To break away from the usual banter.

Just seen a piece on Sami Hyypia on lfctv. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE PLAYER!

And he cost 2mil - wrap your heads around that?!

Stephane Henchoz was one hell of a player too. Back four of babbel, Sami, henchoz and carra - not sure we'll see a back 4 as solid as that again for quite some time.

{Ed025's Note - great player 87, if he was playing today he would be worth £70m, mind you liverpool would probably offer £10m.. :)

Agree6 Disagree0

And end up paying 100m.

Henchoz wasn't great mate. Hypia was fantastic though. I was in the kop at his last game. We haven't replaced him yet. Although matip looks good so far.

Isn't it rumoured he was signed after a fan recommended him in a pub?

Sami was excellent but he was also slow which means the system arafa played suited him. He would be brutally exposed under Klopp!

05 Jul 2017 12:36:32
Wrong ed025, the club would first try to tap him up and once when they are successful would bid £10m to piss everyone off!

{Ed025's Note - i forgot about that shayan.. :)

Harry, if hyypia was still playing you'd be moaning why klopp hadn't paid 60 mil to sort out the defensive issues!

What a fantastic set of names. When you compare them to our current line-up, it's depressing lol.

Koeman and John Terry were slow but made up for it due to there excellent positional awareness. I recall koeman saying he would be disappointed if he had to make a slide tackle as he would be wrong positionally.

Pace is Harry.

It's helpful but not a necessity if you know where to stand and read the game well.

Pace gets you out of trouble when you're caught out of position.

CB's with a footballing brain, tactical intelligence, great anticipation and awareness are now a dying (if not a dead) breed. Players like Hyppia, Maldini, Henchoz, Babbel, Stefan Helmer, Jeurgen Kholer, Laurent Blanc and the list goes on, would lay waste to the CB's of today as these guys were not just great CB's, they were literally coaches on the pitch, doing all the organizing so the coach did not have to do much as these players were the extension of their managers.

I've always said it. If you're a very good centre half, you don't need pace.
