Ed001 straight question what is the point of holding on to a player if he want's to go?

{Ed001's Note - because he makes the team better.}

OP, What is the point in accepting a pathetic, low-balling offer for a very important player that makes you better esp. when you don't need to sell nor need the money and there are no ready replacements in sight?

He absolutely makes the team better. Best playmaker in Europe.

What is the point of knuckling down to the Barcelona mafia and becoming their feeder club?
Are u a closet Barcelona fan by any chance?

It's just I always felt it was best to let a player go if he doesn't want to play for the club get the best price you can for him and move on. Yes I perfectly understated that Couthino wound be a massive loss but what if he spit's the dummy and becomes a disruption in the dressing room? Although I really don't believe he is that type of person.

He came back from injury last season and it took him 6 wks to start playing well. If he starts the same after his recent back injury, some fans are going to rip him and say he's not putting it all in.
I just think the best option is to let him leave.

No closet saints fan.

There is a valid point about an unhappy player disrupting the dressing room, Barry, and keeping one is always some degree of a gamble. Maybe if this had happened earlier in the window and Barcelona's offer wasn't so spread out over time with performances bonuses, we might have let him go.

But with the offer they're making and it being so late in the window, the club know that it'll be hard to strengthen the team with the income we get for selling Coutinho. Any club we want to buy from will know we're under pressure and will hold out for more money in an already silly transfer window. On the other hand it's a World Cup year, and PipCo signed a 5 year deal 6 months ago. If he's still here on September 2nd, he basically has no choice but to knuckle down and play whether he's particularly happy about it or not. So for me, it's far better for us to stand our ground and refuse to sell at this stage.

If they offered a straight £130m+ up front, then it might be another conversation.

if I was coutinho I'd be pissed at Barcelona for ****ing about. doesn't seem they're so desperate for him with the pathetic bids they're making.

Also Barcelona's approach reminds me of when we got £30m up front for Alonso and then paid Roma for Aquilani over 5 years, and part of his fee was written off against the last couple of installments owed on Riise.

At least we had the excuse of being flat broke and owned by literal cowboys.

I totally agree about the structure of the fee it is BS to be honest.
