Did you know that the Spanish changed their national anthem cos of seeing liverpool away supporters traveling to away games in Spain. they love us that much. what ya think? believe or don't believe? what ya think ed? anthony {ed's note - I have never heard that mate, I do know there is a club in Spain that has as their anthem 'we are going to play Liverpool in the European Cup' because we are so admired there. My parents live in Spain and they tell me everyone knows Liverpool there, but I really can't see them changing a national anthem because of it.}

LFC is the 3rd biggest supported team in Spain ED. One of our most well known fans from Spain is Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) double world champion.

Don't know why i'm posting this crap ED i've been sitting here waiting for news about Roy being sacked for days. Any good news for me ED?

Blair Mayne YNWA

PS. That's not true about te national athem. {ed's note - I didn't know Alonso was a Liverpool fan, I have completely changed my view of who I want to win the F1 title now! I always hated him in the past, but he has just shot up in my estimation. Sorry Blair no news at the moment, I doubt anything will happen until the board is appointed, otherwise who would pick the new man?}

Ed, have you got any update from your sources regarding the managerial issue? {ed's note - I don't mate, I doubt there will be any change until a new board is completely in place. They will have to make the final decision after all, I am worried my sources have got it wrong this time. Though I can't see any circumstances under which anyone would feel Roy has done a good enough job so far, the new board might over rule any 'advice' given to them if things have improved. The problem is that, if they are being honest with me, then there will be a huge problem with the players if they don't bring in a new man.}

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

If it would create a huge problem having Roy as manager i don't think NESV would stick with Roy. They'll definitely do something. what do you think ed? {ed's note - well that is what I was told, and the rumours about the players having a meeting would make sense, even though no one I know will confirm or deny it happened. I still am sure they are right and that Roy will be gone, it just seems likely to take longer than I first thought.}

I think we need to scout some scouts! Carlton Cole - please no. Konchesky and poulsen are bad enough for 1 year.

It is sad that we are all highly enthused and optimistic when king kenny is scouting a player but not hopeful that the guys who are paid to know who is fit to wear the red shirt scout them!

Woy showed balls of steel against Blackburn. He fielded the same team as against Blackpool. His best team. He sent out an important message to his squad. His job is in jeopardy but he didn't lay blame on any of his first team by dropping them. I think he was rewarded with a better performance by players feeling reassured by their boss. Rafa would have rotated the whole team and alienated players with potential. I think Woy needs time. He knows more than me or any other championship manager know it alls that post on this site

what was actually said was that NESV won't sanction big spending on OLDER players. .

How much would llorente cost ed and what are the chances of us really getting him? {ed's note - from what I hear Bilbao need money and are looking to cash in either in January or the summer, so we have a good chance of getting him. The cost issue could be a problem as it depends on who else goes in for him, he has a lot of admirers, but I doubt any of them would be in for him in January, so I doubt he would cost much more than 20m. It really depends how desperate the club is for money, they might hold out for more in the summer if they can afford to.}

Why is Mexes' name being banded about?! He is one if the worst defenders I've seen, certainly no improvement on the defenders we have! We are in such desperate need of a striker and I'm in total agreement with ed that llorenta is perfect. He reminds me of the first time I saw collymore and Ibrahimavic first hit the seen, strong players with bags of potential talent! Hopefully Woy will go and the money for a class striker will be spent along with with speedy winger. How about a cheeky bid for boswinga from Chelsea?!

In Spain children take the surname of their father first and their mother second so the two players are Fernando Torres Sanz (Liverpool) and the other is Fernando Llorente Torres. It doesn't really matter to us as I would love to see them both in our future first team.

I have been amazed to read that so many people believe that it will take years for us to get back in to contention for a Champions League place (never mind challenging for the title). I honestly believe that to be a load of bollo'. How can a team which contains Reina, Gerrard Meireles and Torres (plus many more international players) be years off the top four or the title. We could finish top four this season and win it next. Whether that is with Roy in charge or not I could not say but the squad we have could do it. All we need is players played in the right position and young guns given their chance. Anyway, can someone explain what happened on Sunday. I know it was Blackburn at home but we appeared to stick it up 'em from the start. Was it down to the players taking matters into their own hands (believe) or does the manager deserve full credit (unbelievable)?

Also does everyone realise Fernando Llorente's name is actually Fernando Torres? imagine that. at least we could sing to them both at the same time just add 'Liverpool's forward line' instead of '. .Liverpool's number nine. '
any takers on that? {ed's note - could you imagine being a defender having to face two Fernando Torres'?}

imagine if the commentators called him by torres lol, , , gerrard to cole cole to torres, torres to torres torres back to torres torres shoots goalkeeper pushes it out but torres shoots and scooress gooaalll for torres, , , , all listners on radio would be lke huh, , , ok so what torres scored ha ha

Do you guys have any idea of what happen with Agger?
even Kuyt with serious injury is showing sign of coming back.
Roy kept saying that he's sick? {ed's note - this is a decent site for keeping an eye on injuries, it is not perfect by any means, but it is the best resource I have found so far: http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php }

I think a good signing for us in january would be Jefferson Farfan, he's a good pacey talented striker, i think he and torres would form an awesome attacking
partnership.
what do you think ED? {ed's note - I am not sure on him, sometimes he looks great, other times I have seen him he has looked weak and lacking the fight we need. Farfan at his best would be a great signing though.}

Liverpool Rumour.
I think Roy will have made suggestions to the club about his targets and as someone else said NESV are assessing his judgement as they assess everything else top to bottom.
The first thing is to get the decision makers right; The Board
Second must be to set the financial plan in motion and that will include options based upon team performance so transfers will be part of this in order to generate the best possible within probably pre thought out parameters for spending. Roys targets will indicate to the board his knowledge, his vision and his ambition. His won't be the only voice they hear though and they will consult other football aware people (King K). If they think he is out of his league then he will be jetisoned before they spend another cent. Their man will come in knowing their vision and based on his presentation of his own vision to get the job decisions will be made.
Third we HAVE to get our academy paying for itself. .its a scandal the wages we pour into their without any return ie players coming through. This will be addressed and the youngsters given chances to see where they actually are. If they aint gonna make it they have to go!
We need a young manager to grow with the team and who can use KK and Carra to great effect as boot room type boys and consiglieri. We need patience but mine has run out with Roy I'm afraid and he doesn't fit in with the vision of the club from where we are and where we want to be. He aint daft he knows he walked into a blender and he was gonna get one very small window to produce or he would be gone. .and he hasn't, sadly. King Ken could never have been a serious option just to be replaced it would cost too much good will.
Ed any thoughts? {ed's note - I agree, though I think that the only way to make the Academy worthwhile is to change manager. Unless we have one who is willing to give youngsters a chance, then they will always be sold for peanuts. A 21 year old player with 10 Premier League appearances under his belt is worth a lot more than a 21 year old player who has yet to make his Premier League debut.}

Ha if i was in charge id be offering atletico madrid, , babel, , lucas, , + 20-23mill for aguero

dats why you are not the manager!

true RED!

thats a good offer i think we should offer that, aguero is worth 30-35mill. . babel isn't working in the prem, neither is lucas, , , maybe they r suited to the la liga a slower pace. .and they r worth bout 6mill each so theres 12mill on top of 20-23 so that's 32-35mill yeah would work. .

What are we doing with some of our younger strikers like saric, Simon and browuer. If we are never going use them get them out and all the other youngsters that aren't going to make it. What do think ed {ed's note - I do wonder how we can expect to attract the best youngsters when they look and see how little chance they will get to play. At least if they get loan moves they can get a chance to put themselves in the shop window. Though I have to say that I thought we had already got rid of Brouwer, what happened to him?}

Well i don't think we need much players in Jan

Simply Sell
Lucas 6m
Johnson 12m
Maxi 4m
Poulsen 4m
Babel 8m
Total = 34m
and get
Llorente = 16m
Sanchez = 16m Top Priority
Honda 12m
and Nuri Sahin = 10m this guy hasnt been mentioned much . but believe me he is Awesome . as good as Turan

total 54m . . net spent 20m . and quality is amazing . replace johnson with Kelly and sbustitute Darby . and i would want Aurelio to play in 1st team rather thn Konchesky . he is rubbish but good in patches.

