Hi Eds, to break up the transfer horror I was just wondering if there were many Vegan footballers now? with the advances in nutrition I just wondered if there was a current trend towards plant based diets. A vegan friend of mine who is an ultra marathon runner swears that his recovery time is much better than when he ate meat. I went vegan in Nov and still feel lousy but had to ask the question.

Red simon

{Ed001's Note - I honestly have no idea. It is something I have not given any thought to until you asked.}

1.) 09 Jan 2018 15:31:26
You wouldn’t need to ask, they’d soon let you know if they were.

2.) 09 Jan 2018 15:50:15
I think it is risky for athletes to do so, personally, purely because they are at a disadvantage. David Haye for example, has found it near impossible to compete since turning Vegan. His injuries take ages to recover, and never seem to fully recover either. There is simply no denying that the quickest and most efficient way to get protein into the body is to eat meat. Even these modern shakes and supplements aren't as effective as a good old fashioned tuna steak! As most vegan activists will attest though, meat also has a lot of bad things in it that can affect performance levels though.

I respect everyone's rights to choose their own lifestyle (and that everyone's body is unique) but having studied nutrition, I think cutting meat from the diet and competing at the highest levels of sport are very hard to do. Not impossible, but very difficult! Having said that, the meat and dairy industry is falling apart due to ever tightening legislations and people wanting something for nothing by refusing to pay more because "when i was a wee lad milk was 5 pence a pint". So one day we may all have to be vegan by default!

When you look at the size and power of some vegan animals though (horses, gorillas etc) it's hard to argue people couldn't adapt long term.

3.) 09 Jan 2018 15:46:25
Following on from Mr Dennis’s comment, I’m vegan 🙂

I have been for three years and the one thing I have noticed is my recovery from hangovers takes half the time it use to lol.

{Ed025's Note - my hangover cure is a full english in the morning followed by a lamb roast dinner for tea, i love meat and would struggle to be a vegetarian or vegan carra, and that quorn thing tastes like chipboard mate..

4.) 09 Jan 2018 15:54:42
Well said Mr Dennis haha.

5.) 09 Jan 2018 16:27:46
There is a lad called Jonny Marsh who is the personal chef for a lot of city players and did a bunch of interviews for BBC and local news a few months ago. From following him for a while as a chef in general, he doesn't seem to spend a lot of time making vegan meals and has discussed a lot of non-vegan meals that he gets requests for. Granted that's one team as far as I know that he works for, but using that as a barometer I'd suggest that no, there aren't many vegans.

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any vegan footballers at all. There are plenty of vegetarians and plenty that stick to fish, but no vegans.}

6.) 09 Jan 2018 16:38:57
Ed, Google search what quorn is and how they make it 😂 put me right off!

{Ed025's Note - i was bigging it up calling it chipboard then MK..

7.) 09 Jan 2018 17:06:58
As a start, let us replace the terminology “vegan” by “plant based”, as veganism is a holistic lifestyle according to a value set.

In general:
The challenge for the body when eating meat and dairy products is in the impact on the pH-level of the body – the digestion of meat and dairy increases the acid level of the body. The increased acid level has a negative impact on the muscle and joints as it amplifies inflammation amongst other negative impact.

So as mentioned above: the less meat and dairy you eat the faster you can recover and less injury prone you are – both meaning, you can train more and harder. In professional sports this can make a major difference.

In a nutshell: the consumption of meat and dairy have a negative impact on the performance and avoiding them can mean a competitive advantage.

Looking at football my information is, for example:
Lewandowski is plant based. Messi doesn’t eat meat. The German national team winning the world cup in 2014 eliminated dairy and red meat from their diet. (There are many more examples, just google them. )

Concerning Liverpool:
Liverpool FC have a lady called Mona Nemmer responsible for the diet. There are quite a few interesting interviews with her on sports nutrition. She does not promote being 100% plant based, but – amongst other points - she emphasises that dairy products and red meat should be minimised as much as possible (due to above mentioned negative effects) .

