Don't care how he left the club Macherano is world class as a defensive midfielder he is class

He has been class. But so has Suarez.

Agree0 Disagree0

100% agree on this one, Holland literally couldn't get past him. I think a lot of people have held a grudge over the way he departed and as a result have forgotten his talents which were truly highlighted this evening.

Nice to see him & Kuyt getting along so well too.

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't care if he's a good player.

The man has no class.

Agree0 Disagree0

HX Red, he's a thug and he left in a bad way. I remember that and I don't like him. That has nothing to do with judging him as a player though, not for me anyway. He is still a fantastic defensive mid and he was MOTM tonight for sure. Still wouldn't take him back though.

Agree0 Disagree0

Wouldn't have him back sorry.
He is really decent though and even world class on a good day I will give him that.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree it wasn't right pity though we never replaced him sign up Medel

Anyone think rogers should(or might) wait to see how Ibe performs in pre season before going and buying another striker/wide forward to replace suarez?

For me Ibe has all the attributes, he has a physical presence, he's quick and skillful. I'd personally like to see him thrown in at the deep end.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why? So we can destroy his confidence when he inevitably suffers? Give him a bit of a run in preseason to see where he's at, a role in the early cup games, and a few substitute appearances.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree he is class. He'll be handled like Sterling was but a bit more relaxed because we have more options than we did back then.

I hope a few more youngsters are allowed to step up too. Which they should. Exciting times

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree he needs to be brought up with Sterling,

For me Ibe has got the potential to be great for us and he was ripping up the reserves not last season the one before when he first broke in to the 1st team - I definitely wouldn't loan him out this season and would like to see him coming off the bench in games quite often

With his lightning pace he's bound to make impacts on tired defenders, If the inevitable happens I would like to see 3 behind sturridge inc Sterling/Ibe - Coutinho / Lallana and Markovic - Real good options to have

Agree0 Disagree0

And Lambert

Read an interesting comment from Matic on the Liverpool echo site regarding markovic

Markovic’s former Benfica team-mate Nemanja Matic, who made the switch to Chelsea back in January, added: “What can I say about Markovic? It was excellent playing with this kid for six months.

“He has such massive potential that if he changed his attitude in training he could be one of Europe’s best players in his position.

“But he’s young, he’ll mature, and then nobody will be able to stop him.”

You'd wonder what his attitude in training is like for Matic to come out and say that?

Is it the Argentinian Rojo that we were interested in for full back, looks handy, thoughts lads and lassies?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

09 Jul 2014 23:36:18
It's really quite difficult to tell. I've been floating in and out of sleep for this entire 120 minutes. Good news is the "master tactician" can't get very far with draws in the EPL.

Agree0 Disagree0

That's him, looks a good player in my opinion, much better defensively than most other attacking full backs but unfortunately it seems as though we might be going for Bertrand instead.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't rate Rojo at all mate, hope it ain't true

If I may make my 1st post on the subject of losing Luis? Or more importantly, what we have left to field without him? Now I was wrong about how good Sturridge is. but I can't help but worry about how we will cope without him when he is injured or when he has one of those too frequent games where he just isn't at his best. Unlike Luis(good riddance to the flawed genius) who doesn't get those niggly injuries, or still occupies defenders when not at his best. I can't help but think that as the focal point of the attack and the subsequent attention that was reserved for Luis. our Dan might not be the man? Or am I just trying to justify my initial impressions of Dan?!
I do like the addition of Lambert as an option. I would have much preferred him coming off the bench in that Chelsea game instead of Aspas. but would I swap better off the bench for a weaker 11?. no I wouldn't. so come on Mr Rogers. don't nullify last years strength. give those talented kids a chance in midfield and get me a forward that will allow others to flourish as Luis did!
But whatever happens, try to remember that we are supporters and our job is to support.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

09 Jul 2014 23:26:20
I expect us to Bring another Wide Forward apart from Markovic, Certainly Origi is going back for a loan.
Lets Hope its a spl addition.

09 Jul 2014 22:01:50
I point blank refuse to believe there won't be a world class player coming in after selling Luis. I don't think It 'must' be a striker either. It 'should' be a player who plays in the positions we are weakest. When we won't the champions league in 05 we never had a goal scorer,,, but world class midfielders and 1 or 2 at the back. The squad is good, and the players coming in are obviously going to improve the options,, but we're being linked with players and not sorted out the 'priority' positions where we was weak last season and we all know a CB and a LB needs to be bought. I'm surprised the club didn't line these players up months ago and it just seems we're spending all this money on players we don't need. Rojo Lovren and Walcott for me. Markovic Huntelaar Origi I don't get it?

Wilfred bony any interest in him? and if so how much does Swansea want us to pay?

Thanks Love the site

A lot of people saying lovren isn't worth 20 million.
How much should Liverpool, a team looking for a centre back, pay for a 24 year old with premier league and champions league experience and who was one of the best defenders in the league last year?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He looks a class act. I have to say he ticks all the boxes, international, experience at the highest level, can handle the pace of the premier league and wants to play for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

2nd best centre-back in the PL last season behind Kompany. Worth every penny in my book.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 23:31:33
Gary Cahil?
John Terry?

Harry it's easy to defend when Chelsea sit their back 6 on the edge of their own box and play for 1-0 wins/a draw.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 21:13:37
I've heard Brendan Rogers has turned his attention to experienced full back Dirk Kuyt. Joking aside its great seeing him still playing at this level! Wether he's up front, left mid. In goal, you know what your going get!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's better than Johnson as right back lol

Agree0 Disagree0

Great player. Every team should have a Dirk Kuyt.

Agree0 Disagree0

Love Dirk Kuyt, such a hard working team player and never let's you down. Deserves a winners medal for his performances.

Agree0 Disagree0

Have to agree Muller, it's a joy to see him still on the worlds biggest stage

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry hard working he is - but he lacks quality or slows the play down as he doesn't or can't see a pass/cross - don't get me wrong he was good for Liverpool but unfortunately he is limited as a player.

Hence why he was moved on - lacks pace in the positions he is played as well.

Who remembers his 1st touch resulting in him having to make a tackle for the next ball?

Can't fault his commitment but never an out an out Liverpool legend IMO.

Agree0 Disagree0

I loved his hat trick against the Mancs

I have a question for you.
Martins Indi?. Looks some player. And seems we are ready to splash some money on a CB. Y not him then?

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 20:57:46
Ed001. A double barrel question for you. Holtby, I really like the guys style, reminds me of a consistent coutinho. I'd imagine the fella could play anywhere across the front as well as CAM and either side of the diamond, could be useful. Spent the season on loan at Fulham for some reason. So, do you like the player? And do you see us making a move for him, or have we had him watched this season at all?
Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - works hard but lacks in quality. Bit of a headless chicken in my opinion.}

Seriously? Coutinho is ten times better than Holtby.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 21:14:21
Oo bit harsh. Maybe he's like a headless chicken because he hasn't been given a purpose, a role per say. His career was pretty much put on hold for a season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Have to admit I was a Lewis Holtby fan before he went to Spurs, how did he get on at Fulham on loan?

Agree0 Disagree0

Didn't Felix Magath say something along the lines of there being no point in having a player like him for a relegation battle because he had no fight?

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 20:22:09
I don't think with Suarez imminent departure, what we"ll be missing is his goals or asists, because even if rest of the squad combine to give half of his goals and assists, we'd be standing in a good position.

What we'll be missing on is his tireless work rate, which at times had rubbed on to other Liverpool players the right way.

Second of all' how about using sterling as a second striker (Would love if Ed001 can give an opinion on this), he has goals and assists in him, can dribble and is quick enough to drag couple of defenders with him and create space for other players to exploit.

Sterling is a player i'd like to see starting in every game owing to the versatility he provides with being able to play as a second striker, a winger or at right back if required, He'll also allow Brendan to change his formations and tactics if required in a game.

