Anyone know if sturridge would want the number 9 shirt if aspas goes or could we see Lambert in it. just a thought.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Good Question - Pride at the number 9 or stick with 15 as he is superstitious.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sturridge's 15 has been very good to him, so it would be up to him. if he doesn't want to change i'd give it to Borini to symbolise a fresh start, just take away the 20.

Eds. I don't wanna be biased, But Y is Welbeck picked over any other winger?. Is it because UTD?
I don't see a single reason for this move.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - Of course it is, the English team is always picked with a heavy Utd bias, I always wondered why they never picked Vidic.}

30 May 2014 21:55:10
Come on Harry, for goodness sake.

He is obviously well thought of by RH.

Its sounds bias, but I genuinly think sterling is no 1 and he wants to chose between wellbeck and lallana as the other side!

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 22:39:09
That was clearly 'his chance'
I wouldn't even take him on that showing
Shame he has named the final 23 already

Agree0 Disagree0

I didn't watch the game, but when I checked the score centre on Sly, I saw Welbeck started ahead of Raheem Sterling and I nearly vomited.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Watching Sly Spurts will do that to you.}

No need for sarcasm Eds. Exactly what did Wellbeck do to deserve to go to Brazil this season. How many League Goals did he score? How many assists? How many times did he get Man of the Match? Or save Utd this season, if u can name one memorable moment he provided off the top of your head (in next 5 minutes). I shall be hugely impressed!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - To be honest with you I don't rate Welbeck and I even say so on the Utd page. Fans in general are very protective of players who come through their club's system, no matter how rank they are.}

Come on. Woy Hodgson and a "wide target man" with a decent turn of pace. Sounds like all his Christmases came early

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can imagine that our manager consults some of his players with regards to potential signings.

Considering the experience of some of our England players, I suspect many are of a good judge of character not only on an international scale, but that of some of the talented and exciting players they have played alongside.

I'm sure Stevie has had some sort of an influence in the managers decision and I suspect the manager has faith in Stevie's judgement.

Bring on Lambert and Lallana.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I can imagine him asking what their attitude is like; how do they train; do they want to improve etc.

Not sure if he will ask if he should buy them.

Lambert will be our first signing for 4 million
he will be followed with Peter Cech and hopefully Yaya Toure. (educated guesses)

Yaya is anger because they didn't respect him on his birthday at man city, while Liverpool made Kolo Toure birthday very special by sending flowers to his home. which Kolo mocked Yaya about and advised him that our club treats the players with respect. This is why it has upset Yaya and his agent stated that if he was at Liverpool and they won the league they would of treated Yaya like a 'GOD'.

Cech has been put on the transfer list and it would be stupid of us not to proceed with this as Mourinho and rodger are friends and would sell him to us for cheap.

these are both educated guesses, that I believe can and will happen

I've got to say I feel really sorry for Aspas. I know that when he played, he didn't exactly set the world alight, but he was given few chances, and I think he has some ability. Having said that, I think Rickie Lambert is a shrewd signing and looks much better than Aspas.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yeah me to. He must have not impressed during training either because he didn't get a look in near the end of the season. Good luck to him, he's a good player that will do well back in Spain.

Agree0 Disagree0

BigRedF, see what your saying but you don't get the time in football anymore, managers only get 6 months so players have proberbly 3 months to prove there selfs that modern day football I'm affraid mate

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes but he played like he was an 18 year old. Was too weak, too slow and just didn't have the speed of thought or creativity to compensate for it.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 May 2014 01:10:13
Did you seriously think he was going to be any good? Mind you Some on here suggested Aspas was going to replace Suarez. Good luck to him, always seen him jumping up and down when we scored,, but sadly he wasnt ever going to push the main 2 for a place in the team. Just isn't good enough

Agree0 Disagree0

Aspas is not strong enough, does not have the physique, the stamina or mind set for Premier League. Yeah if you leave him with a ball on his own, he can maybe look awesome. But this is Premier League and like Fernando Morientes, he is quite simply not suited to the English game.

Just an idea like but instead of berating a man who is going to represent this great club before he's kicked a ball how about shoving your full support behind him and his boyhood dream in the hope he not only scores a few for LFC but fulfils a dream and gets one in the world cup as a LFC player, I despair at some of you lot, so he dosnt fit the youth policy, Is this the same youth policy that so many of you complained about last year till we were top of the league then moaned about yet again when we didn't quite get over the line at the end?
Nothing will ever please some of you, who do you suggest is going to sit on the bench behind Suarez and Sturridge?, Borini? or perhaps a big name that we can't afford who will divide the dressing room within 6 months when he's not playing?, most of you didn't think 4th was a certainty last season yet were happy when we were challenging, how about have some faith in the management the same management who you were singing about in the last 6 games and how about get behind a lad whose come from bottom to top and come good

"We are Liverpool and we deserve the best"

This is a quote that I've seen touted around on lots of media sites. Although I somewhat(with red tinted glasses) agree with the quote, I also look back and the 70's and 80's and I see us buying which big names? Very few big names joined us, we searched the lower leagues for the talent and made big names.

Ian Rush came from the 3rd division(Chester City)
Ronnie Whelan came from the Irish League
Phil Neal came from the 4th division(Northampton)

you get the point, right?

Agree0 Disagree0

There are a couple of posts on the site that echo the sentiments of this one from 'The Guv'.

These 'uberfans' seemingly revel in turning up on sites like these and declaring their unwavering support for anyone/thing discussed that relates to the club. Portraying themselves as the image of LFC purity, they seem on a crusade against their own reactionary and paranoid nature.

The vast majority of posts here show support for Lambert, yet uberfans simply see what they want to see.

They see an opportunity to show how great they are as fans. They'll support anything. No matter what.

It's an act that has grown old imo.

Why shouldn't some posters have a different view regarding signings? Should they all act like conformist sheep, here to subscribe to some stupid idealistic concept of what 'real' fans do?

If that was the case, then why don't we just prepare some generic 'I support everything' and 'top player-great signing' type posts and just not bother thinking any more.

I come here to read opinions, and discuss the views of fellow fans, and if someone thinks a player could be a poor signing, then I'd like to hear their views on the subject. It doesn't make them bad fans, perhaps their views will prove valid.

I don't want us wasting money on crap players, and yes - believe it or not, there are crap players out there, and we have wasted money on them in the past.

Not so long ago, the club was almost financially ruined. Partially because of our signing overpaid dross who saw us fall out of European competition and unable to pay the bills due to loss of revenues.

If an unprofessional tosser who doesn't give a crap about LFC and is as lazy as rubbish is at the club, he won't get my 'support' either. I'd want him out the feckin door, and I hope it hits him on the ass on the way out too. Proper order.

Shankly would kick their arse out the door too, because he was not an person.

Finally. I myself have not 'dissed' Lambert, but if people want to, I want to hear their thoughts on why they think he's not the right option.

Liverpool fans once had a reputation for being intelligent. Not for being mindless drones.

No-one has the right to demand what others should think or feel. Particularly when they're only discussing their views of footballers' abilities. I'm sick of this 'no-criticism of anything' brigade.

We're LFC, not the National Front.

