Can we talk full-backs? I know we have issues in a few other positions (not least in the centre of defence), but it feels to me like the best way to strengthen the team at the moment would be by sorting out LB & RB positions. In today's game, these positions are absolutely critical and unfortunately we've been in a mess here all season.

The only regular starter, Glen Johnson, has been performing poorly - due primarily, I fear, to age slowing him down rather than a temporary loss of form or attitude. We've been really unfortunate with injuries to others, but I'm not sure any of the contenders have completely convinced:
- Enrique has suffered periodic dips in form (and Carra has alluded to problems with his positioning).
- I've actually been rather more impressed by Cissokho than some of the other posters on this site. I thought he played well against City and maybe just needs a decent injury-free run - but I accept he still needs to prove himself.
- I'm not quite sure what's going on with Kelly, but he hasn't looked too accomplished on the rare occasions he's got on.
- Flanno has been great at times when he's come in, but is still pretty raw and not the best going forward.
- The young ones (Wisdom, Robinson etc.) are clearly deemed not ready, so are out on loan or not in the first team squad.
- None of our main centre backs (Sakho, Agger, Skrtl, Toure) ever looks remotely comfortable when forced to shift to full-back.

Much as it would be great to bring in some star performers in attack, I think if we had a couple of reliable performers in the full-back positions, it could massively strengthen the team's cohesion and help paper over the cracks in midfield and centre of defence. I would therefore be much more excited by the prospect of signing one or two full-backs with real quality (Montoya? I have no idea).

What do others think our strategy should be here?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

1. Johnsons form has nothing to do with age, its his attitude.
2. Enrique and Kelly have not been fully fit for a long time.
3. Cissokho hasn't impressed me at all, i'd rather play Brad Smith.
4.Id play Ryan McLoughlan against Oldham.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think you make a very good point but we have some great fulls coming through and the club must be careful not to block there development after all they tend to harbour way more passion for the club than bought players plus they remain on lower wages for longer

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agreed. IMO full backs are in most priority.
A right full back and a mascherano kind of midfielder are all we need IMO

Agree0 Disagree0

I do agree we shouldn't block the development of the young players coming through - and we do seem to have some good ones coming up in these positions. The problem is, I'm not sure any of them are ready yet. A RB would be my priority.

Agree0 Disagree0

To push our chances of a top four finish we need to have a solid team for the next 6 months. That means a regular back four. Even if we buy 2 decent fullbacks in january it won't block younger players from developing as next season the youth will get their chance due to the increase in fixtures. What we do know is that currently none (except flanno) are ready yet and it is now that we need fullbacks.

Fabio Coentrao and Martin Montoya should be top of the list.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

Firstly happy New Years! Secondly would like to give credit to flannagan! Never thought before this season he'd make it but put in very solid performances against Everton and spurs and is looking a capable fullback. But for every positive he highlights, it brings up a negative for GJ! I think GJ is actually a talented player but he annoys me to no end. He just seems to have lost interest or not care in the slightest. Hate to have a go at any player fortunate enough to wear a red jersey but the things he does to annoy me and all of them seem to be from laziness! Against Cardiff (I think) he was played through on goal and a terrible first touch stopped him from scoring, which for a FB a chance to score should be vital, and for defending he just seems to have lost interest. Don't see how after mid table obscurity the chance of fighting for a title doesn't motivate him! Hate to have a go but currently the only player at LFC I want out!

Agree0 Disagree0

Coentrao.really?!?!?!? Have you watched him play?Or are you just thinking, ''he plays for Madrid, he must be good''

Agreed Johnson has not been performing. He just looks like he dodesn't want to be at the club any more. Any truth in that we rejected to renew and keep him at his current wage, hence the sulking?

Personally I want Johnson gone in the summer and a new right back brought in as Kelly is a centre back and injury worry, and wisdom doesn't understand the game at right back well enough.