Fellow Reds Inputs is much appreciated.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I like Sterling playing with freedom, I think that suits him. For me, I think he is better coming from deeper positions and running at defenders, rather than being further forward. While he is a lot stronger than he looks, he is not going to out muscle some of the brutes at the back in a Prem team, so I don't want him fighting with them to get the ball. I want him picking it up and attacking them with it, which is when he is at his best.}

I'm with the Ed. I also think he's vital when it comes to defending. Giving his size he really surprised me in that department and he will only get better. The kid has the potential to be up there with the best

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 20:06:14
Edd001 I was just thinkinhg earlier of kelly, texeira, mc laughlin, suso, ibe etc all quality youngsters not getting any sort of decent game time. You touched upon if we are buying multiple players in positions which we are what opportunities are youngsters getting and your spot on'
If origi is bought for ten million and loaned back then why is a young striker not given a.chance( and Lambert(32)? Left back, we look like betrand yet McLaughlin IMO could turn out a beer bet.
What message does this send to the youngsters.because it looks as though few, a very few will be given any sort of opportunity to grasp first team football? We needed 3 top players an attacker, CB and LB and should be looking to youth IMO
Edd001 what's your opinion?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - I would rather we limited ourselves now, just to really top quality signings, we have added numbers, we don't need to just add bodies. If the player isn't a first team player, then save the money and put it towards staying within FFP. Fill the bench from the academy players, if injuries hit, that way they get a chance.}

Edd couldn't agree more.
3-4 top signings would have been enough for me if in the right areas. But it.looks as if bar lallana and lovren( possibly) its.looking like numbers

Agree0 Disagree0

I couldn't agree more. Why fill our bench with transient internationals on good wages who offer little more than an eager youngster with something to prove. not forgetting the lesser salary! I recall a team near us who filled there numerous trophy winning teams with academy players and then sold them to Sunderland for millions!
Who would really prefer Aspas to Texiera? Ibe? Suso?

Agree0 Disagree0

Maybe because these transient players have had a great season with their own club, or have shown for an international team in the biggest competition in the world.

Agree0 Disagree0

We have a lot of games and quite a few players leaving so I think it's needed, I'm beyond the stage of doubting what Rodgers can do. There's been a few bad signings but look what he done last year when, it's safe to say, most of last season our bench was worrying. Hopefully he's learned from those mistakes when it comes to signings and when it comes to giving the youth a run, he hasn't disappointed yet.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with that, Lovren plus a really good LB and Markovic or someone else if that falls through. No point in going for someone like Bertrand for LB or Huntelaar for backup.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thats exactly what i'm saying ed! I think the majority of fans feel the same, top quality or just save the money

Any thoughts Ed thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - thoughts are that it would help if you mentioned what you were talking about!}

If you did that deliberately (not mentioning a players name) then that was a genius post as I'd say there are hundreds of guys reading this and freaking out wondering who you are talking about.

Hi Eds,

Just a quick one - have you heard why we are unable to convince Sanchez to come to Liverpool? Is it as simple as his mrs wanting to live in London? Or is it something more worrying eg he thinks Arsenal will challenge more consistently over the coming years than we will?

Cheers

Agree0 Disagree0

But do players REALLY have to live in close proximity to the ground?
Surely it isn't necessary when you are on 100k per week. Just hire a plane or helicopter if you need to travel long distance. London to Liverpool, it's not exactly difficult to commute.

Hey Eds, I saw something here the other day about us looking to move Enrique on,
I don't really understand this, we still have to replace Cissokho, and given we are not looking at right full backs, I would imagine Flanno will cover for Johnson.
Even if we do get a left back in this window, that'll still leave us 1 LB short of where we started last season.
Is Wisdom seem as Johnson's backup? With Flanno covering our potential new left back?

Personally I see starting this season with a new LB, Johnson and Flanno as suicide.

As inconsistent as Enrique is, I would defo keep him in the squad, at least for this season.

I know it's all speculation at this point, but if the Eds or any posters can shed some light on this, it would be appriciated!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Two words; Brad Smith

Agree0 Disagree0

Flannagan, Brad Smith, Glen Johnson, Emre Can. That's 4 who can provide backup to our new LB if we get one and we can definitely sell Enrique.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jul 2014 10:47:55
Smith doesn't even have a senior apperance,
Plus we can hardly account for our right full backs, we only have two of them, we need one to play and what if ones injured?

I'm all for giving the kids a chance, and of Smith is ready excellent, that'll save us a few bob, but if he was expected to come in as 2nd choice left back this season, do you not think he would have played a little more?

Flanagan was our only decent full back last year, with Enrique injured and Johnson and Cissokho out of form,

Goes without saying, but I very much think that selling Enrique this summer would be a huge mistake.

New LB with Enrique as back up, and GJ and JF on the right.

That's how I feel we should do it!

Hello, as good as Tello could be, he has barely had a decent run to warrant a comparison with Lallana.

Also, there many variables to consider when going after a player, and I would rather go with what the coach with the scouts see in player than a few fancy glimpses on YouTube.

Need some help her. Read the Lovren plays on left side, same side as Shako. So those this mean that he is competition for Shako not partnering him?!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lovren is right footed.

Agree0 Disagree0

He is right foote though so could make the switch with ease you'd hope

Agree0 Disagree0

He can play both sides, he played mostly at LCB for Lyon though.

Agree0 Disagree0

He is one of few centre backs comfortable on both sides. It's one of the things that makes him so impressive. The only player in our squad capable of doing it is Toure.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 18:30:04
Lovren can play left side or right side comfortably and hence he will be comfortable with Skrtel or Sakho. This means that we don't have to worry about a CB not being happy playing a particular side next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ake
Lovren is comfortable with both feet but is right footed.
If we sign him I can see him playing alongside Sakho/Agger
He is a quality centre back that will improve or defence.

Agree0 Disagree0

He can also play as a fullback. Think he's pretty well comfortable anywhere in the back 4, although obviously CB is the primary.

Hi ed001, Ed002

So far happy with our activity this window, Lallana and Can both good players for the midfield and Lambert (assuming a replacement for Aspas) a good signing

I know there is multiple posts saying we would still like to add a LB (which is needed) and possible deals for Markovic, Origi and Lovren

My question is are any of these players seen as a replacement for Suarez? Or once the transfer with Barcelona goes through do you expect to see LFC push for another player to replace him?

Like I said happy with our business and would be even happier if we get the other 3 mentioned but personally see out business so far as preparing for champions league and a replacement for Suarez still needed

Thanks for any reply

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - there is no like for like replacement, this question has been asked a thousand times now.}

If we use Wisdom or Flano at RB then we don't need another CB unless we sell any of ours.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed001, just your views as a fellow fan, last season we were short of numbers in my opinion, if we were to lose Agger, Assaidi, Lucas and Suarez as well as Aspas and maybe Borini will we not be a be light on numbers still? Although I am happy with all of the signings so far and I am excited to see Markovic and Can as much as Lallana

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I don't think we were that short of numbers, it was more a case of not having the right options to back up the first choice players, imo. We had no one to replace Hendo, but now we have Can.

So it is only Suarez that will be missed, but he missed plenty of games and we coped in the past. Some games having him was a handicap, as he would waste a ridiculous amount of chances in some games. Others he was undoubtedly the difference, but not enough for losing him to worry me at all.

Agger was in poor form last season and didn't play much, I don't think his loss, much as I love him, will present that much of an issue. Assaidi was out on loan and had no end product for us anyway, I really don't see how he is even worthy of mentioning in this respect. How can we be short because we are losing a player that wasn't at the club last season?

Lucas will be a blow, his attitude is an example to the youngsters and he, imo offers more than Allen, if he gets back to his best. Really, what we should be doing, is seeing this as an opportunity for some of the bright sparks from the academy to get a run of games. If we have every position covered by multiple players, when do they get a chance?}

Ed can I get your opinion on the subject.
We know there is no like for like replacement for Suarez, and it looks like we will switch to a 4-3-3 next season, with Sturridge leading the attack and pacey, tricky wide men supporting him i.e. Lallana, Sterling, Markovic.

However, if Sturridge gets injured, and based on last season that is likely, especially with more games, do you think we have enough quality to cover that?
I know we have bought Lambert, but he is to replace Aspas who was a bit part player last season, and I don't think he is good enough to carry the attack on his own (as much as I like him and am happy with the signing).
Then we have Borini who, providing he stays, doesn't fill me with confidence as a focal point to our attacking play.

There has been talk of Huntelaar but I don't rate him, and don't think he is an improvement on the other back up strikers.

Do you think we can cope with the current strikers we have providing Suarez leaves?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Lambert wouldn't be leading the attack on his own. This is the problem with people obsessing about super star players, they forget it is a team game! If Sturridge gets injured, it still leaves Lallana, Sterling, Lambert etc. It doesn't mean Lambert is suddenly going to be on his own up front with 9 defenders and a keeper for company, so why the panic?}

Yeah I agree in terms of Lucas offering more than Allen especially if one of them was to come in for Gerrard. Sturridge for me will score more than ever with the new forward options however I feel we could still do with one more striking option just if Sturridge got a big injury. I am a big fan of Lambert but still I am unsure whether he is Liverpool quality, his goal ratio for Southampton would probably say he is though. Hopefully with a sturdier defence we won't need to be scoring 5 a game just 1 or 2 will be fine

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't want a 'super star player', far from it. My most hated phrase on this page is "marquee signing".

I meant I am worried we would miss more of an out and out goal scorer if Sturridge is injured.
A striker who will stay up the pitch and guarantee you goals in nealry every game.

