Last season runners up with the best record against our top 4 rivals. this year the worst record v the sides above us due to a failure to fix a poor defence and to replace a world class striker. Lovern was meant to be the solution and it failed hence Can and a back 3. Sturridge injured hilghlighted the failure to brink in a top striker and we are still getting players sent off at crucial times, after Henderson's suspension v Chelsea last season cost us the title (I believe if he'd been available for that game we'd have won)
All the above point to a manager who cannot spot a player (don't give me the transfer committee excuses), can't get tactics and defence right (Moreno starts after the Utd game. really?Henderson at RWB to give Markovic a start and weaken the centre of midfield?). The substitutions v Utd and today at half time tell you he recognises his mikstakes however it's too late by half time and he shouldn't be making them to start with. English clubs performance in Champions league tell us it's a poor premier league and none of the top 4 sides are special therefore there is no excuse having spent as much as anyone in the last 3 seasons. He'll have plenty of time in the summer to top up the sunbed tan and polish his teeth. Guess what all the Emporer is in his altogether!

Agree, about the club or someone within being able to 'spot a player'. Over the years the likes of Hamann, Henchoz, Hyypia, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres, Suarez etc. have been 'spotted'. Just recently we've failed to do this, in terms of finding players, experienced or not who make an instant impact. In my opinion anyway.

With regard to Academies, which are the 'hot' topic this weekend. The club need to look more at giving young players a chance, simply because every 'worldie' as they're called, started in an academy and were given a chance. Some will do well others not, I remember Ferguson sicking with Beckham after he had several bad performances after being given a chance in the 1st team.

My point being, there are many problems at the club, depending who you ask. For me, we're not buying the correct players and not balancing that starting 11 with raw talent from the academy. Obviously there are players from the current squad who we wouldn't want to move on, but they could be counted on one hand (nearly).

Last season was a false dawn. We should have remained humbled and determined at the same time instead of thinking we have arrived. Today`s game simply showed that the team`s confidence is shattered and we should just focus on finishing the seson strong and winning a trophy and regroup in the summer with a new structure and new ideas with or w/o a new manager. YNWA!

I did not see the game so can't comment on that but for me it seems the team spirit and togetherness shown last year has gone somewhere.

Eds

Obviously a disappointing result and display today and Rodgers saying himself top 4 nearly impossible to reach. Does he himself no that he may loose his job or will he be thinking 5th or 6th might be enough?

Do you see today's result costing him his job?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - decisions are not made on one game.}

05 Apr 2015 00:18:35
But over the course of the season eds. ?

I genuinely want him to stay as I think he still possesses a lot we want going forward at the club and has his strengths, however there does need to be at least some kind of a shake up at staff level to sort out the transfer committee, our continuing defensive frailties, overall bad PR from the club and our tactical set-up.
I'd like this to be with Rodgers still, but, correct me if I'm wrong eds, I get the impression that's becoming a less and less likely scenario.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - as I have said all along, he was always unlikely to be manager next season, the league finish is just another nail along the way.}

05 Apr 2015 04:34:17
And how exactly will 5th or 6th be enough? The ma has failed the owners completely, Brendan will be gone in the summer for sure now. LFC is not a club that rewards failures.

Funny isn't it how you guys like 4-6 weeks ago were all harping on about utd not getting top 4, hmmm now look at yourselves, lucky if you get 6th and with sterling wanting to leave!

You guys need to realise that liverpool will always be a feeder team for the bigger clubs

Anyway just thought i would congratulate you lfc fans on an amazing performance today!! :)

8 points is it now

Good day guys

As I said earlier today, I am not BR's agent and don't mind too much if he stays or goes. It is a sad day for the club, not just because of this season but becaues how hard it will be to make our way to the top 4 next season. It will only become harder. I personally cannot see another manager who will make us go back there immidiatly next year, a new manager is a huge change. Maybe the year after but that is a long time to wait. I am quite shocked by people who want Rafa back, honestly cannot understand that. But if they bring De Boer or another decent name (they have to want to take this job as well, it is not enough that their name is being mentioned here a lot, as you know) I will support the new person and hope for the best.

Yes the signings are probably BR's biggest failure. I still think that given our squad, given Suarez going, Sturridge injured half season, Gerrad's last season in the club and how we started the season 5th will not be so bad especially if we can add the FA cup. And BR showed some very impressive coaching skills since the begining of 2015 but the last two games, like those games against Chelsea and Palace last year, were a bit too much for us.

Funny how you've just popped out of the wood work

I wouldn't get to carried away with your team at the minute , top 4 is a good result for you this year is it!!!

Hardly what the top top teams aim for is it.

