Surely that's our cheque book closed. Good business with incoming saw just need to shift some players on now.

Seems strange tonight that Pedro and Salah rumours have intensified, we can't add anymore players to our swelling squad surely to God.

Shoot me down if you like but I genuinely believe there is more to come. And to be honest I for one would be rather disappointed if we didn't persue kovacic, additionally I can see us signing a left back

Only a LB for me. Said since start of window and before. Forget Enrique and that leaves Moreno to play, what? 50 games?

We don't want out of position wingers there, Stewart is on loan and Smith refused a contract so I guess is off. Joe Maguire is on tour, but I know zip about him.

LB is required. Plenty of midfielders

Won't Flanagan be fit just after the start of the season? I agree with you Lfc forever I don't think we will need anyone after benteke. We just need to get rid of some players who don't put 100 percent in ie Enrique and balo to name a few.

Just grabbed this from the official site.

"Joe Maguire has been with Liverpool's Academy since the tender age of nine and is a regular member of the U21 squad.

A left back with a sweet left foot, Maguire can deliver quality passes into dangerous areas for his teammates to attack.

Maguire's high fitness and stamina levels allow him to motor up and down the wing into positions where he can cause problems for the opposition."

I think I speak for the majority of fans when I say that I am crying out (almost!) for a young scouser to make a breakthrough to the first team. We have missed that beating heart since Carra and recently Gerrard have left. Going back further we have the likes of God and Macca and even Owen.

Really hope someone makes a breakthrough this year and who knows, it could be Joe.

Forget Kovacic, but the interest in him does suggest a midfielder may be on the cards with some departures.
A left-back would complete the squad and spending.

It was but they lowered it to 30 million euro

It got recently lowered bunny with his latest contract renewal. Still 30 mil though.

There something about Spanish clubs not like using the release Claude because they pay tax on it or something so it will likely be lower than that. Not by much mind

Eds, who do see leaving the squad and their likely destinations. Have you heard anything solid recently?

When are you expecting these outs to start happening? is it all after the tour as most may be loan moves?

Thanks

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - we are open to offers for a number of players, it just comes down to who bids for them. There is no 'likely destination' until someone actually comes in for them.}

16 Jul 2015 22:03:01
Ok, thought maybe you may have heard. Borini - Lazio. Lambert - Bournemouth or Villa. Etc. maybe others maybe some loans etc

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Lazio are pushing for a deal for Borini. You could search and find that.}

I couldn't help but think we should try and loan turan until january. barca president says its a possibility but must not be a ucl club. What does the eds think?

Believable6 Unbelievable2

{Ed001's Note - no thank you.}

16 Jul 2015 19:26:19
You not rate him ed001? Surely barcelona have seen something in him! Not seen a lot of him to be honest, what would you consider his flaws!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he is quality but lazy and has a clear attitude problem in that he is willing to sit around for 6 months so he can pad out Barca's bench in the future. Steer well clear. Any player that moans about having to run is not worth considering.}

16 Jul 2015 19:29:38
Sorry Ed but "No thanks" if Arda Turan is good enough for Barca surely he can't but help us for 6 months.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - good enough for Barca's bench you mean surely? I am sorry but if this is the level of your analysis of a player's ability, then we may as well all give up. Just because they want him does not mean he is right for us. If you want a lazy bugger who just wants a 6 month holiday before spending his career lazing around on the bench because he is fed up of running then go right ahead. That is a recipe for disaster. We have enough players with the wrong attitude already. Bringing players too scared to make mistakes and afraid to have a number with pressure. We are a mess and it is this kind of thing that is causing it.}

16 Jul 2015 19:36:01
may i ask why you say this?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - see above replies.}

16 Jul 2015 20:16:02
Milner and Firminio have taken numbers 7, 11 so the only players that have taken the higher numbers are largely unproven players who are likely to develop given time and then possibly take a new number if it works out for them. Not nesesarily a bad position given their age. I really hope we are not in as much of a mess as you say Ed! I'm trying to be optimistic about things and if we manage to get rid of few to reduce the squad numbers and wage bill then we may have an exciting young team who will be hungry for success.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - I don't want a player to aim to take a number in the future, after fans have spent money on shirts, they should stick with the number they get first off. I want to see a striker have the confidence to say 9 is mine, not hide away from the pressure. Confidence is a huge part of goalscoring, if you don't have the confidence to take pens then hide away from an important number that is a problem.}

16 Jul 2015 20:55:06
Fair comment and I agree about confidence but 9,10 and 11 were taken so what shirt was the likes of Ings or Origi realistically going to take?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - there were numbers available when Ings came in that have since been taken mate.}

16 Jul 2015 21:14:50
Oh ok I didn't realise that. Thanks. There must be some part of you that thinks it's not all doom and gloom. I've got visions of coutinho and Firminio terrorising defences, clyne bursting forward and Milner forming a great partnership hith Henderson and Sturidge staying fit and bagging 20. I can dream at least!

