The English media are embarrassing themselves yet again by defending Wayne Rooney. If that was Suarez, Drogba, Aguero, Costa etc they'd be getting hammered.

It's sickening how nationality can distort opinions in football.

Rooney cheated. End of discussion.

Agree27 Disagree3

Hate Rooney hate United but this is how football gets paid was the keepers fault for coming out like that Rooney done what 99% of players would do

The only person who really defended him was Hodgson, which is understandable as Rooney is his captain. The others at BBC did not want to upset their guest.

Rooney is the reason the england national team will never do anything.

Most over rated player for a long time, hodgson wants to pipe on about his record for England but ashame he's never done it when it mattered.

Next England friendly we shouldn't be looking beyond Kane and sturridge, but I bet we don't see shrek on the bench.

For future international games Rooney and Kane should start upfront,, and Daniel Sturridge should be nowhere near that team and wrapped up in Cotton wool stuffed in a pillow filled padded cell at Melwood

I watched that video over and over again, Its a blatant dive.

There's me thinking I logged-in to the Liverpool page.

Didn't Gerrard win a penalty when there was no contact a few years ago? I think it was against Sheffield Utd. He was defended by having had to avoid the challenge by jumping out of the way. In my mind there were huge similarities with Rooney last night.

If he hadnt have lifted his leg and kept on running it would have been a penalty anyway. Its no big deal in my opinion. The keeper made the mistake.

Sounds controversial, but I really think diving is taken out of proportion to be honest.
When players are on £150,000+ a week if they don't try everything they can to win then they shouldn't be on that money.
What does annoy me is when some try it after they've screwed up, in that situation the player should accept they've made a mistake and fight to win back the ball for their team.
I'm not saying that diving's good or I want it in the game particularly, but it's never going to be eradicated so rather than just lambasting anyone who goes down too easily in the box we should just train referees so they can distinguish a dive from a foul.

For me had he left his leg there the goalkeeper would have conceded the penalty.

I was more annoyed at Dwight Gayle's antics last weekend; Henderson booked for not touching him then diving a second time claiming Sturridge got him when he didn't - rolling around holding his leg.

Had that been Sterling we would've taken it - dive but there woul've been contact.

It was a penalty - he probably lost his scoring chance because he had to vault the keepers reckless challenge. But by going down like that and claiming contact, it also becomes simulation. There is a sense of ridiculous play acting and diving, but also not being able to trust refs on focusing on the wrong thing and not knowing the rules i.e. there doesn't have to be contact

Lol. Seems your last sentence couldn't be more wrong EMS.

Spot on Hoola, Gayle done my head in last weekend, not a lot got said about him did it, if it was Suarez it would still be back page news today.