Might get loads for sayin this but I'd like to see andy carroll come to us. He's young, tall, powerful, good in the air and knows where the next. He wud give the likes of terry and vidic a good little wrestle and share the load with torres. {ed's note - he is playing against an awful defence, in Arsenal's, tonight and doing nothing. I have never seen a player less mobile and with a slower turning circle than Kyrgiakos, until Carroll tonight. Even if he wasn't a thug who likes to attack anyone in reach, whether they be team mates, his girlfriend or someone stood next to him at the bar, he would still not be good enough to get near our team, he is truly rubbish.}

He's scored over 30 goals last year but fair enough it was the championship and so far 5 goals in 9 games with 1 assist yet he's completey rubbish. End of the day he is a footballer and is playin in the premiership and is earn 30k a week and not running a football rumour website pretending to no people with info about signings and managers which 99% just lies. {ed's note - and your point is? He is a big lump who will score goals, so did Alan Smith for Arsenal but he was still a crap player. But if you have a big lump and two wingers who put crosses into the box, the lump will score goals - Kyrgiakos' goals this season prove that. As for your talk about lies, I don't lie about what I have been told, I have no need to, I have been proven right enough to show that I am not lying, and when I don't know I have said I don't know. Now if you want to pick up your toys and put them back in your pram and grow up a bit and act your age instead of throwing a girly strop when someone disagrees with your opinion, then we can carry on the discussion, if not go elsewhere because I have better things to do than read your whines.}

Stop! Please stop with the demands and wishes for a new cb. We have three young Cb's in the squad who are ready for the top level: Kelly, Ayala, and Wilson. Also we have Agger who is only 25 and is world class. Soto is also good to have for certain games and situations. And two promising youngsters coming through are Wisdom and Coady. So I repeat there is no need for a new CB. Do not let all these good young players go to waste like Hobbs. Look at him now
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
agree totally with you. Last season we saw Johnson injured with Degen and Kelly available and what did the manager do. .move Carra to RB. Same thing happening this season. Talk about crushing the other RB's at the club, why are they there at all so.

When Roy was asked after the Napoli game if some of the young players had forced themselves into the reckoning for the Blackburn game he basically said no way and went on about his Marquee players at home coming back for the game. Don't get it myself, would have been easier to just say they had given him a lot to think about, maybe blackburn a bit soon but they're really pushing etc. etc. Give the young guys hope and keep the older guys on their toes. what ever happened to if you're good enough your old enough, if you play well you're in, if you don't you're out etc. Mourhino at Real played the same team 3 games in the last week. Won all the games

I say don't spend all available funds in jan. . keep cash for the summer,

honda is top of mine and most peopes wish list,

any 3 from the following would be great

honda
affellay
coentrao
banega
SANCHEZ
llorente
bent
wickham
shawcross
forlan

none of these would cost in excess of 15 mill apart from honda and forlan, but we won't get both anyway, who would you hav from the list above?

Ed do you think the king kenny didn't get the job as you said on an earlier post that people wouldn't kick up a fuss if roy was let go so maybe the board were infact protecting the king from roys fate i don't know if this was posted before just thought id ask if the board did do this to protect kenny id say fairplay to them and the king was upset at the time at not geting the job so maybe im wrong
king henry {ed's note - yes, he was not considered because of the pending sale of the club. Not so much about protecting Kenny, more about making sure a sale could go through. All the prospective new owners wanted to put their own man in place, none would have wanted to remove the King though!}

Ed u hav an answer for everythin don't ya lol. .

realistic team in 12 months:
reina
johnson, hangelaand, agger, aurelio
gerrard, meireles
affellay young
torres, llorente

what do u think? wat wud be yours? {ed's note - I do try, you really need to have with these sites! Mine would be: Reina, Kelly, Ayala, Agger, Mavinga, Sanchez/Afellay, Gerrard, Meireles, Honda, Torres, Llorente/Wickham. Though I would probably play it as more of a 4-3-3, with Llorente the central striker and Torres and Sanchez/Afellay playing off him and Gerrard, Meireles and Honda in midfield. But it would allow us the flexibility to play a number of ways with the same personnel.}

Yeah ok fair enough, although llorente as proven himself at the world cup, we saw flashes of sanchez but nothing special, i know i could be completely wrong but we hav taken 2 many gambles on players like him, babel is the prime example, was excellent in the u-21 ch'ships for holland and had a good year with ajax, but proved he wasnt cut out for this level. im jus wonderin would sanchez be able to cope with the physical aspect as well as the speed of the game! {ed's note - the difference is that Babel was watched by all the top clubs and they all decided he wasn't good enough except for us. Sanchez has already been the subject of rejected offers from a number of the top clubs, United were told it would take 25m to get him in the summer. I have to say that I watched Babel a lot for Ajax for a couple of seasons before we got him and was absolutely gutted we signed him. He was awful, I just couldn't see how he got in the team at all, but then Ajax were a very poor side then.}

How probable is it that if Liverpool start to play better and work themselves out of the relegation zone Hodgson stays? Make no mistake about it, any owner will look to do more with less. So, this notion that NESV are in love with Pellegrini, Rijkaard or any other manager is nonsense. If Mr Bean could get Liverpool to win the prem he'd be appointed. Hodgson has the job for now and he will be given the chance to prove his worth. However, his transfer dealings will be monitored closely. If he has Carlton Cole, Luke Young or any other average prem leaguer on his list then he won't be given a penny to spend. Part of NESV's evaluation process is to determine how ambitious Roy truly is. Therefore, he should signify intent by asking for Llorente, Suarez, Mata, Contreao, Elia Eljaro and Hazard as well as get rid of all expendable players. Of course he won't get them all, but at least he'll show that this mid-table label of his is unfair. I think Roy is smart enough to understand that.

27 Oct 2010 20:40:22
Yeah but sanchez is playing well in italy, that doesn't say hes going to be cut out for the premier league, llorente i agree would be excellent, and would also be a big plus for torres as they are good friends.
ashley young has showed he has bags of talent in his locker and has proved he has what it taks to play in the premier league. if he came 2 liverpool we could work with him 2 improve his agression, providing we have a manager who is good at working with players in that way, . .
another player who is being overlooked is toivenen, good target man and would compliment nando, ?
anybody agree with wat iv said here?
ed? {ed's note - I haven't seen a lot of Toivonen so I don't know, I also disagree on your assessment of Sanchez. I think he has as much chance of being a success as Llorente.}

Ed, don't know whether this is true but my contact's pretty sure abt a winger coming to Anfield in January. . He was pretty sure it was gonna be Alexis Sanchez cause hes largely involved with Italian Football. .he tells me that we were scouting him extensively for a while during the time Roy was appointed and that now we have stopped scouting him. .hes certain Roys got all info on him and would bid and land the player. . Also, we r now favs cause Real, Inter and even Manu r loosing interest in him. .ur thoughts? ?

GTH {ed's note - I know Roy loves him, he was raving about him during the World Cup and he does love to play with wingers. But his wingers have never really been the small, tricky type though so it would be a surprise if Roy chose to sign him.}

Names thrown my way today.
Maximilian Beister 20yrs old Striker,
Eren Derdiyok 22yrs old Striker,
Marko Arnautović 21yr old Striker.

My pick of the 3 would be Derdiyok, he's a big, powerful, snarling, bag of madness, torres would love him, this guy wud batter centre halfs all over the place leaving torres/ gerrard loads of space.

Ok Ed lets just say I'm the manager and you and some of the other Ed's are Reina, Gerrard & Torres! I am willing to sign 3 players in Jan, I want your opinion on who to sign and why! !
Aroc {ed's note - I would go for Sanchez, very tricky winger with lots of pace, he would add the width we are currently lacking on the right. Honda, forget the fact he would sell obscene amounts of shirts (I remember Nakata repaying his transfer fee to Roma purely in sales of limited edition polo shirts they released!), he would add left sided balance and could cover left back and play up front if required. The other buy has to be Llorente, apart from the joy of having two Fernando Torres' playing up front, he offers great aerial threat and power, pace, movement, similar to Drogba really.}
Sounds good to me, only problem is I'm not the manager Roy is. Do you think he would go for these signings thou? I think we will need an attack minded manager to agree to these kind of signings, lets hope he arrives soon.
Aroc {ed's note - Roy has always played with wingers, but I don't remember them ever being the tricky little winger type, like Sanchez. I would be absolutely gobsmacked if we don't at least bid for Honda, it would be sheer insanity not to try and bring him in. It would be like having a left footed Stevie Nicol!}

I wouldn't call swp awful. . if hes awful he wouldn't hav ever played 4 chelsea and city. .i know hes not liverpool quality, but i can't see us attracting the class of player wee need. young has been mentioned, he would really improve our side, his final ball is excellent from what iv seen, what do u think ed? and if we could sign 4 players in the next window, who would u like to see us buy realistically? {ed's note - I am not a fan of Young, his quality is there, at times, but he is not a brave player. We need players who will dig in and scrap as well as being able to play, Young is more likely to hide if things get rough. My 4 would be Afellay, Llorente, Honda and Sanchez, though Mata and Banega I would be interested in too. All of those are players who either want to more or the clubs need money so are within reach. Afellay is coming to the end of his contract so would be reasonably priced, Honda's shirt sales would more than cover his transfer fee, so that really only leaves Sanchez and Llorente to find money for and that could be raised by the sales of all our fringe players. Babel, Kyrgiakos, Insua, Aqualani, etc etc. Though there is always Wickham as a cheaper option to Llorente if need be.}

Who would you trust more to make the correct decisions on buying new players in January?

Believable for Kenny Dalglish, Unbelievable for Roy Hodgson.

Correct me if I am wrong :- wasn't Kenny involved in the Transfer targets in the summer?

If so why would we want either of them to scout for players when obviously they haven't got a clue or were panick buying.

