Gravenberch any good? What kind of mid is he?

Ben elf

1.) 21 Aug 2023 14:52:12
Versatile with a lot of potential.

2.) 21 Aug 2023 15:04:47
"The 6’3″ Dutchman has largely been deployed as a central midfielder for both Ajax and Bayern, either in a two-man or three-man unit, and recently Thomas Tuchel explained he is at his best as a No. 8".

"Gravenberch is a progressive midfield player who looks to move the ball up the pitch whenever possible, with FBref statistics claiming Alexis Mac Allister as the midfielder he is most similar to".

"Gravenberch is at his best as a ball-carrying, line-breaking No. 8, who is also capable of dropping deeper to build up play from the No. 6 position. He is far from the finished product, but he slots in well as a midfielder who carries possession before linking with the attacking players, while also serving as a goal threat. Over the past year, Gravenberch is in the 95th percentile for shot-creating actions among midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues, and in the 93rd percentile for expected goals and assists. However, there remain concerns over his work rate off the ball, with Munich publication Abendzeitung Munchen reporting in November that Bayern coaches identified his defensive game as “problematic. ”

(Various quotes from the internet, should help a little) .

{Ed001's Note - he is very average. I would avoid anyone coming through from Ajax in recent years, their academy is not in a good place.}

3.) 21 Aug 2023 15:32:16
If we signed Doucoure we could play him box to box or DM. Similarly Fofana. He would add a range of options.

Why on earth would we sign Phillips or a project like Gravenberch.

This transfer window is like pulling teeth at times. I just hope the rumours are nonsense and there's a better plan going on behind the scenes. Please please please let there be a better plan.

4.) 21 Aug 2023 15:48:26
Ed1 what do you think we need in the rest of this window?

{Ed001's Note - a reliable centre-back and to offload Matip and Phillips. I am not so sure what we need in midfield, it depends on how we are going to play. I would prefer to see Trent moved into midfield instead and give Bradley a run of games when he is fit, than buy for the sake of it.}

5.) 21 Aug 2023 16:09:26
Agreed Ed001, those days of the 70s, 80s and 90s where their academy was churning amazing players, one after the other, is long gone. I have no idea why it's happened but maybe because of a vacuum at the top with Overmars, Van den Sar and Ten Hag out of the picture now? And it always seemed to me that their Board was always fighting among it's members. They had succès with Dutch (and Surinamese) players initially, then they turned to African players and then they turned to South America. Now, it's all quiet in terms of talent.

{Ed001's Note - they lost their way a long time ago, they are surviving on people remembering them as being good years ago now.}

6.) 21 Aug 2023 18:24:47
Barca lost their way as well when they abandoned La Masia which was their bread and butter for providing players for their first team many years ago and started getting into spending on players and signing a ton of duds in the process. Shambolic recruitment strategies that got them in the serious financial money pit they are in now.

7.) 21 Aug 2023 18:25:11
I’m not sure that Trent could play as a lone 6. He is/ would be more of a deep laying play maker (a bit like Thiago) who needs a dedicated CDM to play next to him. That would need a formation change from us, as we usually only play with one 6. He could play as a 8, but we are well stacked there already.

8.) 21 Aug 2023 19:38:57
“there remain concerns over his work rate off the ball…”

That’s an understatement. Besides he apparently only wants to go to United. Surely we’d learn a lesson from. caicedo?

9.) 21 Aug 2023 23:41:59
sounds a not for me kinda player.

How come Scottish teams are able to. watch there league games on there own channel but English teams Can't?

Ben elf

1.) 18 Jan 2022 09:43:55
Because they don't get paid billions by TV companies for the TV rights.

2.) 18 Jan 2022 10:07:47
There’s a reason the Scottish leagues don’t bring in anywhere close to the revenue that the English generate.

3.) 18 Jan 2022 10:40:45
I live up north and they try to charge me £13 to watch Aberdeen play, id rather listen to it on the radio or pay the sky subscription to watch the championship than watch the scottish football.

4.) 18 Jan 2022 12:06:42
They could pay me £13 I still wouldn't watch Scottish football.

5.) 18 Jan 2022 17:52:57
My first game as a spectator was at Pittodrie. fond memories.

