only ourselves to blame! Henderson missing an open goal summed it up for me, too many second rate players giving the ball away too many times, we could have been 2 up only for the superb goalkeeping, but that's his job! it's all well and good stopping the other team from playing but you still have to score. on to the next disappoinment

having watched the game we played well but didn't have that final finish. for me what was lacking was a goal scorer a match winner, ballo and lambert will never be that.

I don't think BR knows how to successfully use substitutions, when was the last time someone was brought on and won the game. Today we brought on Johnson and balotelli, the least affective players and what did we expect. To win? Are you serious. There's llalana instead of balotelli or lambert. Why in this sort of match would you not at least put Sturridge on the bench. You say the aim was to win a trophy this season so why not display our best players. BR is inexperienced in this position and it won't get better any time soon. Mourinho owns BR every time.

I really don't think we had a goal in ud, Sonia a fair result. However, Johnson for Salho, when we have Lovren on the bench is just insane. Only surprise for me is that Allen wasn't brought on late in the game for Sterling. Hope Sakho isn't out long

Well that's game over. can't see us scoring. The only recent clear chances came to coutinho who has a terrible record at shooting. Oh don't get me wrong, he's awesome in midfield but when it comes to shootint at goal, he's very poor

Is he a striker no he is not get a grip and blame the strikers for not scoring, couthino in doing his job as an attacking midfield, i bet you like lucas for giving the free kick away leading to the goal, he always does it but many on here think he is great,

And that is why Lucas isn't top class

Chris in Tamworth

{Ed001's Note - or why you know nothing? It was a challenge he had to make, only a fool would have let Hazard run through into the box. What kind of tit would blame Lucas when Balotelli was the idiot that played him in? And Johnson was the tool who wasn't marking his man. But you carry on blaming Lucas and show how little you know about the game.}

(1)
(10)

Lucas always gives fouls away around our box, ed he did not have to dive in like he always does, a mediocre def-mid, but no matter what he does bad he always gets support from peo[ple in the know, he should not have dived in and commited the foul, its that simple my kids get told it when they play, but lucas is like mr top man he can't do no wrong, i bet others will get the blame for losing the player who scored, again he should not have dived in

mbrock99

It came from not marking or attacking the ball
We've just had a similar free kick and zouma headed it away facing his own goal in the 6 yard box

However, it is a result of being under more pressure following the balotelli substitution and a change of shape - since when we've looked less dangerous
And if we had bought goals in the summer the tie would have been over.

AggerDo

I have to say Chris you must have had that post pasted for about 2 months. Pretty poor imo.

The Irish Rover

We can only hold our heads high toonight, yhe team done well or if i'm the upcoming brendan interview, the group did great. I think we can take a lot out of that game, the same passion in every game would see us gain top 4 this season.

We were not perfect, but I do really feel balo given a chance to pay off sturridge will be a difference in us scoring and not scoring.

Wayne LFC

I also have to say i think it was Balo marking Ivanovic for their goal.

The Irish Rover

He always gives away dangerous free kicks against the better opposition, he should have been off by then with the amount of times he did it.
Recent weeks he's looked great but that's because we've played teams who haven't come onto us so much (including Chelsea in the first leg) the problem comes when good players put him under pressure in that position because, as I've said many times, he's good but not top drawer as a DM.
If you disagree with that then you are the one who really knows nothing.
I'm not even going to bother talking about Balotelli I know it stemmed from more poor play from him but we all know he's got to go as he's awful

Chris in Tamworth

{Ed001's Note - he gives away free kicks because that is part of his job! You really are making yourself look silly here, with your lack of any idea of the role of a defensive midfielder. Makalele used to give away regular free kicks in dangerous areas. It is better that he picks up the bookings than a centre half inside the penalty box, who would then get a red card and a penalty given. If you can't understand that, then you really are never going to understand professional football.}

Chirs, No one wants to see our HM or any of our defenders give free kicks in dangers areas, but you have to know who you are defending and where, Hazzard is one of the better players in the world, I would not want him to penetrate in the box. But man you can not sit there and pick on Lucas when he played such a good game, there are many other situations or players you can express your frustration on.

Im writing this on 85 mins and may well be in for a slating from some, but I have to say no matter the result in 5 mins or 35 mins, i'm a proud fan tonight, Chelsea have been fluid and slick in their forward movement but Sakho was solid in deffence, yes I know he made 2 bad mistakes which could have cost us but overall i feel he was much improved. Migs seemed to just grow in stature the longer the game went on and showed some of the ability he had at Sunderland.

I read one post that said Gerrard was just a passenger, I don't agree with that either, I think his vision alone created a few chances that with a lesser keeper may have won us the game.

The games not over as i'm writing, I hope Balo can get us a goal as for all he's not done so far, i feel playing off sturridge in the coming weeks and months we will see a better player.

Great performance from the lads overall, and i'm very happy no matter the result after this post.

