There must be at least 60% of us who wanted suare to leave, but he is that little bit of football magic that makes a difference. I'm not duluded to think he os Liverpool through and through but he is in the same bubble as maradona and messi.

Ynwa

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Sadly your right!

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes he's a gifted player, but definitely not in any realm close to Maradona and Messi's "bubble". let's get real here. Maradona and Messi could be in the argument for best players of all time. Suarez isn't in that conversation, and if he is, sadly that is a bit deluded.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hope Suarez scores a hatful for us this season. And then leaves.

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe 60% of the few fans that come on this site perhaps. But any fan that wanted us to lose a true world class player are the deluded ones.
Best bit of transfer business this summer by any club was us not losing Luis.

Agree0 Disagree0

Suarez is very much like Maradonna as I think their moral compass is about the same as well as the natural talent. Hate him all you like but you can't ignore the talent and if you separate the talent from the morality of the man, without saying he's right up there with Messi at the moment though I do think he's more passionate.
I'll be very happy seeing him deployed on the right/left of Sturridge when he returns as he will see a lot more of the ball and also draw the defence out, and pull the markers off sturridge and it would create so much more space for Coutinho to ping balls through. If Moses is on a loan to buy, it would be a great chance for moses to learn all he can from Suarez before he leaves.

Agree0 Disagree0

John B, there are lots of views on points like Suarez. To say someone with a different opinion is deluded is very narrow sighted. We have had an outstanding run without him. He is trouble. He wanted out and if it had taken going to court, well he has a record of doing this in the past. Yes I think there are real positives to having a unique player like Luis however it is about the total of the team and had we been able to pick up a quality wide player who worked in the set up, who didn't cause as much trouble and had extra cash to put towards whatever, would that have been so bad?

Agree0 Disagree0

My position on Suarez is entirely pragmatic. He's a disgraceful individual but a footballer capable of helping us finish top 4 in a very important season in the clubs history. Wider football isn't obsessed by his antics. We should not have sold him on his terms. We can play on his desire to get his nut down in a WC year to our advantage. However, all concerned understand his desires. He won't forgive or forget being forced to stay against his will. We will be scouring the world for players to replace him next summer (or even in January). If he scores 20 PL goals, doesn't get banned, we get top 4 and he is a WC superstar and we get our 50m then the plan was a triumph. If none of those things come to pass the picture might not be so pretty.

Quick question.
Joe Allen is obviously out injured. Should one or more of our C/M's, Gerrard, Lucas, Hendo get injured or sent off. Who do the Ed's see as cover/replacements?
We don't seem to have any cover/competition of any note . Certainly not of the calibre/experience required. {Ed030's Note - Texiera can provide cover,I wouldn't worry about having cover, The academy kids are more then capable of providing cover. }

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Alberto can play in midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

A certain Kolo Toure used to play in midfield for Arsenal. Was pretty good, apparently.

Done some snooping around on the united page searched sturridge name to see what they think of him, I found this funny haha!

Liverpool overpaying for players again!? Sturridge for £12 mil is laughable.
Sturridge imo has not proved himself consistantly at prem level and every time I watch him he is very greedy with a poor end product, surely they could have spent 12m on someone with more experience and a better goalscoring record, can't see him as the answer to what they need, I hope i'm proved right!

phil
I am not sure they would have signed him if anyone else were interested in him. The 1.5m he is pocketing from the deal would have helped too. He done well at Bolton so perhaps at another mid-table club he will do okay.

Sydney!
Hernandez cost half that and is 10 times the player
Very true. He is worth half that. I'm not even sure what other Prem teams he would get into? Definitely not better than say, Benteke or Pogrebnyak. I would rather have Ricky Lambert in my team!

SD
You all sound so bitter & childish haha grow up!

Alsky
Grant Holt > Daniel Sturridge
Stones and glass houses. Bebe. let's just stick with supporting MUFC.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hahah excellent work Square Tomato! You should post this in the Manchester United page ;)

To be honest, you could of left the names off and where you got it. I'd think it was posted here last winter. Lotta skeptics even here when we signed the lad. I'm just glad he's showing all of them wrong.

I read earlier that some man u fan said that they will end up 30 points ahead of Liverpool. Wow that's amazing. Last season Liverpool started the building process with BR. Its not over yet and we are still building but we are in a much better position in terms of first team and squad this year than we were last season.

In my opinion I think that we will battle it out with man u for a champions league place and I might sound crazy but I'm also feel that they should write of their chances of winning the league this season.

I am very excited about Liverpool even before the season started as I always believed BR is the right man to bring us glory.

Here's to the return of the mighty LiverpoolFc. YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Only if we collapse completely and Ferguson takes over during the International break this week.

Agree0 Disagree0

That particular fan in question is Sydney! He also prophesied Daniel Sturridge failing at LFC ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

Sydney is a chelsea fan, ask him about his love of chelsea and see what he says, I remember when blair mayne used to go on the man u page and stir it up, a huge row developed and sydney was outed as a chelsea fan by his own man u posters, he rants pro glazer propaganda about finances etc etc but most of his posts are good but biased towards utd, he used to tell posters that the glazers were good owners etc etc, i'm on these sites years but i'm only using dubred68 since we had to log in

really think our next 5 games are all definitely winable, I know kiss of death and all that but I just got a feeling were going to carry on grinding out the results against the so called weaker teams, the grit and determination we have showed so far this season is not like the Liverpool of old so yeah can see us with at least 22 points after first eight games, with studge on fire, the big strong presence of moses in the forward line and of course suarez to come back the team is looking on paper at least very formidable, so by the 2nd nov when we play arsenal we could be in a very healthy posistion playing with bags of confidence and belief, this thinking positive mantra of rogers is starting to rub off on even the most pesimistic of fans lol

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree, but, if we change formation and have a go a the smaller teams it may be costly! What I mean by that is having Moses come in so that coutinho can play in the middle, that Would mean taking Henderson out. By doing that we gain a far greater force going forward but we will get hit on the brake time and time again. That's what happened last year againts WBA, villa an co. Taking Henderson out would mean taking a bit of that determination out, it's a tough call! I'd hate to be Rodgers!

Agree0 Disagree0

I quite understand the predicament, but the good thing is the fact that our substitutes will now be real game changers tactically. What I mean is, if we're playing Moses for Henderson and being overrun or out-muscled in the centre of the park, Henderson can make an impact.
Similarly, if we need to place more emphasis on attack, Moses can be replaced by Aspas and then he and Suarez could switch flanks. Of course all of this is just hypothetical by assuming Moses becomes a starter, I'm not so sure.

But what it does mean is that BR will have quality options all over the park and that will aid him in implementing or changing strategies according to the situation. This, I think will mean we'll have more control of the game?

Eds.very impressed with the start to the season also with our additions in the window many people sayin our next 6 games are dead certs 3 pointers I disagree Swansea, soton, west brom will be just as tough as the Utd and villa games need to address each game by game I also feel injuries could hamper our good start what's your opinions great site ynwa reddave {Ed001's Note - I think we have a much stronger squad, but we need to take it one game at a time, the next game is all that matters.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The 3 teams mentioned all managed to beat us at least once last season. Albion twice. Live for the moment.