I think we need posters like Osmo, he gives his opinion and it may be against the majority of other poster's but that's OK, it helps give some perspective to this site, agree or disagree with him that's OK too! I happen to agree with some of what he say's and disagree with other things he say's, I mean by that BR is human and will make mistakes, some of the players he brought in were mercenaries in my opinion, and some just could not hack it in the EPL, BR is doing his best, and we are an improved team no doubt, BR was not my choice because he lacked experience and I wanted a big name manager, but it did not happen, so get behind BR and back him 100%, if he fails it will not be through his lack of effort.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I can see some of his points but we are Liverpool, leave the pessimism to the other side of the park.

My new years resolution is to cut down my addiction.

Over the past few years it has caused me some serious problems.

It is not just the occasional hit, it is sometimes 20 times a day and consequently I spend less time with my family than I really should. So as you can understand it is a serious predicament to be in.

Therefore, As we come to the end of 2013 and approach a fresh new year I vow to cut down my addiction to this site. Rather than checking in 20 times a day I will cut it down to 19 ;-)

Happy new year everyone!

Ozone,

I struggle to comprehend your negativity towards Rodgers. I can only imagine that you were against him before he had managed a game and refuse to change your opinion.

This time last season we were in 10th place and 21 points adrift of 1st, this year it is 6 points. We have 11 more points than this time last year which was the gap from top 4 last year at the end of the season and all the top 7 bar United need to come to anfield. We have scored a staggering 84 goals this calendar year, more than any other club in Bpl and 29 of these have been by Suarez so clearly the rest of the team is contributing. We play great football and are building for the future, the progress is there for everyone to see.

To call yourself a supporter is nothing short of laughable given that you bring nothing but negativity to this site and have in fact taken delight in our failures as you seem to think it vindicates your opinion towards Rodgers.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Save your breath man, Ozone is one of those doom-mongers.

Agree0 Disagree0

Reality son. Kenny would have done far better given another twelve months nd the pot Brendans squandered. Just explain to me Aspas, Cissoko, Aspas, Borini, Sahin, Illori. Fiddle around with the stats as much as you like kid. The facts are we've taken 5 points from a possible 18 from 6 of top 8 away. No European distractions and out the league cup early doors. Don't p, ay the 'they have to come to Anfield' card, as the same tems will beat us at Anfield whilst Rodgers utilises 80% of Kenny's team and leaves his signings out on loan or on the bench. He comes in 18 months ago brings in Allen, Borini, Sahin, drops Downing and Hendo for 6 months then puts them back in. This year he buys Alberto, Assiadi, Illori and Aspas. Three of them unless and Illoris missing in action. He takes Moses and Cisdoko on loan. Drops Cissoko and resorts to another Kenny find in Flannagan and now realises Sterlings better than Moses. Reportedly in for Salah and Tello whilst having Ibe in the background(who no doubt he'll resort to when he realises Salah and Tello can't cope with premier league demands). Brendan's a good youth coach, that's his level, he's not a good manager in my eyes.

Agree0 Disagree0

£35 million Andy Carroll on one player and I was a supporter of Kenny and wanted him to stay. Puts your £40 million on all those players into perspective. As you say Ozone look at it objectively kid!

Agree0 Disagree0

Coutinho, Allen, Sakho, Mingolet! 80% you say? I think only Henderson is the only player Kenny purchased, the rest were here or in Suarez case already to be purchased. More nonsense Ozone.

Agree0 Disagree0

Reality? The reality is that Rodgers is cleaning up after kk's mess. For a start, you listed aspas twice. Cissoko and sahin were loans so costs are minimal. If you want to talk about squandered money how about downing, Carroll, Adam, Coates, Shelley That racks up 74mil.

You call us blind and that I am hiding behind statistics, here's another stat for you. You are the only person on this site who is against Rodgers, you alone.

Agree0 Disagree0

Irish Rover. You know as well as I do, 35mill on Carroll wasn't how it was in reality. Torres did the dirty and it was a panic buy. Similar type scenario with Brendon when we were left with one striker for six months and ended up in the bottom half of the table for a while and got thumped 3 nil at west Brom first game of the season. Have you used your remote control yet kid?

