I hope fermino proves me wrong this season, my opinion is not based on these preseason games but last seasons campaign as well.
He frustrates me so much, he does seem to have the ability but doesn't produce it anywhere near often enough for me.

{Ed025's Note - for me trevor he is a very talented player who is being played out of position due to the lack of real centre forward, him and couts are very similar but are vying for one place and with sick note sturridge always on the treatment table he is the scapegoat to fill the striker spot, if couts does go and you purchase a real goalscorer then firmino can play just behind him in his true role and i believe liverpool would be a stronger team mate..

Have to agree with being out of position. One of the best games I've seen Firmino play was against City when he was on the LW and he was immense. Striker he is not. Very capable attacking Mid be is.

30 Jul 2017 09:54:25
He's perfect for the no.10 role in a diamond. him linking play behind Sturridge and Origi is where I think he'd be lethal. apparently was one of the most frequent passers of through balls in the bundesleague when he played no.10 there.

30 Jul 2017 10:05:01
He doesn't stop running, he creates so much space for those behind him, i think its a little harsh to single him out.

30 Jul 2017 10:09:11
I can see what you mean Eds 25 the one thing I would say is that couts and salad seem to already struck up an understanding with couts vision and salah pace to get in behind.

30 Jul 2017 10:35:47
Surely, if Coutinho goes, the most logical move is to buy a striker and move Firmino into midfield? Does anyone else see it that way?
Keep Sturridge as an option or even try Solanke? He can't stop scoring!

30 Jul 2017 10:37:15
Agree fully with the ed but got slated for a similar comment.

Coutinho could be replaced with a true forward and wiuld shine in the Coutinho position.

30 Jul 2017 10:39:23
He's being played out of position, but the wing is not his strongest place.

If Coutinho goes, I would drop him into central attacking midfield. Agree with Zimbo -- they're actually very similar players, with excellent vision and playmaking.

Firmino can play CF, but he is more of a playmaker than a striker. He also has the strength and defensive abilities to play in central midfield, arguably more so than Coutinho in this way.

30 Jul 2017 10:59:04
To me it looks like we were trying to buy Keita in advance to soften the blow if Coutinho leaving. You know what it's like when you sell your best player and everyone's frantic about trying to find a replacement. Also other teams know your desperate. Perhaps they've decided not to sell him unless a replacement comes in first.

30 Jul 2017 10:59:20
I think people get hung up on goals - it is true Firmino is not going to smash 25 goals in a season, but his pressing, his vision, his touch, his intelligence, they all lead to chances and all contribute to our system and how we play. I honestly think he is the best fit for the role in our team - if you only count goals then perhaps not but if we look at the bigger picture he works well in the role he has and I'm not sure there is anyone else at the club who could fill it. Just my two cents.

Dunno, I quite like firmino up top, we didn't exactly struggle for goals last season, I know he didn't score as many as some of us would have liked, but you can't deny the work he did on the front line led to a good chunk of goals for the rest of the team.
If coutinho goes then it does seem logical to buy a striker and give firmino the playmaker role but be careful what you wish for I think, full on strikers never have the workrate that firmino gives you and the likes of Mane and Salah could struggle as a result.

30 Jul 2017 11:36:04
People seem to think if we buy a goalscorer it will reduce goals scored by other people. Well it wouldn't, you only have to look at Barca, Real and Bayern etc to see that it would mean us scoring more goals. Just because we had a world class goal scorer up front wouldn't stop Coutinho, Lallana, Can, Wijnaldum, Mane and Salah having efforts on goal. It would just mean out of the 20 odd chances a game we create more will be finished.

30 Jul 2017 11:36:34
For me Sturridge, Solanke, Ings, Firmino as reserve and the other youngsters should get a try up top IF Countinho leaves. Firmino in behind with Mane and Salah wide forwards. Invest the money in centre back and right back. Try and keep Can and use Grugic a bit more this year.

30 Jul 2017 11:37:36
Have also seen a few lazy nods towards another try for Pulisic.

30 Jul 2017 12:50:56
There just isn't many top forwards around at the moment and even fewer available.

30 Jul 2017 14:40:43
Firminho is more like rivaldo were couthino is more like ronaldinho both play off the front man / inside forward just different types people moan about when you play a right sided centre back on the left side how hard it is to adjust think about how hard it is to change into a front man.

30 Jul 2017 15:04:44
Klopp could play a 4-2-3-1 system with firmino behind the striker if coutinho goes (I hope not) . there's plenty of options for Klopp.

30 Jul 2017 16:40:15
The fact klopp uses firminio as a make shift cf tells us all we need to know. Your most skillful, naturally gifted player is usually your forward. Although he can frustrate a little sometimes he can also have you jumping out of your seat. Fantastic player, hope hd gets a chance to play that no 10 role this year. Impressed with training reports on DS so we could well see rf in his proper position.

30 Jul 2017 16:52:09
Firmino needs to stop trying to be so cute in his finishes infront of goal.

He did it yesterday trying a chip when he was 1v1. He should of just put his foot through it low and hard. Every other part of his game is good for an attacker.

30 Jul 2017 17:48:53
Coutinho makes our midfield tick. The only replacement for him in the squad is Lallana. Firmino continues to be our best striker, and not because of scoring goals. His pressing style and creativity are great for our team. Personally feel coutinho is worth more to our team than Neymar to Barcelona and wouldn't sell him unless we could fund keita VVD and a replacement with his transfer. He is on the verge of having an incredible year and we will sorely regret letting him go this late in the window.

30 Jul 2017 18:55:08
Firmino can become a top class striker
Perhaps finishing classes from Rushie and Robbie may help.

30 Jul 2017 20:16:14
You can't teach what rush and Robbie have. Killer instinct, natural goal scorers who instinctively know where the goal is. Kane has it, suarez has it. We have some highly talented forwards but not sure we have a natural goal scorer. Solanke looks promising. With someone like rush, they would score no matter who they played for and no matter who they play against. Youth team, first team w/ e. These people get goals simple. Saying that, if Danny starts and stays fit I fancy him to go plus twenty all competitions. Solanke will score if he plays. He has already proved that.

I hope and pray he does not leave us. But if he does we should get a 100 million and Rakitic, anyone who doesn't appreciate Rakitic doesn't understand football. Predominantly played at the right of midfield he has still excelled in a Barcelona team with MSN. His game would suite premier league as well. Technically and tactically astute player. Rest all players offered are not at his level .

From that cash get VVD and Aubameyang.
4-2-3-1; Clyne Matip VVD Robertson ; Hendo Rakitic; Salah Firmino Mane: Aubameyang.

PS:- I am 31 year old, transfer market really brings the child out of us :)

31 Jul 2017 14:22:36
Definitely agree with the view that a goal scorer for him to drop in behind he'd be much more valued. He missed a fair number of chances that an out and out scorer would have got but does things to create and spread play that a scorer doesn't. As someone else said, the assumption those other goals dry up if a natural finisher comes in is wrong. The team missed plenty of chances last season that a finisher would be scoring whilst still scoring plenty of goals.
