Looking at all the big teams this season, its looking like its gunna be who can out score the rest, not much improvement done in the back fours for me.

City, all useless bar kompany, stones is not what they need, their bets defence will be hoping to keep the ball for 90 minutes.

Arsenal, I like bellerin attacking, Montreal is average, and they look like they will have the first choice three out for a bit, rumoured to be looking at Johnny Evans (hilarious if true) .

Chelsea, average age of about 60, terry can't have long left, ivanovic lost it last year and Cahill is plain average too.

Liverpool, Moreno or Milner, neither defensively great, clyne the best of a bad bunch, maybe a, partnership can be developed between two of the 4.

Tottenham, probably the best for me, alderweireld had a great season and lloris is quality, rose and walker aren't great, but not many decent full backs around, and the toughest defence last year for most of last season.

United, blind is a stop gap, smalling just relies on physicality and pulls as much as skrtel, shaw has potential, but right back looks an issue for me. Bailly yet to be seen, maybe a little rash, but physically good.

Best defence for me, when fit, de gea, bellerin, kompany, koscielny (not even a good player, just who else?! ) and I couldn't pick a left back I'd have. Probably shaw as he has the biggest pot ethical, but defensively isn't good yet.

Is defence dying out?

Chelsea are going to be extremely defensive this season with Matic and Kante sitting in front of the defence.

Mourinho teams always play defensive, and with De Gea, Smalling and possibly Bailey, United should have a decent defensive record this season.

Like you said Spurs already have a good defence and while Arsneal have a leaky defence with injuries, once everyone's fit they'll have the same defence as last season, which isn't a problem.

The only teams who will have the mindset of out scoring the opponent is Liverpool and Manchester City, but they arguably have the best attacking options in the Prem. Going to be a close season whoever wins.

09 Aug 2016 21:11:56
Other teams look useful as well. Can't understand why Leicester are just written off? Did that last season and look what happened, not saying retain but ignorant to just ignore current champions. Everton and West Ham will be better and stronger, Palace, Stoke and Bournemouth have potential to have better seasons. This is the strongest league, only 4-5 'easy' teams for 3 points. The rest are all capable of top 7.

09 Aug 2016 21:55:53
Chelsea do not worry me at all. United will be there abouts but city and arsenal are the real dangers Imo. Man city will be a force next season no doubts whatsoever. I truly hope klopp can take us to another level and we sort out the lb position.

09 Aug 2016 22:32:04
LC will have too many games to play and they may well struggle as they aren't used to it. Arsenal will be the same as in, more of the same. Chelsea will be boring to watch especially on the road as Conte is not who you want if you're looking to play entertaining football. Utd? We shall see with Pogba arriving and Mou settle in. City will be interesting for me as I think Pep will get a rude awakening when he arrives on a cold windy day at Stoke.

09 Aug 2016 22:46:20
Chelsea will have enough to grind out 38 1-0 wins. And that is all they need to do.

09 Aug 2016 23:29:42
For me, I think our defence is looking much stronger than last year. Klavan and Matip are upgrades (and Karius will push Migs) and let's not forget that our midfield should be much less prone to being overrun - particularly with Hendo back.
Forget about the other teams - let's get behind ours and push them to a league title.

09 Aug 2016 23:34:10
I'm prepared to wager all of my net worth (plus an extra £10 to make it interesting) that Chelsea will not grind out 38 1-0 wins.

You up for it, Mr Shankly?

10 Aug 2016 01:12:14
#fencey imo Clyne is the best rb in the league, going forward and back is even I'd say call it 80% both directions. I no walker will b compared but I think he's 70/ 75% forward n 60 back. Azpiculetta I'd say opposite to walker. Who else? anyone?

{Ed001's Note - Bellerin is much better than Clyne. Coleman on form is better too.}

10 Aug 2016 03:08:38
The maximum number of 1-0 wins Chelsea can get is only 36 which will not be enough.

{Ed001's Note - actually it is 19, as they are away from home for the other 19 games....}

10 Aug 2016 06:33:25
18 then Ed 😄

No-one can beat us this season 😎.

10 Aug 2016 07:49:35
Before you scroll down to see the poster, you just know it's a Ron Keague post. 😂😂👍😎.

{Ed001's Note - you have to love his positivity!}

10 Aug 2016 08:27:20
You're net worth Zeddicus? Surely you can't bet on negative equity? 😂.

10 Aug 2016 10:30:30
That's why I chucked in the extra £10 Mr Shankly ;)

09 Aug 2016 19:57:28
Does anyone have the Fantasy League Pin? I can't find it when searching, Thanks all.

09 Aug 2016 21:46:00
160919-52411. I believe this is it.

10 Aug 2016 10:31:05
I had it.

I sat on it.

It hurt.

That is all.

09 Aug 2016 19:23:18
Ed001 what do you think about LFC strikers going into the season?
Who do you feel will lead the line this season

I expected us to sign a big name striker (after sales) this season but klopp went for goals of other positions with mane and GW.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

{Ed001's Note - we have the strikers to score plenty, they are an excellent group, with very different skillsets. I don't think one will lead the line completely, there will be changes for different games.}

09 Aug 2016 19:36:00
True ed I'm just old school love a main man banging them in like the Torres Suarez buzz don't like rotating teams that much.

