but in the short term I think we need a proven winger.

Hopefully we don't suffer from too much change, Brendan is looking for specific players to fit in with the system so hopefully that can be the big difference between us and Spurs last season.
Cheers

Believable2 Unbelievable0

I didn't see too much of Bony last season but just looked up some of his highlights (yes, I know they are just his highlights) and was surprised at how technical and clever some of his flicks and passes are. Certainly looks like he has a lot more to his game than just being a tough and aggressive forward.

Agree1 Disagree0

Agreed mate, most people don't seem to think another winger is necessary but I am on the same page as you on this one. Sterling, Markovic, Suso & Ibe (provided none are loaned or sold) essentially are our main wingers this season, aged: 19, 20, 20 & 18 respectively. All of whom in my opinion could really benefit from a slightly more experienced player closer to their peak to learn from and also to add a little more experience in the final third. This is why I think a Lavezzi type player could be hugely useful, being 29 he only has a few years at his peak ahead of him, by which time all 4 of our current options will be at a much higher level ability wise. Yes I am well aware of there not being unlimited funds but I do believe one acquisition in this area could really make the difference in the next few seasons.

He is not a striker so he cannot deputize for Sturridge. He is neither fast nor strong. he has good acceleration however.

He has been trying to get a move out of Shaktar for a long time but no one thinks it worth spending money on him and that should be an indication of the player.

He is a decent player, but we are well stocked in the position he plays with Coutinho, Lallana, Sterling, Suso, Ibe, Markovic, etc.

Hi eds,

Quick question re Flanagan. With the club looking for a new rb and lb before the end of the window, and assuming they're successful, will Flanagan end up on the bench next season? His run in the team at the end of last season was awesome. And ok he's not the finished article yet as some reds are suggesting but the only way he will be is by being given more sustained playing time. (maybe this time at his preferred rb). I also have a bet with my manc mate that he will play more games for England than luke shaw haha.
Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have no feeling for what BR intends to do with some of the youngsters.}

For me, that spot is Flanno's for next season. We're trying to sell Johnson; Wisdom and McLaughlin will be loaned out; Randall is too young; Manquillo will simply be a back up option. The only way Flanno will lose his spot is if Kelly hits the form he showed in 2011/12. If that happens, Flanno will lose his place because imo Kelly was the best right back in the league for those 15-20 games he played that year. Sadly, injuries have held him back and Rodgers may simply use him as a versatility player next year due to his ability to play comfortably across the entire back 4 better than any other defender I've seen.

I'm not even bothered if we don't sign a full backs at all. We have Flanagan, Kelly, Smith and Robinson even if we sell both Enrique and Johnson and don't replace them. Kely and Smith are not exactly shabby options and if Smith isn't ready, Flanno can play left back anyway. I don't think we are that desperately in need for fullbacks as others seem to think. Manquillo and Bertrand/A.Sandro are luxuries. Obviously I'd prefer it if we signed them, but I'm not going to lose sleep if we don't. We nearly won the league and went on an 11 game win streak with Flanno and Johnson as full backs. Kelly and Flanno is already an improvement though to be honest.

Agree4 Disagree0

Johnson has always been first choice under brendan and will still be this season.you are dreaming if you think flanno will start ahead of glen next season

Hi to all the EDS and fellow REDS

Last year we had a small squad but 'scary' first team. A lovely mixture of superb finishing, pace, nous and experience all rolled into a first eleven.

I do expect us to sign at least one 'scary' player. Not marquee, but scary. A player to put the fear in our opponents. hard to find but I think there are players out there and with CL and PL challenges to come, we need to stronger.

Big season for Ibe, expect him to have a huge impact! Lazar is going to be the man, among many!

Hey eds, two questions:
1. just to confirm, the most plausible options for a forward are either bringing Origi this year, or turning towards a previous target (Lacazette and Huntelaar as mentioned by Ed002) - if possible, could ed01 check why we didn't follow up our interest in Lacazette and instead chose Remy?
2. If one of the above happens, does this mean the end of the line for Borini, or is there an option for him to remain in the club? I kind of like him as a player, even though I am severely disappointed by his ball control from time to time.

Have a nice day!

Hi Ed's there is a talk of comparing LFC with Athletico Madrid.

Do you think that experience/age will play a key in deciding the top 4 this season.

Except for Gerrard/Skertel/Agger/Johnson the rest of the squad is bit inexperience.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it always plays a role. Even the Man Utd team that is held up so ridiculously as winning with kids was a spine, an experienced core of older players with a few young kids around them. I mean Schmeichel, Bruce, Pallister and Irwin were no spring chickens!}

30 Jul 2014 09:13:16
Ed001, after Robbo has impressed in these first few pre season games do you realistically see a chance of him staying and getting games next year. I thought he looked average last year and was under the impression he had attitude problems. However he seems to be knuckling down this pre-season and surrounded by better players he is really kicking on. I'm pleasantly suprised but I'm not going to go overboard as they're just friendlies! I personally think it could be good to have Robbo and Smith fighting it out for the left back role. It might bring out the best in both of them as they each strive to become a first team regular. Only if Robbo has moved past his attitude problems though! Just interested to know if you know of any plans to give him a chance and if perhaps that is why we've held back on a left back signing.

