Sad times, we have lost a true legend, my thoughts are with Rays family.
For me Ray was the greatest red goalkeeper, I loved watching him play, safe hands, a colossus at the back, organising the defence yet the architect of so many of our attacks, his distribution was ahead of its time starting off some of our greatest, do you remember the Terry Mac goal v Spurs in the 7-0 win, Clem started the move, you won't find that on YouTube though.
For me the man became a legend when I was lucky enough to go to Melwood to watch the boys training, I was only about 10 yrs old and so nervous I couldn't ask any of the players for an autograph but Ray came over and took time to chat with me and have his photo taken with me, put me right at ease and helped to make one of the happiest days in my life.
RIP Ray YNWA.

RIP, RC! A true Legend and IMO, the best GK England has ever seen after Gordon Banks.

Following on from watching Bobbys goal and comparing it to Robbies v Utd in 95 have you seen his first goal, cut in from the left and blasted it past Schmeichel at the near post just like Sane v Karius, just shows how bad Scmeichel was, bet he was hung drawn and quartered as well. nope? That's probably because he was one of the best ever keepers and he too was human and made mistakes by being beaten at the near post, do you think rat boy Neville slated him for that?

1.) 16 Jan 2018 03:04:43
Scmeichel was pundit for Australian coverage of match. He said it was an inexcusable error Karius made and if he made it he wouldn’t talk to anyone for a month. funny how they forget. Perfect in retirement.

2.) 16 Jan 2018 03:07:16
Whilst I respect the sentiment and agree that Karius should be given time, I dislike the comparison. Schmeichel to
Karius, really? Even at that point in his career he had helped United to two league titles, and was one of the best goalkeepers in the world. A mistake from schmeichel isn’t the same as a mistake by Karius. Karius makes them quite often, almost as often as Mignolet, hence why they both get heavily criticised. Karius should be allowed to hold down the number 1 spot for the rest of the season and be given the chances that have been afforded to Mignolet but the double standards should stop. If that is Mignolet he’d be getting lynched, and we’re not talking about a guy who’s just made a few errors in Karius, let’s be real. I’ll back him and the managers decision to play whoever in goal but neither are good enough by my estimation, and if we ended up losing yesterday post like this wouldn’t exist. Dose of reality.

3.) 16 Jan 2018 03:17:56
Similar but not the same. Robbie didn't give him a chance whereas Karius himself knows he should have saved it. His reaction said it all.

He does deserve a chance though if we're not buying this window.

4.) 16 Jan 2018 07:31:48
I will not compare both GK's as that is a non issue, IMO. The shot could have been saved and Karius was PISSED afterwards. That shows that he cares and he has the right attitude. Migs has been beaten at his near post more times than I care to remember and after each goal, he would sulk, feeling sorry for himself. I want my players pissed off when they make mistakes. Karius will now get his chance and it is now ALL up to him/ The question now is will he get the support of the fans cos judging by the right bile and dross he is receiving on SM right now, I doubt it.

5.) 16 Jan 2018 08:06:39
Why don’t these multi-millionaire players with teams of agents who manage their careers PAY someone to manage their SM.
Lots of others celebrities do it. The footballers don’t need to read it at all. I really cannot understand it. Anyone can write virtually anything without consequence. An SM manager could block/ delete the bile before the player reads anything.

6.) 16 Jan 2018 09:01:19
I have to say some of the verbal bull that some people post to try and get a point across really takes the biscuit sometimes.

So Karius is pissed but Mignolet sulks and feels sorry for himself? I mean how do you know this? You dont! You are just charactor assassinating a player beacause of your dislike for him as a player.

He might not be the best but give the guy a break.

7.) 16 Jan 2018 13:15:21
Tell ya what, I got really really creeper out watching the Bobby-Robbie goal video, it was exactly the same in every way except Fowlers was slightly wider from goal and ended central instead of hitting the post and going in like Firmino's.
But the pass, the area they reached the ball, the shoulder barge, the keeper coming out and it being a chip shot was exactly the same 😱

And to the Schmeichel part, fans and pundits are so much more critical about players nowadays, partly because of the huge wages they demand compared to 10+ years ago, the "evolution" of the game, technology, training, the ball itself. but to be honest it’s probably mostly because of how much social media explodes nowadays when the likes of Neville say 1 thing about a player, everybody on the web adds to it to make it seem worse then the ball doesn't stop rolling and journalists add yo the comments too lol.

8.) 16 Jan 2018 13:18:18
as ed025 all ways says get your red tinted glass off Karius is just as bad as Migs if not worse look at the free kick he let in this year in the champions league think that's 11 games this season 2 mistakes that has led to goals and with only 3 wins from the 6 champions league games that we was in total control of them all. can't remember Karius making one save that made me think that's won us the games and as many mistakes as migs has made at end of last season he won us points with some good saves to get us champions league. my be when he makes a mistake he sulk because he knows what he is going to get for next month.