Joe Allen being injured. what happens if one or more of our C/M's get injured or a suspension?
We don't have any cover/replacements foe Gerrard. Hendo & Lucas! Not of the Calibre/experience required. I'm talking about players whose natural position is C/M . Not defenders or forwards who have never played for us in that position.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

You seem to have forgotten Coutinho and Alberto?

Agree0 Disagree0

We have plenty of cover mate.
We only play 2 midfielders really, with the other being in a more attacking roll.
So we have Lucas, gerrard, Henderson, Allen all fighting for the 2 places. I'm sure a few more of the squad would manage perfectly fine there as well.

Agree0 Disagree0

Alberto is a midfielder isn't he?

Agree0 Disagree0

Anyone think Texeira might get a run if we get injuries in CM?

Agree0 Disagree0

Toure can play in that position. He has played there before and he's experienced.

Agree0 Disagree0

Alberto

Agree0 Disagree0

Nick, I found this surprising also as I thought he was a striker but Alberto can play CM, AM, LW & ST and is competent in all positions.

Agree0 Disagree0

We have Toure, Illori, Alberto and Texeria (from academy) to play that position. Hasn't happened before but Agger will do well in that position too IMO.

Clemence was arguably one of the best ever and its rare ti get gk like him today

Agree0 Disagree0

Aziz, Ray Clemence has just been voted the best Shankly signing, he cost £18,000 and was a fantastic keeper with the agility of a cat, and was known for his defender quality as well racing from his goal to clear dangerous thru balls that got past the defense, an awesome GK, you should seek out any video of him you can find.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Sep 2013 00:34:52
Redmersey, can't remember clemence having a problem with his kicking, he had a good left peg. I honestly thought he was better than Shilton because he made saves look easy when stilton made easy saves look hard, no dramatics from clemence.
Got to say early 70's onwards was a great era for some great keepers, I saw the back end of Gordon Banks and a lot of Pat Jennings, remember him for Spurs saving 2 pens at Anfield (keegan & smith)and sometimes he claimed crosses with one (very large) hand. Another decent keeper was Paul Cooper of Ipswich, saved loads of pens.
Alanhuyton

Agree0 Disagree0

70's sure was a great era for keepers.

Clemence, Jennings, Shilton, Sepp Maier, Dino Zoff, the Czech (or was it Polish) keeper - forgot his name.

Less so in the 80's. With one exception: Neville Southall. What a keeper he was. Damn.

04 Sep 2013 18:27:30
If one of the Liverpool Eds and supporters can answer this. How good was Ray Clemence? And has there ever been a goalkeeper like him in the recent past?

I look foward to your replies. {Ed001's Note - he was a bit before my time to be honest.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Liverpool's best ever goalkeeper by a mile!

Agree0 Disagree0

I remember him signing as an 18 year old from Scunthorpe and he couldn't believe he'd just come from stacking deck chairs on Skegness beach to a club like Liverpool.

Clemence must have saved Liverpool 15 - 20 points every season, he was that good. He was very agile and pulled off many flying saves. He was also good at coming out for the ball in the air. If any opposing strikers got in the way they just got clattered, as he al;ways led with his knees. He certainly commanded the penalty area and gave his defenders great confidence.

I'm not surprised he was voted Shankly's best ever signing as £18,000 was a snip for the service he gave. If there is a slight criticism, his kicking wasn't the best, so it's difficult to see how he would have coped with the change in the back pass rule, although I'm sure he would have adapted.

Agree0 Disagree0

I seem to remember someone telling me he was left handed and right footed which gave him the perfect balance that a goalie needs, not sure how true but I do recall it. IMO Clem was the best ever, great communicator, controlled his box and was an excellent shot stopper.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm one of the people on here that was lucky enough to watch ( or unlucky ) to watch LFC from the Boys pen when Phil Taylor was manager and Dick White was the captain - Taylor was the man responsible for starting the dynasty of great backroom staff that Shankly turned into folklore ( Reuben Bennett, Ronnie Moran and Bob Paisley ). I have seen the great paleyrs of the last 50 years - Clemence has no equal as a keeper, he was better than Shilton, although England managers seemed to prefer Shilton, and the stand out outfield player, without any equal, or even close was Dalglish - when I think of the great teams and players I have been privileged to watch from the KOP, when there was nearly 28,000 stood up on the hallowed ground, I feel I have been blessed.

Agree0 Disagree0

He was very good. I still remember him in his Green/Red outfit. He was very good in the air, always had sure hands and directed the defense really well. He was far better than Grobbelaar and Reina (the two that I would place after him)

Agree0 Disagree0

What about the legendary Elisha Scott. over 450 appearances. best keeper of his era

Agree0 Disagree0

I didn't see him play but I met him once when I sold the adverts for sHoot magazine and he was a columnist. What a lovely fella. Loads of time for people and a true gent

Hey just wondering if either Barcelona or Napoli bought that CB they were looking for?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

As far as I know Napoli only signed Albiol and Barcelona didn't bring in a CB.

Hunter on Revista said something along the lines of one guy at Barca wanted Agger, the other Luiz and the new manager didn't fancy getting into the middle of it, furthermore he said the manager had not had time to properly assess the squad.

Whether that is accurate or not make of it what you will.

A lot been said about Henderson this season, 99% ultra positive. I think his best attributes are his engine and his attitude however they alone are not enough for me. Usually your centre mid (dependent on type of centre mid) is THE best in the team at at least one of the following: passing, tackling, shooting, dead ball situations and proficient in most if not all, unfortunately Henderson isn't. I give him great credit for coming through a bad spell and he has worked very hard and improved a lot however those who think he could replace Gerrard should think again. When picked the lad will get my support for his attitude and commitment but he is not good enough for us if we want/expect to win leagues and cups.
Alanhuyton

Agree0 Disagree0

Still think Sakho is intended to replace Agger.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Sep 2013 18:07:25
More of a question than an opinion, but who thinks Henderson might make a decent wingback? Seen as there are a number of centre backs at the club, and that Johnson is not exactly Baresi at the back. Just think that with the players we have at present, 3-5-2 may be the most effective, with Enrique/Cissokho and Henderson the two wingbacks.

Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd like him to focus on being a centre midfielder, he has so much potential and it's now showing, he is strong, quick, good feet and a good range of shooting and passing, add that to his work ethic and he has all the tools to be a great player for us, as well as a good attitude to the game.

Agree0 Disagree0

Very interesting thought, maybe against certain teams because let's face it hendo is an athlete! I would like to see him in that role personally

Agree0 Disagree0

Henderson wing back? hmmm no. Anybody remember him being played woefully out of position at right midfield by Kenny? Did not work. Being an athlete is fine as is versatility but sometimes playing a player in his best position is just fine. Henderson's is in centre midfield were he is doing very well, why change it?

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said Seano - Kenny almost ruined the lad, by doing the Liverpool thing over the last 20 years - playing players out of their natural position.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd agree with Mark & Seano. In the long run, Henderson would make a suitable replacement for Gerrard and playing him in that central midfield role would only make him better.

