in the last 5 years we've had Carragher, Agger, Skrtel, Kyriakgos, Wilson, Wisdom, Sama, Paez, Coates, Sakho, Lovren, Gomez, L.Jones, Polgar, Sokolik, Cleary, Ilori etc.

I'm sure I've missed more off. So why the hell can't we put 3 good centre backs on the pitch at once?

Can is a midfielder and he is costing us goals being played at the back.

We scraped a win against Villa who haven't won since the opening day. And we only scraped it thanks to a few individuals being on fire. Then Rodgers has the cheek to cone out after the game and act like we'd just won the Grand National, World Cup, Tour De France and US Open all in one weekend.

Sorry Rodgers but you're embarrassing the club way too much for my liking. And how much are you paying that wet wipe Danny Murphy to defend you publically on the TV, Radio etc.

Carra and Agger were great, Gomez and Sakho could be. Still wonder what both Widom and Illori (not partnered together) would have been like.

Still hope Jones gets a chant in the future

28 Sep 2015 12:34:24
Agree EMS but it wasn't just Can on the weekend, Sakho actually made some errors but nobody has said anything about him on here as everyone worships him, I won't rip our players but everyone seems to be quick enough to do it but not to certain players, He let that cross go in when you should play safety first which Can obviously let his man go and was getting beaten in the air by Gestede on multiple occasions

28 Sep 2015 12:37:15
Problem for the defenders is what's in front of them and what's behind them.
All those centre backs have had Mignolet behind them.
In front of them the midfielders don't do enough defensive work and there is not enough movement for the defenders to pass to when in possession.
Not absolving the manager of any blame, just saying they're not all bad defenders.

28 Sep 2015 13:00:27
Only about half of the players you mentioned were First team players. And you've got to look at what has happened in goal, replacing Pepe Reina with Mignolet, to have a more balanced persepctive of us defensively.

Danny Murphy is a Red, through and through, and it's a sign of your complete ignorance and lack of intelligence to criticise someone who gave his absolute all for the club.
Danny Murphy is a class act, with more integrity that you will ever aspire to, you low-life sloth.

28 Sep 2015 13:28:18
Cheshire, Danny Murphy is a clueless fool who is blindly defending Rodgers every mistake. He has no capability to be unbiased and realistic. He actually claimed we are top 4 contenders after Saturdays win. Are you seriously going to tell me he knows what he's talking about? Besides, wet wipe is hardly a massively offensive thing to say. It just means he has a weak opinion and doesn't have the backbone to tell it how it is. Everything is sugar coated with him. Questioning my intelligence and integrity as a person due to me having an opinion on somebody whose job it is now is to be judged by fans on his own analysis is a bit pathetic if i'm being honest. If he doesn't have thick enough skin to handle people who disagree with him and will judge him then he shouldn't be a pundit. If you figure out how to remove your own red tinted glasses, do me a favour and help Murphy with his.

As for a lot of them being younger players, so bloody what? How old are Smalling, Blackett, McNair and P.Jones? Being young or youth players is irrelevant. The fact is we have been through about 20 centre backs in 4-5 years and we find ourselves in a position where the best we have is Sakho who is patchy at best right now. The rest have either been misused, wasted, poorly coached, held onto past their sell by date, or simply not even given a chance in the team.

I agree largely with the other replies. They haven't been helped at all by our lack of good keepers and holding midfielders. We've lacked a good keeper since the Reina of 2008 and when Lucas is injured or simply being ignored in Rodgers case, we've had to rely on Gerrard, Adam or Allen as holding midfielders. Who else is to blame except Rodgers that this is a problem we've had for years now? He's had about 8 transfer windows to fix that.

28 Sep 2015 13:48:28
Cheshire discs, what does somebody's playing past have to do with their ability to analyse a clubs management situation. If anything your highlighting of him being a ''red through and through'',is indicative he may not be the best person to view the situation.

I've watched Danny Murphy as a pundit for 2 years now. He's bang average and when he's sat next to Gullit Shearer(who I don't rate) or Jenas he looks out of his depth in his ability to analyse games and moments such as cards, challenges etc. His comments on the Costa incident were laughable.

28 Sep 2015 14:02:33
EMS, Murphy just isn't that good a pundit but no need to slate him like that. Fact is we are 5 points from first, with Struddige back and scoring we could be a weekend or two away from top four. So Murphy isn't a million miles off, just cause you have a different opinion don't drop to some childish name calling, you look embarrasing doing that.

i know i will get a lot of flack for saying this but for me lucas is not as good a def mid as many of you think he makes lots of mistakes and gives fouls away in stupid places that lead to goals and then some one else gets the blame , he should be stopping attacks before they get to our defence but he does not , he does not hold position so basically when he goes on a walk about the midfield is open for players to run through , as good as he is as a person and for the club as a player he is not that good , his sideways passes do my head in he could have passed the ball forward in the game against villa and he chose instead to pass sideways as he usually does , which means the pressure stays on us and we don't put the opposinf team on the back foot , if i played against lucas i would know he is no threat because he just passes the ball side ways and would wait for him to get the ball and tell my players to get ready for a sideways pass , don't get me wrong i want him to be better but he is not and correct me if i'm wrong but what have we won since he has been playing for us

28 Sep 2015 14:31:12
Sounds like you reworded a post post of mine

28 Sep 2015 14:47:34
We have a very good centre back on our books by the name of Tiago llori. Yet he is sent out on loan.

