Everyone seems to be missing something huge, what this Meireles transfer shows about the direction our club is heading.
Last January Torres demanded a transfer and forced his way to Chelsea because he didn't think we offered a chance to win trophies.
Today Meireles demanded a transfer and forced his way to Chelsea because he wasn't good enough to get minutes on our team and feels he can get more playing time for Chelsea.
Its a huge difference, Meireles left cause he couldnt hack it here anymore.
Not so simple. its true he would be a periferal player at liverpool but, its horses for courses. kenny dalglish didnt see him in his plan , that doesnt make him a bad player . Boas obviously rates him and has a place for him, which might be the bench.

What is up with all the people that earlier in the window were moaning that we had far too many midfielders but now that Meireles is gone we are worrying that there are no replacements for Meireles.
We have Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Adam, Spearing, Shelvey and Coady if needed. There is no need to panic about it.

It is disappointing that Liverpool is the only team in top 6 who became weaker on deadline day by releasing Raul Meireless, Cole and Ngog and getting spent force Bellemy. Kenny should have shubbed his ego and kept Meireless because he was class. With Gerrard being a broken duck, who will run midfield and add any flair?
Nonsense. Look at how we've been playing. We're building a team to be reckoned with. And Gerrard isn't finished yet. Good times ahead.

Yes, Meireles is a good player, but not great and more importanly , not versatile. Ofcourse, there are other factors, he plays best in a 3 man midfield as the attacking mid, not quick enough for the wings and not strong enough for the 2 man centre mid. Henderson in effect is rauls replacement. Hes much quicker, wont pull out of challenges and can play in 2 man centre mid. Feel better? thought so

Great manager who lives and breathes for the club. Extremely solid start to the season. In my opinion all the transfers IN and OUT this summer have been very good for the club. Very strong squad now. Things are looking fine!

Stop with the negativity people! We've had an awesome transfer window. We have brough in real, competitive quality, got rid of players we didn't need. It's a new start! Look at how we played against Bolton. And Coates will be top quality... Bellamy may not be your idea of a 'marquee' signing', but he'll give give us something extra - some pace and bite in attack. I think it's been a phenomenal window. Compare the feeling to last year! Don't be spoilt... Meireles left because we could afford to let him go. Onwards and upwards. I do think Raul is a good player but isnt he injured and due back about the same time as Gerrard so i dont think well miss him as much as people think. for CM theres Gerrard, Adam, Lucas, Spearing, Shelvey and Bellamy can be put on the right son Henderson can be moved into the middle, so once Gerrard is fit i dont think he would of got to many games anyway

to be honest im a bit gutted about the way this window has panned out. dont get me wrong i am happy with the signing of bellamy BUT this was a no brainer with ngog going out n just carrol n suarez (well suarez) as our strike force we had to have a third striker. merieles has realy let me down and i know ill probably get s*!t for this but im disappointed in the way liverpool have handled the situation. YES, we robbed them blind (in retrospect) for nando at 50 mil but 12 mil for raul makes me feel a little sick 2bh. raul and lucas where oustanding for us last year and yet we sell him, (and i know hes forced it through and there would be disharmony in the changing room if he stayed but i still reserve my right to feel gutted)ah well. no matter how much i moan on here its not gonna change anything and ill keep my faith in kenny, how cud i not. The man obviously knows the score and maybe jay will get a shout now which i feel he deserves. i just wish we wud stop selling players to chelsea to be honest, only time will time if this is another "epic swindle" (lol)by my beloved club.

For me we still dont look strong enough, we have little depth to our team when you put it out like this. We really could have done with a wide man,creative midfielders (raul replacement) and a better striker than Bellamy. We now only have Gerrard as our creative attacking midfielder. Panic sale if you ask me regarding Meireles, dont understand why. I think we'll struggle to get higher than 4th. Sorry to put a downer on the last day of the window but we didnt really think these last day departures and additions through if you ask me.