Agree0 Disagree0

Excuses excuses Ozone. There was a plethora of forwards he could have purchased and they didn't cost £35 million and wouldn't have been injured too. Throw Downing into the mix, what about Charlie Adam? Will I carry on? Its laughable that you call Flanno and Sterling as Kenny's players. Objective till the end Ozone.

Agree0 Disagree0

Another one Coates? £7 million! As you say " missing in action". Comical

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Dec 2013 19:58:23
Ozone doesn't know what a squad it. It needs to be 11 £25 million players or nothing!

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Dec 2013 20:07:02
All the players you mention are players we either loaned or players who were cheap, something else you moan about.
We'll get a return on 9/10 of the players you mentioned, and around 90% of the investment i'd wager.
B.R won't ever drop as much money on rubbish as Kenny did. I love KK but he wasted loads of cash.
Where's the Carroll return? Downing? The two combined Covers Downings fee. Where were you after the spurs game?
Also, what was KK point tally second half of the season? Relegation form I do believe.

Agree0 Disagree0

That's it ozone, your still sore bout Kenny getting the sack that's all. grow up mate.
Or your a troll who just happens to pop on here when results aren't going the way we would like.
Hope you find happiness in 2014 Ozone.

Agree0 Disagree0

Carrol downing adam all shocking

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozone what are ya doing to yourself?i do not wanna be abusive in any way but you seem lost for sense every club in england was laughing at Liverpool after commoli/kenny buys it was awful.give it a rest.your views are so wrong that the only conclusion is that your trying to stir it up.you repeatedly mud up your name on this site repeatedly.check your beard you got to big big piece of chicken in there.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'll repeat Irish rover, have you pressed the remote control yet? I'm still waiting for your reply regarding Phil losing possession. I'm not interested in armchair stats from you lot. Brendan's a youth coach. He hasn't got a clue in the transfer market, he's academic. How can you lot justify Cissoko, Aspas, Sahin, alberto, Illori and Borini. Mig/ Reina different qualities. Sturridge and Sakho good buys. Allen £15 mill? There's far better water carriers out there at that price. The rest, Sh**e including Phil, to lightweight with no final ball. Inter knew it that's why he couldn't get it. Italians don't try to re-invent the game. Keep up the good work with your stats lads. You'll never re-invent the wheel.

Agree0 Disagree0

After reading Ozone for a while it seems easy to see where he is coming from:
Dalglish = good
Anyone else = bad

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozone the top line of our post sums you up. Kenny would not have got rid of Carroll. We would have had a 'lot of money' passenger. At least Sturridge scores plenty when he is fit.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozone Ill explain all the players you mentioned.
1. Aspas. Hard working, technically gifted Spanish forward who is a good finisher. Needs to bulk up, get stronger and will be a success. Michael Laudrup wants to sign him, He probably knows a little more than you.
2. Cissokho. We needed a left back. He was the best option available at the right price at the time.
3. Aspas again. Give him time. even Thierry Henry took a year.
4. Borini. One of the top U21 players for Italy, an eye for goal, Brendan has seen close up what he can do. He lost confidence because our shirt is one of the heaviest to wear. (possibly because of pessimists like you)
5.Sahin. Top player, wrong attitude. Wasnt happy with the position he was asked to play.
6.Ilori. One of the most highly rated young CB in Europe. If you knew the teams/coaches who tried to sign him, you would be amazed that we managed to sign him.
This year we did get Alberto, who will feature a lot more next season as he progresses and settles down. Assaidi was scouted before BR and was not his signing.
Salah would improve our squad dramatically, and Ibe needs another 12-18 months before he can become a fixture in the team.
Brendans a good coach full stop. Its down to the players whether old or young to take it on board.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well at least tonight you have been found out for what you stand for Ozone. A bit of a mistic meg who knows Kenny would have done better given another year. A poster who has no come back or reasonable explaination for Kennys bad buys but happy to critisize Rodgers buys. You are a joke Ozone. You overall knowledge of football is limited at worst and naive at best. The sad thing being is that I don't think you are some young turk who could be excused for his silly posts. I would guess you would be 40 plus with your admiration of Kenny (as I do). Your new years resolution should be is try and be more objective. Happy new year Kid!