Liverpool need 2 splash out if we want 2 focus on the present instead of the future, all we need is 4 top class players, a striker, 2 wingers and a cb. . keep kuyt as aback up forward. he done well last eason in torres' absence. atm our strongest team is .
reina
johnson, agger, carragher, aurelio
kuyt, lucas, meireles, cole
gerrard
torresin my opinion that is mid-table quality,
reina, meireles, cole, gerrard, torres nd agger are good enough for startin 11,
there are 2 many unrealistic names being tossed about. .eg. sanchez(realatively unknown) and banega etc. people are just naming players.
realistic good signins would be:

shawcross
affelay or w.philips
llorente or bentwhat do you think ed? {ed's note - SWP would be a realistic signing but not a good one, more like a terrible signing. He is an awful player, I would rather have 10 men on the pitch than have him in my side.}

Hello Ed. In you're opinion what is the probability in a percentage, we will have a new manager in by January to spend what ever funds are available to us?

Sass. {ed's note - 99% in my opinion.}

I hope this is correct but wasnt this supposed to be happening after the blackburn game?

EST.1892 {ed's note - that was the impression I got rather than what I was told, it was me getting ahead of myself. I was told Roy is gone as soon as a new manager is found, but I never stopped and thought about it rationally, I just got excited at the thought of him being gone. If I had thought about it rationally, I would have realised they are going to need a board in place to choose a new man first!}

I just wish if it was going to happen then now would be the best time. Between now and January ( Chelsea apart ) we have games that we should have a chance of winning. If this happens and Roy then stays and spends X amount of money in January and fails we have waisted the money as a new boss ( after January ) would want his own players in the summer. As a i have said all along , the club will be very brave to give Roy the money in January.

Heard on sky sports news tonight that hodgson will not be getting much money for transfers come january.

I think that's because he won't be manager by then and that any funds are reserved for a new manager whoever that may be. My bets on Pelligrini (spelling?) as he was being felt up before Hodgson got the job. I think if we would of had new owners when rafa left, Pelligrini would have been appointed manager then. Anyone else agree?.

Never heard something so ridiculous, sanchez is already proven quality that will only get better, to compare sanchez to the likes of babel, cisse & diouf is a insult to the lad

BigBirdBilly

To this guy
"Just looked at alexis sanchez on youtube at his best bits and he looks like he is going to fallover every time he tries to dribble past a player! "

Sorry but if you think that then you clearly have no football knowledge

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

well why if everyone disagreeing with you then roy? You wouldn't be able tospot world class talent like johnson and banega if it bit you on the nose. . you only have the eye for players like sanchez who are only good enough for fulham
{Editor's note - Have you ever seen Sanchez play a full game? He is a brilliant player atm and will only get better. He could be a world class player with the right coaching.}
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I have seen him play actually, i admit he may have potential but so did babel, insua, cisse, diouf, sissoko. . the list goes on and on. we have brought potential for years and it always seems to backfire. we need to buy proven quality now before its too late {ed's note - Babel had so much potential that Ajax couldn't sell him for years, he was never in the same league, nor were any of the others you list. There is a difference between buying pure potential, to buying a top class youngster who has the potential to get better. Sanchez is already top class and has the potential to get better.}

"You do realise that the £300m NESV paid for the club isn't the transfer kitty?

I realize 300M wasnt the transfer kitty but 200M will do mate. . .
"
Firstly, each member hasn't/ wouldn't/ won't be putting in 50M towards the purchase/ running of LFC, I would guess the majority of the 300M was borrowed (against NESV not the club). What business has 300M cash to throw around? If they do they are very very poorly run.
I also think it's a tad naive to think these people would even invest 5% of their total "worth" in the club. The club will be run by people employed by NESV, transfer funds will come from within the club's balance sheet on the whole, although it's possible they may inject a small amount of cash into the club for players to kick things off.

Secondly, I sincerely believe we do not need to spend 200M or even 100M on new players in the next 12 months. We need to accept it is unlikely we will challenge for the league for the next 2 seasons minimum. We need to consitently improve and invest, modestly, over this time and position ourselves as consistent title challengers. I for one will take 2 years of upper middle table occupation if the result is us building on our legacy. Istanbul aside, I don't think our legacy has improved a great deal since 1991. We have to get it right this time and this will mean patience all round. As the greatest fans in the world, with everything we have been through, this shouldn't be too difficult. I truly believe the future is finally looking bright. We don't have an ageing squad, we're not hamstrung by debt and we're not at the mercy of a sugar daddy. Chin up eh lads/ lasses!

I think that if where lucky lfc will make 3 signings in Jan at the very most.

Most of the business is done in the summer at any club level, also if there is no chance of CL footie and let's be honest that's us then no "world Class player" will be intrested in us at the moment.

In any case i think we will be looking at young british
talent 16 - 20 years old. A striker ofcoarse and maybe a CB if there right one is there at the right price.

But what ever happens in Jan lfc will keep it as close to there chest as possible and all these names banded around may just be smoke and mirrors to keep price down.

Ed any thoughts who may fit that bill CB, Striker and Youth? {ed's note - CB for me would be one we already own, if it is possible to bring back Ayala from his loan spell. Striker would be Llorente or Wickham if we need to fill the homegrown quota. Both of them are also young.}

I made a point about liverpool playing 4-4-2 yesterday and trying to form a partnership upfront with what we have at the moment and I was quite happy too see that people did agree with what I was saying. With the team we have I would play this team

Reina
Carra Skrtel Agger Konchesky/ Aurelio

Johnson Meireles Gerrard J.Cole

Torres Kuyt/ Ngog/ Babel/ jovanovic

As you can see I have put Glen johnson as a right midfielder and some of you might be thinking wtf? But think about it, We all moan he can't defend so compliment him with carragher behind him who can and let him go forward. Is it not worth a shout until we can assess our finances at Jan/ End of the season and go out an sign an out and out winger?

Possibilities that I feel we could look at and sign:

Santi Corzola
Stuart Downing (play J.cole on the right)
kuba
Matty Jarvis

Last thing, can people not praise Soto, he's not fit to wear the red shirt, Sami Hyypia should still be wearing the red number 4.

Just 2 quick points, if king kenny was at the Lille v CSKA Sofia game don't forget there were 21 other players on the pitch (19 minus the keepers we have that position covered lol) not just Eden Hazard. don't get me wrong would love him at the club, just don't be disapointed if we don't sign him in the transfer window.
And i think matt jarvis is a really good player he can beat any1 when he's up for it, i remember he had the beating of use last season. and i've been told he gave manu're a tough time last night ed any thoughts on the lad.

Some of the guys seem uncertain abt Alexis Sanchez's ability. .the guy is amongst the top talents in football right now. .he's a regular starter for Udinese and Chile and can up his game for big matches. .u'll find youtube videos on this point. .He's at a stage in his career where he needs to make a step up. . with Liverpool being short on genuine creative talent, Sanchez is the player to go for. . With better players arnd him, he'll definately get better but I agree with the Ed that he'll need to be used correctly(in his favoured position, etc. )

For all the bull being said in the tabloids i for one never expected NESV to come in and spunk hundreds of millions on players but what i wouldf like to see is them looking to get players that make both commercial and tactical sense

i would love to see

HONDA-12M ( asian market and tactically gresat an play in a number of roles and is quality)

SANCHEZ-20M (just pure quality and am sure his value would increase in a few seasons)

BENEGA-13M (again pure quality and will be a superstar in the future with a resale value if we needed to)

MATA-17M (just pure quality and am sure his value would increase in a few seasons)

LUKAKLU-(spelling)-17M (will become a world beater and a big strong player similar to drogba)

So i would be happy wiv three players in jan and they don't have to be massive names just good players willng to giveit there all for the club
i would want honda, mata and lukaklu but ant seeit happening, and ed what is your opinion on jarvis from wolves?? ??

Ed, is it true that NESV are massively interested in building for the future?. .The recent scouting pretty much proves this point but would like to know ur opinion. .Also just trying to prove whether my contact is the real deal. .apparently we have been scouting

1) Guilleme Hoarau
2) Sylvain Marveaux
3) Alexis Sanchez
4) Conor Wickham
5) Keisuke Honda
6) Eden Hazard
7) Steven Defour
8) Ron Vlaar

If my contact is correct, we are certain to buy a winger in January. .ur thoughts? {ed's note - your contact seems to be correct, though there are a fair few other players being scouted, I was once told that every club has a minimum of 50 players being scouted at any one time. It is just some are being kept tabs on for future reference and others are being scouted with a view to buying them.}

The main problem with liverpool is roy. . and i don't mean his management. . i mean his ego. to explain myself an example would be konchesky. we all agree that he isn't good enough for LFC and that hodgson also believes this by now, but due to him not wanting to say he was wrong to buy him, konchesky willcontinue to be a first team regular until roy is sacked. the same goes for poulsen. roy will not admit he made mistakes in the transfer market so therefore will not replace them with better talent in january. the only way forward for lfc is to get rid of roy and his crappy buys

