Haha shows how fickle some of our fans are I remember people calling him things like the next Gerrard/ Toure when he first signed. Can is a young player and still learning his trade granted he has been in poor form recently and the team are performing better with Wijnaldum (Captain of the Netherlands? ) in midfield ahead of him but that doesn't mean he should be sold! He's an excellent player that just needs to put his head down and work hard. A lad with a great attitude and seems to have a genuine fondness for the club and guys want rid because of a few average performances. He has been excellent for us since arriving and been played every position besides his own for two years without kicking up a fuss for the good of the team. He needs our patience and support now.

1.) 17 Feb 2017 08:32:33
Thats why he doesn't look to have improved becayse people claimed he was going to be that good and now he isn't well he isn't good at all.

STOP COMPARING ANY PLAYER UNDER THE AGE OF 20 TO THE SUPERSTARS IN THERE POSITION.

Its very rare they will become that even if they become good players.

2.) 17 Feb 2017 08:48:56
Doesn't cut the mustard with me pal and I've never ever considered him a possible replacement for stevie G wouldn't lace his boots I'm not saying he's a bad player but just not good enough to reach the standards of at least top 4 each season, young and room for improvement maybe but pace he lacks maybe with experience he might become a bit more cunning in his style of play which can make up for his lack of pace! A good squad player but no 1st teamer but that's just my opinion.

3.) 17 Feb 2017 08:52:13
Is he still a young player learning his trade?
This is a 23yr old lad in his 3rd season at Liverpool with about 100 games under his belt in England and Germany's top league. He's also a German international.

He's no rookie.

{Ed001's Note - still should be 3 or 4 years away from his peak, so yes learning.}

4.) 17 Feb 2017 09:29:29
Maybe if he wasn't trying to hold the club to to demand higher wages while completely not proving he's worth them he might be playing better.

5.) 17 Feb 2017 10:21:56
He needs time and support that's all. There's a good player in him. Matter of time before he shuts up all the doubters.

6.) 17 Feb 2017 10:43:10
He's got a lot of work to do is all I can say then.
Hope he does turn it around.
In 3 seasons I've watched him he doesn't seem to have much 'game intelligence' or awareness.
Loads of commitment, incredible stamina, just needs to up his technique and somehow develop the football intelligence to go with it.

7.) 17 Feb 2017 10:53:25
He'll never shut up the doubters. He has the ability, that's not in question for me. He's just too erratic in his form to be a top player, more likely to disappear into mediocrity than give a stellar performance. He may shut the doubters for a game or two but then the usual Can will come back. I said from the start he wasn't good enough. I watch a lot of bundesliga and the traits he shows now he has shown since his Leverkusen days. He hasn't really developed at all which worries me most about him. I don't like being too negative about one player but I think Can has too many flaws, even his temperament, he can be as prone to rash and unnecessary challenges as Moreno if things aren't going your way.

8.) 17 Feb 2017 11:06:14
Natural poolie, Emre's good performances come typically when he is handed a very simplified role.

9.) 17 Feb 2017 11:13:12
A very similar player to Igor Biscan for me.
Heart of a lion, will run all day but never really seems composed and seems to be chasing the game.
Last season I lost count of the number of times he'd leave his position in midfield to literally take the ball off Sakhos foot and then pass it to a player who had moved into the space he'd vacated. What was the point of that? Used to drive me potty. Also if put under pressure by an opponent, he'd seem to panic which is not what you want from a midfielder.

Don't want to tear into the lad, I'd love it if he did succeed, like I wanted Igor to succeed.

10.) 17 Feb 2017 11:05:25
Ed001, Can may be learning, but he is a very slow learner. He's done a poor job of keeping up with the curriculum, so there is a lot for him to catch up on. With all due respect to Emre, I'm not sure Liverpool should be a place for slow learners.

