There were concerns after the game that fernando torres had gained 12st. . . . It later emerged he still had john terry in his back pocket!

Good team effort, Lucas, Kelly and pepe stand out for me, and obviously our number 9! Kuyt looked sharp and energetic! And we seemed to just click today as if we knew that Chelsea would exploit any tiny mistake!

I'd like to see a similar style of play with weaker teams also, we were constant nuisance and threat and probabily created more than all season!

Were getting there, it's a marathon not a race!

07 Nov 2010 23:52:45

Not thrilled by Hodgson's words again after the match "I'll enjoy ninth" - seems to have the knack of saying the wrong thing at the moment.
I'm hoping in January we can get in 4 or 5 to boost a decent (but not excellent) 11. CB, LB, LM plus a striker (or even two if Carew was available on the cheap) would give squad needed depth - would be happy to lose Babel, Aurelio, Degen, Aquilani & Skrtel to part-fund (maybe £20-25 million between them). Really pleased that Kelly is getting a look in and hope to see more of Shelvey & Spearing too.

07 Nov 2010 23:21:33

I thought the shape of the team was excellent today but how long will Mereiles have to play on the right? Although I thought he did well, he poses no real threat to his direct defender because he is no dribbler and not a real winger. Do you rate mereiles, has he been a good buy? where's his best position?

07 Nov 2010 23:09:20

Today's performance was fantastic but we still need to buy in January. We need a left back, at least one really pacey winger to give us that extra something, first choice of course would be Mata, however I think it would be unlikely. I would also like a back up striker(spend no more than £10m). Some good QUALITY buys in the summer should see us make progress.

I am not a Roy hater, but I have been posting since the end of July that he is not good enough to manage our club.
Today I will/ should say well done Roy for:
1- Good formation and tactics in the first 45 minutes
2- recognising that Kuyt is a forward and can link well with Torres
3-Having the guts to play a young player against Malouda one of the best attacking midfielders in the PL this year, Kelly won that battle easy and again well done Roy for having the faith in him
4- Gerrard position was very effective today, on Thursday SG had to run forward to get us the goals, today he was superb in controlling the midfield and his passes/ tackling were spot on.

A separate well done to Lucas, I want to add my vote he would be my man of the match.

But Back to Roy now, If he proves me wrong and come end of the season , he is still in charge and we are top 7 (I am not expecting better than last year) then I will be very happy to eat the sweetest humble pie . .
But we should put things into perspective , for a start it was n't vintage chelsea, both Malouda and Drogba were not effective, Anelka did next to nothing, yet the second half we were lucky not to conceed and Pepe chest was our saviour.
You never see Arsenal/ Chelsea/ Man u, even Man city or Spurs parked in their half for near enough 45 minutes, just inviting pressure .
Most of the team played well, but to me Meireles was our worst player, yes he nicked the ball and passed to Torres for the second goal, but apart from that he did nothing, where Gerrard, Lucas, Kuty were throwing themselves at every tackles, Raul was hiding away.

To Blair Mayne I do enjoy your banter on the oaps man'ure banter page but today one does think that Roy has won a few more supporters .So a little piece of humble pie might do your street cred some good.Try it.Roy has done good

I would love nothing more than Roy to proove me wrong then i will gladly eat humble pie. IF Roy's doing well then the team is doing well. But untill today it would be fair to say that a majority of us were thinking that Roy's just not good enough.

I won't be swayed by a good 45 mins today like no one should. IF Roy stays then it means one thing he's doing a good job.

It would be nice to see good flowing football at the club and i just can't see that happening with Roy (just ask the players).

RED EYE HECTOR,

the performance vs Bolton was awful- the performance vs Napoli until Joe Col got injured and forced Hodgson to make a change was awful!

The fact is - anyone who as you put it "manages our great club" - says the things he has about our two biggest rivals everton and Manure- deserves the sack!

If you been to busy on your X Box to remem, ill help u. .
He talks of fergie as "sir" and wants his friendship - sugest fergie might move for Torres.

Vs Everton he says a point would be a great result!

People leave meireles alone. hes only joined us but is now starting to fit into our midfield. ps best liverpool performance today lets keep it going.

07 Nov 2010 21:58:28

Please please, please stop all the wishlists, none of it ever comes true. We have our club, we have our team, we have our squad. Roy is our manager, support the man, stop the sniping.

07 Nov 2010 21:57:39

Great game today, Far from best form but massive improvement. I for one doubted we could and would win today, but great result.
Anyway I think Johnson should be made to sit on bench for a little while, Kelly has proven his worth, big game and he coped well.
I'd say keep same team now for forseable future. I think come Wednesday kelly may need to be subbed as he worked hard today so 3 days might not be enough time for him to recover.
Carnt fault anyone today, Lucas done very well to.
The only thing I can add is I would have liked z bit more attacking specially in second half

07 Nov 2010 21:55:50

"You changed your mind over stupid comments he made . you never liked him blair . you are lying . support our manager and keep your powder dry untill roy deserves it . two nil two nil two nil .
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I said stop lieing!
Roy came on here 2-3 days ago and said to me and ED "I told you so". As Roy has said from the start that Hodgson was no good and me and ED tried to stick up for Hodgson (which Ed confirmed).
Roy or ED can you clarify what was said so this lieing fool can apologise?"

TO ALL CONCERN:
Up to 3 or 4 weeks ago Blair use to have a go at me for criticising Roy H, and used to tell me that all liverpool fans should support their manager and he 'll come good . Blair change of mind about Roy was around the Everton game (I think).

Blair: Have your own opinion mate , you know your football and ignore what everybody else think . if they call u a liar or horse s*eep like that , hk m, should n't let it bother you . just laugh it off.

Roy

Mr Nunn you are correct in those defeats, but when nesv took over are great club only Everton have beat us, so Roy is fighting for his job every week.

We may have won today agaisnt chelski, And i'm over the moon with that. and just to say (if it matters).

Lucas Lieva is a good all round player. maybe needs abit more strength but o well, and i was Loving the news when i heard Raffa was going to try and get him, he was Touted the next Kaka in brazil from some of the pages on the internet.

and i couldnt wait for him to join. i think he joined in the same season as babel. . babel on the other hand i was too sure about, i have dutch friends and they all said at the time liverpool are stupid to buy him he is rubbish and a ball hog and does nothing good. i still had hopes he would be good though. Wrong. he is really bad. . his heart's in the right place Apart from the rants on twitter about raffa not playing him. but his head just hasnt got the intelligence to be in the right place. just isn't a smart enough player.

i have always had faith in lucas though and have always liked him because he has that "work hard head down ignore critic's" mentality. and i hope he stays at liverpool for a long time. he came to liverpool and was an Attacking midfielder. . like gerrard. or kaka. and was turned into a Defensive mid. Bad move. he's not suited. he plays great balls sometimes and plays Great but nobody see's it. just like Kuyt. great pass today for the first goal.

have faith in lucas.

but As for Roy. . i still don't think he's good enough to manage liverpool. i've always noticed liverpool play Amazing football against big teams and Badly against smaller team's, Blackpool for example. but just because we won against chelsea i just hope people don't get ahead of themselve's i'm glad we won, but roy still hasnt proven anything. . and he still looked confused on the sidelines. (hope it's his gameplan to look really worried.)

i still don't think roy is good enough even after the last couple of wins.

But the future is bright for LFC at last (i hope) and i hope John Henry helps us Bring the Revenue from all of the Liverpool fans across the Globe because there is a Huge Fan base that isn't being tapped into.

Rant over (sorry lol)

A lot of players have been linked with us recently and many more will but a few names would be great additions to our squad.
number 1: HULK, he would give us much needed physicallity upfront along with torres and he seems to be scoring goals for fun. prospect of torres+hulk much bring nightmares for defenders. 17 mill for him
number 2: A.young, i realise many people don't like him however he would be cheaper than mata and he also has plenty of experience. it was only a season or two ago when he scored a couple against "them lott from down the road" was he being called a world class player. he would provide plenty of crosses and goals. 15 mill for him.
number 3: people keep suggesting honda but what about lee of bolton? hes a class little player and would be cheaper than honda. 8 mill for him.

40 mill on these players and a few more in summer and we are real contenders next season! !

07 Nov 2010 21:43:42

Ok i've calmed down now lol. why do people belive that any player we are linked with would come cheap and all of our player are worth a fortune e.g hulk for 10-15m are you joking.
after today i think kelly is ready for the big time now. which means with abit of luck roy MIGHT try johnson at rm. it worked for del boy with bale at spurs. alot of people asking for shelvey to play more games and whilst i do agree i don't know where to play him, is his position not occupied by stevie, and rightly so.
just a quick question did some1 on here complain about the pundits on sky sports after last week(allardyce and reid) and today 2 ex liverpool players lol, great to see jamie eating his words about nando and good to see john barnes

Just a thought. you don't think the change in the way the team played in the first half had anything to do with john henry having informal "chats" with senior members of the squad during the week?