09 Aug 2016 21:15:58
Should be Origi as the main striker and Ings, Firmino to rotate support or be 'different' tactics during a match. Sturridge to cover Origi in the 12 games he'll play. Hope I'm wrong as I love Sturridge, but just can't see him being any different with injuries this season.

Can see a lot more goals from Midfield, Grujic can't stop scoring in preseason and Georgino, Coutinho and Mane should each hit double figures the way we play sometimes.

09 Aug 2016 22:34:59
Our strikers offer different things and can play multiple positions if needed. Love it.

10 Aug 2016 00:08:20
Sturridge, Origi and Ings on paper doesn't sound too terrifying, but all 3 are very very good players and all of them are capable of scoring goals.

I'm really excited to see Ings play under Klopp.

10 Aug 2016 01:17:01
Ed 1 I totally agree about our strikers, this time last yr I posted on this I even said add benteke n we've got a decent-v good strikers for any style/ formation, if u could repost that one from last yr please would b a good discussion topic, would u agree. Thanks.

{Ed001's Note - for starters, I don't have time to go looking for random posts to repost. Secondly, why on earth would anyone think Benteke would be a good signing for us? He could be, if he bothered. He should be in that six yard box as much as possible, instead he is hanging around on the edge of the box totally useless 99 times out of 100.}

09 Aug 2016 18:59:43
Bolasie to Everton for a fee to rise to 30 million they have money now pay up for Benteke and move along please.

Believable8 Unbelievable2

09 Aug 2016 16:46:51
Benteke for bolasie? I'd settle for that in my opinion.

Believable3 Unbelievable18

09 Aug 2016 16:53:53
Please god no. Ridiculously overrated.

09 Aug 2016 17:42:10
Would love him but we got coutinho in that postion.

09 Aug 2016 17:42:50
Yeah no thanks. Give us the money for a new left back or even just to offset some of our spending.

09 Aug 2016 17:59:41
Bolasie has his good points. Wicked shot, lightning fast, strong as an ox etc.

However his overall game is pretty poor and he is inconsistent. Rather utilise Ojo than sign a guy who should be in the 100m race against Bolt.

09 Aug 2016 18:05:26
Bolasie flatters to decieve. He looks good on a highlight reel but is really just a sprinter with limited footballing ability. Steer well clear, esp if it's blocks Ojo from getting opportunities. 30mil and invest in a lb. window over and pretty successful!

09 Aug 2016 19:18:42
He's going to Everton. They will use the money to then buy Benteke.

09 Aug 2016 19:28:06
Bolasie? Really? The guy is awful. Typical of the Premiership player England managers love. Big, strong, fast, good shot and that`s about all. No skill, no tactical awatreness, to technical ability, very little end product, very inconsistent and most of all, overrated as heck. No thanks! Origi`s left peg is far better than this guy.

09 Aug 2016 19:30:17
Ha ha Jesus benteke for bolasie unbelievable statement.

09 Aug 2016 20:00:18
I think he was talking about Palace selling Bolasie and replacing him with Benteke. Not us buying him lol.

09 Aug 2016 20:06:26
Think the op is talking about crystal palaces deal out of this, at least I hope they are anyway.

10 Aug 2016 01:18:14
Bolasie is a beefed up wanchope.

10 Aug 2016 03:56:16
i swear everton have bought him because they may stand a chance of beating us this year. Bolasie has 2 very good games a year - both against us.

10 Aug 2016 08:38:21
Beefed up Wanchope? Is that not a t-bone? I'm here all week.

09 Aug 2016 15:51:41
Hey ed01, tried the search but nothing new I know it only a few days but is there any news on sturridges injury, is it still comcidered minor? Or is it more serious, thanks.

Believable2 Unbelievable4

{Ed001's Note - they are always very cautious with him, so it is difficult to be sure, but it is still believed to be minor.}

09 Aug 2016 19:07:17
Thanks ed, appreciate the reply.

{Ed001's Note - welcome.}

09 Aug 2016 14:11:43
Hi fellow RED'S
Would Danny Ings benefit from a season long loan? As things stand Klopp only play's 1 forward through the middle. Think Firmino will start the season in this position, backed up by Sturridge and Origi. Wide/ inside forwards seem likely to be Coutinho, Lallana, Mane, Ojo leaving Ings very limited quality minutes to fully recover from a serious injury. 400-600 minutes with us in cup competitions and odd sub appearances, or 2500-3500 minutes in a competitive premier league team, such as Burnley, Sunderland or maybe even top end championship say Newcastle, Norwich etc. Think long term would be more beneficial for us. We'd have a better player 17/ 18 season going forward. My only concern would be Sturridge's injury record possibly leaving us short in a congested Xmas period for example.
Thoughts?

