Hi Eds,

Trivial question, but something I'm sure you are able to explain. Whilst all public conversations talk about how much players earn per week, do footballers generally get paid per week? or is it per month like many other occupations today? or something differently entirely?

Thanks.

SMR

{Ed002's Note - Actually a good question. At one time players were only paid during the season and not in the summer, and for some smaller clubs that is still true. For most, but not all, sides the wages are now paid monthly over the year but you don’t need to go too far back to find weekly wages being paid.}

1.) 22 Jan 2018 19:29:50
Insightful as ever Ed002,
gracias.

{Ed002's Note - Think back also to when football players had summer jobs - playing county cricket, bus conductor etc.}

2.) 22 Jan 2018 20:01:45
On that point; do they pay tax like a paye employee or do they have their own international companies who get the cash and help minimise tax?

{Ed002's Note - After “expenses” they pay tax. Remind me in a day or two about some of the approaches taken in the past, and I will tell (nearly) all.}

3.) 22 Jan 2018 20:23:57
I always wondered if players got as excited as us normal folk when the open up their payslips each week/ month.
“Ooooh! They paid me for 10 goals instead of the 9 I actually scored! Ssssh. ”.

4.) 22 Jan 2018 21:12:32
Really good question. I'm sure its been monthly for at least 10 years if not more? I remember when Riise's payslip was photographed and published a few years back, showing a monthly net amount. Even then was pretty decent, albeit not in the league of a Rodeo Clown ;)

5.) 22 Jan 2018 21:13:35
Are they employees of the club or self employed? And what ever the answer is is the case for all teams?

Thanks for your reply :)

{Ed002's Note - employees.}

6.) 22 Jan 2018 22:00:39
Thanks.

I'm glad we won at the weekend, but one thing that puzzles - annoys me even - is the decision to play Wijnaldum and Can in a makeshift back three.

What I mean is not the actual decision, but the principle of it. Do we not have centrebacks in the academy who could have played instead? Why do managers increasingly play players way out of position rather than play a youngster natural to the role? It's understandable youngsters might not always be first-team ready but if that isn't a time to play them will they ever get a game any other time?

SMR

1.) 05 Dec 2017 18:56:21
Playing an inexperienced youngster could be high risk I suppose, in many ways?

2.) 05 Dec 2017 18:56:56
Totally agree SMR, especially concerning was shoehorning Wiji into the centre back role. he looked so uncomfortable.

I get your point about using our academy, but i believe a simple chance of tactics would have sorted the problem. a flat back four with Can at CB and push Wiji into 3 man midfield and leave the same 3 up front.

Seems stupid to be pointing out problems after a 5-1 away win! I should probably just shut up!

Hopefully Gomez is back fit for tomorrow night and will get his start at CB. Top of the group would be great!

3.) 05 Dec 2017 19:06:42
Thing is that maybe our young defenders aren’t good enough to play at the highest level, can you honestly say any of them are as good as Christensen at Chelsea for example? Was a gamble by Klopp but it paid off.

4.) 05 Dec 2017 19:49:21
I said on the day that if you're playing Wijnaldum, a player who started as a no.10 / winger and is now a center mid, as a center back, surely it's at the point where trying Jones or Masterson is no riskier an option?

But I suppose only Klopp and the coaching staff know what they're like in training. Maybe their quite obviously some way away from being able to handle senior football.

5.) 05 Dec 2017 20:39:27
Yeah but we won 1-5.

6.) 05 Dec 2017 21:54:55
We did but surely to god playing masterson or jones would be less of a risk than gini, even conor randall in a back 3 (if he is still around), not an 'experiment' we'll be repeating again i hope.

7.) 05 Dec 2017 22:23:20
I think although we overall did good display at Brighton, the fact we had Lovren as only recognised centre half shows that we must invest January, Penny for Klavans thoughts though, he knows situation regarding his playing time and pecking order but seeing Gini and Emre playing his position while Matip and Gomez out must be tough tough pill to swallow!

8.) 05 Dec 2017 23:01:45
I thought that Can had a very good game at the back, and being able to bring the ball out and play a decent pass worked out well, I don't really want him to leave our great club .

9.) 05 Dec 2017 23:30:21
Conor Randall is out on loan and I read Klavan had been in bed ill for 5 or 6 days. It was makeshift but we got a 5-1 result.

10.) 06 Dec 2017 10:20:00
Gomez and Klavan did not play due to illness. nothing to do with pecking order.

Ed's,

I wanted to ask what you thought of our seeming lack of secondary targets?

I know we signed Robertson and Salah who themselves weren't first choices, but with Keita and Van Dijk it seems there are few alternatives we are even considering?

On the one hand is it admirable that we are determined to land our key targets? On the other does it not look like a poor handling of the situation as there are surely alternatives that could be found with proper scouting?

I mean I've read how Monchi aims to have 10 targets for each position at all times, so that Sevilla (and now Roma) could replace players with much more ease.

Thanks,

SMR

{Ed002's Note - Klopp was confident that his tactics would land him all four. Two have not happened and two are still with their clubs. Perhaps he will continue to expect them both to join. Liverpool had identified other midfield players but they were set aside in favour of Keita. Aside from a youngster and a low bid for KK, Liverpool has not made efforts for another centre back at this time and, as I have explained, perhaps something can yet be done with van Dijk.}

1.) 16 Aug 2017 09:29:52
Sorry probably me having a moment but who is OK?

{Ed002's Note - Kalidou Koulibaly.}

2.) 16 Aug 2017 10:16:14
For a second I thought King Kenny was comung back.