Agree0 Disagree0

87red,

Costs are minimal on loans? The Sahin experience cost us near on £4mill.

Agree0 Disagree0

Irish Rover,

'your knowledge of football is limited at worst and naive at best', this coming from a kid who thinks Chelsea's first goal came from some good interplay by their midfield.

Chiefs out, are you an LFC scout as if your are with your player overviews, I see why we've squandered £40 mill.

Aspas - lightweight, weak one dimensional load of rubbish who couldn't hit a barn door.

Borinin - as per above, struggling to old a regular pot at Sunderland.

Cissoko - just not built for the job of full back with them legs. Daydreamer constantly found out or ball watching.

Sahin - couldn't hack physical demands of EPL.

Ilori - didn't need him plus I think he's AWOL as no ones seen him since he arrived.

Alberto - is he a winger or is he an attacking central mid? Firstly he has no pace and has a stiff neck so his movements not right for a winger. He hasn't the strength, vision or technical requirements for the central role. So what does he do and why did we buy him?

Agree0 Disagree0

Well I for one agree with Ozone. Bring back Kenny or Souness, Rafa or Roy; there again let's keep Brenda and let's waste another 20/25 million on dross. Bring on the Derby. COYB

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozone,

Yes, costs on loans are minimal in comparison to the 70 odd mil kenny wasted. Everyone was so excited when we were on to sign sahin. This kid was player of the season in Germany at 20 years old before Real Madrid picked him up. He didn't work out but he was definitely worth a shot and by loaning him we didn't spend the 15 mil Madrid would have wanted to sign him permanently

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozone, out of curiosity have you seen Sahin play for Dortmund over the last 18 months? He's been fantastic, I mean BRILLIANT. He was finding his feet at Liverpool, then got injured and we cancelled his loan.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks for all your polite and positive replies to my post right at the bottom. ie about Brendan Rogers wasting cash on 5 or 6 average players (40 - 50 million) during the last transfer window. If I can remind you all. I did point this out at the time and suggested that Brendan might be better signing 2 real top notch players for say 25 million each. At the time I got a bit of a slagging (only off 1 or 2 of you. the majority were polite). I guess you are doing well under him and when you consider the 80 million Spurs have spent, then I think you guys have come out better overall. I just think that a couple of higher quality signings would have been better for you. I think you have enough numbers, so increasing the quality sounds better. I understand the comments about players wanting Champions League and maybe that is the crux. And we Blues have had that problem for years. Unfortunately C.L. = loads of cash and better players.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You seem to be forgetting the summer we needed to try strengthen a lot of positions for small money if we had the squad were we only needed 2 players I see no reason why we would splash out but we have less money to get more players ect

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Dec 2013 18:24:02
But the squad isn't big enough. As evidenced this past week.
It's easy to criticise but we cannot yet have a squad full of superstars, squad players need to be players who can do a job when needed, not someone who's going to replace a Gerrard/Sturridge.
My theory is, if BR felt the squad was big enough, he would have bought said players.
We have been letting players go to, it's impossible to replace mediocre players with talent and plough money into the squad at the same time unless your name is city.
Just my opinion, but I think people need to see the bigger picture. Get a nucleus, build around it.
It can't be done overnight!

Agree0 Disagree0

Right, yeah, our numbers are fine. That's why we had a 16 year old and a 19 year old on our subs bench against Chelsea. We need 2 or 3 top quality players in *addition* to the 5 or 6 squad players we bought. It'll take a bit of time but we'll get there.

Hi Eds and Reds. All this talk of Salah coming in seems to be accompanied by assumptions that Raheem Sterling will be the one who makes way.

Could it be that Both him and Sterling would play, one on each wide position, with one of our current midfield trio being replaced with Coutinho in a more central role?

I just think that with Coutinho's preference for the centre, and him being more effective there than on the flank it seems to make more sense.

Not sure what that would mean for the likes of Hendo, Gerrard and Allen though.

