One for Ed002, maybe. (although I fear a "that's why we don't talk money" response! )

With the astronomical fees being paid now, how (indeed are? ) are footballers insured by their clubs
a) against career-ending injury
b) against injuries from which they are never quite the same again.
I can't even imagine what the annual insurance costs on a £75M defender might be, given that injuries are pretty common. What sort of money do clubs spend here?

Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - (a) Yes, (b) No. I am not interested in discussing the costs.}

Shame, I would have been very interested to hear that answer.

I know the young lad from the academy was reportedly given 1ml payout after a car accident ended his career about ten years ago.

How about

c) what coverage do clubs receive when players are injured on International duty - imagine Spurs without Kane for 6 months due to an injury on England duty - that would cost them CL football for sure.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It depends on which country they play for. Countries like Germany, FRance, Spain etc. are well insured, the African countries are not so the club would need to take additional insurance if they wish.}

Just reading Lemar to Liverpool is back on for January not saying it's true, but would we spend that much so soon after spending 75 million?

If we sell couts then why not? We would have the money and the Eds have said he is one under consideration.

Don’t get me wrong I’d take him no problem.

Probably Arsenal bound? - it' that time of year, linked with everybody under the sun, the amount of names I've read about us been linked with recently is incredible, I'm guessing a good 9 out of 10 of them aren't true, click baiting news websites half of it. In the eds word I trust.

I would rather sign Brandt at a fraction of the price, but it would be a summer move. No way Bayer let him go in January. Lemar is way over priced imo. Better and equally good options like Draxler, Brandt available at a fraction of the price.

If we had a choice of Lemar for around 90M or Draxler for 40M I know which one I would take.

{Ed025's Note - tell us then mate..

29 Dec 2017 09:36:39
Do you guys reckon Monaco will still be asking for the 90m they quoted in the summer or will that fee drop considering his form has dipped as well?

{Ed025's Note - dont let the fee cloud the issue jimmy..

I get the feeling all liverpool fans secretly wish to be accountants.

A2, secretly wish to be accountants?
I have the misfortune of actually being one. And it does take the fun out of the transfer season when u become obsessed with numbers. I am still fuming about VVD's transfer fee and did not celebrate the signing like so many others did.

IB, Your other half must have received an exciting Christmas gift.
We don’t know all the income and expenditure but have faith the people who need to are making the right decisions. Coutinho is likely to go and if we spend money on areas of the team which will take us to the next level surely it’s what matters. Plus in the summer or the next summer prices will likely have gone even higher.

the good thing is we are now spending whatever it takes to get our top targets. Spending more for Lemar, if he's the player Klopp wants, is better than spending less on Draxler who he doesn't want. That is a sign of the owners backing the manager and not saying, we can't afford the guy you want but you can have this bargain version. Reds fans complained for years about exactly that sort of transfer policy, so it's pretty baffling to now complain about us spending big. The fact is if we want to compete with the other big spenders then this is PRECISELY what we SHOULD be doing.

@ Salah, have you not been reading this site or what? Lemar is not just a random name, there is verified interest in him from Liverpool and the price has proved too rich for Arsenal, who will probably go for Brandt or Draxler instead. Personally, I am thrilled that we are finally putting up the money to secure our prime targets instead of pussyfooting about and low-balling clubs as we did plenty of times in the past.

If any of the EDDS are around,
Have we got any interest in GELSON MARTINS, I think he would be a better option than THOMAS LEMAR, if COUTINHO leaves.

Agree0 Disagree4

{Ed002's Note - In January 2017 Sporting made it clear to the one club who enquired that Gelson Martins is not for sale even at the €60M minimum realease fee that he has for Iberian clubs and quoted them an outrageous €120M. Bayern Munich, Juventus, Barcelona and Manchester United all have shown interest in the player whilst. Real Madrid and Liverpool had the player watched. Chelsea and Manchester City consider the price far, far too high. I am not aware of any approach from Liverpool but they have watched him. Again, he is a right winger so not a suitable Coutinho replacement.}

29 Dec 2017 16:13:55
Brandt is a winger and I believe Salah was the secondary choice. I don't think there would be much interest there now. In the summer Lemar was not pursued because Coutinho was staying, it ain't any money they are spending, but would prefer club in the top four than a club in administration over mishandled finances. Folks seem to have short memories that nearly 7 years ago we were at the brink of going into administration with Hicks and Gillett.

The club could bring in Messi and fans would still want Ronaldo too. These owners have done plenty, rebuilding the stadium and backing Klopp to rebuild the squad. Plus Lemar is CL cup tied, so it would make no sense to let Pipco go and then have less quality in the CL. If the club was silly enough to approach Goretzka without Schalke's permission then a transfer ban would be coming. Let's not forget the saga we faced with the Van Dijk incident.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Salah was fourth choice.}

29 Dec 2017 16:40:32
He's done ok for 4th choice but would it mean that he maybe feels less wanted than if he had been 1st choice and look to move on as soon as a better offer came along - I know Ed002 you have said that he's courted Real Madrid - or even that despite his success Klopp may feel that he is replaceable should the former 1st or 2nd choice become available?

Agree0 Disagree2

{Ed002's Note - I don't think anyone thinking along those lines.}

29 Dec 2017 16:45:30
That fourth choice worked out quite well, just hopefully people understand that can't keep throwing out names of players who play positions that are solidified at the club.

Would you mind sharing who were choices 2 and 3? Thanks Eds have a Happy New Year!

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - This was all dealt with in the summer - move on.}

29 Dec 2017 18:38:42
Heard Spurs might have a summer interest in Lallana, any truth?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - A year ago they did.}

29 Dec 2017 20:51:29
Jurgen Meister - what you talking about mate, you obviously didn't read my post did you? I never said Lemar was a random name I was saying a lot of random names are been banded about because of the time of year. Yes we have interest in Lemar, we have interest in many players it doesn't mean we'll go sign them all though does it.

You say he's too expensive for Arsenal? what makes you think that? People would've said the same about us before we got VVD for 75 Million.

It's funny, now we've spent that much on VVD certain people expect us to go spend that much on the next 5 targets. We're not Man city, PSG, Barcelona etc, we can only spend what we're allowed to spend. Guaranteed if we went and spent 10 Million on a player similar to Lemar in January people would moan about it because it's not a 70+ million signing.

Spending 10m on an absolute world beater is exactly what I was hoping for when we appointed Klopp. He found some absolute gems for Dortmund.

29 Dec 2017 22:39:49
I know that we were linked with Chilwell of Leicester but we went for Robertson instead. I have seen Chilwell play a few times this season and his performances remind me of a young Gareth Bale when he played for Southampton. Is he still on our radar? If so can we get him?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - No.}

29 Dec 2017 23:23:50
Dick van Dyke and Hedy Lamar for Coutinho? Seems like good business given Phil's departure is pretty certain. Van Dijk has to be an improvement on what we've got and Lemar is a regular for France (possibly the best national side in the World) . A top keeper would be great but I'd love us to get a Kante/ Matic type DM to protect our defence. In reality, it's likely that we won't strengthen at all apart from Virgil.