In an ideal world the goals would be spread across the team, especially the forward 3.
I just hope the midfield chip in with a few more this season to cover the loss of Suarez.

Lots of posters seem concerned with loopy Lou going and how we will replace him. I find this very shortsighted and I for one am more concerned about replacing the legend that is stevie G. Guns for hire will come and go but to find a sheriff to stay the long term and put heart and soul into our beloved club will be much harder. Can't wait for the new season to start as long as we don't see that 3rd strip too much! Come on the boys let's spank em good this season. YNWA

Edd002 with the debts topic obviously without going into numbers. I would like to know mate if you wish to comment, why there is no contraints on the amount of transfers in or amount spent. We have spent a lot of money 70plus million( not exact), the suarez deal should reduce that amount greatly but is there now more.emphasis on sales now before buys? I just feel we are spending certain amounts on players that might not make any great improvement like some transfer last year. We could potentially buy 8 players this window which is alot. what's your opinion edd, not on figures but on how you think we should working in the transfer market, e.g sales before buys? Cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - The club are looking to improve the squad, purchases have been made and there will be more.}

They improve the bench but not the starting 11 which is unacceptable

Agree0 Disagree0

Let's spell it out Maradona.

Last season

Mignolet; Johnson, Skrtel, Sakho, Flanagan; Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho; Sterling, Sturridge, Suarez
Subs: Jones, Toure/Agger, Cissokho, Allen/Lucas, Aspas, Alberto, Moses

Next season (possibly)

Mignolet; Johnson, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno; Gerrard, Henderson, Lallana; Sterling, Sturridge, Markovich
Subs: Jones, Flanagan, Skrtel, Can, Allen, Coutinho, Lambert

Suarez was always going to go but we have strengthened our weak areas and replaced Suarez with a combination of attackers - some experienced, some not. The bench is certainly much stronger and we will see whether the better players in the starting XI make up for LS departure. But don't forget this was a squad that finished 2nd.

Reading this page for a while now, I think most people worry too much.

I seems that when they try to predict the consequenses of not having Suarez around, they look at things in a historical view, forgetting that all players will develop into a new season. Some get better and some get worse.

As far as I can see, we have more players than our opponents, who presumably will get better i.a. they are pretty young.

And, just as important, we have a style of play and a team that glues well together.

Looking at the world cup there is very little difference between the absolute top class players and the next in line. It is more a question of being well organized as a team, which we are.

So cheer up everybody - we will be just fine.

Sanchez £150k a week, no resale value at £30 mill coming from a cash cow. I would suspect and it wouldn't surprise me, if it transpires we were never in for him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lallana being a year older and costing 26million and on a five year contract would also have no resale value either.

Which top class player did you expect to arrive at Liverpool when we had finished 6th, 7th and 8th and out of CL for years? How did spending 40m on Ozil work out for Arsenal? They didn't really improve did they? Had they spent it on another striker and a midfielder they could have won the league because they only had Giroud and got loads of injuries. But because neither you, me or Arsene Wenger can see into the future he lives with his decision. After timers always have all the answers. After the event of course.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm just getting a little concerned, early in the window granted but now with Eds mentioning not having buckets of money to spend. God knows how if we are one of the top marketable clubs in the world, 2nd place, TV money, CL football and £70m coming in in sales from one player. but hey we've spent up already??

Suarez scored 31, won free kicks, penalties and assisted in goals directly aside from winning corners we scored from

We will not replace that. We can hope to get close to 50% of his contribution through untried Markovic and midtable players like Lallana and Lambert. The only way to help towards those points is to tighten defence.

We are not signing any? Lovren and Blind need to come in and if Agger goes, replace him too.
But it sounds like the money has gone towards forward players. The other three clubs who finished in the top four are buying top level players and non have sold their top player

Trust BR, I do. We finished 2nd, he knows what he's doing. He did, with Suarez not without him.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm after noticing your name, that's quite a lot of posts from you that I don't agree with.

Money - you haven't a clue. £70m is nonsense. Losses the last 3 years and we've already bought a lot of players.

Lovren and Blind. Lovren we've clearly tried to sign and £20m turned down so the club has done everything it can to get him. We still could. Blind - I agree we should go get a top left back. You make it sound like we haven't tried but we nearly signed Moreno. Yes I know we haven't but there's plenty of time left.

Agger - we replaced him last year, you must have missed all the games with him on the bench for Sakho. We are also looking at bringing in Lovren, as you know yourself, and we have Ilori returning from loan. For me, if we get Lovren we can afford to lose both Skrtel and Agger. We have loads of centre backs.

The last comment about Rodgers not knowing what he is doing without Suarez is complete and utter drivel.

You should be embarrassed by your post.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 14:15:27
Blind does not "need to come in" at all.

He was average all season, he's had a hakf decent WC that's all. I hope we give more thought to our signings than that.

Agree0 Disagree0

Chelsea have just spent money to get weaker. Costa is no better than Torres and Fabregas is worse than Oscar.
United have overpaid for every player so far, but admittedly look to be getting stronger. City will be half the team next season without Toure.
Wenger yet again is refusing to address his teams main priorities. They didn't need any more attackers. They need holding midfielders and defenders.
We will probably not be stronger, but Lallana, Lambert, Can, Markovic, Lovren and Bertrand will see to it we are just as strong. I've not been overwhelmed by any signings yet apart from Lallana and Tadic. They are the two best signings of the summer so far in my opinion.

I don't get why nobody rates Lallana, if he had gone to United you'd all be screaming about how he is world class (which in my opinion he is) but no. He is average/mid table because we signed him. I'm seriously considering a break from this site because I can't take all these depressing posts from the hero worshippers.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sounds like you're more than a little concerned, but I wouldn't worry; money is not the main issue we have in getting in the players we want. Takes willingness to do business on all sides, so I doubt Suarez is what is holding up any potential transfers -- they will happen w/ or without him, but without him, we may have funds to snag an additional wide forward/striker or simply invest more in other areas of the team (which I think is more likely).

As for Markovic, I think he will surprise you guys. I posted something from a mirror article yesterday, where they quoted Avram Grant as saying besides Ronaldo and Messi, Markovic at 19 is the best he's ever seen. While his expertise is somewhat questionable, I doubt he was being facetious in any way.

Yes, top four clubs always buy players. I'd take Lallana over Fabregas every single day of the week and it has nothing to do with him being English. His game is entirely different. I'd also take Lambert over Costa (though the difference in quality is steep, the return on investment has to be much, much better).

For me, we need a wide forward (Markovic), a left back (Moreno), a center back (Lovren) and another striker (Origi). Anything after that would have to be a class player to even get in the side, unless we're getting rid of Agger/Lucas/Borini.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree with Ems here again. we seem to have fans who just want names and not players. fabregas will not be good at Chelsea and lalanna will have a much better season. look at all the World class players who we've missed out on recently such as mikky and blind this season Who have done nothing of note throughout the season and yet a player like lallanna who was in the team of the year and had an incredible season is considered average I don't get it?

Man city just signed a goalkeeper no top sides were interested in but I don't hear their fans moaning about how crap he is?

Agree0 Disagree0

Costa is no better than Torres? You think Costa will only score a handful of goals each season in the PL? i'm glad Liverpool never got him then. :-/

Agree0 Disagree0

Seriously? What has Lallana ever done to suggest he is world class? This is nonsense.

Agree0 Disagree0

Worldclass is a term that is well overused. There are only two players in world football I deem worldclass, messi and ronaldo.
Lallana is top class ;)

Agree0 Disagree0

Lalanna has shown consistently over the last couple years in the prem and a few more years before that he consistently performs at a high level and also has loyalty.

I'm not saying he's better than Sanchez because he's not but how would you quantify world class? Is Sanchez world class and if so how?

Agree0 Disagree0

Big Al
I agree! I also hope Lallana is top class for us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not embarrassed at all. Valid point about not replacing Suarezs contribution. And we haven't signed any defenders, which we needed above all.

We were title challengers, now have CL football. We have addressed the leaking goals issue. Sold our best player and the incoming are not world class.
Chelsea Utd Arsenal are signing title winners n finished articles. It's great to buy promising talent but they and we need quality for them to play with.
I was surprised to see no one else move for any of our signings, including their exmanagers.

As I said. The noise seems to be our money is running out. Still no top class defenders. Also looks like the £70m is under £60m for Suarez, but then Ayre has been in negotiations.