The way they played it definately seemed they have had a nudge from somwhere. .and long may it reign

I just want to say that people shouldn't be afraid to voice their opinion for fear of being put down by "senior members." I posted my opinion about kelly a few weeks ago, and it turned into a real debate, in which I managed to take a new stance based on others' opinions. Just saying

Greetings Ed & fellow Reds!

As in my earlier post, ya highlighted for balance in the team.Hope Roy bring back Aquaman cos I definitely like to see us playing the 4-3-3 formation.We just need to get Fernando Llorente and Affelay if Aqua not recalled in January.I also think Kelly is starting to gel with the rest.That's good! So, wot do ya think of these?

- - - - - - - -Reina- - - - - - -

Johnson- Skrtel- Agger- Konchesky

-Meireles- Gerrard- Aquaman/ Affelay

- - Cole- - - Torres- - -Llorente- -

Lucas Leiva was man of the match today IMO. . I know Torres scored the 2 goals that invariably won us the match but I think Lucas was outstanding in midfield today, bear in mind people that he is still playing out of position, but I felt worked his socks off for us today. . he probably more than any other LFC player over the past 2yrs has be ridiculed and been the butt of unfair abuse, and I for one think he answered all of you who have tried say that this guy could not cut it in this league. To all you morons who know only what you watch/ play on/ via your playstations/ wii's and Xbox's, give the lad a break. . he head and shoulders above Poulsen at 5million, Anderson(Scum) 17million (LOL), Mikel/ Zhirkov 30million combined. . Understand this next time you want to try to play premier league football manager 2010, the boy is only 23yrs old, he has played most of his career holding as opposed to attacking midfield (where he made his name or at least where he was spotted by our scouts). Has the boy ever complained?? If he was ever dumb enough to come on these sites to read all the nonsense people (most who know sweet fcuk all about the game or how to play it) write or say. he'd never kick a ball again, least not in Scouseland anyway. Let me take you back to the very late 90's/ early 00's Carragher was our right back and was fcuking shocking there. . there was a skit here in EIRE, where opposing fans used to say Carragher had it in his contract that he wasn't allowed to cross the half way line. . . to put it simply. . Jamie wasn't the best when he broke into the team, but he worked at it. . gave 2 fingers to the boo-boys and his icing on the cake was ISTANBUL 2005, where he answered all those who doubted his ability. . . Lucas has Liverpool in his blood just like Carra did all those years ago, he gives his all even if he has to do the dirty work (that few see)for me he came of age today, and at 23 I think he and those like him (Kelly/ Ayala/ Pacheco) are the future of club. . . . . . I am sure Damien, Tom and JW all recognise this also

07 Nov 2010 21:19:45

Hats of to Lucas, I must admit at the start of the yr he was on my list to be shipped out the door. He has been steadily improving every game but today he showed what he really has in his locker, today's formation suits him and the rest of the team.

Im really hoping that fans don't get naive and carried away with the win. Yes it was a good result, but if it wasnt for some luck that kyrgiakos was injured then kelly wouldn't have started right back, and carragher would have been out of position. I think if hodson stick with the same team then he is learning, but i still have fears he will go back to kyrgiakos on johson. Carragher proved alot of you wrong that he still has it and was brilliant at centre half, and kelly did little wrong. I can't fault Lucas' performance, fair play to the lad. Play the same team for a few weeks if possible roy, lets have some consictency. that first 11 showed that we don't need to buy many players like all you are suggesting, just bring some youth up and strengthen with 2 or 3 signings top, but make them quality signings and not 5 or 6 for like 4m each. I still don't think Konchesky is gd enough, and i am not convinced that win was down to roy, il judge him on wether he keeps the same team or reverts to his old ways, your thoughts ed? {ed's note - I agree mate, the performance was better partially through luck, it is up to Hodgson to capitalise on that stroke of luck and not change things to suit the experienced players. If he does come out with his rubbish about it being unfair on them, then I think it is time to accept he is not going to win us anything.}

07 Nov 2010 21:08:28

What do you think of konchesky so far ed {ed's note - not impressed myself, he got caught out a fair bit again today, he is suspect defensively. Normally he is much better going forward though, he is not really at his best, still I think he is an improvement over the performances Insua was giving last season.}

07 Nov 2010 21:05:05

HODGSON DEBATE:

Todays result is not to the credit of RH, in fact had the owl featured fergie loving al fayed camel team drinkin yes man played Gerrard in CM and supported Torres with a Kuyt/ Jova from day 1 we may not have had a hate campaign. .

Lets get off the "I TOLD YOU SO" mode muppets and applaud Torres, Gerrard and even Lucas for a gritty and powerful display. We didn't let Chelsea settle yet Roy was asking us "to calm down".

Lets get one thing right, we played immense today but Rent boys were missing key players -esp Essien (who would never have let us dictate MF as easy. .

Roy would never have picked Kelly unless SOTO and Johnson both injured so its like we got our best team via default - Not Hodgsons genius! !

LFC BACK KICKING ASS AND MAKING US PROUD -

but Hodgson isn't the man to keep LFC the most successful club in england - and for those roy lovers that means beating Mancs to the league and not kissing whisky faces ass and referring to him as "SIR"

What your thoughts ED?

PETER NUNN YNWA * * * * * {ed's note - it will take more than one good result to prove to me that he has what it takes. I fully agree on the Kelly thing too, he would never have featured if it wasn't for injuries, we would have seen Carra at right back and Kyrgiakos in the middle. I really hope Roy does prove us wrong though and lifts the league trophy, but I still don't see it happening, not with his defensive mindset - especially away from home.}

Offical comm on the porto vs benfica, just said that l`pool s scouts and d.commolie are present just to take a closer look at porto`s star hulk and benfica`s coentrao, they said that we are heavilly link with those two, but there is a small problem real madrid is a favour sign on benfica`s left winger.
ed do we have any chanse to get hulk, he would we great for us and we can get him for round 15mil.?
{Editor's note - Yes, Liverpool would have a strong chance in getting him if they get a European position imo}

Ed, your predictions were wrong today again lol {ed's note - I am so glad about that!}

07 Nov 2010 20:56:54

I think Hulk would be an ideal signing. He is strong, quick and he works ever so hard. He's like a Dirk Kuyt - but younger, with pace and tecnique.

I don't know how much he would cost, but I'd imagine the asking price would be between £10-15m.

Plus, he played in Japan so he would be well known in Asia. His signing would only benefit us off the field as well as on the field.

In response to MansfieldRed's post regarding African players.
In South Africa, our brightest prospect Bongani Khumalo who is club captain of Super Sport United (3 times champions in last 3 years), he is a centre back and very promising player, unfortunately Spurs have agreed a deal with his club so he's going to Spurs in Jan Window, done deal :-(
I would say the second brightest prospect here is Katlego Mphela, he is 25 years old, a striker. Has scored 20 goals in 48 games for his team, and 18 in 37 for the South African national team. I would say he reminds me of Darren Bent, but he is a bit faster.
Ed is there any chance of a scout ever coming to watch him play?

what maxi is currently playing well for a change atm and found his form meireles is quality and sell kuyt?
what have you been sniffin' mate?
i agree with the ins however but believe we should sell johnson and move kelly to 1st choice!

07 Nov 2010 20:51:11

Kuyt shud always av been used up there. if he keeps playin up there and playin well then i wouldn't rush into buying a striker till summer, i would put all my effort into getting 2 decent wingers, because lets be realistic, we won't sign more than 2 very good players in jan.
what u think ed?
also wanna mention that if u look at our fixtures for nov/ dec. spurs away is the only 1 that i can see us droppin points. if we continue playin well ND keep nando n stevie fit that is. .
a lot of very winnable games.
ed? {ed's note - I would say width is the main priority myself, it is clear we are weak out wide. I do agree that the next few fixtures are winnable, though for me I think all fixtures are winnable.}

GREAT PERFORMANCE BY THE POOL
champions league spot is definately on the cards this year!

