Ed002 - any truth that we have submitted an "opening offer" for Gabri Veiga? I know he was linked a while back, but all seemed to have gone quiet on that front?

RedChester

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware if an offer has actually being made.}

Im an infrequent poster on here, but have been an avid reader for many years.
A little over a year ago my cousin Emilia, a proud scouser, sadly passed away from metastatic melanoma (skin cancer), aged just 28.
In her memory I'm trying to raise money for the wonderful Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, who provided incredible care to her and support to our family during such a tough time.
To do this I've set myself the daft challenge of running from my home in Chester to Anglesey, North Wales, a distance of 84 miles, over 3 days. Basically a marathon and a bit, for 3 days in a row.
If anyone on here is in a position to be able to donate here anything at all, no matter the amount, I would be incredibly grateful.

Thank you.

RedChester

1.) 06 Mar 2023 20:46:59
No problem whatsoever with donating to this worthy cause, RC. The staff at the Clatterbridge at Aintree (based at none other than the Marina Dalglish Centre, funded by the King's wife's charity) in 2022 nursed my Mum through cancer. She was given the all clear just before Christmas. At the most intensive period of treatment I came back from Canada to live with her for three months. During this period a friend gave me his ticket for the City game at Anfield which we won 1-0. I've never experienced an atmosphere like it. Anyway, I digress. So sorry for your loss, and all the very best with your three marathons. I've done one before, and never run since! You'll need it! Good luck.

2.) 06 Mar 2023 21:48:40
Happy to help. Good luck Redchester ?.

3.) 06 Mar 2023 22:35:37
Absolutely Red Chester. How do we donate?

4.) 06 Mar 2023 22:42:56
Absolutely blown away by people's generosity, from the bottom of my heart thank you so much.
That people would do that for someone they don't know and have never met is staggering. Seriously, thank you.
And fantastic news about your mum Stoneage, delighted to hear she's had the all clear mate.

5.) 07 Mar 2023 00:06:04
Beckers pecker thank you so much mate. There should be a link towards the bottom of the original post where it says donate here ??.

6.) 07 Mar 2023 07:18:52
Red chester. I'm more than happy to donate. If you could post up the day and time and join you for a few miles to give you some company. I'm from deeside so I'm assuming you'll be passing.

7.) 07 Mar 2023 08:38:17
I've had the same thing with my Mum stoneage, fingers crossed for a full recovery for your Mum. Sunday must have been a big boost for you!

8.) 07 Mar 2023 08:44:59
Sorry RedChester I can’t see any link. Am I being thick?

9.) 07 Mar 2023 09:03:49
OP, Stay blessed, man.

10.) 07 Mar 2023 11:24:03
BP - in the last paragraph of the original post, if you click on the words 'donate here' it should take you through to the donation page mate.
Ashy - got a few months yet, setting off Thurs 8th June, will be going somewhere near Deeside/ Shotton area though. A bit of company would be great!

Ed001 - every chance you've already done this and I've missed it, but if you haven't and time allows I'd love to see a 1-20 of the current PL managers in your opinion, where you'd rank them and why.
Have to confess to not knowing much about the likes of Frank, Lage and Xisco as managers so interested to know what you think of them as well as the big names.

RedChester

{Ed001's Note - 20. Mikel Arteta

I know he is on a good run and being lauded as the next 'Arsene Wenger' ludicrously, but it is ridiculous and he has done nothing to deserve the hype. Awful coach, awful tactician, awful man manager.

19. Xisco

I don't know enough about him to put him anywhere else on the list.

18. Nuno Espirito Santo

Tedious defensive minded football from an extremely negative coach. Awful to watch and fails to make the most of what he has at hand.

17. Bruno Lage

An unknown quantity but with a poor track record, which must be a worry for Wolves' fans.

16. Daniel Farke

Nice footie but he simply can't get the team to compete. At the very least they should make games difficult but they rarely do even that much.

15. Patrick Vieira

Starts well and gets his teams to play some good football but his teams have always got worse after that good start and he has shown no capacity to turn things around.