Let's say for a second that the rumor that I read is true, and Real would pay you 39MM for Sterling. If I told you that you could take that and buy Lacazette and a goalkeeper with that money, would you do it? I know Lacazette is injured right now etc. just speaking hypothetically

I am on the fence as to whether I would or wouldn't. Lacazette can play the same positions, is only 3 years older and may, i say may, have a higher ceiling than sterling?

Just curious what people think

The was a sense in he summer that maybe we did not replace Suarez with the same quality but we should be ok when it comes to quantity. We were proved wrong. We have only 12 players (without Sturridge) who can play without dropping our level big time - non of them is perfect, most of them have a lot of weaknesses but when you see them playing you don't think, sorry this is not a top 6 PL player. These are IMO Ming (yes, despite everything), Can, Skertl, Sakho, Lucas, Markovich, Hendo, Gerrard (but only in an offensive role), Sterling, Lallana, Coutinho (though very poor in the last third), Moreno (but not as a defender) and obviously Sturridge if fit.

Sorry I have seen quite a lot of them and no one can convince me that Johnson, Allen, Borini, Lambert, Louvern, Manquillo or Enrique are good enough to open in a top 6 PL side or one with aspirations to be a top 4.

And with a 12 or at best 13 players squad it is not easy to compete in four competitions.

Lucas 0
Allen 0
Hando 3
Coutinho 2
Marko 1
Lallana 4
And we're playing with no recognised strikers!
Mario 1
Borini 1
Lambert 3
If Sturridge gets injured again, and we don't sign a quality striker, then were in the crap!

Thankfully it was a lot warmer today than Tuesday night as the football did absolutely nothing to warm the blood. Brendan's team selection though.

My thoughts on the boys performance today.

Mignolet - Did okay actually. Good punch out in the second half and quickly out in the first half to clear up. Although he then thought he was Manuel Neuer and nearly got caught. Did not really have a lot to do.

Johnson - Not in a million years a centre back. Just no Brendan. I will go on record as saying that is one of the MOST stupid selections of all time. Against a team with even a modicum of pace and he would be woefully exposed.

Can - I like this lad. Something genuinely classy in the way he plays. Not a centre back obviously but I think he has a big future as a box to box midfielder. Couple of stray passes but did okay.

Sakho - Tough one this. Did well but seems to have a beef with Markovic, will explain below.

Allen - Goodbye. Why Rossiter can't be given a chance ahead of him is beyond me. He was genuinely woeful.

Henderson - Always a positive influence in the middle of the park and tried to get the play moving forward. Will grow next season if he is made captain I think.

Enrique - Didn't think he had done much to get subbed HOWEVER he is one of the most stubborn, brain dead players I have ever seen. Me and my mate couldn't help but constantly look at him every time the ball was getting played long towards our defence. He barely looks at the rest of the back four (when moving back or forward when the rest are trying to hold a line) and shows no interest in communicating with them. Again, I do not see why a youngster could not be given a chance instead.

Manquillo - did okay. Nothing really bad but nothing particularly good. Should have really scored and I am not convinced he has a football brain. Couple of times he was just stood on the wing and really needed to come short to receive a pass. Final delivery could be improved as well.

Coutinho - others may disagree but I thought he was quite poor actually. Would have been one of my picks to be subbed.

Lallana - I really like adam but he didn't have the best day. Again, could have been subbed.

Sterling - does he have that natural instinct for a goal? Not sure. He gets into some wonderful positions but then just dilly-dallies. He needs to learn to take shots early. Genuine threat on the break as you would expect. Why was he moved to right back for a bit. God knows.

Subs

Lucas - at the moment he should be playing every game. Did everything right when he came on.

Markovic - interesting. I think he just needs to run at players more. He is seriously quick but he tries to cut in far too much. Just be more direct, stand a guy up and burn him for pace. Or, as he did on a few occasions, just run through them. But my main gripe is that he is as quiet as a mouse fart. I don't know if this came across on the television but there countless times he was always available for a pass (frankly he was the easiest and obvious pass on) and NOBODY was interested in giving it to him. Seriously it got to the point were we started to scream at Sakho to play him down the line. Sakho never even looked at him (I think he played the ball once to him, maybe twice). Coutinho would also often ignore him and cut infield instead of passing to him. It's not something I have noticed before at the games but pitchside it was noticeable and really was genuinely odd. (Question for the Eds - are you aware of any beef between Markovic and other players or is it something else, struggling to communicate, etc. )

Borini - should have scored really. Twice. D Studge needs to get his boots on. Hard to hate on him though because his attitude is always class and he tries. Would benefit from a long term partnership with somebody upfront I think. He always makes good runs and gets into some great positions.

________________

Brendan - I genuinely do not know where to start. I am sorry but you paid good money for Lovren because he is a good defender. I know his form has not been great but he is more than good enough to deal with two pensioners. I can forgive playing Can over him in the big games because he is good with the ball. But Johnson instead of him at centre back? Please.

