i keep seeing people saying how we barely scraped 4th last year but for me it's a false perception.

if you take it at face value, we made it by a point or so, which would appear "scraping through"

the reality is that our points total last year would have in seasons gone by been easily enough to secure top 4 without any "scraping through".

the league is now in a place where 6 teams can geniunely win the title year in year out so the gap between 4th to 6th will always be a lot shorter.

this in my opinion created a false impression.

the afcon and injuries to key players without suitable back ups is what nailed us last season.

with better squad depth (i. e. having mane AND salah means we should pretty much always have that devastating pace that opens up teams) .

hopefully hendo will be much less plagued by injury. people also underestimate the value of having a team not too dissimilar from last year who are another year experienced and better used to playing with one another - spurs being a key example of this.

Great post mate!

We did barely scrape through, it came down to the last game of the season, the reason being the mid season collapse. I still don't think we are well equipped for the season ahead. Failing to prepare means that you should prepare to fail.

thank you for completely ignoring the core point of my post around perception vs reality.

if we won the title on 91 points on the last day of the season and 2nd finished on 90 points - would that be just scraping it? or would it be 2 teams who took it down to the wire with equal ability on the pitch?

Your original post was really good.

However your second was like throwing a ball against a wall, if any friends fans are around in Joey's words "it was a moo point"

I think my point is that it seemed like we made it to fourth in "limp home mode" and really were relying on Arsenal slipping up for most of it, so really I think it was both ours and Arsenals equal ability at contriving to be awful at times that made it what it was. Obviously, had we won the league by one point over United, I wouldn't at all be saying that we scraped home, but that it was a glorious victory. As you say, its a matter of perception!

Do you have to see the negative in everything Frankly? If you get 4th spot by a point or ten points you still get 4th spot.

09 Aug 2017 13:24:35
Frankly, the fact that we finished 2 points behind City last season saw us in "limp home mode"?

I guess that can be compared to City having ordered wheelchairs for their players and using them on the pitch knowing that we were depending on Arsenal to mess up.

What exactly is wrong with you?

Glass is always half empty Welsh. But that is because I am a realist.

87 your bang on. A horse winning a race by a hand wins the race, end of.

No, you're very much a pessimist.

Reads more like 90% empty to most of us. But it's fine. I just look at the 10%.

If you think we barely scraped 4th then you are deluding yourself. We were never even nailed on to finish 5th at the start of the season and in fact, the pundits had us battling Neverton for 6th so we did not finish 4th by scraping it. We were better than Arsenal and Everton (did the double over them) and way better than Utd while finishing 3 points off City who spent double what we spent. We deserved 4th and that is that.

Max

That is why City are Strengthening. By last year's logic why would Chelsea buy any player? They walked away with the league. Didn't they?
Coutinho alone wouldn't get us the league but good enough for a CL spot which wouldn't enough again for elite players!