I really like the 4-4-2 we were playing. lucas has matured incredibly

realistically in january i think there will only be one buy, who this is i do not know. but meireless looks pretty uncomfortable out there. we need an attacking winger such as navas

Just a question ed do you think the poulson deal was connected to aquamans loan because i really don't see what hodgson saw in him

surley a summer signing of roys would be playing most games including today so do you think that we bought him for 5million then in some way that put the price down if they want aqua after the loan period for them to pay

so we only bought poulson as a sweetner for juve to buy aqua

just confused why have you any answers ed or anyone thanks

great site eds thanks for the websiteTazz YNWA

Stil don't no why pacheco ent even on the bench, so now spearing, shelvey, wilson and kelly have been given a starting or bench place on a few occassions (all brithish btw) and pacheco, mavinga, suso and amoo have rarley featured (all not british bar amoo). i just don't get it tbh.

on the other hand, good perfromance from the lads on defeating the raining champs! hodgson to stay until he starts doin poorly again.

Btw, is there two Damien Comollis? Only he was sitting in the stands at Anfield today watching the match and he even appeared on the Sky Sports screen.

May I just say, Lucas was awsome today and seemed to be a fantastic foil for Stevie G in the centre. Torres appeared motivated and fitter today, what a player he is. Credit also to Dirk who seemed to inspire Torres by fighting up front alongside him. John Henry must make sure that we keep the spine of the team and build around it. No more talk of Torres, Pepe leaving please. . .

If we could just add a little more flair, pace and quality on the wings, along with more quality in depth to cater for injuries or loss of form, we would have a fantastic squad and future, particularly with some of the youngsters who seem to be coming through.

Credit where it is due to Roy. I sincerely hope that this run continues and we don't flatter to deceive over the coming weeks. He has taken a fair amount of stick over recent weeks and while I personally remain unconvinced about his ability to lead us to number 19, there is no doubt that he is giving it 100% and for that he deserves our full support.

The stadium atmosphere seemed incredible at times and the fans deserve credit. Lets keep it going and try to support the team onto even greater consistency and success.

Well done to everybody concerned today. Three points and a clean sheet against the Champions should lift confidence higher because not many sides will shut them out this season.
Without getting too pedantic, the best thing was that the endeavour was rewarded but there is obviously still room for improvement so we cannot rest on our laurels. Would have liked to see us press on a bit higher in the second half but we did look better balanced with the emphasis on better.
Torres will rightfully get the headlines but the midfield, particularly Lucas, played their best game this season.
Keep it up boys, onwards and upwards

Shud play kuyt up with torres from now on.
torres looked much more lively with a bit of support, jus like wen gerrard played up with him, except if kuyt is up ther we can play gerrard in his best position.
who agrees?

{Editor's note - Yes I believe we should play Kuyt up top with Torres}

Regarding John W.Henry's comments about increasing Liverpool's global revenue.

Obviously using the big name players will be important to this. Gerrard and Torres are the obvious two who have commerical value, and Joe Cole is another (apparantly they love him in Asia). Other than that, there's not really anyone else.

Maybe Henry has this in mind, maybe not. But why not do what Perez did at R.Madrid with the Golacticos? Now, I don't mean spend £200m on superstar players, I mean possibly splash out maybe £30m on a superstar name, and commercialise the deal itself all over Asia and in Scandanavia (where Liverpool are very popular). Sell shirts, get media publicity etc. and we could make a fair chunk of money from doing that, which would pay for most of the transfer fee. Thats what Perez did with Ronaldo, Beckham, Zidane, Kaka etc.! Obviously Liverpool aren't as big as Madrid, but we have fans in Asia who would drewel at such a deal.

Obviously we don't want Golacticos, but this would increase our popularity globally, expose our commercial potential, and improve our team. Maybe wishful thinking on my part, but it is an idea that has worked twice for Real Madrid and we should explore every possible avenue.

Like Henry said "no stone will go unturned".
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

To add to my post, I think Honda would be an ideal signing both on and off the field. He's a quality player, and he would add much needed quality to our team and depth to our squad.

And I think the impact it would have off the field speaks for itself. How much would he cost? £10m maybe?

There's allot of people on here shouting at anyone that doubted Roy, I think it comes down to expectations. I am made up with the win today but I was not happy with the second half, although I understand why we did it, however your asking for trouble, Chelsea were knocking on the door and it could of easily ended up different. Liverpool of the past wouldn't settle for just 2 goals and sit back. I understand that if Roy gets the results he will stay and rightly so, it's a results business after all, however I want Liverpool to more than just win I want us to play people off the park. I also understand that we haven't got the players to do that at the moment and we hopefully wil be rectify that. I have reservations on whether Roy can attract the type of players we all want as were not exactly playing attractive football and Roy is not particularly known for it, however time will tell. Also I worry that some of the talant we have might go, from what I can gather some of players arn't thrilled with the football, agree, Torres, reina and I know no players bigger than the club we certainly wouldn't of got them goals without Torres today and reina is unreplaceable. Pacheco will certainly be off to Spain in Jan or summer if Roy is in charge which will be a shame because he looks like he has a bright future. Lucas played well today although for me I think he is played out of his natural posistion, he dosent handle the physical prem to well and gets pushed about and shrugged off the ball a bit to easy although on today's performance he was very good and had improved vastly and certainly has a future at the club, I think if he could bulk up a bit he would be great and handle the physical side without an issue. To sum up I would like to see a knew man in charge so that we can get back to the old Liverpool who were unplayable and anfield a place no one wants to visit except us. That's the Liverpool I know, please feel free to abuse me as everyone is entitled to there opinion and I hope I am wrong about Roy and he can prove me wrong because he certainly can't be let go after getting results, it would be unfair and he sounds like a genuinely nice bloke

Hey Ed's .

I remember after the Napoli game you , like I was complaining desperatley about Roy Hodgson's approach and how we would prefer a manager that gets results in the time honoured fashion - Pass and move the Liverpool groove .

Well today I am prepared to say it does not matter who is in charge as long as the football is right , and today it was - just like I had hoped for .

4 consecutive wins and unbeaten since the Derby , we can only hope that Roy Hodgson is going to continue improving the short comings of the side and maximising the successes of the team .

When we play like that it is no wonder NESV think Roy Hodgson is the right man for the job , considering the turmoil that has affected the club , including the emotional state of the players , we have to be positive and hope Roy Hodgson is the best man for the job .

That way we will be enjoying a far superior season to that we have experienced up 'till now .

The buyout caused mayhem and now with an even keel , the team is finding results and producing some quality play .

Well done LFC .

Right first and foremost well done the lads today, great atmosphere great first half two great goals. If Citeh lose and we win we're in fourth place. .
second; Roy before you go gettin on your high horse we won today because we attacked them to death in the first half, they floundered, put the ball out shouted at each other. .and Torres did what he will always do if we attack: Score Goals! !
so why the hell did we play the second half in the flippin anny road stand? ?
Roy seriously we invited them on again and again and again. we aint gonna win headers against Alex, Ivanobic, Terry too often so what the flip is with the long ball, they couldnt get through us in the first half why did we let them in the second?
Anyway we won despite second half tactical nonsense and for me we won because the lads wanted it so badly, don't not EVER stifle a Anfield display with that again please Mr Manager! !
Good win, great three points shame about the 48 hour long second half due to our tactics and yes i do mean hours cos from the kop that's what it felt like.
by the way last rant Howard Webb is a fckn coward his anfield displays over the last three seasons have been absolute shockers yellow? wtf?.

07 Nov 2010 18:57:36

Sorry for the size of this post , but its very interesting-

If there was any doubt as to whether John Henry and his NESV consortium were going to model their ownership at Liverpool on the structures they put in place at the Boston Red Sox, they evaporated on Wednesday afternoon. In appointing Damien Comolli, Tottenham's former director of football, as the club's first director of football strategy – different title, same job – it was entirely reminiscent of the day, in November 2002, when the Red Sox hired 28-year-old Theo Epstein as general manager. Epstein had no formal qualifications in the practical side of baseball but was brimful of knowledge on the theory. Much like Comolli, in respect of football. The American went on to bring two World Series titles to Boston in the space of his first four seasons in the job, not by paying the biggest wages, or signing the most talented players, but through a clear devotion to the principles of sabermetrics. Comolli does not have a body of knowledge to guide him, like young Epstein did when he was appointed, but Henry clearly believes the studious-looking Frenchman can develop it.

Sabermetrics, you ask? "The search for objective knowledge about baseball, " is how Bill James, the man credited with developing the theory, describes it. Essentially, it involves the rigorous analysis of the reams of statistics baseball throws up as a matter of course but, crucially, seeks to analyse them in a different way than convention had previously dictated. The best, and indeed easiest, example concerns "batting average", a statistic which goes back to baseball's inception. It is calculated, quite simply, by dividing the number of hits a batter manages by the number of times he is at the plate. For decades, it was the primary method for judging how successful a batter was but the disciples of sabermetrics deem it an unsatisfactory measure of a batter's worth. Instead, they believe a more useful gauge of precisely that is his ability to help his team score runs, which is why they came up with the formula for "on-base percentage". That is but one small example of how sabermetric practitioners have, over the past 20 years, turned the analysis of baseball on its head.