Have a good new year all.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - it is that he prefers Sakho to Agger, Skrtel to Toure. He wants one left footer and one right footed centre half. I still expect Coates to go and Skrtel is not safe, even though he is currently in the team.}

Id cash in on Skrtel while we can, make Toure first choice for prem games and have Kelly, Sama and Lloyd Jones for early cup games.

Would just like to post my thoughts on the current team.

Going forward, we are now one of the best teams in the league. Shown buy the goal tally for 2013 and having one of the best strikers in the world. We are a constant threat in most games and have begun to dominate possession and play the style I believe BR wants us to play. It is very attractive too, I have really enjoyed watching us play this season.

The middle of the park is still clearly an area we aren't fully complete. As good as Henderson has been, I don't think he is capable of being the midfielder we need. The same with Allen. However, they are, in my eyes, perfect squad players. They have quality to better the lower teams and cup games. Although the both seem to lack the pace, power and presence to beat the teams such as City and Chelsea.

The defence is also another area, despite the large amount of investment, looks rather venerable. Personally, I share the same opinion as Ed001 and believe Skrtel is a large part to this. We never look organised at set piece and would love to see Toure and Sakho play together. I have been VERY impressed with Flanaghan, he has really improved and always looked solid when playing. He seems to be addind an attacking dimension to his game too. However I will say this, I really wish that Johnson would just put in 100% He has the ability to be one of the best full backs in the league, but he never seems to try. He also makes rather poor decisions going forward and concedes possession too often. His laziness also contributes to his lack of positioning and drags other players (Lucas, Skrtel) out of position. I would like to see us play Kelly a little more, although I know his injury was a poor one and club want to protect him.

Just my thoughts so far, comments are always welcome.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I disagree only on Henderson and Allen. While I admit that they are not at the level of Yaya Toure, I think as a team, Allen and Henderson have been very effective and will only get better.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you with most of your opinions but I completely disagree with your opinions on Hendo. I think he can become one of the midfielders in the league with his attributes. BR said he was playing at 70% against Chelsea and you could tell because he was his usual self. Against city he was solid as our midfield and city's midfield seemed to kill each other off so he wasn't very noticeable. Allen is still pretty young and still has a chance to make it as a Liverpool player so I wouldn't write him off yet, but at the moment he seems best as a squad player.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cannot agree on Johnson. Even if he
EVER puts 100% in - he just cannot defend well enough for the top of the table

Agree0 Disagree0

While I agree they have been very good this season, I think they lack the quality to take us further. If you look at the other teams around us (City, Chelsea, Arsenel) They aren't quite as good as the likes of Ozil, Corzola, Silva, Toure, Mata, Oscar, Etc. I think I may have been a little harsh on them, but I still don't think they are the players to take us to where want to be.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would also like to add that Henderson and Allen are both young. So have a chance to develop into top class players. Henderson has made fantastic progress too.

Just saw some of the videos of Salah. Well those videos show good stuff of him alone and from that BR's going to love him. He's amazingly quick, can break into attack almost instantly, him and Coutinho would make a deadly combination and don't forget Sturridge to come back as well. I don't know about his work rate, defensively. He's got good ball control. He's easy on the eye and can make something out of nothing, with some moments of brilliance. He's got a decent shot in him as well. Well these are some of his good aspects that I've assessed, true to my knowledge. I would like to know more about the players, cause he does not play in a really challenging league(?) which is not telecast in my country.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Salah is very quick and direct. He likes to cut in from the wings and take a shot on target and works hard for the team.

Ball control, however, could be one of the areas he could improve upon; similar to heading.

Agree0 Disagree0

I noticed Salah against spurs then once I saw we were linked with him watched him against Chelsea in the second group game they played. Thought he looked a very good player, was quick, good feet and creative. Also added a nice goal to win the game towards the end of the match. tended to operate wide but did move about the pitch and looked like he'd suit our style of play alongside saurez, sturridge, coutinho and sterling. Would probably get into XI depending on form and would add good depth and competition for places

Agree0 Disagree0

AG, maybe your talking about close control rather than ball control(?) Maybe am totally wrong here but from what I've seen, he taps the ball really far during his first touch, but almost always matches it with his pace, like he means to do it. When he does control he does it immaculately. But spot on in the heading department.

