A mate of mine is mates with an ex-player, currently still involved at the club.

His view (ex-player) is that Coutinho had been told by the owners that he could join Barca. He is p***ed off with the statement FSG put out this morning and decided to put the transfer request in. It was deliberately leaked to the media to ensure LFC couldn't keep it under wraps.

He also said that Couts has said he will not play for LFC again to try to force the move through and due to how upset he is by what he sees as a stab in the back from the owners.

Klopp's stance apparently forced the owners to change their mind, so this could have a major rumblings.

Back injury is genuine - despite what is being said on twitter.

I know none of this isn't really news to anyone, but thought I would post what I have been told.

Don't think he'll go on strike as the World Cup is coming up.

Also, imagine going on strike when you earn the best part of 150k a week 😂 Ridiculous.

Interesting, thanks for sharing.

Do you reckon Klopp has been playing games? Basically saying to the media that he's not going in order to force FSG to back him by issuing that statement?

Karma Liverpool fans now you know how Southampton fans feel.

If the OP is right, Klopp got ahead of himself, and screwed up. He and FSG need to get on the same page ASAP.

I think this whole thing could have been amicable (i. e. give us one more season), but the Neymar departure has left Barcelona humiliated and desperate, and now they will do anything to force the Coutinho transfer.

2 weeks to find a replacement for Coutinho? Who? At what price?

A bad situation all round.

Why would the owners tell coutinho he could join Barca?
Or tell any player anything?

11 Aug 2017 16:56:22
tigerx it isn’t the first time Klopp has got a head of himself an screwed up in this window. it’s laughable really 😒.

11 Aug 2017 17:21:01
Eh? How has Klopp screwed up? Owners are supposed to have told Couts he could go and then said no. Klopp may have said he doesn't want him sold but that is fair enough. He is trying to build a successful team. Did he tell the lad he could go?

Pitcher we've been here before not are fault lfc are a bigger club than saints, and Barcelona than liverpool.

Just as much as it's not Celtics fault you can offer prem football.

Maybe the Eds can help us here.

Is it normal for players to talk to the owners about such things?

{Ed002's Note - It rather depends. The Liverpool owners are not football people and are not based in this country. Their contact with the players on a day-by-day basis will be zip and would otherwise be limited to a few words when they make their very occasional visits. Other owners are closer to the side and attend all the matches they can, are friends with players etc..}

11 Aug 2017 16:55:36
The statement was from the owners Tiger. If the owners have made such a promise to coutinho it's them that created this mess.

I wouldn't of thought owners talk to players and promise moves like this? Surely that would be the conversations the manager would have? Is this normal practice Eds? The idea of owners promising moves?

11 Aug 2017 21:05:02
Nah, I'm not buying that, OP. Why would the owners promise Cou he could go to Barcelona w/ o Klopp knowing about it? Also, why would they say that and then come out and say he is not leaving at any price, knowing full well that it is false and contrary to what they told Cou, behind Klopp's back? This does not make sense.

11 Aug 2017 21:47:44
regards Klopp, the best thing to do would be to get Klopp as far the hell away from any kind of transfer talk as possible.

11 Aug 2017 22:09:16
I don't think it was meant that the owners and pipco are best buddies and speak on the phone and have coffee etc. More so that the hierarchy of LFC had told Pipcos people that the transfer could happen. This was (I understand) behind Klopps back.

Interesting now that supposedly Klopp is Pipcos "enemy" and they don't get on.

More posturing.

I love Couts, but am I the only one that thinks he's not good enough to replace Iniesta? He's a great player, makes something from nothing, but I just don't think he's the right man for them. I think they'd be looking to offload him in a year or two. He doesn't get involved anywhere near as much as Iniesta.

Now you may say. How about a replacement for Neymar? Well I think their other target in Dembele is a better choice. Phil has always been shoehorned into that position and doesn't play direct enough and doesn't have the pace to be Barca's left forward.

Not now epic, but don't allow what you see now cloud what could be still to come. If he were to stay with us and take the #8 role on, he would develop all those skills that you say he doesn't have yet. And I don't see any reason why he wouldn't pick those up and excel at them.

12 Aug 2017 03:39:17
Phil was great at front of diamond in last couple of games last term. I still not completely convinced number 8 is his position. He plays best between the lines so number 10 has to be his natural position.