Agree0 Disagree1

17 Jul 2015 09:27:12
Im sorry but a number is a number, its not exactly a big deal. Yaya is 42, Henry was 14, Reina was 25 its just a bloody digit!

Firmino took 11 but he was signed after Ings so that would have been an option for him anyway.

Hi eds what's the latest on Borini future? Is Lazio trying to strike a deal for him? Also have Liverpool dropped the asking price for Balotelli and are any club interested?

Thanks

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Lazio would like a deal for Borini and are making an effort. There is nothing new on Balotelli - but I know the club don't want a loan.}

16 Jul 2015 23:31:20
That's good to hear re balo. Pointless loaning him. If we did he'd only have a year left when he returned.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 17:12:10
Hi Eds, I know this may be a complicated issue, but with regards to the genteel situation, what does his release clause entail? I've always thought that a release clause only meant that the club had to tell the player that an offer was made for them, and a buy out clause meant that the player would be sold if they agreed to the move. However, Sherwood said that if a 32 mil offer came for Benteke, he would be powerless. I didn't realise a release clause could be that powerful.

Cheers and sorry for the long answer.

Believable9 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - An apt time for the question and perhaps I can explain it in easy to understand terms. I should say that this is a horribly complex area not least because they are written under individual national laws.

The "buy out" clause is legally binding between a club and a player. The "buy out" is effectively what it says - a means for the player to buy himself out of the contract. As an example, if a player wishes to buy himself out of a contract, he pays the applicable FA the amount of the "buy out" clause effectively becoming a free agent. The problem is that in most cases a player would need to obtain that money from the buying club - and this is fraught with issues regarding "tapping up" and, of course, taxation as it can be seen as income for the player and would therefore be subject to income tax. There was a test case about the taxation issue in Spain about three years ago. So "bouy out" clauses are very rare.

A "release clause" is far more common in that it gives a figure that the club would accept for the sale of a player to another club - but it is not legally binding except where both parties are in the same country (for the sake of argument I should say that Spain and Portugal count as the same country as do England and Wales). These are normally unreasonably high figures (Messi at Barcelona for example) introduced to act as a deterrent for hostile bids - and even then the club could easily block a move. However, if a club does agree to match a release clause then the selling club would be obliged to ask the player if he is interested - there is no obligation on the player to make a move. Examples are Goetze who decide he wanted to move and Cavani who, regardless of two offers that were made in 2012 that matched or equated to his then "release clause" recognised Napoli did not want to sell and could block a move abroad and he accepted a new package. Since then Napoli said they will listen to offers of €60M or so and indeed accepted a bid the following summer - which is of course different.

There is then the becoming popular "termination clause" which is binding between the player and the club and if met would see an offer from anywhere accepted and the player given the opportunity to make a call on a move. This overcomes the issues associated with "buy out" clauses as the money would be paid by one club to another.}

Hi eds great site long time reader. Seen reports that we have made an enquiry regarding the situation with Chelsea's Mohammed salah. Due to him refusing to stay on loan in Italy. Do you have any knowledge regarding this & also that we are looking to activate buyout clause to barcalona for pedro.
Many thanks

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any approach by Liverpool to Chelsea for Mohamed Salah and common sense dictates that any approach for a player who (a) has failed to settle in England, and (b) was previously offended by the Liverpool manager would not be a really nifty idea.

As for Pedro, matters will become clearer by the middle of next week. Last summer Barcelona would have listened to significant offers for Pedro but nobody would bite. Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United are known to have enquired with his agent earlier in 2014. PSG spoke with Barcelona about the player in the summer of 2013 and in January 2014.

This summer he will likely move. Arsenal's interest remains as does that of Inter, but not at the asking price. An unsolicited approach was made to Manchester United to see if they were interested as well, but at this time they are not. With Salah due to leave this summer it is Chelsea who will push for a deal once the elections are over. Barcelona did look to using him as part of a convoluted part exchange with Kovacic but no deal could be struck with Inter.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I really don't know but I can confirm that release clause figure. Way over priced, a decent injury prone player. Could be Andy Carroll all over. He played best for Villa when Sherwood adopted the "all crosses and long balls straight into Benteke" tactics. Liverpool don't tend to play a direct style, arguably we play more like the Belgian national team, on the deck, where Benteke has been nothing short of useless.

Agree1 Disagree1

16 Jul 2015 17:57:34
No comparison with Andy Carroll. Benteke has actually scored consistently in the PL! None of us know if he will be a success or not but writing a player off before he has even signed on the dotted line. makes me wonder what the hell happened to the "proper" Liverpool fans who actually gave a player a chance!