Sports in general:
Novak Djokovic and Venus Williams are plant based. Louis Hamilton is plant based. Carl Lewis was vegetarian and then plant based. (Again, there are many example of top athletes, just google them. )

General remark:
There is one common myth/ misinformation: You do not get enough nutrition on a plant based diet. That is simply wrong as the most vitamins and minerals etc. are in plants. So the nutrition is not the challenge. The challenge is, that plants have a lower energy density (especially concerning fats) than meat and dairy. So the key for a plant based athlete is to know how and where to get sufficient energy from.
Same story concerning proteins. Plants provide healthier and more than enough proteins.

Great books to read on plant based diets are “Eat& Run” by Scott Jurek and “Thrive” by Brendan Brazier.

{Ed025's Note - some very interesting stuff there stockfield, not for me though mate as my athletic days are well and truly over and i cant resist the lure of meat, we have canine teeth for a reason and its not for eating grass and such..

8.) 09 Jan 2018 17:19:19
I'd rather eat chipboard than fungus grown in a petri dish by Dr Who 😂.

9.) 09 Jan 2018 17:48:25
With all due respect, ED25, I was not referring to personal taste preference but to maximising athletic performance by food intake…

And I really hate to disappoint you, but if you compare your teeth with the teeth of a canine, then you will find massive differences. (For the fun of it: photoshop your teeth into the picture of a lion and lion’s teeth into a picture of you smiling. If it looks stupid, you found out the truth. Second test: run onto a field and try to kill a cow or rabbit or whatever you are quick enough to catch and try to kill it with your teeth. Good luck! ;-) )

Plus, our jaws can grind sideways, which canine jaws can not.

Bottom line: from an evolutionary and genetically point of view we can chew and digest meat. Saying that, our ancestors (gatherers and hunters) were on a 80/ 90% plants and 10/ 20% meat diet. So just do not overdo it…

Our hospitals are full with people who suffer the consequences of too much meat dairy and sugar. Haven’t seen a wards full of vegans dying of malnutrition and lack of proteins, yet… :-D.

{Ed025's Note - i have to admit stockfield, i love meat, cheese, milk and have 3 sugars in my tea, i also smoke like a trooper and drink like a fish...but besides that im a picture of health mate..

10.) 09 Jan 2018 17:55:48
Was 'In a nutshell' a pun stock field? ;)

11.) 09 Jan 2018 18:04:33
Ed25, lately I have been following Romanian football a bit as my girl is from there. You seem to have taken one or two pages out of their professional diet. :-D
Anyways, thanks for the banter. It is an interesting topic. :-)

{Ed025's Note - it is stockified mate...nice one..

12.) 09 Jan 2018 18:07:17
Firmane, English is not my mothertongue. Any pun is pure coincidence. Just as our defending, at times. ;-)

13.) 09 Jan 2018 18:27:56
@ Red simon

“I went vegan in Nov and still feel lousy”

I can not give specific advice, as I do not know what your food intake is. But 3 general points:

- It is absolutely normal to feel lousy during the first weeks/ months of transition (yes, we are always in transition on the Liverpool page) as your body is detoxing from the harmful substances in meat and dairy.

- Meat and dairy is a provider for energy (mainly fats and proteins) . Plants have a lower energy density. So it is vital to increase the intake of “good fats” (hemp oil, linseed oil, avocado, nuts), or you will feel weak and fatigue due to the lack of energy.

- One thing you have to substitute is B12, which you can easily get in a pharmacy. (B12 is a bacteria in the soil and on the plants. This is where the animals we eat get the B12 from. As the slaughter animals are fed with all kind of shit, they are also substituted with B12. You are just cutting out the middle man. Just as info. )

Maybe take a blood test to check iron, B12 and omega3 levels.

Sorry for turning a football page into a diet page, just wanted to support a fellow fan….

14.) 09 Jan 2018 18:31:26
Most vegans I know look ill.

15.) 09 Jan 2018 18:32:15
MK, don't be fooled by an academic class on nutrition as they are feeding you (excuse the pun) nonsense which comes from way above.

Although I am not a vegan, I haven't eaten meat for years and actively train in MMA and Muay Thai for years. I have found that it never affects me as my strength is good and I can still get the miles on a road. My bruising also clears up so much more quickly than what it did eating red meat as it replaced with Kale, broccoli and spinach.