Henry and NESV, it would seem, are attempting to do something similar in the domain of football. A key component of NESV's ownership strategy with the Red Sox was, and still is, to eke out every possible value on the playing side of the financial equation. In Boston, Epstein used sabermetric principles to identify, and in turn recruit, players that few other franchises had even thought of signing. In essence, the Red Sox became successful because of how efficiently they used the limited cash their owners provided them with. They exploited the inefficiencies in the player recruitment market and reaped the benefits.

Producing a similar value for money seems to be high on Henry's plans for Liverpool, even if football has no direct equivalent to sabermetrics. It's fairly obvious why none exists – there are fewer "data points" to glean statistics from in football because, as a sport, it is less start-stop in nature than baseball – but Henry seems to believe that recruitment by numbers in football is not necessarily impossible, particularly as the statistics accompanying the game get better and better. He will, no doubt, be fascinated by the realm of data provided by Prozone, a service that Roy Hodgson insisted Liverpool sign up to on his appointment this summer. While many have been writing the 63-year-old's Anfield obituary these past few days, Hodgson's belief in statistical worth may be regarded as especially useful under the new regime.

Arsene Wenger, as you'd expect, was one of the first managers to subscribe to Prozone's fledgling services a decade ago, which are entirely confidential to the club who pays for them. The common perception is that the statistics only tell how far a player has run and how many passes he has completed but in truth, those are the numbers that are put up for public consumption; in private, they go far deeper than that, as Wenger explains. "If I know that the passing ability of a player is averaging 3.2 seconds to receive the ball and pass it, and suddenly he goes up to 4.5, I can say to him, 'Listen, you keep the ball too much, we need you to pass it quicker'. If he says 'no', I can say look at the last three games: 2.9 seconds, 3.1, 3.2, 4.5." Word has it that Gilberto Silva, Arsenal's Brazilian international midfielder, was shipped out of the Emirates precisely because he was dwelling on the ball too long. It might not be the type of observation that Wenger would have missed without the data at his fingertips, but it must help to have some affirmation all the same.

Prozone, however, is primarily concerned with performance of current players and while it has recently initiated a service for tracking future signings – which Everton have become the first Premier League club to sign up to – Henry, NESV and now Comolli might be more interested in the transfer theories of Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski. The pair's book Soccernomics (or Why England Lose: And other curious phenomena explained as it was called in its first edition) has become a bible for people who want to turn football convention on its head, just like Michael Lewis's Moneyball was for sabermetrics and baseball.

In its pages, Kuper and Szymanski outline, on the back of their research, a number of faults that exist in the transfer market and suggest where real value might actually lie. They offer a list of 12 transfer principles. Some – that stars of recent major tournaments are overvalued, that older players are overvalued and that you should buy players in their 20s – are pretty obvious but there are some suggestions that NESV might want to consider.

For example, the sabermetric belief that too many "sight-based prejudices" exist in recruitment is backed up by Kuper and Szymanski. They cite a survey conducted on football scouts which found that they regularly throw up the names of blond-haired players more than any other, simply because their hair catches the eye. The pair also make the observation that players of certain nationalities are overvalued – the example is given of the agent who finds it much easier to sell a crap Brazilian than a brilliant Mexican – and that clubs need to put more resources into helping new signings relocate.

There is an interesting tranche of beliefs surrounding the sale of players. Kuper and Szymanski recommend that you should always sell a player if another club offers more than he's worth and that sentimentality should never come into it. They also float the notion that a good way of getting a bargain is to sign a player with personal problems and then help him solve them.

Arguably the most fundamental point that the authors make, however, is that transfer decisions should never be made solely by somebody more interested in the short term. Which is precisely what Henry has done in appointing Comolli to recruit for them. The 38-year-old may have left Tottenham effectively a failure after Juande Ramos was sacked in October 2008 but there is an argument to suggest his White Hart Lane tenure wasn't a complete disappointment. There were as many failures as there were successes – Gareth Bale and Luka Modric on the one side for example; Didier Zokora and David Bentley on the other – when he was responsible for recruitment at the north London club but what's not up for debate is the obtuse manner in which Comolli went about his business.

The Frenchman tended to sign either players in their mid-20s from teams in the top half of European Leagues, or young Englishmen with potential at smaller clubs than Tottenham, rather than established stars. If he wasn't an unqualified success, at least his approach was innovative.

It's something we should expect in Liverpool's transfer dealings from now on.

What a result great performance from the team. i think that has just given us all hope that maybe we won't watch our great club struggle all season like the media would love to c. now the media pundits have to earn their wages because we arent given them the cheap headlines theyve being writing all season. . . the new leeds. . . torres wants out. . . .reina wants out. . . . we are level on points with the apple of the medias eye Harry Redknapps spurs (whom i like by the way). We finished the game with Kelly, Spearing, Shelvey on the pitch a great lift for all the young guys at reserve level. just buzzin absolutely buzzin. what do u all think of Carra and Gerard wanting the young players to train with the senior team all the time, if they think it will help after they came through the ranks surely they are best placed to know best.

07 Nov 2010 18:54:48

Lucas was brilliant today. I have always wanted him to be a success, because we need some Brazilian flare in our team. Benitez was playing him out of position; he needs to be given a more positive role- that's what he was best at when he played for Gremio. Having said that some of his defensive work was very good today.

On the same number of points as Spurs, only 5 points away from City, let's go for it.

P.s ed, who do you want to win the Manchester derby? As much as it pains me to say it, I want united to win because it would be better for us. {ed's note - a draw would probably be the best result for us, United are not playing well either, both could slip this season.}

07 Nov 2010 18:54:02
Great result today. Th eteam is now starting to get confidence and in the first half they were impressive. The second half was a worry though. True, their defending was superb, but Pepe and Carra kept us in it, and there was some shocking missed passes.

In terms of the team, Lucas was great and it was great to have Kuyt back and harrying plaers down, we really need this. Gerrard, Torres and Carra are all getting back to form. Kelly and Konchelsy were solid, as was Skerts. I think Miereles is really starting to bed down as well, and he played in Torres for the second. I still think we are really lacking in mindfield, and I just don't rate Maxi. True he for the goal last week and has the odd shot, but he puts misses far to many passes. What has been noticable midweek and today is that Gerrard if starting to spray passes around of old.

I don't think Gerrard should move deeper, as some suggest. he is best moving forward. We therefore do need a midfield a bit like Didd used to be that is good at holding back and breaking up the play. We are also really missing another top class midfielder that can string passes around like Alonso.

So three PL wins on the bounce and we are looking healthy again. Beating the champions was a great result, but I would have expected us to raise our game for Chelsea.

The next top games if anything are a bigger test and will really show where are in the rebuilding process. We have a shocking away record, but we really need to be beating the likes of Wigan and Stoke. I really hope we keep the momentum up in these games and get some goals.

In the Pl all goals have either been scored or assisted by Gerrard and this needs to change.

Well done everyone on a brilliant performance. Renia, Lucas, Gerrard, kuyt and torres had a fantastic game. Everyone did apart from maxi. We have 4 easier games coming up so I would target 10 points from next 4 games. If we get that then we should be in a top 4 spot.

They had injuries but so did we.

They had- essien, lampard and drogba (first half)

We had- johnson, soto, cole and pacheco.

They had worse injuries then us.

We played good football and everyone should lay off Roy.

07 Nov 2010 18:53:14
Finally kuyt is played upfront and what a difference it made.we need 2 wingers in january and we should be ok til summer

07 Nov 2010 18:52:49

Wat a about the lucas today every year he just gets better and better

07 Nov 2010 18:52:33

You know who lucas reminds me off :) darren fletcher he was deemed to be a bad signing but trough sheer hard work and determination 2 sectors lucas literally crushes. He became a manc regular. maybe beef up a little meireles and happy days ahead still want a winger and i seriously don't like the look of Konchesky. what you think ed?
{Editor's note -He had a brilliant game today but he needs to keep putting in those type of matchs over a period of time before we can all start calling him a top class player, but is playing well atm}

07 Nov 2010 18:52:28

So many players have suddenly found their form and some are performing better than they have ever done before.It was great to see the game end with 4 players
under 22 on the pitch.
Why has Roy suddenly changed strategy? Must have had a nudge from somewhere but whatever, it worked and the future is looking rosy.

