I touched on it briefly on the live chat today, but for defending set pieces why don't we leave mane and salah (or which ever pacey forwards we have on the halfway line) teams would then have to leave a few players to protect against the break. This would leave the box less congested for our defenders to clear it, as more often than not it just becomes a massive game of pinball. One which usually ends with the ball going into our net.

Another issue we have is because every man and his dog knows we can't defend every issue is highlighted and put under a microscope, you can see the players look uncomfortable. Only way to fix this is a leader who will bark and organise the defence mid game.

Be interested to hear other people's thoughts on how we improve our defending as scoring doesn't look like it'll be an issue.

we should have brought in a Leader in Ben Gibson, big strong centre back who is very much a leader, cost about 25 million, the way its panning out, we will be left with a back four, conceding fifty goals again, VVD will not be coming to us, Chelsea will offer big money and get him . leaving us very weak in defence, matip and lovren simply not good enough .

This has been a problem that stretches back to before Rodgers.

We bring everyone back for set pieces meaning that the attacking team can overload our box and cause confusion.

Like you say if we left 2 or even 3 players forwards at every corner they would have to drop players back and our defenders would have more space in the box to control the attacking players.

This isn't a Klopp problem or a player problem, this has been a Liverpool problem for years.

Benitez was the last manager to leave players forward at set pieces because he trusted Pepe to find Torres with accuracy for a quick break. Perhaps if we had a GK who could distribute Klopp would be more inclined to leave players forward.

The thing is i think we need to practice defending them more, but how can we?

We need somebody in training who can whip in a good ball for our defenders to practice against, but none of our players can put in a good delivery. Klopp probably thinks we are great at defending set pieces because he has Milner and Hendo floating them in during training.

I agree. Never understand everyone being back to defend a set play, as it then means that even if ball is cleared, it almost certainly will be picked up by opposing team and put straight back in! I always leave one smaller quick player 30 yards out and other on halfway. Thus meaning teams then leave 3 often 4 players back incase of counter.

Agree completely. Should have been rapid on the counter after set pieces today with Mane and Salah but it didn't really happen.

Think we need a Jamie Carragher type back who will scream orders and scare the s*** out of our players if they do wrong!

Do think making a decision on the keeper will be beneficial, Migs has done okay but not much better than that if we're honest. I'd like if Klopp just spoke to Ward and said you're No 1, now hold onto it. We need a change in goal and equally a keeper who isn't afraid to scream and shout! Reina was a real captain in goal and we miss that I think.

Not as easy as you say to "bring in a leader", that player might be right at home barking orders to his team mates for a club he's been at for a while, or a club in the lower half of the prem, will they still be barking them orders at brand new team mates for a club as huge as Liverpool, full of international superstars, where as you say will be right under the microscope?
Not an easy fix at all.

Agree with principle redforever, but Gibson?

He's not a leader, not of a premier league football team.

Mk in training you can replicate corners, either by coaches just kicking the ball from the edge of the box or even throwing it in, yes it isn't like for like, but training is about learning to situations that you can adapt to matchday.

I don't agree on Gibson either a good defender but not one that would improve our back line.

A leader is a natural attribute and something difficult to learn, but that is what the scouting department is for to search for that attribute within a defender.

Absolutely spot on Red Dawn. There needs to be a quick player or two left up near the halfway line ready to break quickly. And if out goalie can't throw/ kick that accurately then he should damn well learn for the money they are on. That would help stop the penalty box ping pong that we seem to always lose out to, and might get us a few goals too.

Completely agree with onceared seems pointless having all eleven in the box allows attacking side to send all but 1 or 2 forward and us with no attacking options.

We should of tried to sign Emanuel Mammana.

We're too nice as a team. Not aggressive enough with our defending, and our centre halfs get bullied far too often.