Hope! {ed's note - sorry but I got bored at the beginning when your talk about us not knowing who is fit etc rambled on a bit long. That is absolute rubbish, if a player wasn't fit he would be rested, Rafa always played defensive football. I liked Rafa as a person, the charity work he did for the city of Liverpool was second to none and him and his wife will always have a place in my heart for that. But I used to hate watching us play under him, yes we dominated possession, but not in a Barca way, not in a 'get the ball and get at the opposition way', but in a 'get the ball and hold onto it and stop the opposition scoring' kind of way. That is not what football should be about, you should want to get the ball so that you can score, not so that the opposition can't.}
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
but ed surely u would agree he is probably one of the best managers out there (even though he played defensively). We got results under him. We never saw what Rafa could do with a nice sum of money. The fact is i did want him out but i would love to see him back now. I have kept tabs on inter and they are 3rd and scored 10 goals and conceded only 4 in 8 games so far and playing well and are my favourite to win the champions league and retain it! Rafa one the Spanish title and UEFA Cup with Valencia, an F.A cup, Champions League and a runners up (with a very mediocore squad-smicer and cisse, need i see more) and a 2nd place finish (our best in years)

but what im trying to say Ed is that Rafa is far better than Roy. If you were given him the sack would you not of replaced him with a proven manager and not a middle table manager at most? Bring Hiddink in very good manager and would sort out the squad.

p.s. great sight ed and hope this gets put up in the rumours section

YNWA {ed's note - I do agree Rafa is a very good manager - that is not in doubt, he won enough with Valencia to prove that. I would not choose Hiddink though, fantastic manager but he will not stay for ten years and give the club the stability it needs.}

Hi Guys I live in Spain and went to watch Real Madrid last night play Real Murcia and was wondering why on earth we let Arboloa go? he was cruising last night and was never in trouble once.! and for anyone who thinks bringing in Benzema in Jan would be a godd option, IT ISN'T he was so bad last night he made Rooney on present form look a world beater.!

MB {ed's note - Arbeloa had wanted a return to Spain for a while mate, he had been persuaded to stay an extra year, but there was no way he was going to do that once Real Madrid stepped in.}

Turan will not be signing for Liverpool. Juan Mata will be though. Valenica plan to replace Juan mata with Turan and have asked Liverpool not to get involved as part of the £18million deal. NESV recognise that Juan Mata is a young world class talent, who can double his value in as little as a year. Torres recommended him, it could go some way in persuading Torres to stay.

I have read a lot of crap about who we will buy and what we will do. Roy want last long, he was cannon fodder all along! He was the person stupid enough to take the job, and so far it has proved far too big of job for him. The new owners will get the new board sorted out and then matters will turn to Roy!

I have a friends in the first team and they no nothing more than Roy is not the person to take the team forward. The performance against Blacburn wasn't Roy's doing it was due to a meeting between the players and how they wanted to approach the game to show the liverpool fans that they could turn things around.

I hear Roy will be replaced by December, there are three people in the running. Rijkaard, Pellegrini and hiddink. They are currently reviewing which coach they feel will take liverpool to the winning level over the next 5 years and more.

Ed - What are your thoughts about the manager and possible managers to be? I also think that out of all 3 managers Rijkaard would be the person who would give our youth a chance. Would you agree ED?

By the way you have done a fantastic job with this site. {ed's note - I prefer Pellegrini myself, but at least with Rijkaard the kids should get a chance and the football would be good to watch. Hiddink would probably be a fantastic short term fix, but he is not the answer for the long term in my opinion.}

I think people are reading too much into the statement made by NESV regarding players being signed. (As an example) If you ring a painter/ Decorator and ask him to come and paint a room for you, but also tell him you've only got £5000 to spend, the likelihood is he'll give you a quote of £5000. Even though the real price of the job is no where near that amount. The same goes with transfer fees, once you've announced to the world how much money you have to spend the price goes up. Plus, there is much sense in what was said anyway. We are not, and don't want to become a Man city type club. The right player for the right price is the way we should be doing business.

Apologies to any Painter/ Decorators reading this I know your not all conmen.

Agreed! Henry is clever. He's just sending out a very early message to everyone that whilst he has the money to buy the club and the wealth behind NESV, he's not going to be taken for a ride by other clubs.

He's not got money to burn like Man City and Chelsea have. By making a statement like this he's just distancing NESV from the crazy reckless spending!

Also, we have to live within our means. If we did that we'd be top 4 based on income. If other clubs like Man City spend far in excess of their income then that's entirely up to them. .Their fame will be short lived. I'd rather support a club that's self sufficient than one that drives itself into the extinction. .Because who would I support if Liverpool went bust?

Arrrgghh the old Ed is back, after his ramblings about Sean O'Driscoll I thought we'd lost him to the dark side, but judging by his comments regarding the owners saying they will not splash the cash is spot on.

There are too many fans who don't trust NESV, mainly because they are American, therefore they look at them as if they are H&G in disguise. The moment anything remotely comes out that isn't dripping in the owners spending huge amounts on fancy foreign players, we're shouting "spade in the ground in 60 days, here we go again".

Let's give them a little more respect and the time needed to earn our respect. Spending £60M in January isn't the way to go about things if they are honest, trustworthy owners. Some of you fantasists out there think that is the only way an owner should behave.

We cannot believe that just because H&G are gone, the club is in sound financial condition, because it clearly isn't. We still made a loss even without the interest payments on the debt. Lack of CL football this year will hit revenue streams harder. Because of the 'issues' with the past owners, we have by definition made our club pretty unattractive to future sponsors and big Company's. This may change now.

Yes the argument is there, investment on the pitch is needed. But we are haemorrhaging money through wages in any event by having players not performing and on pretty hefty salaries.

Therefore lets get the playing side playing better, identify and sell on dead wood, buy in players with the money raised and i'm sure a small bit (no more than £10M) from the owners added in will have the desired effect on the playing side.

We fundamentally have to stop this stupid notion of buying 10 players for £150M, selling 12 players for £100M and thinking all the owners have to cough up is £50M every transfer window.

As long as we buy quality and not quantity or never having to look at the bargain bucket (Carlton Cole) from now on, it may take time, but we'll slowly but surely get back on track and with a new stadium it'll come back better than ever before. This maybe 2015 it maybe earlier or later.

January's transfer window will come too early in any event for the owners. They must be unclear as too whether Hodgson is the man. If our form continues in the vein of last Sunday's game then Hodgson may get himself a repreive and a chance to sign bette rplayers next summer. If the form continues in the same vein as the game against Blackpool, out he'll go and a new bloke will be in and next summer will be his first opportunity to have some cash. Either way it's going to take many months for the dust to settle and for NESV to make the decisions needed.

GOOD POST. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH TRYING TO RUN THE CLUB ON A PROPER FINANCIAL FOOTING. SO LETS BRING SOME OF OUR YOUTH PLAYERS THROUGH AND STOP WASTING MONEY LIKE WE HAVE DONE AT LIVERPOOL EVER SINCE THE DAY GRAEME SOUNESS WAS NAMED MANAGER. ONE POINT TO NOTE THOUGH FROM THE ARTICLES IN THE PAPERS TODAY IS - WOULD NESV TURN DOWN MASSIVE OFFERS FOR OUR BEST PLAYERS IN THE FUTURE? WOULD GERRARD HAVE GONE TO CHELSEA AND TORRES TO MANCITY/ CHELSEA/ BARCELONA UNDER NESV OWNERSHIP?

Liverpool should go for a very strong young striker with pace.
Lakuku of Belgium would be ideal as he is in the same mould as Drogba.

If LFC sign a player like this, Torres will have a different role in games that dossent involve as much physical aspects.
At the moment Torres has to play like drogba because LFC don't have enough quality through out the squad and this is not how Torres likes to play.

Liverpool need to play expansive football to get the best out of Torres. A player like Alonso has the ability to direct an expansive game of football through cleaver, clinical, accurate passing of the ball.

A player like Ashley Young would also add cutting edge to LFC attack that will benifit Torres and other attacking players.

Ins: Lukaku 12m
Young 20m
Banega 12m

Outs: All dead wood 10m

Line up:

- - - - - - - - Reina- - - - - - - - -
- Johnson- Skertel- Agger- Konchesky-
- -Kuyt- -Gerrard- -Banega- -Young- -
- - - - - -Torres- -Lukaku- - - - - - -

Subs: Jones, Carragher, Aurelio, Meireles, Poulsen, Lucas, Cole, Babel, Pacheo.

most of the 'dead wood' is on your bench

Turan
honda
banega
llorente
suarez
young
richards
shawcross

these are realistic signings as they are young, they will have a resale value if they move on in 2 or 3 years time and with honda a commercial value in the far east as well.forget about forlan, xavi ect the new owners have already let it be known that we will not be in the market for older players wanting one big contract before they retire.instead they will invest in youth and young players who offer good value for money in the long term.these guys know how to run a business correctly and you don't do that by squandering money.we will base our running of the like something similar to the way arsenal run things, money will always be available for the right player but i expect some kind of wage cap will be introduced within the club in the next 12 months.both options for the stadium will be thoroughly looked at before deciding on a new one or a redevelopment of anfield.the idea is to cut cost while at the same time increasing revenue which in theory should make the club self sufficent and in a strong position to challenge in every competition for years to come.