Agree0 Disagree0

At Atletico it was built around Costa. Koke, Turan, Villa etc all served to make him look better. Chelsea have a habit of making strikers look worse with their negative play. Costa offered nothing to the Spanish National side and half of his 30 goals were penalties which skewed his stats. He is not creative enough for his team mates and is either going to lose the ball or shoot. I think in the right System he can guarantee you goals. Chelsea isn't right for him though and yes, I think he will struggle to make double figures next season like Soldado, Aspas, Morientes etc did when they moved here. Defences are tougher, more organised and better in overall quality in the Premier league. He will take at least a year to acclimatise and Chelsea will lilely only give him a year before he is replaced. Torres would do better up top in my opinion than Costa and Chelsea have missed a trick not going for Balotelli who suits them to a tee and is Prem proven.

Lol AG that did make me chuckle ;) I have facebook and get into all kinds of debates on there. I trust that you are all sane!

I perhaps shouldn't jump on the world class bandwagon as you're right. Wprld class means "would walk into any team on earth" so arguably only Neuer, Lahm, Silva, Ramos, Alba, Alonso, Iniesta, Kroos, Messi, Suarez and Ronaldo can claim that accolade as they are the best players on earth.

But Lallana is as good as the likes of Silva, Hazard, Mata etc. Like a previous poster said, he is top class, but he is far from average!

Agree0 Disagree0

Crunch
Do you know Ayre personally that you can label him a poor negotiator? Or, as I would guess, like numerour other posters that talk out of their backside regarding transfer policies and how they work?

Agree0 Disagree0

Comparing our transfers to the likes of Chelsea, City, and United is always likely to end in tears.

Two of them have ridiculous money, players who are not super important they can move on for a lot of cash, and a fair amount of recent success.

United makes something like £100M a year more than us and, last season aside, have a pretty good track record.

Arsenal are a better comparison point, but they have consistency which at the moment we are lacking.

We're just back in the CL, it'll take time before we can consistently attract players at the 'world class' level and even when we can I'm not convinced we will as it's simply not the Liverpool way. When was the last time we signed an actual marquee/big name? Torres maybe? But even he was relatively unproven and more of a hot prospect.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Stevie maybe you should follow Suarez and start supporting Barcelona now, embarrassing post mate. I really don't see how we are making a massive step backwards but please explain it to me?

Suarez is a top notch player but please don't call him the worlds best. I love to watch the guy play he is brilliant but if you are unavailable for your team for months at a time due to your own constant, and repeated, stupidity then you cannot realistically be considered the worlds best surely?

We have not replaced Suarez with Lambert and Lallana either that's pretty obvious as these 2 players cannot fill the one spot left in our team by Suarez unless the F.A. allow us to start fielding 12 players. We are not replacing him we are improving the team. Last year fans here were asking for cover at DM a LB and a CB.

We have signed a promising youngster in Can to fill the DM role and are actively pursuing targets for the other two positions I mentioned. Add to this the signings of Lallana, Lambert and possibly Markovic and surely you can see that the squad as a whole has improved from what we had last year. Take this starting x1 plus 7 subs from last year and compare it to what could potentially be seen next year.
Last Year: Mig, Johnson, Skrtel, Sakho, Flanno, Gerrard, Hendo, Coutinho, Sterling, Suarez, Sturridge. SUBS: Jones, Agger, Toure Cissokho, Allen, Aspas, Moses,
This Year(?): Mig, Johnson, Lovren, Sakho, Flan/Moreno/Bertrand, Gerrard, Hendo, Lallana, Sterling, Sturridge, Markovic/Coutinho
SUBS: Reina, Skrtel/Agger, Illori, Can, Allen, Borini, Lambert

Clearly this looks like our squad is progressing rather than going backwards. Time to wake up Stevie.

Apologies for long post

Profitable, financially stable clubs with a recent track record of success can go for world class players. We are none of that and if Sanchez has taught us nothing else is that the draw of Liverpool isn't what it was. We have no choice but to look for the next star. Whether you like it or not that's how it is.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 19:38:56
For a start jack your putting in players that haven't even signed in your team for next year, just as you probably did with salah and Willian last year, Suarez is the only player on the earth that is consistently brilliant (I.e still provides for the team on a bad day, through work ethic) fair point about him being banned for 4 months (12ish games), but did he not miss a chunk last season and still smash the goal scoring chart and assist chart and won every individual accolade domestically he could, so think your post is abit embarrassing to be honest, people say it's embarrassing but it's just looking at football outside Liverpool, lallana is no better that decent, lambert a back up, and can unproven in any league let alone prem (before you say it one good season isn't proven jack) and the rest markovic (good prospect) origi (nothing special decent World Cup) are not signed so you can't bang on about them, so to be disrespectful about my post is a bit naive jack.

Agree0 Disagree0

When was this golden age when we attracted world class stars? Souness, Hansen, Alonso, Hyypia etc have all been great servants and among our best ever in their positions. None were major stars when they arrived. Even Torres & Suarez were in the group of players highly regarded but not ready-made for the elite clubs. Seems to me younger fans especially just don't get it. We've always polished rough diamonds, made solid players into much better team players and developed our own stars. And that's how me and many others like it. Why can't people ever see something special while it's being built? I saw loads of wish lists over the summer containing names that would cost 30-40m taking the place of Henderson & Sterling! I couldn't believe it. Those are two players who have been polished and contributed hugely to our best finish in years. Our best football for 25 years. I grew up with Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish etc and the continual success. This is the best manager and the best team we've had IMO since the Barnes & Beardsley era. That's why I post positively - although I'm not blind to our faults and weaknesses. I think we may struggle for top 4 this season but this team can certainly be champions in next 2/3 years.

Numerically speaking if we were to negate all of Luis suarez's goals last season we would be on 68 points just one points behind spurs. And if we were to negate all his goals as well as assists we would be on 7th position with 57 points 1 more than southampton and 7 less than manchester united.

On the other hand if we were to negate all of Daniel Sturridge's goals the we would be level on points with manchester united with 64 points. And if we were to negate all his goals as well as assists we would be on 7th position with 57 points 1 more than southampton and 7 less than manchester united.

So if we are getting more than 70 million for a player who is not happy, who will miss almost quarter of the season and STATICALLY second best in terms of points won for the team then I think its time to make our peace and look for the future.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Exactly and obviously another player would be there instead of Suarez to provide goals and assists. and the overall 11 would also be improved with signings of lalanna and loveren. assuming markovic is a "Suarez replacement"

I was just going through the same maths as I always felt that Suarez used to be hit and miss in the big games and when games were tight - so a lot of his 31 goals were scored when the game was already won - if he had spread those goals around when we needed them in tight games, we would have walked the league and he would now be more difficult to replace (but not as difficult to replace if we kept him and he fell accidently into somebody's shoulder again, and we ended up with a worthless asset).

Agree0 Disagree0

What a crock. The amount of games Suarez had 2/3 players around him creating space for others. His assists giving belief to others when he could have scored and passed instead. His fight his determination to battle even when losing. His influence on every game he played last season couldn't be replaced by any amount of money or mediocre signings

Come on people, stop trying to convince we will be better off without Suarez, no-one could possibly know that as yet, by quoting statistics only time will tell but don't take away his contribution both in results and his play which at times was unbelievable.
Dont get me wrong, I too think its time he went but what a player (headcase as well). I've read statistically this statistically that, we will be better balanced, we will retain the ball better etc etc, the truth is he helped us to our best position in years, with some truly wonderful displays.
If him going is going to make us better or better balanced, concede less goals (OBVIOUSLEY HOPE IT DOES) we should p*ss the league by Christmas.
I am just glad I got to see him play for us, he did make me smile and shout a lot but ultimately he did let us all down and I do feel bitter but I can't forget how good he was to watch.

Sean,

It isn't nonsense - it is a way of putting Suarez's goal contribution into perspective, and shows that, whilst his 31 goals will be missed, those goals weren't as valuable as everybody makes out.

Dan's goals were just as valuable to the team last year, if not more so (especially when the Dracula was serving his last ban!).

Statistically or not, that is all nonsense. Because:

1. by OP's logic, we would have played with 10 players for 33 of the 38 games last season.

2. If above applied, then the opposition would have definitely scored more than us and we would still have scored less than even without Suarez.

3. The above did happen, someone else would replace Suarez in the team and there is no way of knowing how that person replacing Suarez in the team would have been Aspas, Allen or Kelly. And if a an educated guess can be made on who replaces Suarez, then you would expect that player to score IN PLACE of Suarez at least a couple of time.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 14:48:12
4. Suarez contribution cannot be looked into and built up into statistics based on a game by game basis abstractly either.

Agree0 Disagree0

@Mickey Bee - so we would have played those matches without Suarez with nobody else coming in to take his place in the team is it? Play with 10 men? Would we not have conceded more goals with 10 men? Or maybe somebody else would have come in and played a stormer and they could have scored some goals to win us some matches we drew or lost? If Suarez didn't score in the game and we lost can we replace him in those games too for these "statistics"? I think his replacement could have won us these matches. Or sorry are we playing with 10 men?