Yes we have no depth, if by depth you mean quantity and not quality. Last year we had a huge squad but it was clogged up with the likes of Jovanovic, Cole, El Zhar, N'Gog etc etc. Now we have a squad which is smaller but has more quality. For comparison, look at who was starting this time last season (Aurelio, Jovanovic, Cole, Kuyt, N'Gog) with who's starting now (Enrique, Downing, Suarez, Henderson, Carroll)

been quite for a week without the moaners, suppose they can;t complain after the Bolton performance but see they are out in force again. Slightest chance to whinge and they do, change the record chaps.
Player hands in transfer request, do you sell them or keep an unhappy player who doesn't want to be there and can upset team morale. Answer - sell them, same as I would sack an employee messing up my company atmosphere. We got a decent price. Same with Torres, minute you don't want to be there then goodbye.
He may have had a verbal agreement on wages form old owners, but then he is pretty stupid when so much money is involved not to sign a contract stipulating that, besides, why do our new owners have to support verbal agreements made by previous owner and previous manager, it's not their problem. Meireles knew club was up for sale, he shouldn't have signed if he wasn't happy with the offer.
Stop the negativity and get back to supporting, some people are just looking for a reason to moan.

Must admit at first I was a bit p***ed off when I heard Raul had gone. Slightly tarnished what has been an excellent transfer window. Then I thought at least it gives the youngsters a chance. Then I read the Chavski rumour page and they are gutted!! I am so made up now. Let's look forward to great season and a big thanks to all of the Ed's and Macca for their tireless patience. Please keep tuning in and support the site throughout the season and not just in the transfer window. Good luck guys.

What a load of s**t! Great business selling Merieles for less than we bought him for after a great first season in the prem! IMO We'll be made to regret that when we need quality in midfield to bring off the bench.

With Gerrard coming back and no europe, we have much less games to play so Raul was gonna rarely get on the pitch, he'd obivously fallen down the pecking order. He wasn't strong into a tackle. He was pissed off about the money so better to get him out than to let him spread discord in the dressing room.
Yes, its a pity he went to Chelsea, and there wasn't a foregin team in for him, but if anything I'm surprised Roman wants to buy off us again, FT and Yossi didn't really work out.
If he'd stayed I'd have been happy but I don't think we've lost too much. Look at bolton preformance and he wasn't near the pitch, if we continue like that we won't miss him too much.

Lets get some perspective on the RM transfer. He wasnt in our starting 11 and (in my opinion) didnt actually ofer that much to the team ethos Kenny is building.
He scored some well timed goals when we needed them last season, but what else can we honestly say he gave us?
We have had an amazing summer and a great day today. Dont be clouded by losing a half-season wonder to Chelski, who have given us at least 2m profit on a 28 year old signed a year ago, who didnt really have much future with us anyway.
In Kenny we Trust.

Gutted to see meireles go, with Joe cole going also I am suprised we didn't bring another winger (maybe sterling will get a run). I will never doubt kenny but around 20 million pounds was brought in today and I'm amazed we haven't brought in an Adam Johnson or a iker munian. Maybe that is the start of his pot for January. to all those posting that we dishonoured our promise to give raul a pay-rise if he had a good season i think he is a great player but just a few points
1. he was stupid in making a word of mouth deal with owners whom were leaving
2.no way should the club bend their knees to one man who wants more money, a lot of better liverpool players were paid well below their market value and stayed because that they loved our club above all money
3. the promise was that if he had a good SEASON not a good 6 games at the end of the season only Gerrard(and maybe martin Kelly) can claim to have played well for the opening half of last season and his season was too plagued with injuries to judge

Come on lads, let's put this Meireles deal in context. Firstly, Raul is far from a great midfielder. Even when he was playing well last season, he'd rarely have the determination to drive the team forward. He was effective when the team was playing well but didn't have the character to drive the team forward.
Secondly, I don't see this deal as significantly strengthening Chelsea. In fact, considering who they might have signed (Modric) they have got a very poor substitute. We should be pleased that Chelsea haven't signed a top-class creative midfielder, and have instead signed a player who, despite a purple patch of goalscoring, was never a great creative influence for us last season.
Thirdly, people saying this deal shows how we are inferior to Chelsea, giving up our best players to them, isn't looking at the bigger picture. Yes we have sold Chelsea a player. But was it a first-teamer? No. Was it a player we were desperate to keep? No. Seeing as Chelsea's solution to their central midfield problem is a player who wasn't even making our first team, I'd say this shows quite a lot about the balance of power between the clubs.
I thought Raul was a good player. But he was never anything more than that. Adam is far more creative and Henderson is far more dynamic. I wish Raul all the best for the future, but I highly doubt he will be the signing that transforms Chelsea's midfield

Now we all know why Kenny was buying so many midfielders. If you look at the bench, we are actually light in midfield. We should have kept either Aquilani or Meireles. Now we are relying on Adam/Lucas/Henderson. Not bad, but top 4 level? Hard to imagine.