14. Ralph Hasenhutl

A bizarre coach who seems to hit on the right approach and immediately throw it all out of the window. Far too loyal to dross players like Redmond and Djenepo, who offer his team nothing.

13. Steve Bruce

Out of his depth in the Premier League really, but a very good Championship-level coach.

12. Thomas Frank

Too early to put him higher, especially as he is in charge of a club where it is all set up and all he has to do is coach the style of play. He has done a fantastic job there but still a lot to prove.

11. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

No tactical acumen and the coaching under him has been appalling, not one player has improved technically at all. Could easily have been below Frank and Bruce, but he has managed to deal well with big egos.

10. David Moyes

Did well up to a point at Everton and now in a similar position at West Ham. When it comes to the big games his mindset is too negative and that holds him back from taking the next step and why he failed in so many jobs before the Hammers.

9. Brendan Rodgers

Very good at coaching and improving youngsters, but his tactical acumen is lacking and he has a tendency to try and buy players to fill the gaps the youngsters could have filled. Never seems to be able to just get that little bit out of the team when it matters.

8. Sean Dyche

Has worked a minor miracle at Burnley, but the style of play is not easy on the eye. Having said that, with the players he can afford to recruit, Dyche has little choice in the way he plays. I would like to see him given a chance with a bigger budget to see what he could do with better quality players at his disposal.

7. Rafael Benitez

A very good tactician and coach but often can struggle to connect with the players. Also needs to improve his work on bringing through youngsters.

6. Dean Smith

Came through the Brentford school of coaching and has his Villa side looking an excellent unit who can beat anyone on their day.

5. Thomas Tuchel

Too negative in his mindset, but a very good man manager whose players usually love him. He does have a tendency to fall out with those above him though.

4. Marcelo Bielsa

Mad as a March hare, but one of the best coaches in history. As a manager he does need to be more pragmatic at times.

3. Graham Potter

Worked a miracle in Sweden before returning to English football. A great coach who can build a club if given time. Really should be in the frame for a much bigger job by now.

2. Pep Guardiola

Needs to prove he can do it without having everything handed to him on a plate and that he can actually improve a team in the long term. Even with a billion to spend, it is arguable that he inherited a better side than the one he is in charge of now. He does win things at a remarkable rate but it would probably be harder not to with the teams he has been given.

1. Jurgen Klopp

I have to go with him. Even though he did show weaknesses last season, it was a unique set of circumstances which badly affected him.

1.) 27 Sep 2021 07:23:36
What was his weakness last season Ed001?Was it not trusting Nat and Williams?

{Ed001's Note - well Nat more than Williams, as Rhys struggled badly at first. But he only needed one of them to begin with and he could have kept the midfield intact.}

2.) 27 Sep 2021 09:16:41
I agree with you about last season ed. Do you think though that Klopp didn't actually realise that Phillips had those level of performances in him? I would suggest that bringing in Phillips was one of the main reasons we made the top 4, not just because of his defensive performances, but also because it allowed us to play with our first choice midfield.

{Ed001's Note - if Klopp didn't realise then it was still an error, as it is his job to know these things.}

3.) 27 Sep 2021 09:55:16
Great read, ED01. I fully agree with you o n Tuchel Pep and Klopp. I have observed this about Tuchel tho and you touhed on it in the podcast last week. When Tuchel was at BVB, his team played very good and fluid attacking football. The same happened with some extent at PSG.

Suddenly when he arrived at Chelsea, he started setting them up to be more pragmatic playing a back 5 and playing negative footie, like he did in the CL and has been doing this season culminating in the embarrassing loss vs City where he started 8 defensive players and just keeps playing Tony Pulis footie but with better players, really.

Now I can understand that cos Chelsea couldn't stop a nose bleed under Lampard cos maybe their defence and CB's weren't good enuff when exposed esp. with Rudiger, Zouma and Silva and they were too open so I get that. Therefore, was it a case of Tuchel playing attacking footie at BVB and PSG cos those were the types of players he had OR did he just turn negative when he came to Chelsea for some reason cos it worked in the CL? Cheers, man.

