So Klopp has said he has 3 options for centre back. Kolo, Mama and then Lucas. Well that doesn't sound great for ilori.

The question was what senior CBs he had available, Ilori is only 22 and isn't fully fit.

11 Jan 2016 23:17:07
Well with Ilori short on match fitness it would probably be too much for him to start again.

Also it's a big game against Arsenal so to give him his premier league debut in these circumstances would be foolish.

Klopp is protecting him because if he plays against Arsenal and has poor game all these so called fans will turn on him and deem him to be unworthy of the shirt.

11 Jan 2016 23:21:43
Would you have expected him to play this game? 🤔

He was so lacking in match fitness he was spent after 60 mins against Exeter.
He's no going to have miraculously developed enough stamina to play a premier league match against the league leaders 5 days later.

11 Jan 2016 23:48:15
Natural, where is the news? Ilori isn't ready and even if he was, I wouldn't pick him for such a big game so again, where is the news?

11 Jan 2016 23:55:39
Plus he was terrible against Exeter. Too many people are turning a blind eye to that and making excuses for him because they don't want to believe that he just isn't stepping up to senior football like was expected. Great at U21's, poor against men.

He really needs to turn it up a level if he wants a future here. He was poor last year at Bordeaux, couldn't even get in Aston Villas team, and looked terrible against Exeter. He is 22. If that isn't considered a senior player, what is? 25? 27? He's a man now. Stop making excuses for him. His lack of fitness was his own fault. He should've been training harder whilst he was on loan. Maybe then he'd have got a game or even onto the bench.

Ems personally don't see him making it here but too say he was poor isn't good. The guy went too villa, had an injury when sherwood was trying him at dm. Then as he's getting his fitness back gets recalled, played with enrique at cb and only lasted 60m. Not too mention first game under klopp with new players. Always going to be hard.

12 Jan 2016 01:14:09
Have you played football before EMS? He will be fit, but fit n match fit are 2 different things, you only get match fit by playing games as it's hard to simulate in training.

12 Jan 2016 04:54:31
Lfc 1984, yes I have played. And it is easy to get match fit by training. I suffer a lot of injuries so I'm constantly having to get fit whilst away from the game. I don't have any fancy facilities or physios. I just go for 10 mile jogs and do 20metre shuttle runs for 15 minutes. It really isn't hard to get match fit. I think you're either confusing fitness with sharpness, or your just another Ilori sympathiser making excuses for him.

Tottenham players have regularly claimed their training is harder than a game. Because Poch pushes them. Ilori could've pushed himself if he was that bothered.

{Ed001's Note - no wonder you are always injured if you have that little clue about getting fit for a game. Jogging is bad for the knees. Doing that kind of training is barely keeping you ticking over let alone fit. You really do make yourself look silly at times with your know it all attitude, when you clearly know little about fitness. If you think that makes you match fit, then your knowledge of fitness is laughable.}

12 Jan 2016 07:42:25
And to follow on from what ed said, you are also comparing the fitness levels required wherever you play to those required in the Premier league. It's like comparing a toddler to Ussain Bolt. Sure, they can both run.

12 Jan 2016 07:50:40
Jogging may be bad for the knees, but I did a lot while I was in the army and give me very fit. Add some gym work, ie circuits and even swimming which will also make your lung capacity better as well as put less strain on your muscles. I had explosive power like Sturridge but never managed to suffer like him with injuries.
I used to be based in Cyprus and could play a full 90 mins in the afternoon heat having already done a PT session on the morning. In the army matches due to our high level of fitness all matches seemed to be played at 100mph so feel that at footballers should be a lot fitter. We did not have the benefit of a pre season. I was only a young whipper snapper then and 36 now, no longer in the forces so fitness stopped.

Baz.

{Ed001's Note - did you jog or run? Because jogging does not make you very fit at all, it barely makes you fit, whereas running makes you fit. There is a massive difference between the two.}

Surely Can would be a better option in defence than Lucas? Not ideal I know but at least he's had a good run in that position recently.

12 Jan 2016 08:53:49
My leg day consists of hill sprints, 5 sprts up with two jog backs. Cardio is flat running machine with 70M sprint busts and 5M walking rests.

12 Jan 2016 09:34:08
I'm always the most fit player on the team Ed. I don't know how to define the difference between jogging and running. But I suppose it's what most would consider running. My mates won't come with me because they can't keep up. I don't suffer from knee problems anyway. I have a long standing back problem due to the curvature of my spine and I have weak ankles. Never had any knee issues.

I'm not trying to act a know it all. I'm simply saying it is total BS to say you can't get match fit in training. Do Olympic runners play football to get fit seeing as it's the only way to hit your physical peak? No. Because that's not true. I may not be a fitness expert but I was great at athletics. I came 23rd in England in the national cross country for U16's, can still run 100m in 11.3 seconds etc. I'm not an expert but I know how to get fit. If you push yourself hard enough in training, matches are easy. I come back from torn ligaments fit enough to play 180 minutes because I work hard on my fitness. Which is why I am disgusted by pro-footballers getting excuses made for them. Maybe I am just not educated enough on the subject, but I don't see any reason why Ilori should've been more unfit than Enrique the other night, who looked 3 stone overweight.

{Ed001's Note - I really don't care about your fantasies about how superfit you are, there is a huge difference between being match fit in any sport and being fit. That is why you see trained UFC fighters suffering towards the end of their fights, no matter how hard they trained. You never heard of adrenaline dumping? Clearly you have never really competed at a high level or you would have been told all about it.}

Pre season for us used to involve a lot of repeat sprinting and itnerval training.

We'd have to do a 45 minute light jog once a week. (typically 6 km covered)

Sessions then involved activities such as sand dune sprints on the beach starting 10 m from the base of the dune running up it, back down
x10

Shuttle sprints (suicides) with 4 cones x5

3-2-1's Typically running at max for 3 minutes 1 minute rest, then 2 minutes 1 min rest etc. We'd repeat this 3 times.

Pitch circles. Sprint 1 length of pitch, wal 1 width, light jog 1 length, up tempon next width, Sprint length again. repeat until nauseous, usually 14 times

throw in cone work etc,1x3 sprints (sprint 30 rest 1min30) etc

We never ever jogged hard for long periods.

One of the hardest test I have ever done, was the yoyo tests which will allow you to see how fit you are compared to many elite atheletes. It tests your MUSCLE endurance, recovery, and VO2 max level

If you think you're an elite ahtelete I would download this and see how you fair (you won't come close)

For a reference most people can get to roughly levels 16-18 before dropping out in test 1 elite players will get to level 22

For test 2 most will drop out before level 20 only top top top atheletes will get above level 22

Give this test ago to see where you fit in, You will most likely pull out about level 17 and 19 respectively because your lungs are on fire.

I've never claimed to play football at a high level. Closest I got was trials at a league 2 team when I was a kid. During which I realised just how average I was! I've always been a better athlete than a player. So no I haven't heard of andrenaline dumping. But I still don't see how a professional sports man can be walking after 50 minutes.

{Ed001's Note - no, well quite clearly you have no expertise in this area.}
