Ed002, if I may ask, as you seem to have a wealth of information of the finances behind football.

As a first time poster, long time lurker, I would be grateful for a little insight into the financial workings of players' salaries, in general terms, excuse me if any of these are stupid questions, but for instance, with the news of Salah's c. £200k p/ w deal:

Do the players get paid the same every week - i. e. during the off season? I ask because, for example, signing a contract to start now rather than at the start of next season will cost the club north of £500k for Salah to go on holiday! (I appreciate the new salary can start at any date) .

If a player is "paid £200k p/ w" - is that the amount the club actually pays, or are there other add-ons for the club? I presume the agent gets a cut, whether from the player or the club directly.

Similarly, how much does the player see of this £200k? I presume some heavy tax avoidance is in action? On paper, the take home should be around £115k I think.

If a player gets injured, does the club have any insurance to cover his salary over this period?

Are the players "employees" of the club? Does the club have to set up a workplace pension, NI contributions etc?

Thanks!

{Ed002's Note - (a) Players are paid their salary for the full season regardless of whether or not they are playing, injured or on holiday. (b) Some player pay a percentage to their agent. (c) There is no avoidance of tax. (d) Players have insurance but claims are not made unless it is a lengthy injury. (e) Players are employess of clubs and pay tax etc..}

Thanks very much Ed002. Interesting to hear. One follow up if you don't mind, why does the player have insurance if they get paid irrespective of injury? Is that in case the injury extends beyond their current contract, as you say, a lengthy injury, or early retirement.

Thanks again.

{Ed002's Note - The insurance payments are paid to the club, not the player.}

Without knocking our youngsters as I appreciate how hard it must be to get a chance and make the most out of it but let’s be honest not every youngster makes it at top level. If you want to challenge for trophies then you have to better your team at every chance, hopefully there will be a youngster who can do that if not you buy someone who betters your team and in my opinion we have no one as good as the likes of Fekir (I’m using him as an example as he bettersour team) . For me adding quality shows ambition, however if you’ve got a kid who’s banging on the door putting great displays in every week then he deserves his chance, it’s up to them if they take it. Apart from TTA I didn’t see any other youngster put a display good enough to deserve a place.

Alot of people (usually toffs) moan about footballers high wages but I never really thought about the amount of tax they pay.

Things Liverpool need to do to catch up with Real, Barcelona etc:

Win the Premier League, compete for the UCL and PL consistently for the next 5 years+, expand the stadium to 60k+, build the brand, keep hold of and bring in high profile players and keep a high profile manager consistently.

That would be a good start. Still a long way to go!

Bit of Ed25 bashing here! He is right, look at Liverpool's last 2 season's they have shown they are capable of only challenging on 1 front, not 2 or 3. Last season - UCL was the focus. This season - the prem, and they've done very well at different times.

I'd say we have maybe 8 "top" players IMO (Salah, Mane, Bobby, Alisson, VVD, Robbo, Gini + Fabinho) 8 "good" players (Hendo, Gomez, TAA, Keita, Shaqiri, Milner, Ox, Lovren) . The rest are average, very young, or terrible (not naming any names! )

16 top/ good players (when all are fit) does not make a good squad!

The last two years have seen a great improvement, but still a long way to go. Squads are built not bought! (Unless you are City! )

The more I think about it, the less likely I see Fekir happening. Feel like Keita/ Shaqiri/ Mane/ Milner will play as the "10".

My only hope is that the 10 shirt remains free for Fekir!

Shocked to see offer for Alisson, I wondered if that's the money gone for Fekir!

I think it's easy to forget how lucky we are at the moment NOT being involved in transfers. You see Wan-Bissaka going for 50m, Salah etc. valued at 150m+.

Some big transfers last year, all of which have worked out well (bar Keita perhaps) . I think Liverpool are right where they want to be, sitting on an incredible squad, which they could not buy today. Trent + Robbo together at market value would be 150m+, but they've cost 8m combined!

4 starts and 2 sub appearances in 7 games is pretty decent I'd say for a new joiner!

I am personally delighted with the depth and rotation in the midfield so far Milner, Gini, Keita, Hendo and even Shaq all swapping in pretty seamlessly and also raising each others' games. How Fabinho or Lallana fit in is another question!