Believable1 Unbelievable19

09 Aug 2016 14:37:35
Can we rely on Sturridge .

09 Aug 2016 15:01:14
I suspect it's going to take injuries or a major loss of form to our established players for Ings to get extended game time. A loan may be beneficial but it slightly says there's no place for him at Liverpool. I'd like him to stay and see if he can take his chances when the opportunity arises.

09 Aug 2016 17:59:51
Ings will outscore all our strikers given the chance.

He will surprise many this season.

09 Aug 2016 18:58:03
Think people forget two things. Firstly, he was scoring and doing well before that injury and looked like he'd go on to score a good few more. Second thing to remember is Sturridge will play about 20-25% of our games. Ings should stay and Origi will become our first, reliable, choice striker.

I'd sell Sturridge if he maintains his injury room stays after a season with the new fitness coach. If he cannot be relied on, we don't want others like Origi to want a move as they get overlooked every time he comes back for a game or three.

10 Aug 2016 01:24:19
Something klopp said a couple of times last season stuck with me, he doesn't just look at the physical fitness week in week out its also about being 'fresh in mind' I think the term he used, that imo would indicate ings (poss all the squad too) will get games so it won't be about being too tired but rather another player is fresh.

09 Aug 2016 14:10:30
I like benteke he is a good player scored goals for us 8 or 9 but did not fit in klopp play. If benteke gose leaves the club I wish him best of luck. who will wear number nine shirt who do you think should take it. your thoughts on players YnwaLFC klopp.

Believable5 Unbelievable3

09 Aug 2016 14:37:56
Origi.

09 Aug 2016 20:41:33
The number 9 shirt, like respect should not be given it has to be earned.

09 Aug 2016 22:01:20
I'd prefer for someone to take it without it being a burden and have the confidence to prove they deserve it, rather than ducking it like ings did. Pretty sure origi would take it but I'd rather leave it open for Messi.

09 Aug 2016 13:49:16
I really wanted us to make Ashley Williams a red 12m is a bargain! We should have signed him 3 years ago!

Believable4 Unbelievable22

09 Aug 2016 14:15:41
Ashley Williams is a very average CB butis a leader and is very brave. Those two should never be mixed together as Skrtel was brave too yet he was an awful CB.

09 Aug 2016 15:28:59
OK Cincyred Ashley Williams is not a average centre back at all, he reads the game so well, he is a great commander of the box defensively, great positioning. He is clearly a lot better than average? Eds how do you feel about Ashley Williams - surely a bargain!

{Ed001's Note - not a fan personally, he struggled once Swansea tried to open up and he actually had to defend without massed ranks of midfielders in front of him. Great captain, but average player. Reminds me of Skrtel, in that his positioning is dodgy and he pulls shirts a lot. The only reason he is a lot better than Skrtel is that he is quicker and stronger.}

09 Aug 2016 15:52:11
very good to hear your views, being a Welshman and watched him drag Wales from the depth of losing to Estonia to the semis. He will be a great replacement for the Everton for Stones especially for the next 4 years!

Thanks Eds for the continued extremely thorough and hard work you endeavour! Much appreciated world wide I know!

{Ed001's Note - he is well suited to Wales, they play deep, which means his positioning is not exposed. They provide good protection from midfield too. So he can be what he is best at - a captain. He is a very good leader.}

09 Aug 2016 17:07:14
Did someone say Skrtel was brave? I'd say he got bullied by many players playing for lesser teams - that cup game against Oldham a few years ago springs to mind.

09 Aug 2016 17:57:11
Skrtle was brave.

Stop being fickle and give the lad some respect.

{Ed001's Note - he was far from brave. He spent a year bottling out of every header after a clash of heads with Carra, while Carra wanted to carry on playing. Even though it was Carra who suffered more damage. Skrtel looked tough but was a pussycat. It is not fickle, nor it is disrespectful to point out the flaws in his game. Grow up! You are so pc it is pathetic.}

09 Aug 2016 18:17:34
Skrtel was a grafter. A very average player, a very limited athlete, and mentally very weak. But you cannot discredit his passion. Brave? I'd question that. It depends on how you define brave. He'd never shy out of a block, but he regularly went in for tackles and headers half heartedly. I will miss his never say die attitude and the passion he celebrated goals with. But it was all a front. Off the pitch he was anything but passionate. He'd be a Man City player had he got his way. It's a farce that Agger turned down Barcelona and still got forced out the door before Skrtel.

Skrtel had some good moments. Some of his headed goals were bullets. I will choose to remember those because if I think about his defending it gives me nightmares.

09 Aug 2016 19:42:57
Williams good for 4 years at Everton, BigEd? You do know almost 32 right now and won`t get any better, right? He looks good in a system that protects him as ED said but when exposed (as he will be here if he came to LFC), he would be found out for the poor CB he actually is and ED just proved my point. Skrtel was passionate yes BUT about getting his money and trying to shaft us because we wouldn`t let him go to City. He`s been bullied by almost every striker he`s played against (Benteke owned him everytime while at Villa) so to say he`s passionate is ridiculous. He is everything BUT.

09 Aug 2016 20:55:59
Dagger was going through hell to play and there is no doubt just how brave he was. And a great club servant. I wish him the best for his future.

