Question for eds (if you have the time) and reds.

This season we were a third tier team in the champions league (I think) which seems weird seeing as we made the final.

When will it be decided what tier Liverpool will be in next season? Will winning or not winning the league make a difference, and what other factors are considered?

{Ed002's Note - Winning league or CL will be pot 1 - else pot 2 or 3 depending on ranking and who else qualifies.}

1.) 05 Feb 2019 07:30:57
The pot you go in is based on European performance over the last 5 years I believe? But if you win the league or champions league you automatically go in pot 1. We were on the cusp of pot 2/ 3 this year so at a guess I think if we beat Bayern that will probably bump us up into pot 2 but a lot has to do with who qualifies.

No word of a lie, I saw timo werner near wlva rd. In a grey mazzarati. God knows why. Reckon he will be a liverpool player next year.

1.) 02 Feb 2019 20:40:09
Or Everton?

2.) 02 Feb 2019 20:43:47
Think he was supposed to go to Blackpool.

3.) 03 Feb 2019 10:29:48
Timo was in a grey Walter Mazzarri? Got nothing against it, but I didn’t know Walter had gone grey already. But if he is signing, then it’s good to know he’s enjoying the sights and attractions of Liverpool already. 👍.

4.) 03 Feb 2019 18:50:01
‘God knows why’ 😂😂.

Hi ed02 (or anyone, eds or reds)

Do we still have interest in the young full back from Bristol City?

{Ed002's Note - There is nothing new.}

1.) 10 Jan 2019 10:13:36
i very much doubt they would sell him mid season! potentially one for the summer but i imagine most big clubs would be looking at him, having a very good season!

2.) 10 Jan 2019 10:18:17
Lloyd Kelly could be a very smart purchase, he’s a big, quick, mobile, a good defender and a good footballer (he dominates players who are a lot older than him) . He can also cover left back comfortably as well as centre back. To my mind he looks like he has the ability to step up, the same way Rob Jones did.

3.) 10 Jan 2019 10:41:52
Id take another rob jones alright!

Just read an article about Alisson Becker.

Conceded less goals than anyone in europe, premier league and copa america. I have to say, and it might sound a bit sycophantic, but ed01 said last summer that our most important signing would be Alisson. Just goes to show, the eds know their football.

Karius or migs would not have made that save from Erikson's free kick, but Becker made it look easy. And we would've been out had he not made that unbelievable save against Napoli.

Sure he has the best CB in front of him and two high class, if not world class FBs, (Robbo 8mil! ) but he has to stay switched on, playing for a team that doesn't concede many shots.

Without doubt, he's the best GK on the planet, and 55mil now seems a bargain. 2/ 3 seasons ago we had one WC player, we all agreed, and that was pipco (he was way better in a blood red shirt than he is in a blue and purple one) But now we have at least 7/ 8 WC players. What a fantastic recruitment team we have. But more importantly we have the best.

1.) 05 Jul 2019 05:55:13
Love Liverpool, love Allisson, and I love your enthusiasm Robbie, but there's a reason why Liverpool supporters get criticised for hyperbole and wearing red-tinted specs.
There certainly is doubt whether he is the best keeper on the planet. Personally, i wouldn't swap him for anyone but one bad season doesn't write off DDG and you can't ignore the likes of Oblak and Neuer. Allisson was superb at Roma and very good for us last season but you won't find a global consensus that he's the best until he's had a few phenomenal seasons.
Not sure who the 7/ 8 world class players are either. Id say VVD, Mane and Salah are arguably close to that description but who else could be termed as World Class?
Dont mean to piss on your fire btw, just think some of your statements are a tad over-hyped.

2.) 05 Jul 2019 06:07:36
I would define World Class as being in the top 5 in the world in that position.
Name me 5 better right backs than Trent Alexander Arnold.
Name me 5 better left backs than Andy Robertson.
Name me 5 better goalkeepers than Alisson.
We shouldnt be afraid to big up our own players when its warranted.

3.) 05 Jul 2019 06:17:28
@Like a Virgil: DDG has been poor ever since the World Cup, and sure, I'd still consider him a top 5 (top 3 even) keeper, but when compared to Alisson's superb campaign, it pales in comparison. As to Manuel Neuer, his performance levels have completely dropped off ever since he started accumulating injuries. I think at one point this season, he had the lowest save percentage out of all the keepers in the Bundesliga. I don't think he can even be considered as better than Ter Stegen at this point.

4.) 05 Jul 2019 06:50:51
Thats just your definition, Thunderbird.
Others would suggest World Class would mean the best 11 players in their position in the world or someone who is transparently better than other players regardless of position (ie. Messi, Ronaldo, etc) . Its a subjective thing.
Trent and Robbo are the best fullbacks we've had in years but both had poor spells last season and i doubt either would get in anyones worlds best players list outside of the UK.
Classic case of blowing things out of proportion, in my opinion.