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - all the players were told they had a chance to prove themselves in preseason. Robinson, like Coady, has been told that the club won't stand in their way if a reasonable offer comes in, but it will be up to them to decide what they feel is the best move for their career. They have received no promises of playing time, just told that if they impress they will get a chance, it is all up to them.}

ive posted on here about jack robbinson when he played under kenny he got greate reviews nd was raved about flanno was playing at right back since then both got injured, but last season flanno got his lucky break and was given a run of games where he just got better and better, i'm trying to say this robbo was being touted as a star for the future and the pundits was saying he was better than flanno because of the comparissons, so I think if robbo got a run of games he would come on in keaps and bounds, and maybe we won't have to buy a left back, I think we should give him a decent chance, or give him and borini a good run of games to see if they can cut it and if they don't then in january replace them or loan them out because I really think robbo would remind us all of how well he plays when given the nod by the manager, can anyone else remember him under kenny and the way he was getting praised

Believable4 Unbelievable6

If flano can do it so can he. He is a Better LB than Flano due to it being his natural position. If he can learn to put himself about like Flano has done then he will be worth keeping because his contribution to the squad would be worth more than the money we'd get for him, same goes for Coates and Suso. But if we do not keep him then we should give Brad Smith every chance to make it.

Agree2 Disagree6

30 Jul 2014 07:54:21
He has had a run of games. In fact he had an entire season of games against easier opponents. He wasn't impressive

Agree4 Disagree0

He doesn't listen, is rash, loses his man far too easily, the list goes on.He won't EVER make it.

Agree5 Disagree1

I wouldn't compare his situation to Borini. Borini is clearly premiership standard. Robinson struggled for Blackpool in the championship on loan so I don't see how that's similar to Borini doing very well for Sunderland in the premier league.

We can't just give players games because they were highly rated 2-3 years ago. He hasn't lived up to his potential, not everybody does.

I'd rather let Flanagan keep the LB spot and have Enrique and Smith backup.

Agree4 Disagree2

30 Jul 2014 11:08:21
Most players play better in a better team, playing for a struggling team in a league completely different to the premier league is not going to show his strengths, options on the ball are more limited whereas if you've got Gerrard commanding the ball from you then there's always that easy option. Robinson showed promise a few years ago and has so far performed in the friendlies so why does he not deserve his shot if he's willing to work for it?

Hi eds, more of a question than a rumour, . Do u know have Liverpool ever shown any interest in Lucas of PSG? And is he likely to be on the move this summer?

As there is not enough rumours on here, I will add one to the mill, this is all honest but I prefer not saying anything incase I'm wrong:
As a football coach, I have built links with many youth scouts at academies (who, of course, know nothing of interest) however one in particular is very close to Liverpool's head scout and is in constant dialogue with him. As a result of this my friend (the youth scout) often has snippets of information- mainly on who is currently been watched and occasionally a bit more. I was speaking to him about the current rumours and he said he had been told that we have watched both Reus and Lavezzi quite seriously recently and that the head scout had reported he believed Lavezzi to be an ideal signing for Liverpool, affordable and style of play. I am led to believe this has been taken seriously and we are currently planning to make an offer- expect negotiations to begin within the next few days.
also as reported Agger will go. I do like the fella but if he is to be 4th choice centre-back next season it is worth cashing in on him, as it'd go at least half way to the cost of the Lovren deal and Lovren is a far better fit into our side.
ps I think the Agger fee will be around the £15mil mark (sorry eds)
Thanks

A joke of a post. I'd have 'dodgy'd' it. Can I be Ed 'add a number'?

This says you have connection inside Liverpool, and that person is nearer to the tea lady when it comes to insider info rather than the manager or board. If there's any truth to this then this person should really reconsider whatever trust he/she has in you, having said that, though the more likely thing here is that someone is pulling your legs via some dodgy stings.

So, yer man said we've watched Reus recently? Was this while he was getting physio treatment or while he was playing FIFA with his torn ankle ligaments resting up?

Got to say I've kept an eye on your posts, ChiefScout, and you seem to have a real insight into what's happening at the club. Do you have any clues as to who we might look at towards the end of the season?

Usually I try to stick to transfer news, but I've got a question for the Eds. Regarding Origi's loan, do we pay a portion of his wages for the duration of his stay at Lille? Just wondering, as I sit here reading some of the details of his switch.

Bertrand is the only one mentioned which seems remotely likely to me.

Why is it Reus OR Vidal? Surely we can afford both or have we spent the Spearing cash already?