07 Nov 2010 18:51:32

I don't meen to put a downer on everyones good mood but knowing us 4 wins in a row and well get beat on wednesday

07 Nov 2010 18:50:32

Totally Agree ED Konchelsy is a bit of a liability but maybe we can do something about it in January. Its Great debating the smaller details about the game than the depressing problems we have had for the last 18 months. The past few months looks like it has Galvanised the squad and made them stronger, certainly the case with Lucas and Gerrard who looks like he is back to his wonderful best, the futures looking bright. Well Guys its time to eat a large slice of humble pie. I was being sucked into this "sack Roy" band wagon. I have to say that that was the best I have seen Liverpool play in a long time. Torres was back to somewhere near his dinamite best, Gerrard was back to his best, Lucas was up against one of the best in form midfielders in the country and came out on top (top performance) and Carra was at the Top of his game. Thats without the performances of Kelly, Pepe, Dirk, and Miereles.
I know its one game but if the team can play like they did today there is no reason why we can't start competing with the top boys again. As I said a couple of weeks ago if we are in a position to challenge in January we will have a great chance of getting our champions league spot back. Whats your opinion ED {ed's note - the first half was superb, I am still worried about Konchesky, he was caught out a few times in the second half but Chelsea failed to make the most of it. I just hope we can continue to play like that week in, week out, that would be enough to get us 4th.}

Would like to say welldone to roy
still not sure your right man for job but well done.

thought we played very well first half mainly
hope we can play like that for 90 mins now.

torres was on fire.

i have a question mark over kelly don't think he is a right back to be honest but did ok

anyway well done lfc
keep it up

07 Nov 2010 18:48:13

Great result today.that should bring confidence and belief throughout the team, we looked like a team today with everybody congratulating each other.the next three games are all winable games for us and i would expect us to get all 9 points.that should see us back in the mix with all the teams above us dropping points.man city, spurs, arsenal are all slipping up and it just show that when you string 3 or 4 results together you can move from bottom 3 to top 3.we need a consistet run now and hopefully in january we can strengthen the squad and get rid of some mediocre and overrated players.

What a result and performance today.
The whole team played superb.
Konchesky played extremly well and is proving his doubters wrong.
Kelly at right back was immense.
Maxi is getting better and better.
Torres is back!
AND. . .Lucas was outstanding. He is definately good enough for LFC. . any doubters are stupid.
We are climbing the table and things are looking up.
The future looks bright for LFC! !

Yes agree completly. excellent first half. couldnt believe i was watching same side. second half we stopped being so adventurous. but yes wonderful result.
Does this change my mind about roy, well it will take more than one 45 minute period, congratulations to all the team for today, but i still don't think roy the man to lead us to greatness again.
However, more than happy to be proved wrong and apologise. .later

I said stop lieing!

Roy came on here 2-3 days ago and said to me and ED "I told you so". As Roy has said from the start that Hodgson was no good and me and ED tried to stick up for Hodgson (which Ed confirmed).

Roy or ED can you clarify what was said so this lieing fool can apologise?

And IF you were not offended by Hodgson's comments in the past few weeks then you don't know what its really like to support the most successful club in English history. Just like Hodgson!

Well what can i say about the game?. . . Every single player was immense.
Lucas looked world class
Meireles was top notch
Kuyt gave his usual 100%
Torres. .silenced the critics today!
Gerrard didn't put a foot wrong

Great win for the reds and really entertaining to watch too, second goal could be goal of the month IMO

I could go on all day but one thing dawned on me today. . i think that performance should of secured martin kellys place as right back he was BRILLIANT!

07 Nov 2010 18:37:33

Great result hanging on in the second half but that injury time penalty should have been given MOM Lucas hardly put a foot wrong chump of the match rodriguez needs to grow a backbone for these tough matches

07 Nov 2010 18:36:23

The world has changed, Lucas will be our key player from now on. keep it up lad!

07 Nov 2010 18:35:01

I think today proves that Torres needs a strong partner. Kuyt may not score 30 goals a season, but he provides space for Torres with his strength and determination. I would definitely play this team again against Wigan.

As for January, I would definitely but quality over quantity. Coentrao, Hugo Almeida and Mata would be fantastic, and if Agger does leave, we should have a look at Jan Verthongen.

Don't get me wrong, there is still a long way to go, but with some more good results, and some quality investment, we could start to build a great team again.

P.s Here's hoping that negative football will be no more!

"All you Hodgson haters F*%#k o#f! you are a disgrace and know nothing of football. You are an embarrassment to our great club."

To defend his earlier tactics (Blackpool, Birmingham, Sunderland, Man City, West Brom) would show you know nothing about football. To blindly defend him even when he is doing a bad job and damaging the club would show you know nothing about football. To criticise him when he deserves criticism is not an embarrassment.
However, since the Blackburn game a lot has changed. I can't fault his tactics today, credit where it's due, he did well. Starting Kelly was a big call and it paid off. Was a bit worried when we sat back the entire 2nd half, but it worked.

07 Nov 2010 18:34:06

Anfield the fotress the heart and soul of liverpool football club i do quite like how hodgson is very grounded which means games against percieved " lesser " opposition like wigan we should win 1 or 2 nil so happy. Confidence im also so happy for fernando so so happy on a selfish level he knew he had to get back so he didn't slip behind the likes of Ronaldo and villa eto'o and today he proved he'd spank that lot all up and down the park ;) ( maybe not eto'o love that guy ) AHHHHHHHHHH YWNA! ! !

07 Nov 2010 18:32:37

Excellent performance today. Thought johnsons injury before hand was a godsend as we looked really solid with kelly. I hope kelly keeps his place for the next few games.

07 Nov 2010 18:31:30

Lionel Blair or whatever your name is you are an absolute idiot. It proves you know nothing about football with that ridiculous last post of yours. As if it was Roy's fault we sat back in the second half. Chelsea are the best team in the League and were always going to have a period of sustained pressure. You are the resident plank on here mate and your stupid little lines don't make you look clever either.

07 Nov 2010 18:30:41

Brilliant - first half looked dangerous 2 great finishes from nando nearly back to his best,
2nd half chelsea played really well, we dug in there kelly, carra skyrtel and konch all did there bit and pepe when we needed him made a couple of great saves but my man of the match was. . . LUCAS absolutely brilliant performance, made tackles intercepted passes broke up attacks and then set liverpool off on attack - hat off to you lad seems like the shackles have been taken off him and he was SUPERB.
kuyt ran his socks off as always anp played well, gerard was back where he hurts the opposition pulling strings and making us move forward but still couldn't outshine lucas today.
all in all 3 wins on the trot and we are looking much more like a team that can and will challenge the fourth spot.
i will settle for 4th, the fa cup and europa league this season an then the title next season - how different the mood in the last few weeks

keep it up redmen

Great result today. I have always craved for Liverpool to play 4-4-2, and put Kuyt up top with Torres. Torres needs the support up there that's been clear for ages now, and that's why he's struggled to score away from home. Kuyt is a perfect partner. He works hard, and he is capable of scoring goals also. And another good thing is, that if we need to be more defensive, Kuyt can drift out to the right, Merieles can drift centrally with Gerrard and Lucas. We're a bigger threat with 4-4-2 without a doubt and I'll be disappointed if we go to Wigan next week and revert back to 4-5-1.

And a mention to Martin Kelly today. He's a good young defender. He got caught a few times, but that's due to his inexperience. I say keep him in the team, let him gain experience and build confidence. People need to remember he had Ashley Cole and Malouda to deal with and boy did he deal with them. Lucas deserves credit aswell, he got stuck in, he was composed, he did well on the ball and he won possession back for us on several occassions. Fair play.

And Jamie Carragher = legend.

So, next week for me, same team against Wigan. Keep Carragher and Skrtel at centre-back.

I finally think we are seeing the real Hodgsons liverpool, he has had to work with alot of players low on confidence from the world cup ect and a poor squad and i thibk it took the team a while to get the defencive system working thts why we didn't score many and now that is getting sorted we can focus on the attacking part!

07 Nov 2010 18:21:16

Ain't that a sweet victory. . but Roy did still play Meireles out of position like we've all been complaining about. So the interesting question must be asked. Do you keep Roy?
Personalyy i still want an attack minded manager, yes there is time to be defensive but not all the time.
I also doubt Roy's abilities in the transfer market. Both in players he buys / wants, and his ability to lure world class players. .
Lucas had another great performance, and welcome back Mr Torres

Where are all you Hodgson haters now. Give him until end of season then make your judgement. Some of the comments I have read on this site about Hodgson have been unbelievable. The man was manager of the year last year, was favourite for next England job and was left with a squad that was second rate. So 4 wins on runs shows his class. Hodgson to bring back glory days.