Now this media Ozil love fest is all well and good but before we start getting player envy let's not forget we have an interchangeable attacking 3 of sturridge, Suarez and our very own magician Coutinho. That my fellow red men and women is an irresistible and fearsome offensive 3 that will destroy most teams this season if they stay fit. Yes Ozil is supremely talented but he is only one man what happens if geroud gets injured I highly doubt bedntner will step into the breach! Yes Walcott may go up front and score goals but we can't worry about that we have to take care of our own business. even if we get injuries were more than capable of winning matches with our 'group'. is it me but all of a sudden the transfer window is closed and spurs don't seem like world beaters anymore. let's just take care of what we have control over and the rest will look after itself. not saying we're going to be champions but funnier things have happened. did someone say Blackburn rovers?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

To be honest up until you mentioned him not much been said on here bit of grudging respect they got a good player but I went over to the arsenal page to see how much they were cheesing over the signing of him instantly regreted it there fans are deluded suggesting rogers will be the first manager sacked whilst forgetting they needed at least 5 players got 2 and ozil was not a position they were struggling in I couldn't read any more I felt dirty just been on that page had to get a shower was like the crying game shower scene those arsenal fans now think there nailed on for cl maybe the league and out of our managers I expect wenger to be gone before rogers

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed, our front 3 is magical when on song, if we have a consistent season from our squad we can finish top four! For me the league is out of our reach ATM but aim for the stars I hear ya ATL!

Ozil is a top class player and will only improve Arsenal, but looking at their squad they still haven't addressed the areas which needed addressing IMO, CB, RB, CDM and a striker. They will still be strong though no doubt.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said Giblet. Went on it myself and whilst I laughed initially that soon turned to bewilderment. They genuinely think he's going to bring them to the next level whereas in reality they will be scrapping for 4th as usual. It's not like they have signed a Messi or a Ronaldo or even a Suarez! His goal scoring record is pretty abysmal when you consider the position he plays in and the relatively poor quality of the league. Something like 27 goals in 150 odd appearances.

Even saw one fool post that he thinks he'll be a better signing than Suarez would have been!

He is a very good player but on his own won't make a massive difference to them.

Agree0 Disagree0

Transport yesterday an Arsenal fan phoned in and said"42 million for a player we've already got, brilliant! " . Ha classic

Agree0 Disagree0

While ozil is an amazing player he only marginally improves thier actual squad.
If you wrote a list of positions they needed to fill then his would be quite low down.
Terrible window for them in my opinion, but I can see ozil being a very good player for them.
If that makes sense.

Agree0 Disagree0

Your right they desperately need a striker. Seems like a 'marquee' signing to keep the fans happy.

He could well ensure them top 4, which seems like Arsenals only ambition in recent years.

You mention his goal record, but he has created more goals than anyone else in Europe for the last 5years.

Agree0 Disagree0

I can't say a bad word about ozil. Great signing. Werner has got himself out of jail there

Agree0 Disagree0

Oezil is class player. Top drawer. Not what arsenal needed at all but he will make them marginally better.

As far as his wonderful assists record, it is a little bit biased towards greatness when you consider that he was passing/setting up Ronaldo who has scored 147 goals in 138 games. I'll wait and see how good Oezil does setting up Giroud and co in the epl before passing judgement. He'll do well, I'm sure but I doubt he will hit the same heights as his assist number in the spainish league.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ozil is the closest thing to Zidane I have seen.

Ball is glued to his feet, he just glides past people with that turn of pace, and he "takes pictures", as they say.

There is no player quite like him in the world. Am amazed Real sold him.

Agreed he is not really what Arsenal needed.

But I won't lie: I am jealous they got him.

The best way to increase the amount of english players in the PL is to block all foreign transfers under 10 million pound. That way people can't buy cheap player to fill a gap instead they would have to get a kid from the youth team if they couldn't afford that for example. All players in academys should also be English.0 foreign transfers in below the age of 23, giving youth players 2 extra years to prove themselves before simply being released at 21 before theve even played a first team game. The 10m block you may say hinders smaller clubs eg championship clubs but then every team that level or below has a 1st team full of english kids and an academy full behind that. More competition, bigger pools of players, better chance & longer chance of finding gems & I've just fixed English football as far as england is concerned obviously to start the quality of the PL would drop but then the kids would get the chance to show they are capable

Believable0 Unbelievable0

But only Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs can afford players over 10M so basically every other team would be utter sh!t

Agree0 Disagree0

There are so many things wrong with that it's tough to know where to start, but I'm sure that preventing EU nationals from plying their trade in the EPL wouldn't stand up in court.

Agree0 Disagree0

I like the idea to have more british players coming through the english leagues but i'm not sure about the way you are suggesting, everybody would just increase the english players prices knowing that they are more wanted, anyway, I too believe that we need more british talent in the epl, maybe a cap on how many foreigners are allowed in starting 11's?

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Sep 2013 18:26:51
30 years ago that might have worked. The problem you would have now is that bigger teams would go through and cherrypick anyone above slightly decent leading to increasing gaps between top teams and everyone else. The level that English clubs could compete at on a European stage would be reduced, because having a smaller pool of players to work with means less good players. This would in turn lead to players from abroad being less interested in joining this league, further reducing the quality of player coming in.

The problem we have in England is not at the top level, its at the very bottom. Substandard coaching means that too many talented youngsters are not developing enough to make it into academies, and most that are have already developed bad habits.

My solution personally (after fixing the coaching) would be to include Castilla like teams into the lower reaches of the league structure with strict limitations on the age of players and nationality of players making them up. Something like;
No players over the age of 24 (some sort of exception for long term injuries)
No less than 6-7 English players in the starting 11
No less than 10-11 English players in the matchday squad
Some sort of built in termination clause for teams below the top division

Then allow these teams to work their way up to no higher than a division below the first team.
Its a long term solution I know, it's almost certainly flawed, there are surely economical or systematic problems and it's probably naive. It's just my idea. Any thoughts?

Agree0 Disagree0

Arsenal don't mind bidding 10,000, 001 I've heard?

Agree0 Disagree0

I couldn't give a damn about the England team to be honest. If you weaken the PL teams, what chance have we got when we get into the CL? If England can't scrape together 11 decent players from the Premier League that's their problem.

Agree0 Disagree0

Then we wouldn't have got coutinho or agger or skrtel and aspas to name a few a better way would be to stop english clubs over charging for english player I think they were saying 12 million for will hughes from derby why pay 12 when can go abroad buy a less risk player for less coutinho 8 million for example or put lower price on english players with higher incentives if they turn out to be good players zaha was 15 million carzola the same I know who I'd rather have in my team

Agree0 Disagree0

It really is something that needs to be addressed at the youth level and then filter up over the years.

Not sure how the youth programs work in England (although if someone would like to explain it I'd love to know!), but in America we've gotten slightly better about it over the years (especially the youth girls side which is generally fantastic), but we still have major issues as well even though we have the largest youth soccer organization in the world.

Agree0 Disagree0

Same here Nick, besides if England never got knocked out in the quarter finals we would have nothing to moan about

Agree0 Disagree0

The Fa need to stop deceiving themselves until english players stop being overpriced it can never change.
Clubs don't get value for money spent on them, and all those ex players coaches and fa do is avoid the real issue and keep complaining why clubs keep signing foreign players
They don't represent value for money

Agree0 Disagree0

Here's a novel idea.
Let more foreigners into the premier league.
Why?
English players will learn how to play modern European football by being around continental players, not the garbage they are currently learning (bar a couple of accademys).
Here's another idea:
Let the England manager be foreign again, Sven and fabio have the best records in modern times and it's no coincidence.
Also let youth teams have foreign coaches so they learn how to play properly from grassroots level.