{Ed025's Note - as per normal virgil..

5.) 05 Jul 2019 08:35:19
well said robbie.

6.) 05 Jul 2019 08:46:08
I tend to agree about the hyperbole surrounding our players and it's not surprising considering the season we have just had. Alisson without doubt had a wonderful season but he has more to prove for me.

It is a testament to how well all the cogs fit together masterfully by klopp that we have such a good team. The emphasis being on team, the sum of the parts make the whole so much better. Individually not all our players are the best in their positions, but the team brings the best out of them and it adds up to a fantastic team.

Hyperbole aside, we are not there yet for me, the bar has been set very high by Man City and us, but I believe it can be set even higher and the players we have, has the potential to do that, even without additions.

7.) 05 Jul 2019 10:03:34
Virgil that's wet talk. World class is completely different to "best in the world".

So by your logic only 1 of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic were world class? They can't all have been the best.

World class has to be a selection. Top 3, 5, 10 whatever. However you wish to quantify it subjectively. But being the absolute best at what you do? That cannot be the only criteria for world class and to even suggest it is absolutely absurd and the most over the top statement I've ever read on these pages.

Go tell Thiery Henry he wasn't world class because Brazilian Ronaldo was better, and watch the look on his face.

8.) 05 Jul 2019 11:06:10
Maybe you need to re-read my post, Plain Bread. My point was that the term world class is subjective and so there are different criteria for claiming a player is WC.
The OP suggested we have 7/ 8 world class players in the team. I would guess that anyone who was not a LFC fan would pick one, maybe two at the most, who were world class. Personally, I would say Salah and Mane are close. Becker and VVD have had superb seasons but need a few more to be classed as WC. Trent and Robbo have been very solid but a little inconsistent and i've no idea who else in the team is supposedly on par with Messi, Ronaldo, etc, according to the OP.

9.) 05 Jul 2019 11:55:09
Your right LAV we have 1 world class player VVD as he is so much better than other cb's around. Mane and Salah getting somewhere near. Allison needs to maintain his current level next season.

Trent and Robbo just need to keep progressing.

We have maybe only had 8-10 world class players in the past 50 years never mind all in the team now. In the whole premier league there might be 2 or 3 world class players.

Then its a struggle.

10.) 05 Jul 2019 12:59:35
What a weird argument, with no one taking team composition and tactics into concideration. Under Klopp Alisson, VVD, TAA, Robbo, Mane, Mo and Bobby play at an absolute world class level. Would they in a Sarri team? Conte? Mourinho?

To illustrate furtgerher: Pogba was absolute world class at Juventus, under that coach and with those teammates. Not so much after his transfer to Manutd, ey?

{Ed001's Note - Pogba was never world class at Juve, he was the same as he is at United, it is just most people only saw the highlight reels. He is and always will be a highlight reel hero but 90min waste of space.}

11.) 05 Jul 2019 14:07:01
I'd still say he was one of the absolute top midfielders in the world playing in a league where teams generally play at a slower tempo, in a team who owns the ball most of the time, where the manager had him and his ego figured out and two other central mids to do the stuff he is not that good at, and teammates with higher status to help keep his ego in check. If Chiellini or Buffon said "Run" 3-4 years ago you'd better run to put it simply.

He was brought in to be top dog for the mancs, in a relatively low profile squad, and a manager with absolutely no social skills. Not the right circumstances, hence not worldclass anymore.

Well that's my analysis anyway. World class is a context thing as much as individual ability.

12.) 05 Jul 2019 21:07:30
i think its slightly naieve to say so and so couldn't make this or that save. Goal Keepers all over the world can replicate saves that other GKs make. like, I seriously think can make the saves Allison did.
But to me the difference maker is more about other areas of their game like catching instead of punch, minimizing minor errors, ability with feet etc.

29 Jun 2019 12:35:52
Where does carragher rate as one of liverpools best (European cup winning) cbs? He must be top 10, right? They don't have to have won the ucl, for the sake of argument.

I dunno, i don't really remember much before 85.

Be interested to hear your thoughts. Agger would be in my top 10 also. Is there a shout for henchoz?

1.) 29 Jun 2019 12:58:24
I dont think carra was on hansens level nor vvd really, he just had so much heart and desire to not concede goals.

2.) 29 Jun 2019 13:23:42
Personally I don't think Carragher was that good. He wasnt that commanding, wasnt very fast and couldn't pass that well. He had determination and he was vocal but that was it for me, oh and he came from Liverpool. Distinctly average for me.