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Or see what other options might crop up - Spurs has previously shown interest and his agent has approached a couple of other sides - but I rather fancy Liverpool can get this through.}

16 Jul 2015 23:35:02
Seanthered, he may not be a Suarez but if I remember correctly Benteke, Grealish and Delph cut us apart in the FA cup semis through sharp (on the ground) build up play rather than long balls into the box.

Benteke is not another Carroll and if we put Coutinho, Llalana and Firmino around him and he'll score plenty even if he's not exactly our 'style'.

Good afternoon Eds

Mateo Kovacic

I have used the search function to see if there has been any progress, changes (positive or negative) or anything new to report in relation to the possible transfer of Kovacic but could not find anything recent.

Up to now we know Inter would not accept the initial amount offered by Liverpool, and Liverpool did not want to pay the increased amount Inter asked for under Liverpools conditions.

So with the original offer still on the table. is it dependant on:-

Liverpool waiting to see if Inter bring more tagerts in after Montoya, Miranda, Kondogbia, Biabiany and Murillo ( I understand some of those are loan deals and Kondogbia being around the £40m mark)in hope that when they come to sell to balance there books, they may reconsider the original offer put on the table for Kovacic, if they cannot sell who they would prefer to sell for the expected amounts to balance the books?

I guess that will be playing a waiting game, and Liverpool gambling on loosing there target if another club come in and match the price wanted by Inter

Or, are Liverpool re considering there offer, nearer to what Inter would accept to get the deal done?

And.Are Inter still looking to bring other targets in which would further delay any business happening between them and Liverpool?

Sorry for the drawn out questions Eds but I was hoping if any progress had been made very recently, or anything had changed (if we had dropped interest, or moved onto another more viable target) you may be able to pass the info on

Thanks in advance for any current info you can pass on

Regards

{Ed002's Note - No, Liverpool's offer was rejected - why would Inter sell cheaply to Liverpool? Inter and Liverpool do not at this time have any business to do. Move on.}

Looks like source of the story is Calicio Mercato Web - never heard of them before so not sure if they are reliable or the Italian equivalent of TalkSport!

The gossip is being reproduced in various UK online & offline media outles - Express, Metro etc.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - they are just repeating the information he has been made available with a link to a big club that would seem believable to get maximum exposure for the story, I would say.}

16 Jul 2015 10:21:00
Never seen him play, Ed001, so would appreciate your view if you have (and have time!).

Looks like he was used more as a playmaker in his earlier career but in his last year at Milan has hit more goals in a season than before - 16 in 33. However half of them were from pens.

Difficult to get a view on him as a player just from the stats, so any extra insight appreciated! His stats certainly seem worse than Benteke's, and he's a few years older and not used to EPL. But he will likely come for 1/3 of the price.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - last I saw him play was before he moved to Italy, so it could be a bit out of date, but he looked a mobile big man with a good touch. Played a number of different attacking roles if memory serves me correctly, wide as well as central. Looked to be capable of holding the ball up.}

16 Jul 2015 11:56:20
Thanks for that Ed001. Combining with what the guys are saying on Adam's thread in banter, it certainly seems like he could offer us quite a lot for a lot less money. If its true, of course!

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 12:24:58
You clearly ahve never seen him play. he's decent but you can't even compare him to Benteke, he's about a foot shorter and is closer to Coutinho or Lallana. he's never going to Liverpool doesn't fit the age or position profile of what's needed.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 13:49:51
Sean, menez is a few inches shorter than benteke, so still 6" and more mobile and versatile, it is a move that would make sense to me but I todo think it would be a risky transfer

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Jul 2015 17:05:44
Benteke at 32.5mil is a more than risky transfer! he's not proven internationally and is very injury prone. As for Menez I still don't think you can compare the two, he's far more mobile than Benteke who is just a target man, his mobility is being far overplayed. All Villa do is pump crosses and long ball into him. That would hardly be BR's style of football, which Andy Carrol was deemed unsuited to, as did Ricky Lambert last year.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jul 2015 23:47:27
Proper left field and silly I know but I wouldn't mind valdes coming in for a season or two I know we have bogdan this summer but if we could get the right deal I think it could help our distribution from the back and maybe benefit our centre backs. It's only a suggestion not a rumour or anything

Believable1 Unbelievable5

{Ed002's Note - It is strange you should say that as I was reading the Liverpool Echo earlier and saw "Liverpool Soccerball Team on Red Alert" (as that is the headline which (a) attracts attention and (b) means it is absolutely nailed on to happen) "as Valdes has his hair fluffed by Sakho during secret meeting in back room of Bridlington Halal Butchers."}
