People banging on about transfer fees being too high for players. so what? Who cares? That's how it is. The vasts amount of money in the top end of the game drives the market. We should me more concerned whether a potential transfer target will improve lfc and help us win the league and champions league. We all want success after all. Our defence is poor, we all know that. That should be our priority. Will vvd improve the squad and help us win the league? Yeah, he's a beast. Let's pay up and move on to securing a quality left back. It's time to start winning again.

The problem is if you skip this window without addressing those key positions then the same player linked linkrd becomes £50 mill next year. I would have loved the club to sort out the full backs and midfield position by now.

The window hasn't open. Chill, Winston.

Yep, get all transfers sorted before the transfer window opens. More wonderful logic.

You're right. Pay whatever they ask for. That'll be good in the long term.

Getting transfers as sorted a second you can before the window opens sounds like a very good idea. That way you don't get the stress, less likely to get into silly bidding wars and more likely to not end up panic buying.

Whilst the window isn't open yet (we have this same discussion every summer in June as its a bit of a dead period! ), being able to secure a deal (agreement with both player and club ready for ratification once the window is open) can only be a good thing.

Reaper's main point is not "pay whatever they ask" but instead pay a fee commensurate with the current market. £60m for a CB 5 years ago? Crazy! I remember when Rio moved for £30m and how we were laughing at the Mancs at overpaying. However, they got 10+ years service out of a very reliable, quick and intelligent (game intelligence, anyway! ) defender on which to build their repeated success.

If Klopp reckons VVD is the man to give that solidity at the back, and we have our direct competitors willing to pay the exorbitant fee (thereby giving some credence to the price) then we should go for it and move on to our next target.

Could we get cheaper on the continent? Maybe, but we're likely, in this market, still be talking about £30-£40m for someone like Jonathan Tah (who I am a big fan of BTW! ), who has no PL experience, so is more of a risk than someone who already has it (and BTW seems very motivated to play for the club, a big plus in my book! ) .

Don't get me wrong, I would love for Gomez, for example, to get the chance to grow into the role, but we have been talking about potential for a long time now, and I would like to get a smattering of starters in the team now!

Ideal scenario for me, if (and only if) Klopp doesn't see Lovren as a guaranteed starter, is to buy an upgrade on him (like VVD for example), sell Lovren (along with Sakho) to give him the first team opportunities in what should be the prime of his career) and allow the path for Gomez to develop into a first team player, with cup runs, some PL games and U23. We will still have Klavan as a back up too, alongside Lucas if he stays (I really would like him to! ) .

Anyway, just my view, but I do get Reaper's main point which is that we fans should worry less about the money (as Ed002 constantly points out, its complicated), trust the management in the club that they are looking after that, and look only to which players will make us a better team.

Hear endeth the sermon, lol!

When it comes to having a solid defence, your centre backs are more important than your fullbacks. LB was only a bigger priority because our actual options there are bare. So yes, Liverpool planned on plugging that hole first, but when a centre back that the manager really admires suddenly flings himself at the club to be signed, plans obviously need to change. I'd rather a defence with strong centre backs and weak fullbacks than a defence with weak centre backs and strong fullbacks.

By the time window gets opened the good players would have swapped clubs already.

I agree with the comment about paying what is needed to get the player you need, in the right circumstances.
Now is the time to buy players who are good enough to improve what is already a good team. To do that will involve paying more than market value as that's what has become the norm for those at the top of English footy. So if we want to stay there then we will have to do the same.
Utd paid 89 million for potential last year so how much would they pay for the real deal? And they accepted mid table and a couple of mickey mouse trophies! That's what we are competing against if we are not to return to their level!