I think we need to trust Kenny and DC with the loss of Meireles. Yes, he was - and is - a good player, but I always felt the managment felt he was lacking something. Which is why they've let him go. Believe me, if they were truly convinced about him they would have made sure he was still here now. Raul going to Chelsea is a good bit of business and I see I as positive, cause he was not going to get a game if Gerard is fit. This must mean that contrary to some reports, Gerard will make a full recovery and will be back to his very best, (could this be the best midfield in the EPL?).

Henderson is a sub for the creative players. Maxi and Kuyt are subs for the wing. Spearing is sub for Lucas. Shelvey is there if Kenny feels he deserves a go. Even if all 4 first-choice midfielders are injured we can play:
Maxi--Henderson--Spearing--Kuyt
which is about as good as our first-choice last season.

I think it's a massive mistake selling Meireles to Chelsea.
He gives us options and we play it on the deck as opposed to route one with Carroll.
He links up better with Suarez. He and Suarez turned the Arsenal game.

Will everyone stop panicking over mereilles, the lad can't get in the team now and in a couple of weeks time we've got the best midfield player in the world coming back onto it so their would probably be days where he wouldn't even make it into the matchday squad. What really surprises me is that we didn't ask the deal to involve sturridge. Im a liverpool fan and i think mirelles did the right things...in my opinion he desereved a new contract which he was promised if he played well. He took a pay cut to come to liverpool, gets player of the season and then gets told there will be no contract, in my opinion its a huge loss for us and a stupid business as we have not replaced him. It is believed that Liverpool and chelsea have been negotiating the Meireles deal all day. Chelsea would not meet our demands and therefore Meireles handed in a transfer request.

The second Yossi signs for Arsenal, Merieles hands in a transfer request... not coincidence. They knew we would bring in Yossi if Raul were to leave, they were just petty a didnt want to sell/loan him to us when they paid over £5m for him last season.
They must have already had some contact with Raul, telling him to wait until Yossi signs to hand in a TR, so we are left without our back-up target to replace him. We've been messed about here, I'd say reject the request and put him in the reserves/benched, the cheek of the player.

Meirles for Sturridge seems unlikely. About 20 people posted the it as soon as it got annouced so don't expect any praise. We have just bought a Striker and If anyone comes in it will be a Winger or CAM.

Just watched an interview with DC on LFC tv talking about Coates. He said he has been watching the player for the last 2 years. Just like to say what a great job he has done along with KK and the board bringing in our main targets. Now really looking forward to the rest of the season.

I think there is still a bit of LFC intrest in the transfer window, Not disagreeing with Macca but I think a lot depends on what happens in the midfield roundabout in London-town, ie
Modric, Benayoun, Arteta, Kaka.
Personally I think this might happen, but also could well be a 0 out of 5, time will tell

If Chelsea fail in getting modric and turn their attention to meireiles, then I think Liverpool must be strong and strict. We demand 20-25m or no deal, Chelsea will be forced to spend or they will have to face the fans. We don't need a winger urgently. We have plenty of players who can play on the wing. Kuyt, Downing, Henderson, Rodriguez and even Suarez. The main priority was a striker and centre-back which we have sorted.

Very happy with Liverpool's dealings this summer..but if we can get Bellamy and Johnson (pessimistic though) it will very much be the final links to a great Liverpool squad again.