I have the same questions for Sturridge then instead of Suarez. Also just to clarify the logic I have used is the same as yours, nonsense.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 15:09:59
But, I agree that we all don't have to fret about the loss of Suarez and should be excited about next season with CL.

IMO, this has so far been an excellent window for incoming players and based on what we hear, I think this will be the best window we have had as a club since 2007/08 summer.

Agree0 Disagree0

5. Suarez was banned. If they both played the same amount of games, with the same ten players around them, in the same weather, etc. I think you get the point i'm making here. Or maybe I am being silly and don't understand variables.

Agree0 Disagree0

There just seems to be a divide on this site at the moment of people who are saying we won't cope and the people who say we will.

Anytime someone says we will cope however the people who say we won't are just saying we don't appreciate Suarez and are mad.

No one is saying Suarez is a bad player (at least I hope not) but we are looking for positives instead of being negative and there is a lot of evidence to say that we will cope without Suarez. that is the only point trying to be made here.

Why would we want to go into a season thinking we're dead and burried before a ball has been kicked? The beauty of football is about the support and probably a bit of blissful ignorance at times.

So I would much rather spend my time appreciating the new signings and dreaming of us sticking 5 past Southampton rather than spend it worrying about how we will cope without a man who has no class and has shown no respect to our football club!

Agree0 Disagree0

Well said Shane. Worrying about something before it happens especially when you have no control over it is crazy. Mankind didn't get to where we are today by fretting about going out of the cave in case they got ate.

hi.
all this talk of lucas leiva going to italy and some others also really annoys me.
they refuse to pay market values or close to it they just wind down players ages and contracts on loans.
then they ask to much for players going out.
they then spend quite big on continental players .
as a Liverpool fan of many years I wish lfc do not enter into these loan deals .

Believable0 Unbelievable0

09 Jul 2014 13:03:28
Mal I think we should get our own house in order before we start pointing fingers at clubs for attempting to get players cheaper than market value, we are the masters of it so can't really moan when clubs try it with us can we? Every club will always try to get the best deals for themselves

Agree0 Disagree0

But we're not the Masters of it. We've only started this strategy 2 seasons ago and before that we we're getting screwed by every other team. And mal is right to worry about HIS club, after all it is HIS club. Should he care about any other club?

Agree0 Disagree0

We pay market value for players, but we (usually) buy them when their market value is reasonable. 20 million on a 20 year old that's very likely to be a force in Europe for 10-12 years or more is not at all bad business. Even if its 25 million.

However, we're not afraid to pay over the value for players we really want -- see Willian, Mkhitaryan, even Kono during January. The unfortunate truth is that even worldwide powerhouse clubs have trouble getting the players they desire when the team isn't performing well as a whole, and one season does not guarantee an additional challenge.

All that said, we will challenge again. What I do think we are becoming masters at, is defining what type of talent fits Rodgers system, what our needs are, and then finding the exact player that fixes that problem.

What were we poor at in the final 5 games of the season? Ball retention in midfield, crossing in the final third and defensive organization on set pieces and late in games. Thus, we need: Markovic (wingplay), Lallana (great when it comes to navigating center midfield, plus works well on the wing), Lambert (big target man/clinical), Can (retention/workrate). After that, all I can see is a LB CB tandem and we're set.

Just want to state a few things from my opinion, not that it counts or anything haha but here I go! People keep comparing our situation with Spuds, there is no comparisons with how they went about recruiting there players and how we did ours, well there is like each bringing 7 players, selling there best player but not with the players themselves for example, if Lallana had been the exact same player but came from Brazil or Spain and was called Rodriquez or something we would of got an amazing player, he is AWESOME end of, the boy will set Liverpool alight. Tottenhams in's Soldado (29 year old striker - 26 mil), Lamela (Literally one good season in ITALY lol and Roma played pretty much gung-ho, to get the best out of him - 30 mil) Paulinho (must be good because he's Brazilian - he is awful, I saw him in the confederations cup and he was carried through the midfield by Gustavo), Capoue (linked with Cardiff before spurs came in the nab him?), Chiriches (again who?) Chadli(almost joined fulham year previous) and Eriksen (looks a great player but to me he's all pretty no point, can give a nice cross and make a good pass, but for workrate and movement he doesn't seem too super (there a reason at 12 million he didn't go to a top club 'Dortmund rejected the chance' - let's see how he gets on this season) but Liverpool we have and are targeting practical great players, Lambert (double figures for goals both Pl seasons. upgrade on Aspas and Borini? - home boy so got the hunger and passion) Lallana (been superb since his days in league one, amazing he wasn't picked up sooner, two great feet, great passer of the ball, can score with poise from close or ferocity from far, and him and Henderson ran the most in the prem last season and we all now how much we appreciate hendos work rate, well we have two of them now.) and Can, ( powerful midfielder and can play anywhere on the field, two good feet, energetic, strong, young, hungry, and Bayern planned to do the same with him as Kross, Lahm in give them to another budelisga club get them games and then get them back, but we got him first :) ) Lovren (93% pass completion, quick, aerially strong, great tackler, positioning) Markovic (albeit Avram Grant, but he was quoted as saying apart from Messi and Ronaldo he hasn't seen a more talented 19 year old, he's electric pace, great passer - be a great buy for the future) and Betrand (that's really the only blemish on what looks to be a transfer season to really set us up for the next 5 years aleast with pure quality. Are owners accept that for foreign players if there good enough we are but a stepping stone to real & Barca, so why pay 30 mil for a 30 year old with no sell on fee when you can pay 30 mil for a 20 year old and he will aleast be a good player but if he goes world class you know you have a big cheque in your pocket. Oh and Lallana, Bertrand, Lovren and Lambert all have prem experience so there's no let's see what they can do next year. and add to that Sturridge, Sterling, Hendo, Coutinho, Allen, Sakho, Flanagan and Mignolet who are all going to get better, and then Ibe, Texteria, Suso, Wisdom, Smith, Brannagan, Chrivella, Kent, Rossiter, Jones, Illori ( IT COULD NOT BE A BETTER TIME TO BE A RED) Just sheer exciting times to come. My sarcastic mate returns, Markovic is a very raw player, your spot on with that. Imo he will need one to two seasons to flourish. Lallana will be a top top player for us next season ;)

Ems, are you on something inall seriousness.? Lambert will replace sturridge when he's injured or rested, that is a fact you finding it hard to come to terms with. A player that has scored 5goals from open play last season? Dude you have given yourself a spanking with an embarrassing uneducational opinion about a footballer. and I will be offended if you use the word offended again to any fan on this page. Everyone has.opinions on this page, might it be viable or not, I think you might be frustrated mate? The united fans can give you links for animals do funny things' think.it would be your thing ems :)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Just getting annoyed with all the criticism fans are giving Lambert before he's even pulled on a shirt when none of it is justified. Do his free kicks not count then? Didn't see anybody chalking Suarez's free kicks off his tally last year. Okay, penalties might not be a great barrometer of a player but you are judging a playmaker on his goals scored from open play. That is ridiculous. Lambert is barely even a striker for Southampton anymore. He drops into the hole allowing Rodriguez and Lallana to come in off the wings. He is a creator. If you put him in the box though he is clinical. Just because he isn't greedy does not mean he isn't a good player.

I think people are judging him based on youtube compilations, meaningless stats and his height. If you think he's an out and out striker there is no opinion about the matter; you're wrong. He isn't even that good in the air because a target man is not his game! It's an aspect to his game he is capable of, but he is not a world class header of the ball.

I'm sick of fans writing off the signings just because they didn't cost loads or are still young. People would be going mad if we signed Barkley. Here's a 'stat' for you. Emre Can played less games, often in more defensive positions, but he was directly involved in more goals than Barkley still. Adam Lallana was arguably one of the best playmakers in the league last season. Only Silva and Hazard matched him in my opinion. Lambert was one of only 12 players in Europe to get double figures in both goals and assists. I can't see a problem with Lambert signing for £4m so just get off his back. I'm with you, I want another striker; one who is different to Sturridge and Lambert (as I think Borini is better out wide). I would not be opposed to Huntelaar, Lacazette, Higuain etc as they are all compeltely different in their own ways to any options we currently have at the club. We are looking to sign another forward regardless of the Markovic deal as all the Ed's have repeatedly stressed so if anything it is you with the issue. Why are you being so negative? I understand you probably hero worship Suarez and think he single handedly got us to second last season (which he didn't), but don't criticise new players based on irrelevant stats and unfounded opinions. Watch the players first and judge them on their whole game, not just one aspect of it. Lambert is a playmaker forward, not a poacher. If he had scored 15 goals from open play last season (which would've made 22 in total) and got 0 assists I bet you wouldn't be complaining. Why is scoring goals more valued than assisting them?