Will everyone stop being so negative its becoming annoying i looked at a post before and it says Liverpool will be in the championship next season.
we are only 3 points behind 7th place that's how tight the table is at the moment.
and everybody stop saying we are getting this amount of money in January or we won't get any because they won't spend any of there only money the club will have to make it bull* * .
lets be honest NESV are very quiet a lot will go on behind the scenes they are not going to tell everyone how much we our going to get because players we our after there transfer funds will go through the roof.
but usually when a takeover happens the team usually (not saying that we will) get a marquee signing

ed * ( can you state how much money we have for transfers? )
Parker Jnr ;) {ed's note - no one knows how much money will be available, it won't be done on that basis. Each signing will be judged on its own merits.}

On nearly every wishlist posted, people are suggesting we sell Ryan Babel, and they are also attaching an £8M price tag on his head. Assuming other clubs scout players before signing them, who in their right mind would pay us £8M for his services. I do believe (as I think most fans do) that he has all the attributes and the potential to be a great player. Its not the fact that more often than not he loses the ball, its the fact that he does nothing to then go and win it back!
Anyway,
Cahill is required to sort out our defence.
Banega for central midfield
Turan and Jarvis for the wings.

I know I haven't signed a striker, but i'd play 4-5-1 with a midfield trio of Banega, Gerrard and Meireles. And bust the bank in the summer to sign a top class CF rather than spend £5-£10M on mediocre player.

First time poster, long time reader. . these reports in the press today are getting my goat so thought I'd chuck my two pence worth in!

Nowhere amongst the stories in the Indy or the Mail does it say we won't be spending during the January window nor does it give any amounts that the new board will spend on player investment. It's rehashed quotes and story that NESV made during the week of their takeover. They always said that they wouldn't make themselves "Hostages to Fortune" by discussing transfer policy or releasing any significant amounts of funds we will have available to spend on players and they also described themselves as not being "sheikhs." These newspaper stories only confirm that and don't give me any cause for concern in the slightest. Sure, they want value for money, which over the past few years we haven't got when signing the likes of Ryan Babel and Alberto Aquilani for high amounts of dollar with little done to warrant it on the pitch. A careful, sensible and measured approach is welcomed by myself and is the way that all clubs should have to conduct themselves once FIFA's new regulations are in place. . for example, I doubt we will go spunking £40 million quid on Edin Dzeko when a £15 million pound bid for Honda may prove to be both financially and tactically benefical to the club in the long haul.

That's what I make of it all anyway.

Ignore the comments from the Telegraph and Independent they were taking from an interview at least two weeks ago rather than a New news story - cheap Journalism only!

The comments were said (making every penny or cent count) but they did not say they wouldn't spend any money.

They as always are just trying to sell stories; personally I'd rather people didn't know how much we had to spend otherwise prices would go up!

Dont be surprised to see a number of players not getting games being sold (older reserve players and any fringe 1st team players) if Roy is still in charge as he thinks we have too big a squad as it is.

As i posted yesterday. we don't need to spend hundreds of millions on foreign players from the dutch or french leagues when we all know these leagues are no where near as tough as the EPL, when it is clear we have quality in our youth.the best we can hope for realistically this season is a europa spot so why not use our youngsters and let them learn from the likes of carra nando and stevie the same as rush and fowler the youngster learning from the old master this wqould be a far better way of bringing in new players. we do need a couple of players for jan but we need proven EPL players who can make a difference and can help us fight up the table players like jarvis and kevin davies yeah theyre not huge marquee signings but they know how to dig in an get a result which at the min is exactly what we need. ed you agree ?

The Daily Telegraph is reporting that Kenny Dalglish has been to watch Lille attacking midfielder Eden Hazard.

According to the paper, the young Belgian starlet is a target for Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson and Dalglish was spotted at a match between Lille and Levski Sofia in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The 19-year-old has been tracked by a number of top European clubs including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United but he could be persuaded by his agent to move to Liverpool to get guaranteed regular first team.

The Telegraph believes that Hazard would cost in the region of £18million

Fair enough on the Rafa-glory years part, Ed.I embellished there.I guess what I meant by that was in many matches (particularly in the 2008 campaign) we played under Rafa.Remember Madrid, Porto, Chelsea, Villa, United etc.Rafa may have in many matches than few been cautious.R.Madrid at Anfield was vintage LFC. .the way that Rafa wanted this team to play, that's the ultimate goal he was working towards to.

Yes, initially (indeed, during some other years of his reign), he made it his priority to make us a hard nut to crack, but I believe that had more to do with not having the right personnel than the man's philosophy.And the reason why I, other fans and, I believe, you, gave him a chance was because of what he did with Los Che.He could coach beautiful football.

But please, I don't want this to degenerate into the Rafa vs Roy poppycock.I was merely using Rafa (4-0 Madrid;2-0 Scum;6-0 Newcastle;5-0 Villa; etc) as an example.

Rafa's time wasn't as glorious as it could have been, but the above matches were an indication of how he was moulding us to play.And Sunday's performance reminded me of those matches.Enough said about that.

I don't know what changed on Sunday, but I refuse to accept that it was Roy who oversaw that showing. .and I mean no disrepect to the man by that.

Ed, say it turns out that indeed the senior players have taken over;say they're the ones who oversaw Sunday's display, which gave many, including you, hope, would you laud the players for their initiative and desire to act in the best interests of LFC, or would you think their actions uncalled for?

Gracias,
Lombardi Cazorla

ps:-Kenny, instead of Roy, attends the Blackbarn-Sunderland game and, by all accounts, is observed taking notes
-Kenny's requested not to travel to Napoli (rumour has it that he, along with other senior players, was to meet someone we might be hearing a lot from sometime in the future)
-Roy gets so defensive about his position;makes statements as though he were a dying man (a dying man will clutch at a straw, the sayin goes)
-JWH remarks that Sunday will be special in more ways than one
-Come Blackbarn game, the lads are all fired up, happy, hungry and raring to go;go out there and batter Rovers to a pulp
Make of this what you will, folks. {ed's note - I don't believe Roy is in total control at all, I saw someone saying the players had a spring in their step because they were told he is not getting the blame for the poor performances. I hear that the spring in their step is due to the fact that they know he is going, Danny Murphy isn't the only one saying his training is boring, there were lots of complaints from the players and all of a sudden, last week the training changed. I don't like the idea of the players not listening to a manager, but I can certainly understand it after the disaster of the first few matches.}

I wouldn't worry about NESV playing down any spending in January or staments about not paying silly wages on older players. Presenting a solid fiscal policy will keep the price of any prospective targets down. Its that simple ( and quite reassuring when you think of it )

The other consideration is just how much money would you give ( or promise ) Roy if you're not convinced he is the man for the job? If Roy is still in the job come January, the best he can expect is enough to stave off relegation. Nothing more. NESV will keep their powder dry until a new man is in place.

My own two bits ( and using logic rather than a 'source' ) is that Roy will need to be replaced by mid Nov at the latest to give the new manager the time he needs to evaluate the squad and scout/ identify targets. If Roy is still there by then, then there is little point in replacing him ( once survival is ensured ) until the summer. .

I might also add, that Roy's initial record at Fulham was terrible. It took him a good 15 - 16 games to get their groove on, so NESV may actually be giving him that time. . .

It could be a long season ahead lads but better days are in sight at last

Fellow reds

The club HAVE been following Sanchez, but it is true that Roy wants Lennon and Young. .

{ed's note - I am struggling to follow you, glorious Rafa years? How many league titles did we win under Rafa?} we couldn't win league titles because of a lot of reasons. relying on two players instead of 4-6 like the others. .But that's in the past now

Ed, at least with Rafa we had a Tactical purpose on the field. every manager in the world will tell you that Rafa's tactical approach is amongst the most detailed and incisive in the world. . Yes we played defensively in some matched, especially cup matches, but that was all due to a thought our method, i.e when players were tired, not fully fit or the balance wasn't right. .we're NOT managers so we can't know what factors are involved for each individual managerial approach. .every FAN would love to see his club go and score 4 or 5 a game but that is fantasy. .Under Rafa, we have some of the most flattering score lines than the ten years before him. .Give credit where it is due. .and we should be thankful for Rafa to take the club to 2nd. .where pundits were bashing his subs and lineups, they were also saying he overachieved with Liverpool in 08-09. .he may have played defensive football many times, but when he played offensively, his tactical superiority and the team's dominance where both evident. when he went for the kill the team looked unbeatable. .remember Shaktar? remember wins against Chelsea, Manu, Inter . .amongst others. . within the space of a few days?. .At least under Rafa we didn't really look as bad even against top teams, as we looked against Blackpool and in the last 7 games (before an under par Bolton). Anyway, Rafa is gone. so much the better for Inter. and here we are.

Hodgeson (or. .'Woy the Gwim Weeper' as i like to call him) hasn't a clue. .i fully believe that the players went over his orders to play the last match. We need someone who will attack. .its not easy getting too many goals without conceding against even average teams in a top league. .trust me, as an ex-player, i know by experience (you run forward, leave a few yards behind you, and opponents slip into the space. .you often concede because of ambition!)

