Wow Ed008, a surprisingly comprehensive answer. I was expecting a 'No' or 'Nope' or 'Not a jot' response to such a ludicrous rumour. ;)

{Ed001's Note - being Italian, Ed008 gets very excited at any opportunity to mention Serie A.}

Martin Skrtel under consideration for the captain's armband.

Believable6 Unbelievable61

07 Jul 2015 11:58:00
Please no. He's not the first name on the team sheet - or shouldn't be. I don't think it would be a good move, personally.

Eds - has he even signed a new contract?
Was the offer revised from the previous version?

I'm not saying he is the finished article but let me humbly opine that Hendo should be captain. And Milner vice captain, or possibly Lallana if he can establish himself.

I know there is a breed of Liverpool fan that believes it should only be a Scouser wearing the captain's armband, but Flanno is nowhere near ready for that. Eds - do you know if he is seen as a future leader?

Sorry, lots of questions there amongst lots of opinions.

{Ed002's Note - The expectation is that he will.}

07 Jul 2015 13:03:52
Why does Milner or Lallana deserve to be an LFC captain now when people like Lucas, the longest serving LFC player in this squad from this year, is still around?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - The captain certainly does not need to be the longest serving player. You ideally want the best leader.}

07 Jul 2015 13:12:46
Never seen anyone suggest Flanno for captain. Henderson for me with Lucas vice-captain and then Milner next in line would be my choices.

Lallana has enough to worry about to get into the team so no chance for me.

Agree0 Disagree1

07 Jul 2015 13:52:08
Exactly Ed2, now Gerrard and Carragher have departed I don't see a huge amount of maturity and leadership besides Hendo, Milner & Lallana.

Milner would possibly be a good choice in my eyes but having just signed it may be too soon, although I might be wrong.

Lucas is again not one of the first names on the team sheet (rightly or wrongly) so it's difficult to see it until or unless he can establish himself.

It's very early days for Flanno, but being a local lad he would be a popular choice one day.

Sakho if he could get his English well, He is one of the most important and guaranteed starter.

I didn't realise Skrtel's needlework skills were that good, especially with elastic.

Is he being lined up for the new kits too?

Agree1 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 15:13:30
I like Skrtel always have, he is probably our most intimidating player and he's not afraid to rough up the opposition which i don't see thru so much of our team. Could be worse candidates for the armband. Eds how important is the role in fairness

{Ed001's Note - very important when you have a young team.}

Until the season is under way I don't know we have a first choice between Skrtel, Sakho, & Lovren so I don't see Skrtel can be guaranteed to play & therefore cannot be captain. And that's before you factor the presence of Illori.

As Ed1 says; he has had trouble in his position co-ordinating with anyone other than Agger, so if he is a problem for our defence he can't have much of a future. Unless something changes that - like a new coach/assistant manager maybe - I don't see how he can have much game time guaranteed. He does have redeeming qualities, he knocks in a few goals and is fierce going forward. But as a CB he doesn't seem to know where he is meant to be in front of his own goal & cannot mark the opposition.

I did not expect him to be offered a new contract in all honesty.

It's difficult to see who will be ever present in midfield now as well. Milner has had guarantees of game time - we are led to believe - but I would have thought Hendo having more years ahead of him in the game will see more starts than Milner. He looks to be the anointed one & I struggle to see who else fits the role currently.

Still, a lot will happen between now & 9th of August.

Sakho for captain? The same guy that jumped in his car and ditched the game when he realized he wasn't starting. I think it was one of the Derby's.

07 Jul 2015 18:56:04
Skrtel never communicates on the pitch, ever. Not captain material and plenty of other better prospects ahead of him (Henderson being the stand out name).

