So what's the learned view on Emanuel Mammana?
I'm not a frequent Ligue 1 watcher so I wondered what people think about him.
I think he looks quick, has good timing and is very composed on the ball. He seems to like to slide tackle and I worry he could come a cropper doing this.
I actually think he could form a good partnership with Matip because they compliment each other. For 15m he could be a revelation.
What's everyone's opinion?

As good as VVD? If so snap him up.
06 Jul 2017 23:55:37
How solid is the info that we are genuinely interested Ron, EDs?
07 Jul 2017 00:03:43
I think he's worth a go mate, I don't expect him to be exceptional but might be an improvement to what we currently have. I can't say I've seen loads of him but from what I have seen, yeah not bad, but as you well know the premier league is totally different, something is telling me he won't be able to handle it but we'll see and should he sign I wish him the best of luck. He could prove to be an absolute bargain, be all and end all I trust Klopp.

i admit i haven't seen him play at all. but i will be very nerves if i see a 18? 19? years old stand beside matip. he may turn out to be a good player in the future but every error he makes will probably cost us points.

First of all, I have not had the opportunity to watch too much European football lately, but I did watch him twice last season, and from what I can remember: overcommitts, tries to slide in way to much, comfortable on the ball but not as fast as people think. He is also not the biggest guy and I think he would initially struggle to adapt in the PL, and as such I don't see him as any more ready for the PL than Joe Gomez.

Sebastian Coates version 2.0.
07 Jul 2017 06:40:20
Interesting stuff guys.
He looks quick playing in France where they seem to have a lot of quick forwards.
I think he'd compliment Matip and for £15m I'd sign him up and let Klavan go.