Oh and 'The Guv'. Read this:

"my worry is that we seem to constantly aim to sign unproven future stars/or not stars depending. In theory I like the idea but is it an ideology that will only bring what Wenger has given to Arsenal?. pretty football with a reputation for being nice to watch yet totally unruthless and potless for nigh on 8 years."

Remind you of anyone?

That's you talking last summer.

Don't be such an 'uberfan' hypocrite.

Your post says 'YNWA'. So let people think and say what they want.

We're all LFC fans, and whatever XI players step onto the hallowed turf of Anfield in August, we will all be rooting for them, and we will want the same thing. Victory.

Well said and good post, but I think the people you are on about in thepost won't change and the post will go over their heads, but well said

LAMBERT IS A GOOD SIGNING! only problem is that he is 32. although how many players would be willing to wait on the bench and use them as a plan B option and be happy in doing that with real quality? not many and he is one of them! WELCOME BACK TO ANFIELD

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's 32, and what's worse is, over time, he may develop to be 33, or even 34.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 19:34:25
If the lambert deal goes through just interested in who everyone thinks/wants to take penalties if both Gerrard and lambert are on the pitch? Bare in mind lambert has never missed.

I think the Carroll comparisons of lambert are off the mark, I think he's more like crouch. Yes he's tall and can hold up the ball bit he's also Ok on the deck too. I rather liked crouch so I'm Ok with having another one

Believable0 Unbelievable0

How is he like crouch!

Agree0 Disagree0

I described it in my post. In my opinion they are both deceptively good worth the ball for tall hold up forwards.

Going to throw my 2 pence in on lambert as we all appear to be divided.

I think it will prove to be a decent signing and I think people are just disappointed because he isn't a "big name". Looking at the facts it wasn't a position we want to spend a lot of money on as we have bigger fish to fry in other areas. He will slot straight in given that he has delivered for Southampton who play simarly to us. I ask who else people would have liked to have seen instead. It was never going to be a remy or bony who would not be happy to sit on the bench and would be considerably higher on wages or fee respectively. I also don't buy the we need someone to push on sas to perform as neither are of the mentality to rest on their laurels.

Anyone complaining of his age, would you complain if we had signed David villa? I doubt it but his wages would have been insane and he wouldn't be happy to not be the star man.

Am I over the moon about the signing? I wouldn't go that far but I think given all of the above it makes a lot of sense.

So with Liverpools signing of Lambert and their so far not accepted offer for Lalanna and other big premier league clubs queing up to make bids for half their team and with the manager gone to Spurs. How much of the team Southampton finished last season with will start for them the next?
Reminds me of 2000-2001 Ipswich, overachieved with a really good season, sold half their players the following summer, got relegated.

Lambert is a fantastic signing; shrewd bit of business. For all the criticism we came into last year about not having a 'plan B', well, we now have a 'plan B'.

Think about the Chelsea game at Anfield in particular. Despite their best efforts, Sturridge and Suarez just could not break through and as the game wore on, they were getting more and more frustrated and more and more desperate with their attempts. There was no real option to shake things up; with Lambert that option now exists.

I don't think anyone is under any illusions, least of all Rickie himself. He gets that he is a role player. That said, don't underestimate the importance of role players in the grand scheme of things.

For all of those who are bemoaning the signing of a low cost, over-30 player instead of a marquee name: take a pill. The window has not even officially opened yet. Who said Lambert was going to be our ONLY signing? Sit back and let's see how this all unfolds and judge our dealings in the window on a more meaningful sample size (closer to August) rather than making knee-jerk comments in June.

While I'm whining, can we also stop automatically writing off players just because they are no longer in their 20s? Again another common knee-jerk reaction. Let's judge players on their own merit regardless of age. Bottom line: they are either good or not good and what may make them good or not good could well be a function of their age but, let's not generalize. There are loads of players I wouldn't touch regardless of the fact that they are under 30 and in their prime. Let's stop treating the fact that a player is in his early 30s as a death sentence--for a player who has taken care of himself, has experience and who has ambition, the early 30s could very well be their prime years.

Final thought: I do feel sympathetic towards Southampton and their fans. Last couple of years, they had an exciting team full of promise. If all the alleged departures do in fact take place, it will leave their team decimated. Next season, it looks like Southampton will be a shadow of itself and will be fighting to avoid relegation. Their fans must be gutted.

It can't be a good feeling to see the 'bigger' teams raiding the minnows especially since all the hard work to nurture and develop these players was done by the minnows. It doesn't seem fair somehow. Yes, they make a profit on these players but, money doesn't guarantee a good player (see Spurs and try replacing all that Suarez brings even with $100 million).

With Southampton (assuming we also get Lallana), we benefit and as LFC fans it's exciting but, put the shoe on the other foot. We certainly feel aggrieved when teams like Barca, Real or Chelsea have the nerve to start sniffing around our top players.

It's reality and as long as the game is about the bottom line it is not going to change. I get it. Just a little sad it has to be that way is my point.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree, It is sad to see. A similar thing happens here in Ireland. The quality of the league isn't great because any player who shows any sort of promise at is cherry picked by clubs over in England. Not always top clubs either. That is just where the money and glory is, sad to see but understandable. It happens every season, there is a shock team that does well in Europe, a la Dortmund or Athletic Bilbao, this season it was Atletico Madrid, and they lose their key players. If a team who gets to the final of the champions league cannot keep hold of their players then there is something wrong.

Agree0 Disagree0

Gary McAllister was said to be past it and a strange signing and look how good that deal turned out to be.

Agree0 Disagree0

I am willing to accept that at the price Lambert isn't a bad signing but let's not kid ourselves that he's a great player.
Just imagine that he wasn't a Liverpool fan, you'd all have a different opinion, or if Chelsea were signing him you'd all be asking "is that the best they can do"
As an option off the bench he may prove to be ok but I'm disappointed to be honest and I think signing a 32 year old shows a lack of ambition.
Just my opinion

Agree0 Disagree0

Think a lot of people are clutching at straws on this signing

Agree0 Disagree0

I sort of agree with Chris. It does leave you a bit deflated if this is the type of player we are goinf for but I guess we will have to wait and see who else we bring in and not solely focus on 1 signing. What I will say is that I can see him having more impact than Aspas so that can only be better for the team. If Lambert got 10 goals a season would that be a good return even for the 2 seasons? Lwts see who else we buy before getting the knives out.

Agree0 Disagree0

Why chiswick?

People said we didn't need another striker, other areas are priority blah blah. We get Lambert for 4m and will sell Aspas for more how is the squad not strengthened with a million or so towards another signing? People get wet over players like Rodrigo (29 goals in 2 seasons in a weak league) who would cost 25m but don't fancy Lambert for 21m less with 29 goals in 2 seasons in the Prem. 2 in 4 at international level too.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 21:03:56
I see your point Chris, but surely you would prefer the majority of funds to be invested into our defence. Don't forget we already have Suarez and Sturridge who are both world class. Lambert is merely a squad player. I would expect that say Suarez picks up an injury then Sturridge will play as a lone striker and vica versa. Lambert will be key in the cup games and he isn't a bad sub to have. We also have Borini who will be given a chance next season.

