Lots of discussion on our recent improvement and more optimism about our chances of a top 4 finish which is good to see. But.

My anxiety lies on the ability of BR to rotate the squad, particularly when the Europa League games re-start. I'm yet to see anything that fills me with hope that suggests the manager can successfully rotate players at the right time to keep them sharp. I hope he keeps rotation to a minimum and that my concerns are unfounded (and that we don't get knocked out in the next round).

Believable8 Unbelievable2

He should just play gerrard in cup games from here on in. Rotate lallana with pipco. Rotate sterling with balo. Play Sturridge every game- he's had 5 months off!

Agree0 Disagree3

{Ed001's Note - why on earth would you want to rotate Sterling with Balotelli? What insanity would cause anyone to do that???}

04 Feb 2015 12:20:50
Surely the natural rotation for giving Sterling rest would be Lallana

Agree0 Disagree0

Haha. Well it was tongue-in-cheek (which I think you got). But tbf, Balo's best position is behind, and servicing, a main striker (rather than being a lone striker). i.e. replacing Sterling in this central role now that Sturridge is back.

Sterling could be played out wide in this formation, drawing players out and creating space for Balo and his back heels

Could it be worth a chance? (How many more chances will he get i wonder?)

Hi eds was wondering if you think the owners will be disappointed not to have moved on a couple of players in the window. Am I right in saying a bid was accepted for lambert only for the player to reject. The owners were obviously open to offers for the likes of Enrique borini and balo but it seems players now a days seem to prefer to sit on a big contract rather than play. Does any one know if brad jones contract expires this summer

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I don't think the owners will be thinking about it. Lambert did not want to move as you say. BJ contract runs to 06/16.}

If the team was interested to move him which I think is fair enogh they should have sorted this in advance and not in the last 4 hours of the transfer window. If someonw would take him to a talk in four eyes tell him he is unlikely to play and Liverpool ask him to go and they would give him enough time to think about it and understand they don't want him anymore he may have gone. Asking him to take this decision in one hour is not fair.

Hi Ed, good to see a nice quiet window with no panic signings! Have you any insight into who Liverpool will be interested in the summer? I think we need a GK, Att Mid, and a Striker. I would also really like to see Ibe and Rossiter be involved next season! What do you think?

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I think the club is well served for attacking midfield players but a central MF makes sense - with a GK and a striker.}

03 Feb 2015 17:12:41
Eds. Why do I get 2 different opening pages of "Liverpool Latest Banter" Today e.g. I page had many 3rd Feb posts, but alternative page had only 1 post. Strange! PLUS I can't access a "banter form" only rumour form. Thxs

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed033's Note - We have a liverpool banter site at http://www.liverpool-banter.co.uk which has the latest liverpool banter on it

We also have a banter page on liverpool-rumours.co.uk (this site) that has different latest liverpool banter on it.

The banter form, the rumour form and the create new post form are the same form because where the sent in post ends up is decided by an Ed.

Liverpool forward Philippe Coutinho has signed a long-term contract with Liverpool.

The club has not confirmed the length of the contract but Sky sources understand it runs until June 2020.

Best news of the window. Hard to believe we paid 8.5 million pounds for him, considering he's been one of our most integral players the last two seasons. Great if its true that his contract runs that long.

Believable16 Unbelievable0

Now, I hope he kicks on and improves on his finishing and plays with greater consistency. Brilliant player though, he makes LFC tick, make no mistake about that.

Hey eds
I just thought of something. Imagine if we get Gerrard on loan next season until say Jan or Feb and just before his loan deal expires we are still in contention for the league ( like really close) do you think they can work something out for him to stay the season ( I know apparently Lampard hadn't signed a deal with the mls team so he could extend his time at city)??
Gerrard might just get that BPL he deserves
Thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - No, Gerrard is off.}

Looking at that scenario. How many apperances does a player have to make to qualify for a medal? If your question were to happen, like ED answered he does not stay, we win the EPL could he still recieve a winners medal.

BTW, we won't win the league next season

Agree1 Disagree2

I seem to remember that when Arsenal won the league they had to get Martin Keown to 10 appearances for him to get a winners medal (I remember him coming on in the 85th minute for the last few games of the season).

Don't know if that is still the case or not.

Agree0 Disagree0

If I was SG then I'd do the doing for LA then eff off to his place in Dubai for a rest. forget flogging himself back here

Both parties need to move on once the season is finished, coming back would be no good for either.