Benayoun is coming back to Liverpool! A striker is not needed as we can play Kuyt/Carroll/Suarez up front. Benayoun can be played on either wing or CAM.

well althoughthe transfer window is not quite over I would like to say a massive thank you to our new owners who in a short period of time have restored our pride and dignity again in our great club. In less than a year they have :
1.Given us back the King
2. Provide Money to buy better players, allowing us to play the attractive football we were famous for.
3. Looking like they are willing to invest further money on the ground.
All in all a much better year, with the promise of good times ahead!
Responsible owners who have money to spend cos they didn't pay much for the club.. all in all a sound business plan..

Why does it seem like all our rivals who are selling are getting great deals (e.g. Wilson Palacios for 8mill) while our highest priced player out has been Aquilani (for less than that)? Our prized young striker for 4 mill? Are we running a fire-sale? I just hope the fact that we're getting next to nothing for our players is not symptomatic of our negotiating skills in general...

Liverpool are plotting a £9m bid for Barcelona misfit Ibrahim Afellay, with the Dutch starlet playing just a handful of games since moving to the Camp Nou in January. Kenny Dalglish was in the running for the former-PSV midfielder in the last transfer window but Afellay decided to further his career in Spain instead.
But he's had a torrid time since making the switch with Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Mascherano and Keita ahead of him in the midfield pecking order. The Dutchman's lack of action has alerted Dalglish once again, who sees Afellay as having the guile and skill his midfield lacks.
It is thought that a bid of around £9m would be enough to convince Barcelona to sell the player they bought just a few months ago. Afellay is also thought to be keen on a switch as he seeks the first team football he needs to aid his development.
Affelay would be quality but surely it is to late now. I could see Tottenham signing him tbh

If you'd have said to me in Jan that by 1st Sep we'd have got rid of FT, NGog, Poulsen, El Zhar, Degen (hopefully), Krygiakos, Aquilani, Cole, Ayala and Babel and replaced them with Suarez, Carroll, Adam, Downing, Henderson, Coates, Enrique plus potentially 1 or 2 more quality additions later tonight I'd have laughed at you!

Just been looking up Bellamy's stats and in the last 3 seasons he's contributed 47 goals in 81 league matches with goals and assists. In contrast, Kuyt has contributed 52 in 103 league matches. Those 2 would be better back up strikers than Arsenal's and Spurs' by a long chalk, and that's all we need to get into the top 4

We should opt for Sturridge, Zarate, Munian or Negredo, as they are all younger and better quality players. Although obviously not free, they would definitely be of more worth to us in the long run.
I also think we should try and hijack Fulham's move for Bryan Ruiz as he is a really good player and for 10m would be a real coup, we previously had interest but it died down. Him or Affelay on the right wing would complete our new squad nicely.

the Argentine team including Messi has just arrived at Kolkata to play a match against Venezuela and obviously Higuain is with him and he was asked whether he would like to play in EPL and said that he will see what happens in the next couples of months and may a deal could be done with someone in January.
We should throw our hats in the ring for him in Jan when hopefully we would be pushing for the league and more importantly the Champs League.
Was there any genuine interest for Higuain Eds? {Ed001's Note - yes there is interest in Higuain, but Madrid don't want to lose him as of now. Benzema's great form and the worry he won't be the same player he was before he got injured, might cause him to become available in the future. So January could be interesting if he is not playing regularly.}
I imagine all top clubs have interest in Higuain - he's one of the best strikers in world football. Whether that interest will become anything concrete is another matter entirely

Great coverage eds, this is a fantastic day, just getting so many off the wage bill makes me happy, but the players potentially coming in are great. Not the hundreds of names mentioned at the drop of a hat on here, but the ones with genuine potential.
For me the best rumours iv seen today are for Sturridge and Bellamy, 2 great players, Sturridge has the potential to be an English Drogba, I dont htink we need both but both would be great. I see Coleman rumours have died down, I would have respected a move for him, a decent player at RB/RW, which wold open up Johnson for LB and Kuyt for ST.

