When was the last time Liverpool signed a wonderkid, Not a potential wonderkid for the academy or reserves but a seventeen year old who went straight into the first team. like rooney did at utd?
I genuinely can't remember the last one.

You could say Joe Gomez, hope the injury hasn't set him back too much.

I would agree with HX in that Gomez is the only recent one I can remember. Back in the day, we used to buy them young (Rush from Chester being an example) but players were more willing to learn their craft for a year or two in the reserves and that's what used to happen.
Going back to the 1990s, Rob Jones could fall into that category. He was 19 when he signed for us from Crewe (albeit only for another month before turning 20!) and was thrown straight into the first time - within 48 hours of signing! He didn't turn out to be too bad!

Joe Gomez 😂 He's talking about players like a young Torres or aguero, silva, someone who was already doing great things while he was still available to be bought by us but that everyone wants. Joe Gomez is a good talent but he's not even close to the original posters idea. Coutinho is probably the closest we've got much was expected of him although he wasn't showing it too often. Then you're looking at someone like Origi he was 18 and playing for Belgium in the the World Cup ahead of lukaku at the time and benteke was injured and scoring goals when we signed him again much was expected he hasn't quite delivered yet but he's still only 21.

Which rooney is this?

Martyn Rooney, the 400m runner, I think?

When was Joe Gomez ever a wonder kid? People should stop buttering him up cos you are setting him up to be slaughtered due to unwanted expectations being put on his young, inexperienced shoulders.
He is still yet to play CB consistently for us to be judged, injury or not. I suggest people stop bigging him up cos like it or not, he will make mistakes and with the way Karius was obliterated by his own fans cos he made two mistakes, I fear he will get the same treatment from such people.

Sterling was pretty close I suppose. How many "wonderkids" are there anyway?
13 Apr 2017 16:49:07
Got to agree N Red, Gomez was never a 'wonderkid', just a lad with decent potential. Let's not load the lads shoulders with unnecessary or unrealistic expectations.
Ron, no doubt Sterling was considered a 'wonderkid' and it was a real coup to get him. If I recall, the QPR youth team was referred to as Raheem Park Rangers due to his relative talent at that age. He'd be our most recent 'wonderkid' purchase, I'd say.
What I'd give to sign someone comparable to Rushie, who'd be prepared to learn his trade in the reserves for a year or so and then give half of what he gave on the pitch. We'd get CL football every year with men of Rushie's calibrate breaking into the side. True Liverpool legend.

Not many, Ron.

Completely agree, GMac.
Ron, I think the OP was after someone who came straight into first team. Sterling was a wonderkid, but joined in his early to mid-teens into the youth/ reserves team. I remember when he scored 5 goals in a game for the U-18s a few years back when he was 15, from memory.
Agree Gomez still has a lot to prove, but he did come in and seemed to be successfully holding down a 1st team spot before his horrible injury.

Shelvey went straight to the first team, was better than Henderson back then.