Agree4 Disagree0

04 Apr 2015 23:24:11
And if we cannot add the FA CUP, it will still be a failure because BR failed to plan accordingly for LS departure and Studge`s injury record. We needed 3-4 top players for the first team and NOT a new squad. A new squad mens you are rebilding after coming 2nd in the league prior so he needs to bear the whole blame and if he goes, he would hve earned it.

05 Apr 2015 08:00:02
Is that all we did spend 120 million?
Or did we trade in our only genuine world class player for the main part of that 120 million?
If there is any lesson to be learnt from this season is that you don't sell your best players.
And if you are forced to then do it on your terms with a replacement lined up.
Absolutely gutted with the result yesterday.
Looks as though the players have packed it in.
As for Brendan. I would like him to stay personally, but I can see him being sacked most definitely.

I hope big v isn't counting united as a big club lol.

The only way you lot get players now is by paying them 250 grand a week and a top transfer fee.

I remember the days when players wanted to play for united and wages where the last thing on there minds.

I liked BR from the day he joined, and hope he would be given maximum support. The club did, but I feel he lost focus after last season - or maybe he just didn't pan out the future he saw for the club.
The first season was a transitioning season, agreed. But this is the third season and the decisions he has made and his signings have been contradictory to each other.
Between playing possession football, playing transitioning football, and different other styles, the team and players have no identity.
My wish for next season: (a) Jurgen Klopp comes in - BVB has played the best transitioning football over the last couple of years (prior to this year and injury to key players), and that would suit Sterling, Sturridge, Coutinho etc. (b) Lucas stays (c) Daryl Janmaat for RB. I know persons have mentioned Kelly/Wisdom, but I don't think they would really end up as top RBs. Look more like CBs to me (personal opinion). (d) Backup to Sturridge please. I really like the guy and his goal returns are good. Can't blame him for his injuries - same happened with Robben earlier in his career but he overcame that, and I hope Studge does. But for now, a decent back-up please.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

04 Apr 2015 20:53:06
He may have to go. Like you, I backed him in recent months but I accept he may have to go, though until two weeks ago it looked very unlikely. I have no idea what the owners think, it may be that only the FA cup can save him now. But if we lose to Blackbourn and finish our season eary April, it will not do his chances of future with us any good.

I do think he had an unbeliveable challanging year, I hope at least his critics will appreciate it. He himself probably underestimated the challanges and some here still do. The impact of Suarez loss was huge, abosolutley huge. He was just irreplaceable. Sturridge, the only decent striker BR had, was injured most season. His main replacement, Baloteli who BR opposed to buy but still, , even the greatest critics of the signings couldn't have predicted he wold be so unbeliveably poor on the pitch and produce so little in terms of goals and assists (there were a lot of preditions for discipline issues which actually truned out to be quite minor). The demise of Gerrad wasn't an easy one to handle. Finally not only Mario but lot of our other signings, for me Markovich and Lovern in particular turned out to be a failure - ok signings is mainly his responsibilty but both seemed to do so much better in their previous clubs. And stil at some point he was able to stable the ship and turned it around. Now it seems the water which got to the ship eariler my sink it after all. I fear the next season if he goes but maybe there is no choice.

In any case I still didn't give up the FA cup. I would be slightly more positive if our defenders and captain wouldn't have suddenly this competition of who get more rediculus red cards. But we can still win Wednesday and the semi against AV and then a final is a final. Everything can happened.

Agree1 Disagree1

04 Apr 2015 23:30:32
You say you are not his agent YET you make excuses for him. He opposed every striker bar Balo so your sying he opposed it is wrong. Also, he knew what he needed to achieve due to the promises he made to get the funds that these same owners do not trust him with so he was well aware of the verdict should he fail which he has done. These are the facts and what amongst many other things the owners will use to sack or keep him and frankly, it ain`t looking good for him at all. He is responsible for our slumpin to the point of playing catch up in a poor EPL, not replacing LS efectively and not plnning for Studge`s injury absence. All down to him.

That is what can happen when one gambles on a young manager.

All the top four teams have a tried and tested more experienced man.

Agree4 Disagree0

05 Apr 2015 00:46:31
We knew Suarez was leaving months before he did; we knew Sturridge was injury prone from day one and bottom line is, he had the final say on Balotelli (surely?), so what are BR's excuses?
Just that; excuses.
Not good enough; we've made little to no improvement since he came in and that's a fact.
I don't feel comfortable accepting he has failed and needs to be replaced, but that's the truth, and truth hurts.
Rodgers has simply got to go.

Agree6 Disagree3

05 Apr 2015 08:04:43
There have been improvements.
It just does not feel like that after a chastening defeat.
Your namesake for example.
I wanted Skrtel sold when Rodgers arrived but he has improved.