Don't ever believe the bull what they tell you as only experiencing it can truly tell you whether It works, and I can assure you from experience, mates and gym colleagues that not eating meat not only makes people feel physically better, but also provides that sense of mental awakening which is assuring.

16.) 09 Jan 2018 17:30:23
Quorn is horrible, I don’t touch the stuff ed.
Fortunately for me my partner is a nutritionist and a very good cook so the lifestyle choice is of little effort for me.

{Ed025's Note - your a very lucky man mate..

17.) 09 Jan 2018 18:23:59
Stockified that was a fairly balanced and interesting couple of posts about vegetarian diets and athletes etc. Then I got to the flippant swooping statement that the hospitals are full of people dying from eating too much meat dairy and sugar. It is the statement about sugar I find fairly offensive as it's the thing people say to diabetics wrongly. Yes type2 can live and control their condition through diet and exercise. And they are generally at fault for their own condition. Yet type1 diabetics which is the condition I suffer with stems from pancreas failure essentially and is most definitely not caused through eating too much sugar being over weight or lack of exercise. Not having a go but all diabetics are tarred with the same brush wrongly regrettably.

{Ed025's Note - fair point mate..

18.) 09 Jan 2018 19:18:58
Vegans? What about Vulcans and Klingons?

{Ed025's Note - they are all the same yuri..out of this world mate.. :)

19.) 09 Jan 2018 19:23:40
p1, I am really sorry should my remark have offended or insulted you. That was not my intention.

I did not mention any specific sickness, as the causes obviously vary.

My point was, unfortunately a lot of illnesses are caused by diet.
And personally I blame the misinformation by the food industry who focus on shareholder value and not on the health and well-being of their costumers.

20.) 09 Jan 2018 19:44:10
Not offended at all just the sugar statement is what all diabetics get bashed with as most people are ignorant to the condition and don't realise if suffering from a hypo a diabetic desperately needs sugar or carbohydrates quickly. Yet when suffering a hypo people say stupid things like you can't eat sugar. You can't eat chocolate or the best one take some more insulin then which is the polar opposite of what you should do.

21.) 09 Jan 2018 19:54:53
Got your point. It's a complex topic and the simplification of a statement can lead to misunderstandings. My bad.

22.) 09 Jan 2018 20:31:10
The only diet proven to lower your risk of lots of life limiting illnesses - vegan. I’m not a vegan, but it is the healthy choice, no doubt.

23.) 09 Jan 2018 22:46:36
Aren't Forest Green Rovers a vegan club?

24.) 09 Jan 2018 23:38:11
Jack Wilshere is on a Gluten free and Dairy free diet, says that he started it after returning to Arsenal and its kept him in peak physical shape.

25.) 10 Jan 2018 01:09:15
Jermaine Defoe is Vegan.

Just recalling Ed01s comments on VVD and in particular his game awareness. whilst he looked good at Southampton would our system not expose him just as much as it does Lovren? a lot of money and possibly a gamble?

Red simon

1.) 02 Jun 2017 12:52:56
Apart from fact VVD is very quick compared to lovren. As he showed on a few occasions, getting back at Mane to make great block. Also stronger and better on the ball. Offers a goal threat more so than lovren etc. I think he would be brilliant signing, and have said since watching him a lot at celtic a top premiership side should sign him back then!

2.) 02 Jun 2017 13:03:56
every transfer is a gamble, and just like gambling some pay off and some don't. Van Dijk is physically far superior to Lovren though, in size and strength and most importantly pace.

3.) 02 Jun 2017 13:08:23
Lovren is not a bad defender. The lack of protection exposes the defensive line. We need a DM.

VVD not happening anyway but great point Red.

4.) 02 Jun 2017 13:30:16
Truly hope you are both right! I haven't watched him closely enough but hopefully Hendo will be around more to screen those counterattacks anyway.

5.) 03 Jun 2017 23:43:35
I agree with you, Red and Bedd. VVD ain't going to happen and for that price, I am glad as he is not even close to being worth it. He lacks game awareness, concentration and positioning.