Sorted.

Now where do I sign to be an FA advisor and how many millions will I earn?

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said Nick. We've got a big population. Bigger than Spain.

The problems lies deeper than imported players.

The truth is English football has been pretty archaic, in coaching a practice, while other nations moved on.

We're getting there now, not as much as it could under Roy. But there's more technical ability and pace in the team than there has been for a while.

I think by the Euros we might have an England team that can really compete.

Agree0 Disagree0

As long as England keeping picking archaic managers like Psycho and Hodgson, they will not ever reach their potential. Also, much of the issue starts in the juniors, not the u18 and u21 but u7 and u8. For all of Hendo's qualities, I think he is very much England. Great heart, great engine, capable of excellence but so often bluster over intelligence and finesse. Not having a go at the lad as I think he has great potential and some great qualities just some limitations as well.

Hi Ed 02, I’m back in the country for a short while and met up with my brother the other week for a beer. Turns out he uses the sight to! Anyway he is adamant that you are married to an agent? Don’t suppose your going to settle the bet we have on it? Lol {Ed002's Note - My current wife has no interest in football at all. I have an ex-wife who does - but not as an agent.}

Hi to all,

Presuming that BR plays Suarez when he's back from the ban, and presuming that he wants Coutinho playing attacking midfield who do you see being dropped? Aspas may be one but do you see Henderson being dropped after how he has played?

I was just after some thoughts on formations, tactics etc.

Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think at the moment it would be Moses for Aspas until he adapts. Then Suarez for Henderson.
With Sturridge CF Suarez LF Moses RF and Coutinho AM.

Agree0 Disagree0

GK Mignolet
LB Enrique
LCB Agger
RCB Sakho
RB Johnson
LDM Lucas
RDM Gerrard
LAM Suarez
CAM Coutinho
RAM Moses
CF Sturridge

Although I would try to rearrange that play Henderson instead of Moses. But I believe the above is what BR will play.

Agree0 Disagree0

Imagine team will change dependent on who we play, if we play hull or palace could see us swapping hendo for Saurez but against stronger teams at home would like Henderson to stay in and Saurez replace Aspas and away against top clubs could go 5-3-2 with Sturridge/Saurez up front and gerrard/lucas/coutinho in the midfield

Theres a wonderful sign of anticipation and genuine excitement going around with the Liverbirds at the moment. I don't think I have been this excited for a young team sincee 2008.
We have a hungry young manager who I hope is here for years, and we have a hungry team who are out to prove that despite there age they can tussle with the big boys.
Ill be first to accept that when we had a massive clear out with players I was worried with the the out come of the youngster, but they have excelled we have added to that quality and now bring on the next game.

The Red Men are back.

Well i'm please the transfer window is over and done with, hopefully some people will regain their sanity now. I must admit i'm surprised Suarez is still here, while we all know he's a great playerbut is he worth the trouble? Between now and next summer he will do something stupid and bring more embarrassment to the club, while he is so insistent on a release clause in his contract its a shame the club can't have a clause of their own, something along the lines of, 'if you get banned for any reason you wave your loyalty bonus'. Unfortunately that's not how football works. {Ed002's Note - No, that is not possible.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I know ed and while I don't agree with keeping a player against his will Suarez is a hard fella to feel sorry for.

Eds quick question regarding tiago ilori I was reading an article saying roy hodgson was wanting to try talking him into converting to playing for england as he was born in london does that mean he goes towards the english players quota or is it depending on him choosing to play for england or portugal thanks {Ed002's Note - He is not home grown which is the quota you are thinking of.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

When this dual nationality thing happens ed. at what stage is the player tied to one country? u18 level? or being capped for the senior? what is it that stops them taking up the other option basically is my question

Benny I think its full international if I remember right has to be competitive as when zaha and sterling played in a england friendly it said until they played a competitive international thet could still play for other countries they could represent

After reading some posts on here I'm a bit confused how u think sakho will replace agger in the line up? Maybe the owners have a vision he will replace him in a couple of years, but there's noway we've bort sakho to replace agger just because he's left footed, I highly doubt we payed 17m for a defender to sit in the bench either, he will start along side agger at the back, imo it's the strongest pairing in the league.

The teams playing well I wouldn't change a thing, just put sakho in for toure, an Suarez in for aspas. We'll be very strong defensively and very strong up top in attack with cout stur an Suarez! Taking Henderson out an putting Moses on the wing is an option so cout can play centrally but it's a gamble because we'll miss the work rate of Henderson an that determination. Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We certainly have options!

Agger has looked ok so far, but at the same time, somewhat liable to give a goal away. I think out defenders will most likely change depending on who we're playing against (could see Sakho/Toure being useful against a team like arsenal, when they counter with massive place, as opposed to agger/Sakho against someone like Swansea who look to build from the back, and maybe Agger/Toure against the likes of Hull, where they will rely on their main striker to really do the business) but I'm no real expert, so I could easily be very wrong

Agree0 Disagree0

He was sitting on the bench at psg, the main reason he left there and you think he would be coming here to be a bench warmer again?brendan already said he can play lcb and lb, lcb is agger's position which means he is here to replace agger
We are not madrid or barcelona if a player of that quality joins us its most likely he knows he would be a starter.like when brendan signed mignolet and kept lying he was competition?Agger being sold next summer looks likely

Agree0 Disagree0

One thing for sure is that we won't use different defenders against different teams unless there is an injury, its all about consistency to build and understanding.

It a difficult decisions to make for BR and i'm glad he has to make it. For now I think we'll continue with what we've been playing and what's been successful and sakho to come into the team slowly.

Also I think we'll use cissoko a lot as a substitute for left mid brining him on in the 70th min to close out games and have that extra man

Focus on Swansea! YNWA

Agree0 Disagree0

Kelly-Toure-Agger-Sakho

Sounds like a great back line to me, let the manager worry about who to pick and we can just enjoy watching the clean sheets continue.
Then next 3 league games will be a marker as to how our season pans out, if the lads can pick up at least 7 points who knows where the season could take us.

City and Chelsea will most likely take up the top 2 spots but so far no one else has looked strong, Arsenal have signed a top player in Ozil but still haven't addressed any of the glaring issues at the back. United are missing a spark of creativity so the longer Kagawa doesn't play Moyes puts pressure on himself, however Van Persie and Rooney will get them goals. Finally Spurs they have signed some players with great potential, notice I didn't say great players, all those signings need time to gel hopefully by that point Liverpool have too many points to catch.

Agree0 Disagree0

Very unlikely Agger is going to be dropped. In my opinion Agger/Sakho will be the first choice centre backs (Skrtel & Toure there if any injuries occur), its possible to play with 2 left footed centre backs just as it is to play with 2 right footed ones. It also helps that Sakho, Toure and Ilori are all versatile players which means when the inevitable injuries and suspensions occur we have quality back up. Our squad depth, defensively, looks a hell of a lot better than it did last season.

Agree0 Disagree0

I just means we can rotate our defence every month or every two games.
all defenders are quality so therez no question of they being out of form.
and 4 defenders get half a season each which is good utilisation,
i don't see the harm in having two defensive partnerships
toure sakho
agger skrtel

Agree0 Disagree0

But! Suarez's work rate is also high it will mean less work from our midfield players.

