I agree with you JG mate about showing some intent early in the summer to exsisting players. But it could work against us when trying to sign players thereafter. Because other clubs will know that we have money to spend and then the price of their players, will probably be inflated.

But IF we spent 20-25 mill early for Adam Johnson (instead of Young) then i'd be more than happy.

Blair Mayne YNWA

ah my aul pal blair, yeh its a catch 22 situation i do agee but im pretty sure all clubs are aware of what kind of funds we have available, if it were me i'd go all out to get my targets regardless but that's me some might dis agree but with these new financial rules being implemented it might be our last chance to indulge and spoil ourselves for once. Ed youngs stats has bin a consistant goal assister for the past 5 years and scores a couple too . adeybarn door please mate they have no one if u asked there fans would they swap him for all there strikers i bet 90 % would say yes,
there top goalscorer , he was there and third in prem behind ronaldo and torres mmmmmmmm
and as for tarrabt we will c still a baby still learning
didnt compare him to barnes just said we aint had no one with skill and pace since barnes oh and maby ste mcmanaman unless u can name me? ?? ?? (dont say gerrard)? ? ? {Ed001's Note - we have had a couple but none were given a chance, now we have Sterling who I would rather give a chance to than bring in a ball hog with a terrible lazy attitude like Taarabt.}

Question for the ed's or anyone in the know, do you think we might move early in the summer market to show some intent to existing players and also to unconvinced targets that we mean business? JG {Ed001's Note - I would expect an early move myself, it would make sense to do so.}

yeh it would make sense and hopefully sense prevails, really looking forward to next season cheers ed. JG

I watch Spanish Football all the time in particular Real Madrid (because of Xabi) and Barcelona (because of the football they play). When i've watched Real Madrid games both in the league and in the CL, Xabi has been Real's best player so far. Yes Ronaldo, Higuain, Benzema etc get all the plaudits but Xabi has been their best player imo.

Xabi is that important to Real that Mourinho rests him more than anyone before CL games (just like he did on Saturday). Mourinho does not rest Ronaldo, Higuain, Benzema etc ahead of CL games mostly Xabi.

For me Xabi is the best passing CM on the planet, even better than Xavi. Like i said i watch a lot of Barcelona games too and am in no doubt that Xabi is better than Xavi.

In a good mood tonight. Great to see an old-fashioned minnow-thrashing in the CL by our good friends at Real. Now the Spuds will be brought back down to earth - at least until tomorrow when the likes of the Daily Mail, The S*n, etc., will hail them as "brave heroes" who fought valiantly until the 3rd minute and they will be portrayed as some sort of super-team that attacked constantly in the good ol' way o' 'Arry (add more apostrophes where applicable), in spite of the fact that they barely tread in RM's half the entire game and they only had one chance over 90 minutes.

Anyway, irrelevant teams aside, I'm looking forward to the City game on Monday. I've a feeling we'll win given our inexplicable ability to go out and thrash Man U, yet get flattened by a mid-table Portugese side (or the like) in the following week; albeit with a weakened side.

Main cause for concern has to be at the back. I would personally love to see Ayala called back as he'd brush Skrtel and Carra aside and walk right into the team and give us a composed, ball-playing outlet in defence in place of Agger (who we should not sell under any circumstances - he's one of the best defenders in the league when he's fit).
I'd also fancy giving Jon Flanagan a go at right-back. He's our only right-back option aside from Carra (please God, no) and he deserves a chance. Just as giving Kelly his first start was a gamble, we should treat Flanagan the same.
He's a great tackler, he's got a great cross, he doesn't hoof it and he'd give his all on the day.

I seriously doubt either of those things will happen, though.