9.) 16 Jan 2018 21:03:22
How do I know, Irish Rover? I actually watch the games, that's how. Even Ed01 has said he has a poor attitude and a "oh woe is me" attitude whenever he concedes a sloppy goal. I have watched him have that sulky look on his face for years so I have nothing against him personally as you wrongly suggested.

Also, he got canned and he's moaning in the media like he has been hard done by. That must be a sick joke. Did you see Karius throw a strop after being dropped unfairly by Klopp thru media backlash last season? NO! He got on with his job and said NOTHING thru out the time until now. If you think that is character assasination then you need to look up the word cos telling the truth about someone's approach to football is not what that is.

Morning Eds and Reds.

Over the past few years we have suffered the same problem, an inconsistent defence. No matter how good our team has been, and I even go back to the great team of the 80’s. In my opinion I think that we have had at least one defensive position filled by a player that has had to be carried by those around him, whether it be Grobbelaar protected by some world class central defenders (Hansen et al) or a dodgy full back like Stig Inge Bjornebye all the way through to todays unacceptable bunch. But the one consistent position that hasn’t been filled with a world class player, again in my opinion, since the days of Clemence has been the goalkeeper.

Now don’t get too upset with me here but I am going to compare our beloved team with the dark side at the other end of the East Lancs. I have had this discussion with Utd fans before but I believe the most important signing they made which turned them from a very good team into the dominant force of English football for two decades was Peter Schmeichel. For years Utd produced teams with some great attacking flair, sprinkled with the odd great player such as Muhren and Thijssen but they never quite made it to the top because of their poor defence summed up by Gary Bailey. But once they signed Scmeichel their fortunes changed. They suddenly had a world class gk who not only kept the ball out but he organised his defence, Pallister and Bruce and several changes. Most Utd fans look to Cantona as the catalyst but I disagree because as I said their attacking flair had never been in doubt just their ability to defend.

Does that ring any bells for us? Of course it does, we need a keeper who can kick sh** out of the central defenders to make sure they concentrate for the full 90, can organise a back 4 to defend as a unit making sure that they play for each other and then we need him to do his own job with security and confidence and be that world class keeper we are sadly lacking. I honestly believe that even with the centre backs we have now a man of Scmeichels stature behind them would make them look a thousand times better, he would organise them and make sure they were better as a unit and give them the one thing they lack more than anything at the moment, confidence.

That’s the answer to our problems but the finer detail of who that miracle worker could be is beyond me at the moment because I just don’t see a player good enough out there with the exception of De Gea who wouldn’t cross the East Lancs to join us unfortunately.

Just my opinion and open to discussion. Thanks for your time.

Grobs was class mate
Up the pool.

2.) 15 Sep 2017 06:33:04
Spot on Istanbul, but I do still think Lovren and Klavan are not good enough.

3.) 15 Sep 2017 09:15:16
I said this ages ago! We need a keeper who throttles players when they balls up! I've never heard one player when I'm in anfield screaming at players! As I said when I played ball when u didn't clear your lines you'd turn around and see your big cb or keeper steaming towards u! LFC don't have that! They've hendo who's a nice guy 👍🏼.

4.) 15 Sep 2017 09:18:30
Grobs was a great keeper who bailed Hansen out plenty of times. Hansen made his fair share of errors.

5.) 15 Sep 2017 09:25:30
OP, I like your spirit and you make some very good points. However, football has changed massively from even 5 years ago and those rules in the era you speak of, no longer apply unfortunately. We would all like to think footie is an exact science and in some cases, it is. In most cases, it is not.

GK's don't do the "organization" of the defence thing anymore as only Buffon IMO, still does it as he is literally a coach on the pitch and a great one at that. Systems have killed the art of GK's being able to be forceful and organize things now due to coaches who are too insecure to accept outside input and want to be control freaks so even if the system is not working, they just replace the players BUT keep the system (in this case, defensive) in place.

I agree that we need a GK who can be forceful, vocal and get in people's faces BUT he has to be empowered to do that. Will Klopp do that with Migs or Karius or ward? I can't answer that. Now what I will say that Karius in the Seville game, showed glimpses that he could be that commanding figure at the back as he looked very sure of himself in what ever he did even tho, he was NEVER really tested. Could he be the guy? We will have to see cos he is still young and needs more games to show if he can do that.

6.) 15 Sep 2017 09:27:30
Between 2007-2010 Reina was easily world class. Top 3 keepers in the world in my opinion.

He would still walk into most teams in Europe even now in his mid 30's.

It is such a shame he made his position untenable, but what a drop down in quality to replace him with Mignolet ☹.

7.) 15 Sep 2017 10:34:52
Spot on, MK. I loved Reina too BUT his conduct and attitude near the end there was disgraceful. BR should never have signed Migs and Klopp should have binned him way back when. The both get the blame for the Migs issues.

8.) 15 Sep 2017 13:15:32
The back pass rule would have had a huge impact on Hansen, Grobblar/ Clemency.
A huge part of our European game was to play the ball along the back four and keeper to draw the opposition forward, then Hansen would get the ball, drop the shoulder and break forward with the ball splitting the opposition midfield,
Absolute class.