I'm tired of fans talking about overrated, over paid and under performing English players who they would like to see at the club. .i mean. .Ashley Young (or Lennon or Bentley?), for all his experience would be a BAD choice over someone like Turan or Sanchez even if he were half the price (and he would command at least 5-8 million more than either of them). .and SWP. .i mean really? now we're going for all the English has-beens? (not everyone is a Joe Cole). Now, many Fans will think i am an 'armchair fan' because i'n not English. .I am a lifelong Liverpool fan, and even though i have been to far fewer games than the average Mersey-sider, i live abroad, and have spent several times more money travelling for ONE game than a season ticket costs!

Fact is, their are much better foreign players available for a lot fewer pounds (dollars) with smaller wage demands, better work ethics, professionalism (or non rooni-ism) and more TALENT than MOST English players we see today. .that is because the system, the agents and the players themselves are not mentally build up in England, they are spoiled

I trust the owners and i understand that they would not have bought the club to decrease its value, so i'm willing to have patience, but we need a coach like Wenger, who will build a Shelvey into a future Gerrard, a Pacheco into a future Iniesta. A spearing into a Masherano (anyone else think we look brittle with him gone?)

We should Petotion the owners. .sell misfits like Poulsen and invest now!

Hope! {ed's note - sorry but I got bored at the beginning when your talk about us not knowing who is fit etc rambled on a bit long. That is absolute rubbish, if a player wasn't fit he would be rested, Rafa always played defensive football. I liked Rafa as a person, the charity work he did for the city of Liverpool was second to none and him and his wife will always have a place in my heart for that. But I used to hate watching us play under him, yes we dominated possession, but not in a Barca way, not in a 'get the ball and get at the opposition way', but in a 'get the ball and hold onto it and stop the opposition scoring' kind of way. That is not what football should be about, you should want to get the ball so that you can score, not so that the opposition can't.}

Its an interesting point you've got there but in my opinion CL has already gone as can't see city folding and the other 3 are pretty much dead certs. If torres wants to go let him i say as hes starting to be more trouble than he's worth. maybe its time to start from the ground up to ensure a solid structure rather than simply taking a huge gamble in january that could compromise the next few seasons. just my opinion, JRC

WHAT DO YOU THINK ED? {ed's note - I don't see how you read that from this story. They have said we won't live beyond our means and we won't waste money on older players on huge wages. What is the problem with that? It sounds like common sense to me.}

ED IF THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT LIVING WITHIN THE CLUBS MEANS BEFORE THEY HAVE EVEN INVESTED 20-25M OF THEIR OWN DOSH THEN ITS A BIT FRIGHTENING AS MOST LIVERPOOL FANS EXPECTED A FEW DECENT BUYS EITHER IN JANUARY OR THE SUMMER JUST TO GET THE CLUB GOING, I DO NOT EXPECT THEM TO BE SUGAR DADDIES EVERY WINDOW BUT I EXPECTED THEM TO INVEST WITH SOME OF THEIR OWN DOSH IN JANUARY TO MAKE A STATEMENT, SO DID 99% OF KOP FANS, ESPECIALLY AS LIVERPOOL WILL NOT BE MAKING A PROFIT TO BE ABLE TO BUY PLAYERS FOR A COUPLE YEARS YET, NOT AT ALL IF WE CANNOT GET INTO THE TOP FOUR TO RECEIVE THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MONEY.

I EXPECTED A 20-25M TRANSFER KITTY THIS JANUARY BUT THEY CLEARLY HAVE NO INTENTION OF EVER USING THEIR OWN DOSH. {ed's note - for starters there is nothing in there to say they won't spend their own dosh. For second, if that is what people expected then they need to get out more and think about what is best for the club. They spent hundreds of millions buying the club and will need to spend hundreds of millions on a stadium, that is the priority, not a couple of big name players so we can boast to our mates.

Ed whats the point in spending millions on a new stadium when the team are playing in the Championship? We need to bring in at least 2 quality players in Jan and another 3 or 4 in the summer. Get things right on the pitch then get the stadium and this is not about boasting to our mates it's about getting Liverpool back to where we belong "at the top"
Aroc {ed's note - the players are good enough to stay in the Prem, it is not about buying players at all, it is about getting those we have performing better. We have a large amount of players that are clearly surplus to sell anyway, why do we require outside investment to spend?}

From someone I know that works at the club- they met the new owners and had a chat with all staff at melwood and said in aconversation. They (NESV) under promise and over achieve. They have also said that they take being sucessfull very seriously. I know baseball is a different game and one most of us coudn't care leass about, but the Red Sox were in a far worse state than LFC were when NESV took over them, and I know everyone says that american sports are different as they have a wage cap and a salary cap, but let me tell you the money being splahed about in american sport dwarfes that of any sport in the world. Top earner in the prem I think is Rooney at 250,000 a week which is a nice little eraner i think you would agree. According to what I have read recently Basball players have and can ern roughly (thanks partly to that fool hicks) 230 million for there entire contract with a team, Contracts run for around about 5-6 years that's about 1 million a week, there or there abouts anyway. So NESV enterd a a far more astronomical market when they took over a baseball team. Personally I like what NESV said, its resposible and it dosent give you a limit either way on what they spend, its an open ended statement saying they will buy players who are worth buying which from what I have read is what they have done in the past all be it in another sport.

Will people please not equate the spending on transfers with production of a good side. Marquee signings are a waste. The new owners are right not to spend huge amounts as by doing so we will only repeat the mistakes of the H and G era- lots of debt and expensive players not performing to their level.
Manure have just been promised 100 million but all it will do is increase their debt to 820 million. The bubble there is ready to explode and the Rooney incident re-enforces this. Lets build like Shanks did , it may take a few years it may not but the seeds are already laid and starting to sprout.
Following Chelsea who now have invested for the future by taking on the best youngsters and their training, will provide stability in the long run. Get behind this team who are improving. The manager may need changing but the worst is over .Has anyone thought to ask Mr Broughton to change his allegiance to the LFC.
Only fools spend and spend and god help their clubs when the money dries up and FIFA bring in tighter controls.For LFC the only way is up now. Manure, City beware the fall!

There seems to be a lot of panic about the comment NESV are not going to spend a lot of money on players that have no resaleable price ie Forlan who is 31 and looking for one last payday.

However if you look at the Red Sox history then NESV made a bid of 51.1 million dollars for a 27 year old pitcher as he had the skills, was the right age and has a sell on value

Now I'm not saying we'll spend that kind of cash on player but from what I've read previously NESV have said they will spend money on the right player at the right age.
So we may not get Forlan but if we get
one of mata, turan, defour, sanchez & a decent young striker that fight into our transfer budget and wage bill then surely that good news.

They've owned the club for apporx a month and people are already wondering if we going to be stuffed by more yanks but they always said 'Judge us by our actions'

So lets wait until Jan before more pessimists come out of woodwork and starting saying we doomed again!

Liverpool targets:
Afellay, Defour, A.Young, Marin, Sahin, Martinez, Hulk, Gervinho, Hazard, Hoarou, Erdinc, Jovetic, Honda, Turan, Zarate, Sanchez, Keisling, Dzsudzak, Bent, Cole, Navas, Pastore, Lavezzi, Annan, Hamsik.
RH won't be able to sign for over inflated prices, but the better deals for the club.

NESV have said roy will be given 30 mil in both january and the summer, 60 mil in total. roy has said he thinks we are 5/ 6 players off challenging for a title.
Gk- reina-good enough
RB- johnson- maybe pushed onto wing, need a new right back
CB's- agger/ JC/ Skrtel/ the greek- need atleast 1 new CB if not two, carra and greek will retire soon both getting on.
LB- Konchesky- needs to be replaced
Rw-Kuyt/ Maxi - need a new one, or johnson? both getting on and kuyt not quick enough neither of them add width either.
CDM- Lucas/ gerrard/ merieles- i think that spearing should get more playing time, get lucas out, gerrard and another player ?
LM- Babel/ Cole/ jova- i think cole should definitely be playing more central, behind torres and we are desperate for a left winger jova offers no width at all!
AM- Gerrard/ Merieles/ Cole - should play gerrard and merieles CDM at the moment and cole off . .
St- El Nino- brilliant, but desperately need another world class striker so we can change the formation about because since rafa came we been playing the same formation, maybe time for a change? really come on, we tried it against man city playing with a 4-4-2 but torres and ngog? nothing would happen? say torres and aguero (for example) and you are bound to get goals, this would also allow gerrard to sit and pick balls out

team in january- 4-5-1
reina
Lahm? £15-20
Carra
skrtel
Marcelo?£7
johnson- would be like a new signing
gerrard
merieles
young? £14-17
cole
torres
this would be around £40 mil
sales from- babel £7 and maxi £4-5
would leave us with around £30-40 mil in summer to buy hangeland or shawcross, and a new striker.

come next january we would have
reina
lahm
hangeland
skrtel/ shawcross
marcelo
johnson-buy a new right winger jan 2012
gerrard
merieles
ashley young
cole if playing a 4-5-1 or new striker if playing 4-4-2
torres.

thanks,

New England Sports Ventures will not make a marquee signing in January and intend to cut out Liverpool's high wage spending on older players, according to the The Telegraph.