09 Aug 2016 21:50:18
Skrtl was too prone to making basic errors and resorted to pulling shirts too often.

09 Aug 2016 22:37:43
Dagger. Now that was true bravery. He rejected Barcelona and City to stay with us and was miles better than Skrtel. Great player and even a better man.

10 Aug 2016 00:16:38
12 million for aback up, 31yr old CB.

As a Welshman I love ash, and sorry to disagree eds he is far superior to skyrtyl. Ashley Willian's would never bottle it or be bullied like skittles did.

Saying that he is not for us at 31and 12 million when we have 3 better and younger cbs at the club

Lovren- sahko- matip--- with a keeper who can communicate and organise will look like world beaters.

With can hendo or grugic in front, I actually think we will for the first time since Rafa be organised and hard to break down

Obv need for a left back. And don't know enough about klavan to comment.

Still feel we need studge to stay fit to get top 4 tho.

{Ed001's Note - I said he was better than Skrtel, what is your point? How are you disagreeing? Or are you just pointing out why we editors get so frustrated with people as no one ever actually bothers to read what we say and just makes up stuff in their head?}

09 Aug 2016 12:08:45
Thanks, but if it's Hendo then I'm worried as when he's jockeying a player he is consistently caught the wrong side and isn't a great tackler .

Believable3 Unbelievable13

09 Aug 2016 13:59:47
I agree with you in that I also hope Hendo is not used as a defensive midfielder. But that is because I would rather we play 2 central midfielders (Hendo, Can, Stewart etc) with a more attacking midfielder ahead of them (Grujic, Wijnaldum etc) . Rather than put a dedicated destroyer behind a 2 man central midfield pairing, I would put a dedicated attacking midfielder ahead of the central pair.

If the 2 men in traditional midfield roles do their jobs properly then you don't need a player behind them to mask their inefficiencies.

09 Aug 2016 10:41:27
Hi Eds,

Do you guys know which entity gets the revenue from shirt sales? is it the kit sponsor or the club or a mixture of both?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - The kit manufacturer and a percentage to the retailer.}

09 Aug 2016 10:59:36
So nothing to the club?

{Ed002's Note - The club are paid through the deal with the shirt manufactures - Warrior as was and now New Balance.}

09 Aug 2016 11:01:56
Ed02 does that mean it's best to always purchase the merchandise from the club shop rather than a sports direct etc? I always use the club shop myself as I think I recall a few years ago that a percentage went to the academy .

{Ed002's Note - The money from shirt sales goes to the manufacturer, the distributor and the retailer, who can make extra adding numbers and names to the shirts. If the club are the retailer (club shop, club website etc.) then they get the retailers cut. The manufacturer (Adidas, Umbro, Nike etc.) pay the club an amount each year which allows them to manufacture and sell the shirts using the correct logos etc.. That is how they justify the money given to the club. So if you walk in to a high street store and buy a Liverpool or Arsenal shirt - nothing goes to the club. There are a few clubs that have negotiated different deals with manufacturers (Real Madrid with Adidas and Barcelona with Nike are the two obvious examples) based upon joint reselling ventures. So the income from shirts is fixed to the £xM or whatever Adidas, Nike etc. pay the club plus a small amount for reselling through the club retail outlets (shop, web).}

09 Aug 2016 11:22:58
Interesting that Ed, never thought about it before but I keep seeing Utd fans claiming they've sold £75m of Ibrahimovic shirts so that's paid for most of Pogba - safe to say that's effectively nonsense or do Utd have a different deal?

{Ed002's Note - No, it is complete nonsense.}

09 Aug 2016 11:25:07
Interesting question/ answer! I always assumed the club got direct revenue from each shirt sold. Thanks ED002.

{Ed002's Note - Then what would be in it for Adidas or whoever has already paid the club?}

09 Aug 2016 11:09:45
That's great really informative . Thanks ed002 much appreciated.

09 Aug 2016 11:40:45
Sorry - I was unclear. I assumed they got a small percentage of each shirt, not 100%.

{Ed002's Note - Why, the club have already been paid?}

09 Aug 2016 12:13:02
johnnyr1970 it was an argument with a Manc that got me to ask this question:p

I was taunting over the failed high priced move for Di Maria and was being told its been recouped through shirt sales.

Thanks Ed for the info.

09 Aug 2016 12:38:07
It's a of bollocks. that would be almost a million shirts with a single name on it even if the club were to get 100% of the revenue and ignoring manufacturing etc. costs.

09 Aug 2016 13:19:37
Ed002, do you know if any clubs have ever considered manufacturing their own shirts so that it is they who receive the income of shirt sales?

{Ed002's Note - Why on earth would they do that? They are football clubs and do not have the facilities to manufacture shirts. They have no distribution network, and no infrastructure for selling large numbers.}

09 Aug 2016 13:34:29
Even if they did get every penny from the sales it would mean they would have had to have sold almost their entire annual shirt sales in the 2 weeks since they bought zlat. It's complete bollocks.