{Ed001's Note - why? Does it matter how quick they learn, so long as they do? Why are you so impatient? We can't afford to buy finished products and complete packages, so you need to learn patience or you are just going to get frustrated. Just remember Ian Rush was terrible for three years, but the club stuck with him. I am not saying Can is going to be at that level, but that you sometimes have to have patience with a player to achieve what they can.}

11.) 17 Feb 2017 11:41:44
Some players just doesn't cut at some clubs. that doesn't make him a bad player. Lazar Markovic is an example. He is not a bad player but wouldn't ever cut at Liverpool. Can is no exception. I would personally love the club to go and buy a world class CM. Someone more disciplined to sit deep and dictate the pace of the game ( Rabiot / Verratti / Carrick ) .

And for the matter of fact, I don't need another Gerrard, certainly not the way we play, moreover I have that position well covered under Coutinho and Lallana playing that advanced role. What I need is an Alonso. Gerrard was a brilliant CAM, we don't need a CAM nor Can would ever be a CAM.

The club over the years tried to replace player to player rather than positions which is why we are short on certain positions and over stocked in some other positions.

Can doesn't bring anything that is a must for the current system we play while we are desperately short in that holding midfielder role for which we have no genuine class. Can would never be that player.

Everyone would unanimously agree the need for a top class holding midfielder and someone has to make space for the new player. Hence Can.

This is strictly based on improvement for the first team.

Cheers.

12.) 17 Feb 2017 11:49:00
Much more ability than biscan. Can has got it and has showed it in snippets. Biscan in fairness wasn't a great player but was a cult figure with a catchy song. Can is much more than that. Be a mistake to sell him on.

13.) 17 Feb 2017 12:50:13
Ron, agree with you in general but the dropping into defence thing was clearly under instruction so I wouldn't hold that against him.

He may turn good but I'm getting a serious Ibe vibe about him, a player I was seriously excited about who turns out to be rather average.

14.) 17 Feb 2017 14:11:16
Sorry ed but I'm not convinced. It's really hard to show patience when the player barely displays any signs of improvement. I didn't expect him to be the finished product by now but expected at least some obvious improvements in his game. For me, he doesn't really have the natural football intelligence to cut it for us.

{Ed001's Note - maybe so but that is not for us to decide and you don't see him in training to make a judgement on that really. For me he has a lot of weaknesses to his game, but all things that can easily be fixed.}

15.) 17 Feb 2017 14:29:03
If they're easily fixed then why has it taken so long to fix? I heard he has a great work ethic at training, but something doesn't seem to be entirely getting through to him. My issue is that he's got too many weaknesses.

{Ed001's Note - because he has been messed about so much and in and out of the team in various positions. Why are you so hard on him? Lallana was terrible for years before it clicking this season, why can you not give the lad time and support?}

16.) 17 Feb 2017 14:36:45
True ed1 you say things better then I do mate and I 100% agree with what your saying. The lad needs more time, to me under Klopp he can be special it could go the other way but I seriously doubt it. But so called fans write him off far too easily give the lad more time, still at his age he needs to learn more no doubt about that but it doesn't mean he's going to be mediocre. Patience is key. Trust Klopp he knows better then us lot.

{Ed001's Note - he might never get it, but his issues are not the worst, so he deserves time.}

17.) 17 Feb 2017 16:19:53
For me, Can is currently a weak link. If money was no object and we only wanted short term success, we could sell him and go blitz £40m on an immediate improvement.

However, and I am one of Can's biggest critics, to write a young player off is insanity! Look at United with Pique and Pogba. Or look at us trying to swap Henderson for Clint Dempsey! Or Spurs offering Gareth Bale around because he was so poor nobody would touch him! Susi who we shipped off and is now a top player at AC Milan. We all wrote Lucas off until about 5 years ago people realised he was actually very good.

Look guys, Can may never make it. I have my doubts. I do not think we should make him a scapegoat for all our issues though. He is 23! The same people are writing off Kev Stewart as well. We need a holding midfielder? Hello people, we already have Stewart who Klopp loves and always puts in top performances when called on.

I would not lose sleep if Can was sold, but I wouldn't actively look to sell him. He has all the signs of a potential regret if we we're to sell. The bloke is an International for Germany! Average players don't get picked for Germany!

We are better than the common English rabble guys. Let's not right off Can so soon. He may be 23, but up until 18 months ago he was playing left back for Leverkusen, right back for Germany and centre back for Rodgers! He probably is behind in his development, but that didn't stop Drinkwater, Albrighton and Vardy from winning the title last season did it!