The John W. Henry-led consortium intend to tighten the purse strings following their £300 million takeover this month. Although their arrival has freed about £36m per year in interest fees, this money will not all be re-invested in the playing staff.

The Americans are understood to be dismayed at long-term contracts handed to veterans such as Jamie Carragher. They have also voiced concern at the purchase of players such as Robbie Keane and Fernando Morientes without re-sell value due to their age.

Speaking upon his arrival, Henry said: "We have to be smart.

"We have to be more efficient. When we spend a dollar it has to be wisely. We cannot afford player contracts that do not make long-term sense. We have to be smart, bold, aggressive. It's a great challenge."

Supporters had their fingers crossed for the arrival of superstars in the coming transfer windows but NESV are only prepared to modestly bank roll the arrival of players.

Emerging midfielders Eden Hazard, Steven Defour and Ibrahim Affelay have all been scouted as the club looks to copy Arsenal and Manchester United's transfer policy of only spending big on starlets.

QUESTION FOR EDITOR, ED I KNOW THIS MAKES SENSE BUT DO YOU HAVE A BAD FEELING THAT THIS CLUB IS GOING TO BE TREATED MORE LIKE A BUSINESS THAN A TOP FOUR FOOTY CLUB?

NO ONE REALLY EXPECTED THESE GUYS TO BLOW 20-25M ON PLAYERS IN THE WINDOWS BUT IF THIS STORY IS TRUE, ARE LIVERPOOL IN FOR A TORRID TIME WITH MORE YANKS? I THINK THESE FELLA'S WILL END UP BEING TIGHTER THAN HICKS.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ED? {ed's note - I don't see how you read that from this story. They have said we won't live beyond our means and we won't waste money on older players on huge wages. What is the problem with that? It sounds like common sense to me.}

I have posted before on this subject. and although the timescales may vary I do not believe that Roy is the man to lead us forward. He is. as i have stated before. a mid table manager. with mid table methodologies. A decent man maybe. but lacking the characteristics that we so desperately need now. This season is by far the most defining one we have faced in many years. we have to get right our new players brought in and we have to shape the club for the future.

Anyone who thinks that there will be huge outlay in the 2 transfer windows approaching is mistaken. NESV will adopt a much more sensible approach and over a longer term. just throwing money at the problem isn't the solution.

There will be signings, but they will be considered and we have to live within our means now. the days are gone when we spent millions on players approaching 30 and gave them long contracts.

Now that H+G are gone, and the debt with them we have a wonderful opportunity to stabilise the club on a sound financial footing that can only be good for the future. .and i can put a wish list up the same as anyone else.

I can live with the fact that this season may not be our best. but we are planning for the future. the long term future. not just the next game.

NESV have already begun to shape the board, they are sifting through the finances to determine a level that means we can deliver on the pitch without returning to the H+G days.

What i think(and hope) will happen is that.

a new manager by december. either rijkaard or pellegrini fine by me

new signings to be young (ish) players. and not on long term contracts

some sort of decision on the ground. this is where we need development. to be able to compete financially month on month with other big teams.

This will not happen overnight. but i very much doubt that they shall give Roy millions to spend. i honestly believe they will back the new manager and faith in roy is dwindling

"Sunday's performance, "

I believe I have already posted that there was a strong rumour that the players had a meeting before last Sundays match.I suspect you are correct in thinking it was the players who decided the change of tactics and not Roy.
Strangely I seem to remember some rather negative football being played in Rafa's later years and a championship being blown with silly substitutions.

Totally agree with the ED that our main concern was removal of the debt to allow profits to be invested back into the club instead of the banks. I see some people wish peter lim had taken over but that is just plain shortsightedness (is that even a word?) anyway as many of you have said in the past the club should be able to run on its own revenue so in that sense i believe NESV are spot on. The players we are most likely to sign in January are those who have contacts coming to an end and are not playing Champions League football. Players like Mata and Benega might be realistic in Summer, but while Valencia are in the Champions League it would take huge bids to get them.

So in saying that, if we were to go after some bigger name players, it would more likely be Turan, Honda, Young, Defour, Afellay, Sanchez, Forlan, Aguero. I think we would be lucky to get 1, maybe 2 of those though.

Guys it's just paper talking. All NESV said that they wana spend properly not splashing cash out which I think is good. This mean if they think the player is worth £30 million they will gv £30 if they think it's overprice then they will not pay anything

()()

27 Oct 2010 10:56:02
So apperently no money gonna be available in jan but then that is paper talk , If we havent than that is ridculous because that is one of the main reasons we needed new owners to supply the cash for players , cause lets be honest we need new players! Peter lim was gona at least give us £40m for new players in jan , so hopefully NESV can match that , cause if we don't get new players soon we are gona be a long way away from champions league football. They need to invest now! {ed's note - we do not need someone to invest money in the club for players, all we needed was the debt removed so that we can spend our profits and money received from sales on them.}

Sunday's performance, whilst certainly far from vintage-Liverpool, was highly satisfactory.The pressing, closing down, high-tempo passing, the intensity, passion, flair etc was lovely.But, ironically, that's the problem.

You see, I don't believe for once that it was Hodgson who masterminded that display.It couldn't have been.
Here is a man (Roy) who, in his whole career, has coached ultradefensive football of the highest order;an Allen Wade disciple.For over 30 years in the game, he's set his teams up to try and stop the opposition, with the hope of nicking a goal should an opportunity presents itself.Basically, "play it not to lose" rather than "to win it".That's priority number one.
"Let them come;when you win it, hoof it upfield forthwith to the target man".

This has been his approach all his life. .Malmo, Fulham, Inter etc.
And some three months into his LFC reign, his methods came under severe scrutiny and reproach. .to which he fiercely responded by saying how these methods have put him "in good steady wherever he's coached".That the players, and not his methods, were at fault for the slump.

He, therefore, was "not going to change them".He then proceeded to let everyone know of the accolades he won last season, not to mention the "respect he has all over Europe".
Simply, what Roy says is that his ways have worked for him in the past;he's won the respect of European football. .his accolades prove as much.Therefore, why should it be different with Liverpool?It's not my tactics, it's the players.I'm a good coach.

Sunday October 24 2010, Liverpool go on to produce a performance nearly reminiscent of the glorious Rafa years.Pressing high up the field, quickly closing down the opposition, moving the ball with great intensity, purpose, pace, incisiveness, flair and creativity, fullbacks literally bombing down the flanks, super quick counterattacking, mobility, playing the ball down, and an offensive, let's batter-them mentality.

Now, where did the turnabout come from?What changed?Did Roy do a complete 180?Did he go from black to white overnight?Why, after so fiercely maintaining that he would stick to his methods till they work, did he suddenly decide to go it Rafa?

Well, he didn't.If there's one thing I've learned about Roy is that he's a man who sticks to his guns, and, morever, has a high regard for (his) personal pride.So, I couldn't imagine him standing up and say "my methods have been a disaster.I relent". .definitely not after reaffirming his steadfastness on them.
So the question still remains:why did the players suddenly go about it the manner Rafa taught them, which is well and truly at variance with what Roy advocates?

Well, let me conjecture.
Some time last week the players held a council of war, headed by the seniors.In the meeting, they all analysed the the teams horrible displays and diagnosed that Roy/ his methods was the main, if not only, problem here.Consensus was that the squad was wrongly coached, certain players unfairly singled out, the manager's not protecting the players, and his comments in the media was doing more harm than good.
They there and then resolved that, from Blackbarn on-in the best interests of LFC, its fans and themselves-they'd go about their jobs the best way they know how;the best way they saw fit, and the best way they've done it before.
The manager, if needs be, we will override.

Come Sunday the boys were all fired up, happy, and were raring to go.
My conclusion:Roy, for all practical purposes, is a lameduck at Anfield.
Well, I could be embarrasingly off the mark here, but hey, an opinion is opinion. .Blair will back me up on that.

And Ed, I'd like to hear what you make of the sudden turnabout on Sunday, with respect to Roy's philosophy of the game, and his being adament that he will not change his methods.

Gracias,
Lombardi Cazorla {ed's note - I am struggling to follow you, glorious Rafa years? How many league titles did we win under Rafa? That is the only trophy that matters, without that no year can be considered glorious, the bread and butter is the prime consideration. Secondly Rafa sending out teams to batter others? What? When? For about 10 games after his negative defensive play-not-to-lose tactics had already cost us the league maybe, the rest of the time we played defensively, far too deep, a counter-attacking game. I do agree this is not like Roy either though, but then why bother listening to a manager you know is nothing more than a stop-gap?}

I hear NESV won't be spending big in january if at all. i say that's a good thing as all you ever get in january is overpriced players. i would rather wait until the end of the season so we can flog the dead wood and have a real transfer budget and a world class manager to spend it. JRC

No point in all this , about are we gona sign sanchez or a good striker the answer is no , because NESV , have clearly stated what some1 put further down , about them not making any marquee signings in JANUARY. .and they plan to spend money on younger players to , and they are astonished on the amount of players who are on big wage bills who are to old !and they have expressed that we will not spend big in january but will in the summer , and need to get younger in the team! ! DONT BELIEVE ME? , ITS IN THE INDEPENDENT PAPER , SKYSPORTS NEWS , AND FURTHER DOWN! ! !