Agree0 Disagree1

05 Apr 2015 11:43:40
Serious, Barnes?
Skrtel is atrocious; always has been too.
How has he improved; because 2 other defenders are used next to him and allow him to get away with murder every week?
If I'm not mistaken, he actually scored a few vital goals last season too.
Defo don't think you can use him as an example of an improvement.
Where else have we improved too, because if it's just Skrtel (according to you), then that's not enough?

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Apr 2015 13:17:42
Skertel was on of the best defenders in the PL this season and easily our best player, defenitley in 2015 anyway. His only sin for me was the step on De Gea that can cost us the game against Blackbourn but it only shows how important he is for us. This is not my view but the view of Lawrenson and others.

Re Baloteli, it is well known that BR wanted Bony and Baloteli was forced on him as the committee didn't want to pay 23m on Bony. Yes he could have veto Baloteli but no one could have predicted Mario will be this poor on the pitch. When he said everyone, or 99 percent of all pundits, managers etc, agreed that if BR can dsiciplin him and prevent him from being a negative influence in the dressing room then he is a fantastic forward. Well we all proved wrong.

The reason I defend him is because I think at times he got a lot of our squad. And I fear it will take another manger some time to do that. But let's hope I am wrong. I fear tough(er) times are coming.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Balotelli was not "forced on" Rodgers.}

05 Apr 2015 19:19:06
Absolute garbage, sorry mate. Skrtel never has, or will be, one of the best defenders in any league.
Cahill, Terry, Alderweireld are 3 names that instantly spring to mind as being far better (and there's probably a lot more, if I cared to go in to it further.)
A season also lasts over the best part of a year, not just from January, so it's irrelevant whether Skrtel has been so awesome since the turn of 2015.
Again, a massive part of his 'improvement' is down to 2 CB's being played alongside him, who can help him out of the sh*t he invariably always still invites on him/us (plus, Can has had to be played out of position to accommodate this change).

Balotelli, as the ed has pointed out, wasn't forced on anybody. He also wasn't expected to be a success by most, let's be honest. We all knew it was a huge risk, that probably wouldn't pay off and were correct here. Just because Bony was a no go, doesn't mean we had to settle for Mario.
Rodgers even said there was no chance he'd be coming; so why did he still sign him?

Finally, just because 99% of pundits (even Mark Lawrenson) say something, doesn't make it gospel.
How about having your own thoughts and opinions, or at least not trying to prove a lame point by using 'pundits' (most of whom talk absolute garbage too, but actually get paid for it!)

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Apr 2015 19:29:54
the only frustrating thing for BR on my part is why did we waste £16m on Mario, £25m on Louvern and both cannot get a game. I know BR said that Mario said he was injured but he wouldn't have started anyway.

Is BR basically showing he has no faith in either by picking others so gave wasted £41m.

They are transfer errors we just cannot afford especially when we won't qualify to the CL now.

It will be difficult against Blackburn now and his selection will be interesting with all the suspensions.

I wouldn't say its the only frustrating thing for Brentano, there are loads.£25m defender not good enough over a 34 year old who is dodge at best?lovren should have played and much as I don't like him even johno would have been better at right wing back over Hendon who should have been I middle.Allen looks lost against good oppo far to much and Moreno defending has been getting worse and worse, again johno would have been better bet today and if fit enough flano,we need the kid back sharpies to get stuck in.Brentans on borrowed time, will the fa cup be enough salvation even if we win it?

Eds and Reds,

I fear my calls to keep BR as opposed to continuing to sack managers is going to fall on deaf ears, with performances like today's not helping my cause.

I still stick by my word though. I want someone to be given a chance to have a long crack at our club, build from the bottom up.

Yes, we as Liverpool fans do feel we have the right to be fighting for the top spot, but changing every couple of years won't help. We don't have the funds to back a new manager every season to match the likes of City, Chelsea etc. so I think we need to get to the top through stability, building a club that plays a certain style and focussing more on giving youth a chance.

People will say we spent £100m, but we had that due to player sales and the champions league. I don't think we'll have those amounts to spend should a new manager come in. Yes in hindsight it may not have been spent wisely, but in my opinion that wasn't all down to BR.

He does wind me up as well and I also think he's far from the finished article. But I think if we give him stability, cap our spending and bring in a defensive coach or two (Carra/Hyypia?) and stick by him and hope we build the success that Wenger and Fergie achieved by being given time.

As much as I want him to stay, I do feel the club probably will sack him at the end of the season.

if that were to be the case, then I'll be praying for the return of Rafa.

Remember wounded reds, this is purely just opinion.