There is a lot I like about him, but also a lot I don't like at the same time.
Not seen too much of him but from what I did see, some of the (slide) tackles he does, which is nearly all he does, I do not think he would get away with being so rash in the prem and constantly being on his arse is bad too specially if he misses the tackle and has to get up and track back.
But, he seems to have a decent amount of pace, his positioning is great (not always) but what I like the most is his passing to be honest.
I know long balls aren't really the type of game we play much of now, BUT his vision to switch play and get the ball at a teammates toe (moving or stationary) IMO reminds me of Gerrard. And his ability to switch play out of nowhere and open up a acre of space, is something we really miss.
Plus we have much faster wingers/ forwards than what Gerrard was delivering too so might work out even better :)
07 Jul 2017 06:49:29
Also to add (sorry forgot about it)
He seems to give away a LOT of corners (and with the strictness of the prem referees, a lot of free kicks) .
Corners and set pieces are not our thing and he won’t be the answer to defending them at all.
07 Jul 2017 07:04:35
I begrudgingly watched the Europa league final and I liked the look of Davidson Sanchez.
Think he'd suit our style of play, having the pace to cover on the counter when our full backs become wingers.
If we were looking to bid for raw talent to nurture he looked like he could be an interesting choice.
Ed1 talks highly of Christiansen so maybe another alternative
Not seen enough of Mamanna, in fact nothing bar YouTube compilation but he does go to ground a lot on there as Ron says.
{Ed001's Note - why do you rate Davinson Sanchez? The lad was the one who constantly turned over the ball making stupid errors that then he was forced to make needless tackles to recover the ball from. He was bloody awful in that game. He tries far too hard to play the ball, when the moment is wrong. Another Stones, though a better version, not by much.}
07 Jul 2017 07:09:12
One player isn't going to sort our corner and set piece issues in any event Phil.
They could change the defence every year but until it is drilled into them to concentrate and take individual responsibility then nothing will change. We have too few voices in the team reminded the others of that.
07 Jul 2017 07:29:15
Indeed Ron, he's definitely an improvement on Klaven in my opinion and at 15m we'd be daft not to buy him.
07 Jul 2017 07:30:51
Id get Hyypia in as a def coach as a start.
07 Jul 2017 07:55:14
I've watched a fair bit of ligue 1 (usually out of interest of weekend betting), personally I don't think he's up to the premier league. He's a bit short for a centre half and doesn't win that many headers, he's quite quick and decent on the ball, but he's not physically imposing and does get knocked off the ball quite easily, so I can't see him winning a tussle with someone like Lukaku for example. Personally I'm not convinced and whereas he'd be ok in Spain or France, he'd probably fail here.
07 Jul 2017 08:13:15
I would stay away from him. Why? Many in the french media were shocked that LFC allegedly put in a bid for him cos according to them and Lyon's followers, he is not good enough and did not show that much ability in the several games he did play in. Moral of the story? I would stay away even tho, I have not seen him play. BTW, why are we signing another rookie whereas we have Gomez chumping at the bit to get game time and since, Klavan is going nowhere (he would be the one I would sell)?
07 Jul 2017 08:20:17
Ed001 is bang on about Sanchez, he's woeful. I'd love us to throw half of what the price of VVD is at Chelsea for Andreas Christensen. Now he is the real deal, quick, good in the air and a good footballer. Physically strong, reminds me of Agger, minus the injuries.
07 Jul 2017 08:38:36
Christensen i agree with, but could you really see them selling to us? because I cant.
07 Jul 2017 09:41:53
I'll bow to your better judgement re Sanchez ed1.
I know you like Christensen. Anyone else at CB you think that's available we should go after and would be attainable?
{Ed001's Note - I was talking about that one match mate, I was wondering what you saw in Sanchez in that game to make you rate him?
As for others, no, I would go all out to get Christensen personally.}
07 Jul 2017 10:06:50
Ah right. Sorry my misunderstanding.
In that game I remember watching it, thinking that the cbs were being repeatedly exposed by Ajax pushing high, going nowhere and then Man Utd pumping it long or getting it forward quickly and Sanchez seemed to be the one snuffing out the danger.
He seemed to do this by being quick over the ground and combative.
I just thought that the way we played he would be interesting. I'll potentially get slated here but here goes, he reminded me a bit of Varane.
I'd be lying if I said I remember his distribution. I don't remember being impressed or otherwise with his work on the ball on the night.
Thanks for going easy on me!
{Ed001's Note - as I remember it, Ajax were exposed because he farted around on the ball and allowed himself and his options to be closed down. The pushing up high and winning it back, I agree he often did, but he was the one presenting it back to them and giving them the opportunity most of the time, imo.}
07 Jul 2017 10:31:43
thanks Ed
Just read a few write ups of the game to jog my memory and they encapsulate a lot of what you say
They acknowledge he made a few mistakes, one back pass which almost put rashford in and his distribution was a little erratic at times but also praise his defensive work, citing a goal saving challenge on rashford as one example.
What is it you like about Christensen?
{Ed001's Note - I like that Christensen doesn't make those silly errors on the ball very often. I like that he defends first and foremost. Good on the ball but not stupid like a Stones or Sanchez.}
07 Jul 2017 10:42:21
Interesting Ed. Thanks.
But we've not scouted Christensen as far as you're aware?
{Ed001's Note - not that I know of particularly, though Klopp and his staff do talk a lot to people in the Bundesliga about players and how they are getting on, as well as watching games. However I do not expect any interest to materialise in him sadly.}
07 Jul 2017 10:52:28
I think Chelsea are the sort of club that if the offer is right, they'll sell. Ed002 has said countless times that they don't wrap themselves up in this 'I won't sell to them' nonsense. I'd offer them £35m and see what they said.
07 Jul 2017 11:11:44
Davinson Sanchez is a headless chicken.
If we were looking at a CB from Ajax then I would hope it would be Jairo Riedewald.
But we are looking at neither.
07 Jul 2017 14:12:47
I like the cut of Mammana's jib.
To me he is like a quicker Carragher who can pass better.
He's not tall, but winning challenges in the air is as much to do with timing, positioning and leap, as it is height. Just ask Tim Cahill and Jon Walters if you don't believe me.
He's not a big unit but I've never seen him knocked off the ball and he's an Argie. We all know Argies are the "street fighters" of football and enjoy a physical battle.
As for rash challenges. I go to a lot of home matches and half the time our problem is we are too hesitant. We don't challenge the man in possession and we let them run at us and then we panic. We need someone who will put challenges in!
I also think central defenders are about partnerships and Matip has the qualities Mammana lacks and vice-versa.
Get him signed Jurgen!