3.) 29 Jun 2019 13:33:24
Top 10 yes but he wasn't who I'd say was an incredible defender, he was good but that's as far as I'll go personally.

4.) 29 Jun 2019 13:40:19
I know what you mean firmane. Born defender. He isn't on Hansen level, of course. Not many ever have been have they.
He played loads of games as a rb and a lb. I think 2005/ 2006/ 2007 were his best years. He is undoubtedly a liverpool legend. Must be top 10. Is he top 5.

5.) 29 Jun 2019 13:53:42
Irish, thats pushing it. Carragher wasnt the defensive titan that he can be made out to be by some, but he was certainly better than average.
Heart and courage goes much further as a defender than it does in other positions, and whilst he wasnt as quick as Gomez by any stretch I can think of a hundred defenders slower than Carragher without too much effort.
That said, he was nowhere near VVD or Hyypia as an overall defender.

6.) 29 Jun 2019 15:23:21
Mark Lawrensen. Ron Yeats.

7.) 29 Jun 2019 15:43:03
Thompson would be above him in that list, did lawrenson win it too?

{Ed001's Note - Tommy Smith was everything Carra was but better at it. He has to be in there too.}

8.) 29 Jun 2019 16:08:22
Of course ed, I forgot hed won it!

9.) 29 Jun 2019 17:47:08
Tommy Smith. Of course, forgot.

And yeah, a bit harsh irish. He was a good passer of the ball and a brilliant tackler. Was hard to get past in his prime.

10.) 29 Jun 2019 18:01:31
I'd say he'd just barely make the top 10 as a cb.

11.) 29 Jun 2019 18:31:17
Spot on, LoweLFC, Carra only made it due to sheer will and heart and a refusal to be denied a career as a footballer. He himself said that he had to play all both fullback positions just to get into the team even tho his real position was at CB (cos he was simply not better than Hyppia and Henchoz, period) .

Carra was a very good defender who played for the shirt and was a very brave on the pitch who led the team well for the most part BUT let's be clear, he is NOWHERE near the level in terms of ability, skill and talent of those CB's the OP mentioned. not in the least, IMO.

12.) 30 Jun 2019 06:17:07
Smith, Hughes Hansen Thompson Lawrenson Hypia Carragher Vvd and Matip, were your choices That's 9 so Carragher Definitely makes top 10. Carragher only ahead of Matip for me. Smith would have eaten a team of Carraghers.

13.) 30 Jun 2019 08:30:21
Carragher played in the robbie William's charity match a few weeks ago and completely bossed the fastest man in the world Usain bolt. Yes he is not the most skillful, but his never say die attitude is what made him special.

{Ed025's Note - i must say i was a big fan of his....then the spitting incident happened and i lost all respect for him..

14.) 30 Jun 2019 08:57:21
What about Larry Lloyd who partnered Tommy Smith, Ron Yeats too. Gary Gillespie and the late Gary Ablett. For me these players had more to their game than Carragher. Just my opinion of course, not gospel.

15.) 30 Jun 2019 12:06:42
Who put matip in the top 10? He had a good second half of the season and he started his lfc careeer quite well. But he is nowhere near the top 10, there is time but i don't see it.

Phil Thompson is a great shout, can't believe i forgot him.

16.) 30 Jun 2019 13:49:51
Anyone reckon gomez has a chance of making that top 10? I think a definite yes if he can put his injuries behind him and play a few solid seasons.

Cant remember being as excited by a young cb for a long time.

17.) 30 Jun 2019 14:36:30
Carra did also get beat by usain bolt mind, bad reading of a bounce!

18.) 30 Jun 2019 17:32:18
Spot on, Ed25. That spitting incident from Carra was reprehensible and the only thing more reprehensible than his conduct, was the conduct of the ones who actually had the audacity to actually defend him.

19.) 30 Jun 2019 22:52:29
I seriously can't believe you guys forgot Daniel Agger.

29 Jun 2019 12:03:22
Anyone getting really bored of no football? I medically miss football focus. The midday kick off. The big game at 3.

I cannot wait to see the boys run out as European champions. Putting the fear into EVERY team in the premier league.

1.) 29 Jun 2019 12:55:13
The thought that just came to my mind is no football and no Liverpool rumors website for you. That's when I think you'll really require "medically" attention. Hahahaha (you're easily the most frequent poster on here) .

2.) 29 Jun 2019 13:37:56
The big game at 3 is a contradictory of terms. Youll be on permanent medication waiting for a big game with a kick off at 3pm!

3.) 29 Jun 2019 13:34:52
Lol I hate this no football business, I can't wait until the league starts again but it's dragging big time.

4.) 29 Jun 2019 13:42:24
Am i? I bet im not. Great site.