Just a quick enquiry to all the posters out there. During the transfer window, I posted up multiple reviews on potential targets for the club. They seemed to be very successful in terms of feedback. I thank everybody who read them, and especially those who gave me positive feedback or constructive criticism. It was all appreciated. What I am going to offer now, (If you would like) is a regular scout review each week on maybe 1, 2 or even 3 players who are currently at the club already. E.g. A review on Skrtel, Agger and Toure or Aspas, Suarez and Sturridge etc. Accademy players are no problem also. I don't even mind if you'd like me to give you a scout review on rival teams players like say Hazard, Ozil and Kagawa comparing them to our own players. I will be completely unbiased in each piece, and I am open 100% to requests. So if there is any of you out there who'd like this to become a regular thing, why not kick it off with a request of your own?

Like I say, It is only if people think it would be a good idea, and if you'd enjoy reading it. I don't want to waste your time, my time, or the Eds time with 800+ word reviews that people are not enjoying!

Thanks again though, and this is of course subject to the editors being okay with me continuing to post such large reviews on the LFC Blogs page.

It sounds like a really good idea man, although it might be an idea to wait a few weeks so that the season is past the early phase and heading rather quickly into mid-season.

Although saying that, I think Scurrle, Hazard, Mata would be good, because I can't understand mourinho's thoughts towards Mata atm.

Good idea Adam especially now that all the madness is over. I was particularly impressed with Fabian Delph when we played 'villa', maybe a review would be interesting!

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes I read them and enjoyed them adam.
I wonder whether you might want to approach the sports editor of a newspaper like the guardian, send them those as an example of what you can do. you never know you might get a paid gig for analysis {Ed002's Note - That won't work, sorry. A local paper might be interested.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Every one I have read so far has been so insightful and given a really fair and unbiased view focusing on all relevant aspects about each player. Highly admirable that you take time out to write them and it helps the ed's too in terms of stopping repetitive questions so great work Adam, I look forward to reading the rest of them.

I think Jolly Red hit it on the head with academy player reviews as I watch a few U21 games here and there but have never managed to have a good enough look at who is likely to make the push for the first team. So if possibly one or two academy player reviews could be done at some point that would great.

Thanks Adam, keep up the good work.

Adam Thanks for all the reviews and really enjoyed everyone one of them.
I was going to ask you for this favour just wanted the deadline day to pass.
If you can please do a similar type of comparison between our players and rival player of the same age, position, maybe nationality for eg henderson, cleverly, mccarthy, Nzonzi. or wingers like sterling, Ibe, Nathan Redmon, Zaha.
I feel in this way we can get to know our players well that is what we do with other posters compare them with our rival players.

Ed002, do you think its worth a shot contacting some kind of news distributor then? YNWAdam {Ed002's Note - I am not sure what you mean by "news distributor" but one option would be some sort of Blog - just go to Blogger.com. As I say, local papers are an option and perhaps writing a summary of the weekends games would interest hospital radio.}

Hi eds I'd like to thank you's for the great site you have, I have spent endless hours on the site the last week or so.
I see ed001 said we signed a young lad from Real Madrid just before deadline, this leads me on to Suarez.
Why would Real Madrid deal with Liverpool after the rejected bid and John Henry allegedly saying "don't call back".
Maybe I am reading to much between the lines, but would you say a deal is all ready in place for next summer for Suarez and this why he has come out said he is happy at Liverpool. I was hoping to see the back of him this transfer. {Ed002's Note - You don't want to hang on to the words that someone was likely paraphrasing what a third party told him.}

Do you think our tactics are to score first and then defend the lead until the end of the game?

Maybe this is why BR has strengthened the defence so much, to make sure all defenders are kept on their toes and play well. With the great amount of competition for places defenders will defend as if it were for their lives.

I think BR has learnt now that possession and all out attacking doesn't necessarily win you games and he has altered our tactics in order to grind out the wins when we are leading.

It will be interesting to see how we cope when we concede a goal first. Thankfully, we have scored first in our 3 league games and defended the lead fantastically.

Credit to BR for his tactical adjustments, and credit to the team for their perfect execution. I have watched many teams play so far this season and not many have impressed me. It will definitely close this season but let's take it one game at a time and and not look too far ahead.

There is a series of. tactical articles on the official site that you might want to have a look at

Agree0 Disagree0

I can't see that being our tactic every game but I think it makes sense to alter tactics depending on the opponents. We had about 5 good chances against Stoke and if it wasn't for Begovic having a worldie we would have won far more comfortably. It made sense for the last 10 minutes to tighten up and, although we got lucky with the penalty save deserved the win.

Aston Villa away is tricky. They have bags of pace and instinctively play to counter attack. The tactics of playing deeper nullified that threat and it showed. Except for Benteke's chance late in the second half Villa didn't really do an awful lot offensively and by the end looked like they had ran out of idea's. Compared to Arsenal and how exposed they were I think our tactic's were right for the opposition.

United games are often tight and tetchy. We scored early and then looked to counter. United are dangerous always so staying tight at the back was essential - like the Villa game Uniteds chances were minimal. Van Persie had one opportunity and that's it. Against the best teams it is unfeasible to keep hunting for the second goal. Our tactics will vary from team to team but I think so far we've been spot on. 1-0 isn't the most attractive result but it is 3 points - Its been a while since we have been capable of grinding out results, ability to do that will be the difference between a Europa League spot and a Champions League spot.

Agree0 Disagree0

In the game against Man U Rodgers replaced like for like, Sterling for Aspas initially, an attacking player for an attacking player.This substitution would signal an intent to push on and score more goals leaving the opposition no option but to continue to defend.Last season, on too many occasions did we replace an attacking player with a defensive player an invite the opposition on, we all know what happened. Trying to park the bus with twenty minutes to go against the top teams considering their respective attacking acquisitions will prove even more futile than last season. Yes we have strengthened at the back and are undoubtedly better equipped in that department but with the flair players we now have, keeping teams under the cosh must be the way forward!

Agree0 Disagree0

Our tactic is to score more than the opposition

Hello eds and fellow reds.

So the transfer window is closed and like most red fans I am also happy with the signing and very excited about the league position (although top 4 is still the realistic target)

Wanted to get everyones opinion on how the squad will be used in the coming season and how versatile are our new players.

With so many center backs in the squad now I think BR might be thinking of playing a 3-5-2 formation with Johnson or Kelly and Enrique or cissoko as wing back and Sakho, Agger and Toure as are CB. This would give us good width

Also which players do you think can play in different positions? I believe cissoko can play left wing and sakho can play lb as well but what about the rest of them?

Can toure and Ilori pay as a CDM? and are also cover players for lucas?

What does everyone think?

I would rather us play 3412 if lucas were to be injured than play one of the CB's out of position.

hey eds
this is one for ed002,
i have heard and read in many newspapers that EPL has been paid 1.6billion dollars in TV rights by various broatcasting channels ( BTsports for 38matches and ssn for all matches) and that this will be divided in among clubs. which means tv rights have added to all clubs revenue and hence EPL had a record transfer window.

if we break 1.6 billion by 20 it amounts to 80 million a club. ( which is just a lot of money for a club like let's say hull).
is this how it works? or the money just goes somewhere else? may be the FA instead?

also when a club bids a certain amount for a player, and it gets accepted are taxes involved in the bid?
if not who pays them?

i know you don't answer money related stuff? but you said you could do one after the window?
thanks

{Ed002's Note - Dealing first with the UK broadcast monies, they are divided (1) 50% equally between clubs, (2) 25% for those clubs hosting live matches, (3) 25% based on performance (league position). The international broadcast monies are divided (3) 100% equally between the clubs.

