Ed's can you confirm if there is any interest currently being shown in Ben Davies? I heard Celtic but nothing more than this.

{Ed002's Note - Ben Davies (CB) Middlesbrough offer an option but see the asking price as high. Celtic certainly considered him as an option but are looking at others as well.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers Ed.

Must go down as one of the most bizarre transfers in LFC history.

How to ruin someone's career also. Thought it was just city that did that.

01 Jul 2022 12:47:27
Not at the Balotelli level though ha ha.

01 Jul 2022 13:08:47
Hyperbole much?

How have they ruined his career? We had no defenders, we took an available option who has now trained with the worlds best and can say Liverpool signed him.
He had a great loan at Sheffield. He will get a move and we will probably pocket a few million.

I am not sure how that constitutes ruining a career.

I don't see how his career has been ruined at all. He knew coming in that he was only going to be an emergency backup. He would've played if he hadn't picked up a couple of injuries after signing. We're paying him big wages for someone of his role. It's also not like we held a gun to his head to force him to join, he had options and he chose us knowing all this. He got to train with top players and work with top coaches, before he getting a good loan to a promotion chasing side. So while the transfer hasn't exactly been a smashing success, I cannot see how his career has been ruined at all.

FSG have been turning a few pounds here and there through flipping cheap players. Its all a bit market trader for a corp worth 3bn but you would, wouldn't you?

01 Jul 2022 14:34:46
Over react much in real life Magico? I wish someone would ruin my life by paying me thousands of pounds a week to be trained by and train with some of the best coaches and players around. Must be so depressing.

{Ed001's Note - and it was his choice to sign, knowing that this would be almost certainly the outcome. He clearly chose to take the quick buck over what was probably best for his long term prospects as a player, knowing that he would never get another chance to sign for a club like Liverpool.}

From what I saw of him at Preston he was worth a go ahead of Williams but obviously Klopp didn’t think so. Imo he would be a great signing for someone for a few mil.

the thing with that transfer is all about hindsight for me.

At the time everyone we seemed to play at CB got injured, all the recognized senior CB's then fab and hendo joined in too!

So we got in Kabak and davies as emergency cover just in case any others got added to the list. A fair call to say how rotten our luck was with injuries at the time.

He has been paid handsomley to train with some of the best in the world with one of the best coaches. Had great facilities to work in too.

Add to that he has got Liverpool on the CV so I am sure that will get him a fairly decent move. I wished he got more opportunities in that season (although I think he got injured too if memory serves) but I won't feel too sorry for him.

I would not criticize Ben Davies too much for his decision. He said the financial impact on his family was just something he could not pass up and they'll never need to worry about money again. Considering his ceiling, age, and suitors, I'm not sure he did the wrong thing at all.

{Ed0666's Note - I’m not sure anyone in his situation would have passed up £60k a week for 4-5 year deal.

01 Jul 2022 21:32:42
I actually thought the Kabak deal was a fantastic piece of business on paper. Liverpool paid a very small loan fee for a young player who was seen as potential first team option. There was a reasonable end of season purchase price, it helped with the CB crisis, and Klopp got to see how he’d fit in with the system and the Premier league. If it didn’t work then Liverpool just send him back at the end of the season. I know it didn’t work out, but for me it doesn’t take away from it being a well thought out deal.

01 Jul 2022 22:33:10
Is Ben Davies really on a 6 year deal?

02 Jul 2022 06:51:52
Really? How to ruin someone's career? If a footballer, his agent, his manager and maybe also his family and friends can't have a reasonable guess themselves how a move is going to play out then it's on them. What did he think was going to happen? Sign the contract and suddenly become the level of Virgil? Or more realistically he took a good payday to train at a great club and see where his level was. Footballers find their level - Vardy and Ryan Babel are great examples of this.

At 60k per week, please come and ruin my career!

Seriously speaking, my only issue with the Davies signing is that he was never used.