09 Aug 2016 13:41:11
On that point Ed002 I think he was referring to what I think, was it an Italian side who created a polo shirt after signing a player from Asia and remember reading it paid his transfer fee outright.

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what he was referring to.}

09 Aug 2016 13:47:03
Yeah good point. Set up cost would probably take years to be made back in profits.

I was Just wondering if any clubs had considered making such an investment.

{Ed002's Note - No more so than Liverpool has thought about refining paraffin wax to save money on buying crayons for the players lounge.}

09 Aug 2016 14:08:47
Ed2, don't ever change :)

09 Aug 2016 14:34:32
Harsh. Although with Balotelli, Enrique and Mignolet on the list of recent players, crayons in the players lounge probably seemed like a good idea. At least Mignolet could have practiced staying in the lines. Might have helped his goal kicks stay in play!

09 Aug 2016 14:39:22
Would there be provisions based on UCL qualification. i. e any failure to qualify will result in deduction of monies to The Club. Also is it common for sponsors put in a clause so maybe mid way through the deal they can assess to see how things are looking and the flexibility to end an agreement early if things aren't working out?

{Ed002's Note - Not for shirt deals - you are thinking of club sponsors like Standard Chartered where that was the case.}

09 Aug 2016 16:22:30
Im sure the saints didn't have a shirt manufacturing sponsor last season or the season before as they could not agree on a fee, if I remember right.
Don't know anything on the logistics of the matter.

{Ed001's Note - yes, they produced their own for a season.}

09 Aug 2016 17:49:44
Ed002 explained it above. These manufactures pay a lot of money to have the rights to sell a clubs products/ merchandise. I think the New Balance/ Warrior deal for Liverpool is worth £300 million over 5-6 years.

09 Aug 2016 17:54:44
Ed002 is a very patient entity (M/ F)

09 Aug 2016 19:36:53
Absolutely right Ron, Ed002 has explained this several times in the past. He/ she must have the patience of a saint.

09 Aug 2016 08:35:33
ED001, are you doing your Podcasts again this season?
Forgive me if this has already been covered.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - hopefully mate. It is just finding the time, as both myself and Benny are very busy. I will be in Spain though, as of next month, so time zones will be closer. Though not sure how much time I will have as I will be spending a bit time establishing links with a few of the Spanish clubs, as I struggle a bit to get info from there.}

09 Aug 2016 08:15:14
Morning eds and reds! I've decided to make a hangover post because I've decided you are all too negative! this summer I have seen nothing but doom and gloom on here bar some wild wishful thinking of some players that probably would never end up at our club anyway! With this said the new season is upon us and we have a team that klopp I would imagine is happy with and me personally am delighted with. Yes we may have some weakness but we also have a lot of strength! i believe we will have a good league season and potentially a final in the fa cup/ league cup.

Believable15 Unbelievable1

09 Aug 2016 11:05:11
"Wild wishful thinking"?

Who from? 🤔.

09 Aug 2016 13:55:45
Not referring to you, Ron, surely? ;)

09 Aug 2016 07:25:44
With the season about to start against Arsenal i'm very excited and a little nervous too.

We ended last season and everyone knew we needed to strengthen in 3 positions being GK, LB and CB

Going into the first game sadly we will still have mignolet and Moreno playing at GK and LB although the CB position seems to have been addressed well.

Although i like the look of Karius and its sad that he got injured i think we missed a trick by not going and getting a more established goal keeper (not a young one with potential) whether it be for a lot of money or small money.

GK position is very important and mess ups from the goalie can have a really bad effect on the defense and team as we have seen last year.

Also i'm hoping we go an get a proper left back before close of the window as moreno looks to be making the same mistakes.

Believable8 Unbelievable11

09 Aug 2016 08:37:07
Karius is a very good goalkeeper WITH potential to grow. It's not that he's currently rubbish and may grow in the future. Left back on the other hand, I completely agree with you.

09 Aug 2016 13:41:59
Migs is in goal because Karius is injured, who is a very good GK who can still improve himself and us. He was voted second best GK by his peers in the Bundesliga behind Neuer, in a league where one can pick as much as 4 GK`s who can be England no. 1 (Neuer, Sommer, Leno, n Zieler), and who is knocking on the door of the German national team as he would have been first choice at the Olympics. He should be given time to settle and learn and not be slated for the first mistake he makes. Migs was given three years to prove himself (which he hasn`t) so it`s only fair to give the same time to Karius. CB`s have been addressed. I agree that the LB situation is a shambles and we need one fast.

09 Aug 2016 14:54:34
I am not doubting that he has huge potential (bearing in mind I have not seen him play) and ofcourse he should be given time to settle and back even if he makes errors as he is a young goal keeper

What my point is that for once it would have been nice to go an get a proven goal keeper. We need that right now because as far as i remember from dudek to now we've not had an assured keeper.

For instance we could have gone and bought cech beginning of last season. Someone like that.