Let's hope we can finish the season strong and win the FA Cup,

the problem his its been three years and our defense is still shambolic. its now championship level. we might have not conceded in a few games against teams who weren't at their best but anyone can pretty much see it our defending is unorganized and without any leaders . the back three doesn't work. BR has to go , we won't achieve much with this type of defending , esp when we don't hv one exceptional attacking player among our ranks

Solid Defence is the basis of all teams that have won the premiership and BR has never got to grips with it. Pockets of success, yes, but overall it's been a bit of a disaster in this area.

I can't see how it or he can carry on long term if this isn't resolved by him admitting his skills lie elsewhere and to take some specialist assistance in this area.

Got a feeling it may be too late though.

Agree1 Disagree0

04 Apr 2015 21:06:30
Brendan has been largely at fault for the results and the club's failure to get a CL place, but I'm not going to make a cheap personal attack or insult the guy, and I hope others refrain from kicking the man when he's down, because no-one has tried harder to make the club successful in the last three years- we need to remember that he is on our side.

That said, it is hard to get past the very poor transfer dealings, and the massive funds wasted on players that we didn't need, or players who didn't perform.
In hindsight, rejecting bony, remy and lacazette- and signing mario- looks like a huge error of judgement on his part.

Spending 18m on sakho, and then a similar amount on his replacement Lovren- and then going back to playing Sakho anyway. It all smacks of a lack of awareness of finances, lack of good scouting, lack of clear thinking, and lack of judgement.
The same could be said of half a dozen other underperforming players (for whom we usually overpaid).

And it is hard to get past his stubborn adherence to a tactical system that totally failed to get anything out of the players (and failed to win games) for most of the first half of the season.

It was really hard to watch BR being out-thought by Van Gaal, and our players being out fought by Man Utd, because he stuck too predictably to a system that had already been effectively neutralised weeks before, and by several teams.

Has he learned from his mistakes? Well, it is always possible that he has now learned to change his system more quickly, and to understand when it has been totally sussed by other managers.

He might now understand that buying a player is a huge multi-year financial commitment for the club, and that success will never come when we spend tens of millions in successive windows on strengthening the same positions, leaving highly expensive players sat on the bench, or even out of the squad.

It may be that Brendan has learned and become a better manager from all of the experiences and mistakes of the last three years.
It may be that he is on the verge of resolving his various weaknesses, and becoming a great coach. Who knows?

Either way, I suspect it will be another club that will reap the benefits of the traumatic and expensive lessons he has learned at LFC.
It now seems very likely that he will leave LFC before the summer is out, but I will always remember the BR of last year, managing us to our first title charge since 2009. Yes, he failed at the final hurdle, but it was his first job at a very big club, and that last few months of last season was a pretty wild ride.
I say, good luck Brendan.

Agree5 Disagree1

04 Apr 2015 21:49:11
Our defense was on a good run before these last two games. We can't always have such a myopic view of a bad result. But that also means that we can't look too far into the distance to realise the current situation is going to fail us later on. We are not at that stage yet, but going back to the Sterling situation, we can't be a selling club now. I am certain if we keep these players, even Lovren, we could have a title winning team. Whether that be with BR or someone else is still to be determined.

Listen Rodgers has solved problems that have arisen at Liverpool.
The argument is whether he sees potential problems early enough?
I think he is extremely stubborn and spends little or no time worrying about the opposition.
The United game being a case in point.
We all knew about the Fellaini tactic.
Why did he not deal with it?

Were 5th in the league behind the top 4 richest clubs in the prem, we most probably over achieved last season.

We have completely new team nearly, we went on an amazing run to get back in contention. If we would have had a fit DS at the start we would have been in contention. BR has shown IMO he has the tactical awareness. Mistakes cost us the game this week at the back, not the manager, how can he stop kolo from giving the ball away?? How can it be his fault SG got sent off against Man U? Player error has cost us. The game these days is about fine margins.

We have a very young side and it will only get better why change that now by starting all over again with a new manger, it will be just the same whoever is in charge unless we had the billions the other teams above us have.

If we have the same next season under BR I will start to criticise him and call for a change.

Still know one has given a realistic manager option.

5th having spent 100m after nearly winning the PL last year, out of the CL w/o a whimper, and potentially w/o a trophy will get you fired at this level. He won`t get another year with those types of results, IMO. Six months at the very best and that will be a miracle in itself judging by the owners` hunger for success.

He is out of his depth at Liverpool.

He talked a good game and got the job.

It was FSG's lack of knowledge that has caused the problems.

Rodgers is not a bad manager and could well prove himself at another club.

The buck stops at FSG.