21 May 2021 14:25:10
What is with the prices of the new shirt? Not that I ever get one bit how can the average fan afford that? Absolutely disgusting. Also what is the difference between the match top and the stadium top that justifies 85 quid for my daughter.

Ben elf

1.) 21 May 2021 14:48:05
I don’t mind it so much for adults but for kids? Morally bankrupt, the parents of working class kids should be able to afford kits to play in it means the world to them. Often its all the kids ever want to wear and it is a huge part of growing up and loving your football club.

These are the exact kind of decisions that fans on the board need to intervene in.

{Ed002's Note - The "fans on the board" cannot impact decisions.}

2.) 21 May 2021 14:48:05

3.) 21 May 2021 15:19:48
or what it is worth Ben elf I agree, I think the new strip is pretty appalling.

The cuffs and neck line are being described as "crimson" (or whatever colour variant Nike wish to call it), which has no real correlation to the club for mine, perhaps the design is a discarded A. S. Roma aberration? supposedly the colour is meant to reresent - power, energy and danger . danger alright, danger of making my eyes bleed - not liking it!

Keeping with the A. S. Roma/ Italian theme, I noticed on the training jacket that Nike have placed another garish looking piece of "fashion" fabric (aka we have run outof ideas) in the middle which have symbols that for mine resemble A. C. Milan and ACF Fiorentina's logos - what and why?

Perhaps one of the Ed's might be able to enlighten me/ us on how the decision (s) re the Kit are reached? surely someone at the club signs off on the final design decisions, or under the contract are Nike given carte blanche?

4.) 21 May 2021 15:23:40
It'll eventually change, the pressure will come from 'fast fashion' and clubs needing to think about their impact on the environment.

Personally I would get them back on to the two year cycles. Home every 2 year, away every 2 year on an intermittent basis. The kit providers get to provide a new kit every year, and the people that can afford it can buy it when it first comes out. Then for the second year offer it on a discounted rate for those not fortunate enough to afford them.

IMO there is absolute no need for three new kits every year other than fleecing fans.

5.) 21 May 2021 15:27:56
It was only when people kicked off on here last year that I realised shirts are £70, sure they were £40 not long back.
Changing them every season is annoying, as someone has said it should alternate home and away and keep for 2 seasons. Was that not the case sometime ago?
It’s no surprise people buy shirts from China and I don’t blame them.

6.) 21 May 2021 16:46:24
I get the new shirt every season and I have all way found football too to be good quality all ways wash well. I get my autistic son 2 or 3 of them each season and they last a lot longer than all is other T-shirt. I still have an Adidas one from 2008 and have ones upwards from that date.

7.) 21 May 2021 15:42:09
If people keep buying them at that price, they will keep selling them at that price.

8.) 21 May 2021 17:05:45
Exactly mikey - just stop buying them and stop whining.

9.) 21 May 2021 17:33:10
It is what it is, as long as people will buy them Nike will keep making them, basic capitalism. None of us are compelled to do so, that’s about choice. Personally I think there’s no value in buying them, I’d rather go for the retro ones, as they’re never going to go out of date. There are other ways of showing support which benefit the club without spunking £100 on a new shirt.

10.) 22 May 2021 06:59:14
I don't know why everyone feels so compelled to buy the latest kit. This kit's design has been hammered yet the same people are probably moaning about how much it costs.

11.) 22 May 2021 07:33:19
Although I completely agree with the sentiment - and once every 2 years may be a decent compromise - I just can't see there being any change. There will be some 'fans' who can afford to splash out almost £100 every season, so Nike and others will continue with their 3 shirts per season unfortunately.

15 Apr 2021 11:20:14
So it's a last four of PSG City Chelsea and Madrid. Finance wins.

Ben elf

{Ed077's Note - Sour grapes.

1.) 15 Apr 2021 11:24:36
Football teams are allowed to spend money you know. The teams that got there are there because they deserve to be, we were crap so we did not. On the contrary our £50 million signing who barely ever plays is largely to blame for us getting knocked out. Nothing to do with ‘financial doping’.

2.) 15 Apr 2021 11:24:49
We were beaten by a better team in Real Madrid, they deserve to go through. While I’m not someone who likes teams spending big season after season, they manager and players still have to put the work in to reach their targets. So I have no problem with those 4 teams being in the semi final, they deserve it based in performances.