{Ed001's Note - he took over teams that played that way and gradually made them more defensive over time. He has just quickened the process with Chelsea.}

4.) 27 Sep 2021 10:04:01
You're a gent Ed001 mate, appreciate that.
Nice to see Potter so high up the list, seems like a genuinely nice guy and often massively underrated as a manager.

{Ed001's Note - very welcome RC.}

5.) 27 Sep 2021 11:08:56
Much appreciated, Ed01. This was the gap I was missing when I was studying Tuchel. At PSG specifically, he played attacking footie in the first couple of yrs then in the 18/ 19 season, he lost the League Cup 4_1 to Lille and then lost the French Cup 3-2 to Rennes after leading 2-0 playing open footie.

Now, I don't know if this is when the process of going negative began with PSG BUT in the 19/ 20 season is when he switched to a back 5 and has not changed since. Whether playing negative footie can win them a PL title? We will find out. Cheers once again, man.

{Ed001's Note - welcome.}

6.) 27 Sep 2021 13:38:06
Just a question on this, i don't really watch Leeds but when i have done i don't get what Bielsa brings to the table to be a top Coach , i get that he got them up from the Championship and they have energy to burn but not sure he has a plan B. But i do like Graham (Harry) Potter wielding his magic. Great post as always ED001.

{Ed001's Note - that's because you are only seeing Leeds, I have been watching him for many years and he makes players better. That is what makes him a great coach, not about the tactics.}

7.) 27 Sep 2021 22:46:21
Great review that and hard to argue with any of it. Potter has to be the next in line for a top job the way that Brighton team in the main play consistently is brilliant. If they had a proper goalscorer in their team they could make it into the top 6 for sure last season I watched them draw while wasting so many chances but still great to watch.

8.) 28 Sep 2021 03:26:35
An excellent post Ed mate. I agree with all, only thing I'd change is I'd swap pep for Bielsa. Bielsa in my opinion is just a genious of the game. He's the kind of man the game needs more of. What's going on this season is irrelevant to how good he really is. If it wasn't for Klopp, I'd be very interested to see what he could do at Liverpool.

{Ed001's Note - thanks mate. I was marking Bielsa down for management, rather than coaching.}

02 Jul 2020 23:10:03
Ed01 - away from the doom and gloom of that poor performance, wanted your take on VAR and in particular the handball rule.
Mahrez's disallowed goal - obviously in the grand scheme of things it meant nothing in that game, and more importantly the league, but in other circumstances that could have been a deciding factor in the championship.
We've had it go for and against us this season, and I can honestly say I've not agreed with it once. I get a goal being scored with a hand, accidentally or not, being disallowed, but surely they've got to look at this "accidental handball leading to a goal" b*****ks?

RedChester

{Ed001's Note - more to the point, how did they spot that but not Ederson's clear handball outside of the box? It is ridiculous ruling out their last goal for that, but even more stupid when they can't spot one that should be given, rather than one that shouldn't.}

1.) 02 Jul 2020 23:25:30
Genuine question - what do the rules say on that regarding a keeler out of his area?
Clear as day it hit his arm, but trying to take the red tinted glasses off (and I only saw one quick replay) it did look accidental.
Again though shows how ridiculous the rule is, if that can be classed as accidental and therefore not handball, but an accidental handball that leads to a goal IS handball?
Proper nonsense as far as I'm concerned.

2.) 03 Jul 2020 01:50:06
I thought VAR is there to back up the refs decisions, not to call a foul. The ref didn’t blow for Edersons handball outside the box so VAR can’t intervene. Right?

3.) 03 Jul 2020 02:54:36
I thought I was the only one that saw Ederson clearly touched the ball with his hand when he came flying out. Thought I was going mad when none of the commentators mentioned it.