My second post(after the bellend button(which has not yet been initiated by the way)The red men where superb today, don't like to say I told you so but Lucas was incredible today, we are not far away, a top draw striker(Llorente or Doyle(wolves) and a wide player(Mata, Affellay) good youngsters coming through, happy days are here again(nearly) your thoughts ed? {ed's note - I am much happier with 2 strikers up top, not sure Doyle is worth buying, Kuyt is a better player in my opinion.}

07 Nov 2010 18:06:35

Lucas was man of the match for me, closely followed by Martin Kelly. Both those young lads really dug in, did the dirty work and Lucas made a few really good passes. Maybe now everyone will get off the kid's back. A great team performance though, nobody hid, everyone played their part. Thought we looked a lot better in a 4-4-2, Torres looked a lot happier not being stranded up on his own. We've got some very winnable games coming up now. Let's see where we are after christmas. If we get two good wingers in and another striker I think we could finish in the top four still

Well today the guys showed some spirit and got a result when i'm sure most of us were thinking chelsea were gonna walk it. I don't think one of the players played terrible and they all showed real team work. Well done Liverpool! ! . If we carry on like this i think we will defo get top 4.

Pepe made one great save from malouda yea he was gud but think lucas was brilliant today prob his best game in a liverpool shirt this an the game against man u when we duffed them 4-1 when he stepped in to cover xabi def man of the match today by far out shone stevie g who i thought was quiet today

07 Nov 2010 17:58:49

Lucas take a bow son. . .my man of the match even thou nando got 2 today lucas was awsome! !anyone else think so?? sleeper10

07 Nov 2010 17:58:34

Torres was cliical, but when will lucas get credit, he was a man out there today. and has been consistent all season, but to see it against chelsea was special. yes it has taken 2 years of painful watching, but to sell lucas now would be idiotic. {ed's note - Lucas would have got MOM if Torres hadn't scored two goals, he had a superb game and I am so so pleased for the lad!}

Very good result, but still highlights the fact we sit too deep, don't close players down and are still not very attack minded.

Lastly Maxi deffo penalty. . If that was the mancs it would have been given! !

Liverpool have played great, but there is still a long way to go, and remember Drogba will probs come on. However I really think Chelsea have missed Essien. Kuyt behind Torres, isn't this what we've been crying out for, someone to partner Torres.

I know it would be preferable to get the likes of Mata, but realistically, I don't see this happening. So what do people think of Chung Yong Lee? We were briefly linked to him while Benitez was still in charge and I'd be pleased if we signed him. Quick, tricky and adds width. A proper wide player. Also has prem experience. If we could get him for under £12m I think we'd have a bargain.

For me it's simple Duckula when Roy shows the fans and the club the respect we deserve. Then he will get what he deserves which at the momment is nothing.

WE are not Fulham, Blackburn or even Inter Milan. We are Liverpool!

Blair Mayne YNWA

Look, all im saying is why don't we TRY supporting him and see what happens. He hasnt really been liverpool manager if he hasnt had support from the fans, because he's been playing without the twelfth man. (i mean obviously on the internet, the kop has been NEXT LEVEL recently). All this disaffection rubs off on the players eventually, because they DO read things on the internet. It's our responsibility to show a united front. Thommo said only yesterday that we need to lay off Roy. The point is we could make so much difference to our fortunes by just doing what we're famous for and supporting our family. We all know and appreciate that a lot of people seem to want Roy sacked. You've made your point. So there's no need to be reminded of it everyday when essentially it's not going to change anything. And, having made your point you could now devote your energies to helping us out of this slump rather than pining for greener pastures. I don't mean that to be offensive by the way, i just don't like to see reds lambasting our own club. They say we are the lifeblood of the club. And Roy is the head. So how can the body survive if the blood won't work with the head? (yeah sorry that sounded better in my head!) You're right of course, we are not Blackburn or Fulham or Inter. We are Liverpool. There's SO much more to this club than just our trophy cabinet or our form sheet. We are supposed to be a family. All i want is for us to just get back to loving the club AND the manager, DESPITE his possible shortcomings. Duckula

ps im not going to post anymore for a bit, i think iv made my point and iv spent so much time on my high horse recently my necks starting to hurt, but if anyone wants to enlighten me further i WILL read it, but im sure you're all bored of me harping on like some sort of martyr so il leave u all alone for a while. . . {ed's note - I actually do think you make a very good point.}

Couldn't agree more mate, it is a very slow back 4 although i don't suppose the defenders will be going very far forward today other than the Greek for set pieces. Johnson and Maxi can get back to assist the full backs although we should have a bit more speed going forward if Johnson starts there.

Lets hope we got our very own Bale in the making!
I'M predicing a 2-1 win today. 2 assists from Johnson would be nice too!

I think johnson would be good in midfield but on the left hand side cutting in on his right foot but for todays game on tje right to help out with malouda and a.cole
wot use think

07 Nov 2010 14:45:08

I love torres. .but does anybody agreee tht people say hes quicker than he actually is?
dont get me wrong he has great pace over the 1st ten yards when hes on top of his game but a lot of supporters say hes lightning quick, i have 2 disagree . .

what do u think ed? {ed's note - a lot of it is to do with the head anyway, if he is on top of his game, then he is thinking quicker and he is quicker to get going. A striker only needs a quick burst to get on the ball anyway, anything else is just a plus.}

07 Nov 2010 14:32:51

If we look for a new manager we shouldnt be looking at a quick fix. As mentioned in previous posts a younger hungry manager could build a legacy. Poyet, Di Mateo both good managers who would command the players respect as they were top players. I fear a little for the likes of O'Driscoll because wrightly or wrongly I don't think the players would respect him enough.

07 Nov 2010 14:30:18

The only reason pacheco doesn't get a game for us is because hes to small an not strong enough to play the lone striker role that torres an ngog can play yes ngog may not be good enough yet but hes improving his hold up play his getting far better an more consistant than last year an hes scoring wen giving a chance hes young give him a chance. id like to see pacheco play behind torres an steve an merieles in the centre wed create so much more with that fair enough away from home have a holding player in there we need more creative players in the team to win games.

07 Nov 2010 14:17:49

I see a lot of positive posts about the result of todays game which i pray your right. But i'm worried IF Chelski get an early goal then we could be on the wrong end of a thrashing.

Fingers crossed i'm wrong!

Sadly these days, it is so obvious that every other posting on these pages is by aliens from Everton, Spurs, and Manure fans simply stirring the sh1t to agitate genuine fans of LFC.
Rise above the bait you LFC fans and we'll get the last laugh on them. I hope the result today of a LFC victory will wipe the smiles off the rear ends of those aliens, and they can go back to their own pages sorely embarrassed.
Can you see an MUFC future without Ferguson to intimidate refs and media being successful ?
Look what happened to Spuds yesterday . Somebody 'Baled' out!

To whoever that was that dissected my post paragraph by paragraph, fair enough. An interesting post with some well reasoned, thoughtful points. (i think - i read it last night when i was too drunk to retort, and now i can't find it again). However, you seem to imply that those people calling for the manager's head want success for the club more than i do, which is a complete cop out. Theres nothing i want more than us to become great again. But at the end of the day there's different ways of going about it. 1. You can scream and shout and moan about the obviously under par performances, and attempt to bully the players and manager into improving their form by shaming them and voicing your displeasure. 2. You can accept that the form is bad, and that the club is in a place NONE of the supporters want it to be, and you can do your absolute best to show the players that you love them and you're confident they can drag themselves back to the top. This is the ONLY way you can have a positive effect on the team.
I understand your points about us not being liverpool standard at the moment, but you HAVE to give him a chance. How do you know that all this anti Roy criticism isn't EXACTLY whats holding us back at the moment? He's our manager, and even if you don't like him, he's part of the family now and he certainly deserves a lot more respect from our fans. Like i said anyway, Roys here til jan for sure, so anyone calling for him to go before then is just wasting their breath. . . you would do much better trying to see if option 2 works or not, you never know you might realise that its actually a lot more fun and a lot less soul crushing just focusing on the love of the club rather than using "modern thinking" and just focusing on the love of success. . . . Duckula

Just a question does anyone actually think that Liverpool will win the Premiership with Roy in charge even if he was given 100 million. Like the man but he isn't a premiership winning manager is he.