Martin

Ed if a 20m offer came in for reina would you take it?
there are many options out there imo, stekelenberg, Lloris, mandanda, asenjo etc, but other than barca, who are not gonna pay big money for a keeper, but where else can he go, most top clubs across europe have a top keeper already. is arsenal a step up or a step sideways? they havent won any thing for as long as us. i think his heart may not be in it like before, with many of the spanish players over the last few years moving on, but i can't see another club who would be willing to pay the asking price. can you?

matt 27 {Ed001's Note - I would only accept a bid for Reina if he wanted to leave, otherwise I don't see the need for the money.}

Guys look at the spurs banter page they are getting some proper stick they have been going on about winning the league and all the players they are buying Liverpool 5th spurs 6th

05 Apr 2011 22:29:04
Alonso was awesome tonight, was always awesome in a red shirt, acts with class an dignity wen talkin about our great club but to all our deluded fans im sorry to say he won't be coming back, we need to look for the NEW Xabi Alonso

ed any ideas who this could be ? {Ed001's Note - I have not seen anyone in his class, he is simply fantastic.}

Just watched the tottenham match feel fantastic tht they have finaly been taught a lesson in the champions league but neway was watching marcello for the match how would ppl feel about a cheeky bid for him i thought he had a good deivery on him and decent pace, any thoughts?
lfc4lifeynwa

he can't defend, if we brought him in as a left winger then yes but not as a solution to our left back problem

Get bloody serious lads, probably the most consistent attacking left back in europe this season and you think he will consider moving to us! its fantasists like you that make proper liverpool fans cringe! NESV are not gonna wave a magic wand and spend 100 mill. iys a rebuilding project and im gonna put this out there. . . don't know if kenny is the man to rebuild our club. perfect to put some passion and guts into a mal-nourished squad but further than that im not so sure. ed?
JayMc {Ed001's Note - I think he is the right man for now. I certainly think he deserves the chance to try and rebuild us.}

Have to agree with kev from the south. Whoever those commentators were they were making absolute fools of themselves. 3-0 down and they were raving about how good spurs were? Hello? Wake up! But what made me lmfao was when ronaldo scored the 4th and one of those idiots said that spurs didn't deserve that ha . Real were stunning and spurs were. . Well, spurs.
Red bl00ded!

totally agree, i hate the way they have ppl feel sorry about sum1 needs to just come out and say tht they dnt have the quality to be in the champions league and tht tonight they were awful, but i reckon even if spurs had played they're best football they still would have been hammered by tht sublime madrid team,

Xabi has practically issued a come & get me; he loves the club, the city & he's Basque (meaning they hate madrid). if we're supposedly looking at Adam, why not get him back? even at 29 Xabi still has lots to offer + experience. Xabi over charlie, anytime, ten times over! Any thoughts

Yes i have an after thought after pressing bel 10-1 unbel it might be to much expectation from us i mean
if he couldent recapture that brilliance he showed for us
it would ruin our esteem for him and crush him, i know he's doing great for real but things are slower there
and he's 29 now, houlliers biggest mistake putting him up because he wanted barry s**te! we need to start again not go over old ground, time to move on.

tbh i havent watched every madrid match so i cnt rele put a note on his defensive ability, but from wen iv seen him i havent rele seen him put a foot wrong although it would be quite hard for ne player to look bad in a team playing like tht, i wouldn't complain if he came in for a left winger for cheapish especially with our relations with madrid over the years

05 Apr 2011 22:25:44
Ed if we went for kaka do you think we could get him? He's hardly ever in the Madrid team?

Square tomato {Ed003's Note -Highly unlikely}

he's a shadow of his former self, injury prone an too old, he was once unbelivebly good but now i wudnt hav him in over lucas

Most will disagree but I think Skrtel is underated and is our best CD currently. Kelly must move back to CD where he is better suited. Johnson to RB and buy a LB asap.

Well said mate - I agree with this part (and most of the rest) of your post. I rate Skrtel and think he has been good this season - he is not hte prettiest to watch, and has been lucky to escape penalties at times, but he has been far better than the other centre backs in the team.

I think we could bring back Ayala and rotate him, Skrtel and Kelly as our first choice centre backs with Wilson and Carra as back up.

LIVERPRES

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Totally disagree over Skrtel. He struggles physically against big centre forwards, lacks pace and positional sense is weak. He has been found wanting on a number of occasions this year, and in previous seasons.

AGGER is our best defender if we can get him fit. Pure Class.

Bringing in a defensive partner is key. Someone strong, commanding and a threat from set pieces. Big Andy in defence? Or maybe Cahill? Kjaer is linked. Big Sami back?

I agree with all the Xabi comments. Sheer class.