18.) 17 Feb 2017 17:18:38
MK, that just doesn't cut it, to take your argument to extremes we should never sign anyone and only play youth on the off chance they turn into superstars.

Players need to be evaluated and if they're not good enough they need to be moved on to make space for someone better. That may not even apply to Can yet but it's the correct way of doing business in general.

As for your examples you're cherry picking and it's part of this logical fallacy that because we might come to regret an action we shouldn't do it all.

Bottom line is that Can is part of the problems we've had this season and if he can't demonstrate he can be part of the solution then his future is in doubt.

19.) 17 Feb 2017 17:34:55
Ziege played for Bayern, AC Milan and over 70 appearances for Germany but was a complete failure for us. It is no guarantee.

The difference is the pace of the premier league. You have to have quick feet and speed of thought. The tempo is totally different in other leagues and indeed international football.
Being picked for Germany or thriving in a slower league does not mean you will succeed in the premier league.

20.) 17 Feb 2017 18:59:48
I knew I was reading Harry's post above even before I'd seen his name. Soon as I saw the names Rabiot/ Veratti I knew it was him. His latest man crushes!

21.) 17 Feb 2017 19:23:44
What is all this vitriol against Can? Seems like he has become the new Lucas. Fans always need to pick out a scapegoat. Be happy we do not have Aquilani lining up for us anymore and he did not get anywhere near the punishment Can is receiving.

22.) 17 Feb 2017 19:38:11
Can has weaknesses to his game and that is clear as even he alludes to that in his interviews. He also has qualities as well. His issues can be worked on and his qualities can be improved. I just feel that he hasn't found his right position yet in midfield and this is where coaching and patience comes in. he needs time and patience like we gave Hendo, Lallana and many others. If you are not willing to show patience with a player you want to come good, you don't deserve the player you eventually want him to be, period.

01 Feb 2017 08:44:44
Evening eds. Probably not going to happen but I will ask anyway.
Looking from the outside in, at Man City, it looks as though Pep has been finding any excuse to drop Aguero this season and maybe doesn't fancy him for his project especially with Jesus coming in and he looks a top prospect. So is there any chance of him leaving and would Liverpool be a possible destination? Seem to recall he almost signed under Benitez and claimed to be a fan at the time.
Also any Liverpool interest in Inaki Williams? Still raw but been watching him at Bilbao for a few years now and can't help but think he'd be perfect for the gegenpress. Him and Mane on opposite flanks would have defenses quaking in their boots.
Cheers

RedSmith

{Ed002's Note - Aguero won't be joining Liverpool.}

1.) 01 Feb 2017 09:31:13
Great player no doubt but give me Sanchez over him anyday, I know it won't happen but neither will Aguero, no chance on earth will they sell him to anybody in the PL

2.) 01 Feb 2017 10:08:36
A player who will be 29 by the next window, who has been playing since aged 17 at the top level, plagued by injuries, on massive wages.
I don't think it's a good move for Liverpool, China beckons.

3.) 01 Feb 2017 12:31:24
Atletico next for Aguero when Griezmann leaves for United in summer.

4.) 01 Feb 2017 13:54:06
Sanchez all day.

Thanks ed02. I posted a reply earlier today but doesn't seem to have been recieved.
Wanted to know your views on the current state of African football compared to similar continents like Asia and the Americas?

RedSmith

{Ed002's Note - Somehow I missed that and I should say that I am by no means an expert. I assume from your original question that you are from South Africa and when attending sporting events, stand up with your chums and shout "Bokka" (excuse the spelling but I attended a Rugby International against England a few years ago - so evidenced by experience). I know little of South African football and that was the reason for my asking someone for some input to your question earlier. As a country it is one that I was banned from entering for many years but, remarkably, for the last couple of years I am apparently allowed to return - I won't be. I know little of the game there. In terms of Central Africa, they have sustained their ability to turn out fit and strong players of varying degrees of quality. But they have turned out some exceptional talents over the past 20 years or so and I suspect that they will continue to do so. The players I know from the central nations are pretty much all good and straightforward people who do put money back in to their old communities. For that I salute them. North Africa is a different paradigm altogether. Good players have appeared (and I will note many seem to have been wingers - but that may just be a false observation from me). They have all too often not settled and, without trying to be disrespectful, there are plenty of examples of North Africans who have failed to integrate citing religion - and that sends alarm bells ringing for many clubs. The Cotonou Agreement has given entry to Spain but it seems more as a footstep elsewhere. The al Bangura tale was overplayed in my view but I do recall a discussion with Ed001 who took it very seriously 18 months or so ago. I would however concede that there has been quite a big deal going on in Belgium about it for perhaps four years and there are risidual issues to resolve.