On another note we've got Pacheo who was the top scorer in the under 19's championship and he can't get a look in while there's Ngog who does and can't score for toffee what's going on Roy your short on strikers there's one sat there give him a chance for crying out loud or were going to lose him. does anyone else agree with me

07 Nov 2010 12:53:07

I agree with what everyone is saying about Pacheco. He should at least be on the bench every week. I think it's time Roy started filling the bench with some of our younger players. .i would much rather see Pacheco, Eccleston and Spearing then Babbel, Jovanavic and Poulson. . . .Thought Eccleston did more against Napoli then Babbel and Jovanavic have done all season

07 Nov 2010 12:51:47

The way forward is to blood the young players like Kelly Darby Mavinga Ayala Suso Ecclestone and Amoo now and see who is goin to be stars for the next Ten years not buying players who as JH has said only come for the money
You will notice that Pacheco is not there i believe that's because he doesn't want to be and we don't want to bring thru young players who want to get off as soon as they have made it we want reds for life

What more does Kyrgiakos have to do to get a bit of respect on this site!? He's been our best performing defender this season but still, people on here, in particular one of the ED's have done nothing but slaughtered him. He's nothing special by any means, but he gives his all. This clubs support is fast becoming a joke! Constant slagging off of players and a manager whose been in charge for a quarter of a season. Its ironic that many moan, saying Roy Hodgson isn't doing things the "Liverpool way" yet a lot of our supporters seem to have forgot how the fans used to also support the team in the "Liverpool way." If all you're going to do is complain and slag off the players & manager, then you're not a supporter, because that's not what you're doing! {ed's note - or perhaps we just want what is best for the club, rather than being happy to put up with any old rubbish just because it is 'the Liverpool way'. Kyrgiakos tries his best, but so do a lot of Sunday league players, it does not make up for the fact that he is not good enough.}

Morning fellow redmen!

the facts as rafa would say. . we are playin dull football at the moment, it is blindingly obvious we need width and a back up striker for nando.

ever the optimist though, remember this time last year we were in horrible form and performances were unadventurous but the manure came to anfield and we turned them over, so if you learn anythin from the premiership, we can still beat the top teams even when in a purple patch. so lets get behind the boys today. i don't care how we win any of our games this season as longs as we are picking up points after a bobbins start we need to string some points together. if you look down the years in the prem, 1 team always is unexpectedley in the bottom half or bottom 3, then they always prevail.
lets look at it like this, we've played arsenal, utd and chelski today. so you would say that wins are achievable against the other teams. we are on the mend results wise, and i only hope we get something out of today, because that will give us confidence and hopfeully nando will come into form, he can score 2 a game against midtable and lower teams on his day. before you know it, january will come and we may have gone undefeated for 10games. i know the performances are s* te, but unless woy changes formation and does all the obvious things like johsnon on right wing and play 2 upfront, we are gonna have to muddle through until transfer window or end of season, where hopefully john dubya henry shows us his real intentions (ie. players / manager?) we can look forward to the back end of season, with possible additions in jan and finish in top 4. that is the only priority, we need champs league footy next year. forget stadiums / cup runs / europa, we need top 4 status back or i fear we will be in trouble.

so lets get behind the boys today! theres too much negativity, over analysis and media involvment in football thesedays. all these things are irrelevant at the end of the year. its points we need, so for godsake ATTACK, score goals and win games and think about the nicey nice and stats after.

another personal note, ive watched every game this year, and paul konchesky is totally overwelmed playing for us. on thurs v napoli im sure he only made 3 completed passes and they were all to the reina or the greek. can nobody else see this? i like the idea i read on another post earlier about johnson on left wing as he can cut in on his stronger foot, and can get to the line and use his left. this would be ideal place for him, if we land affelay in jan, who woul dthen be on the right. but although i would like to see your mata's etc. . i do believe chris brunt could be a good squad player for us. sweet left peg that lad.

anyways ive gone on abit again.
cmon redmen!

07 Nov 2010 12:22:19

Cmon lads lets get behind the boys today and make the atmosphere electric let the 12th man be heard and lets send shivers down the rent boys spines

If Roy had his way:

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Brad Jones. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Johnson. . . . .Cahill. . . . . .Shawcross. . .Konchesky
Duff. . . . . . . Poulsen. . . . Merieles. . . .Jovanovic. .
. . . . . . . . . .C.Cole. . . . . Toverain. . . . . . . . . . .

Well i can only say that Henry seen this comming hense the signing of Comolli!

Would this be Roys plan?

Mr torres its time to stop sulkin an start earnin ya money, u can run terry an whoever else ragged all game if u want to

mr gerrard same as thursday please

mr carragher get that big monster drogba in ya pocket, a good hard kick early on shud do it

mr reina ur the best keeper in the world, remind us why

mr rodriguez another goal wud be nice, also keep hold of ya position an stop runnin round like a lost sheep

mr johnson get forward an cause havoc but don't forget ya defensive duties

anything to add ed ? {ed's note - would be nice if Konchesky proved himself worthy of the shirt today as well, he needs to put in some decent balls when he gets a chance.}

07 Nov 2010 12:08:53

What's your predictions for today ed {ed's note - I will say 3-1 to Chelsea, last time I predicted a win for us we lost, so *fingers crossed* I am wrong again!}

07 Nov 2010 12:03:53

Please, please, please roy open the cage door an let our team play attacking football
we've got the players to do it, most ov the players who demolished man utd, real madrid an chelsea are still here

ed your thoughts ? {ed's note - there is not a lot he can do unless his changes his ways, he needs to stop playing big lumps with no pace at the back. That will allow us to play a few yards further forward and press the ball higher up the pitch. Without doing that, we have to sit back and defend deep.}

07 Nov 2010 10:55:03

Wow if we win we'll probs shoot up to about 8th or 9th top half :) come on liverpool please do it for the fans.

07 Nov 2010 10:43:44

Ed what wud ur team be today? {ed's note - Reina, Kelly, Carra, Mavinga/ Wilson, Konchesky, Meireles, Gerrard, Lucas, Torres, Pacheco, Amoo.}

Pacheco and Amoo aren't good enough ED

Mavinga/ Wilson Will get destroyed by Drog and Malouda

Kelly is ok but johnson showed we need his attacking prowess

No offence but Arsenal proved youth doesn't win titles, and Chelsea isn't the place for them to start

My team
Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Greek, Konk, Maxi, Gerrard, Raul, Lucas, Jova, Torres

Play Lucas and Meireles up higher and gerrard in the Centre! ! {ed's note - what are you talking about? Youth winning titles? We are not going to win a single thing with the dross you have picked! Two slow hoofers at the back with no one for them to hoof the ball up to. No pace so Drogba and the 2 support strikers can just run past them all day unless they defend deep. If they defend deep they will have to resort to hoofing it long to clear their lines and we don't have anyone to hoof it to! You don't even have any kind of width to provide an outlet, nothing there but a team to defend deep and hope to snatch a point.}

07 Nov 2010 10:43:05

Big game today
Chelski are a good team and we have to find their weakness in the opening minutes and the exploit it for 90 mins
Stevie is firing nando may be able to get some form off stevie's

this wud be my team against chelsea

how bout u ed? {ed's note - I would rather give Mavinga or Wilson a chance than let the Greek spend another match totally out of position.}

i understand that ed but will either of these young lads be strong enough to handle drogba, if agger was fit id have him in myself but i believe hes ill {ed's note - will Kyrgiakos be able to handle Drogba's pace? I doubt it very much.}

07 Nov 2010 09:55:41

Ur rite mate but a good performance is needed by everbody not jus torres an gerrard, them 2 carnt beat a team like chelsea on there own, like you say we need to play as a unit, defend as one and attack as one

ed your thoughts ? {ed's note - we need to press higher up the pitch as well, as a team not just one individual on his own.}

07 Nov 2010 09:39:33

Not a rumour guys all I want to say that in order to win today's game toress and gerrard have to put a good performance. The team have to play like a unit. All I want is a win today for Liverpool that is it. Any thoughts ed or any1

Massive game today. Just when you think your out of the mire, you roll back in. We need 3 points today. In the grand scale of things we need a show of intent, as much as 3 points. We need to play 4-4-2, with either Jovanovic, or Kuyt, up front with Nando. We need to start quickly, and batter the door down. We are as important as team today, so let's bring the roof down! We've rattled them before so c'mon, we need a European night atmosphere. I can understand Roy not playing kids, at moment, because we need experience on pitch, but a couple of flyers on bench wouldn't do any harm. Amoo, Pacheco, and Ecclestone. With a couple of usual. YNWA. Steve1961

07 Nov 2010 08:48:48

I think we need to sign four players in jan first two player wud be kevin davis and Gary cahill I, d like to think we wud get them for a good price! ! Then we need a right midfielder maxi not good enough dirk sud play along side Nando or just behind him maybe ashley young wud be a good signing then stevie g can play in his fav position c m were you get the best out of him stevie is the best midfielder in the prem amy other manager in the world wud play him there but rafa and roy don't which to me says it all! ! Then we need A left bk I wud like Wayne bridge but don't think man city wud sell him. I aslo think that we need to look at a new manager I feel sorry for Roy as he was left a team that was in a mess but for long term manager he's not the man the man for me is bus hiddink

07 Nov 2010 07:54:37

If we are to seriously compete today, let alone get 3 points, it's fundamentally crucial that the boys override this joke Hodgson, like they did against Blackburn.
Take the game to Abramovich;press high up the field, close down quickly, keep the ball down, move it with intensity and a high tempo. .just get it in their faces, damn it.This is Anfield ffs.They must NEVER get a breather.