Can anyone actually provide quotes from NESV saying they won't spend money in January? The only actual quotes from NESV that I've read state that there will be money available to invest in the squad. They won't throw silly amounts around but anyone suggesting they won't spend at all in January is deluded.

From the Independent

Hodgson to be denied big signing in January
Roy Hodgson, the Liverpool manager, may have seen his side claim a much needed victory at the weekend but if he was hoping for further good news he would have been sorely disappointed yesterday. The Anfield club's new owners, New England Sports Ventures, revealed that they will not sanction any big-money signings in the January transfer window.

The news will also dismay Liverpool's supporters, who would have hoped that after the end of Tom Hicks' and George Gillett's tenure, a big signing could mark the start of a new era. Having examined Liverpool's books, the American owners are believed to be concerned by what they regard as over-spending in recent seasons: Hodgson himself spent £25m in his first summer in charge.

And although the purchase of the club has freed up funds for Hodgson to make signings, NESV have made clear that they expect value for money. "We have to be smart, " said John W Henry, the group's principal backer, after the deal was completed. "We have to be more efficient. When we spend a dollar, it has to be wisely. We cannot afford player contracts that do not make long-term sense." The 61-year-old has made it clear already that he is not happy with the number of older players at the club who are earning big money on long contracts.

Henry is expected to play a hands-on role at Anfield, assessing Hodgson's transfer targets and setting budgets for contract renegotiations. His organisation is not thought to blame the former Fulham man for Liverpool's travails this season, but they do see it as evidence that a closer eye is needed on the club's transfer business.

Henry, a follower of Sabermetrics, the method of assessing players made famous by the book Moneyball, which explained how baseball's Oakland Athletics consistently overperformed in relation to their wage bill, is worried that Liverpool are failing to match where their spending suggests they should be in a league where wage bill generally mirrors league position.
Liverpool have the fourth-highest wage bill in the league but are currently marooned in 18th. "At the Red Sox, we invested a lot in management and the scouting system, " said NESV chairman Tom Werner. "We believe the foundation of any good sports club has to be the experience, valuation and understanding of scouting."

So is it good news there will be no rash signnings and save their money for the summer and perhps we'll just make a single signing in Jan. A striker bought or on loan?

Does this mean that Roy is under more pressure than we thought as he has to prove he can motivate the current squad beforehe can spend any money?

Belivable / Unbelievable

News from SSN this morning states that NESV have said there will be NO marquee signings, they are looking at players to enhance the team for now and the future, along the lines of what Arsenal do. Will this be enough for this season? will this placate Gerrard, Torres & Reina? Ed what are your thoughts? If this is the case, does this mean even more youngsters, along the lines of Shelvey e.g Wickham.

I have seen several people are asking about Adam Szalai. . i think, I can help you on that. . i have seen him play for Real Madrid (jr side), stuttgart and also Mainz. . To tell you the truth. . he is a good player. Much better than we have now, except Torres. . He can definitely be one of the good players, for future, if trained well. he has that potential. . But at current circumstances, he is not exactly, what we need. But he is better than N'gog, babel, etc. .

Guys. . I am not a Brit. bad enough a Yonk but I love the Pool. Gotta say your blaming tabloid obsessed media in England does more harm to not only your National Team but also players in the Prem. Players we are supposed to support.

Rumors are great just bashing our players is counterproductive.

Our team needs confidence which last time I went to the market was unavailable at any price.

For what it is worth, Lucas played great last week. . Meireles did his job well and the Greek saved our ass. All players that get bashed all the time on this site.

Sorry for the rant but maybe backing Roy and the team this season might produce more than spending 30M on player X? ?

Oh. . my player X wish would be Honda. .he works his ass off and has mad skills.

The difference between Vder Vaart and Meireles is 4 mill in transfer fee only. VdV makes 100K a week meireles half that at best. so overall Meireles was cheaper

JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW
BUDGET: £30M
OUTS:
Babel £8M
Maxi £5M
INS:
Defour £12M
Sanchez £17M
Turan £14M
NET SPEND: £30M
These 3 players have at some point stated their desire to leave their respected clubs and would be terrific signings for us. They would provide us with enough creativity and flair to excite the fans once again and help make a push for a champs league spot (providing its still possible after the new year)

He's not an AM, he's a deep lying CM, like Xabi Alonso. Roy plays him out of position most of the time. I assume he wasn't Roy's buy, hence why he doesn't know how to play him.

I hope our transfer values change under the new ownership.

Lets see 1 or 2 first team regulars come in every season. (Hoping for a 20 mil+ striker and 10-15 mil winger this season.) I'm not saying we should do a Man city and throw money at everything and hope it gels. Take what we have an make it stronger.

I also hope that when we bring in the young folk they are given a chance. .come on shelvey and wilson. They need game time to show their true potential. We are wasting them in the reserve league and think that they can inject a bit of the hunger that we have been lacking these past dismal months. I'm also taking a look at the Kelly, Spearing and Pacheco to get on the field and listen to YNWA chanting from the stands because if that doesn't get their ass in gear then nothing will.

We also need to ditch this idea that we don't have a good enough squad to compete for the top 4. Fact is. .we don't have a good enough team to compete for the league. Get our 11 competing then we can think about our back up as I think that this is Rafa's major downfall.

If we get someone (Llorente or someone of that callibre up front) that we can play beside Torres and a quality winger with pace that can cross(mata or hernandez and that's only even looking at Valencia) then we can position ourself with the potential to WALK ON!

TBH u guys are disillusion with the SWP rants on here because you might as well give him a lollipop man to help him cross the street then maybe he can help with a football because the man would benefit alot.

I've heard the owners (or at least those in the position to discuss with the powers that be) read sites exactly like our beloved, to which I give the ED's a massive amount of respect and thanks. I hail them to get us out of this rut. Give the manager their backing and WALK ON. . WALK ON. . WITH HOPE IN YOUR HEARTS. . because with fans like us they shall never let the team walk alone and can always count on our support (or at least mine and many like me) if they always put our beloved club 1st.

Steely (slightly tipsy and going for a sleep)

Liverpool appear to have lost the battle to sign Standard Leige midfielder Stephen Defour after he declared his desire to move to Man Utd, paving the way for a £12m deal to be completed either in January or the Summer transfer window.

The news will be a blow to Roy Hodgson, who made the player his top midfield target. He will now turn his attentions elsewhere and the favourite seems to be Udinese midfielder Gokhan Inler, who would be viewed as a good second choice. Inler is renowned for his strength, passing, creative ability, work-rate and aggressive style which would suit the Premier League. Reports suggest that Udinese would be willing to let their star man leave for around 14m Euros (£12m). Should a move for Inler fail, Hodgson will attempt to bring Lassana Diarra back to England from Real Madrid, however an asking price of £20m could put Hodgson off.

Reports suggest that Nuri Sahin could become a prime target for the Merseysiders. The talented Turkey playmaker has been the subject of interest from Barcelona and Tottenham, but Liverpool could move swiftly for the £6m-rated midfielder in order to strengthen their midfield options.

With Owen looking like he may be off from manure in either jan or the summer do you thin we should have him back? ?

A part of me thinks no, because he went to manure, but another side to me thins he will have a lot to make up to the club and fans and works his socks off and could actually be good for us. .

I disagree Blair. I would not welcome back Owen with open arms but I think I could give him a second chance. He wanted to come back to the Northwest and none of the other clubs in the area would have signed him. I still cannot understand why Rafa did not sign Owen last summer. I think it is pretty clear that Carra and Stevie do not hold grudges because he played in that Carra tribute thing. And we could certainly use a striker.

What do you guys think of this back four?
Johnson- - - - - - - Kelly- -Agger- - - - - - - Gibbs
Gibbs would be the only addition because I do not see a left back in our squad that is good enough/ ready to play PL football (Robinson and Mavinga have potential but not the finished product). Gibbs is ready but he continues to sit behind Clichy so I think he would jump at the move and 10m should be enough for Arsenal to let us talk to him. And I know Johno gets a lot of shaft on this site but I think when he is on form he is a very good modern right back. Central pairing is obvious for me. Both can play a good pass and are fast and strong enough to shut down opposing attackers. Opinions?

Gibbs is injured, otherwise im sure he'd start, which is why we should buy clichy who is slightly better and only 24ish

Anybody else think we should sell torres? we could bring in 2 20m plus strikers out of the fee alone. we all know hes going to get injured again. not very often liverpool make profit on a player either . usually sell them at half the purchase price, imo, it would benefit all parties involved, we get a wad of cash to splash, torres can go back to spain where he prefers his football, maybe even italy, and the club to buy him gets a world class striker, albeit while around 40m out of pocket. best thing is, we wouldn't have a 100k a week striker out injured half the season, we would have 2 hungry competitive strikers, both fighting for a starting spot. even though i would hate to see the best signing, we have made in recent years, leave, in my opinion it would be for the best