The link with Chelsea is irrelevant really as their 3rd choice striker is Demba Ba and personally I'd prefer Lambert. Chelsea also aren't blessed with the caliber of strikers we already have in SAS.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

Red Rum, as I said I don't think it's a terrible choice by any means and I know he'll give us another option and be happy to be back up. That said he didn't score that many last season if you ignore penalties, which I do, and at 32 he's only had 1 season in the top flight which tells you something surely.
4 million is about right though so I'm not going to be anti his signing like I was when Carroll signed.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ignore penalties?

Agree0 Disagree0

Reusch, yes ignore penalties
Scoring penalties is not a reflection of the ability of a player and it certainly doesn't tell you how good a striker they are.
In fact in my opinion they shouldn't count in a players "goals scored" column

Agree0 Disagree0

Penalties count as goals don't they? And if you get one and are 100% sure the taker will score it even better.

Hey ed's & red's
Just a little thought I had about today's poll regarding Dejan Lovren and whether or not he will fix our defensive issues. Before I start, I am not in any way trying to be negative or doubting our transfer committee/manager just a topic I thought i'd bring up for discussion.

Many fans have asked the question throughout the season that 'if we still had Jamie Carragher in defence would we have won the title/been more solid defensively?' as a result of his leadership qualities and experience. My question is, with many people saying we need a defensive leader, is Dejan Lovren the answer?

Personally I think he's had a great season for his first year in the PL and could well be what we need defensively but I am just keen to hear everyone else's thoughts.

Cheers.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think calling him the solution to our defensive issues is a bit much. It's a bigger problem of confidence, responsibility and positioning that needs work.

But is he a very good player who would improve us a lot? Certainly!

Agree0 Disagree0

Lovren is fantastic, we should of signed him when he was at Lyon, he has great positional sense, great composure on the ball, fantastic at tackling, him and Sakho would forge a tremendous CB pairing.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 17:28:03
He is a leader and a good back 4 organizer. It may take time for him, Vorm, Sakho, Flanno & Moreno to gel so we'll have to be patient but I reckon by Christmas they'll be solid & by season's end they could be impenetrable or at least as impenetrable as any defence can be with the high-risk style we play.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah, I haven't watched enough of him to say that he is the leader who will solve our defensive issues. I don't think the personnel are the issue. I think that the best remedy would be to have a consistent CB pairing, Sakho and Agger or even Ilori. Sell Skrtel while he has value. If after a season we are still showing no improvement then maybe we should look to new personnel. I just don't think that buying a player will resolve the problem.

Agree0 Disagree0

Redkev do you know something we don't know? Picking players for next season that haven't even signed yet? Wow.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 15:48:36
does the arrival of lambert mean the end for borini? or is brendan planning on always playing two up top next season which will be fine?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ck95 . I expect that it's the end for aspas, and we will play the same way as last season, but when LFC are 2.0 up with 15 mins To go we can bring on a quality striker who will more than lightly score the 3rd then a player who is struggling with the prem league mate imo

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 00:20:05
A question for ed007 if he is about, I read you said the bundesliga is the best league around, and if like to know why you think that? Not questioning it just an interesting notion in my opinion! Yes bayern and to some extent Dortmund are in the elite few in Europe, but apart from that I don't see as much competition as the likes of epl!
Personally I think la liga has the most top end quality, but epl has the most quality overall. bayern played arsenal and united both were tough opposition for bayern and they were 3rd and 7th respectively. I don't see the 7th place team in the bundesliga causing too many problems for the likes of Barca and Madrid who themselves blew away bayern?!
Anyway, that's my thoughts, bit excessive I know!
Must say I share my thoughts with you on messi too, would love for him to leave Barca and prove himself properly.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - I just think that the Bundesliga is a the best all round league in the world, for a start the way fans are treated (£104 for a season ticket at Bayern Munich, 15 Euros to get into Dortmund's Yellow Wall) puts the EPL to shame, IMO the supporters are the most important thing in football, the EPL isn't geared towards the fans, it's geared towards money, the Germans appreciate their supporters and show it with the treatment, season tickets usually come with travel passes and tokens for food & drink. Can you see Chelsea or Arsenal doing that for the fans?
The general level of football in the the Bundesliga is far better than anything going round Europe, I'd much rather watch Schalke 04 play Werder Bremen than Stoke v Crystal Palace or Malaga v Celta Vigo. Even with the circus and razamattaz Sly use to build-up the EPL a lot of the games are boring and technically inferior to Germany and Spain who both have a much higher general standard of players than England.
Take away, or open your eyes and look through, Sly's input to an EPL matchday and 90% of the matches are woeful to watch, the players and teams can't produce the quality to match Sly's hype.
I have been over to Germany for a few St Pauli matches back in the day and been to the Westfalenstadion 3 times and the whole matchday experience just blew me away, I would definitely recommend everybody tries a trip to a German match at least once in their life. The EPL is a long, long way behind the Bundesliga and La Liga in every department apart from £, and money really isn't everything in football, no matter what Sly try to drum into us. The cheating in La Liga, on and off the field is holding it back, the stop/start of a lot of games due to diving etc can make games terrible to watch.
The vast majority of top players in Germany are German and teams are built around a German core, English teams on the other hand are filled with very mediocre home-grown players not to mention the average at best foreign players who are only stifling the flow of youngsters coming through while getting paid astronomical wages they are basically not worth in terms of what they bring to the game.}

It's much better to be a fan in Germany basically than anywhere else. I had a mate living in Germany and he always said the same as ed7 there, and he's been a fan here and in Germany.
Football in Germany is football with all the unnecessary drama and the money taken out. We have a lot to learn over here.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 16:07:31
Completely agree with ed007. I much prefer the bundesliga standard of football and apart from Dortmunds shocking results this year I have really enjoyed watching them especially in more recent history. The only thing I slightly disagree with is the standard of matches being better in La Liga than the epl. I enjoy the diversity of the EPL, I appreciated Pulis' Stoke because of it's simplicity for example.

Agree0 Disagree0

Although it's impossible to altogether disagree with that ed7, isn't Schalke v Werder Bremen more equivalent to Everton v Spurs than Stoke v Palace?
I've always been cynical of the perfect image of Spanish football with the whole sale of TV rights issue, but Athletico Madrid have just turned me this season. Koke is an absolutely wonderful talent, but just one of many young Spanish midfielders waiting to replicate Xavi and Iniesta's dominace of the world in the coming years.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - It doesn't make any difference what teams you mention, the point is that the overall quality throughout the league is higher and more consistent than in the EPL or La Liga. Football, particularly if the match doesn't involve your own team, is supposed to entertain you apart from the 'big' matches in England there isn't much entertainment football wise and a lot of them even flatter to deceive and fall flat. How many matches from the EPL did you sit and enjoy watching last season not counting matches involving Liverpool? The level of technical ability and the entertainment/value for money isn't there to capture the imagination of a neutral, the standard of football played in Spain and Germany is much higher than anything the EPL offers.}

Ed you definitely have a good argument but do you not think Bayern's dominance takes away a bit from the Bundesliga? I have also been watching a bits of German football over the last two or three years and at times it can be very labored and slow, that's not to say England is much better. Dortmund for a while played football every bit as good as ours this season, as well I did watch a game between Frankfurt and I think it was Hannover that was incredible. Both the Spanish and German Leagues are superior technically but I think in general slower. I agree, Barcelona and Madrid seem to have the football association over in Spain in its back pocket. The likes of Valencia and Athletico Madrid, maybe even Bilbao may have one fantastic season where they challenge but they will not stay for long. Italian football is starting to pick up, I watched Sassuelo play Hallas Verona and it was great end to end football. I think we have a very few good footballing teams out of the top 5-6 clubs.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Did years of Man Utd dominance take away from the EPL? It's not about who win things it's about the overall quality of the product and Germany is ahead of everyone on that score.}

Very interesting ed, isn't it something like an arsenal game is similar price to a bayern season ticket? And when they played them on the UCL they payed a chunk for their fans, the epl could definitely take notes on that! Maybe reintroducing standing stands could be helpful!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Arsenal set the price of an away ticket at £62 but the Germans stepped in and only charged their fans £37 and covered the cost difference. The most expensive standard seat for Arsenal supporters was £132 - almost £100 more than the Germans had to pay.