Happy New Year to all my fellow reds and the Eds who do a fantastic job despite being unappreciated at times.

Just one rant if I may:

Jose Mourinho. Once a breath of fresh air but now an acrid smell of unmentionables. his attack on Suarez is too low class even for him. HE IS NOT SPECIAL! In Italy they saw through his BS because Italians are masters at playacting themselves (with respect), in Spain they saw through him too. He wanted the ManU job and his shameful behaviour and comments, almost begging for the job after Real beat ManU 'the best team lost etc. ) was too embarrassing for even him. Chelsea fans tend to forget that he 'cried' when he wasn't given the ManU job! But, he calls Chelsea 'home' and Chelsea fans adore him. Says a lot about Chelsea fans that do. the man is full of it and his comments about Suarez just proves my point. I am glad he is making such remarks as he is beginning to expose himself and the B.S. myth that he is special in any way. Spending millions and millions does not make you the special one. Ah forget the silly t--t!
Sorry everyone, Happy new year to all of you and here's hoping 2014 will be a great year for our GREAT club.
Love to all.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Completely agree, he made a big song and dance about players diving yet he has actively encouraged players to do it. here is a brief list of Moron-ho's favourite cheats and divers.

1) Drogba
2) Ronaldo
3) Robben
4) Joe Cole
5) Hazard
6) Oscar
7) Pepe
8) The Porto team of 2003/2004.

I could go on, but the point is he is a hypocrite of the highest order who talks out of his arse so much he has had to start feeding his food directly into his nipsy.

If he wants to know what special is then he should look at Shankly, Paisley, Busby, Stein, Rinus Michels and as much as it pains me to say it Ferguson.

All of the above were special, Moron-ho isn't fit enough to wipe there arses.

He will invariably be sacked and the Premier League will be a better place for it.

Intrigued by our interest in both salah and tello. Maybe we're in for both. Maybe tello is a decoy to stop salah's agents messing us around. Maybe tello is back-up to salah if we fail to land the egyptian. I'd like to think we're in for both as it would enhance our attacking options immensely. One thing's for sure, our rivals across the park have stolen a march over us with the quality of loanees they've signed recently. Here's hoping.

Many of you describe Glen Johnson as good going forward, but not the best defender.

I would disagree. I think he is poor going forward and even worse defending. Our attacking style requires fullbacks to get beyond the opposing defenders and deliver a cross or pass from the wide positions. Why does Johnson take the ball and run at defenders then freeze up and give away possession? That means Skrtel has to cover for him Lucas gets dragged out of position and we have to try and survive an unnecessary attack from the opposition. Once or twice you can give him the benefit of the doubt but not almost every game for the past year or so.

Having said this, he is still seen as one of England's most reliable right backs and will probably be Hodgson's first choice at the world cup. Therefore, there will still be clubs interested in him and we should get what we can now and let him go.

Martin Montoya would fit in perfectly. He is young and will be available for a low fee due to his contract being up in the summer, so for me, It is a no brainer.

As for the other fullback position we have missed Enrique and his ability going forward, and we desperately need another top left back for that position as Cissokho hasn't been impressive.

As we know Rodgers and FSG want to build a young squad that is good enough to compete now and for many years to come. Therefore, the best left back currently available in the market is Fabio Coentraõ. He has barely kicked a ball this season and is looking for a new challenge away from Madrid. He is only 25 and fits our attacking style perfectly. For around £10m, again it is a no brainer.

I've always thought people here were being too harsh on Jonno. Up until this season, he's always been okay defensively in terms of tracking, making covering runs, reading the danger etc. when he's actually been in position. So it's not so much that he always bad defensively, as much as you make a trade - You have the most attacking right back in the league, but he will get caught out of position more because he's so attack-minded. And Rafa, Kenny, Brendan and Roy have all seemed to be content to make that trade.