09 Aug 2016 16:26:14
Pepe?

09 Aug 2016 16:26:14
Pepe?

09 Aug 2016 19:48:08
The CB? because we know the GK is all washed up.

09 Aug 2016 06:43:07
Hey ed001, wondering what your opinion is on Coutinho staying on for another season, as i was under the impression that he would look to move on after the final defeat (even though he could have changed the game himself imo)

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I am glad he looks to be staying. He is young and inconsistent, but consistency is something players develop with experience. On his day he is a top player and we need more quality, not less. Keeping him is a big boost.}

09 Aug 2016 07:18:14
He will probably do well with better quality players around rather than the full on reliance on him at the start of previous two seasons.

Although i'm going to stop thinking that this is going to be a big season for Couthinio like the start of every season.

09 Aug 2016 09:22:32
Would be massive if we hold on to Couts (Barca and PSG), Firmino (City) and Hendo (Spurs) .

We need to somehow make this club attractive enough to our best players for them to want to stay, and then we can build for the future.

09 Aug 2016 09:32:38
I'm very glad he's stayed and Klopp is right about us needing to keep our best talent. He's got the X factor you need to break down the worlds best defences.

Having said that, I'm still not 100% sure his best position is left wing. He's good enough to play almost anywhere and shine, but for me his best position was at LM in 13/ 14 season in a 4-3-3. From there he could dictate play more and played some incredible passes whereas at LW he's slightly more constrained.

09 Aug 2016 13:47:42
His best position to me, is on the left wing with a license to roam in-field and set up through balls. This is where he played and shined at Inter before he came to us. He has been tried behind the two strikers and hasn`t been good enuff there, IMO. When he comes in from the wing, the field becomes bigger and there is a wider angled view of the pitch where one can see various options for a pass. He can`t do that from the natural playmaker position which is why he is much better coming in from the left to shoot or slide a pass through. he should stick to that position as that is also the position he plays for Brazil.

09 Aug 2016 16:21:56
I think Coutinho would be best playing deeper, similar to what Modric does for Madrid. The season where we won the title, he caused havoc playing a bit deeper and not so wide.

I would be tempted to play him in the traditional centre mid spot with a bit of defensive cover/ runners alongside him.

09 Aug 2016 19:48:51
That`s not a bad idea, JH. Ed actually thinks he`ll be good there.

09 Aug 2016 03:02:39
top 4 is achievable this year imo, but god I would love the title, it has gone on to long this title drought, I was 13yrs old the last time it happened. I would also like to thank ed001 and ed002 for helping us separate fact from fiction this summer there insight and info is invaluable, thanks eds. let's hope for a sucsessfull season fellow red fans, as Leicester proved last year, anything is possible.

Believable7 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - thank you kk7.}

09 Aug 2016 08:29:54
Unfortunately I think the title will go to the reds from Manchester. I can't ser anyone in touching distance from them, certainly not us. 4th hopefully for us if everything click and no more injuries. Don't undetstand why we alwsys top the injury table. We topped it most of the last two seasons, and already top of this table now, and the league didn't even started. Is something wrong with our training methods? It is not only Sturridge.

09 Aug 2016 09:28:47
I am not so sure on United. Their midfield is gutless. Carrick has the excuse of being an OAP, Rooney is an overweight striker, Schneiderlin has not lived up to expectation, Herrara is more of a number 10, Pogba is also best in a more advanced or free role.

Not to mention their defence which is absolutely awful and relies massively on De Gea (who is a great keeper to be fair, but not as good as their fans and the media make out) . They have signed Bailly who is a good player. But Darmian has flopped thus far, they have no other good centre backs, and Shaw was no better than Rojo before his injury troubles so I can't see him charging back to his best either.

They are also now weaker up front in my opinion as Zlatan will demand gametine, and any time he is on the pitch, I'd time that Rashford is not! And that kid will be world class one day. What you do have to say though is that in Martial, Pogba and Mkhitaryan they have some serious pace and directness going forward. So they will score goals!

{Ed001's Note - seriously? Shaw was no better than Rojo? That is the most ridiculous statement you have ever made mate. Shaw was excellent, just prior to his injury, while Rojo struggled badly at left back.}

09 Aug 2016 09:53:43
Hahahaha Shaw no better than Rojo. I know you talk about watching players on YouTube MK but I didn't realise you watched all of your football on there. What a ridiculous statement.

09 Aug 2016 09:57:32
One of the rich teams with high-profile managers will crash. Has to be. Mourinho, Guardiola or Conte? My headline right now would be "Cockup for Conte".

09 Aug 2016 10:47:43
No need for that really is there smplfc. It's an opinions game and I never really rated Shaw as highly as others did. Good for his age but he was billed as the next Ashley Cole before he even played 10 games!

Ed001, i always preferred the lad Targett myself. Before his injuries Shaw was about 18/ 19 and at that age, he was about as good as Rojo is now in my opinion. So I don't see him as an immediate improvement to United's team, or a guaranteed long term improvement. He may come back and struggle like Flanagan has, or he may pick up where he left off and progress to be a good left back. That is all i was trying to say, but i couldn't be bothered to go into tgat much detail on a United player. If Shaw was our player, everyone on here would be saying we can't rely on a young player who has missed almost 2 years to injury!

