Eds,

Anything in us going after Joao Mario? Seems a decent player.

Thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable21

{Ed002's Note - Sporting priced Joao Mario out of a move to Napoli in the summer and unless they look to price him more realistically nobody will be calling. There is interest from four clubs in England, including Chelsea who have held discussions, and PSG who are in negotiations but price is the sticking point. Liverpool are not one of those clubs.}

03 Jun 2016 23:30:31
An excellent player, but I suspect out of our reach.

Thanks ed,

I was wondering with many of our targets or so called targets like emre mor and Bastien being quite young, and a lot of fans crying out for a big name player (I myself don't think we need a big name just hungry players who want to win) is there any of the big names being spoken too or anything happening with any big names that you know of?

Agree0 Disagree19

{Ed002's Note - It is a "subjective" term. Bastien is of course a Rodgers target, but as you say young.}

03 Jun 2016 20:43:37
Ed's is there any truth that we put in a bid for Vardy but we couldn't trigger his release clause because we are not in the CL and Arsenal are?

Believable3 Unbelievable27

{Ed002's Note - I really have no idea. If Liverpool are after Vardy then I would expect him to be first pick which could I guess see the likes of Sturridge and Firmino considering their future - given the club also has Origi and Ings even before the Benteke's etc.. It makes little sense to me but no one has mentioned to me that this has happened. Cerianly there is interest from elsewhere in the Premier League.}

03 Jun 2016 20:53:49
Thanks.

We really don't need a striker. We have plenty even with Benteke leaving (probably) .

I'd think Arsenal will probably take a look though since they need a forward.

03 Jun 2016 21:43:04
Apparently it's Arsenal who have bid for Vardy.

With Xhaka and a fit Wiltshire. Add Rodriquez at LB from Wolfsburg and now Vardy, I'd be tempted to say title favourites.

Agree9 Disagree28

03 Jun 2016 23:31:37
Rodriguez is like Moreno defensively, and Wilshere? That boy is always injured and honestly, I don't see what all the fuss is about him.

Agree9 Disagree20

04 Jun 2016 00:10:33
Rodriguez can't defend any better than Monreal but is better going forward, Wilshere is barely a footballer, Vardy is a 29 year old whose game relies almost 100% on pace and has had one good season in his career, and Xhaka for all the man-loving he's received from Harry, is a very limited footballer and a red card waiting to happen. Coquelin is a better defensive midfielder by far.

I really don't see how they have strengthened significantly if at all. I'm far more concerned by a very young and improving Spurs side, and a bankrolled Man City led by Guardiola, than I am by a team of serial bottlers with a few high priced gambles added in amongst them.

Agree10 Disagree24

04 Jun 2016 00:52:54
Wilshere is a myth. Most overrated player ever. If he wasn't English, he'd not be talked about so much.

Agree13 Disagree18

{Ed007's Note - I fell out my bed at title favourites! }

04 Jun 2016 01:58:37
Well said MK.

We are title favourites IMO.

Agree6 Disagree24

04 Jun 2016 06:00:18
I remember when wilshere outshone an entire Barcelona team. Admittedly his injury record and lifestyle is terrible but to say he's 'barely a footballer' and 'most overrated ever' is embarrassing. On his day he's a joy to watch and I hope he gets back to a fit wilshere of 2/ 3 years ago.

Agree2 Disagree23

{Ed001's Note - sorry but you are talking crap. He has never done any such thing.}

04 Jun 2016 07:35:56
Rubbish.

He had 1 good game against Barca, but then does that make you world class? Has no one else ever played well against Barca?

What about when Arbeloa was switched to left back and completely stifled Messi nearly 10 years ago? Did that all of a sudden make Arbeloa the best full back the world has ever seen.?

As a Welshman I'm actually pleased with the way Wilshere is treated like a god, I'm praying it means he's guaranteed a starting spot against us in 2 weeks time. Much rather him than someone who is on form and fit.