5.) 29 Jun 2019 18:02:57
The easiest way to find out Robbie, is to find a thread where you haven't posted or replied, LOL.

6.) 29 Jun 2019 21:11:26
You should watch the womens World Cup.
Cracking match last night, France v USA.

7.) 29 Jun 2019 23:07:02
The Copa America is on at the minute plus the women's world cup.

8.) 30 Jun 2019 12:08:07
I know this sounds selfish but im only interested in liverpool and our rivals.

28 Jun 2019 12:03:30
Regret that choice already. Is there a shout for dropping fabhino? No there isn't is there really?

Henderson Fabhino Milner.

1.) 28 Jun 2019 15:31:30
Can someone kindly decipher this?

2.) 28 Jun 2019 16:23:28
Was probaby meant to be for another thread.

3.) 28 Jun 2019 18:28:07
Found it!

Currently at the top of the 'Match Posts' page.

Just call me Sherlock ;-)

Actually, DO call me Sherlock as its actually my name :)

4.) 28 Jun 2019 18:56:19
As the saying goes Zed, "no sh*t, Sherlock! ".

5.) 29 Jun 2019 00:31:14

Are you Harry in disguise? Or Salaoe?

6.) 29 Jun 2019 12:25:18
Basically the question was; Who make up our best midfield? Say its city at anfield. Who would you start if all players were fit?

Hendo fabhino Gini.

It changes every time i try to choose. Milner and Aoc have to be considered.

I hope a deal happens for the 2 Southampton players. Seem just what we need atm.

1.) 18 Jun 2019 14:06:55
I would be surprised if we payed any fee for our number 2, we have an amazing number 1 who will rarely not play. As well as 2 young prospects.

Dembeles unvieling said it all i think. The kid couldn't even do one keep up when they announced him. He looked like the kid in the playground who couldn't kick a ball. i've rarely seen a pro footballer (even semi pro) who couldn't dazzle me with keep ups and tricks. I don't doubt dembele could. But he has so much pressure on him and was sold too soon. A kid thrown into the snakepit that is the Barcelona dressing room.

They, and he, would've been better off had they not signed him. There is a message there if you have the wit to see it.

I believe him when he says that. He was a red for years. We developed him into one of the best players in the world. It has been said that he regrets leaving Liverpool and i believe that too.

It won't be the only motivation behind him snubbing utd, much more likely is the state that utd are in right now. But i believe that liverpool are part of the reason.

Dodgy theory: coutinio, through his agent, generates interest in a utd move. Snubs them at the last minute because he still has love for liverpool. Paving the way for pipco's return.

Already said it but i reckon dembele would be a Sturridge replacement. As salah is not leaving this year. And there was interest last year when Salah certainly wasn't leaving. And they play on opposite sides of the pitch.

18 Jun 2019 12:29:34
Lol ed02. But again he plays on the opposite side to salah, same with sane. Dembele was looked at last year i remember, or there was a lot of talk. Macca predicted we'd sign him.

I think to call the lad "not all that" is way way off the mark. He's a fine footballer and i think he'd be brilliant in the premier league. A club like liverpool and a boss like klopp is just what the lad needs. Too young to write him off. Some are debating whether wilson should get a shot and the two lads are pretty close in age. Only one has played for dortmund and Barcelona the other has played for derby.

If we can sign him we should. I would see him more of a Danny Sturridge replacement than a Salah one. DS came to us as a forward/ winger who scored goals.

{Ed001's Note - the lad is an idiot of Neymar proportions though. Steer clear please.}

I agree lerchy, that they sound like good deals. Homegrown too.

They may seem underwhelming to some but so did Andy Robertson and Aoc. If klopp and the team have identified them as good targets then i trust in them completely.

Eds, could some deal with Danny Ings be involved?

{Ed001's Note - the Ings deal is done.}

Id rather be spat at than punched. Look, its not very nice but there's only so much abuse a man can take. Footballers live a privileged life but they take a lot of rubbish for just playing a game. Im not defending jamie for it, i just don't think it defines the man, that he spat at someone. I think hed make a great coach, but if he's making money without the stress then good for him. I quite like him and neville on sky, like the banter.

Gini - possibly our most underrated player. Absolutely love him. If he seems to be having a quiet game you can be sure 2 opposition players are also being kept quiet. But unlike many midfielders who break up play, when he gets forward you always feel like something can happen.

Like all reds i was deeply in love with gerrard. But you have to be careful with sentiment when making big decisions. If we were a team aiming to finish 4th, europa league team i would be happy to give stevie the job. But as it stands (and things change) he hasn't proved himself to be one of the outstanding young managers in the game. I do think he'll get there and i would like him to manage us. If i had to choose now, i would pick poch from spurs. I think he's a great manager.