Liverpool fans probably wouldn’t complain if we had an endless out of money.

Fair play to those 4 teams, I just hope Man City do not win. Chelsea or Real Madrid for me.

3.) 15 Apr 2021 11:42:09
the team that wins it will deservedly do so, after last night i don't care who wins it.
In fact if an English team wins it am i right in thinking 5th place gets a place next season.

{Ed002's Note - No. The fifth place would go to an English team winning and not being in the top four.}

4.) 15 Apr 2021 11:50:50
Ben seriously mate get over it we lost end of🤦‍♂️.

5.) 15 Apr 2021 11:57:53
Agree Ed, sour grapes, we had our chances but the bottom line is Real Madrid were better than us over two games. Having said that, for the first time in a very long time, I have no interest in the Champions League. My brother is an Arsenal fan and he's pulling for PSG just to rub it in the faces of Spurs fans.

6.) 15 Apr 2021 13:22:22
Exactly. The game is played on the field, we had our chances, we didn't produce. What's the sour grapes for? We're better supporters than that. I hope PSG get it. Maybe they'll slow down on the obscene prices and salaries they're handing out (and inflating the market) once they've gotten it.

7.) 15 Apr 2021 14:01:20
OP, I can taste the salt from your post all the way from here in Brussels. Show some dignity even in defeat. We had our opportunities to win the tie, just like we did vs Atleti and wasted them all. If you are mad that we lost, I propose you look inwards rather than slagging off other teams for succeeding where we failed. You should b better than that.

8.) 15 Apr 2021 12:10:01
For me I would be happy to see City win it. The club I love is out so as far as the competition goes I am a natural. Regardless of what people’s thoughts are on their spending or fan base City you cannot deny under Pep then are so pro football. And in this day and age that’s actually quite uncommon. So many teams set up these days and are actually anti football.

To owners and players football is a business and job but to us fans it’s entertainment. And you can not say City are not entertaining to watch whilst most clubs sacrifice entertainment for financial gain.

9.) 15 Apr 2021 14:40:16
Same JK23. A lad I work with is a City ST holder. Up until this C.V. only European aways he'd missed were the trips to Russia. Still says his best day as a City fan is Wembley vs Gillingham in 99. Sadly he now also has a brain tumour so it really makes me hope they win it this year.

10.) 15 Apr 2021 17:18:40
United win Europa then 5th gets CL right?

{Ed077's Note - no.

5th position (or any other position outside the top 4/CL qualification places) in the league gets CL footy only if they win one of CL or EL.

Liverpool won't be getting CL next season b6 finishing 5th now.

11.) 15 Apr 2021 17:44:10
People need to get over the hatred of Keita. Literally any one on the pitch in Madrid could have been hooked, Naby was poor but he definitely was not alone. Getting ridiculous on here, other players like Mane and Firmino have been poor for a long long time.

{Ed001's Note - yes, but they have also performed well for a long time before that. Keita has never bothered to turn up, that's why he gets stick.} Become a Patron!

12.) 15 Apr 2021 19:28:37
It's also just as ridiculous the extent people will go to, just to justify their posts and thoughts. Mane and Firmino have been as bad as Keita? Hilariously laughable. Keita hasn't produced 1% of what those two have given the team in the last four years. This is living in an "alternate reality" stuff, really.

13.) 15 Apr 2021 19:55:37
Fair enough ed, but its at the stage where a conversation has nothing to do with Keita and his name has to be brought up. Bit pathetic at this stage.

14.) 16 Apr 2021 03:19:07
I brought his name up to highlight the fact that while some people believe we are the crusading champions of the plucky, financially responsible underdog, we too have spent lots of money and a fair chunk of it on players that lots of other clubs wanted, but haven’t worked out. I used Keita as an example but depending on your perspective that could also extend to Ox, Origi, Shaqiri and Minamino, however there is no doubt that Keita is by far and away the worst.