I honestly don't see the point, Gerrard is the past. His legs are gone.

Afternoon Eds, hope your all well.
Just a question, please excuse my ignorence if it sounds daft. When Liverpool enquired about Ings then loaning back for the rest of the season, this was told it would break premier league rules. What's the difference between that and Totenham and Alli, is it different Rules for FL?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - A good question. It is simply that the MK Dons are not in the Premier League.}

Ed, I have read that Liverpool are to try and utilise a 'loophole' in the FA rules to effectively sign Ings on a pre-contract agreement with him remaining at Burnley for the remainder of the season. The report cites Smalling's transfer from Fulham to Utd as an example. Have the rules altered since that transfer? Also if we were to offer a fee as suggested would this not have had to be done in the transfer window?

Cheers

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - There is no loophole and Liverpool are as dumb as a box of rocks if they think there is. The rules that apply are the rules for this season - not the rules from 5 or 6 years ago.

Ings is out of contract at the end of the season and can join Liverpool with compensation being paid to Burnley for developing the player as a youth. Liverpool can talk to his agent and agree whatever they want before then. They cannot talk to the player without the permission of his club. It is simple.}

Burnley did not develop ings at youth, bournemouth did, eddie howe signed him from bournemouth when he went to manage burnley

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Ok - so Burnley are due compensation for the development they have provided the player with.}

The collective box of rocks is the lazy media and sadly a few on here who don't bother to check

vrcomp
Y.N.W.A.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - That is about pre-contracts. Liverpool are not allowed a pre-contract with Ings.

Burnley are not involved from a contractual standpoint Ings he will be out of contract in the summer so any contract between Liverpool and Burnley would be of no consequence at all - as he would not be Burnley's player to transfer. I have explained what can be done and that involves talking with his agent. I truly struggle to understand why people think there is any need to do anything, or to keep suggesting ways to tap a player up, or look for rules that can be abused.

The player has made it clear that he wants the move and Liverpool are interested. Come June 1 they can agree a pre-contract or, if he has been released, the actual contract. There is no rush - it can go ahead then and Liverpool will have the new striker the fans crave.}

In fairness, it's the daily express who seem to believe that rules haven't changed since 2010

Greeting Eds & Fellow Reds

I have to say that I am quite happy with the last transfer window my reasons.

1) We did not spend even more cash that we don't have.

2) We did not put even more barriers in front of our younger talents.

3) Ojo will have competitive games and hopefully will improve as I believe he is a real talent .

4) Some of our fans will ave to take a dose or reality . Benzema . honestly .

5) BR will have to fix his own mistakes, we have to work with what we have, this may or may not give BR a chance to improve or will expose his coaching flaws.

6) We will see more youth in the 1st team set up hopefully.

hello eds.

1.does balo has any chance to save his career?
2. ED, just like the way u mentioned about Kevin trapp
is there any such striker out there, who is underrated?
3. Will it be possible for us to buy a striker like lacazette, by selling all the other 3 strikers?

THANKS.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - (1) Liverpool want to sell Balotelli but were asking too much. I imagine he will go in the summer. (2) It is a little too subjective for me to answer. (3) Lacazette won't be joining Liverpool. I don't know what you mean by a "striker like" him.}

03 Feb 2015 13:02:28
Hi Edds,
With all the rumours about the review being held by the owners on the management and structures of the club. Will we ever likely be able to see the results/information about that review? Or will it just be a case of one day seeing rodgers replaced/warned and some management changes? Really curious to see if the recent upturn in form will affect the review and the managerial situation!
Cheers!

Believable3 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Many changes have already been made - you need to look beyond just the players and the manager. There has been a new office opening in London, medical team changes are happening, commercial changes are happening and Billy Hogan has arrived. The scouting system has changed. If you are expecting some published report full of tittle tattle - it will be a long wait.}

Thanks for answer Ed and DeanW for question, that's what I was looking for as well.

Who is Billy Hogan?

{Ed001's Note - We have posted a new article entitled, Manchester United; Have our UCL rivals moved ahead of us this winter?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

". and with the squad we have available in direct comparison to our rivals then we should be achieving that at least." That one made me giggle.

Top four would probably have been a reality if BR had dragged his harris into gear sooner instead of wasting half a season being stubborn and trying to prove a point.

Agree1 Disagree1

Unfortunately true Red Lenin, we should have walked top four this year, but alas the damage is done and we're left with egg on our faces considering the quality, or rather lack thereof, of our rivals.