I apologise for getting so frustrated, but your post was just the tip of the iceberg of moaners and groaners and I'm sick of it mate. We are 9 days into the transfer window and have 3 players signed, 3 more bids placed, a rumoured medical tomorrow etc. Why are you still angry?

Our striking options currently are Sturridge, Borini, Aspas, Lambert, Dunn, Yesil. Lambert and Aspas aside, they are all young players who will only be better next season. Aspas if he stayed would definitely improve though. Why judge a player as not good enough after 1 season in a new team, country, lifestyle and football league? I'd be 100% happy with going with what we've already got. You are not looking at the bigger picture and you're single mindedly focusing on replacing Suarez like for like. There is no like for like, but everyone we have signed so far is a great player and they at least deserve your support for next season.

Just give Lambert a chance mate because he will seriously suprise a lot of people next season when you all realise he is more like Sherringham than a poor mans Shearer. He brings others into the game, makes unselfish runs, floats excellent balls into the box, plays people in behind, knocks headers down for people breaking into the box etc. Let's ignore his 4 penalties or whatever then. He got 8 goals (you cannot take away free kicks!) and 10 assists in a mid table team. What do you think will happen when he is suddenly aiming at Sturridge and Sterling instead of Rodriguez and Ramirez and has better supply to score his own goals)? His link up play with Lallana in particular was incredible, and we now have both at our disposal. All I'm asking is that people stop judging Lambert on simply 'goals scored' and judge him as the player he is as a whole; a very creative forward who chips in with a fair amount of goals and will be happy to play second fiddle unlike most players in their prime. Again, I'm sorry for venting days of frustration on your post, but I just want people to stop the doom mongering when it is so clearly not necessary and actually go and watch Lambert play a full 90 for Southampton (not Woy's hoof ball) before they try to claim they know what he is like. A Southampton fan was on here the other day saying how much they'd miss him and he'd be excellent behind our front 2. Go ask a Saints fan what he's like as a player. There is so much to his game and judging him on goals scored alone is naive and unfair.

Your assessment is spot on mate, but you also need to consider that Rickie was not intended to play as much as he did last season, but events (Rodriguez, Osvaldo etc.) meant he had to.

His games will need to be managed carefully next season otherwise his long term back problems will put him out completely. There is a reason why Saints let him go so cheaply, and that is it.

Equally, take a look at Lallana's stats. in terms of minutes played per game started. He would have been Saints most substituted player last season.

Not certain LFC will find they can get any more from them, so be cautious.

Big Al, I agree, I think Lambert will be to replace Sturridge when injured or needs resting. I don't think he will play behind forward(s), coutinho, lallana, sterling will be more likely to play that roll in my opinion.
Think Lambert is a good all round footballer and will do well when called upon but see his game time limited barring injuries to be honest. Hard to suggest how many goals and assists due to above.

EMS, you seem to want to use stats to back up your points but say at other times other posters state meaningless stats? can't have it both ways mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers StMarys. I'd be happy if they just match what they contributed last season! Although I think Lallana will excel alongside Hendo and Gerrard. Interesting to hear about Lamberts back though. He'll certainly be a squad player if you're correct.

Hope you lads do well next season. Tadic will be a star for you!

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers MarcO!

Agree0 Disagree0

If Lambert replaces Sturridge which I agree with you he will in the case of injuries he would play as a false 9 if Rodgers uses him right with two forwards coming in off the wings like Sterling and Markovic etc.

Stats are great analysis tools Alan but taking them out of context is meaningless. For example (extreme) Mingolet had an awful first season because he scored 0 goals. Right? Wait you mean that's not his job?

Lambert is a forward. His job is to help us get the ball in the back of the net. I don't care if he does that from a set piece, open play, or if he just plays the killer pass. Either way, he did his job. Last season he contributed to 22 goals in the league alone. I don't see it as a problem that 4 of those were penalties. Costa contributed towards 31 and I think about 12 were penalties. So you could argue that after taking away penalty goals, Lambert is just as effective as Costa and he costa hell of a lot more! (Punbelievable Jeff!)

Agree0 Disagree0

EMS, not disagreeing at all re Lambert, just saying as I have said to you before stats can and do mislead and be manipulated to prove a point (not saying you have in any instance by the way) but interestingly I do seem to recall you playing down Gerrards stats due to set pieces and or pens, however take them fully into account with Lambert.
As I say, you can't have it both ways mate.

So think of it this way, If he messes up again like he did with Chiellini/Evra/Ivanovic et al then a lifetime ban means no transfer fee for Barca and they lose and get nothing back. Whoever we buy or whatever team we put out in the champions league BR needs to learn that playing in Europe is totally different playing in England. When playing away its ab out being solid in defence and catching teams on the break to get the away goal. If we go and play like we played last year, yes we may beat some teams but will end up being torn apart by the better teams who are more clinical in from of goal. So sort out the defence BR.

Suarez goals won us nothing. Suarez incidents cost us a lot. Without Suarez goals this coming season I can imagine us scoring 10-15 less goals. No problem. Because with the improvements to the defense that will surely be made our defense could easily concede 10-15 less add that to the fact we will be playing a more solid formation with only 1 striker the team as a whole should be more solid & that with the improved defense I don't think we'll have a problem. Ps I've been saying since January Lucas would be gone in the summer he doesn't fit our style of play & is far too good to want to sit on our bench I think ed001 will finally agree

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Im sorry but all this garbage about Suarez going will have no impact etc is such rubbish. Do.people hear themselves? No doubht he had to go, no question about that however a player is going who scored 33 goals, provided double figures in assists and has influence in our goals and his partnership with suarez was the best in the league. Its okay saying yes suarez had to go but let's be real, he needs replaced with a top player.

Agree0 Disagree0

What improvement to defence? Although we seem to have £30m for Sanchez, yet another attacker, we cannot get 'top target' Moreno or Lovren.
We're finally back in CL and cannot attract any quality.
Didn't see any other CL team try for Lallana or Lambet and both teams with first options on Can and Markovic refused.

Aside from the 31 league goals, how many assists? How many free kicks won? Penalties?

Just cause he bit someone we can't wait to get rid yet no one seems bothered his level of player are not coming in?

Agree0 Disagree0

I really don't get why everyone is playing down how important suarez was to Liverpool now he's joining barcelona

Agree0 Disagree0

Lallana will replace his assists in a 4-3-3 formation we just need a top winger who can score 10-15+ goals a season and let Sturridge be the main striker

Agree0 Disagree0

^ thankfully we have.some Real fans, the question is we donot have unlimited.funds. I would like us to sign.lovren and moreno and if there's money available sign a.quailty forward but who is there? Huntelaar we are being linked too but he is nowere near what we.need.
Who would people realisticly want?

Agree0 Disagree0

Agree 100% with the first 3 comments. Suarez's contribution needs replacing to the best possible extent we can. Yes we will have Lallana and maybe Can in the starting 11 but at the expense of probably Coutinho & Allen/Lucas, all very talented players. If we still had Suarez our squad would definitely have improved with those signings and our starting 11 also, albeit not by a huge extent considering who we're replacing in the team. However this isn't the case, Suarez is leaving and we have a huge gap in our team who I don't believe can be replaced by Markovic yet as he is quite simply no way near being the finished article, which is the epitome of what Suarez is. I genuinely believe we would significantly benefit from another wide attacking addition to the first team be that Shaqiri, Greizmann or someone else of that quality, because at the moment our starting 11 is weakened without Suarez despite the replacements we have signed and Lovren + a LB being looked at.

Agree0 Disagree0

He was very important no doubt. But the fact remains if our defense was as good as citys or Chelseas we would have won the league. All we will do is balance out less goals scored less goals conceded, if you concede less you don't need to score as many. If we concede 15 less next season which is very probable and someone scores half as many as Suarez did there's the 30 he scored.

Agree0 Disagree0

Eez eh
Spot on mate, if were.to sign moreno and lovren, we would create a balance

Morning Ed's and all. I was wondering if you had heard anything about interest in Miralem Pjanic, brilliant player deep lying playmaker, could be a long term replacement for Stevie?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - There is a lot of interest in him. Not from Liverpool.}

09 Jul 2014 08:10:53
Couldn't find anything in search.

Can you shed any light on yaya toure leaving and if as the Express is saying we are ready to make bid?