Higher quality is harsh ed but also you rearly see the smaller clubs beat the top of the tables eg Liverpool vs Palace

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - Well that succinctly covered all the salient points.}

Ed
You say the Germans appreciate their supporters.
I am not surprised in the least, having lived there for 10 or so years (army family) as a kid.
We used to play local German kids teams and almost always got battered, before going to stay with one of the kids families for a weekend or so.
They were always the most welcoming, generous folk that I have yet to meet anywhere.

I will (as I have been promising myself for years!) return to take in a game or two.
Good times.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed7 funnily enough the games I enjoyed watching as a neutral last season were whenever Southampton were on as Lallana would light up the game. I also enjoyed watching the Toffees on occasion, and, of course, watching United lose were moments I'll forever cherish, I guess that's not a neutral view though!

Not sure about Lambert. I would say an improvement on Aspas but not a great improvement. £4mil is a fair price but don't really see that as a great signing. To me it will either be very shrood or very we don't have the budget kind of signing. We finish second in the premier league I would hope to see a little more intent. We need depth and options with quality for next campaigne. Realy hope Lambert can cut it at the level we are at. Not a moan just struggling to see what signing Lambert shows.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Brendan got abuse last season for not having a plan B, this was very evident against Chelsea. Lambert is the kinda of signing that will be happy to sit on the bench, he has proven his quality in the EPL and will offer us an alternative against teams who sit back. He's a much better option than Aspas and I think at 4m is a shrewd bit of business YNWA

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 16:13:42
He scored 13 goals more and 9 assists more than Aspas, albeit having played more games.

Slight improvement?

Agree0 Disagree0

Massive improvement on Aspas. I still don't see haw hoofing the ball to a target man constitutes a sound plan B I think he can certainly play in our system and he is a well respected Premiership player.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 18:12:48
I think it's a great bit of business. He's proven to be consistently effective in this league over 2 years. Sure he's 32, but that's why we're only paying £4m for him. If he plays well for even two seasons, then that £4m will be bordering on theft.

Personally, I think its great we get Lambert. He really is a great player and will have plenty of chances throughout the year with all the extra games and possible injuries. Imagine Sturridge or Suarez getting injured in the WC and missing the first 6 games for instance?

I really hope we are able to pull off the Lallana deal too. He will suit us perfectly. I feel sorry for Saints though (my son is at the Academy) but they have a load coming through and will be ok.

As a final thought. with BR going for these players, does anyone think he is trying to assemble the English team at LFC? :) We have 5 at WC, Flano on standby, and others coming through, add Lambert and Lallana and only a few positions to go! :o)

All this stuff about Lambert being a Liverpool fan which means he'll give his best, what's the point if his best is'nt good enough, people are letting their hearts rule their heads (nice guys finish 2nd), people talk about his experience what experience, he's played in the premiership for 2 years an has never played in europe. Rodgers is always saying we have to buy players who fits into are system of playing and I don't think Lambert does. We're in the business of winning trophies and to do this we need to buy good young players with potential or players who are coming into their prime. There's mention of a 2 year contract, I think these 2 years would be better spent blooding a talented young striker. This signing is just plastering over a crack soon enough it will rear its ugly head again.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 May 2014 12:48:04
Sorry Mate, But we did stuggle last year without a striker like him, A good signing given the price and contract.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm only going to say 1 thing, you're an person. Lambert is playing 2nd fiddle behind SAS which he is happy to do so and his return last year ( 1 of 4 players to finish double digit goals and assists) and the year before proves shrewd business. Not all signings can be these "Marquee signings" you seem to crave. We're building a squad capable of competing on all fronts

Agree0 Disagree0

To be honest I was shocked (to say the least) when I read we had signed Lambert. let's keep faith that Brendan is still on his long term plan, give the lad a chance & let's hope there are at least 4 or 5 top quality signings over the summer, eg, Llalana, Can, Moreno, Markovic, Kono, Lovren, Shaqiri to name a few that will improve the squad.
YNWA.

Agree0 Disagree0

Last season at times we struggled to break down stubborn defences when our attack couldn't thread a ball through or dribble their way past them. Lambert isn't just a lumping forward, he holds up play well and his passing is pretty damn good too. He'll give us an option to worry big defenders. A solid team is a team that has a myriad of options to compete against all the different types of players. 13 goals and 10 assists is also a healthy return for a PL season, and for £4m + add-ons it seems like a smart move. Definitely a move a lot of us weren't expecting, but one that'll definitely be interesting to watch either way!

JFT 96

Agree0 Disagree0

I would say Southampton play similarly to Liverpool hence why we are interested in lallana and lovren also. 4 mill for a striker who guarantees 20 goals a season (including assists) is great business I'd say he isn't going to be demanding mad wages either. the comparisons to Carroll are non existent also. Carroll can barely use his feet and has way less mobility.

Quick question though eds ssn saying we bid 20 mill for lallana just wondering was this a second bid or the same first bid. I know you fdont like finances but I'm just asking if we've bid twice or just the once

Agree0 Disagree0

He's our THIRD choice striker who's never missed a pen at S'mpton, is physical, can assist and scores from anywhere and a red t boot, whereas Arsepass. erm y'know the rest.

Agree0 Disagree0

Redjack81 Lambert is an exciting player who is aggressive, can hold up play, pass the ball, deliver crosses, head the ball, an in and out of the box finisher, good at penalties and set pieces and most of all a lifelong LFC fan who was dd enough in his youth days. What a fantastic opportunity to get a chance to prove that second chances do come.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hes a nice guy but the bottom line is he isn't good enough to start for Liverpool. Coming on as a sub fair enough,, but I have to admit I was hoping we'd be signing champions league quality players this window. Going backwards IMO

Agree0 Disagree0

Can't wait to see your nickname for lambert after he struggle andred. Arsepass, for a player who is struggling to get minutes yet still gives his all? Classy.

Agree0 Disagree0

I disagree completely. If this youngster was to be blooded into the squad, you would then moan that we don't have players with experience.

Southampton play a similar style to LFC and Lambert has done well in his 2 years in the PL.

Also, this talented youngster wouldn't want to sit on the bench either.

Agree0 Disagree0

People say Lambert is too old, yet he's nearly 2 years younger than Gerrard.

People say he's not good enough, yet only 12 people scored more goals in the Premier League than him last year (and 3 of those are already our players) and only 3 players had more assists (and two of those already play for us as well). The year before last, only 9 players in the Premier League scored more than Lambert's haul of 15 and the year before that he was the highest scorer in the Championship with 27 goals.