But what about the commentary? Didn't Spurs do wonderfully well to reach this far and only lose 4-0? Were they not wonderful defenders? They would DEFINATELY have scored if Crouch hadn't gone off. 'Arry has done a fantastic job.

If it had been us we would have been pilloried, castigated and we would have been criticised as a disaster.

Don't they just love Spurs?

The Fans should bombard the club with demands to bring back Xabi, at Anfield, on Message Boards, everywhere, we should demand it, no matter who is in charge the Fans ultimately have the power, as they provide the funds by going to games etc.

BRING BACK XABI! !

Martin Skrtel.

When he joined he quickly impressed me as a no nonsense, strong, solid defender, mobile, experienced and looked comfortable on the ball.

The derby against Everton (the one where Torres scored both second half goals) he was the stand out player. He bullied Fellaini at every set piece.

Move onto the first game of last season verses Spurs. He clashes heads with Carra and from that point onwards you can pinpoint his decline.

This maybe a coincidence as he may also have suffered from the familar second season syndrome, whereby players have great first years and tail off badly in the second year unable to reproduce the high standards.

However as i watched him last season, the team struggled as did he, badly. Gone was the assured, strong CB, replaced by a hesitant, meek and at times frigid defender. Poor marking at set pieces, getting beat consistently in the air and the amount of unforced errors on the ball was shockingly high. He started getting into poor positions and caught either too deep, too high up, too tight to the striker or not tight enough.

This season has been much of the same. However in his defence (no pun) he has improved when playing with one Daniel Agger. When Agger finally had a run of 4 games and 25 mins in the first team, Skrtel actually looked a little like his old self. However as soon as he was paired with Kyriagos, you can comfortably say Skrtel has been awful.

He isn't a leader of the pack. He needs to be led. He needs telling what to do and how to do it and with the right guy beside him, he'll do it. A little like the puppet on a string. Kyriagos is no puppetmaster. Carra and Agger are. Unfortunately for Skrtel, Carra is having his own issues with form and Agger was born injured.

So would i keep him? If Kyriagos stays then he'll do Skrtel no favours at all. He can't play with the kids as he isn't the type or the right player to show them how its done. If Carra can regain some element of form, he'll get the best out of Skrtel, but Carra is going to struggle to get in the team as well.

We need a real leader at the back. Someone mentally strong and isn't afraid to open his mouth and tell his mates how to do their jobs. IF we can get this player or even two, then Skrtel will be fine.

Agger, Kyriagos out, Ayala 50/ 50, Skrtel, Carra in.

Bob the Red

After watching the Madrid match i think if we had 3 players we could do very well! Marcelo, Alonso (loved the attempt to chip the keeper !) and Ozil! Your thoughts Ed ? {Ed005's Note - All three would be great signings, although Marcelo is more suited to left-wing than left-back.}

I just love watching spurs getting hammered. And i love watching OUR former #14 in action. No offence, but he makes mereiles, lucas, spearing and poulsen look very, very ordinary, which 2 of them are anyway. I just love xabi. The way he passes the ball over unbelievable distances with such accuracy and ease is amazing. Not to mention anything 40 yards and less is a tap in to him l0l. A 30+ year old xabi is still a class player and id have him over lucas, raul, etc anyday.

Clichy, Mexes, Marveaux, M'Vila, Sissoko, Payet, Benzema. . add this too N'Gog. . (sigh) the next Arsenal anyone? I'd love all of these players tbh, but there has to be british options as good as most of these? The team would look like this :/

Johnson- - - - Mexes- - - - - -Agger- - - -Clichy

Manager: Didier Deschamps anyone? This team would finish top 4 easily, but at what cost? Liverpool's team has always prided itself on its best players being local homegrown talent. What is happening to the club?

Do I have that correct ed?