While lots of our players were terrible against Madrid, to use that as an excuse to virtue signal in defence of Naby Keita is quite a confusing stance to take for anybody who loves the club. Of course other players were bad in that one game, but it’s not about one game. It’s within the context of the history of Keita’s consistently poor and often effortless performances in a Liverpool shirt. He’s barely played all season, he should have had fresh legs and been raring to go, given one last huge opportunity by Klopp in the biggest game of the season (which I think everyone felt even before the game was an astonishing and undeserved show of faith in his abilities) and then he goes out on the pitch and does that. Wijnaldum was just as bad, but he at least has half the excuse of being tired and has been a far better player for Liverpool than Keita has, despite his performance also being one that was an accurate representation of his usual pattern of behaviour.

That’s what it’s all about, if you’ve been putting in the hard work for years then you have that credit in the bank and we know that a poor performance isn’t a true representation of who that player is, but in the case of Keita that’s all he’s ever been. He’s been given way too many opportunities and treated all of them with nothing more than contempt for Liverpool Football Club, and while there were many other players who were awful against Madrid, I have no doubt that they would have played a lot better had literally anybody other than Keita and Wijnaldum been playing in their place, such was their lack of effort and ineptitude. It was like playing with nine men in that first half and i’m not suddenly going to treat someone like Jota the same as Keita because he had one bad half that was sabotaged by other players who couldn’t give a toss.

So personally I think supporters are well within their rights as fans to speak unfavourably about Naby Keita, as he’s consistently made a mockery of the only thing that Liverpool supporters ever ask of their players; that you respect the club and try your best. Now I don’t ever want to tell another supporter how it is best that they go about their supporting, but if you’re going to go out of your way to take swipes at other fans for holding certain individuals accountable for disrespecting our beloved club, i find that both baffling and concerning.

15.) 16 Apr 2021 05:52:16
Well within their rights to speak unfavourably, when he's actually the topic of conversation. But lately on here someone could post"lovely day isn't it guys? "and someone would reply "yeh, but it would be a good 10 degrees warmer if Keita wasnt at the club". safe in the knowledge his post will get a few nice little thumbs up.

16.) 16 Apr 2021 12:31:25
It would feel warmer if Keita wasn't at the club, sure it would lift the mood of a lot of people.

05 Jul 2019 11:54:28
Anymore on Keita and his work permit? Heard he may have to be loaned out!

Ben elf

{Ed002's Note - I am aware of there having been suggestions of a loan or sale but I know nothing of such proposals. Liverpool need to get him to pass the test and he will then get a new WP.}

1.) 05 Jul 2019 12:24:19
What a mess.

2.) 05 Jul 2019 15:10:07
Ed02 is the issue him not being able to speak English when he came over here? I hope he has taken the necessary steps to ensure he will pass.

{Ed002's Note - Right.}

3.) 05 Jul 2019 16:29:05
Why is OK for Aguero, Tevez and Fellaini not to be able to speak English? Is it because the Guinea national team is not considered a high enough pedigree?

{Ed002's Note - Fellaini speaks very good English. Aguero and Tevez speak English pretty poorly - but enough to qualify for the full two year WP. The work permits have nothing to do with the national teams. Liverpool have given him two years to sort this out - but he spent the first year just acting as a jerk, offending people and getting himself a serious conviction.}

4.) 05 Jul 2019 17:48:37
If tevez can pass it surely keita can. And if we tried to sell him we'd have our pants pulled down.

5.) 05 Jul 2019 18:08:41
Ah sorry Ed002. I was basing it from when Fellaini was at Everton. I think it was Phil Neville that said he'd never met anyone with worse English. Glad to hear he knuckled down and learnt it.

Isn't Firmino's English very poor, and from memory, also Diego Costa could hardly speak a word?

{Ed002's Note - They have all managed to pass the test.}

6.) 05 Jul 2019 20:05:21
Fair play to them then Ed002. I thought the only English words that Diego Costa knew was "f*ck" and "off".

{Ed002's Note - Chelsea use language teachers and have only had problems with one player struggling a bit recently - although he got there in the end.}

7.) 05 Jul 2019 20:41:59
E02, Fellaini is Belgian so if you don't mind me asking, how does the WP issue apply to him as Belgium is within the EU zone, pls?

{Ed002's Note - He doesn't have a WP issue.}

Gini is quite clearly not a defensive midfielder. You only have to watch him play for his national side to see that. He has struggled sitting in front of the back 4 and plays his best football going forward. Milner is mr dependable on the pitch in any position you want. Neither of those players deserve disrespect.
