Okay lads, with Agger heading back home it leaves a vacancy for vice captain. Personally I'd love to see Jordan Henderson as our new vice captain. The way he has developed sets a great example for all the youngsters coming through, and he is already showing leadership qualities as we seen in the Spurs game. My question is, who would you like to see as our new vice captain?

Believable18 Unbelievable3

Henderson.

He has shown passion, hunger and leadership qualities and has become an integral part of the team.

He has come a long way over the past 2 years and I can't think of anyone more deserving.

Red Rum

Agree15 Disagree2

Henderson, top lad.

Agree10 Disagree2

Mignolet or Skrtl. It has to be someone at the back who, if they have to step in to the captain slot mid-game, have been watching most of the game played out n front of them.

Agree1 Disagree12

Henderson definitely. Captain when Gerrard retires and Lovren vice.

Agree4 Disagree2

Red Lenin really? Skrtel or Mignolet?
If it was up to me, neither would be in our first team, let alone be vice captain. Valdes will take Mignolet's place, and Skrtel will likely leave next season plus he does not fit into BR's style of play. Neither has any sort of leadership qualities. Has to be Henderson for me. Lallana and lovren should also be considered but since they have just joined I doubt either will get it.

Henderson . defo . love it how far he has come from a shaky start and looked like a bad buy . too a key memember of our squad and a favourite for future captaincy . just shows how putting faith in youngsters and giving them time is crucial!! Great attitude aswell Hendo

Agree1 Disagree2

Interesting then that BR said skyrtl has been outstanding for us for the last 18 months. hardly the comment of a manager looking to drop him at the first opportunity?

Agree1 Disagree0

He's hardly likely to come out and say he's been gash is he? Especially if he hopes to sell him off for a decent transfer fee at some point.

Agree0 Disagree0

Henderson. He is a true professional and really, we have no reason ever to feel let down by him.

Just like to say I'm gutted for you and Daniel Sturridge for that he's got injured on England duty.
I don't buy into all this celebrating other teams injuries like it's a good thing, personally I think if it comes down to that its time we all gave football up as a bad job.
I hope Daniels back sooner than expected and back amongst the goals as per usual ASAP, obviously I hope he's fit and well to play against us but has a stinker on both days, well there has to be a limit :-)

Believable24 Unbelievable0

Another top post mate hats off to you.

Agree11 Disagree1

Good man, hope Oli comes back ready strong and ready to play. You guys look a whole different team when he's having one of his good days.

Arsenal were very unlucky last year to lose Ramsey and Walcott, it's just something all clubs have to deal with.

Agree4 Disagree0

Thanks gunner62 -much appreciated and always good to hear from someone who loves the game and not the politics. We all like to see the best line ups against each other - that is what the game us about.

Good luck to Ozil too and if I wasn't a true Red I would be a Gunner like my late father.

Feel sympathy for Olivier Giroud with his injury, it was such a freak thing to happen. Still, I guess it gives him more time to concentrate on being gorgeous hahaha.

hi think BR should put sturridge on a strength building programe so he does not get injured as much, there must be something the coaches can do except treat him, if we could get him to play every game it would give us a great chance at getting into the top 4 and maybe higher, if he gels with mario and they form a great partnership then every time an injury happens the partnership fails

Believable2 Unbelievable5

I'm sure the medical and coaching team already do treat him differently. That's why he's always subbed early to avoid injury.

Agree9 Disagree0

I think you have to remember that everybody has a natural susceptibility to injury, some more than others. Especially those with pace sure to the nature of the muscle fibre development in their early years. Fast twitch fibre (those used for speed sprinting) are more susceptible to injury, so someone with pace who has more of this type than others is more likely to be injured by nature.

Putting him on strength training will develop slow twitch muscle fibres but will come at the expense of pace.

Agree2 Disagree4

Nevada explain to me how a strength programme will only work type 1 muscle fibres?

