Hi Ed1 this one is an awkward question I feel so forgive me but of Germany's great midfielders past and present (including but not limited to Ballack, Schweinsteiger, Kroos Hitzlberger just for his shot) which one do you think our Emre Can resembles the most? Cheers mate and have a good day.

{Ed001's Note - none, he is not really like any of them, in my opinion.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Highly unlikely he will reach the heights of the midfielders you listed above. But still has the potential to be a good player for us. Not world class but a handy and versatile midfielder is what I would call Can.

03 Apr 2017 12:13:12
The boy isn't called Emre Zidane for nothing lol XD.

03 Apr 2017 14:07:14
Not saying he is anywhere near as good but he kind of reminds me of Viera in terms of his playing style. He likes to drive forward from deep, loves a physical battle and marries technical ability with tenacity. Hopefully he develops into even just half the player!

03 Apr 2017 15:49:07
I don't want him to be like any of those players, personally. I want him to be the best he can be for himself and for us based on the qualities he has. That's it. Comparing him to other players is pointless and futile.

03 Apr 2017 15:50:25
I agree with buzzer, certain players have caps and his doesn't reach world class like the players you listed above. Decent player but needs to improve vast areas of his game if we are to put him ahead of any of our starting midfielders. Hendo, Lallana and wiji is still our best trio. Can form has improved of late which is a refreshing sight though after what was a bad season for him before.

03 Apr 2017 16:24:11
He doesn't have the composure of Vieira.

Had a good game at the weekend though 👏.

03 Apr 2017 16:56:37
One swallow does not make a summer.

One game will not make him a world beater. He has got plenty of opportunities here and hope he improves his game. If not here somewhere else.

Plz don't compare him to Zidane.

Cheers.

Can still only 23. End of last season before he got injured he was unstoppable. His recent form is once again showing that he can become a mainstay in the first team. What I like about Can is he is not a weakling on the pitch. Put him in La Liga and many players will try avoid being near him on the pitch. He has shown that he is a match for EPL football. He may still have inconsistencies but he can become a pretty damn good all round midfielder for us.

{Ed025's Note - bang average if you ask me max, limited passing range, gives the ball away too often ans rolls around like a big baby if he gets tackled, his improved form is down to his contract renewal and once he gets what he wants then i expect him to revert to the mediocre player he is..

03 Apr 2017 17:30:44
Rolls around like a baby when that filthy bugger Barkley was intent on breaking Can's leg along with destroying Lovren's ankle? Come on mate. Can is a pretty hard player. I have watched all the matches he has played and not the same player you are referring too.

You can keep Gareth Barry mate.

{Ed025's Note - im not defending barkley max he made some terrible challenges, but can rolled around like he had been shot then leapt to his feet like a ballerina 2 minutes later..horrible player..

03 Apr 2017 17:37:55
Yeah I know what you mean Ron. Viera had that ferocity but always looked in control. He had made the driving runs, but seemed to glide forward rather than scamper forward.

Viera was everything Can should be aspiring to be, as Can has all the tools to be that breed of midfielder. Agree though, composure is one of the main things that sets them apart. Luckily it is also something which can be gained through experience and age.

03 Apr 2017 19:26:59
Vieira was NOT the finished article at 23 either so don't know why he's being compared to Can. Can has his own talents and qualities (different to those of the players mentioned) and should be judged on them alone and not compared to players who are different to him who also cannot do the things that he can do. Give the kid time to develop, please.

Ed025, blaming the victim, I see. Can was brutalized by both Barkley and Williams so the idea of you slating him for rolling around like a cry baby sounds a bit bitter, IMO.

How about you save your criticism and ire for the thugs I mentioned above who were simply not interested in playing football cos they were getting hammered in every dept. of the game, including tactically as the comments of your hypocritical manager suggests.

{Ed025's Note - i am not defending barkley or williams Nred i have admitted that lots of times, can is the type of player who epitomizes everything that is wrong with modern day footballers..average but believes he is better, holding the club to ransom over pay negotiations..and a big tart..

Put him infront of David Silva and he will be taught a good footballing lesson that you don't need physique to skip pass a player. Can has no discipline to play the deeper role and hence Klopp went to the veteran Lucas to baby sit him. Can is like a Micah Richards in the midfield, use your upper body to penetrate! You need a lot more than that to become a CM.

03 Apr 2017 22:40:26
Harry, you must have been under a rock when we played City two weeks ago with Can being in front of David Silva and Can was the one who taught Silva a lesson as he dominated midfield alongside Wij and Wijnaldum so sorry, you are wrong. Can bullied their midfield and they could not live with his pace, power and athleticism and by the way, he is quite skillful with the ball at his feet.

03 Apr 2017 22:49:41
Harry whilst it is true that Can is not disciplined enough (yet) to play an anchor role (and may never be), it is worth noting that some of the best players in his mould had similar issues.

Look at Viera who always needed Gilberto to cover his forward runs. Toure at City who needed Barry/ Fernadinho to do all his defensive work. Gerrard who needed Alonso and Masch to mop up his mistakes. All midfielders who loved to get at the opposition teams, and also loved a physical battle. Every single one of them needed a more disciplined anchor man alongside them. Emre Can is no different, but that doesn't mean he has no place in our side.

As Ed001 has said, he was wanted by B. Munich but chose us for more playing time. He is now refusing to sign a new deal without the promise of playing time - surely that is the kind of player you want though? A guy who wants to be out there every game. Klopp tried to sub him on Saturday due to a minor injury and Can effectively said "no" because he isn't here to shy away from a battle and earn easy money. He is actually becoming the exact kind of character our midfield misses at times. I have seen him grow massively these last few months.

Before Xmas I would not have batted an eyelid at him leaving. Whilst I am still skeptical about him playing the anchor role in our midfield, I have absolutely no qualms anymore with him playing in the side. Needing a more defensive/ disciplined player alongside has not gone against former great players, so why should it go against Can? Afraid to admit it, but I am actually growing to like his unpredictability!

04 Apr 2017 03:02:21
Emre Can reminds me of Van Bommel, from his shots, to his runs and aggression in the way he plays and also towards the opposition.

04 Apr 2017 11:39:41
Can has no positional discipline MK. I know it. You know it, The Editors know it and I am pretty fine with the other 60 million pretending against it.
You don't need a big gigantic hulk physique to dominate a midfield. Luka Modric is a living example!

Can use his upper body to dominate the field unlike his feet or brains to pick the player in those little pockets of the field or an empty space where there are no pressure on the player.

His almost all two footed challenges will one day give him a big ban from the game. He got away with plenty of rash challenges.

Put in him Spain and the referees will have no time in giving him marching orders!

04 Apr 2017 19:09:17
Can is the only player we have who has genuine aggression and is up for a scrap when the opposition get physical. Yes he makes mistakes, who doesn't, but by playing regularly the mistakes are getting less frequent and he is improving as he finds his form and consistency.

I said it before and I'll say it again, he is a talented lad who is only 23 and still learning his trade. If we don't tie him down to a new contract we will be kicking ourselves when he moves elsewhere, plays regularly and we see how wrong we were to let him go, there's a reason why Bayern and Juve are interested!