But he's undeniably having a poor season and both ends of the pitch. His defending, even when positioned defensively, has not been good enough, he's dribbled down blind alleys too often, and he's not delivered any telling contributions that I can remember in the opposition third. And with a natural winger in Sterling now re-established in the first team and Ibe potentially for the future, there's a question mark over whether we need to trade some defensive solidity to have Jonno's attacking instincts and ability to take people on anyway, even if he was in top form. Certainly if we had everyone fit, I'd like to see Flanno play at right back with Enrique at left back.

As for signing someone my ideal option would be Seamus Coleman, but that'll never happen. Haven't seen Montoya play so I can't comment on him.

I completely agree on Johnson!

Hello Ed001 - You replied to a poster earlier that we are looking at Full-backs, CMs and Wingers and clearly Salah and Will Hughes are on the radar. Will Hughes feels like a 'one for the future' as does the already acquired Luis Alberto. Then of course we have the likes of Robinson on loan and Kelly on the bench (who when I first saw him I though 'potential future captain). I'm rambling. so my question; are these players we are looking for again 'ones for the future' or are they guys to help us to achieve top4 this season?

Also heard that there is a bit of an issue with Kelly attitude wise - any truth in this, or is his lack of game time just due to him being worked slowly back in after injury?

Once again, great site, thanks for your patience and your insight and happy new year.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - we are looking for both players for the future and ones to step in now and improve the team. The hope is to buy players who can improve the team and be for the future too, such as Salah.

As far as I am aware, there has been no issues with Kelly attitude wise, though he does want to play first team football. I keep getting told we are just being careful to ensure he doesn't suffer long term issues, as he is young and had a number of niggles.}

"No imminent transfer's" according to BR.
But the press and internet alive with rumours Salah is all but done and dusted and Tello will sign on loan later this week because of his lack of playing time at Barca.
I wonder if there is a bit of showmanship going on here or if these deals are not as close to completion as the press/internet would have us believe?
Whatever happens in the coming few weeks I fully trust BR and his staff and know that whoever comes in will be for the good of the team.
With some of our better players to come back from the treatment room I think a top 4 finish is still well within our grasp. And with a little more luck than we have had even higher.
We have an easier 2nd half to the campaign as regards our home fixtures so let's keep everything crossed and that come May we are still up there fighting for the EPL crown.
Happy and prosperous new year to Eds and all on here.

I see the Tello rumours are being thrown about again. BR obviously likes the player. I'd put all my eggs in one basket and sort this defence out.
Our strikers are awesome and our midfield is very exciting to say the least. We score every game but the defence is all over the place. Hope to god (fowler) we sort it out this January. This team should be certain top 4!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Our midfield is still the same problem it was at the start of the season. It lacks the quality required to win the league in my opinion.

I taught our midfield was better than city when we played them against Chelsea we looked tired need to add to our team is all

Excuse my ignorance but how good is Tello as compared to let's say Sterling?

And if we got him and salah BR clearly wants to play with 2 wingers so where does that leave SAS as they can't both play in a true 4-3-3.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

My guess is in BRs preferred formation Sturridge would be up top with Suarez off to the left and sterling or Tello to the right, this does mean of Course That Coutinho Or Hendo may be dropped :/, still depth in the squad isn't something I mind

The name 'Coutinho' makes one think of typical Brazilian brilliance, filled with flair and imagination. So I genuinely wonder, is our number ten benefitting from this. He was outstanding last season, with three goals and five assists in thirteen matches, but he has failed to impress me this campaign. Coutinho does drive us forwards, which is very important, and clearly has ability, but he is, at times, our most frustrating player. He gives away the ball far too much through over- ambitious passes, flicks, shots and dribbles. Although I am sure Rodgers wants talented players in his team, I think he wants them to be disciplined and play to his style; if the through ball isn't on, Rodgers would prefer the player to recycle possession rather than try it anyway. In fairness to Coutinho, he is only twenty- one, and looks a promising player for the future, but in recent games has been outshone by the magnificent Raheem Sterling. Coutinho has only contributed two goals and one assist in fourteen games, stats that are not magnificent for a player touted as the new Kaka, whereas Sterling, at the tender age of nineteen, in the same number of games, has three goals and two assists. Perhaps our young winger is more deserving of the praise that seems to be heaped on Philippe Coutinho, until the Brazilian's performances sufficiently improve.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Coutinho is playing exactly how BR is asking him to and will be one of the first names on his team sheet, the weight of his passes lately haven't been what he wants, but he knows that more than any of us, he's a grafter.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think the reason coutinho hasn't shine recently is mainly because he is playing out of his best position and probably has something to do with the injury as well.