Load of crap. i spoke to pepe myself a few months back in work. he is always on my flights going home.
he won't be going anywhere this summer or next at least. he signed a long term contract to avoid this kind of talk. he loves liverpool as a city and as a club. he would never leave us for a rival english club. he isn't bothered about no spanish players at liverpool cos he speaks english.
pepe is a legend can we please leave him alone, i am sure being asked everyday in the media if he is staying or going must piss him off. i only asked him cos i see him all the time and always say hi.
mikey

No he's bothered about not winning trophies though and he hasn't exactly ended all speculation by saying "I will never leave liverpool " I believe my sorces 100% if he stays it would only be if we have a huge transfer window and show real signs of challenging for trophies. .Would you like to be known as one of the best goalies in the world that never won a sausage. .
If he stays and pledges his future to LFC i will eat humble pie but i also would like to hear from u mikey if he goes.

Dave. .

= = = = = = = = = = = = =
i asked the man himself and that's what he said.
a modern player would never pledge his whole playing career to one club so i am not bothered by the fact he has said he will never leave liverpool. a 6 year contract will do for me. he wants to stay at liverpool because he loves liverpool.
enjoy your humble pie and make sure you put your source on top lol

tarrabt young special talent if we don't get him another big team will . weve bin missing someone who can beat players with skill pace and score since john barnes? ?? ?? ? what you think ed {Ed001's Note - I think you put too much score by stats, Adebayor was nicknamed AdeBarnDoor by Arsenal fans because far too often he couldn't hit one. Taarabt has a terrible attitude and never passes, to compare him to Barnes is a complete insult. As for Young, he has shown a lot of improvement this year, but is still too weak and prone to hide for my liking.}

You don't know what you've got till its gone, Xabi Alonso is an absolute class act, the way he sprays the ball around so calm and accurate is a joy to watch. His timing and vision is incredible, his tackling coolness personified.

No doubt we would have massively benefited from his midfield presence / ability in so many of those bad games this season (blackpool, newcastle, west ham, west brom). Can anyone pls tell me if there is another player of his quality / style out there that we could look to bring in with a low injury record?

I think the Ed's forgot to read that i posted it into the Banter section. I was just stating all the French players we'd been linked with and saying how stupid it would be. I thought that was pretty obvious tbh.

I understand the whole mixture of banter and rumours but come on lads these Benzema rumours are now becoming wishfull thinking, 23-35 million pound on another striker NO CHANCE. Liverpools priorities are 2-3 wingers, leftback, rightback, 2 C/ Backs, and a midfield playmaker. Another striker will be purchased but somewhere in the 6-13 million pound bracket.

Liverpool are in negotaiations with Blackpool and have offered £6.25mil for Charlie Adam with the option of Jay Spearing on loan for the season (if they stay up). Spurs are in the mix as well, but there interest is not as strong as before, they may pursue other higher profile targets based outside the prem. Man United do not want Adam, but Blackpool are using the reported interest from the mancs to drive the price up high as possible.

Fair enough Ed, feel like I've seen some before. No big deal, off to other things. There's a lad I've seen before I reckon we could take a punt on without overspending and could maybe do a job in Raheem Sterling. Plays for some forgotten team, bangs in goals. Some of his teammates also look rather promising. Maybe Comolli should be looking at this team, could have some definite bargains on our hands! Can't for the life of me place the name of the team though.

Anybody who puts Carra in their squad for next season, needs to look at this season and last seasons performance from him. He shouldnt be given a place in a team looking to get back in to Europe.A magnificent servant to the club, but be serious. He is a back to the wall Alamo style defender these days. His pace and use of the ball is not good enough in an attack minded team. He should be moved on or put with the reserves to give them his experience.

Because it would destroy the wage structure. The bigger players like Gerrard would want massive wages too so it would cost a fortune

Posting from my mobile, apologies for not signing the keep the faith post. On another note, any post I see with "We will play this formation with these players next season" is by someone obviously not in the know, because not even Kenny (or next manager, gulp) will be here, and obviously we will adapt to the team we are playing against with different personnel and formations. Keep the faith Redmen, and maybe the players you once slated can turn into Kop heroes.

Happy times ahead!

Last one for the day, but I reckon any of these tricky wingers from La Liga mid-table teams could probably do a job. Hernandez, Mata, Perotti, Pablo Piatti (might be Italy, at work and can't quite remember) Saw a post earlier about looking for defensive mids from midtable Spanish and Italian teams and that's a good shot. I know there's zero chance but I would love to see Miguel Veloso patrolling our midfield and providing backline cover. I believe he just moved to Genoa last year though.