{Ed002's Note - "In more than two years at the club he has played a zero games for Liverpool, a few for Granada and a few for Bordeaux. Clearly enough for you to conclude he is "very good". Pretty hopeless.}

28 Sep 2015 14:50:38
You can put 3 good centre backs on the pitch but it doesn't mean they will play good.
You have to get the tactics and the formation right. The reason we look rubbish at the back is down to Rodgers.

28 Sep 2015 15:36:55
Danny murphy is defending the indefensible hence, should not be immuned to being slated for being morally dishonest just because he played here. As for Ron, you are doing the same thing your BFF does as in, blaming the players he himself bought into the club. that no longer flies. BR can`t coach defence, end of. He never could. was reading somewhere that while with Swansea, he had a 4-1 lead vs Wolves. What was the score? You guessed it, 4-4. Now where have I seen that happen before since he got here? it doesn`t matter what we have, he will still screw up. i dare say that even if I`ve never set foot at Mellwood, i can almost guarantee that they don`t work on the defensive side of things as much as they need to because he simply doesn`t care for it. all he cares is how many times we pass the ball in our own half and how many midfeilders he can shoehorn into the starting 11. Ron, stop blaming the players and blame who brought them and still can`t get the best out of them!

28 Sep 2015 16:54:43
Redohio, I kinda agree with your post. I certainly don't disagree. I was a big Rodgers fan and have been giving him the benefit of the doubt for a while now hoping he can sort things out but admit it is hard to see how the defence has been improved at any time over the last 3 years.

It was pretty poor the year we finished second but with the SSS strike force opposing managers were forced to play defensively as they knew if they attacked and scored we would most likely score 2-3 more. Once Suarez left teams went on the offensive against us again knowing we didn't offer the same threat.

I still don't like to see other posters on here berate the manager and players on here, I don't see the need for it and I do believe they are trying their best for our club, but maybe a change would be better.

Oh, and I always liked Rafa's quote (paraphrased here) about if yr making a table and just have a leg missing, just buy a table leg. I do believe that the transfer committee and Rodgers could learn from this and not keep buying no 10's

Cheers

28 Sep 2015 17:17:05
Ohio, I don't know how you conclude I'm blaming the players and not Rodgers. Perhaps try reading my post again.

28 Sep 2015 17:26:05
Danny Murphy isn't foolish.

As for Sakho, he needs a couple more games to up his fitness to what is expected.

28 Sep 2015 19:57:45
Cialbray i think you will find that sakho came in for a lot of criticism post match you maybe just wasnt around to read it maybe. He had an off day and nobody denies that my friend.

28 Sep 2015 19:53:06
Sulfolk, I did not berate the manager. I am calling the manager out on always flip-flopping on issues and conveniently avoids to tell the truth. he constantly avoids resposibility and slates the players when things aren`t going his way. It is not an insult to call someone out as dishonest if what he is doing is in fact, dishonest. If to you that is insulting the manager then I can`t help you there. I`m not the only one calling him out on it so don`t know why you`re picking on me for saying what is true. As for Ron, I stopped caring whatever you thought because you like your friend, slate the players for not doing their jobs or you calling them mediocre. if they are mediocre, what are they doing here? Who brought them in? And who is slating them in the media in a bid to escape the blame? Your post glossed over BR`s share of the responsibility. NONSENSE!! he is solely to blame for the defensive and gaolkeeping issues we have and unlike you, i won`t gloss obver his share of the blame.

28 Sep 2015 20:58:47
You're arguing with yourself Ohio.

Enjoy

28 Sep 2015 22:25:05
"I asked for a table, and they bought me a lamp."

That the quote you mean, Suffolk?

29 Sep 2015 00:18:53
One thing I can't understand is that if BR is insistent on playing 3 at the back, why play Can in the back 3? He just doesn't have the mind for defence, play him where he will be most effective, which is midfield. I can't for the life of me figure out why he suddenly decided drop Gomez, the kid was brilliant even playing out of position. I think Moreno has been superb since he has returned to the side, but why not play a back 3 of Gomez/Skrtel/Sakho? we certainly would be a bit better, albeit not by much with Gomez who is a defender rather than Can who is a makeshift one, even Can said he didn't want play more in a back 3 and I thought he was given assurances that this would not be the case. However BR has made promises to other players and then to go back on his word. I think is amazing to be honest that we have such a high number of clean sheets, because I just wait every game for us to concede, and I am not sad or disappointed anymore when we do, because it has just become the norm for the team. I just can't figure out if us simple folk can see how bad we are defensively and that we are not playing players to their strengths, why can't BR and all his staff who all have massive qualifications and study the game and analyse week in week out? I'd love to know what defence drills they do in training, because it just doesn't work. I always thought if you could combine the defensive prowess of a Rafa team, with the passing and attacking prowess of a BR team (13/14 season to be exact) then that team would be invincible, alas will never be the case.

Hi ED02

Tiago llori has not been given a chance at Liverpool and that is my point.
Watched him in the u21s championships for Portugal and he reads the game well, ball playing defender and also can defend.
Also watched when I could when he played in Spain and France and again he looks to be a talent (in my opinion).
Not played for Villa yet but I think that given a chance he would prove his worth.
Maybe Premier League is to physical for him but until you play him you don't know.

{Ed002's Note - So you made the decision that he is "very good" whilst watching him play in an Under 21 game or two. As I said, in more than two years at the club he has played a zero games for Liverpool, a few for Granada and a few for Bordeaux.}