Agree1 Disagree1

03 Feb 2015 11:35:45
Would everyone be happy with Ings a s our striker signing for the summer. I know all of us would love a lacazatte or benzema etc but ings is actually a good striker and will be very cheap. Plus if we are to continue with this formation then we only need one striker in the XI IMO

Ed1 would also like to hear your opinion mate

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - I am not convinced he would be a good option. He has picked up a fair few injuries in his time, ones which will lessen his ability to use his main asset, pace, in short order. I would rather we looked elsewhere. I don't see anything particularly special about him when I watch him play, to think he would be able to adjust and provide anything other than pace to our game. He is just not good enough on the ball for my liking.}

He is a good finisher and a out let in front of goal borini balloteli and possibly lambert could all leave origi ings and one other striker maybe someone more experienced would be great

Agree2 Disagree0

03 Feb 2015 12:48:16
It's hard to tell if he's someone whose struggled a bit with a lack of talent around him and will flourish with more movement and options, or whether being surrounded by more talent will mean he gets outshone and hides. I'll say this for him though - when you put him 1vs1, he scores and if he's smart enough to tactically adapt and let the midfield create chances for him, he could do well. What worries me though is that if we start next season with Sturridge, Origi, Ings and one of our current 3, we still have no-one who can really be relied on long term to lead the lien in Sturridge's absence

Agree0 Disagree0

I would be ok with Ings joining as long as he is not the only striker that comes to LFC in the summer. Borini, Balo and Lambert will probably move on in the summer so maybe having 4 strikers in the squad will be helpful considering how many times Sterling and lallana have had to fill in due to Sturridge's injury problems. Also, Origi is inexperienced and will take time to make an impact. Signing only Ings for the striker position will be underwhelming and i hope someone more experienced is also being lined up for the forward position.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - So what about Yesil - or do you think Liverpool will kick him out as well. It is beginning to sound like another rebuild is expected.}

I like Ings as player. Fast, powerful, knows where the goal is, likes to try and beat his man, very hardworking and not scared to put a foot in and break up opposition attacks in their own half.

However, his movement still needs work, his first touch is very inconsistent, and his shooting could improve. As Ed001 says, injuries are a issue.

For a free transfer, I'd s it' a no brainer though personally. He would be a willing and good back up striker to Sturridge. He is a natural goal scorer and it never hurts to have a few of them.

We only really play with 1 striker so Sturridge, Ings and Origi is enough senior options for next season (assuming Borini, Lambert and Balotelli are all moved on). If there are any injures, why not let Yesil or Dunn cover? Or even Snclair and Canos from the U18's.

If money was not an option, sure, Lacazette is a great option and the man I wanted last summer before his price inevitably sky rocketed. Can we really afford £30m for a back up striker though? That ship has sailed in my opinion unless Rodgers has genuine plans to go back to 2 up top. We're not Man City. We can't afford four £25-35m strikers on £120-300k a week if we're only ging to play one at a time. We need to seriously cut back on our spending because the club is being run into the ground and we have Ibe, Sterling and Markovic also capable of playing up front anyway.

Ings would be a bargain signing if you ask me and is well worth pursuing.

Agree1 Disagree4

I think I woild still prefer Benzema

Agree4 Disagree2

03 Feb 2015 13:05:29
Maybe we should see if Ibe can convert to a striker role.

Agree4 Disagree0

I look at Ings and just see an English Aspas. Sorry if that sounds harsh.

Agree1 Disagree4

{Ed002's Note - I am sure he will get the trashing that is due all players once he joins.}

Personally, I'm just hoping for a front 4 one day of Ojo, Ings, Origi and Ibe; or OI OI! for short ;)

Agree4 Disagree4

I think investment up front depends on: A. How well Ibe acclimates to our squad in the last part of the season; B. How fit Danny is/stays, C. Moving on at least 2/3 of Balo, Bori and Berto and D. Where we finish in the table. If we make the CL its possible we'll attract a striker of Lacazette's caliber, but I can't really see how we can 'lose' money on Ings - good attitude, slightly injury prone but nothing so substantial I fear for his career. He's got pace on his side, which is something Balo/Bert seem to lack. All that said, there are other better options and its more important that we get the best out of our current squad than add to it.

Agree1 Disagree0

I don't see why we should buy a striker because he is a 'bargain'? Why not get a bigger bargain and not sign him? I would rather use what we have first. I'm guessing Sturridge will start most matches and origi/ibe filling in when Sturridge rested.