People say he's a 'target man' or Carroll-like, which I suppose is somewhat true in that he can score with his head, but what they seem to be missing is he also creates a lot of opportunities for his teammates. Last season, he created 54 chances for Soton- more than Oscar created for Chelsea, more than Sterling created for us, more than Toure created for City, more than Wilshere for Arsenal, and not far off Henderson's 62 or Coutinho's 65.

People say we can spend the money better. If the reported £4M is accurate, that's less than we spent on Sahin's loan fee and just a bit more than we spent on Assaidi. For me, given the above, that represents real value for money and to be honest I think we got a screamer of a deal.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 16:19:55
Lambert out assisted Coutniho, Hazard, Oscar, Oezil, Cazorla, Yaya Toure, Eriksen, Mata, David Silva, Nasri, Navas.

Yup, backward step; not good enough. If he was a 26 year old Belgian and cost 40 million, he would have been the next thing since sliced bread.

Hi to all the Eds and fellow REDS

I had signed off and had promised myself not to post anything until the season begins. but reading some of the negative posts.
Why are some fans so negative about anything the club does? Yet they are the first to cheer the teams when they are proved wrong! It's the freedom of speech that is to blame (lol).
Lambert is a proven PL goalscorer, skillful on the ground and in the air. In my humble opinion, it is a very shrewd move by Brendan, at £4M there would've been a queue of clubs waiting to sign him.
Listen, I just tend to support whatever Brendan does, because that is his job, his life and his whole purpose. And, he knows what he's doing! DAH!
By all means, suggest players to buy or pass opinion about rumours, but, PLEASE spare us your negativity about players about to sign and become REDS!
We are going to have a formidable squad next year, Moreno, Lallena or whoever we buy will be suited to our style of football. the detractor will love Lambert once he scores a few goals. He is the obvious and perfect plan B that we might have been missing.

I will sign off now, sorry about the rant, looking forward to the world cup with 6 Liverpool players in the squad! Life is good, guys, enjoy instead of, you know.
Also, my Iranian background pulls me towards sympathy towards Iran, although realistically they don't have a chance, but it does add a little extra amusement.
I did read we might be interested in a 19 year old player dubbed 'the Iranian Messi'! Plays for Rubin kazan I think. Would be great to have an Iranian do his stuff for the REDS (if he's any good!)

Have a great summer Eds and fellow REDS YNWA

I saw a lot of Southampton this season. I was mainly watching other players but Lambert still stood out along with Lallana. Since we agreed a fee yesterday I've made it my mission to watch Lambert in full. Managed to get some footage of him (particularly both games against us) and he is actually so much more than a target man lads. He's more like Luis Suarez than Carroll. His technique is excellent, his control is instant, he can pick out some bloody brilliant passes and his dead ball ability is on par with Suarez's easily. He isn't quick, but neither is Luis. 13 goals and 10 assists are not stats to turn your nose up at bearing in mind he played for a mid table team. If the £4m fee is correct, then this is the best bargain since Gary Mac! He might not have the flair or audacity of Suarez, but he is more powerful and far more clinical.

Welcome to Anfield Rickie, do us proud lad.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Could not agree more. I don't know if I'm biased because also last year I watched Southampton (when I could) and Instantly took a shine to Lambart.
I don't understand why people are being so negative,
Just support the team we're all passionate about.
Welcome Ricky ynwa

Agree0 Disagree0

Wow he's more like Suarez now this is incredible

Agree0 Disagree0

Thats what we need. Players with passion. The guy will work his socks off. I've got a feeling Lallana and Lovren are not far off signing for us. Moreno and Can would be quality signings! Vorm aswell. Also would like us to go back in for Konoplyanka to round off a great summer!

Agree0 Disagree0

Fanatic viewer, if you'd even watched him once you'd understand that reference. Do me a favour and stop judging players based on FIFA and MOTD. Lambert has serious technical ability and relies on this far more than he relies on his power which just comes as an added bonus.

Just go out and find a full 90 minute highlight of him and you'll see the comparison. Obviously Suarez is better and more consistent, but Suarez doesn't cost £4m and won't sit on the bench until the 70th minute.

Agree0 Disagree0

Adam come on Lambert doesn't come close to Suarez when it comes to how technically good they are. You stated numerous times during the season that a player of his type is no good to Liverpool that we play with interchanging forwards. now that we've bought a big centre forward you change your opinion. You need to stop slating poeple when they state they'd like a forward such as benteke, lukaku or bony because your starting to look very hypocritical I was the exact same when you said grrard can't play holding role. I've always wanted a plan b who we need when playing against the likes of park the bus teams where our intricate passing won't break them down we need someone who can finish crosses.

Can you imagine the roar Lambert will get from all the fans when he scores his first goal for Liverpool? Kirkby-born life long fan, released at a young age by the club, returning at a point in his career when surely he believed it wasn't going to happen. Surely it's those sort of moments that mean everything to footballers. It'll be like the Flanagan celebration all over again!

Redohio I've been reading some sevilla fans comments this morning and they are saying that but not because they don't rate him. they all think the amount offered along with suso is just to good to turn down. They already have a very good second choice left back to take Moreno's place in the first team.

with lambert signed who will now be the dead ball specialist, he scored some great goals from free kicks and I don't think he misses a pen all last season, i'm not sure on that one about the pens, plus it will help when we have 3 great free kick takers because the goalie won't know who will be taking them,

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Suarez will be taken them.

Agree0 Disagree0

34 goals from 34 penalties since he has been at Southampton. Has only missed 2 in his entire career.

Its the same every transfer window the first player we actually come close to signing the abuse starts, what makes it worse is the player happens to be a fellow life long red and he still gets the same stick. People moaning that we need a left back so what's the point in signing another striker, thank god your not in charge of transfers. Of course we need a left back and i'm sure the club know that but the doesn't mean that's the position we have to address first just as long as it gets done. I'd be very happy with Lambert he adds something to the squad that could well come in handy.

hi reds

i think the reason we bought lambert is because of the way we got beat by chelsea, they only had demba ba up front, but he used his strentgh well, and his running and hold up play was there for all us to see, now if we get lambert we can use the same tactics, it worked for chelsea, and with the speed of some of our players then he won't have to hold the ball up that long, do we have a player like this at the club = no we don't will it give us another attacking option = yes and for the price we are paying then its a win, win all round plus lambert will be able to battle with the likes of demba ba, plus no one as mentioned it yet so I will, he is a fantastic free kick taker, some of his goals from free kicks where great, plus he is also good from the spot, maybe some fans forgot about these things

he will be a very good signing for us and get us goals in important games or when chelski park the 2 busses in front of the goal

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If you think we bought Lambert because of the chelsea result then you`re fooling yourself. We bought Lambert because of what he adds to the squad which will come VERY useful and has nothing to do w/ any other club.

Greetings Eds & fellow reds

Really chuffed to see Ricky signed up. He is a massively underrated footballer, who will run through walls for us .

If the fee is 4million, I would like to ask anyone if they think they could find any other striker who is proven in the top league, and will hit the ground running?

This is the lads dream move, and I for one am glad we don't have to face him next season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

With Lambert pretty much a Liverpool player. would you sell borini? fair to say aspas is likely to leave

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I see Lambert as 4th striker after SAS and Borini, unless LFC is faced with a very physical team or game, in which case I see Lambert coming in ahead of Borini as a substitute. I don't see the need to sell or loan out Borini.