I feel sure if he was off we would show interest with every other club in the world, but I presume a move would be extremely unlikely!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Try the Manchester City page.}

09 Jul 2014 08:43:06
Ed002 I saw down the page you said we are getting into a high risk situation debt wise. Does that surprise you considering how big of a company FSG is, they must have people knowing what they are doing spending so much. I really can't see the logic unless the hope is too keep a place in the champions league for a number of years. In which case is a huge risk

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have no idea what you mean about FSG.}

09 Jul 2014 08:42:16
First time posting Ed002 if Liverpool get £65 million for LS and the fact we would have had money to spend with out that would you still expect us to spend a lot more than £40 million we have already spentie on a centre forward to replace LS.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I have no interest in discussing money.}

08 Jul 2014 22:36:30
Hey I know you don't like discussing money etc but you keep mentioning debts and we are spending the money already coming in, I.e we were already expecting the Suarez money but are things really that tight at an field! Just a few comments from Brendan make me believe were not to bad example ( he did an interview last year in the summer with Robbie Savage and he was asked if a player is available for 30mil can Liverpool afford him and Brendan said yes but what we have to do is convince them of our project and that were heading in the right direction and then before Suarez had bitten yet another person he says I hear everyone talking about everybody else strenghing next season but so will we, so apart from maybe Markovic (25mil) were we already planning on spending this much because I see them as all needed rather than panic buys so cover Suarez leaving, you just look at our bench last year!) Just wondering what info use are going off? Is it more to do with us in the FFP limitations rather than the wealth of owners/club? Thanks again I don't know wehter this post will appear as none of my others have in a while!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - You seem to have forgotten Lallana very quickly.}

I think Rj91 means we were already planning on spending some money before the Suarez deal came about, so now we could almost have a net spend of £0 this summer, depending on further purchases and sales.

Is this the clubs plan now because we are in debt?
It would make sense to me because it seems like a safe model to run the club

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we need to wait until the end of the transfer window to see what the actual net spend is. I don't thinkit will be too severe by the time Liverpool of load the players they see as surplus to requirements and of course Suarez Aspas, Agger, Suso, Lucas to name a few who might be shown the exit door.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well Lallana was in place of (Mkhitaryan & Willian) who we already had the money for last summer, and then add 14 Mil for Can and Lambo then we have spend 40Mil potentially with addons etc 50mil, that doesn't seem to extravagant for a team of Liverpool's Stature and too much different than previous summers. Also forget Suarez our income had increased without champions league as are revenue was posted at 170mil ish 11/12 and then 240mil ish 12/13 and now we have the added tv revenue which we accumulated more than prem winners in man city due to more tv time (Liv 99.7mil & Man c 99.4 - roundabout) so now when Suarez goes we have spent nothing as it seems the club are demanding a big fee upfront (with Barca having to sell Alexis first it seems) so if he goes for even 60 and we get 40 upfront we have spent under 10mil, we also have players to sell i.e Reina, Agger, Lucas, Coates, Assaidi, Aspas, Johno (although we won't get much of a fee for him, its still about 4/5mil off the wage bil yearly), Enrique, Skrtel, Borini, Coady, so even if we can get 2.5 mil each for them that's 27.5 mil in along with 40 mil upfront for Suarez! Are things as bad as we are made to believe or are things quite Rosey? i'm going off nothing but what I read about on internet and that so I am by no means adamant about what I have said but if there not accurate could you please shed some of your knowledge on it. thanks :)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - What a load of nonsense. The club has made huge losses for years and has again got considerable debt. We don't talk about money because people like you simply don't understand.}

Think we need a spreadsheet page eds :)

Agree0 Disagree0

Re-read what I posted and I can't seem to find a lot of 'Nonsense' as you quite elegantly put it. The stadium will cost 150mil, with which when the owners took over expected to pay 450mil for a new stadium so we surely can afford it, even Ian ayre said that no players will be sold to pay for it, in fact we can still improve the squad. Haven't we also got our debt right down? tell you what we all need your contacts because it looks like were all getting fed crap from people in the club, and everyone outside haha thanks for the work :)

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - They were never going top build a new stadium for £450M. The debt has been increasing year on year. The club lost £50M a year for the first three years of ownership. You have a very naïve view of the finances and this is why we don't discuss them.}

09 Jul 2014 09:36:38
I'm confused as to why Liverpool have prioritised signing Markovic instead of Shaqiri can someone explain this to me? And why is Rodgers is trying to get rid of Agger, the best defender we have at the minute?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 10:18:59
Surely Rodgers deserves our support after last year.

Agree0 Disagree0

Because agger is nowhere near the best defender Liverpool have.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agger our best defender.clearly no good if injured for 50 percent of his career and had some dodgy displays last season

Agree0 Disagree0

Agger has lost pace and he is terrible at marking men at corners and free-kicks. He has been turned inside out the past year when anybody has ran at him. Going forward he hasn't added anything like he used to years ago.

Big wages for a player with a history of injury problems, getting older and only good enough for our bench now. To improve the club you (as in Rodgers) have to be ruthless.

From Aggers point of view, he has been fantastic for us overall and I would rather see him starting for a foreign club than sitting on our bench.

Agree0 Disagree0

Shaqiri himself is not a proven top player, too inconsistent. Trust BR.

Agree0 Disagree0

Markovic is young and has something special.he has pace and ball control.very talented player.

Okay for the last fecking time Suarez in our team was very overrated. everything was almost forced to him and he would score or lose the ball and he was bound to score with the 20+ times a game he got the ball in the final third.

People say he is more of a team player than "selfish sturridge" ridiculous. Suarez demanded the ball all the time sturridge made a lot of runs creating space for Suarez and others and was unselfish without the ball.

When Suarez did get the ball we would push forward but those times he lost the ball quickly lead to the opposition having a counter attack on and getting a lot of goals. going back to sturridge at least a wild shot gives the team time to get back into position.

Like why oh why do you think our points return and win percentage is higher without Suarez and our goals conceded is much less without Suarez!.

I went back and analysed some games from last season with and without and I recommend some of you to do the same without Suarez we were more fluid and the ball was moved quicker up top.

I would like to add I'm in no way saying Suarez is a bad player some of the things he can do is magic but Liverpool will be fine ; I'd even say better ; without Suarez.

Now hopefully some people will stop moaning about how we won't cope and will get relegated blah blah blah

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I cannot remember a goal we conceded where it was due to Suarez directly losing the ball.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 09:49:51
Is this some kind of joke? Over rated? Dear lord, pack it in yesome of what your saying is fact and I agree with parts but to say the all time joint top scorer in a 38 game season (he didn't even play in all 38) is over rated is a joke it's easy to turn on a player when he's gone/going and don't get me wrong i'd rather him go due to the silly antics but to turn on him when we've argued for ages that he is pretty much the best player in the world behind messi and Ronaldo is bull. His antics effect his attraction to a club and effects the way fans view him as a person but it doesn't effect how good the player can perform

Agree0 Disagree0

@haych

There may not have been a direct moment where Suarez lost the ball and bang shot and goal.

But when Suarez lost the ball it was usually as we were just pushing forward so when he lost it everyone is then high up the pitch and out of position so long balls over the top or a couple of quick passes by the opposition meant we were seriously on the back foot leading to chances and corners or unnecessary fouls given away all leading to chances for the opposition off Suarez almost being to direct too quickly.

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks for enlightening us for the last fecking time on the attributes and value to the team of Suarez oh wise one, that saves us having an opinion of our own when we can just read the musings of Shane!

Your post is utter tripe by the way, it comes across as the ramblings of a petulant child who's had his x-box confiscated, the x-box is rubbish anyway, I never liked it.

Have a word with yourself lad, Suarez is possibly the best player I've ever seen at Anfield, but like all players, they leave one day so you just get on with it and hope you can produce or buy the next world class player, some clubs never have a player so good so just be grateful that we've enjoyed players of his talent and ability and accept it for what it is.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ha ha try telling Uruguay they were better off without Suarez he will make any team better that's fact
Up the pool

Agree0 Disagree0

Bit ridiculous Shane, Suarez was definitely not overrated. And of course when Suarez lost the ball it was usually when we were pushing forward? that's the style of play we played and he played as an attacker so of course when he lost the ball we were high up the pitch and on the back foot? The same thing happened when Sturridge lost the ball? Ridiculous. The lad is clearly a headcase and we can all accept that but in terms of what he gave the team when we had him last near was amazing. Luis Suarez the player will be sorely missed not just in Liverpool but in the Premier League. Luis Suarez the person will not be missed.
Jack!

Agree0 Disagree0

You've misunderstood what I meant by over rated. I was using that to the people who rate him as irreplaceable and the best of all time. to this I was just saying he is not was not and nor will he be. Although he is one of the best of all time with some of the magical things he could do but as an all around player to say he is the best and irreplaceable is not true and there are clear stats which show this.

