Reports salah will take 400k over 4 years so over 83m
I love the chap but that’s insane no joke I’d of sold him!
Opens the flood gates for players to want more and more now!
In a year and a half we could be looking another ozil situation?
Delighted he will stay if true but it’s a bit of a worry!

It’ll be ok Jay, we won’t be paying his wages, it will be the evil FSG empire.

05 Apr 2022 11:31:54
I get your sentiment, JDR, and I think a big increase in what the highest paid player receives can have a general inflationary effect, but I don't think this will lead to others coming forward and also demanding 400k. I think it's an exception for a player who is the best striker in the league and one of the best in the world.

I guess when a player is at this age/ stage, that is the risk that the club has to consider when negotiating a new contract. Of course, we don't know how the next few years will play out but Salah looks like a player that will go on into his mid 30s without too much drop off. I certainly don't see anything to suggest it's a comparable situation to Ozil, who tended to only turn up one match in four anyway.

I'm happy to leave the money and contracts to the relevant people and, if this does turn out to be true/ reliable information, rejoice in the fact that our front line will be Diaz, Jota and Salah for years to come.

Half of his wages could be subsidized by offloading Keita, Milner and OX.

Jay dub red - Other players may demand more money until they’re blue in the face, that doesn’t mean the club has to give it to them. Kimmich is one of Bayern’s best players yet was given a new contract on terms far reduced from Lewandowski. The world’s best players, specifically attackers, command premium salaries that might not necessarily mirror their absolute contribution to the team when compared with disparity in pay. Diaz may be able to do so in the future.
Fabinho, Alisson, Robertson, Trent, Virgil and Henderson all signed new contracts last summer, so will have little room to immediately negotiate higher salaries.
400k a week for a player of Salah’s calibre is not an excessive demand in modern day football.

The 83m is based on him staying for the length of his contract which imo, he wouldn’t.

I think he’d be here 1-2 years more but we would have the best player in their prime for a wage outlay of 41.6m (2 years) . Then I think he would move to get 1 last big contract I. e. a PSG, we would get some sort of transfer fee covering those 2 years he’s stuck around. And in that time we can hopefully replace Mane and complete the revolution of the attack. Buying us a bit more time.

Yes the wage seems insane but it’s only insane if he leaves on a free in 4 years time, and there would always be a market for salah in the future, look at Ronaldo as an example.

05 Apr 2022 12:21:13
let's just not forget that Salah signing an extension doesn't guarantee that he'll see it out.

It is a commitment on both sides with improved terms for Salah.

If he does sign, I really do hope he goes on to become our version of Messi/ Ronaldo in his prime.

05 Apr 2022 12:24:47
On this, sky sports are reporting Salah is “close” to agreeing.

Has something changed for that? I’m sure klopp said weeks ago that the deal was in mo’s hands to sign?

🤙.

Simply put we can't sign a elite level player for fee and wages at a similar price. He deserves what the club is ready to pay via his performances. Its a bargain in this age. May be 2 years from now he wants to leave the club will get a fee. All good.

05 Apr 2022 12:43:39
WYred - I don't think it's insane even if he does leave on a free in four years time. We'll have had another four years of Salah's brilliance for a total outlay of a further £83m. Yes, it sounds like an eye watering amount of money but if Salah were to leave us this summer and assuming we'd look for some sort of replacement, how much would that cost us? There would be a significant transfer fee to start with, something we don't have to consider by extending Salah's contract, and then let's assume something in the region of £200k a week for the calibre of player we'd be looking for.

For example, what is Diaz going to cost over four years? Transfer fee + add ons + salary for four years. Probably more than £83m isn't it?

Much of this debate assumes that Salah will, like Messi and Ronaldo, continue to maintain very high levels of performance well into his thirties. If he does manage that, then £83m for four years of 20+ goals and 10 assists every season is, in Premier League football terms, a decent return on investment in my opinion.

05 Apr 2022 12:55:30
Give him the 400k. get a smile back on his face and let's go. And who else deserves that in the team? If they come knocking on klopps door for same or more. he should tell them to become the best in the world. Salah is class and deserves every penny for me.

05 Apr 2022 12:59:30
Gents £83mill is a lot but let’s not forget he’s our best player. Who would replace him and at what cost? You need to pay £50-60 mill at least to sign someone then you have wages, fees etc over the term of their contract. £83mill to keep the best player on the planet is a steal if you ask me!

05 Apr 2022 13:03:54
Our current highest 5 paid players are

Salah
Vvd
Thiago
Bobby
Hendo.

Apart from Vvd I can’t see the other 3 in a position age / ability / importance wise to demand the same money that Salah has been offered.

05 Apr 2022 13:28:56
WYred you raise a good point. We can also see this as FSG protecting the value of their most prized asset. I too don't see Salah staying for the full length or getting a new Contract after this one (if he signs), so you would think if he does leave we will avoid the circus of him leaving on a free.

05 Apr 2022 13:47:40
Also, just to counter the argument that we would spend more to replace him, Salah cost LFC roughly £35m in transfer fee (according to reports) for what is now arguably the best player in the world, so don't assume we would have to spend big to replace him.

05 Apr 2022 14:35:37
stuie-boy - I think the point is that it would cost pretty close to £83m in transfer fee + salary over the term of a contract to replace Salah, even if we could somehow find a player at his level for £35m, so isn't the £83m better spent retaining the services of one of the best players in the world who we already know will score more goals than any/ most other players every season?

Even ignoring transfer market inflation in the five years since we signed Salah, let's take that £35m you mention and then add a four or five year contract for a new signing at £200k per week. It's about the same total outlay as keeping our proven world class striker, but comes with the significant risk that a new £35m signing won't be able to deliver at the level that Salah does - i. e we spend the same amount of money for less return. I'd take the option of keeping Salah every time over trying to unearth another gem for £35m. And in reality, £35m five years ago would equate to a bit more now.

Unrelated really, but every time I see the number 35, I get a chill down my spine thinking about the money the club spent on Andy Carroll.

05 Apr 2022 16:20:38
I'm totally against giving Salah this kind of money. Take away his pens and he's not much more prolific than Jota or Mane. Like the club to stand firm.

05 Apr 2022 16:21:33
I agree with the overall statement, but just wanted to point out that what you're saying is all subjective, as in reality we could find a player who costs less than £35m or even an academy prospect could come out of nowhere, as unlikely as it is. Also, your weekly wage is inflated in my opinion as a £35m player likely wouldn't command a £200,000 p/ w salary, certainly not at LFC. Luis Diaz is reportedly on cicra £60,000 p/ w. But as someone mentioned earlier, it isn't my money so in the grand scheme of things, I don't really care what they spend it on. as long as it isn't Andy Carroll!

06 Apr 2022 16:30:01
Stuie Boy who could we get though for "cheap" who would be good enough to instantly replace him for less than £60 Mill plus? Then add on Agent fees, Signing on fees, wages, bonuses and lest not forget they would probably demand wages of 200k plus a week based on the cost to sign them then keeping someone who is currently the best in the world, is going to get to his peak soon, and is well established in the team is a no brainer.

What happens if we sign a salah replacement and he folds under the pressure? Or doesn't settle etc i. e another Keita then we spend again to replace them to then have all the issues that may crop up again and the whole while we digress as a team?

Keep salah at all costs.