4.) 03 Jul 2020 07:56:52
This is the the biggest flaw in the rules at the moment in my eyes, because it’s one rule attacking, another defending.

I hate the ‘if the ball touched an arm it’s no goal’ rule. As a attached you could have had a flick of your arm from a deflected cross 3 metres away, no movement towards the ball and no unnatural position. You could then be stood with an open goal, but you’d be better served turning around and passing to your own goalkeeper, because you know it’ll be disallowed.

But a defender it’s completely different.

There needs to be clear guidelines - there needs to be the same rules no matter where on the pitch you are.

I’d also most say if you have made every effort to not let it hit your hands, ie they are by your side and no movement towards the ball, a pen or foul should not be given.

5.) 03 Jul 2020 08:03:01
The rule has to change next year, they put it in to try and make it black and white but now you just have loads of goals cancelled out for little reason.

6.) 03 Jul 2020 13:51:09
That whole handball rule is a complete disaster and I knew it the moment City dropped two points vs Spurs very early in the season. And the worst, Ederson clearly handled the ball outside of the box when challenging Salah and still, nothing. Disgraceful.

7.) 03 Jul 2020 22:42:06
they need to get VAR right going into the new season.

17 Jun 2020 21:02:38
They're really going to have to work on this Sky crowd noise thing, it's so unrealistic.

Actually sounds like there's fans inside the Etihad.

RedChester

1.) 17 Jun 2020 22:00:24
OP, I know, right?

2.) 17 Jun 2020 22:50:25
It’s brutal had to turn it off.

3.) 18 Jun 2020 16:56:20
Must have been really off putting for Arsenal.

Alright boys and girls,
After several shandy's last night attempted to come up with a new song about no.6.
Constructive criticism / absolute ridicule welcome 🙂

To the tune of "Drunken Sailor":

1 nil to Barcelona,
2 nil to Barcelona,
3 nil to Barcelona,
Mo said "Never Give Up".

1 nil Divock Origi,
2 nil Gini Wijnaldum,
3 nil Gini Wijnaldum,
Alexander-Arnold,

He looks up sees Barcelona sleeping,
Whips it in to Divock Origi,
Kop goes mad they don't believe it,
We're off to Madrid.

6 times in sunny Madrid,
6 times in sunny Madrid,
6 times in sunny Madrid,
Champions of Europe.

La la la-la la la la,
La la la-la la la la,
La la la-la la la la,
CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE.

Be gentle.

RedChester

{Ed025's Note - im sure andrew lloyd webber is quaking in his boots RC.. :)

1.) 29 Aug 2019 10:07:21
Don't reckon I should give up the day job just yet then ey Ed? 😂.

{Ed025's Note - only if your day job is songwriting RC.. :)

2.) 29 Aug 2019 10:32:11
I think you need to change your name to RedJester.

3.) 29 Aug 2019 11:23:09
The shandys were definitely last night?

4.) 29 Aug 2019 11:48:18
Hahaha I love mate!

5.) 29 Aug 2019 12:00:52
Struggling to believe I came up with such genius lyrics whilst p*ssed I assume, Lfcfan_03beef? 😉.

6.) 29 Aug 2019 12:36:57
Haha thanks Bmena, at least someone does!

7.) 29 Aug 2019 15:31:48
The lyrics aren't the best but the biggest issue is they don't even fit with the melody of the song. I'd give it a go again after you've slept the shandies off!

8.) 29 Aug 2019 10:56:17
Sometimes your words hurt Ed025.

{Ed025's Note - its no use me telling you that your the next bernie taupin RC and you ring up elton john with lyrics like those mate, zippy and bungle might be able to do a duet with it but i think thats the best advice i can offer.. :)

9.) 29 Aug 2019 11:55:03
Heres a list of 10 things you could have spent your time on which in my opinion would be better than your songwriting.

