Hi eds,

out of curiosity, who was the last player Liverpool bought who surprised you? As in, who you didn't think was good enough but proved you wrong?

{Ed001's Note - in what respect Suarez would have to be the answer to that. I knew he was good enough though, just didn't think he was THAT good. I can't think of the proper answer of the top of my head, I will have to think on it, as I really can't think of many players in recent years that have come good. It has been so rare that we have brought anything out of players through good management and coaching, that it is very easy to see who will be good enough when we buy them.}

I know we didn't buy him but, having seen him earlier in his career, I was incredibly surprised to see Flannagan make the step up and really show his class (before these injury nightmares) - I honestly did not expected it.

{Ed001's Note - that I do agree with, and it just shows how little real gap there is between youth players and adults, it is more about attitude and having desire to keep on improving that decides which make it than anything else.}

Mamadou Sakho

20 Jul 2015 07:12:57
Countinho for me, never heard before.

xabi alonso . i never thought he would be that big or good. i thought he wouldn't even make the first team, let alone become my favourite lfc player.

{Ed001's Note - really? I remember Toshack telling me about him years before, he was telling anyone who would listen about how great Xabi was going to be. So he was the signing I got most excited about, though I never expected him to be so good that, for me, he was our best player while we had him. Off the top of my head, Gary McAllister is one that stands out as better than expected. While I loved him as a player, I remembered him being awesome for Leeds United, and he was still exceptional for Coventry City, I just thought it was too late for him to step up for us like he did.}

Henderson for me

20 Jul 2015 08:29:51
Does Torres not get a mention, we all knew he could play but I never ever thought that he would become the monster he became? Thoughts?

20 Jul 2015 08:37:16
Yea ed , i know he was good and i know he was rated , but you know there was nothing on about him in media at that time. so he was certainly surprising at just how ridiculously good he was. No one i know of really knew Xabi Alonso back then and he was also signed for a good sum back then. i knew i was massively excited for luis garcia the same season but thought we overpayed for alonso that time.

Mommo Sissoko. The guy was immense.

20 Jul 2015 08:41:53
Didi or Sami. Also Peter Beardsley and John aldridge

20 Jul 2015 09:18:26
Hypia for me. Best £2 million ever spent by the club. Top defender, top bloke.

20 Jul 2015 09:20:07
In terms of ayers that we thought weren't good enough, Coutinho must be the biggest surprise. Inter couldn't wait to get rid of him. And Hendo, too - don't think anyone understood the price we paid for him, & he has really turned it around from what I personally expected to be a big disappointment.

And that was on him, going to the manager and saying what do I have to do to stay at the club and improve and earn my place. From the outside looking in, Hendo must surely be the consummate professional. Really pleased he is now club captain, I don't think anyone deserves it more. He looks like he has such passion for the club, too.

Big Sami Hyypia deserves a mention on this thread, never expected him to be such a great signing, we got him for peanuts too.

20 Jul 2015 09:28:31
i agree with irish rover it has to be hyppia he came from nowhere and was legendary for us

20 Jul 2015 09:47:59
I wasn't so much surprised at how good he was but the signing that surprised me in terms of getting him at all was Jerzy Dudek. Westerweld had been having a 'mare of a season and there was a lot of talk that we'd get Chris Kirkland.

I was living in Zurich at the time and remember rushing home to check the news to see if Kirkland had signed only to find that we got both CK and Dudek on the same day.

When we signed him I didn't imagine him going jelly-legged and winning us the CL in a shootout.

Sturridge for me. I thought he was going to be selfish who doesn't fit our high pressing game.
When fit he is one of the best strikers in the epl.

20 Jul 2015 10:13:43
In recent years, Suarez. His record was similar to that of Kuyt's in the Dutch league and I expected him to be a steady signing, but he turned out to be much better player than I thought he could be. I think his success shows how adaptability is the key, like in all wakes of life, people who adapts quicker to the challenges presented will be successful.

Hendo.
i was so upset when he refused to go to Fulham.

20 Jul 2015 10:25:19
The Return of God absolutely stunned me. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

20 Jul 2015 10:31:58
Bring in a good Irish fellow. Mr consistency himself Steve finnan. got him for only a couple of mill if even off Fulham if I remember right

20 Jul 2015 10:33:33
John barnes . I knew he was good but he was unstoppable when he first arrived

20 Jul 2015 11:14:45
I'm going back a bit, but for me it was Johnny Barnes.
He was incredible. Had it all and was arguably the best player in the world at his height, as was unplayable.

20 Jul 2015 11:23:48
Dirk Kuyt, Yossi Benayoun and Peter Crouch. Can't decide between them.

20 Jul 2015 12:31:14
Sean Dundee for me. I never knew he was that good 😂

20 Jul 2015 12:55:56
Hyppia for me too. Best CB Liverpool have had apart from Hansen. Not the quickest but read the game so well.

20 Jul 2015 14:15:41
Going back a while as I was only young when we got him but I think he was relatively unknown. Jan molby
