We just became very serious contenders for top four, didn't we?

Now if only we can find someone to bang in a few goals .

Big if there!

For me, the Milner signing is becoming more astute by the day. With Gerrard off to LA we became short on experience and with the continued focus by the club on buying young, someone who knows how to win, work, and stay settled is extremely important. He may not be "talismanic" like Gerrard, but at this juncture he feels like that calming presence that speaks to composure needed.

While these other signings give us the talent to compete at the top, it's Milner I feel who'll fuel a growing maturity. Probably something the fan will hear less about, but it's the influence of these Toures and Milners which sometimes make the biggest difference.

Tiger,
I still think we need a better keeper who can organise a defense and good distributor.
We needed a DM in the form of Medel to protect the defense and break up attacks.
We need a top clas Defensive Coach to finally get us strong and tight at the back.
We really really need the Striker.

What - just because we signed Firmino? His recent team finished 8th, same as the current team of Kovachich. Even if we can get Bacca - which I doubt - his team also finished out of the top 4 (albeit won the EL). None of them played for bad teams or bad managers either.

Don't get me wrong, all very good signings or potential signings, but a lot of people here got very excited last summer because of our signings. I think that even with these 3 we are highly unlikely to finish top4 especially as we also have some big names leaving, Gerrard, probably Sterling (combined 16 league goals between them last year, Firmino and Kovachich scored 14). And we know some players take time to settle in the PL. Again all are welcome and potentially good signings but I suggest to be a more realistic in expectations this time.

No we didn't become top 4 contenders. We already had a squad capable of getting into the top 4, the problem we had and maybe still have, is that the tactics were just inept.

So you are basing our chances of top 4 on how our new signings previous teams finished last season. interesting

If that's the case milners team finished second, that must up our chances.

100% in agreement with Colin
Sorry to disagree with Tiger . We making the same mistakes as last year . buying for the sake instead of addressing the problems, except for Milner whom will provide the much needed experience.

McGoveb, until otherwise changed, we have Lucas who, IMHO, is an excellent DM and fully capable of being that guy in a top-4 team. Not that I'd sneeze at Medel, but I'm happy with what we've got.

As to the all-out striker, I completely agree. Presuming we don't fall foul of FFP, tha, more than any other position, would be the place is spend. As much as Mignolet has his faults, with adequate defence I don't think he's as much of a liability as is our inability to consistently take advantage of attacking opportunities.

24 Jun 2015 17:39:11
We`ll see what happens, boys. We have a more than decent squad to compete if the right players and tactics are implemented and if a stiker (Bacca, I hope) is recruited to add more goals to our team

24 Jun 2015 17:51:59
We'll never get in to the top four with the amount of changes that occurs season in - season out.

I still think our manager is the man, and I'm happy with the players we've acquired, but I suspect much of last seasons problems was with the changes that occurred.

How do you expect a team to gel when they don't know who the flip they are playing alongside? It's going to be a slow process this to get back in to the top four, and one which no one can afford.

I just hope the players settle.

24 Jun 2015 17:55:10
Why, did someone just sort out our defensive issues and sack the manager?

24 Jun 2015 17:58:08
Roy

I don't think firmino is buying for the sake of it he will replace sterling leaving money in the bank.

Sometimes when players come up you've got to go for them.

Lets say firmino trumps any player we bought last summer.

24 Jun 2015 18:22:22
We need a goalscorer. Still the Same story as when Luis Suarez left. Goals needed

24 Jun 2015 18:41:34
The goalkeeping conundrum is going to be the one that costs us, in my opinion. We will never have a solid defence if we don't have a solid, reliable goalkeeper capable of organising it. Mignolet simply cannot fulfill that role and we don't look like signing anybody else - it is going to make a huge difference.

24 Jun 2015 18:58:02
Hence, GO GET BACCA!

24 Jun 2015 19:00:13
The biggest difference next season could be pepjin added to the coaching staff, and what he'll bring

24 Jun 2015 20:47:13
That's funny coming from you Davey, when you spend half of all last season criticizing every poster who doubted whether we would get into Top 4. The word "hypocrite" come to mind.

24 Jun 2015 23:41:21
And how many goals did Gerrard get from open play? Remember all those penalties would be taken by someone else in the absence of Stevie

25 Jun 2015 10:48:11
We had the same defensive issues, the same goalkeeper, and the same manager when we finished second, did we not?

We just happened to score about fifty more goals in that season.

So it seems scoring goals can be useful for a football team, regardless of other issues.

Not sure why Firmino will have trouble gelling alongside Coutinho. Or Milner alongside Hendo or behind Sturridge. Not as if they've never played with each other before.