I agree, Agger needs to go. We need fit players who can start regularly especially at the center back. Agger gets injured every single week. At least Skrtel plays week in week out, even scored two goals this season.

To whoever wrote this, I would have to disagree with you. Daniel Agger is our best defender, and brings something extra in attack as he is comfortable on the ball, almost playing like a DM. We just need to get another decent defender so we can rest him.

To whoever wrote the second post, I'd agree with the first poster, Agger is a great player and when fit one of our best defenders but simply does n't play enough as he's to injury prone, get him fit and accept any decent offer, if I remember Milan where interested in him not too long ago, he'd be perfect for the less phyisical italian league.Its seems to me like all he does is rest. .on the physio's table.Sorry mate.

What do you expect - one man against eleven isn' t fair

Even if there was 11 NGog, against 1 player, Ngog would still lose. He runs around like a headless chicken. Time for him to fly the coop. Lets just hope someone is silly enough to buy him this summer. Ross

Man city have been offering Adam Johnson, Emmanuel Adebayor, Shay Given, Craig Bellamy, plus many others around clubs. They are trying to trim the squad down as they have to many players in some positions. They hope to get even more world class players in the summer as well. I hope Liverpool go for Johnson and given! The pair would cost about £15mil.
Red Trev2011

adam johnson would cost over 20m
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Man City will not be selling Johnson, Mancini likes the player and he has scored quite a few goals this season for them. He is also one of there best english player so they need this to fill there quota. Ross

XABI ALONSO

Class act it was an honour to watch him play for us.

He is still in Champions League but still has it in his heart to want to bring his son up as a true RED.

Would be a dream to have him back not going to happen but the man is a true legend.

Good luck tonight Xabi and really hope you get to pick up the Champions League again this season.

yeah Xabi is a class act all round, great player an seems like a stand up chap

Would people want Aquilani back? He has come out and said he would be open to a return in the Italian press if Juve do not retain him. Personally I'd like to see him given a second chance as he is not fit and can kick a ball! Eds?
Iggypop {Ed002's Note - Aquilani has repeatedly stated his desire to stay in Italy. His agents were instructed by Liverpool in January to look at alternate solutions as well.}"
Ed002: see for your self if you Google or check out Gazzeta del Sport. It was also reported in the Indepedent on 30th march. Maybe he has changed his mind? People do. So would we like him back? Personally I think he could do a job for us and if it doesn't work out we can sell him later.
Iggypop

{Ed002's Note - He said he would return if he has to - and he would have no choice. If he returns it is because no one wants him and Liverpool end up with a disgruntled player in the dressing room.}

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
How anyone would want Aqua back is beyond me, he was brutal in his time at Liverpool and is not up to much either in the Serie A, I'd prefer to have Spearing in the middle than him!

Barry B

{Ed002's Note - He is going out of his way at present to tell everyone who will listen that he wants and hopes to stay at Juve.}
= = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Why are people still going on about Aquilani he will NEVER come back to LFC he wants to stay in Italy, He could never do a job for us because he does not have the physical presence and gets pushed off the ball to easy, we should never have bought him in the first place, it was a joke, and this is why we have been so poor because our signings have been very poor in the past. I would love to see Honda at Anfield however I am not convinced he will come, BUT, the fact that his agent has said he won't be moving means almost nothing. If CSKA's valuation is met Honda would not hesitate to move to England or Spain and trust me his agent will be desperate to get him a move if a big enough club shows an interest and I'm 100% convinced that come the summer we will be interested.

load of crap. i spoke to pepe myself a few months back in work. he is always on my flights going home.
he won't be going anywhere this summer or next at least. he signed a long term contract to avoid this kind of talk. he loves liverpool as a city and as a club. he would never leave us for a rival english club. he isn't bothered about no spanish players at liverpool cos he speaks english.
pepe is a legend can we please leave him alone, i am sure being asked everyday in the media if he is staying or going must piss him off. i only asked him cos i see him all the time and always say hi.