Agree1 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 18:59:39
Good evening ladies and gents. Not going to get into who should be captain but I do have my doubts about Henderson.
1. That infamous dealing with Balo over a penalty, yes Hendo was selected as penalty taker, at that point Balo was on the bench. As captain knowing Balo's record Hendo should have handed the ball to Balo.
2. With amount of midfielders in the team to date, are we sure Hendo is going to be a permanent starter?
I don't like Skirtyle as a defender but he has the grit a young inexperienced team requires and Brenda likes him.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 19:43:25
Henderson is far more likely to be starting than Skrtel, least if we want our best players starting. Balotelli was wrong in that incident - he should be taking orders from the captain. You'd probably say Hendo bottled it if he just left Balotelli to take it without complaint - damned if you do, damned if you don't!

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 22:21:18
Yes Seano he should have especially as they both had 100% records at taking penalties. Balo never missed one and neither Hendo, but Hendo had never taken one. I still believe a captain leads and reads the game on the field as Gerrad did, in my view if Hendo as captain had given the ball to Balo as a proven penalty taker he would have received more respect and proven himself as a captain and not a yes sir no sir man. Don't get me wrong the whole incident was foolish and childish but a captain should know his players and how they react. Maybe Hendo should, have shoved Balo aside and missed the penalty just because Brenda said so? Good captain? Maybe?

Agree1 Disagree0

08 Jul 2015 06:23:05
Why are you so sure Hendo would have missed? Take your tongue out of Balotelli's backside for a second - he was petulent, he should have listened to his captain and he should not be doing whatever he wants irrespective of team mates, team orders, etc. I don't like Rodgers but he is the manager - if he designates Henderson as penalty taker then that is who should be taking the penalty. Balotelli has a history or pratting around like he did and it is inexcusable, I don't see how that incident renders Henderson unworthy as captain.

You clearly have a problem with Henderson, I don't know why, but its affecting your judgment: 'are we sure Hendo is going to be a permanent starter?'

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Jul 2015 13:17:21
It should be Hendo since Skerts isn't a leader and doesn't communicate. Vice-Captain at best for him, although if he stays he should concentrate on improving his game so any kind of title would be a distraction. Hendo & Lucas have got the personality and loyalty to make a fine Captain + Vice pair.

I have it on fairly good authority that Christian Benteke will be in and around Melwood for a medical before Friday.

Tim Sherwood albeit has said he wants to keep him, but also knows Benteke has already set his sights higher.

A fee of 26.5 million has been agreed between the two clubs with a further 3.5 as add ons.

why not clee red?? explain. i am at a loss to why people are so against benteke? he scores goals!! i like to hear peoples opinions on but i am not getting this one. who would you suggest?

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 12:58:05
Because he doesn't suit our style of play.

He is a target man, we hardly ever put crosses into the box.

Agree1 Disagree1

07 Jul 2015 13:14:51
All these people saying he doesn't fit our style of play have probably never seen Benteke play. While he's good in the air, he's certainly very adept on the ground. He scores a lot of headers because Villa are a crossing team, not because that's all he's good at.
Also, Rodgers spoke about a change in direction in terms of style of play. Its very possible he'll get us crossing that bit more. With players like Milner and Hendo I am sure he'll get good service.
The main issue with Benteke is his price but if he completes our team then so be it. We already have a fast tricky striker in Sturridge. Benteke offers a different option.I really don't get all the hating. He wouldn't be my first choice either but he's still a very good player.

Agree1 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 13:19:46
@Milky Joe

I'd hardly ever put a cross in the box too if I had Sterling playing upfront. When Balotelli/Lambert played, we did tend to cross more.

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 13:23:09
Maybe our style of play will change? Let's be honest we've not won anything I know we came close the season before last but we had one of the worlds best players.
Milner delivers a good cross and I'm pretty sure Clyne will be expected to put crosses in from deep so maybe Benteke is the right man. To be honest I can't think of another proven premier league striker who would be available right now

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 13:29:24
May be we hardly cross because we haven't got a target man (who plays regularly)

Agree2 Disagree1

07 Jul 2015 14:57:16
You guys that want benteke have lost your marbles!

It will be the same as the balotelli and carroll scenarios mark my words, benteke will struggle to score in our team and the way we play, then by next july we will be trying to off load him for a fair loss.