Agree0 Disagree0

Have not really seen him that much but I will be watching with interest his performances with interest from now til the end of the season.

Agree1 Disagree0

Can I just add another with interest in there. . Nice one.

Hi Eds,

Just wondering do we have any goalkeepers coming through that are the quality/potential of making it in the first team?

Still not sure why we didn't look at Foster when at Celtic, could have been our no.1 for years to come.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - we looked at Foster when he was at Newcastle, he was crap, so we loooked away quickly. Even Celtic only ended up signing after exhausting other options. He was extremely average for them, a flapper, so little interest saw him end up at Southampton. He has been, at best, average and a flapper, since joining them, why would we want him? He just isn't very good.

Right now, there is no particularly outstanding keeper, not one that you can immediately see he is good enough.}

Dare, I say it but Mignolet has looked a lot better in the last few weeks, having a more solid defence and midfield isn't putting him under pressure so much. Maybe the answer isn't a new first choice, but a good understudy to push Mignolet and a tope goalkeeper coach(Xavi Valero?)

Ojo joined wigan. An unexpected transfer. I think it is not good for a school going boy to be on loan and play in a very physical league and under performing wigan.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I would tend to agree with you.}

If he can get a game it can be looked at in a positive light no point him been on the bench for 6 months with all l school ect

Agree0 Disagree0

What is he 16, 17? There is no hurry, I would've thought you let him finish his education and then worry more about loan spells. He is looking a top wee player and hope he can manage it.

Agree1 Disagree0

Hi Eds,

Do clubs look at stuff like education when considering if players should go out on loan?

I mean Wigan is less than 45mins from Liverpool, maybe he was allowed to go to them because he can carry on his education in Liverpool at the same time.

Wonder if it would have been different if someone like Portsmouth or Brighton had wanted him?

Cheers all

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Yes - the FA ensures that they do. Youth loans are generally frowned upon.}

03 Feb 2015 18:55:42
Ed002 I remember a couple of
years ago when
Sterling was the same age you said he wasn't allowed to go on loan because he's too young. Have the rules changed?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - There are strict rules controlling loans - they change every year. Youth loans are complicated because there are limitations of where the players can go and additional rules about education etc..}

It make sense to loan him to Wigan because he don't have to move house or school it's not that far from Liverpool

Hi all.
Just want to kno your thoughts on whether no business this month means owners are considering Rodgers' position?

Believable1 Unbelievable4

Everything is under review as the EDs keep saying over and over.

We didn't buy anyone this window because we didn't sell anyone and we don't have the money to keep buying players. I'm sure if we had sold a bunch of our fringe players we would have seen one or two signings.

Nothing to do with BR's future!

I for one am very happy with this window, no knee jerk purchases, no sales for massive losses and no scrabbling about at the end of the window. Finally some clear thinking (maybe!)

Agree2 Disagree1

03 Feb 2015 08:52:19
Our strategy should be "see what we have" before buying anymore players.
I am glad we did not buy anyone in this window.
I think we only need to buy 3 players in the summer.
A gk, dm and a striker.
Use the players we have and get rid of what we don't need and then look at the market.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

Some really good points jonny but I don’t really understand why do we still concentrate only on buying players. First of all we need to sell/ release (out of contract) fringe or “brendaned” players because of financial rules and our current situation. This should be our priority. Some candidates to leave in summer - Jones, Enrique, Toure, Coates, maybe Ilori, Johnson, Gerrard (already leaving to US), maybe Lucas (hope not) or Allen, Balloteli, Aspas, Borini, Luis Alberto, Yesil… ) I don’t expect leaving all of them of course, there will be maybe no interest on transfermarket or they will have not interest in transfer because of really good salary in Liverpool…. But this could also give a chance and more time on pitch for young players from academy like Wisdom, Flanagan, Rossiter, Ojo, Ibe…I think our squad is really good and has potential on top 4. Then we need to concentrate on our real problem – coaches, DoF, manager, scouts… And after all these steps we can concentrate on possibility to buy new player/s.

Agree2 Disagree0

Wouldn't even bother with a defensive mid. I'd recall Wisdom or Ilori and just use Can in midfield as well as giving chances to Rossiter, Phillips, Pelosi, Williams and Chirivella. Those 5 youngsters along with Hendo, Lucas and Can should be plenty of depth. I'd just grovel with Lucas and only sign a cdm if he leaves.