The figure you have (1.6 billion) looks like an annual UK broadcast figure in US$. The correct figure is a little over £3B over a three year period – so about £1B a year from the UK rights. This is up from about £600M.

Taking Liverpool as an example, last season they were paid a total of a little over £54.8M in broadcast payments comprising (1) £13.8M, (2) £11.5M, (3) £10.5M and (4) £18.9M.

As for transfer fees, what is paid by the buying club would typically include:

(a) Transfer fee - the big number.
(b) Any levy applied by the local FA – 5% for the EPL.
(c) Tax due on the transfer fee – typically this will be VAT (at varying rates across Europe) some or all of which should be reclaimable.
(d) Agent fees – this may be to one or more agents (as an example, Liverpool have spent £25M plus VAT on agent fees over the past three years leading to this window).
(e) Tax due on the agent fees – typically this is VAT at the local rate where the agent bills from – it is not reclaimable.
(f) Intermediary fees – this may be to one or more sponging leeches(what do you mean you have a super agent?) .
(g) Tax due on the Intermediary fees – typically this is VAT at the local rate where the Intermediary bills from – it is not reclaimable.
(h) Signing on fee to the player (possibly including non-reclaimable VAT if the player is VAT registered).
(i) Legal fees.
(j) VAT on legal fees which is reclaimable.
(k) Moving/relocation costs for the player.
(l) VAT on moving/relocation costs which is reclaimable.
(m) Paying up insurance costs to the selling club (sometimes waived).
(n) Variables and tax on variables which may or may not be reclaimable) – these would typically include legal fees, moving/relocation costs, etc.. This was off the top of my head and I may well have forgotten something. The big numbers are the transfer fee, agent fees (as an example, Liverpool have spent £25M plus VAT on agent fees over the past three years) and possibly other intermediary fees (what do you mean you have a super agent?}

What is paid by the buying club would typically include:

(a) If the player is under 24, a Solidarity contribution paid to his previous clubs responsible for his training - this is 5% of the transfer fee received.
(b) Any monies owed to the player if he did not request a transfer – again this is 5% of the transfer fee received.
(c) Any monies owed to the player in terms of his contract (typically outstanding wages and bonuses).}

Utter Tosh!
Only messing!
I completely understand now why you don't answer questions about finance.
Have you ever thought of running an on line clinic for people with money problems? If you ever do. give me a shout!

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed, any chance you could briefly explain the complexities with the buy out clause?
BBC tried to explain the problem with the Man U deal was that the club would be paying the player the money to buy himself out of his contract? and this would then appear as earnings for the player to the Tax man, and would therefore mean Man U would have had to have paid a lot extra to cover his tax costs? if that makes sence.

{Ed002's Note - This is a horribly complex area not least because they are written under individual national laws.

The "buy out" clause is legally binding between a club and a player. The "buy out" is effectively what it says - a means for the player to buy himself out of the contract. As an example, if a player wishes to buy himself out of a contract, he pays the applicable FA the amount of the "buy out" clause effectively becoming a free agent. The problem is that in most cases a player would need to obtain that money from the buying club - and this is fraught with issues regarding "tapping up" and, of course, taxation as it can be seen as income for the player and would therefore be subject to income tax. There was a test case about the taxation issue in Spain about three years ago.

A "release clause" is far more common in that it gives a figure that the club would accept for the sale of a player to another club - but it is not legally binding except where both parties are in the same country, and even then that only applies in certain countries - notably Spain and Portugal. These are normally unreasonably high figures (Messi at Barcelona for example) introduced to act as a deterrent for hostile bids - and even then the club could easily block a move. However, if a club does agree to match a release clause then the club would be obliged to ask the player if he is interested. Examples are Goetze who decide he wanted to move and Cavani who, regardless of two offers that were made in 2012 that matched or equated to his then "release clause" recognised Napoli did not sell and accepted a new package. Since then Napoli said they will listen to offers of €60M or so and indeed accepted a bid this summer.

There is then the becoming popular "termination clause" which is binding between the player and the club and if met would see an offer from anywhere accepted and the player given the opportunity to make a call on a move. This overcomes the issues associated with "buy out" clauses as the money would be paid by one club to another.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Anyone else think ed002 might be on the drug limitless?Your knowledge of football is just insane

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks Ed, I would have imagined Utd would have known this though, so suspect there was a lot more behind that deal.

Agree0 Disagree0

Lol limitless.

This is great knowledge ed and I think illustrates just how complex transfers and generally the financial side of football is. It sounds like there are a lot of middle men taking their slice of the pie but doing very little to justify the money they are making. {Ed002's Note - If you want to do business with high-profile players all sorts of people will try and get a slice of the deal. There are people out there trying to get money through registering domain names of players in different countries. There players in certain countries where organised crime owns a chunk of them. There were players set up as corporations and there was a club paying a couple of players in tax exempt oil paintings and cars at one time. A lot has been done to tidy this up. Agents now need to be registered, but we still see unregistered "super agents" getting involved with players, owners, clubs etc..}

Agree0 Disagree0

RNred, I don't know exactly what happened with Herrera, but I'd presume it might have been something similar to the Javi Martinez case when he went to Bayern where essentially he ended up buying himself out of his contract via Bayern via the Spanish FA? Horribly complex way to do things and I can see why trying to complete such a move on deadline day would be subject to failure.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think like most things in life when huge sums of money are slushing about there are a queue of unscrupulous, conniving people waiting to get there cut. From what you describe editor football is no different.

Winning is a good habit to have. we've had a good transfer window which is my main point really. The bench looked weak against utd but with the late additions it will look better. I know its a squad game but wondering with br saying he'd prefer coutinhio having a central role but Hendersons energy and all round game having improved who you all would play with gerrard and lucas? can't think what our defence will line up but am I right in thinking that suarez/sturridge/moses as front 3. Ed 001 what's your thoughts on Aspas so far? 3 games in isn't really fair to judge but looking at his first touch against Man u really made me worry. to me he seems no different than Borini? {Ed001's Note - I don't see any similarities in their game personally, other than they play a similar position. Borini is a poacher, who looks constantly for runs into the penalty box in the hope of getting on the end of something. Aspas is constantly looking to get involved in the play and link up with Sturridge, repeatedly dropping deep to receive the ball. Both work hard and are constantly moving, but their game is not the same at all. Personally I like what I have seen of Aspas, his movement is excellent, his touch is mostly good, he is finding space and dragging defenders around, creating space for Sturridge to find. The main issue he has is he is lightweight and is getting knocked around a lot. The little shoves, pulls and kicks that are regularly handed out in the Prem are knocking him off balance. He does need to learn to handle that better, same with Sterling, who also shows that same devilment and willingness to fight for things, but also often loses out due to a complete lack of any kind of bodyweight to throw around. If he can settle in and get used to the physicality of the Prem, then Aspas will be an excellent signing, in my opinion. He does need a goal to help his confidence though.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think the players and Aspas just need to learn how each other players. He has made so many great runs and not been passed to I have lost count.