No he's bothered about not winning trophies though and he hasn't exactly ended all speculation by saying "I will never leave liverpool " I believe my sorces 100% if he stays it would only be if we have a huge transfer window and show real signs of challenging for trophies. .Would you like to be known as one of the best goalies in the world that never won a sausage. .

Who else agrees with me that Liverpool are stuck with Joe Cole until his contract runs out, i think it still has 3 years left to run? (i maybe wrong with this imformation). At the minute he is collecting £80,000 - £90,000 a week at Liverpool no matter how bad he plays, if he plays at all! What other club would be mad enough to match those sort of wages? Let alone fork out £, 5, 6, 7, 8 million in the first place to buy him. As i keep reading on this website he is going to be sold for around this fee.

I'm afraid we are stuck with Joe being on the bench in the squad bleeding the club dry. Unless Kenny can weave some magic and get him to start playing the the old Joe Cole.

Basil {Ed002's Note - His wages include a significant element of signing on fee spread over the length of the contract.}

To Eds and Anfield andy,
I disagree with anfield andy I believe aggers days are numbered we can't put up with all these injuries, yes he is a good player but for the length of contract and wages to what we get back on the pitch simply doesn't add up, havent seen him stray forward and shoot for 18 months. Also skrtel is nowhere near good enough total liability, one decent game on sat all season. two centre halves required to add to kelly and ayala for strenghth in depth.

Also when spuds bid for aguero do you think it was for real?
My theory is spuds think there one of the biggest teams in the world now , so they like to talk about getting world-class players to try and convince everyone else there a massive club.
What do you think?

LAVERS

{Ed002's Note - I imagine that Liverpool were Suarez' first choice - I have heard nothing to say they were not. The problem was that Liverpool's negotiating tactics were awful. If anyone else had come in and bid what Liverpool ended up paying the player would have been lost. As for Aguero, Spurs enquired and were given some numbers and walked away immediately.}

Get rid of Agger? Are you crazy?
Easily our best defender when hes fit. Fair enough hes struggled the last 18 months with injury, but once hes fit, and we have a decent back up then we will see the best of Agger.
Hes comfortable on the ball, going forward, aggressive at corners, commanding and has a great sense of decision making.
I fully believe that when theyre fit Skrtel and Agger can give any other defensive partnership a run for their money. Then you have Ayala and Wilson on the bench as cover. Carragher to contest RB/ LB with Kelly/ new LB. This would be a great backline.

To the West Ham fans I know Cole is still an idol and they would all, without even thinking about it, rush out and buy a Cole shirt if he returned next season.}

Liverpool absuletly need a defensive midfield player that can hold possesion of the ball and pass with intelligence.

Who ever they get to fill this role, it will be the most important player Liverpool will buy this summer. A player that can successfully fill this role for Liverpool could be the difference between finnishing in the top 4 next season.

Charlie Adam looks like a good option for this role. However Liverpool should look towards Europe, in particular Spain, where they might find some hidden talents that play for lower teams in la Liga.

05 Apr 2011 12:52:50
Ed, while your point is valid it really only works when you are talking about a very special kind of player, (I don't include the massively overrated Shearer in that statement). Many managers over recent seasons have ignored natural goal scorers to buy more all round strikers only to find that those supposed better footballers fail to give the necessary goal return. In an ideal world yes you would look for a Fowler or a Rush, but if that kind of striker isn't an option then look for a natural finisher like Bent

Chris in Tamworth {Ed001's Note - I understand what you are saying, but Bent is not good enough to fit in a side like Liverpool. He wasn't even good enough for an average Spurs. Settling for mediocre players is what got us in the situation we are in now, it is time to stop doing that.}

. . . . . . .

Agree with ed we have bought carp for too long.
I remember when rafa left it had in the paper all his signings and money spent.
One season he spent 50mil on about 14 players , this is were we keep messing up.
You don't see scum doing this , they go out and spend the transfer budget on 1-2 players then that's it.
I hope the money we get they spend on class players , if it means we get 3-4 players then so be it.