Could you imagine the owners of Man City or Abramovich employing anything other than a manager with a serious CV ?
FSG chose him and FSG kept him on because by sacking him they would have admitted defeat.

How can such a successful company not delegate to people who know what they are doing ?

They sacked Kenny. For what ?

I feel taking markovic off at half time was a big error. His late runs and support at the top end were a constant danger. Something we lost in the second half. For me I would have replaced Sturridge for Allen and gone 4-2-3-1. Can could have moved to right back, Henderson and Lucas I midfield and played markovic, sterling and countinho behind Sturridge. If we still weren't seeing change Lucas could have been sacrificed moving can into midfield. After all there were two right backs on the bench. Either one of the two forwards could also have been an option for what is a poor defensive arsenal unit. It's sad that BR didn't have the gumption to change things and in doing so ensured we didn't expose arsenals do obvious deficiencies! Once again we have allowed a team to play to their strengths and at no point have done anything to counter it. This responsibility lands squarely on the managers shoulders. Yes we should have gone one up and the match may have been different but that sort of chance just highlighted how poor arsenal are defensively and the system we play was never going to constantly expose them. The fact we never changed anything throughout the game defies belief. And anyone who says Henderson tucking in and allowing can to push on is deluding themselves.

Not as good a result for Arsenal as it was for us last season, don't forget they were top of the league when we did that to them and today they beat a team no longer in the top 4 and barely in the running for it.
Just shows even further how far off the pace we have dropped.

I still think that's explainable by selling a player like Suarez and no matter how much you spend you can't replace somebody like that.

We have some good players but i agree Rodgers needs to switch the system up again because he's been found out now. Credit to him for finding a system that surprised our opponents. But he should take from that that mixing it up was a success, not necessarily the system itself, why not try and change again so teams don't go into games knowing what we'll do.

Very bad day for us.

"I still think that's explainable by selling a player like Suarez and no matter how much you spend you can't replace somebody like that".

Off course it was going to be hard to replace LS. However, no one was asking for like for like because there is nobody else like him. BR decided that he needed 7 or so potential players (not even quality) to replace 1 individual. If he looked at the situation properly, he would have realised that he should stick with the system that was employed following his encounter with Biesla and only needed max 3 quality players. Instead he decided to take a lucky dip in a sweet shop and came up with cola bottles and candy floss.

What's going on with Flanno? He is fit enough to play is the Charity game but nowhere near the first team. Instead we play Can out of position, meaning Allen gets a game in midfield (does anyone give the ball away more than him?). I for one would play Flanno either at right wing back or right side of defence. Meaning Hendo can move back into the middle. If Flanno is the right sided defender then maybe give Can a go at the RWB role, his swashbuckling run's are a joy to watch.

My take on today:

We were never going to beat Arsenal, and set up for a draw. Within 30 seconds you knew it wasn't going to happen, and reality is, 4 - 1 flatters us. Should have been 8 - 2 (if sterling has scored his tap in).

The one thing I have to bring up is Hendo at right back, or right wing back, or whatever he was supposed to be today. Haven't we shown conclusively that he needs to be in the centre of the park?

And one other thing: Moreno has been woeful defensively, particularly against United. Why start him again? I have never had any faith in G. Johnson, but I would have preferred him on the left with Moreno in poor form.

Believable6 Unbelievable2

04 Apr 2015 16:49:00
Moreno has been poor defensively whole season and has been directly responsible for 5 goals conceded. What irritates me is the luke-warm attitude of some players and that includes Moreno.

It was yet another decision that defies logic as BR decided to push the one man in midfield who has looked excellent this year out wide to accommodate Lucas and Allen. Why not play all 3 of them in midfield?

If we had setup for a draw, you again have to question the manager.

Agree1 Disagree0

05 Apr 2015 00:14:34
Our first team when everyone is fit and on form can compete with most. The big problem today was the absent Skrtl - as our replacement defenders just don't cut it. And in the Premier League it only takes one weak link to undermine a team. Lucas and Sturridge coming back from injury were also clearly off the pace.

Our real problem though is our replacements are not up to scratch. Compare our squad to Arsenal's for example - they had Diaby, Arteta and Wiltshire missing from their midfield today.

This new system we are playing is not genius - it is simply a response to having no quality at all at fullback. BR knows he can't play Moreno at LB, and he has been without Flano all season and can't trust Johnson. For me fullbacks are an absolute priority for next season.

Clearly we will need a new CB too. If Lovren can't be trusted in a match like today then he must be sold on and surely this has to be the end of the road for Toure,

Then there is a replace met for Suarez. Money from Balotelli, Borini, Lambert and Aspas should provide a good start towards getting hold of a quality finisher to play alongside Sturridge - with Origi providing cover and maybe we will also get Ings?