Agree1 Disagree2

06 Sep 2014 16:46:32
And remember how often he gets injured with England vs how often he's injured with us.

Agree2 Disagree1

If only all our players were built like Suarez. Was astounded at how often he was belted and just bounced back. I'm struggling to remember games he missed due to injury. Maybe when he felt an injury coming on, he just took a chunk out of someone? If he's going to be on the sideline he may as well get it out of his system at the same time!

Agree0 Disagree0

Strength training will develop slow twitch muscle fibres (not exclusively but mainly) and the additional weight that comes as a result of strength training means the muscles have to develop in a different way to support the extra weight. This is the primary reason why light weight but speedy players get slower when they put on weight. I'm sure someone will point out that sprinters are very muscular but they are trained to run for only 100-400m not to continuosly run for 10-13km like footballers.

It's physiology, if you are fast you cannot keep up that speed for long without injury, if you are a stamina based player you will sacrifice speed for that stamina.

Not surprised Sturridge injured. Hate pointless international friendly games. I mean was Hodgeson not aware of what Danny can do? Did he need to play 90 minutes? Does he need to go through the archaic training methods? Fingers crossed Sterling and Henderson pick up a 24hr bug and miss the next pointless England game. Does anyone really expect England to ever win anything anyway?
Hope the FA pays the full wages whilst out injured, but the won't.

Thank God we signed Mario and Borini stayed. Think they'll make a good partnership. With Lambert and another option, Markovic and maybe Yesil. This proves how well the club did over the summer strengthening the squad. Huge loss but we have quality options to cover the next 4 months while Sturridge gets back.

Hope Rodgers starts doing a Fergie and pulls players out of England games, at least until they get a manager with modern methods. Even then agree only 45 minutes max in a pointless friendly game.

Believable21 Unbelievable3

He was injured during training, not playing.

Agree2 Disagree8

Borini isn't good enough pls.its balotelli and lambert who would get us the goals

So what you think He moved to Liverpool from Cheksea?

Agree3 Disagree4

Fabio is still young please give the lad a chance

If he does get a chance I hope he takes it an proves people like you wrong . I no there's clubs in Italy that would die for a st like him

. But people like you drive me crazy puttin players down Henry didn't become the player he did over night an I'm not sayin fabio is like Henry. . . This is my first post my name is Gareth an I love Liverpool I go to Liverpool 1 time every year an I havin been to a game were we loss an I'm going since I'm 16 an I'm 26 now an I'm from Dublin Ireland. Another thing I would like to add I'm a follower to this site since it was just football rumours an that a good few years now. Keep up the good work eds

Agree8 Disagree1

Roy's getting his own back

Agree1 Disagree2

The worst thing was was that the first two changes in the game were both arsenal players so obviously Wenger has been pulling woys strings so maybe sturridge has been Brendaned because he didn't make woy take him off?

Has anyone read frank lampards comments on youngsters in England I fear for the youth at our club I fear for ibe and suso textira many more

Believable1 Unbelievable4

No, not read what he said about the youngsters in English football. What was he saying?

Agree1 Disagree3

Is this the same Frank Lampard that is going over to the USA where he will be keeping US youngsters out of the team he's going to be playing for? lol

Agree8 Disagree2

Basically they just get loaned out and rearly get the chance to fulfil there potential what we already new but it is true

Agree1 Disagree1

If they all got chances then the EPL would be like La Liga, Bundesliga, Eredivise & Ligue 1. Great national side but lopsided domestic leagues.

I don't fear for Ibe as the only reason he isn't in the team right now is his finishing, if his finishing was better he'd be in the squad instead of us having to buy a great talent like Markovic.

in terms of Suso unless he has a turn around he might end up being sold or leaving on a free. I feel he will get chances but he needs to make the manager feel like letting him leave for nothing or next to nothing isn't an option and earn a solid place in the team(maybe a allen/toure role) along with it a contract. But if he doesn't the no worries as we have Teixeira and Alberto who both are similar to Suso.

I'd also like Liverpool to try and make Yesil excel and give him game time in the cups. like the game against Middlesbrough where we have back to back games followed by champions league. Yesil, Suso, Borini should be the ones to play in that game along with senior guys who might not be in the managers thoughts to start the Everton game that follows 4 days later.