Also, why does he get a hard on for playing people out of position? At one point today, I don't know say about 75-80 minutes, he had a back five that consisted of the following:

Left Wing Back - Markovic - a right winger
Left Centre Back - Sakho - genuine centre back
Centre Back - Can - a midfielder (I know he can play there but he is a midfielder all day long)
Right Centre Back - Johnson - a right back (and I use that term loosely)
Right Wing Back - Sterling (the guy who has been our main striker all season)

Why Enrique, Johnson and Allen were in the team to start with is beyond me. If you are going to rotate for these games then give the youth a chance. Particularly Rossiter. Brendan said in the press conference he would be involved. Sadly not to be. Foot in mouth again from Brendan I fear.

______________

Overall, quite a poor game really but we are still in it and I still think we should beat Bolton in the replay. I do fear for us on Tuesday though. Chelsea will be out for blood after today's result and I pray to god Brendan does not do anything daft with the team selection.

Wassa-lfc

{Ed001's Note - language with Markovic mate, he is not confident in his English, he is still young as well, so just give him time on that. It doesn't help that Sakho's English is also not particularly good.}

I was only wondering as it was really strange to see. Not so much the lack of communication but the fact he was just getting ignored.

I know hindsight's a wonderful thing but even BEFORE the game I was telling mates that I couldn't believe the line-up.
Johnson, Enrique and Allen in the same starting XI ?
Maybe I'm being fanciful but against a Championship side at Anfield couldn't Rodgers forget his man-crush on certain players and bring in Rossiter, Ibe or Ward ?
What better chance to use one or two youngsters who would relish the opportunity?
Our home-form this season has mostly been average and made all the more frustrating by Brendan's "genius".
The Glen Johnson Fan-Club only has one member left and the thought of him being offered more of my money makes me shudder.
If BR's general track-record were to be put in front of a jury the prosecution would have a field-day.
Mis-appropriation of funds, impersonating Shankly and cruelty to kids would be the main charges. Not to mention attempted deception in front of a camera and harbouring criminal coaching staff.
We travel to Chelsea on Tuesday with fully-fit players who shouldn't be near the starting team. . so we can probably predict the line-up. Our decent form has coincided with injuries to some of Bren's boyfriends and, to a large extent, fate has picked the team. not Brendan.
He gets credit for changing the system but he's not doing anything which people on this forum have been crying out for all season. Only he's not utilizing the fantastic youth we have.
Texiera, Ibe, Llori, Wisdom, Rossiter, Ward, Smith and Yesil will all be lost to this Club if they keep being ritually ignored by the current management. Word will get around about our youth "policy" and our carefully-constructed status as a good place for kids to come will be shattered.
Good luck Suso and Kelly. . you won't be the last to be "Brendaned" !

Lacked imagination at times, rodgers did well to bring on lucas to null there strong period I thought! Johnson was alright at the centre back, takes the pressure off his lack of imagination these days. Sakho looked very wobbly today, not sure why!
Defensively though, the had about 3 chances, which bat chelsea is the best we've done for a while.
Bit gutted lallana sterling and coutinho played 90, lallana was dead on his feet after 70?! I think sterling should have gone in one of the two behind the striker rather than wing back!

What does Lovren have to do to get a game. Ed's is there any reason why he isn't even getting a game in an FA Cup tie? I'd say the same for Balotelli but I'm guessing it's his attitude and behaviour, but to be fair if we are looking at keeping him then he needs to be played in certain games like today or at least on the bench.

Desperate for a striker or two, even a couple of loaners, in my eyes till summer that's all we need now, Mignolet while still dodgy at times has been marginally better and the back line has settled down a little, we need a finisher in and quick, Oh and I know we have Danny coming back but I wouldn't rely on that being an injury free run till the end of the season, onwards and upwards at least we're still in the hat!

Can, Sakho, Markovic and Henderson looked good today. Very poor performance from the likes of Lallana and Sterling. Sterling's finishing was dreadful and I'm assuming his pass completion percentage was at less than 40%. Build up play was nice today but we are probably the least clinical team in world football right now. We look lost from set pieces too. Bad Skrtel, who has scored a goal from a corner in the last few years?

Sterling for a winger is so weak at taking on defenders one on one I find it mind numbing.

I see the real reason BR prefers to play him through the middle, because if he plays out wide he is just another player on the pitch with no impact.

No youngsters in the team at all was a bit of a joke. It was a prime time to use them playing vs a lower league side in the early rounds of the cups making sure our more well rounded players are rested properly for the next league fixture.

I am slowly getting annoyed with the manager which hasn't happened since Hodgson.

We seem to have a lot of young talent available (marko, can, sterling, rossiter, flanno, moreno,, couts, ibe, etc) just curious who everyone reckons will be the best?

Personally, really like sterling and marko, but think Can will end up the best player of the lot. Just seems to have everything for a midfielder; can defend, drive through the pitch, pass, shot, good feet and a good beard.

Bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question because it hinges on how Brendan (or the new DoF/coach) manages them.