I hope though we've learned a lesson and change the way we buy. Surely buying two top players for £30m each would have been better than buying Lallana, marlovic and Balotelli for £60m. I understand the wages argument, but wouldn't we be better with a core squad of top players complimented by young players instead of a sprawling squad of mediocrity?

Perhaps we don't have the clout to pull in the £30m rated players any more? Probably more like we don't want to pay the wages - but it seems like a false economy to me.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Apr 2015 15:44:25
edd if the owners are considering replacing Rodgers then my questions is, would it not be best to do it now? my reason being go all out and get the manager you want yes pay to get them out of there contracts pay Rodgers off but the benefits from having the manager for the last 6 or 7 games could be massive gets to see wat we need or don't, gets to work with the players and to no them, and also the players to get used to the way the managers wants them to play. this I believe would be massive for hitting the ground running next season wat you think?

No manager will leave their respective club this close to the end of the season. Brendan doesn't deserve to keep his job but you have to wonder what kind of attraction we are for a top manager without champions league football and having a squad of players who simply aren't good enough.

Most of the summer kitty will have to be made up of sales. Frank de Boer would have been the best and most realistic option but he's signed a new deal. You can of course forget your Klopp's, Simeone's etc.

04 Apr 2015 16:53:06

Our important game this week is Balckbourn, and this was the case before this game as well. I will judge BR after we finish our FA cup campaign, and if we are lucky enough to pass Blackbourn and then AV, then after our next meeting with Arsenal in Wembly, the more important potential meeting between the teams this season.

I will not get to the formation and selection of today. I will say only this. Like other people here I have made some predictions and made some suggestions throughout this season. A lot of them were rubbish, as I, unlike many here do get things wrong occasionaly. However, one comment I turned out to be very accurate. On the day Sanchez decided to join Arsenal rather than us I said that this decision would put Arseanl in the top4 and us out of it. And this is exactly what happened. Had he played for us we were 3rd and they were 5th.

People here talk about BR all day. Managers are important. A very small number of managers are even very important (Sir Alex, Morinho etc) but the quality of the players also has something to do with where you finish. And more accurately the quality of fit players, because some of our quality players were injured big parts of the season.

I think if you compare our squad to that of Arsenal, ManU, City and Chelsea, in objective eyes, then 5th place is the reaslstic place for us. If Wenger would have managed us this season and BR managed Arseanl, both teams would probably have ended up being on the same places they are now. We underperformed first half of the season, overperformed (to the real potential of our squad) second half and last two games were a bit of a reality check.

Another difference between us and the other top 4 is the quality of those who are not in our starting 11. Beyond 12-13 players, its like falling from a Cliff.

Yes, other than Sanchez decision there were some poor signings - for me Markovich, Lovern and of course Baloteli (who BR opposed) were all mistakes, but let's face it, it is not that Barca was offering Messi or Neymar.

We still have the FA cup, not such a bad trophy. It is a shame our players, who discipline-wise were very good all season start to get at least one red every game suddenly. Can and Skertl out, will not help us on Wednesday (though this is not BR's fault sorry). I hope we can somehow win this still.

Agree1 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - if you really believe that a manager is of so little importance, then you have no idea what you are talking about! The manager is absolutely vital, he sets the tactics, the style of play, the things that can make up for not having such good players or hold down quality players. I can't understand the sheer lunacy of suggesting that Rodgers would have got Arsenal in exactly the same place they are now! Wenger may be stuck in his ways, but he is still light years ahead of Rodgers as a manager, as we saw today.}

04 Apr 2015 16:57:07
So Sanchez is the difference between LFC and Arsenal? Rubbish.

Agree5 Disagree0

04 Apr 2015 17:11:15
I don't say a manager is not important. I just say he needs some good players to win games. Wenger may be a better manager, but in my view not so better that we would have taken the current Liverpool with Sturridge injured half season to a better place than 5th, sorry. And yes I think BR could have managed 3rd or 4th with this Arsenal team.

I don't know BR personally and will not cry if he goes, all I say is while at times, the group of players he manages underperformed, in other times he made more of this team than other managers would have done. Ie anoyne think that if DeBoer come he will make Toure and Lovern and new Cahill and Terry then he is unrealistic.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - what times has he made more of them? He certainly has done nothing but made them look worse most of this season, especially in Europe, where he has been shown to be tactically inept at best.}

04 Apr 2015 23:55:14
BR is responsible for everything good or bad that happens on his watch on the field of play and in the TW. Making excuses for him thru various avenues does not help the conversation. He and only, he will be facing the music come this summer. Not the fans, plyers Eds, you nor me.