As you look at the AFCON, most watchers without a real interest will find it tedious and boring to watch and would rather see a couple of lower league sides punch it out on a muddy pitch in the Midlands on a Tuesday evening in February. As a showcase the AFCON is, I am sorry to say, disposable. If it were to stop tomorrow I doubt Europe would be objecting.

I am sorry if this seems a tad depressing - but it is my view as it were. I do appreciate that it is not Liverpool related and maybe the site should have a page for such discussions - I don't think that there is one right now. But I do appreciate the question.}

Not often i ask a question ed2, and not that i am owed an answer in any shape or form, but why were u banned from entering s. Africa?
Convicted ivory poacher?
Conolial slave trader?
Bad taste in music?
Or the simple fact of being convicted of animal cruelty to sparkey?

{Ed002's Note - (a) I was never convicted. (b) We don't call them slaves. (c) I have a wonderful taste in music. (d) Sparkey takes his chances.

It was actually just "stuff" that got me in to trouble with them back in the day.}

3.) 19 Jan 2017 20:58:05
I use the word "stuff" with the wife to describe the next time we consumate the marriage. i hope you don't ise the word in the same context. or maybe that's quite cool a thing to get in trouble for?!?!

4.) 19 Jan 2017 20:44:51
A great read Ed02! Thanks!

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome man.}

5.) 19 Jan 2017 21:05:11
You a rugby fan then ed?

{Ed002's Note - No, I went with one of my wives on "membership" tickets and she had a cold. We were due to spend the night in London (as we were not living in England at the time) but she wanted to get off the train because it was packed. We got off at Richmond and wandered in to a quiet bar where only after a couple of drinks we noticed that they had a stripper the following day - Willie The Kid. We eventually got back in to town and back to the hotel. All in all in was not a great day. I should not that the game stopped for about 10 minutes in the first half - for reasons that were never explained to the crowd. It restarted with the pare official and the ref dealing with a curry from the previous night in the changing rooms.}

6.) 19 Jan 2017 21:11:16
I can't agree more with Ed regarding the standards of the AFCON. As a Nigerian who grew up there till age 22, I've been watching the AFCON since I was 12 in 1988 till now and frankly, the standard have dipped tremendously. In the 90s, African teams like us, Cameroun, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, and even Mali produced some of the finest talents the world has ever seen via this competition, that so many scouts used to come watch and had their fill of the best talents African football could offer.

To the point that in 1994, Pele and Platini came to watch that edition and some more afterwards. Even Mou went to watch the 2008 edition held in Ghana as a guest of Michael Essien. It used to be an honor to play this completion that players used to fight with their clubs just to play in it and enhance their reputations. That IMO, no longer exists.

Now, it has become quite tedious to watch and I've watched a few games in this edition and sorry to say, they are nothing to write home about. Some say players don't give their all anymore so as not to get injured and miss time with clubs. Some say there is a lack of interest when being held in "smaller" countries like Gabon. Who knows? But as for the standard? It has dipped massively.

7.) 20 Jan 2017 08:20:58
Hamilton, interesting stuff, do you see it eventually being phased out through lack of interest? Commercially, is it as lucrative as the world cup for instance.

8.) 20 Jan 2017 08:40:09
There are so many places around the world that if they had the right money available, they could produce some of the best talent we'll ever see.

For example, if The USA pumped the same amount of money into Football, like they do for Hand Egg (American Football) or Basketball, they would be world cup winners in 10-20 years.

Same with China and India. They have enormous pools of talent to choose from, but they lack the coaching and facilities (in some cases) to achieve top level talents. China seem to be changing that now, but I feel they're doing it the wrong way personally.