Agree0 Disagree0

Keep them both and both would start on the bench, therefore giving options depending on what BR thinks we need to get a result.

Very clever signing, imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 12:12:38
Lambert would feature more games than Borini. You could see him cmong on every 60 mts. He is a much overall striker than Borini.

Agree0 Disagree0

Borini and Aspas to go. I think youve just got to let aspas leave he isn't good enough, and as for borini maybe someone is interested in him, he has had a sucsessful loan spell after all, maybe its better for all parties if he's sold

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 10:37:13
As much as I like Lambert as a player I can't help but think he will be wasted talent sitting on the bench at Liverpool. He will not get games if SAS are half as good as they were in the season just gone! I doubt he will get any more England call up's due to lack of appearances! I understand he is a Liverpool fan and it's everyone's dream to play for their home team. I just think it's poor decision making all round, he can lead Southampton to potentially another really good position in the league or waste away on the bench of the team he loves! Tough choice I know but I feel sad for him as I think this spells the end of his playing career! would love to hear others thoughts.

(this is not me bashing a signing before he even arrives I like him and think he is a good player I just want to see a player like that play more than he will with us!)

Cheers

I think hell be extremely usefull. If SAS are fit he won't start but he gives us a new dimension or plan b coming on from the bench. with us being in 4 competitions I think he'll be playing a lot, even if it is from the bench. I think he's a decent signing

Agree0 Disagree0

Personally I can see him playing a lot actually. Sturridge is so injury prone that he's a risk playing twice a week and Suarez might need a rest every now and then. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see us occasionally line up with Suarez and Sturridge either side of Lambert, and maybe Raheem behind. Bloody offensive, I know, but not beyond the realms of possibility.

Agree0 Disagree0

I disagree. He will be a bench player to start with but we will have injuries suspensions and formation changes etc to deal with. He will play a good amount of games.

It is very encouraging that we have a striker who is proven and ready to go when required. This not disparaging Aspas or Borini, who I think will leave.

Agree0 Disagree0

He is a quality player both in the air and on the deck . I think towards the end of the season sas didn't look as good as they had . they need help and we have a lot of games ahead so for the money its a no brainer . we definately need more attacking options and can't rely upon 2 players having to play to their best and not get injured over a busy season. so personally I can't wait . he's better than aspas or carol!

Agree0 Disagree0

It could be that BR has plans for him, this is why we needed strenght in depth we never had it last season and we all know we need a bigger better squad for nezt season and I think signing rickey lambert could be another master stroke because we can change the way we play when he is playing, so I don't agreer with you, i'm sure lambert has not come to leep the bench warm, have faith, and I bet you were one of the fans saying we need strenght in depth, this happens at other clubs who are fighting for titles and europe and cups, plus I don't think lambert would have signed for us just to sit on the bench

Agree0 Disagree0

Welbeck, Jones, Smalling, Lampard. They all made the England squad and I'd expect Rickie to play as many minutes next season as any of them did this season.

Some of the more recent posts have said this but just to echo those thoughts - Lambert will be a great backup striker, in fact in terms of money, attitude and statistics I can't think of any better! Anyone?

Well done BR and team.

Hello mates, I need your opinions on this. I looked through about half of the games sevilla played last season and IMO Moreno doesn't in anyway fit the bill. The offer I hear we are making is outrageous about half of 30mill + Suso. That's just not right! Sevilla fans are so happy right now to have Suso rumoured to be on his way to Spain!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 May 2014 10:54:40
I have no clue on the figure. We won't be paying ransom. He is a top nocth LB and would prosper at the club. Control, speed and accelaretaions, with some good defensive qualities. I personally would have gone for a cheaper option.

Agree0 Disagree0

The papers mention a different fee (20 million Euros, but they want 2 million extra and don't want Suso on loan).

I have agree with you on Alberto Moreno perhaps not being the best LB option available.

Agree0 Disagree0

Do you actually know any sevilla fans? I doubt we'd let suso go to be honest

Agree0 Disagree0

Ive never seen a transfer fee referred to like that . Did you know we're signing lambert for half of 8 million?

Agree0 Disagree0

, in today's transfer news, Southampton want half of 50 million plus half of 2 players for Adam Lallana and will hold out for closer to half of 40 million for Lovren. Hey this system is genius! It makes Suarez worth half of 200 million euro! :)

Agree0 Disagree0

If we sign the players Macca listed I for one will be as happy as hell, all players That play for the shirt and give everything, all in my opinion would be good signings for us and will help us to take us on to where we want to be, I think lambert is a really good player, good for ten or fifteen goals

Fully agree with the Lambert signing. He'll offer a style of play upfront that's missing now, especially when faced with tall lumbering defenders that our SAS can't dance around. He's a seasoned professional who'll run on into the field and just go about doing what is expected of him. He'll also offer a good counter-balance on the bench for what I always fear is an episode of petulant and mercurial behavior from our beloved SAS. All is usually calm, but success does things to some of these guys' heads and we have seen little hints of it here and there on the field. It's just a minor point.

I'm appalled at some of the suggestions on here about whatever is really happening in the Lallana/Southampton/Bournemouth situation. It's despicable, unacceptable and unconscionable that Liverpool fans be in support of any hint of supposed unethical and underhanded dealings. And I commend the Eds for taking the actions they have taken.

Hello fellow LFC fans. Can anyone recommend any iPhone apps that provide updates on transfer rumors. Ideally specific to Liverpool FC but if there are better ones that focus on the premier league etc then just as good.

Thanks in advance and let's hope for a successful World Cup and summer transfer window!

If you are not happy with Lambert then you need your head testing!

A striker isn't a priority so to get someone with his experience and proven quality who will play in the cup games and of the bench in the prem, maybe even a few starts is a great bit of business IMO.

I would much rather we got Lambert than spend on an unproven player from another league. Look at Aspas.

*disclaimer* this opinion is void if LFC fail to purchase Lambert.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 May 2014 09:24:08
Mr. T

But, Then Y did we purchased Aspas?. Could have bought Lambert last summer?. Everyone changes their opinion from time to time.
Personally, I like lambert, He is a massive Liverpool fan, Proven and at 4 mill, he would be a very good business. But let's not find some stupid reasons.

Agree0 Disagree0

Harry, Aspas was bought because he was almost the sole reason Celta Vigo stayed up last season, he played incredibly well against the big teams like Real Madrid, and was directly involved in 52% of all Celta's goals that season. He was available at a price Liverpool were willing to pay and as such they got him. His only big drawback is the fact the physicality hasn't suited him. That's my take on why he was bought anyway - it isn't like Liverpool looked at him and thought, 'Iago Aspas, sounds exotic, buy him!'

I have no problem in buying Aspas or Lambert. Every signing has a reaosn. Some doesn't go well while some does wonders. If you support, Then you should support through out or let's be blunt and express our honest opinions.
Tom, If Liverpool decides to sell Allne or Lucas, What would you say, FLops?, Out of the wage bill?

Agree0 Disagree0

We do not live in an ideal Universe. We buy players thinking they will succeed but unfortunately for Aspas, it didn't work out.