1. Cleaning the carpet
2. Reading Conn Iggulden
3. Knocking one out
4. Practising your South African accent
5. Plucking your nasal hairs
6. Thinking about all the ideas you have had that were going to make you rich that you never followed through on
7. Worrying about Boris Johnson
8. Working on your caligraphy
9. Knocking a second one out
10. Having a staring contest with the mirror

I'm sure there are more but these are my top 10 suggestions.

10.) 29 Aug 2019 12:29:38
Classic response Ed. I'm still laughing.

{Ed025's Note - cheers mate.. :)

11.) 29 Aug 2019 15:38:35
Or maybe you should read it again once you've had a few? 😉.

12.) 29 Aug 2019 15:57:44
Klucas87, I reckon you spent more time writing that list than I did the song!

13.) 29 Aug 2019 16:27:58
oh leave him alone . RedChester I loved it . most of it difficult to read not just sing but there is something happy about it and I love it . particularly the last bit
La la la-la la la la,
La la la-la la la la,
La la la-la la la la,
CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE.

just genius.

{Ed025's Note - i have written one as well roy, its called...we think we are the creme de la creme but have never won the prem, i have been composing it for 30 years mate.. :)

14.) 29 Aug 2019 17:34:08
Haha cheers Roy.

Some people just don't appreciate true artistry.

P. s. the third verse is meant to be Barcelona not Barcelona to fit in better. Reckon Ed025 has sabotaged it deliberately out of jealousy.

{Ed025's Note - if i did sabotage it RC i would be hero to millions mate..

15.) 29 Aug 2019 17:42:07
You've done it again! B a r c a.
Not Barcelona.

Jealousy is a terrible thing Ed.

{Ed025's Note - i have not changed anything RC it must be predictive text, but i predict it will go down like a lead balloon with barca or barcelona mate.. :)

16.) 29 Aug 2019 18:44:46
I predict this is one of those "Fabinho is a lemon" moments 😉.

{Ed025's Note - i dont think so RC, i may have made a mistake with fab but believe me im spot on with this one mate, its like a cross between shaddap you face by joe dolce and agadoo by black lace in musical terms.. :)

17.) 29 Aug 2019 19:30:42
Haha come on mate, it's not even that good! 😂

Sounded great in my head last night though!

Top banter as always Ed025.

{Ed025's Note - yeah i enjoyed it mate...the banter not the song.. :)

18.) 30 Aug 2019 14:46:01
I always knew RC was related to lennon.

Have to admit, can't stop hummong drunken sailor.

And lol @ the 10 things to do instead.

Indian Buzzer - are you really suggesting we need to sign someone as cover on the off chance that either Bobby or Jota are injured for the 2 games, TWO games, that we're without Salah or Mane? Seriously?
Should we sign a third left back just in case Robbo stubs his toe the same week Kostas has the sniffles?

This trolling is boring now. "Battle for top 5".
Man Utd in 6th, 44 points from 26 games, or 1.69 ppg so far. At their current form, they'll finish on 64 points. We're on 60 already. So by Walters logic we're in a "battle" to pick up 5 points from 12 games.
There's negativity, then there's trolling. Walter is the latter.

Ron they absolutely are. If a team are a goal down and lose someone to a 10 minute sin bin, they 100% park the bus until that player is back on. Only time that doesn't happen is a blue card coming out from about 75th minute onwards. Even at 70 mins, they park the bus and turn it into a snore fest for 10 and go for it for the last 10. Throw this in on top of VAR and the sport as a spectacle is on its knees.

Can't agree with anyone who likes the idea of this blue card.
I do agree more needs to be done to stamp out dissent, diving and deliberate cynical fouls, but a sin bin isn't the answer.
For those 10 minutes, the team down to 10 will park the bus and time waste. Yes you can stop the clock when they're rolling around feigning injury, but as a spectacle the game effectively comes to a stop for 10 minutes. Everyone's already sick of VAR slowing the game down and taking away the excitement, all a sin bin us going to do is make that 100 times worse.

I absolutely loved Torres. I've genuinely never been that excited about a new signing before or since, and he didn't disappoint.
That being said, I'd have Salah over Torres all day every day, different class.