This game is easily WINNABLE. .but with only the right tactics employed.I don't know how many times we've shown that.
But if we gonna go with the joke Hodgson's miserable and appalling excuse for tactics, then boy ye ain't seen nothing yet.
Abramovich will maul and tear the arse of ours.
We've considered in almost every game this season, and Abramovich hitting them as if they're going out of fashion, we could be in for quiet an evening.

So here's to hoping the boys go over the old fart's orders and take Abramovich to the cleaners.You know you want to do it boys. .so go ahead.

Silver Song

PS:Hulk, Afellay and another winger (Payet/ Hazard unestablished type), would be good business in January.
Coentrao, Wiel and maybe one or two NESV unknown/ unearthed-type players in the summer would put us in good stead.

Promote/ play more Kelly, Mavinga, Ayala, Shelvey, Pacheco, Amoo and Suso (if they, stay that is).

Aurelio, Soto, Skrtel, Konchesky, Poulsen, Maxi, Babel, Jovanovic, Spearing and Aqua (like you a lot, lad, but not sure if prem's for you.Besides, you gonna hinder Pacheco's development.) should all be offloaded by when the window closes nxt yr Sep.
So, ed, Hulk, Afellay, Coentrao and Wiel should all be possible between now January and the summer, right?

07 Nov 2010 07:17:35

Eds, do you think we could take Poulsen back to Juve and ask for a refund? He certainly doesn't do what it says on the tin! Ha ha {ed's note - I think they would just laugh at us!}

07 Nov 2010 07:09:29

Ed what do you think the score will be today? Whenever I think we are going to win, we lose, so I am going for 7-0 to Chelsea! {ed's note - 3-1 to Chelsea I think, but I hope I am wrong!}

07 Nov 2010 05:47:17

Well I totally agree with the post below except for the world class player. Understanding the NESV way forward I hope we sign 2 players who will be world class in the future maybe I'm wrong and you would consider them as world class already. The players are Honda and Adam Johnson. Go all out and get them. Honda has versatility and Johnsons class will change the way we play.

Reina

Looking back at Liverpools victories and defeats this season, how do you think we fared so far this season.

Please consider the log position of these teams and performances of opposition

Wins

WBA - brilliant
Blackburn - solid
Bolton - tough

Draws

Sunderland - lucky
? - boring
? - boring

Loss

Arsenal - unlucky
Blackpool - over awed
Man City - out played
Man Utd - lost

Besides the 2 boring draws, I think only the Arsenal game could have got us a draw, that's 1 more point.
The rest is "we should have beaten ?, ? And ?" But we didn't.

Overall I think week in week out the team is getting better and we will rise to the "Summit".
We are possessing more goal threats from the likes of Kyrigiakos, Gerrard, Maxi, Torres, Kuyt, Johnson, Ngog.
I believe if we start taking our chances and start scoring goals no one will stop this team.
Player of the season so far Lucas. He might be our best player come the end of the year.
I feel that if we can find a "world class LW" in january to tweak our side , we will be fine because we have enough promise that will flow through this beautiful squad game after game (babel. Jovanovic. Ngog. Meireles. Lucas. Cole. Shelvey. Pacheco. Ecclestone. Ayala. Aquallani if he stays)
The future looks bright.
Come on you Reds.

Do you think we could have done better in any game?

Roy is such a !@#$%^&. . .as a managerhe needs to get the right player at the right price, n he is willing to spend 36 millions on llorente? ?!
wit 36 millions we cn buy aguero n im prety sure tat he wants to reunited wit his old strike partner(torres) so why is roy nt lookin at him!
bsides tat the way llorente responds to be linked with us is like hes humiliating our club. . its like he is embarrased to be linked wit us. . .

I heard a rumour that wen torres signs a new wit us he put a condition that he won't play in d europa league so tat if he wants to change clubs in jan he cn play in d champions league for d new club.
is it true ed?

Team vs Chelsea

Reina
Johnson Carragher Skrtel Aurelio
Maxi Gerrard Meireles Jovanovic
Torres Kuyt

Dont no why people suddenly rate lucas, he is still as average as he ever was. "hes getting better", "he completed the biggest percentage of passes" so what he adds no dimension to attacking play and most of those passes are backwards or 5 yards which add vertually nothing to our play. id also like jovanovic to be given a strikers role at sum stage in the game.

Need i remind you of his pass to Torres for the goal against Bolton? We rate Lucas because we watch the game and make our own opinions, not judging each performance based on reputation.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
you must of been watching that game very carefully as torres i believe didn't even score against bolton! all im saying is we need to play 4-4-2 to get support up to torres and with only 2 central midfielders in a 4-4-2 its either meireles or lucas and even if meireles hasnt been playing that well latley (THERES ME NOT JUDGING ON REPUTATION), he is better than lucas.

E.H LFC

you weren't watching the game either apparently, because lucas passed it torres, who gave it to maxi. Comprende?

"06 Nov 2010 21:05:30

To the crazy ****. . who is calling hodgson a crazy ******* IF he sells Daniel Agger. Do u ever think of what ur writing b4 u write it. First of all IT'S A RUMOUR! Second Daniel aggers injury record speaks for its self. Danii pacheco will only go out on loan. Remember. . our owners are looking at future stars. Why sell them."

To the blind sw*t that wrote this, firstly I'm not a sw*t of any sort my friend.
If you bothered to look mate, I used the used the word IF in my post.
I did say it was a rumour that we would sell Agger. .
And IF its true, then Roy IS crazy.
Do you not understand the word IF, or what?
Agger does get injured yes, but his record on that is good enough to keep him, given his class. And definitely unless we get someone as good as him.
And how do YOU know Roy will only let pacheco go on loan? Who is your source?
Your source is a rumour, same as mine. Except mine makes more sense, given Roy's record. He had to buy Konch cos he was English, he was cheap, and he had no time to look properly. But there are no excuses for mad decisions any more.
Pacheco is on verge of being a top class player-he needs to get used to playing in stadiums in front of 50,000 people every week, not in stupid reserve games with 100 people watching.
All we know is pacheco and Agger don't get a look in, even to the point of playing others players like shelvey out of position where pacheco would clearly be better. And that much is obvious to any sw*t.

I know this will never happen. but, just imagine having adam johnson and marc albrighton in the wings. WOW!

07 Nov 2010 00:28:21

I too have been a Liverpool supporter for 40 years ( first game on Kop Coventry FA cup replay 3 - 0).
I don't see why the manager should be supported blindly no matter what. Hodgson has spent money unbelievably badly (Poulsen), is tactically stuck in the 70s, and comes across incredibly weakly in press conferences.
He should be nowhere near a club of this stature, there are at least 10 EPL managers ahead of him in that queue, with plenty more from Europe.
The team will always have my support, but this is my club not his (I'll still be here in 10 years time), but he needs to go now.

07 Nov 2010 00:20:56

YOU know and I know we only just scrapped through them games except Thursday when the player that's saves us again and again comes on and does what we do best and attacks them and the rest pick their game up Roy just sits there scratching his head. There were long periods where we looked we didn't know what to with no direction from the bench

07 Nov 2010 00:10:29
I've a great feeling for tomorrows match, something I haven't had all season. If we can get a win or even a draw where we play good football, then our season can really take off. Anfield will be rockin tomorrow & the first goal will be crucial, but I really think we will win which would have been a crazy thought 2 weeks ago.

do u remember when roy keane broke the guy of coventrys leg?
that was disgusting and nobody questioned why united had him in there team,

I was responding to a person who has a problem with people's spelling, etc. Did you not sense the sarcasm in my post? I am in agreement with you. .if you take the trouble to actually read my post. .but firstly, do yourself a favour and get a dictionary before you try to correct someone's spelling.
