Hello ed1. I've just read that john toshack has been taken to hospital, don't know what for but let's hope and pray he ok. Got me thinking about his managerial career and how successful he has been as a manger, managed real Madrid twice. Was he ever close to managing liverpool? Or interested in managing us?

{Ed001's Note - if I remember correctly he did say he was close on a couple of occasions but it was just never quite the right time. He was very underrated as a manager imo.}

Yeah I thought same. Surprised he never became liverpool manager.

He came close in 1982, when he was approached by John Smith and Peter Robinson. Swansea were pushing for the title and there was talk of Paisley stepping down at the end of the season. Liverpool went on a run and won the title and Swansea ended up in 6th. Paisley stopped and the potential job offer came to nothing. Toshack, apparently, lost some affection for Liverpool after that, though he was approached in 1998, when he was managing Besiktas, but he wasn't interested, so story goes.

He is in intensive care in a hospital in Barcelona, with pneumonia brought on by C.V.. Get well soon.

Not only an underrated manager but a great player for us as well. Keegan and Toshack - great partnership that took us on from Sir Roger and St John. He had the knack of looking like he was about to fall over then the ball was in the net; Origi has a little of that sometimes. Wishing Tosh a good recovery. YNWA.

I bet Keegan knew Toshack was ill before Toshack did.
Get well soon, Tosh.