05 Apr 2015 00:46:05
If you look at the new recruits during BR's time I think only Sturridge has improved the team. Minulet has done OK, but is he that much better than Pepe (cheaper maybe). Can looks like he will be one for the future and Markovic shows some promise. Lallana has obvious quality, but I have never seen the point in buying another player to link midfield and attack when cellar there were other far more pressing priorities.

For me, of our current squad, only Minulet, Flanno, Skrtl, Lucas, Henderson, Can Sterling and Sturrdige are good enough to be regular first team starters. You can add Cutinho to that, but I would play Sterling behind the front two.

Lovren, Sakho and Moreno are not good enough to play in a back four. Ilori? Who knows.

In midfield, I don't think Lallana was the type of player required. Especially not with Markovic also acquired at the same time. Alberto?

Up front, surely one good striker instead of Lambert, Balotelli, Borini, and Aspas?

Next season.

Minulet
Flan, Skrtl, X, X
Lucas
Henderson, Can
Sterling
Sturridge, X

X, X
Wisdom, X, Sakho, X
X
Allen, X
Cutiniho, Markovic
Origi, Ings, Ibe

25 man squad.

It means 3 new first teamers and 5 new squad players. Which equals another season of upheaval.

And it means trying to offload 15 current players:
Jones, Johnson, Manquillo, Toure, Lovren, Coates, Ilori, Enrique, Moreno, Alberto, Lallana, Lambert, Borini, Balloteli, Aspsa.

I know Lallana is a bit harsh, but we will need the cash and we can spare his position.

Well that was quite a role reversal from last season.

We were terrible and really could have let in a few more and the score wouldn't have flattered Arsenal.

Just a question for ed001 (if you're about): does Rodgers know that this current formation has been found out but he doesn't know what to change (or doesn't want to change) or does he not know that this formation is hindering the entire team? Don't know which option is more frustrating. *sigh*

BR definitely deserves another year, 3 years no trophies. Out CL in a dire group bar one team, 250 million spent. Likely 6th place finish.hes played some good football from time to time though and he's good with the media so that's a plus. To top it off sterling should be on $200k a week, if not he will be displacing Neymar or bale nex year. Guaranteed.

{Ed001's Note - yes, this system is stupid anyway, it only worked as surprise value. It is not a long term answer and requires virtually the entire team playing out of position. If Arsenal had not got lazy and stopped pressing from the front, we could have got slaughtered here. There are no out balls using this system, unless it catches the opposition by surprise, which it no longers does.}

04 Apr 2015 13:23:57
He's a strange one, Can. Definitely a talented lad, has strength and an engine, but the few times he has actually played center midfield for us, he seems to struggle tactically and with his positioning, both when we have and haven't got the ball.

That being said, he's not really going to improve his positional play at central midfield whilst playing as a right sided center back.

Tbh, the 343 did solve some problems that we we're having. But they were problems that really shouldn't have existed in the first place for my money.

1) It helped us get around our lack of a Premier League quality right back. A problem that wouldn't have existed if we'd retained either Martin Kelly or Andre Wisdom.

2) It papered over Skrtel's inability to cover ground and his weakness as a 1v1 defender. A problem that shouldn't have existed because we all saw it at least 18 months ago and Skrtel should've been replaced.

3) It helped us bring the ball out of the back by replacing the really deep DM with a center half, letting our other two centres keep the split higher up the pitch to give them more time on the ball to pick passes, and better angles for passes. But nearly every other worthwhile team in world football can bring the ball out of the back with a two centre backs. And Arsenal have today demonstrated that we can still be closed out of it anyway.

I would be very happy to have Can, Skertl and Sakho as our back three for next year as well. The problem is I don't think any of our other defenders are PL quality. Lovern, Toure, Johnson or Manquilolo, all get panicky very quickly. Today I thought Allen and Lucas were also really poor first half. Although, as with our game from the first day of the season our main problem was finishing and passing. Markovich is just not good enough, Moreno nothing to write home about, Cout's had one magic month and is back to where he was early season, and our 'it is not about money but I still expect more than 100k a week' is not a game changer.

I said all along that our important game this week is Blackbourn. CL has long gone. Just one word to all the 'BR go home guys' - if you think that a new manager will make from this squad a title contenders then you are kidding yourself. And the first thing you will hear from him is give me time. So there goes next season as well.

Agree1 Disagree4

and Can now red-carded. Icing on the cake.

If I was Brendan I would be dusting off my CV because he is definately going to need it. FSG are not going to be happy that 4th (and CL) is not very likely now - not after investing everything but the kitchen sink and their 401(k) into the club.