Agree3 Disagree17

{Ed001's Note - Wilshere can't even control the ball, which is why he is constantly injured, he is always overstretching himself trying to keep the ball. As soon as he gets tackled it means an injury as he has no spare capacity in his muscles to ride the impact. There is absolutely nothing special about Wilshere.}

04 Jun 2016 10:01:42
I'm glad you agree Ed.

Listening to talksport and most of the callers that phone in, everyone seems to idolise Wilshere.

I really do not get all the fuss. But again like I said, I hope he is in the starting line up against us.

Agree3 Disagree17

04 Jun 2016 11:46:30
Wilshere runs like he's getting electrocuted. On his day he's not a bad player but he's got to be behind santi, xhaka, elneny, Ramsey and coquelin in the a Arsenal pecking order. If they get vardy keep Sanchez, ozil at ten then I think they just need a winger on the right to be contenders. Walcott is not good enough and oxlade is never fit either. Giroud is not a bad plan b.
Their defence is weak mind, don't rate any of their defenders, bellerin is the best of a bad bunch, purely because his pace makes up for a lot of shortcomings.

If you want to know what is wrong with English players and English football as a whole, I got two names for you: Jack Wilshere and Micah Richards. Overly hyped BUT severely aweful players.

Agree1 Disagree13

04 Jun 2016 16:16:13
I'm not saying he's world class or particularly good of late but he's definitely got talent. And ed001 I usually agree with you but I don't this time. I fear his career will patter out which in my book is a shame because when he first broke into arsenals team he looked like he was going to be devastatingly good.

Agree0 Disagree11

{Ed001's Note - he never looked any good, people just wet themselves over any half decent English player.}

04 Jun 2016 20:35:18
I don't agree about Xhaka. He's a quality hard working midfielder. Yes he's prone to red cards but only because he constantly harasses and bullies, sometimes a bit overly agressively. He is the type of player we are sadly missing from our midfield. I agree about the other Arsenal players.

If arsenal are are spending big money on a striker and end up finally doing it on Vardy I think they have lost the plot. Yes he is good, even if he has had one good season. But surely they can attract and afford almost any striker. Vardy is exsposive and scores a lot of goals on the counter using his pace. Arsenal pass the death out of the ball around the box slow and steady a lot of the time. Think they are taking a page out of our box with strikers that just don't fit the system 😁.

Quick question for the Eds if you have time

Do Juve really hold an interest in Benteke?

Thanks lads.

Believable2 Unbelievable13

{Ed002's Note - Juventus are expecting to lose one forward this summer and are aware that another might also depart. They have already identified the two they are looking to bring in. If Mandzukic were to leave then perhaps they would be looking for that style of striker.}

03 Jun 2016 16:31:09
Morata is one of them, I think.

03 Jun 2016 17:08:19
Benteke is a quality top international striker. just because he didn't have a great year doesn't make him poor Might even have a decent euros and we should have no problem selling him. if that's what Klopp wants to do that is.

04 Jun 2016 16:18:52
Kopdogs, Belgian coach Marc Wilmots who can't stand Benteke, strongly disagrees with you. The guy is NO top international striker and he has been exposed for his laziness, lack of fight, and a stinky attitude so again, what makes him a top international striker?

Hi Eds

Is there any update on Jonas Hector moving this summer, could we possibly get him?

Cheers
Willie.

Believable0 Unbelievable9

{Ed002's Note - There is nothing new on Hector, Jonas Hector would be a very odd choice if Liverpool were interested, and I am not aware that they have declared any interest but they have had a scout at a number of games he has appeared in for Cologne. He is very much a defender who doesn't get forward as often as the kopflose huhn style of play Klipperty prefers. However, he will be sold this summer and Liverpool have certainly been looking for a left back or two.

The club are certainly looking elsewhere.}

03 Jun 2016 12:41:20
Great to see you back ED!

Papers are suggesting that we may be after the Villa left back, who seemed their best player by a mile until his injury.