I agree that Bent would not fit in our team at the moment but that's not because he's not good enough it's because the team isn't good enough, what I mean is that to be a great team you need to be strong enough in all the other positions so that your striker need not worry about anything other than scoring. If we were strong across the back and across midfield then a front pair if Suarez (grafter and guile and bags of talent) and Bent (just goals) would be better than Suarez Carroll. Carroll is possibly the right player in our team at the moment because we are too weak in other areas so we need a striker to do much more than score. My concern is that he won't get close to 20 goals in a season

Chris in Tamworth {Ed001's Note - isn't that where Everton went wrong when they signed Lineker to replace Gray? They decided they didn't need to replace Gray's graft as Lineker's goals would make up for it. They went from champions to runners up. The reason why Barca win is because of the work rate allied to their ability. Ability alone will not win regular trophies.}

Of course Ed you are right in fact I think we are very nearly singing off the same sheet. The only point I'm trying to make really is if the team is good enough in other departments then a striker who does very little but score can work better than a grafter who doesn't get the return and I think Bent is a striker who scores and MAYBE my concern is that Carroll won't get the necessary return. I hope I'm wrong (however I rarely am!)

Take it you weren't a fan of Fowler, Owen, shearer, ronaldo etc? But must love kuyt

Personally I think a strikers job is to strike. Leave defending to defender. I'd you need your forwards to support defence your defence must be poor.
rewflo {Ed001's Note - Fowler and Shearer both defended from the front as well, I really don't see your point. Fowler could also provide for others, Shearer could hold the ball up and bring others into play. I think you are missing the point, there is a lot more to being a great player than doing ONE thing well. A good player like Lineker could do one thing well, a great player can do far more.}
- - - - - - - - - - - -
Ed, while your point is valid it really only works when you are talking about a very special kind of player, (I don't include the massively overrated Shearer in that statement).

Chris in Tamworth {Ed001's Note - I understand what you are saying, but Bent is not good enough to fit in a side like Liverpool. He wasn't even good enough for an average Spurs. Settling for mediocre players is what got us in the situation we are in now, it is time to stop doing that.}

Well how many shirts would you say it will take to cover J. Coles wages, theres not a lot of money in this area at pesent.Upton pete {Ed001's Note - I have no idea, just going on what I was told by someone involved with the club, West Ham I mean. He was telling me that they were looking into it very closely as they believe his merchandising sales would cover his wages. I would think it would be in the order of thousands of shirts a week, but also include pennants, scarves, mugs etc featuring his image. Maybe even expecting a gate increase too. I will ask him if he has any further info as I never pressed him, was just glad they were considering getting him off the books at Liverpool.}

West Ham may well sell 10 thousand new shirts if Joe Cole joined next season, but not much more then that, and that amount will not pay his wages.Upton pete {Ed001's Note - if you say so, clearly you have done all the marketing assessments etc to know exactly what you are talking about.}

05 Apr 2011 10:50:38
I agree Joe Cole is not the player he was, but he is contracted to Liverpool on a higher wage then he will be able to demand with his next club, so why leave so it is about his wages, never forget the greed of footballers. {Ed001's Note - if it was about greed he would be at Spurs now, they offered him a higher wage. I personally do not rate Cole in the slightest, he is not the brightest bulb by any means, but you are doing him a disservice. He chose to come to Liverpool because he was promised regular football in his chosen position. It has not worked out for him, but why would he not want a move that would give him that regular first team football in his chosen position now?}

{Ed001's Note - I take it you never saw Rush play then? We never seemed to have a problem with it then. I also guess you have never seen Tevez play, he also defends from the front. It is one of the reasons he is such a good player.}

I agree with both of you in this discussion, but ed surely you don't mean that both of our stirkers should be chasing the ball back all of the time because if we did win the ball back there would be no one to try and pass too up front?