Toure and Sahko are awful. How premier league footballers can be so incompetent with the ball is beyond me. Thought father Ted was yet again wrong with his team selection. Really liverpool have been woeful this season and it's only the fact that the prem is such a poor league we're not in real trouble. I hope rodgers is told thanks for your services in the summer he's just not clever enough.

Agree0 Disagree3

{Ed001's Note - how are they incompetent with the ball? They are under orders to look for short passes and when they try and do so no one shows for it and then they are pressed. It is not their fault that there is no pass on, that is down to poor tactics. Both are very good technically. What is beyond me is how people can see so little when they watch a match, they focus so much on the ball they miss the important stuff!}

04 Apr 2015 14:52:57
Well that was an embarrassment. We could of been 3 down after 10 minutes but credit to Mignolet kept us in the game. Maybe should of been 1 up but a bad pass & Sterling can't get there. Why wasn't the boy sent of for giving the penalty away after being booked less than 5 minute's earlier, inconsistent refereeing. Said earlier that if we finished 5 to 7 would be a good season after the start. We could drop to 7th at the end of the weekend. Now How is Brendan going to lift this team for the Cup game? We aren't good enough, summer has to be a clear out. Not going to going to point finger's or name names but some just are not good enough to wear the red shirt.
Let's keep the faith even though we

Fanobip, as the Ed said, the three at the back has been found out now. Why would you continue to play this system when its clearly not working anymore. Br as the manager should have realised this 6 weeks ago. The performances have been getting worse all this time.

Agree2 Disagree0

04 Apr 2015 15:18:53
Fano, I'm not sure what point you're tying to make the "BR go home crowd". He's run his course mate. If we keep him, all he'll do is, at great cost to the owners, dismantle and rebuild a squad that he build and probably filter in and out of the CL places for another couple of seasons. That's not good enough.

No, I'm not expecting Klopp, or de Boer or Rafa to come in here an immediately win the league, but I'd have some confidence that they might do it in the next three, whilst I have none with Rodgers at this stage.

I don't think he's a bad manager in the same sense that Houllier was and Hodgson is, and he could become a very good manager at some stage in the future if he sat down and took a long look at himself and the people he brings in around him. But at the moment, he has glaring blindspots in his thought processes, routinely mismanages players, and keeps making tactical mistakes. And because of that I don't see us ever making a sustained improvement in terms of staying the CL places and challenging for the title on a season on season basis with Rodgers as manager or head coach.

The only reason to keep him is continuity, and the risk that someone else will be worse. That's not cutting for me any more, I'll take the risk, thanks.

Agree3 Disagree0

04 Apr 2015 16:55:39
Something-Red, I wouldn't mourn over BR if we get DeBoer, though he didn't prove himelf outside the one team Dutch league and didn't do anything impressive in the CL, but Rafa? Seriously? He is contenders for the disspointment of the season in Seria A where Napoli who some thought could be title contender are 5th and in a considerably less competitive league than ours. Kloop will not come and he also does terrible job in Dortmund. I any case I am much more worried about the quality of our squad then the manager. If, for the sake of the argument, we can bring De Boer or say Benzema, the latter will bring much greater difference to our future. And witha new manager, as I said, whoever it is, next season is gone (learning curve and all that). At least with BR we know it is no-excuses season.

Agree0 Disagree1

05 Apr 2015 03:25:23
Koop is a more successful manager than BR will ever be at the moment REGARDLESS of the one bad season in five years he is having. He has the trophies and pedigree to prove and I will welcome him with open arms along with De Boer for that matter.

With Sturridge being so injured prone, should he be considered our number one striker? If we bought a top striker, we could play both, and if Sturridge was injured play a 4-3-3. Only problem may be playing coutinho as an out and out left mid, but with can/lucas/hendo in the middle it should be strong enough! If we can sort out a back 4.

Tried to stay away from the Sterling issue but not bothered if he stays or goes. The club goes on with or without him.
Just want to comment on the john Barnes life story shown on TVs last night. I feel privileged to have been around when we signed him. Watched him all of his career with us. Said to the missus that if he was around now he would be up there with Messi and Ronaldo. What a player and, more importantly, what a man. Both inside and outside of the game. Some of the football played by him was unbelievable and unstoppable. It was a disgrace the way he was treated by the Ingurland "fans". I feel that I am a lucky man to have seen him in his prime. That is the type of person we want and, in my eyes, one of our real legends that made our history. He, along with the rest of the lads of that time were absolutely rocks during the Hillsborough aftermath. Thank you Barnesy. To Raheem I would say, watch the programme .

That's some cash to lose if he let's is contract run down. I think he's being wrongly advised to take on FSG. I hope he stays, but it's career. I like the lad.