Harry's question is strange, as usual.

Agree0 Disagree0

Toure, aspas, alberto, borini etc. All flops, yet on here when they were signed you all gave it the beans about what shrewd/great signings they were, I really think if they signed me you crowd would say " a little from leftfield but waro could be an excellent addition to the squad "!

You are allowed to question signings you know, it doesn't make you a bad fan. The reason for my post? You crowd have already started with the great signing crap with regards lambert, £4mill plus add ons for a 32 year old who's on his way down ( don't use gary mac as a comparison by the way, different positions and quality level .)

Well done F$G, more bargain basement shopping, when you sell the naming rights on the ground, how about the poundland or aldi arena, a fitting title for penny pinching venture capatilists, take a bow Henry and Werner

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 May 2014 09:33:58
Waro.

Borini isn't a flop mate, he would give us 10 mill anyday, Decides to sell. that's never a loss.
Rest I agree.

You are allowed to question signings you know, it doesn't make you a bad fan.

No dear, It does make you a bad fan, I am a living example, I have criticised many signings here, Apart from Henderson, None have proved me wrong.

I Disagree your on Lambert, He is the ideal striker at 4 mill, Boyhood fan, Works hard, A new dimension to our attack. He has goals in him. Lukaku and Bony who are similar type players would cost any team 20 mill +

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh Waro, Waro, Waro. always so angry.
'on his way down. ' I assume you mean because he's 32? Because if you didn't notice he scored 13 league goals and provided 10 assists just last season and is now on his way to the World Cup and about to move to his boyhood club. Hardly his career crashing down around him is it?!
Good luck to Rickie, always nice to see a genuin fan make the dream move. even if it is later in his career, a bit like John Aldridge I suppose.

Agree0 Disagree0

Just out of interest who should we have signed as 4th choice striker waro?

Agree0 Disagree0

Waro, when you go into Aldi, all the really iffy stuff is stacked near the entrance.
Well, don't worry mate, we gone past that now and have taken the trolley around the corner and into the first aisle.

Agree0 Disagree0

So your calling yourself a bad fan harry? You really don't help yourself harry do ye lad!

Waro.

Thats what some thinks here, I don't need to open my body, cut my viens and say I bleed Liverpool.
You just need to support your club, be concerned, and just enjoy the footie.
I am certainly not an Emotional fan, Rather a realestic one.

Agree0 Disagree0

If we signed Waro I'd be really cheesed off and it would make me question FSG's motives and ambition for the club.

Agree0 Disagree0

The general consensus is a player peaks at 28, so yes he's on the way down isn't he t and t, a lad a few years back playing for Bolton called Ricketts had a great 18 months, scored more than Lambert and got an England call up and was younger, but the following season did nothing and was never heard of again so that point is redundant t and t.

f view, I don't want a 4th choice striker I want a striker to push Dan and Luis and make them raise there game to even higher levels, someone who if those two don't perform will push one of them out of the first 11 and keep them out.

Juicer, sorry fella, that post was Cantonaesq ( just missing the seagulls ) so I can't retort.

Agree0 Disagree0

A self confessed critic of LFC players, regardless of how good, bad or hardworking or nonchalant they are.

Agree0 Disagree0

If you question about the reasoning why we sign some particular player but you still give full support to that player and wish him perform well wih us regardless of what you think about him then you're not a bad fan at all
But if you question the signing, label him as crap, useless etc etc before he even kicks a ball and you hope he turns out to be crap so you can say to other people "I told you so" the you are indeed a bad fan

Agree0 Disagree0

Correct Indonesian Red. That was the point I was making, the same people on here who hailed Aspas as a fantastic signing now want rid of him without the lad being given a decent crack at it, it's the two faced nature of the posters on here.

I complained about the Aspas and Alberto signings last summer only to be met with similar posts as todays (so far), I was questioning the owners ambition with these types of signings, I wanted them to do well but was pretty sure they wouldn't bring us to the next level of progression and I was right, but have never come on here crowing about it and am only bringing it up now to prove a point, even though I didn't want Aspas I still feel he hasn't been given a chance to prove me wrong. It's not Lambert I'm having a pop at it's these people who own my team.

I will be delighted if he does really well, but just as with Aspas and Alberto I don't think he will, that's no the players fault it's the people who appear to be making the manager work in a low budget restrictive way were he has to look at this level of player.

Agree0 Disagree0

At the end if the day Waro it's only £4 million + whatever add ons there may be. He is a proven goalscorer at every level and yes is 32 but for his style of play I don't think mobility is such a big issue. He also played incredibly well in a team which focuses on passing and it's quality of play, not to dissimilar to our own style. I really do think the pro's outweigh the con's on this one. Although I do think the scouting team needs to really look for a young & physical long term replacement for Lambert as he clearly won't be around for 5/6 seasons. This is of course assuming that he is as effective as he was at Southampton which I can only see happening.
The Real AG & Ollieston gave much better analysis to me as to why he is a good buy yesterday, definitely worth a read if you're still doubting his acquisition.

Agree0 Disagree0

Haha yes, I'm posting off the phone so it went prematurely there Waro.
Talking of which, one of the other disadvantages of aging is finding valid points in both sides of a debate. I agree with your points but, equally, I can see where fsg are coming from with the ground to do and ffp to deal with.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 07:43:54
Lambert? Were going backwards here. I hope he's thinking along the lines of dzeko style that city play and not going back to the carroll days of long balls and battering ram approach.
In all honesty I was hoping for a higher calibre of players in the window than ricky lambert

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You clearly haven't watched lambert play at all

Agree0 Disagree0

Lambert is nothing like Carroll. Infact, he is more like Dzeko.

Agree0 Disagree0

Dbol
Do you really think Brendon will change his own personal philosophy on how football should be played? Long ball? When he sold, in his words, one of the best strikers in Europe at attacking the ball in the air!
Lambert offers so much more than just an aerial threat. He has great vision and passing ability and if the price is anywhere near what has been mentioned (4m) I personally believe it is a great bit of business.
Suarez will need a rest at some stage and Sturridge is often getting niggling injuries. Add Borini to the mix and we'll be ok up front next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

30 May 2014 07:42:13
If its 4m, then Lambert would be a great addition, he's a fantastic finisher, right, left and head, always hits the target. Get in Can, Moreno, Lallana and maybe Kono, we will be flying for next season. I can't understand people moaning about such a great striker. Good work Brendan.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

30 May 2014 07:17:20
Really can't believe what I've been reading about Lambert.
We started the season with 4 senior out and out strikers. Borini was loaned out and Aspas didn't score a league goal and never threatened to break into the starting 11.
So what if Lambert is 32? If I'm not mistaken he's the first player to make the England squad from outside last season's top 6 clubs, (before his Southampton team mates).
He's on his way to Brazil on merit. The stats tell the story of what he's capable of and he's been fantastic.