Agree3 Disagree5

If lucad leaves we need a top top DM to replace him

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Feb 2015 12:51:50
I wonder if Lucas being given the VC next season would help sway him? Should be a candidate for it anyway

Agree1 Disagree0

I agree hjikle. Captain and Vice captain should be players with leadership qualities who when fit, are automatic starters.

That limits it to Sakho, Hendo, Lucas, Sterling and Sturridge on the automatic starters front.

Sakho is probably a more natural leader than Lucas, but Lucas leads by and sets an example. Hendo captain and Lucas or Sakho vice captain for me. Sturridge isn't really a leader as such. Seems a great role model though. Sterling is a great player, but he's no leader.

Agree1 Disagree4

The ed's have said on numerous occasions that Lucas wants to leave. Why would making him VC change his mind? Can would be his DM replacement. What is it that makes this so hard for people to understand?

Agree1 Disagree1

03 Feb 2015 22:20:52
Perhaps Lucas would change his mind because he's actually playing now rather than being on the bench or out of the match day squad?

Agree2 Disagree0

04 Feb 2015 12:29:33
Brisbane - maybe a more solid indication of his importance to us, and respect we have for him, and that BR isn't going to write him out of the plans again any time soon, will convince him not to leave after all. People have been known to change their mind and reconsider things once or twice in human history, there is no harm in asking such a valuable player to do the same. Also re: Can replacing him, short term fine but Can has such a big range of ability and movement it would be slightly wasteful to confine him to protecting the defense for the next 5 years non-stop! And unless something major changes about our defense, it does need dedicated protection

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Feb 2015 08:06:30
Having a good little chuckle over everyone saying that Lambert should have gone, doesn't fit our style etc. All the exact same people who last season were moaning that we didn't have any options in attack, no-one different who couldn't be muscled out of games etc. We bought him so that we have a variety of attacking options. That means he probably won't sit as comfortably with our normal set up. But he's a good player, a decent option, a recognized goalscorer and someone that really wants to play for the club. I'm glad he's with us and would keep him over any of our spare strikers except maybe Borini, cause at least they care

Believable11 Unbelievable1

Yeah I thought it would be a bit pointless sending him out on loan.
But the club seems to excell in pointless loans these days.
I hope he has a better second half of the season than the first.
He's a good player but being used far too little and not playing to his strengths.

Liverpool style ? What style ?

Missed out on Dele Alli. Oops

Believable4 Unbelievable0

I was disappointed about that too - but the more i think about it the less disappointed i am to be honest. We have a lot of young talented midfield players around the same age as Dele Alli in J.Rossiter, J.Williams, A.Phillips, P.Chirivella and even Emre Can who is like 20 right? Already difficult enough for them to get a game and who is to say Dele Alli is a better player than any or all of them? He has been exposed to first team football contrary to our players. He could be a hyge player but so could some of the above mentioned if given the chance to play. This will all sound stupid if he end up being a "Gareth Bale" and get sold to Madrid for a huge amount of money some day in the future. But i really want those young players who are already here to be given the chance before we bring in someone like Dele Alli. We will never know how good they are unless they are exposed to first team football.

Thanks ED

03 Feb 2015 02:05:32
Like to say I am relieved that liverpool have not signed anyone this transfer window. Of course I wouldn't say no to a proven world class player, but the fact we didn't go and make a 'hope for the best' purchase shows the club has learnt from past mistakes.

IMO the squad has had better quality than last season, losing sturridge (and signing poor back up) cost us a title challenge.
And the less said about Brendan's tactics the better.

A good run from now and I think top four is for the taking.

Believable4 Unbelievable1

Tbh, i would have liked to see the club move on a couple of players namely Enrique and Lambert. Enrique is simply the club's twitter boy and makes no contribution on the pitch whatsoever. The club should have pushed him harder to make the move to Palace. Lambert is a different case but he was never going to be a first team player for us and with Sturridge back, even a place on the bench will not be guaranteed. Why spend the twilight years of your career stuck on the bench? Again here, the club should have urged Lambert to make the move to Villa. The club just does not seem decisive enough when selling its players.

Agree2 Disagree7

03 Feb 2015 07:59:16
Don't get your argument re: Lambert Indian. He's perfectly happy and wants to stay and contribute in the way he knew he would be i.e. as a partner, understudy and option with Sturridge as the main guy. It's what we really bought him for. Why force him to go to a club he doesn't want to go to or care about?

Agree5 Disagree1

Rather we had sold Ballo to give a youngster a place. Doesn't bring anything to the team, and totally shown up by Sturridge on Saturday.