Very intelligent player and will come into his own soon. Needs to beef up a bit. Will certainly benefit from playing with Suarez and when Coutinho is settled back centrally.

We will be a major goal threat very soon and also very strong defensively. We should all be very happy

Agree0 Disagree0

Good assessment ed, think the physicality of the premier league is sometimes underestimated, can take foreign imports a little time to settle, especially if they are in the mould of Aspas. Think there has been enough positives to be optimistic about how he will perform and integrate into the team this season.

Still not happy Borini has left though, gives a different option and creates so much space for other players with his constant off the ball runs. In some games we will need something different - now that we have loaned him that isn't an option, a pity.

Tough few days for Skrtel. Feel for him. Finally got his chance with Toure's injury and performed well against the champs, kept a clean sheet, and helped silence Van Persie. Then we sign TWO center backs on deadline day and add a trialist from Real Madrid to boot. What's the latest on Toure's injury? Thought he was touch and go for Utd. Is Skrtel expected to continue for the next match? {Ed002's Note - There has been no update from the club on Torre.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Is that Toure or Torres Ed? That kind of ambiguity is surely more than enough to start a Torres to Liverpool rumour? {Ed002's Note - Toure.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Top clubs have top competition. Skrtel was poor last season, if he performs like he did against United week in week out then he will be first choice. Still think he looks a little wild at times - can see free kicks/penalties perhaps being an issue. Would also say that Toure is a lot stronger than him and, judging by the clips I've watched, so is Sakho.

The variety is good though, different defenders for different opponents. When we play Everton for example Sakho might be the best option to nullify Lukaku whereas when we play Arsenal Skrtel's relative quickness might be more effective. Just having options makes me more confident in our team, if Skrtel maintains the form he is capable of he will be a big player for us this season.

p.s. has to be a decent chance of him leaving for Russia in January though surely? {Ed002's Note - Maybe.}

can one of you guys be polite enough to tell me if they think we have managed to cut are wage bill down this summer with all the ins & outs please. don't like to try & understand the money part of the game but seems to me lfc seem to pay very high wages for seemingly average players. Ovcourse with some exceptions. Oh & our are agent fees still through the roof too?
Cheers guys. {Ed002's Note - Wages are a subject we would rather not discuss. Sorry.}

There is a ridiculous number of CB's at Liverpool. I'd assume Ilori and Wisdom will go out on loan. Would that be right? In January I'd say with Skrtel and Coates likely leaving Liverpool will have money to spend.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No one is leaving, with the current three clean sheets confidence is high.

With the extreme competition in places every players concentration will be super high as well

This will give us a lot of clean sheets

Also Rodgers could play a 3 5 2 formation in some matches with 3 cbs and 2 wing backs should be interesting

Agree0 Disagree0

Our defence this season: Toure, Sakho and Agger will rotate at CB, with Ilori as fourth choice. Wisdom out on season loan (likely sorted next week). Skrtel only here as a move couldn't be sorted - will be sold in Jan. Coates injured all year - sold next summer. Kelly is cover for Johnson (with Flanno hopefully loaned out next week). Cissokho and Enrique battling it ot for LB. Robbo out on loan. McLaughlin will stay in U21s this season along with Rafa Paez, Jones, Sama etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ilori, Sakho and Toure can play in more than one position. That flexibility could be a BIG advantage to the squad when injuries and suspensions occur.

All of a sudden we seem to have a balanced squad. No, I'm not having another moan (You know me, I never moan!) but carefully looking at the squad I'm surprised to see BR has pulled quite a coup! There is now quality cover for every position. BR has done this by going under the radar if you see what I mean; quietly putting jigsaw pieces together. Well done, BR!
Borini will be a better player when he comes back and on the subject of Aspas; he is a very very good player, fellow fans. Just watch his run into space, his movements and his touch. He's been unlucky not to score yet and will score plenty. I am extremely happy we have a player of his caliber and I'm sure he will prove to be a great success. Also, good to hear a fellow fan (sorry forgot the name) saying we must look after Coates, ABSOLUTLEY MATE! We are Liverpool, different from other clubs, better than other clubs. I still think Coates, given time, will come good, perhaps very good. We will see.
Just feeling good my fellow fans! May it last a long long time, hopefully till May next year. YNWA

Hi Eds, do you know if there was a player targeted for the defensive holding role position that Lucas plays? I only ask because if Lucas gets injured I don't see a natural understudy in the squad and that seems a bit odd considering we now have six Centre Backs (Agger, Toure, Skrtel, Llori, Sakho, Coates as well as Kelly). Thanks. {Ed002's Note - 8 centre backs with Kelly and Wisdom.}

Hi Eds, now that the window is closed, in what order do you rate the squads of the top 6? Just interested to see what other people from closer to the league think, out in AUS we are quite LFC biased haha, thanks {Ed001's Note - I would go with City, Chelsea, then they are all pretty much of a muchness squadwise. Even City and Chelsea have glaring weaknesses. Chelsea need a striker still, City need a left back and cover all over the back line. To be honest, the more I look at it, the less real difference I can see between the squads. Arsenal lack any kind of depth at all, but Ozil is just top class. We lack cover in midfield. Spurs need a left back even more than City. United still have a lack of any creativity in midfield, other than Kagawa.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Chelsea's squad is definitely the strongest, doesn't really have an obvious weakness and although they could do with another striker I think Eto'o will bang them in. Very strange decision to loan Lukaku though.

Man City's squad is good but they don't look especially good at the moment. Kompany's injury is a big problem for them as without him there remaining centre backs are not consistent or good enough. Nastasic is a talent but without Kompany looks vulnerable. Lescott even worse.

United's squad is better than people have said. Weird how Moyes doesn't wanna play Kagawa and even weirder that they signed Fellaini who, though strong and capable of scoring goals, is hardly a creative mastermind.

Arsenal will do great if they get no injuries or suspensions. If they do they are in serious trouble. Midfield also looks steel (personally don't think Flamini is anywhere near good enough to be a starter in a top 6 team). Ozil is a great addition but against physical, tough midfields they will struggle. Mertesacker is also the slowest defender I have ever seen - speedy forwards will have a field day.

Spurs have made tons of signings but how well they gel is the key. Relied on Bale to pull off miracles last season and without him difficult to see another player capable of producing similar miracles. Soldado looks good but doubt he will skin 3 players and score from 30 yards with a minute to go. Spurs seem better than what they are, Bale's loss will be huge.

Liverpool's squad has been strengthened well in the transfer window however the loss of Borini makes us a little light up front. Suarez will be back but anyones guess as to how committed/well he will play. Might be a masterstroke him staying but equally could disrupt the squad and be a disaster when he returns. Midfield looks vulnerable when injuries and suspensions occur (and Lucas will definitely be suspended at points this season). Joe Allen as our only recognised midfield re-enforcement is worrying - still doesn't convince when he plays. Positive is Henderson has got better and better, could be a pivotal player for us this season, with the hard work he has put in he deserves every success.

I reckon final league standings to be as follows:

Chelsea
City
United
Liverpool
Arsenal
Spurs

Arsenal don't have the squad to maintain league form whilst in CL.

Spurs lack a miracle worker and perhaps cohesion within the first team despite its talent.