I don't have any news about them but personally I don't see Wilson or Shelvey leaving permanently. Shelvey is only 19, by the time he's 25 Gerrard will probable have retired and Adam will be 31. He can force his way into the team. Danny Wilson is also only 19, Carragher will retire in a few years so Wilson will be one of four defenders, which includes injury-prone Agger. Just wanna say regardless of what happens for the rest of the day, every single liverpool fan should be thrilled with how the summer has gone, most if not all the fringe players gone replaced with solid proven premiership players. I for one am delighted and proud of the job king kenny and damien commoli have done. Also big thanks to all the eds and the man himself macca. Have thoroughly enjoyed reading every1's posts this summer aside from jonjon 6 LOL. Anyway heres to a great future for beloved club. Thanks again every1.

The thing is, in the wing and striker positions we have a few good young players. Raheem Sterling will be challenging for the first team within 2 seasons if he continues improving at the rate he is. Adam Morgan has a great scoring record for the reserves, and Toni Silva, Vilyan Bijev and Krizstian Adorjan are all thought to have the potential to challenge for a first team spot. Signing older players as back-ups will allow the younger players to be phased into the squad within 2-3 years, as they naturally replace the older players

Johnson and Sturridge would set us back at least 40 million, probably more because I highly doubt Chelsea would sell Sturridge to anyone right now. Why would Milner leave City, where he can sit on the bench and collect high wages, to do the same thing here but earn less? And Mauro Zarate has a poor scoring record for a striker. We have the first team pretty much sorted so we need back-ups and impact subs who won't hinder the development of the promising youth. Bellamy and Benayoun fit the bill

Gospel truth there will be no incoming transfers today,the club are more than happy with the business we have completed and there is no need to buy anybody to sit on the bench,we now have great cover for all positions and a host of brilliant young players coming through.There is a possibility of Danny Wilson going on a season long loan to Leeds and Jonjo Shelvey going the same way.
I know replies will say we need another striker but we have many adaptable players who can stand in if there is an injury crisis.

He is fit now,and there's a reason he cannot get into the chelsea team! Benayoun is at least twice the player that Bentley is. Yossi is an incredibly clever footballer who I would gladly see come back. Bentley was a talented youngster who never progressed and has gone backwards

It's count down folks and as we know this part of the transfer window is totally unpredictable. I have to be honest and say I really don't if we will sign anyone else and if we do, I can't guess who. At a guess I would say there is a good chance that Zarate, Afellay, Johnson or Sturridge could be brought in. I think there is a chance of two of the above mentioned signing, but one will be the probable outcome. The most likely outcome of course, is KK and DC will bring in one two players no one has mentioned.
I have no doubt in my mind, yhat starting from now right up to the deadline this site will be unindated with feasable and complete and utter BS rumours.
Milner is one of those BS rumours, which are doing the rounds.
My personal wish is we sign Afellay and Sturridge. But we will wait and see.
I am new to to the site and have realyy enjoyed the last few weeks reading and writing post and after today i will not return to the site untill December2011.

Absolute rubbish. Metersacker is not particularly sought after. He is an ok player, but past his best, and clumsy with his feet.
If you are an LFC fan, you should appreciate that the club have just bought Seb Coates, the Uruguayan young player of the season, who is 20 years old, and 6 foot 5" (an inch shorter than Metersacker). We are reported to have spent 7 million on him. Metersacker would not have been a 'class buy' in any way shape of form. Arsenal have bought him under pressure more than anything else.
To the inflated price tags, the players that have been bought are worth the money. I agree with many who say that Carroll shouldn't have cost 35million, but thats how much he was worth to Newcastle, so thats how much we paid.
Cut out the 'we always overpay crap'. Go and watch the repeats of the Copa America, and look at the comparisons between Coates and Metersacker.

Looking forward to a few suprises today (i hope) have'nt been this optimistic for a long while come on liverpool!
Whether we do or dont buy anyone isnt the issue for me.. im dead excited at the prosepct of being able to buy anyone!.. and also to know that it wont just be dross to fill the squad numbers but would be a classy player that fits the strength in depth we are building.