Agree6 Disagree9

{Ed002's Note - Aston Villa's young left back Jordan Amavi has been attracting the attention of a number of sides including Milan, Monaco and Lyon. His agent has said that Liverpool have approached him to say that they are also interested.}

03 Jun 2016 13:50:33
Glad to see you're around 002.
Amavi looked a player before his injury. Would suspect he'd choose one of the French sides ahead of us, both with CL football or better chance of.

Agree9 Disagree11

03 Jun 2016 14:51:15
Schmelzer never really got forward under Klopp but piszceck used to motor forward maybe he likes 1 staying back.

03 Jun 2016 15:03:33
Amavi may well choose to stay in England? He looks a decent option from what I saw of him.

Jonas Hector has been given permission to speak to other clubs. Liverpool have submitted a bid and are in talks.

According to the Times

Chelsea are pursuing Liverpool striker Christian Benteke as an alternative signing should they fail to bring Romelu Lukaku back to the club this summer.

God I hope so.

Believable15 Unbelievable18

03 Jun 2016 09:27:35
I think they have learnt their lesson a while back in buying players from us, doubt they'll make it twice and spend that kind of cash that we would want. Not trying to knock Benteke that much but i think they have better options available to them.

Benteke is our 4th choice striker that simply doesn't fit into the team, would prefer to ship him off to Juventus, but if PL team makes a right offer, even Chelsea, not sure how you turn it down. Buy another Origi type youngster Klopp can develop as a 4th striker.

Mng Peeps and Editor.
Bad news to begin with. Liverpool are believed to have rejected an opening offer from PSG and expect them to come back with an improved offer. PSG has met Coutinho's representatives early in the year. With Hazzard staying at Chelsea, PSG decided to turn their attention to Coutinho.

Believable9 Unbelievable10

03 Jun 2016 07:35:15
What was the opening offer?

Agree0 Disagree8

03 Jun 2016 07:40:57
We paid £8m, if they're offering £40m plus then we should take it BUT make sure it's reinvested wisely, something we didn't do with the Suarez/ Sterling 'profit'.

Agree3 Disagree21

03 Jun 2016 08:05:45
If reports are to be believed, the opening offer was around £45m. Hope someone can confirm.

Johnny, I agree on Suarez, but we too around 60% of the Sterling money and invested it in Firmino, which I think was very shrewd business.

Agree12 Disagree8

03 Jun 2016 08:26:11
I think we should invest in someone like Draxler.
He is young, affordable and will do the job for us.

Agree15 Disagree13

03 Jun 2016 09:12:12
We already have a ready made replacement in Firmino. No need to spend money in an area that is over stocked currently. Don't want him to go but it would represent good "business" at a reported £45 million. I think he can be pursued to stay another season by Klopp.

Agree7 Disagree10

03 Jun 2016 09:34:51
Selling your most talented player is never good business whichever you spin it.

Agree21 Disagree10

03 Jun 2016 09:51:22
Didn't bother Utd too much when they sold Ronaldo.

Agree5 Disagree11

03 Jun 2016 12:05:58
A lot of people keep saying we have a replacement already in Firmino but to be honest, except for the fact they are both Brazilian and attacking players, I don't really see them as all that similar. There strengths and style of play are different to one another - they can work well together but it we lose Coutinho I feel, for a player of such quality, we would have to buy a quality replacement to not be weakened as a team.

Agree8 Disagree9

03 Jun 2016 13:53:11
I really hope we keep him. I think him and Firmino could end up being formidable together and take us to CL next season.

If he desperately wants to leave though and we can't persuade him to stay, then we can't hold him against his will. It's not a good message from the club and I think we need to also learn to do the right thing by players if they are respectful in their dealings with us. We don't want to build a reputation where we screw players over if they ever want to leave.

If he truly wants to leave and we get 45m+ and manage to land Gotze and someone else like Mane or Silva then we'll survive just fine, but at some point we need to prove to the top players we are a club people should aspire to at the very top level, not as a stepping stone.

Hopefully Phil stays he's my favourite player. That said if he does want to leave and a huge offer comes in. If there is a similar player we have in mind we could buy then maybe worth it. You want someone who will be committed. I just wish we kept him and carried on improving the squad and sell the players not up to the level we want.