Any idea how long sturridge is out for eds

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - No. Give the club the opportunity to assess the injury.}

Hi Eds,
Out of interest, what's the situation with Samed Yesil? I know he's had his issues with injuries, but it'd be a shame to see his Liverpool career fail before it's even begun. Do you think he has a future or do you think he'll end up being "Brendaned?"
Thanks in advance
YNWA

Believable0 Unbelievable4

{Ed002's Note - He is playing for the U21 side.}

Oweng he has had I think 3 serious injuries in a row, he's not being brendaned. Hopefully he gets the ligaments around his knee/'s stronger and can then have a chance to impress BR. I think he's just got to keep healthy long enough to get the shout from the manager. He will be given time like Teixeira has, unless a offer comes that Liverpool are happy with.

Was just thinking and was wondering have we ever had a youngster in our ranks that we thought wasn't good enough and let go and then they have became a star? Bit like Rickie lambert in a way but I mean better. Really hope we don't lose suso but it's lookin very likely :(

Not exactly the answer to the question
But we were very close to signing a 18 year old Ronaldo before his move to Man u

Agree1 Disagree0

Kevin Sheedy. Enough said. Thank you very much.

Agree1 Disagree0

We had Whelan and Sheedy coming through at the same time, Bob chose Whelan for the Ray Kennady Role, and as you say Davey, enough said. In Bob we trusted.

Agree2 Disagree0

We were also very interested in signing aguero before he moved to atletico. Though I'm unsure if the reason we didn't was because we didn't think he would adapt or work permit issues. Perhaps an ed might know?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It was the year before he moved to Atletico but there was no offer made by Liverpool. There was an offer from Bayern Munich but the player was not keen.}

06 Sep 2014 09:31:30
I know they came back but Fowler and Steve Staunton were let go too early when they should have playing at anfield.

Agree2 Disagree0

We nearly signed danni alves but when the sellling team raised the transfer by 1 mill we pulled out the next season he went to barca for megga bucks,

Agree0 Disagree0

Can't think of any really. Some have had decent careers but none at top 4 level.
The ones who are good enough to stay at Liverpool usually do.
That said we don't always give the youngsters the right environment to grow, so we could have produced a few more stars over the years. Instead we sometimes let them rot in the reserves and the talent dwindles away rather than give them chances in the first team.
A good few examples are sterling (always going to get his chance, so always going to make it)
Flanno (would he really of got another chance if it wasn't for injurys?, now he's developing into a star because he got a chance)
Suso (got a chance, did ok but a bit raw so got a loan, did great on his loan, brought back to rot in the reserves, if he doesn't get a run in the team he's not going to grow. Was one of the shining lights of the academy, who knows how good he will become or how bad he will become not playing football.)

Agree3 Disagree0

Davey, maybe you simply said "enough said" because if you would have expanded in any way like goals scored, medals won there would only be one winner. Dusty.

Agree2 Disagree1

Yes but you're missing the point Alan. The OP was asking which players you had let go over the years which in hindsight you might have wished you'd kept hold of. I suggested Sheeds as Howard Kendall snapped him up from out of your reserves for a snip. He then turned out to be be a match winning winger down the left flank with the sweetest left foot of that era. He won 2 Championships, 1 FA Cup and 1 European Cup Winners Cup plus numerous runners up medals. You can also add several Charity Shield medals (including at least 1 against your shower I seem to remember). He was also a star for his country and is currently back at Goodison - his spiritual home coaching youngsters, as opposed to Anfield where he was never welcomed back in Derbies. So "enough said" and thank you for our gain and your loss.

Italian centre back, Gabriel Paletta.

Agree0 Disagree0

Mikel San Jose is the main one I can think of. Forged a decent career for himself with Bilbao and currently in the Spain squad. Gabriel Paletta had also done well, whilst Antonio Barragan is at Valencia.

Honourable mentions to Tom Ince and Alex Kacaniklic, who are both still young and could have very good careers still.