It's all relative. Shaw was playing well for his age, but still struggled at times as you expect, and allow a degree of lenience for. Rojo is bang average for his age and hasn't shown any progression, but is still as good as an 18/ 19 year old with minimal experience. I have no doubt Shaw has more potential and despite him playing for United I hope he recovers well and does go on to fulfill that potential, but I think he was similar to Sterling in that he benefitted massively from being young, English, and surrounded by hype. Sterling likewise was dubbed the new John Barnes within 10 games. It is just all a bit much too early and Shaw has not proven himself to me yet. He is a talented young player. That is all in my opinion.

{Ed001's Note - Shaw was excellent and United looked a lot better with him in the side. It was when he suffered his injury that their play suffered badly. He was not an overhyped English player, he was outstanding.}

09 Aug 2016 10:51:45
There's a big if over Utd but if Mourinho can get the best out of Zlatan, help Rooney regain form and turn Pogba into world's best category then they're certainly in with a shout. Their biggest weakness is in defense but if there's a manager to shut up shop it's Mourinho. City are favorites for me but Utd could push them.

09 Aug 2016 10:22:51
would love mourinho to have another meltdown as he crashes and burns, who would he blame this time I wonder? he is nothing more than a cheque book manager who proved last year he has no idea in how to deal with a bad run of results.

09 Aug 2016 11:03:54
Ultimately i think United aspirations are pinned on a few things.

1. Zlatan, Carrick and Rooney being able to maintain their ability and not dip with age.

2. Shaw returning from injury and getting right back to where he was before, and then improving further as the season goes on. Not to mention staying fit.

3. older signings like Darmian and Schneiderlin finally hitting the heights expected of them.

Because the majority of their business this year (Pogba, Micky and Bailly in particular) cannot be knocked even be the most staunch critic. They are all top class players. Pogba is maybe even world class.

I think they will finish 3rd personally. No way are they title favourites though just because they have spent big. Mourinho is on edge as well and if anyone of the top managers is at breaking point, it is him.

09 Aug 2016 12:07:46
KK7, bit harsh on Mourinho after winning the CL with Porto. I also can't think of a manager at any major club who was successful without spending any money.

09 Aug 2016 12:08:27
I don't want to hear logic, facts or stats. I will absolutely never tip Man United for the title :) C'mon lads against the Arsenal!

And thanks Eds for top drawer work on this site.

09 Aug 2016 12:24:47
Apologies It was all meant in good humour MK. Obviously I knew that when typing it, but you weren't to know that for sure.

Not being English, I often get to laugh at how much your press ridiculously overrate your youngsters and build them in to world superstars.

Now I'm not for one moment saying Shaw is a world superstar or was before his injury. but he is one youngster that I really wish we had and believe if he can stay fit, can become very good.

09 Aug 2016 13:22:19
No worries smplfc.

09 Aug 2016 16:41:27
We should be looking a lot more than just CL Play off qualifications for next season. A no of clubs have managerial changes to incur. No midweek games to cover. Title should be our aim and let's one show some ambition.

09 Aug 2016 02:33:54
i see people speaking of geggenpressing lately, bt we haven't really been playing the pressing game last season, or atleast the one i saw from dortmund when klopp was there.

havent really seen the preseason games, seen highlights bt not much. what are peoples thoughts going into this season? with his own team would he return to that?

what of you ed001 i remember u said he hasn't really been playing the pressing game too last season, do you think he'll return to that? or will it be a modified version of his dortmund tactice?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed001's Note - he has been gradually moving away from that system and tactical outlook for a while. He wants more flexibility. While the players still need to press, he has the belief that it takes too much out of the players to go all out for the entire season.}

09 Aug 2016 06:03:23
Ed, I find Lijnders comments a while back interesting and kind of contradictory to how Klopp is supposedly making a gradual move away from gegenpress. Before the Spurs match at Anfield, he said counter pressing is basically part of the team's identity, integral to the way we play, 'not a proposal - a law', and bla bla bla. what are your thoughts on that? I still saw massive signs of gegenpressing against Barca, but you could be right in that it won't be used as much this season.

{Ed001's Note - counterpressing is not the same thing mate.}

09 Aug 2016 06:15:35
This is where I'm confused, I thought gegenpressing is just German for counterpressing? What's the difference between the two?

{Ed001's Note - well it refers to a particular system of high energy pressing in the opposition half. That is what the phrase has been coined to mean. What Klopp does now is still a variation of it, but there is less emphasis on pressing the ball under the current system. Players are still pressing, but it uses a lot less energy to just cut down the options of the player on the ball, rather than all chase round after it putting the man on the ball under pressure. Leaves less gaps in other areas of the pitch too.}

09 Aug 2016 09:40:03
From what I've seen in preseason we've played more of a 4-1-4-1 in Defence (dropping to a 4-5-1 when in the final third of the pitch), and the decision on when to press or not seems a lot more disciplined and strategic vs. when Klopp first came in.

Anytime he ball goes wide or someone is a bit unsighted/ struggles to control and the whole side clicks into gear as a unit. Barcelona was one of the best games I've seen for a while in terms of discipline and co-ordination.