I do agree sterling deserves praise but I don't think coutinho deserves criticise on the other hand.

IMO the only player deserves criticise is glen for his poor work ethic

Agree0 Disagree0

With sturridge back soon coutinho will blossom again watch

Agree0 Disagree0

Perhaps you just support them both

Agree0 Disagree0

He is also only 21. Don't know about you but I still had stuff to learn at 21.

Agree0 Disagree0

If you watch the match, you will see that most managers push their left back directly onto him. Much like phil Neville on Bale 3 years ago. The idea is not to allow him to turn and face the opposition goal. This is making it harder for him to be effective. His through balls work best with sturridge for the added pace he brings. Suarez's pace is somewhat ovverrated by most pundit and the through balls coutinho plays suarez does sometime struggle to latch onto.

He gave away the ball cheaply once or twice vs chelsea, but i'd rather him try a forward pass to Suarez who may do a bit of magic, than give it to Agger at left back (my heart was in my mouth every time he had posession at LB)

Agree0 Disagree0

Tobiwan, I said in my post that he was only 21. And I'm not saying he doesn't still have stuff to learn, but a lot of people are acting as if he's already world class. Yes, he is playing out of position, and he's young, but if he was as good as everyone seems to think he is, he'd still shine.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree BigRedF, this is the problem with technical over elaborate players. They over egg the pudding with skills and consequently the final ball tends to get rushed. Either he attempts to deliver to early or to late depending on his footwork or balance. We will get the same with Salah. Rodgers encourages our full backs to push on yet plays Phil on the wing knowing he's susceptible to giving the ball away. We dodge the bullets in the main when he's advanced central but get caught out when he's in the left as it leaves full back exposed. This very thing happened against Chelsea for the Hazard goal.

This is one of the areas I have issues with Rodgers and his tactics but of course the lemmings with blind faith won't hear of it.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozone. What game are you watching. Hazzard scored because Agger stopped tracking his run. Then a beautiful lay off by Sakho to Hazzard's feet. Try to be objective and not just post stuff to justify your reasons for being anti Rodgers and against half the Liverpool team.

Agree0 Disagree0

You go Ozone, those stupid lemmings happy with the obvious progress being made and attractive football being played.

Keep you're fingers crossed that the club will fail and you'll be proved right, oh what a joyous day of celebration that will be for you.

Agree0 Disagree0

My point is that a player of his ilk has many more split decisions to make than most players on the pitch hence why his decision making is highlighted. If anything it's his shooting practice that he needs to double in the new year. If he had scored more goals would anyone be questioning his form?

Agree0 Disagree0

Have a look at the bigger picture Irish Rover and look where the Chelsea move started from that resulted in the goal. Dear o dear o me, this is as frustrating as head butting a wall.

Agree0 Disagree0

In fact you've indirectly confirmed my point Irish Rover, dear o dear o me. Exactly, Agger to far up the pitch when Phil gave the ball away. Engage your brain lad before you have a pop.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well after looking at it again I can't understand where you are coming from. I see interplay from Chelsea players in the middle of the park, at no time does Coutinho touch the ball. Then Hazzard scores on their left side of the pitch. i'm afraid you are deluded. Looking for a scapegoat to justify your critisim.

Agree0 Disagree0

As I said Irish Rover, it's not rocket science. Take your index finger and press rewind on the remote from the moment the ball hits the net to the moment we lose possession.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's amazing how 80% of the fans around me started moaning about Phil losing possession yet you can't see it. Just take a deep breath, take your rose tinted Brenda glasses off and look at it objectively kid.