N.I. RED {Ed001's Note - Carroll is the fulcrum up front, the others should be working round him while he pushes right up on the defence.}

I live near Upton park, and you don't see many West Ham shirts not new ones, so I doubt he will sell any more new shirts next season.Upton pete {Ed001's Note - how do you figure that out? Because they have no stars to sell shirts right now they had better not buy one for next season? To the West Ham fans I know Cole is still an idol and they would all, without even thinking about it, rush out and buy a Cole shirt if he returned next season.}

i can see your point and totally agree that strikers should provide
goals as well as score. I just disagree with them defending, if they are defending then when they win the ball they have nowhere to go. Why not make our centre backs ay upfront aswell to support the strikers? Our goalie as well for that matter. Having too many men behind the ball leaves no options up front, congests the centre and slows play down. that's how teams like stoke play {Ed001's Note - I take it you never saw Rush play then? We never seemed to have a problem with it then. I also guess you have never seen Tevez play, he also defends from the front. It is one of the reasons he is such a good player.}

West Ham want the Joe Cole of old, not the Joe Cole of now, so I still think you will have a problem selling him, and I still think Q.P.R. Are your best bet at getting him off your books. {Ed001's Note - I agree, but to suggest it is anything to do with his wages shows a clear lack of understanding. The problem is he is simply not the player he was.}

A lot of you keep saying J.Cole will be sold this summer, but you may well find it difficult to find a buyer, look at the teams you think he might go to, Arsenal, wages to high, Chelsea, no chance, Spurs, only if he takes a £40 grand wage drop, City, don't need him, Man Utd, no interest at all, West Ham or Fulham, again its his wages, so who could sign him, just a long shot, a team that has the sort of money needed to pay his wages, and bring him back to LONDON, Q.P.R. If he is going to be sold, it could be the only move he can make, if not you are stuck with him.Thoughts Ed. {Ed001's Note - Spurs offered him a bigger wage than we did, clearly your point is nonsensical as his wages are lower than many of Arsenal's players, but no one really expects Arsenal to be interested anyway. West Ham would pay his wages too, he would earn it back in shirt sales if he returned and they know it.}

Iggypop

{Ed002's Note - He said he would return if he has to - and he would have no choice. If he returns it is because no one wants him and Liverpool end up with a disgruntled player in the dressing room.}

to me a strikers main job is helping the team by scoring goals the same way defenders help the team by defending and asking a striker to go back and defend would affect their main role. the ones though who should be getting stuck in "always" is the mid fielders. there are different kinds of strikers whos game develops differently suarez is the kind that will track back but that's because they way hes game has developed at ajax as most of the attackers play freely and they switch alot not to mention he likes theball at hes feet. bezema is more of a cf type of player that stays up their and waits for the ball. he does the exact things carroll does but a 100 times better in terms of being able to hold the ball, run with it, pass, move and the only difference is carroll is a cb and he is a striker nah jokes aside its like cricket some bowlers are just good at bowling others are all rounders and are good at bowling and batting, now do u want a striker that is good at going fwd and tracking back or do u want a AMAZING striker that can score "hellalot of goals"

Eds in bed? Im getting up to go to work, there's a fantastic Austin Matt mckay who should come on loan, great talent Gerrard elk, captained bris roar to 28 games this season. Will defense be overseas this season, cheap as and better squad player than poulson and that other one messi. . I mean maxi lol. Tris

Hi mate - this isn't such a bad shout you know! Matt McKay has been a revelation in the Aussie League this year. He is one of the only Aussie-based players to break into the Socceroo squad recently. He has a sweet left foot and can play anywhere on the left - more of an attacking winger/ centre-mid but has played for Australia at left-back in the recent Asian cup. Very fast, skillful and young.

Easily a better squad player than Poulsen or Maxi. Might be the next Harry Kewell (without the injuries).

I would love to see us get him. My only concern is the gulf in quality between the A-League in Australia (comparable to championship at best) and the EPL.

Worth a punt though - as you say - he would be cheap. Probably one million Aussie dollars (400,000 pounds).

Wilson looks terrible everytime he plays LB.

No1SAfan

Man, you are so damn wrong. he may be not good in going forward but defensively he has don a decent job playing @ left back , the only match i was quite down with him was against Westham.

I also think that Wilson should be used as CB , but playing @ LB for sometime will make him versatile & would give him some experience for the future.

I agree, Agger needs to go. We need fit players who can start regularly especially at the center back. Agger gets injured every single week. At least Skrtel plays week in week out, even scored two goals this season.

05 Apr 2011 00:06:47
If we signed Benzema, he'd replace Carroll in the starting line-up within 3 weeks. It'd be a Suarez - Benzema strike force. Carroll would become the most expensive back-up striker in history.