Mane is also a big plus for me - has the energy required but also the pace to surprise the opposition as he's often onto them before they realise.

09 Aug 2016 14:04:18
Spot on, Ed. The geggenpressing is not what Klopp is doing and in fact, he stopped doing that last season. What we do is press the spaces on the pitch to cut out passing lanes for the player on the ball and when he`s cornered, you press from there. Vs Barca, When the GK had the ball, Mane, Coutinho, Can and Firmino cut out the spaces where he could play into midfield and when he did play it into Busquets, Can pressed him and won a throw in as Busquets mishit his pass. Also, Messi got pressed by Mane, he froze for a second and Stewart jumped in and Messi lost the ball. There were also times when we dropped off as a unit and did not press the ball, to save energy. There were many examples like these during the game. That I think, is what Klopp is doing when we press. If we can do that consistently and be more efficient in our decision-making in the final third, we will wreck team especially on the road.

{Ed002's Note - The well named kopflose huhn style of play.}

08 Aug 2016 23:01:13
Ed01. I only come to the Liverpool site, would you mind giving a short history of the eds who are on this site, who they support, how you found them, and which ones you have actually met? Reading the site a few time every day, it's almost like being part of another disfunctional family. Also, do you know if anyone with the club read and/ or comment on the site? I'm not interested on who, just whether or not they do. Thanks for everything all of you do everyday.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I don't think I could do a short history of all the eds, we have had so many different ones, some more successful than others. Of the ones I have met, Ed003, Ed007, Ed025, Ed033 and Ed091. I am sure I am probably missing one. I will add an eds history to my to do list and try and do them one by one for you. It will take a while as I will have to get Ed033 to put me a list of them together, as my memory is not good. Particularly for names.

The club have certainly had people monitoring the site in the past, leading to me being asked to do things such as not reveal team info before matches. Which is why I try and avoid finding out about fitness of players etc, other than information released by the club. If they feel it helps their cause for me not to give out that information, then I am happy to help.

Thank you mate, I do it because I love it. If I was not editing, I would be on here chatting anyway.}

09 Aug 2016 07:50:32
Ed, Edd and Eddie 😁.

09 Aug 2016 07:56:54
Yeah I'd like to read this, ed001 you come across as a top bloke . love the work you all do.

{Ed001's Note - thanks Fw, I will start work on getting through my to do list once the transfer window closes.}

09 Aug 2016 00:18:31
I know I'm not Sturridges biggest fan but I will tell you what this is not the season to have prolonged injury. If that's the case I believe he'll be left behind and probably become surplus. It's going to get tough up front you up for the fight Dan?

Believable6 Unbelievable1

09 Aug 2016 01:38:43
Ya I have a feeling this his last chance to prove him self or next season Klopp would look to bring someone . With firminho played the st role and Origi coming on like a boss . Ings knocking at the door to . Sturridge needs to stay fit.

09 Aug 2016 02:25:05
A fully fit and on form sturridge will be good news for all concerned with lfc, if not we have capable cover.

09 Aug 2016 03:10:39
I would not care if he's sold. A team like west ham should buy him they r desperate need of a high profile striker. We will survive with origi firminio and ings. I can bet u guys he won't play more than 20 games and score like 12-15 goals. But we should be looking for a 20-25 goal striker if we want to replace him.

09 Aug 2016 07:27:50
Crazy horse, if he plays 20 games and scores 12-15 goals, i'd be delighted with that contribution. There are many strikers in the league who won't manage that many playing all season.

09 Aug 2016 07:46:40
Even if fit I don't see him first choice anymore.

09 Aug 2016 08:08:29
When fully fit and with the pace we have in our team he will be lethal. i'm a fan but to be totally honest i count us to be having three strikers going into the new season being Origi, Ings and Firmino. Can't rely on sturidge

I just hope he doesn't do a van persie and goes to another club and stay fully fit for a season scoring lots of goals.

09 Aug 2016 09:57:40
I'm conflicted on this one, none of our other forwards are capable of the magic Studge is and he will always score goals for us. Having said that he doesn't combine brilliantly with our other players. Origi on the other hand looks like he's on the verge of becoming a complete striker with pace, power and a solid all round game.

I think Studge as first choice will score more goals than Origi as first choice but the team looks more cohesive with Origi in it. It's a difficult one but I'd still go with Studge, ultimately he's a better player and cohesion can be taught, talent can't.

09 Aug 2016 11:05:57
Sturridge is our best striker easily. Origi is looking better and better but Danny's is the supreme out of our four options. His injury record should be the ONLY concern imo as on his day he is world-class.

09 Aug 2016 14:04:03
Agree with you there Muscat, Sturridge is lethal and an outstanding striker, but I can't help but think Firmino, Mane, Coutinho, Llalana are all a bit more effective with Origi on the pitch. I think he's better at the hold up play and stays in the box more yet somehow also manages to create chances for others. Only thing Origi still needs to convince on is that his finishing can remain as clinical as it has been in last 3-4 months over a long period of time and I think he may step up to first choice.

I'd still like to see Sturridge and Origi together with Firmino in behind.
