Despite all the criticism and misgivings about Rodgers recently, i personally think his biggest crime is the absolutely dire style of football we are playing. Fans are paying high ticket prices and satellite TV fees and club membership to watch week after week of utter dross. We would all like to win games and trophies but the bare minimum should be an energetic, entertaining game regardless of the result.
Apart from the rare exceptions, it has been over 12 months of slow passing and ball retention which might get us close enough to their box to hope someone like Coutinho or Benteke can pull a worldy out. I've lost count of the number of games where the stats have shown we had two or three attempts at goal during the entire match. I'm sure most would prefer a tactician akin to Keegan in the 90s rather than the dull and stifling rubbish we have had to sit through recently. We've got the players to compete, they just need to be unshackled and inspired but, despite being given time, patience and enough transfer money to make a sheik jealous, Rogers can't even offer us the minimums of passion, grit and entertainment when his tactics go down the pan.
For the first time ever, I turned off the match halfway through a game on Saturday and found myself wondering if Roy Hodgson was really that bad after all.

Ironically we did not retain the ball against UTD. In fact we couldn't keep than ball in our feet for more than 10 seconds.

We ain't playing any tiki take. UTD did not allow us to play any kind of football.

{Ed001's Note - United? They didn't stop us, we were just that bad and it gave their press hope, which made it even more successful as they knew it worked.}

United didn't need to do anything - we were so poor all they needed to do was attack our stupidly deep defensive line and the goal was going to come. They're a poor team but they beat us easily - that says everything about how we were set up to play. Unforgivable.

14 Sep 2015 07:03:47
Yes we did not press and that helped them to pick their players especially Carrick
But when we had the ball, we did nothing with it either. I don't remember Can or Milner making one successful forward pass.

Seriously, Deep defensive system?. Rafa Bentiez won multiple League titles with Valencia with so called deep defensiive system. Jose won the league last year with the so called boring deep defensive system.

If you know how to play it, you could do wonders. And please stop being ignorant, Not many teams plays those high pressing high line, The whole Italian teams plays 3 at the back and Juventus reached the CL final.

There is no chame in playing a defensive systme, Some of the very best managers and players play it on regluar basis.

Weather you sit deep or play high, If you do nothing with the Ball when you have it, You would win nothing.

UTD did nothing in the first half. We had no interest in going forward and that's not a crime.

{Ed001's Note - you might want to go back and check how Rafa's Valencia side played because it was far from defensive most of the time. It is a crime to have no interest in going forward as the object of the game is to score more goals than your opponent. Perhaps you really should stop wittering on, because all you do is contradict yourself and show a complete lack of any knowledge.}

Deep defensive system is no crime if you know how to counter attack. There are successful clubs and managers who plays this system from decades.

Ed01, Y don't you educate people the consequences of playing high line?

AVB is one prime example and Suarez/Aguero took his Defense to Toilet.

{Ed001's Note - the consequences are no worse than dropping deep and conceding space around the edge of the box like we currently do.}

14 Sep 2015 08:16:55
I am not sure Ed01 what you mean by scoring more than your opposition? Had we played all out attack we would have easily conceeded 3 goals inside 45 mts.

Can you tell me who is scoring 4 for us? Except countinho we are not scoring goals.

We don't play to Benteke's strength so rule out him scoring 30 goals this season.

{Ed001's Note - Harry you obviously just don't understand what I said, as usual, so let's just leave it because it is pointless trying to explain to you.}

14 Sep 2015 08:39:26
If you don't go forward, how did Chelsea and Rafa's team win all those trophies, Harry?

14 Sep 2015 08:48:27
AG

They nick in a goal by counter attackihg football. Sit deep, man behind the ball, Make it compact and nearly impossible to breach, Flat back 4 with your full backs not pushing ahead at all making it a straight line in the defense.

Just what West Ham did against us and ran away with 3 points and 3 goals.

Jose once said ". I know how to win 1-0 than 3-0. "

Rafa has won countless games by 1-0 margin and he still plays the systemn no matter which club he is managing.

If you don't have Suarez / Aguero Strikers upfront who could score given every half chance, its better to play the waiting game.

Im not sure about all out attack, Harry, but the occasional sustained assault on the opposition's goal might make it worthwhile sitting through 90 minutes, don't you think? I don't watch the sport in hope that my team might get a draw with a clean sheet at OT - I want to see them desperate to smash their main rivals by relentless attacking and clinical defending. I want to see their hearts bleeding on the pitch and their legs made of candy floss by the time they walk off because they gave 100% for 90 mins. Instead we get insipid performances which are given a positive spin in the press room by Rogers. Why can't we defend well AND attack well? It's hard not to put all the blame on the manager but he's had the time and money and controls the tactics on the day and for over a year now it has been incredibly underwhelming. Looking forward to a new manager whenever that may be.

14 Sep 2015 08:59:30
So they do go forward when counter-attacking? Can you not see the very obvious mistake when you said that there was nothing wrong with us sitting in like we did against Utd?

14 Sep 2015 09:28:07
Annie Fields

I agree with your sentiments, But This is not the first time we were boring. 5 years under Rafa?

And honestly mate, I never had any hope of us beating UTD at OT. A place where we don't win at all.

If Countinho is out with injury or suspension, We do nothing on the attacking front. Its a painful fact.

14 Sep 2015 09:43:19
New shovel required for Harry?

14 Sep 2015 10:43:01
I don't think we were doing much better with him EG. The 'system'isn't working and i worry it won't change soon enough.

14 Sep 2015 10:53:39
The difference EG is under rafa although not perfect we won things and challenged and on the whole didn't look completly aimless.

Please don't mention rafa and this man in the same breath because there is no comparison.

14 Sep 2015 11:53:26
John

I agree that mate, My point was on playing attractive football.

14 Sep 2015 13:56:53
Rafa at least had a plan on how to beat the opposition, we don't seem to have anything in that department or resort more to luck than anything else! With Rafa, we defended as a team and attacked as a team, with a thought on any counter attack coming back our way!

14 Sep 2015 14:22:39
I agree up to a point EG, but you do know counter attacking football can be attractive too. Its not exclusive to expansive open stuff. Its all about the transition and how the team is set up to play.

14 Sep 2015 17:44:10
EG must have missed the objective of football which is to score goals. Utd did not do a darn thing. They were dire as as well BUT we were more dire than they were which meant in the end, the team with no tactical strategy, clueless system and negative football lost. If you don`t get out of your box and try to play to win, you won`t win most of the time. You may win by an offside goal or a worldie (which is how we won our games this year) but you will not win enuff games to get to where you wanna be. And EG as much as Rafa had his faults and made his mistakes, comparing him to BR is making a mockery of his good record with us here. you sound like those comparing BR to Klopp just because he had a difficult final season.