But with the back pass rule it has changed the whole system where the modern goalkeeper is to act nearly as a sweeper to allow the centre halfs to push up to play the high line.

Mark Lawrenson is one of the old school who would have been stool class in the modern game,

{Ed001's Note - I disagree, Grobs, Clemence and Lawrence all played a sweeper keeper role. What changed for us was quality of players, not the back pass rule. We had already lost our place at the summit of the game before the rule was introduced in 1992.}

9.) 15 Sep 2017 15:32:52
I agree with Istanbul about the importance of a gk. That is why I can't understand this constant rotation. Karius should be given the chance.

{Ed001's Note - rotating goalkeepers is always a mistake. It is not a position you can do that in. Klopp clearly prefers Karius, he has made that plain, so stand by your choice and get rid of Migs for heaven's sake! He is just not good enough.}

10.) 15 Sep 2017 15:59:41
You're right ed. There must be a reason why teams, all through the history of football, have never rotated that position. I guess there must be some other than us but it is extremely rare. Shouldve sold migs when karius came in. That way the temptation is gone.

{Ed001's Note - spot on mate. The few teams that have tried it tend to suffer because of it. A keeper is the organiser, the players in front of him need to understand him.}

11.) 15 Sep 2017 16:07:11
EDDS001,
Fully agree, by swapping MINGO and KARIUS it shows a weakness by the manager, he is getting paid an awful lot of money to make decisions and the goalkeeping one he is failing big time. by the way who's turn is it this week.

{Ed002's Note - Bogdan is near fit and has been registered by Liverpool for the Premier League.}

12.) 15 Sep 2017 17:12:48
Hi Ed,

Since the back pass rule started the keeper now has play the ball with his feet more often as he can no longer pick it up.

The option to take time out of the game by playing it back and forth to the keeper is now gone,

The keeper now has to be more able to play the ball with his feet while being closed down,

I don't remember Lawrence playing but I know Clemence and Grobb were top class, they were trained for the rules back then,

The skill set that was required for back then compared to now has changed.

No doubt they could have adapted.

I mentioned Mark Lawrenson as left sided centre half, with pace and the ability to fill in at left back, His skill set would still suit today.

{Ed001's Note - so would Hansen's, he was twice the player Lawro ever was. As for the keepers, all 3 would have been fine, the back pass rule only made a slight change, as we can see with the likes of Pep emphasising possession, they just make sure that the keeper can also pass the ball. Grobs, in particular, was very good on the ball.}

Dont know if this has already been asked but does anyone know if the Mancs win the Europa league they will automatically qualify for the CL, is this at the expense of the 4th Place Premier League spot or an extra spot for the English teams? My recurring nightmare is we scrape through into 4th spot just to see the Mancs pinch it off us through the Europa League. oh god Im sweating at the thought again.

Only if Leicester also win the Champions League.

2.) 18 Mar 2017 10:16:24
Thanks for that, Leicester won't win that so we should be ok, just like I predicted Leicester wouldn't win the league. oh dear here we go again!

3.) 18 Mar 2017 10:36:03
We should be aiming for 3rd/ 2nd and let some other team worry about that conundrum. Smack city about tomorrow. Get those 3 points on them and unleash the red juggurnaut for the remaining games.

Come on red men.

YNWA.

4.) 18 Mar 2017 14:58:56
We should be aiming to win the league, it's not over yet.

5.) 18 Mar 2017 15:32:05
Excellent Ron - This is for your eternal optimism.

Cheers.

6.) 18 Mar 2017 16:06:46
If both UTD and Leicester wins the EL and CL respectively then the team finishing 4th slips to EL next season. UTD have a good chance to get into the group stages if CL next season if they win the EL.

The only thing I would add to the debate is the way Bobby fits in with the "Team Spirit" which Jurgen has instilled into us. Take Bobby out and you take away from that feel good factor and then replace him with a player who is all about him and not the team and it impacts on other players.
Its great that we can even be considered with world class players but I wouldn't want any of them if they impacted on the togetherness we have right now.

The other quality that Lucas brings to the squad is his ability to get on with the squad and integrate new players, obviously he is an "older" member of the team but he has always been popular in the club and is definitely a player that the others look to and respect. With a growing Brazilian contingent I believe he has helped them settle into the club and the area and is probably one of the reasons why Couts didn't leave in the summer. So his influence on the team isn’t just what he does on the pitch but maybe more importantly what he brings to the team, making them a team.

Istanbul Fiver

{Ed001's Note - he is also the reason why Couts chose to join us in the first place.}

He won us an FA cup when Henchoz paid the referee off to ignore a raft of nailed on penalties.
Tbh I loved him when he played for us and he scored some fantastic goals for us.
It was a shame he played in the same era as Fowler otherwise the fans might have taken to him better.
I bow to eds superior knowledge but I will always remember Owen for his goals and match winning performances.