More than half of bentekes bpl goals have been from crosses into the box while last season lfc were 20th in the table for crosses put into the box(by a fair bit i might add)

Its a recipe for disaster and a club like ours should be targeting players that fit with how we do things especially for 25 mill, not making huge gambles. If he joins i will have no choice except to back him but please FSG don't do it.

Great site though all the other footy sites are a joke.

Agree0 Disagree2

07 Jul 2015 15:57:30
We hardly put the ball in the box for the following reasons
A. We didn't have anyway capable of getting on the end of them
B. Our wide players and full backs were not capable of putting a decent cross in and rarely beat the first man
C. If you watch Liverpool matches we rarely go out wide, full backs rarely overlap the winger to give that option.
All that together you wouldn't put crossesin the box. However with clyne and moreno, coutinho firmino and milner providing width, Henderson is no mug when it comes to crossing, benteke provides the perfect target man. Also as a player who wins most headers and holds the ball up well, the advannced midfielders should have a field day. This is going to change our style of play and I have such a good feeling about it. My biggest concern is our defensive frailties but that's another conversation

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 16:20:48
World class mate Benteke is very different from carroll please understand why by using your marbles. He has scored those kind of goals because that is how his team were playing. Its not his fault to score many headers. He goot good first touch, his passing is good, got good pace and ability to stretch the defence.Only thing he might be short off is his off the ball movement because his team never intend to put the ball in free
space behind the defence. His movement can be coached and improved and after missing out Bacca he is the only viable option. As for Balotelli he is totally uninteredted in the game.

Agree1 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 17:25:49
Why do you all want more of the same type of striker? We currently have Sturridge, Ings, Origi, Lambert, Ballotelli, Borini and Sinclair, we have different types of strikers capable of playing different types of formations and systems. Benteke will be feared by a lot of Central Defenders, he is a beast, like Drogba was for Chelsea, I hope we get him, he will not only be a threat in the air and in the box, his strength and hold up play will create space and chances for the attacking mids to get in on the scoring. Great Signing.

Agree2 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 18:28:49
Benteke has destroyed our defence on numerous occasions. He's a top player. And he's still relatively young. We could get 10 years out of him.

07 Jul 2015 18:43:06
I think people need to have a look at some of bentekes goals, he scores a lot more than just headers

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Jul 2015 19:08:16
Benteke is strong, holds the ball up well, takes two maybe 3 defenders out of position to deal with him which opens up spaces elsewhere. Not saying he is my first choice but maybe most realistic. Also don't forget O'Driscoll likes the passing game with players thinking for themselves and if the best option is to lump it forward the New do so. Will keep the opposition thinking for once don't you think?

Crosses are a crap shoot at best. Hardly work and just hands the ball over. Complete waste. 1970s tactics for sure

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Jul 2015 12:06:35
Prem Stats are that takes 3-4 times as many final third passes to score as compared to crosses. Arguably part of reason we don't score from many crosses is we don't have any dominant player centrally & Sterling tends to cross about 4 feet above, in front or behind the forward after skinning the wide man.

Benteke has raped us on how many occasions? Need different types of striker just Balotelli n Lambert didn't cut it - Benteke, Sturridge, Ings, Origi. different ways to skin a cat?

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Jul 2015 16:24:05

Worth a watch for all the Anti-Benteke fans. He clearly shows he's more than just a target man. He can adapt to whatever way Rodgers wants him to play. Be in hold up play to open up space for the on coming attacking midfielders, the balls in the back of the defenders for him to chase onto, the plan B where we whip crosses in for me.

To be honest, I was apprehensive but having thought about it - it could be very handy. He's no Carroll or Ballotelli - they are both horses. This lad, is a real Beast who can bully defenders . I have faith in Brendan, SeanO'D & Pep' - they can get him to work with the team & get the best out of him. let's see if Tilly's right first though before we get excited

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Jul 2015 22:28:36
IF Benteke gets a run of games he will score goals and he is a menace for opposition defenders but will he play consistently if sturridge is fit? Probably best striker available given no UCL next season or for the foreseeable future