Our squad has improved and, unless serious injury hits key positions (MIDFIELD) I think we have the quality for 4th spot.

United not as horrendous as people think and will still have the knack and know how to grind out results, a better team than early results suggest + they have a cushy run in.

City's squad too strong to not finish in the top 4, quality all over the place and when Kompany returns will looks much more solid.

Chelsea have the best squad and a manager who knows who to sit back and bore his way to wins. Mourinho's tactics are ugly at times but the squad at his disposal is absurd. Lack of a forward irrelevant when you have the sort of attacking midfielders they have. Mata not playing is strange though, there best player last season, Mourinho's lack of faith in him could haunt Chelsea.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has decided to play Luis Suarez, 26, on the wing when he returns from his 10-match suspension.
According to the Guardian
WTF?!, if your not going to play him in his strongest position, you may as well have sold him! {Ed001's Note - he always played as a wide forward for Ajax, it suited him fine there, so who is to say he won't play well there for us? I would say it would make no sense to move Sturridge out of his position, so Suarez has to go somewhere else.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd say Sturridge is the better striker and Coutinho is the better no.10. Luis may be a better all rounder but shouldn't oust either of them from their position - He is still lethal playing wider and switching with the front 3 anyhow.

Agree0 Disagree0

I would play him behind Sturridge and continue to play Coutinho on the left for now.

Agree0 Disagree0

It's supposed to be an interchangeable 1-2-1. It will be. Imagine the top 3 on the move and Coutinho pulling the strings. LS will score plenty from the wider birth but Sturridge is more of a poacher type and with proper supply will notch 25 goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah because having Sturridge leading the line with his pace and power, with a combination of Suarez/Couter(as I call him)/Moses/Aspas drifting behind him, dragging defenders all over the place will be really easy for defenses to mark.

Agree0 Disagree0

Suarez should have been played as a wide forward ever since he joined the club. That move has a come 30 months late. He plays there for Uruguay and did for Ajax with resounding success. We will also see more of his creative side than stupid shots from awkward angles. Sturridge will bang in the goals for fun with Suarez and Coutinho around him. Hopefully that will also make it crystal clear to him that the team is not over reliant on him, after his comments saying the other players are not good enough.

Agree0 Disagree0

Suarez will be magnificent floating on the wing. He will see a lot more of the ball and will be able to pull markers of Sturridge. It will free up a lot more space and Coutinho can be pinging those through balls into the gaps.

Agree0 Disagree0

Can't wait to see a threesome of Suarez, Sturridge & Coutinho in top form. All interchanging and wreaking havoc.
It will be like watching defenders trying to handcuff a snake.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Sep 2013 08:28:20
Suarez doesn't really play wide for Uruguay, he did for Ajax but he did move to striker in the last couple seasons there. I think keep sturridge up front and if for some reason Suarez is scoring more from a central position only then he should be put there but, I think wide with a more roaming/ interchanging type for both would benefit them. We needed a player like Suarez against man u in the second half when we were abit all over the shop, he would've taken the ball and caused a little more trouble than sturridge did around that area between the box and halfway.

Agree0 Disagree0

Midsred - I'm not sure Suarez, Coutinho and Sturridge would fullfill your fanatasy of having a threesome but I can't wait to see them playing together :)

Agree0 Disagree0

Sturridge will be the furthest forward and the focal point, but I think the 3 that play behind him will all interchange; Suarez, Coutinho and the third player.

For the first time in months. we have more than 8 fans being positive about suarez.
Waaaoooo. how time and people both changes.

Harry scousser

Agree0 Disagree0

The team is more important than the individual - Sturridge is on fire and shot/goal ratio much better than Suarez's. Suarez has the pace, power and trickery to be really effective on the wing - playing him there is the best way to balance the squad and keep the forward line firing.

Hi Eds and Reds I Was Just Wondering Ed I've seen like people say third party ownership of a player what does it mean exactly and how does it come about thanks in advance {Ed001's Note - it just means that the club is not the only person owning a share of the player. Some South Americans, in particular, will have agents and other companies investing in them as youngsters, in return they get a slice of their ownership. It allows clubs to share the costs and risks of developing young players. In Italy, a lot of the time it is just used similar to getting a first option, by buying a part share, you can just buy the other half later when the player is ready, if he lives up to his promise.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Ed001 am I right in thinking 3rd party is not allowed in the UK? {Ed001's Note - you are right, though an English league club can part own a player who doesn't play in the English league. They just couldn't play in our league.}

Does anyone else want to see a backline of agger, toure and sakho with enrique and johnson as wing backs?

Would free up a lot of defensive responsibility for them allowing them the freedom to attack and we would still have a terrifying back line.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I've been pondering this since we signed Sakho at first I thought too many defenders but now I'm thinking a back three of Toure, Agger, Sakho, glen an Jose wing backs then I'd have Lucas, Gerrard then Coutinho behind sturridge and aspas, Suarez will get his place back later on.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed, Square. I'd even consider Cissokho for Enrique (or even Moses if we're feeling adventuresome) as well as maybe even Henderson/Ilori for Johnson (although I prefer Henderson more central obviously). I think the key is we now have an additional defensive option we didn't really have before.

I also seem to recall reading something about BR mentioning 3-5-2 as being a formation he was fond of at one point as well, may have to try and find that again.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not sure I've ever seen a PL team play that system with much success though (happy to be proved wrong). Sounds great on paper, not sure about the reality.

Agree0 Disagree0

Enrique is a fullback not a wing back. If you want to play with wingback Cissoko is your man

Agree0 Disagree0

Teams with decent wingers will destroy that sort of formation. Could work but only against the right sort of team.

EDs, no rest for you, muhaha! :D

I would really like to know your (from 001 or 002, both would be ideal :D) opinion on this:
-Was second half against united our tactic (I mean did we let them have possesion or they just pushed and our midfielders could not handle it)?
-What about Stoke and Villa?
- Do you see us having more possesion now we got Sakho and will be able to push up?

I just don't know how to ask something I would like to know ffs. let's say it this way: Last year we really dominated most of the games with possesion but this year we dominated first half but in second half our possesion % really fall down. Is this due to tactic, fitness, or? {Ed001's Note - it seems to be a mix of tactics and mentality. A bit of tactics, dropping deeper to guard against being caught in behind, due to a slight lack of pace. Mentality, as they raised their game and pushed higher up, forcing us to concede ground and then we just kept dropping deeper and hoped to hit on the counter using Sturridge's pace in behind. The signings of Sakho and Ilori are both to provide more pace to allow us to be braver and push higher in possession and when we lose the ball press higher.}

if anyone is still moaning about whatever they need to sit down and take a good look at our whole team and were we are in the prem and with the new defenders in then suarez to come back and moses in the squad we can be happy, its what we have wanted for years not a good starting 11 but a very good bench BR hasgot himself a great squad, and for people to go about suarez and his bad behaviour then i'm shore he can cut that out, but then he can score 30 goals a season, so if he is on the bench or playing then we will have a great squad and we should aim for 1st place in the prem not 4th, if we aim for 1st and just fail it then C/L will be there for us, its only 3 games some might say, but the form we are in will keep us there, the Manchester United game proved we can mix it with the big teams and this year wee will be back where we belong plus in the Manchester United game the fans raised the roof,