Win percentage with Suarez 50% without 64%
Goals per game with 2.4 without 2.1
Goals conceded with 1.1 without under 1

The goals per game and goals against are rough as I can't quite remember them and am not bothered looking them up. these same stats were seen with him at Ajax also. can't be a complete coincidence like.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree 100%. I think people are twisting 'over rated'. I knew what you meant. Yes he is a world class player, but people are overplaying our reliance on him. He is in fact reliant on us. We made him look better than he is due to an excellent system/style of play. He is one of the best players in the world, but he consistently fails to deliver in big games. I can only remember a handful of games against top 4 opposition where he has played well. He is a flat track bully. Nothing wrong with that; it guarantees wins against lesser opposition and gave us an excellent goal difference. His 'crucial goals' scored was far lower than Sturridges though. Sturridge scored critical winners or equalisers most of the time.

I think you are right though. Suarez damages the balance of our team, gives away the ball too easily and everything was designed to go through him. Our dynamic will change next season. I don't think we'll be weaker overall though.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 11:27:26
Shane those stats mean nothing as they can't be measured against each other due to the team with Suarez not playing the exact same set of opponents to the team without Suarez. Now stop being silly - Until he signs for Barca Suarez is by far your best player. The first step is acceptance.

Agree0 Disagree0

Did I ever say he isn't a world class player? I'm just fed up reading about how we need to buy loads of top class players or we'll be midtable. and you must be able to see that when Suarez played we actually did almost become a one man team and become over dependant on him? Yet when he didn't play there was no over focus on him and our threat came from a number of players.

Agree0 Disagree0

Also as I said players lose the ball yes but Suarez was overly direct no matter where he was on the pitch other players at least when losing the ball others had time so they were up close to where the ball was so we could close them down quicker. as I've said if you watch back a couple games with and without you'll see it.

It's just my opinion but I feel I've given enough reason with it for it not to be called utter tripe.

I wanted Suarez gone last summer but was happy to support him throughout the season and the same applies to this summer and did even before the biting incident of course less so.

Agree0 Disagree0

Well redrosie that's a bit like saying that Suarez scored 31 goals whose going to replace these? Well then how many of these goals won us point or weren't the 3rd and 4th against Norwich etc. People Use stats to say he's irreplaceable so you can't have it both ways. and these stats are over a period with two separate club's.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jul 2014 13:23:29
Hmm I agree with Waro, does that make me a cynic haha?

Let's not go down the road of Suarez was no good anyway guys. He's class hence why he's moving to barca for big bucks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We have 3, we will be fine

Agree0 Disagree0

Sturridge, Borini and Lambert for one position. I think that is sufficent. Hopefully we sign a great wide player and can play 4 3 3 we looked more balanced with. We only played the two up to accomodate Suarez and Sturridge.

Sturridge lambert borini aspas is cack

This philsophy is perfect for the Premier league.

Selfless in front of goal was key IMO. Imagine if we had done that in games that we have absolutely hammered teams, but only managed to get 1 or 2 goals.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes, let's hope BR abandons his own beliefs and principles that have worked so successfully for us in the PL and copy the Germans! Great site eds much appreciated

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why though we have Enrique just use Brad Smith as no2 along with Robinson. We all though Flanno's day were numbered now its time for Robo to step up.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think he could be a great signing. Most on here whinged about Sturridge and Henderson. Look what Brendon has done with them.

Agree0 Disagree0

@Dom83, why would he be signed as a backup LB? I hope we don't sign him but if we do then it will be to start. It would also be Enrique to be sold so we would have Bertrand starting LB with cover provided by Flanno, Brad Smith and Emre Can. No chance of Enrique too.

Heyaa ed, hope you are holding up the fort against the tides of madness!
Sorry to be a bother, I am just curious if something is going on with a certain Carlos Vela this summer? He has stalled a little bit I think, but he is still a classy player, and I recall that we were keeping tabs a year or two ago, just in case Chewy Suarez leaves? Has the club shown any recent interest?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

If its just down to money. We have been spending at will well beyond 20 mil mark.
Ed. what's your say.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - not a chance he will be joining mate, first sign he is going to move would lead to every big club making a bid. He has no reason to favour us over the others, who would pay more.}

09 Jul 2014 02:02:53
Excited if we sign markovic, looks a real talent.
However if sturridge gets injured next season, we have.no other top CF. Lambert scored 14 goals last season and I believe 10 of those were from.penalties and setpieces. I really hope we use our money more wisely. We need a.top LB AND CB. Lambert was bought for 4million plus, still not convinced by his signing. Origi looks likely at a hefty sum and is very unproven and will loaned back.next season. Betrand looks likely at 6ish.million and is not an improvement in what we have. that's 20plus.million on players who will most likely not improve us at all and a possible 20million that could have been saved.considering our debts.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Is he the next Adam Lallana AL :-)

In all fairness I saw him quite a few times last season and he does look like a talent albeit very raw still, plus he always done well for me when I signed him on football manager lol that's normally the best way to find out how good a player is ain't it?

Agree0 Disagree0

Origi is for the future, you've clearly never watched Bertrand if you think Johnson/Enrique are better players and for the last time Lambert is not a Centre Forward! At best he is a false 9! He plays off the main attackers and drops deep to create.

I am getting sick of this negativity and complete lack of knowledge regarding Lambert. He is a creator who can take a wicked set piece and is clinical when he does get into the box. Go and watch him in a full 90 minutes for gods sake because your lack of understanding offends me.

Agree0 Disagree0

Have faith in the players we have. Sterling scored 10 in 34 games last season. If he plays the whole season he'll add another 6 goals. If the team is set up for Sturridge he'll score more as his chance conversion rate was better than Suarez. Lambert will get double figures. In Markovich & Sterling we'd have arguably the two most exciting wide players at their age in world football. With Coutinho & Lallana we can open teams up more consistently and use them as a deadly duo. One gets an hour and comes off and the other is fresh for the last 30 mins. The only question left is whether we sign another striker like Huntelaar and whether he's on top of Borini or in preference to Borini.

Agree0 Disagree0

EMS, have you heard of the word humility? Because you pontificating offends me, the opinions of others are just as relevant as yours so tone down your reply's lad.

Lazar Markovic was billed as a global star in the making, with Benfica reportedly beating off competition from Inter Milan and Chelsea for his signature. Avram Grant went as far as to state: "I can say that apart from Ronaldo and Messi, Markovic is one of the best talents I've ever seen at 19 years of age."

This kid is going to set the Premier League alight this season. Yes, he needs to adapt, and to improve, but he's got everything needed to rapidly advance. Sterling didn't happen overnight -- he was given a taste, and slowly the opportunities started to accumulate until he was a regular. The only difference is that Markovic has been at many different clubs already, and quickly progressed into a first team player before he SHOULD have been ready. At Partisan Belgrade he was thrown right in, Benfica, perhaps more so, and when he gets to Liverpool, he'll already be the best left sided attacking option we have. I have no doubt he can be worth double that figure in two years, but that's not my concern. I just want to see the lad play for us! Hope he does come in early so he can get a full preseason and plenty of time at Melwood.

So, we've spent 40 million. With rumours coming through about markovic and origi, that's another 30 million. A cb and lb will be 25-40 million depending on if its Bertrand or otherwise. And I still believe markovic won't be the only attacking player, say another 20 million. that's about 120 mil rounder up from the lower estimate, and were getting roughly 60 mil for Suarez. Say we sell Reina, skrtel, assaidi, aspas, suso, maybe Enrique/lucas/agger, I can't see any. Ore than 30 million being recovered by the numbers people are throwing about! So best case scenario we are 30 million in the sh*t. Could be more! How is this going to work with our debts already?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I think Champions league money will go some way towards it, although I'm not too in the know about the exact figures we'll receive from that!

Also hopefully our wage bill will be significantly lower once the 'deadwood' is shed, so although we'd be in the negative from transfer fees, it may work out cheaper over the course of the season? Again though I'm not entirely sure :)

Have a good night mate :)

Agree0 Disagree0

Why the . are you talking about finances when you obviously haven't got a clue.

Agree0 Disagree0

Surely champions league money won't make a difference till next year?

Secondly I'd be surprised if any of our deals so far would be 100% up front. so realistically this is why the eds don't like it. who knows how much we've actually given Southampton so far or how much we'll get this summer for Suarez etc.

Wudn't it be more like 50 million after ajax and Suarez get there cut? I don't think the champions league money kicks in until nxt summer. Its also going to be hard to sell those players, most will go out on loan. Did everyone no that Sterling has a 20 percent sell on fee too. I think we now no why we beat the bigger clubs to the signings of some of our players. I wonder how much inter get for Coutinho and how much chelski will get for Sturridge.

Hope we can get Origi, Spurs are trying to pinch him.

He numbers are just estimates from what has been said on here, but averaging out mistakes they should be about right! Also you say our deals won't be 100%up front, but neither will the Suarez money it seems.