He also plays in a team with potentially two DM's in Romeu and/ or Classie/ Hojbjerg in front of him hence, he is well protected. That would not happen here (as we don't play with a pure DM) as our CB's are often exposed and would be required to defend one on one during counter attacks. This is where he will be found out and frankly, I'd either get someone better for cheaper or coach up the CB's we currently have now.

12 May 2017 13:22:50
question for Ed01 if you have the time. If you were an opposition manager of say stoke, west brom or palace, how would you set up to beat us or contain. interesting to know your thoughts on how to beat the press or which spaces to target etc.

Red simon

{Ed001's Note - the usual choice to beat a press is to drop deep and play long from the back. When a team presses, it has to leave space in behind, so the usual thing is to tempt a high pressing into chasing right onto the keeper and the keeper play it into the space. That is one of the reasons Pep wants a keeper who can kick the ball well, as he knows his team is vulnerable to a press.}

1.) 12 May 2017 16:28:26
Watch palace, southampton or any team not in the top 6 as theybe got it sussed.

Of course its because are plahers don't try hard enough, nothing to do with klopp.

{Ed025's Note - its not because they dont try enough supermane its just that some of them are simply not good enough mate..

2.) 12 May 2017 16:34:43
If any of the EDDS r around, if worst comes to the worst and we didn't qualify for the champions league would the owners be looking to sell up, because let's be fair there ownership has a certain timescale, so if it doesn't happen for us how does the land lie.

{Ed002's Note - This season will be another disappointment regardless but they will stick at it until the right sort of offer comes along. At the moment we are seeing significant additional income from media rights and that eases the pain. UEFA will make a concerted effort to try and level the playing fields again which, if successful, could hit clubs like Liverpool very hard.}

3.) 12 May 2017 17:02:12
Sorry Ed002 but just to clarify, level what playing field? The field of what clubs earn from media rights, or just what clubs can spend in general?

{Ed002's Note - European football is completely distorted by the spending power of some clubs and the income of others. Debt at some clubs is out of hand, others work within what they earn. Then you add to that the tax issues that HMRC and the DGFP are trying to resolve, the tax issue regarding Monaco that cannot be resolved, the investigation in to agent payments that has dragged in Manchester United, Liverpool and other sides etc., the return of image rights issues and you can start to see it is far from a level playing field.}

4.) 12 May 2017 18:03:42
When I was at school we never played on level playing fields 🤔.

5.) 12 May 2017 16:59:32
Ed025 - it can be two things!

{Ed025's Note - it can be hjikie but klopp would not accept that, work rate is a major part of his philosophy as studge has found out to his cost mate..

29 Mar 2017 16:02:11
Hi, quick question for ED02 if possible. Do clubs have a customer relationship manager to deal purely with agents? with it being such an integral part of the business I assume this would be important? Love the sharkopod by the way. You have intriguing multi media skills.

Red simon

{Ed002's Note - No not a Customer Relations Manager. Normally it would be the Sporting Director who deals with agents - previously Mr Ayre did it.

Thanks for the comment about the Sharkopod.}

1.) 29 Mar 2017 21:22:27
Would it be difficult for someone like Edwards, who I assume hasn't previously been involved in such situations, to get involved and complete deals?

Im proudly watching tonight (as I have done every round) with my dad who is just getting over a serious illness. we've had lots of joy, laughs and a few tears (mignolets kicks) . Thanks to Klopp we have experienced entertainment, passion and a few swear words but above all, football has transcended life and brought happiness to an old man. long may Klopp reign and win or lose tonight, he's done us all proud.

Red simon

1.) 18 May 2016 17:00:58
That's brilliant Simon hope you and your dad have a great time. Enjoy every moment with him.

2.) 18 May 2016 17:28:36
Hope you and your dad have a nice time.

3.) 18 May 2016 17:47:23
Good luck to the boys tonight and to your dad Simon. Hope he recovers well mate.

please get off Ed02s back - without him no one would read the site except for a few die hards (or insert another noun) . just check out the Man Utd pages if you want to see that kind of future.

Thanks for the prompt reply ed, I imagine it would be too great a business risk to keep Rodgers beyond this season with the need for success so pivotal in the owners strategy.