9.) 19 Jan 2017 23:18:14
If eds 002 ever gets around to writing a biography, I'm pre-ordering and calling in sick for a couple of days.

10.) 19 Jan 2017 23:50:00
"Stuff" eh ed 😉✊️

11.) 19 Jan 2017 23:57:28
Brilliant read Ed, thank you for your insight.

12.) 20 Jan 2017 00:42:21
Stuff ed? Haha
I think I can probably guess what the stuff is.
I was thinking it was the same stuff they have over at the emirates when bidding for strikers. lol

13.) 20 Jan 2017 07:24:29
Sounds like quite an experience then ed

14.) 20 Jan 2017 09:24:29
hsf - the other issue with countries like China and India is massive rural populations living in ways that are a long way from modern. Even if they had top level academy structures to bring through talents, for huge numbers of their population sport barely exists - an FA based even in the regional capital is no more reachable than our FA based in London. I'd like to think that China won't be pumping enough money into that to make it viable while 130m people still live in poverty

15.) 20 Jan 2017 10:38:55
If they decided not to hold it every two years maybe it would seem more prestigious like all the other top competitions at international level. I didn't quite understand why the copa America was held in back to back years either (2015 then 2016).

16.) 20 Jan 2017 13:02:17
The stripper in the bar was Ed 1 who was trying to earn some extra poke during his student travelling days.

Aka the sucked wotsit kid.

17.) 20 Jan 2017 14:19:56
Of course hjikle, obviously the state of the population should take priority.

What I meant regarding China is that they are spending way too much on foreign talent, they should be investing that money into the facilities and maybe bringing in foreign coaches to start the process off. I mean if Chinese clubs can offer some players £30million a year or whatever inflated wages the media are saying, then surely that £30million every year would be better spent on academies and coaches in the long run?

18.) 20 Jan 2017 13:55:10
Coming, phasing out of the AFCON will NEVER happen, period as that competition is the only prestigious international competition Africa has and there is quite a lot of money (by African standards) that the host FA garners from it.

I do believe that as Kman92 says, making it more prestigious and lucrative by making it every 4 years instead of two, would be a plus and could raise the standard. Will this happen? We shall see.

19 Jan 2017 07:31:51
Morning Reds/ Eds great win last night for the young boys, incredibly proud!
Ed002 I have a question if you're around and before you shoot me down for posting this on the Liverpool page its only because I have no idea where else to put it haha. You offer great insight into the administration of our beloved sport.

I'm currently staying in SA and the Keegan Dolly/ Mamelodi Sundowns contract situation is currently a hot topic. I was wondering if you would have any info or would care to share your opinion on how this will be resolved? It seems utterly bizarre from the outside looking in.
Also, has there been any interest in him or Khama Billiat from the European clubs as touted?
Very exciting talents might I add. Wouldn't mind Dolly coming in he'd be a perfect Klopp player and the perfect age.
Cheers

RedSmith

{Ed002's Note - I have asked someone who knows more than I do about this matter and he says that the issue concerns (a) the player wanting to move, (b) the club not being keen at the price, (c) the contract that they have has a "buy out" clause in it which the club say was the result of an error made when drafting the contract, (d) the appeals "chamber" within the Premier League potyentially not being independent and now being in dispute with the player's union over this, and (e) the timing of the appeal in respect of the transfer window. He goes on the say that FIFA has been asked to arbitrate on the basis of the appeals "chamber" not being independent but FIFA would likely not see that in their remit.

He is of the opinion that a further increased bid from Montpellier and a single rather than staged payments would resolve the matter.

I have to say I knew nothing of this aside from Montpellier looking to buy the player as a replacement for Ryad Boudebouz and the fuss caused by the City Group in the summer.

Please keep us informed what happens.}

1.) 19 Jan 2017 13:48:06
I must admit from outside it really seems the player is being unfairly treated and the fact Sundowns has a history or tendency to really make a meal of things when players wish to move on isn't helping either. We all hope the issue gets resolved as the kid is really talented and has given his all to the team. Thanks for info Eds

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome and I would be interested in how it works out.}

2.) 19 Jan 2017 15:21:58
Respect for the random knowledge ed 02! Quick question working on the grand unified theory any advice? Also which church is the correct one to go to?