Even if he only has a couple good seasons left in him there are a few things we know for sure. He loves the club and will give his all and he understands where he'll be in the pecking order.
We had a good season and I'm sure nobody will hold Aspas responsible for us not winning the league. Is he a better backup striker than Rickie Lambert? YOU DECIDE.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If Gerrard gets injured/needs a rest we've got the best penalty taker around. He's a scouser, a fan, and I happen to believe he's a much better player than some say on here.

i said a while ago, the only two player, I would want from southhampton are schneiderlien and lambert.
lambert seems done, and I hope we bid for schniederlein.

my other targets would include griezmann or carlos vela ( however both deals are strictly bent towards arsenal, arsenal could sign vela for peanuts)

rojo or contento ( I don't want to go for a pricey lb because our own flanno has made the position his )

anyone from kalou, kono, sharaawy or milner ( if we can get milner somehow, he would be an amazing signing) .

i think if kelly can keep himself fit he should play cb with sakho/skrtel/agger/toure.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The guy is a proven goalscorer who will obviously help in the development of youth
he will have no qualms about sitting on the bench and at 4 million and add ons he will be a steal
his signing will not mean Borini going as Borini can't play alone upfront he need a big guy with himeg Wickham
p.s please cut the 5hit about us cheating Bournemouth to think of us doing something like that is despicable

I think Lambert will be a good signing, he will offer something different in the front. A definite upgrade from Aspas. His penalty taking qualities might come in handy, let's say in a CL shoot outs. He's also a fan, so will give his all, good for him at the age of 32, from league 2 to LFC and World Cup!

He will be essential in the cup games and even at 32 he is hungry for success and loves the club. Decent squad player in my opinion.

Shaqiri
Vorm
Can

Think if we secure these players that would be fantastic.

It's my first post and admittingly a little disappointed with Lambert signing even if it's 4 mill plus ad ons. We could and should get Loic Remy for just below 10 mill, played fantastically well against Norway which he scored one and in addition his younger and got pace which fits in with Liverpool's attacking prowness.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Why not get Remy as well - then Liverpool have replacements for both Suarez and Sturridge?}

Bet he'd love to sit on our bench.

Agree0 Disagree0

Loic Remy has a dodgy and mercenary personality. I would hope we show no interest in him at all.

Agree0 Disagree0

As it is your first post, I will try to be objective and explain things like I would do to my 3 my 3 year old niece.

Rickie Lambert is a big LFC fan and a very good player.

1. Lambert was among only 15 players in Europe last season to have scored and assisted 10 or more in the league.

2. He had 13 assists last season, more than the likes of Oezil, Oscar, Coutinho, Hazzard, Yaya, Ramsey, Cazorla and Silva.

3. He scored 13 goals last season and has now scored 28 and assisted 17 in 75 PL appearances. Impressive stats.

4. Being a big fan of LFC, he wouldn't mind being a squad player unlike the likes of Remy, Bony or even Borini I suspect; who would all want regular football. They would also be costlier than Lambert.

5. Lambert also offers an aerial presence, but is at the same time comfortable with the ball and in a passing system unlike Andy Carrolll.

6. The younger players are only of advantage if they actually stay with us long enough. But another season of squad football, and I suspect even a Borini would have left and for a very low price.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ricky Lambert is a very good piece of business, He is a good player, A very good striker. He is miles above our back up strikers.

''His accent proved he was a red Lambert, Lambert,
Love the reds and hate the blues said Lambert, Lambert.
We signed a Scouse from the sunny South,
Pochettino couldn't understand a word out of his mouth.
Ric---kie Lam---bert Liverpool's new number 9?.'' :) Just for fun folks.

It always re-ignites the ever living dream inside when Liverpool sign a player older than myself, technically, mathematically I still have a chance of my dream. :D

I think Big Rick will certainly add a new dimension to the striking options. Rodgers is obviously looking to cover options that maybe he didn't have last season. So to those that automatically feel this is a negative transfer in some way by Liverpool or in someway a cheap or lackluster signing, i'd advocate reservations over any quick judgement and here are my reasons why.

Premier League performance: Rickie Lambert scored 14 goals and created 10 assists in 39 games last season and he scored 15 goals and 5 assists in 38 games in the 2012/13 season before that. So good was his performances for Southampton that an international career was about to bloom even if very late on in his career. He's played 4 games for England and scored 2 goals and created 2 assists, heading to the World Cup looking to add to the tally. Lambert is something of a late developer in terms of ability, or at least it getting noticed and appreciated to the point of an England call up, so getting his 1st England cap and goal at the age of 31 years young was little surprise for many on his Premier League performances over the last two seasons.

Also, since joining Southampton in the August of 2009 for around £1 million. Lambert has built up a reputation as a specialist from the penalty spot. He has converted his last 34 penalties and has not missed from the spot since moving to Southampton, a record that is rivaled by few in the footballing world, coin toss for penalties with Gerrard? :). He is a threat from set pieces as well, not just with his physical presence inside the box but actually taking them. Cabaye, eat your heart out son. :)

Bigger picture: With the extra games we have coming next season and our desire as a club to compete in all competitions both domestically and in Europe, I think Lambert can only be seen as an excellent asset gained towards helping us as a club in achieving that. With three of Liverpool's strikers (Sturridge and Suarez and Sterling) going to the World Cup, I think we need to ensure good quality in numbers as to fend off player burn out, that traditionally can and often does occur with players who have been involved in international competitive tournaments in the off season, Lambert is in the squad as well, but strength and quality in numbers is a very sensible approach in my opinion and we will need players with proven Premier League quality to come in and help when others tire and form tails off and of course, in case of the dreaded injuries hampering our chances.

Obviously he's a big lad, so he'll been seen as the old fashioned ''big man'', but Rickie Lambert can play excellent football, he has a quality touch, can spot a pass and created 15 assists in the Premier League over the last two seasons as his hold up play is very good and he incorporates other players around him as seen so often with the ''whippets'' supporting runs at Southampton over the last couple of seasons, they have have been brilliant and play a positive brand of football similar to us. He's not just the ''big man striker'' he has quality and for a proposed fee reported at £4 million with add on's possibly rising to around the double figure mark according to the 5Live Radio sports reporter, it seems like a very positive deal. Just IMO.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Have to agree with everything you say here Ollie, he gives another dimension as corny as that is to say. Not to mention he does give us that extra bit of grit when games seem to get physical.

hi eds and reds

i live in anfield, Liverpool, and in our paper the Liverpool echo its saying we are close to signing former red rickie lambert, the fee is about 4 mill, and another report says that we have bid 16 mill for alberto moreno with suso going the other way on loan, as we all know emre can is wanting more money a week it does not say the amount, also we are linked with vorm and kieta who we wanted in january, but he signed a 6 month deal with valencia and its saying he won't sign another contract with them

i hope this explains a few things for the fans wanting to know, as I've said its in the Liverpool echo and I don't know how true these storys are, i'm just passing on what I've read,

The Echo and BBC are probably the 2nd most reliable sources of info behind what the Eds say, usually don't post any muck on their websites with the Echo's links within the club giving it a slight edge over the BBC. Only 3 sources of info I trust

Who even cares if Lambert is 32 years old? Does nobody remember Gary McAllister and what he did for Steven Gerrard? And he was 35 when he signed. Maybe Lambert can play a similar role in the development of Jack Dunn and Jerome Sinclair. And as for no re-sale value? Well, how many of our younger players have we had a massive re-sale price on recently? And any that would have a higher price than we signed them for, well none of us want them to go anyway!

Whine when we perceive the club is missing out on targets
Moan when we do sign a target.

Some people obviously need something to moan about.
£9m or £4m let's get behind the lad and have a bit of positivity.

Thanks
