I was really pleased for Skrtel when he smashed that goal in on Saturday. Ok, it's not really what he's in the team for but all defenders like to bag the occasional goal, and it's important that they do so, especially a cracker like that. Skrtel has been hammered by a lot of supporters over a long period of time and has some high-profile detractors in this forum, but I think some of it is unfair. OK, he's not the best in the business or the best we've ever had and he was culpable in the passage of poor play that led to City's goal on Saturday but I'd say he has been our most reliable centre back for a number of years now. What he may lack in communication and reading of the game, he makes up for with spirit, battling and good old-fashioned no-nonsense defending. I would certainly rate him above any other centre back we've had at the club since Carragher and Hyppia, although I do rate Sakho highly and expect him to become our defensive rock if he can avoid frequent injury lay-offs. Skrtel is now on his fifth Liverpool manager. He's had at least the same number of centre-half partners, often changing from one match to the next and countless different full-back combinations either side of him. He's not always had the best of midfield cover in front of him either and, whilst I don't think Mignolet is the disaster that a lot of people make him out to be, he's not one of those keepers that really bosses the back four and breeds real confidence in the defenders.

I am not sure who started it, but this page has always criticized Skrtel. They bring up small small minute defects in him and blame the entire problem on his shoulder.
He is not a world class defender and he has never claimed to be one. But he does the job and survived 5 managers in the past 7 years at the club.

He is better than Cahil

Better than Per Mertesacker

Better than Demichelis

Better than Phil Johnes

All the above players are from top 4 clubs.

Blaming him for the goal conceded, what was Lucas doing to stop Aguero?

Ironically Klopp Favors Skrtel.

Brilliant post mate.

Sorry mate but you said it yourself - he lacks in communication and reading of the game. Spirit doesn't make up for that - his lack of comms, and his lack of positional sense, costs us both goals and games and the bottom line is that there is no way to cover that with spirit. A great last ditch tackle can't compensate for not doing the simple stuff consistently.

Yeah i was impressed by mignolet doing the sweeper role. It shows he is alert to situation.

Skrtel is not better than Gary Cahill.

But yep, always gets bashed on here but always gets picked by the managers whilst the other defensive player has changed. Funny that?

You can say 'he's survived, he's outlasted etc'.

Another phrasing would be 'he's the common denominator to a lot of long standing defensive issues'.

The reason Skrtel has survived so long has been Agger's injuries, Sakho being out of favour and Lovren's deficiencies meaning that backing up or replacing him has never been a high enough priority. But he's still a weakness in the line.

Hijkle's post is spot on. The fact that he survived however many managers means absolutely nothing because his issues and flaws even after that period, still remain so what does that tell you. Last ditch tackles only means you were out of position to begin with so how is that a quality? Even Carra who played with him for years couldn't stand him as a CB partner. I agree he has improved under Klopp which makes Klopp a miracle worker in itself but don't fool urselves.

Klopp favours skrtel. OVER WHO!? Lovren has been injured and just came back, now Sakho's out, BR got rid of Wisdom, Kelly, Coates (probably helped Carra retire early too) and Ilori, Gomez is injured and Toure (just came back? ) Skrtel has no real competition, as long as he stays fit and other injure themselves. We will see where Skrtel is in 2 years as to whether Klopp favours him.

Ed001 has pointed out to you god knows how many times the reason Skrtel gets a lot of stick.

Sorry but there is no ''favouring'' going on, he has had no choice but to play him really.

Bob

Skrtel paired with Sakho when Lovren was fit and fine sitting on the bench and that would continue through out.

Klopp preferes Skrtel as the RCB.

Why should he wait two mroe years, He is 30+ and has been playing for the cliub from 7 years.
This is his last contract imo.

He paired best with Agger, and a few seasons ago they were rated as the best defenive partnership in the league. They clicked, but he hasn't done so well with other pairings.

I'd go so far as to say a big part of Lovren's struggles last season because of Skrtel although we were just so poor going backwards it can't solely be that - BR was naive in defensive.

I was surprised the club negotiated on his new contract; I hope Illori get's his chance come January. I think Klopp is the kind of manager to bring him on. Back to Skrts - he is nearing the latter stages of his career, the club has to be looking to long term solutions.

Subotic?

Lovren was out for a montha from mid september and missed 7 games. Even then I'm not sure Lovren replaces Skrtel. As I don' think either have shown themselves over the last year or so to be reliable. Lovren is a left CB too. You can' really say Klopp prefers any one he's been in charge for about 5 games of which he's rotated the squad in Europe and been forced to play Skrtel as we have no other right centre back.

Like I say we will see where Skrtel is in 2 years. I;m saying 2 years, as I;m expecting that's the point when Klopp will have built the squad HE wants and he PREFERS.