{Ed002's Note - (a) Yes, let your fish vibrate for several minutes before you try to move it - that was it will settle and acclimatize. (b) With 300 or whatever different deities being worshipped by folks as easily led as Liverpool football fans on Twitter, it is clear that no organised religion makes even the slightest bit of sense for the purpose of adoration or veneration.}

3.) 19 Jan 2017 17:39:04
I personally believe in and follow ed002ism ;)

4.) 20 Jan 2017 07:45:08
Morning Ed002, the feeling is that move should go through from those close to Keegan as things are a said to be a bit "tense" at the moment. From the little time I have known Keegan he is a pro but like most of us our ultimate dream is to be plying our trade on "bigger stage".

5.) 20 Jan 2017 12:35:34
Korne, Nurgle, Tzeentch and Slaanesh are the only true deities.

{Ed001's Note - somebody is a Warhammer fan then.....}

6.) 20 Jan 2017 14:21:31
For the dark Gods!

01 Oct 2016 20:34:20
Ed001 surely you've grown to like Milner mate? Have to admit I wasn't overly thrilled when we signed him but he's a model professional, doing a great job at lb at the moment as well. Can't doubt his effort and commitment. He's an important member of the squad now and his experience of winning things with City will be vital to help these young lads challenge with a cool mature head to lead them along the way.

RedSmith

{Ed001's Note - he has become a very useful member of the side at left back. He is a much better full back than he was a midfielder, credit has to go to Klopp for spotting that.}

1.) 01 Oct 2016 21:12:59
his penalty today was top class, I now expect him to not only take the penalties I expect him to score them as well, credit to klopp ed but also credit to milner for showing the right attitude in accepting his new role, I bet he has received a few bear hugs from klopp as well these past few weeks.

2.) 01 Oct 2016 21:23:46
Couldn't have said it better Kenny.

I have a lot more respect for Milner now. Whereas with Klopp, I always expected him to do well.

3.) 01 Oct 2016 23:50:06
Milner was my man of the match by a country mile.

Karius and crosses is a major worry
What with Zlatan up next.

4.) 02 Oct 2016 03:05:42
I must admit, I wasn't particulary chuft when Milner signed for us, I didn't expect him to bring anything. How wrong was I. None of us like been wrong but in this case I'm delighted I was. He's been a god send in regards to the LB position, he's surprised me and he's a damn good addition to the squad, I thought when it all came out that he'd be playing LB I thought he'd be mediocre at best. but I think half of that was we all wanted to sign a recognised LB lol. yet again, I was wrong. thankfully!

5.) 02 Oct 2016 09:28:46
No doubt credit goes to Big Jurgen every time we show doubt he always shows why we should've believed. But also well done to Milner for taking it well and putting the team first. Long may it continue. Do you think, barring injury of course, there's any chance of Moreno being reintroduced now that the lynch mob is at bay? He's still very young and has time on his side, whether he's willing to learn or not so far remains to be seen.

Eds with that fact in mind, do you see Sakho being an option next year if he makes up with Klopp or has that ship sailed a year ago? Can't help but wonder what he'd have been like with the calming presence of Matip (as well as Milly) beside him in the season just gone
Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - He has not been part of Liverpool's plans for a long time. They are trying to sell him.}

Afternoon ed01 hope you're well mate.
Regarding Hutchison it's always interested me as living here in South Africa he tends to do commentary and punditry for the Premier League a lot. He's always come across as a fella that's stuck up his own arse. Even yesterday in the build up to the weekends action he kept belittling Leroy Rosenoir so much so that the presenter had to ask him why he was acting like that. And his constant defence of Slaven Bilic is getting embarrassing at this stage. Another case of pundits with agendas.

{Ed001's Note - he was not the most likeable of people I have to say. I do find it difficult to like people like him. Ones that have it all but choose to piss it up against a wall rather than making an effort. The type that will skip training for a drinking session and laugh at the fans. Jimmy Bullard is another one. Lee Hendrie was another. Selfish pricks who think the world owes them a living.}