Ed009,totally agree. I'm one of Carra's biggest fans and rated rated him very very highly as most other Liverpool fans do. But Coates just by his C.V their is no doubt this guy has the attitude and mindset to get in and nail down a first team spot pretty soon. Just to come into the team in the Copa and perform to such a high level from the get go would've been admirable for a 25 year old with a good few caps behind him, never mind a 20 year old just starting out on his international career. Just hope and prey it doesn't come on the back of a shock result,or a freak injury but who am i to start being negative. I'm more then sure the K.K will make his choice at the right time and once this guy is ready to be unleashed which i think will be sooner rather then later all the centre forwards in the Prem better watch out,. Selling raul this late in window will be illadvised.
Infact I can confirm that only hold up in ngog deal is that kenny wants to first sought out replacement then let him go.
I think same will happen to raul he will only be sold if we find a replacement.
From what I have heard of steve.g his injury can easily. Come back so we have to be vary carefull with him.

Hi, this is not a rumour, but its the only part of the site i read, but i just wanted to say that during this summers transfer window i have come to this site every evening to read what is happening inside our club, i've come every nite, last thing before bed and it never fails to help me sleep, im sure I, like many, will spend almost all day on here and sky sports news on the tv, so before the day gets hectic for the Ed's and for Macca, i would just like to say thank you to them for the service they provide, the platform for us to come here and share and for the witty/comedic replies to those who deserve it and there knowledgable replies to those who ask politely. They all take a lot of their own time to provide us with this, and we should all be thankful. I would also like to say thank you to everyone else who comes here with their rumours, you've all made it an enjoyable summer! Thank you all.

Here we go again but I don't think anybody is talking s**te. So far King Dongs assessment of Carroll is mostly correct. He hopes, as I also do, that the reason for his poor showing so far is a fitness issue and I hope it all improves for him.

Red Ollie who told you Coates wont be a regular,might not be to start with but he hasn't come here to sit on the bench and pick splinters out of his asse. 4th choice centre back, somehow dont think it'll be as cut and dried as that. Anyhow if he was his ambition to go to a club to become wanted the 4th choice centre half spot, he might've well of gone to City and more money being a 4th choice bench warmer and earned a few more quid. I must say that I am over the moon with all the transfer activity of incoming and outgoing players since KK and DC got there heads together. We have improved our team by some distance in the last 8 months to a team that can now challenge on all fronts. And amazingly in the next 24hrs we will have managed to get rid of all the deadwood and cleared 100's of thousands off the wage bill each week and month.
I for one had my doubts on Comoli when he first arrived wondering how he would be able to work alongside a manager but I can honestly say that since KK took over the both of them have done a tremendous job in rebuilding our club. I would also like to say a big thankyou to our owners for backing both KK and DC throughout the last 8 months
Today's signing of Coates is fantastic for the club, I believe we have signed the bargain of the summer. I believe Coates will be to Liverpool what Vidic was to utd when he first arrived only better, Coates will become a world class defender in the next few years...

Anyone else miffed at the Santon deal at Newcastle, I thought we had eyes on him at the start of the summer. Not taking anything away from Enrique, but Santon has 5 years on him and International caps.

Hi eds/Macca, doing a sterling job providing us lfc fans with decent information. However I for one do think that we have made a mistake in buying Carroll, let alone paying £35m for him. I know he had a few injury problems last season but even in the games he has played this season so far, he looks slow, clumsy and cannot control the ball for sh*t! Does he still have any fitness issue? If not, and I know Macca has said that we are perhaps going to look to buy another striker next January, I think it would be ludicrous to wait till then to buy another striker. If suarez gets injured, we would have to rely on Carroll and kuyt. Ok kuyt is not a bad option but Carroll? In some ways, I am hoping that he is still having fitness issues which would explain his poor performances so far this season.
On another note, I have heard from a reliable source linked to the club who I cannot mention that we are looking for another pacy attacking player who can play on either the wings or as a striker and will be trying to get him before the deadline tomorrow, otherwise it will be in January.
King Dong YNWA {Ed001's Note - there is defo a plan to get one more attacking player in, if possible. As for Carroll, he was not a player I wanted us to buy, but he does do a very good job for the team. He is big and strong and is a fantastic finisher.}
You have to be a bluenose or a manc, with your obvious superior football knowledge to Dalglish, the man who signed Andy Carroll, and your support for a Liverpool player is just what he needs to boost his confidence. Do you not know players have computers, and, contrary to popular belief, the brains to actually use them.