3.) 16 Aug 2017 10:59:07
Ed02, Van Dijk is what probably everyone would want. Easy to see why he's especially been singled out. He'd arguably be the most important signing in years as he'd address an area of major weakness and is tailor-made for Klopp's football.
I can also see a scenario where he becomes captain from the medium term.

That said, is it fair to say this transfer has been rather unlikely now, given the ealier events in the wimdow?
Even if Southampton were willing to deal with Liverpool, things will hinge on FSG. They'd have to backtrack and withdraw their apology.
And given the already muddied reputation of the club, I cannot see the owners doing that.

Am sure they'd know how crucial getting Van Dijk would be for Klopp, but they could see the reputational damaged to outweigh whatever success may be derived from Van Dijk's arrival.

The sad, very sad fact is that Liverpool probably could have done a deal by now for Van Dijk, but Klopp messed it up royally.
Whether the public apology and withdrawal of interest was the smart thing to do may be debatable.
What's not debatable is that, that apology has created a difficult situation for the club IF it stil wishes to sign the player.

Southampton may well be open to selling to us; Van Dijk could want the move; LFC could afford the fee, but would FSG backtrack? Should they backtrack? On principle, no they shouldn't. Stick to their position and avoid further muddying image of the club.

But they do that and there be a backlash from the "fans". Story will be that FSG didn't want to back Klopp and buy VVD. It will be the owners' fault if team fails this season. The hate and bile will go on and on.
And the real culprits, which IS Klopo and the other clowns at the club, would of gotten away scot free.
Klopp will now be the unfortunate victim.

So in your view Ed02, what would be the "best" way to resolve the Van Dijk issue, from the point of view of especially Liverpool and Southampton?
Should Saints sell him? Should they deal with LFC at all, or refuse, even if LFC possibly offers the most amount? Should Liverpool just move on from VVD? If Klopp makes his feelings known to FSG how critical he sees Van Dijk play purchase, should the owners back down and approve the transfer? Or should they stand firm on their apology and withdrawal of interest?

I'd really appreciate your views on this Ed02. Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - This has been covered over and over and over. Move on.}

Eds,

Thoms Lemar and Hakim Ziyech

1) What would your thoughts be on either of them as a replacement for Coutinho?

2) Do you think either of them will move clubs this window, particularly Lemar? Having listened to Sharkopod I know that Ed002 has spoken of Arsenal's interest without them managing to agree a fee.

Appreciate the work you do on here,
Thanks.

SMR

{Ed001's Note - 1) Not seen enough of either. What I did see of Lemar was extremely disappointing but it was just a couple of Champions League games.

2) Lemar looks likely to stay now. No idea about Ziyech.}

1.) 14 Aug 2017 14:09:55
Left sided winger would not replace a playmaker who was excepted to be a part of 3 men midfield supplying arms and ammunitions to the front three!
They are completely different to what Phil offers and would bring to the team! TBH, I have seen none who would come in and slot in that midfield.
I can mention a few players the club should have looked at.
1. Insinge
2. Coric
3. Kovacic ( central playmaker, also an alternative to Kieta )
4. Pjnaic ( More like a CM but the Playnaker at Juventus )

Coutinho is a lot more than just a player, he is more of a difficult puzzle you would finish all your life solving it. It's hard as he cements a free role a multiple position inside the same game which makes him one of the most unique players across.
You don't tie phil to a specific position. Hence a left sided winger would never replace Coutinho.
He is a mix of Fabrigas ( with his passing ), KDB ( with his movement and dribbling ability ) .

2.) 14 Aug 2017 14:27:26
Ziyech is a number 10 in every sense he is on the left for Ajax but he is a playmaker supreme . In fact if we can get him in you will have great set pieces and he can see a pass like the tip players. Only issue is his attitude until he sorts that out he won't go up the level his ability deserves. Lemar decent player but coutinho is irreplaceable and we will have to just get a midfielder who will complement our defence as we not short of creative players .

3.) 14 Aug 2017 14:35:04
david silva is more ideal then any player above. but realistical? dunno.

4.) 14 Aug 2017 14:46:48
"We Can't defend" do you mean Miralem Pjanic? Solid player. and has an awesome shot from a ways out. Could step in and take free kicks.

5.) 14 Aug 2017 15:05:07
@Lock

Yes but again he is not a like to like replacement for Coutinho. But he is a playmaker who will help us to unlock tight defense, scores freekick and is a good tackler too.
You can add Mata into the list as well. Out of favor at UTD!

6.) 14 Aug 2017 15:13:01
You know what Morrocan Red, they said that Mane had an attitude problem, but they were wrong, they said that Sturridge had an attitude problem but he is in fact one of the nicest blokes you'd ever want to meet, they said that Salah had an attitude and they are wrong. Personally, if Ziyech can fulfil his outrageous talent and potential then I would be happy to take a punt. Personally I think Insigne is the man for the job but that is just my opinion.

7.) 14 Aug 2017 15:15:52
Don't mean to be nasty but everyone is going on about replacing PC. We just scored 3 away goals. Creating and scoring aren't the problem. Get the defence and a good defensive midfielder sorted whether PC goes or not.

8.) 14 Aug 2017 15:35:04
belfrasted

thats was mainly cause of the skills of the front 3 and can. They are almost identical players can, wini, hendo. no creativity what so ever, most one dimentional midfield i've seen in a long time.

14 Aug 2017 13:13:18
Would anyone be able to tell me/ evaluate how good Naby Keita's passing is?

I'm asking in the sense that whilst someone like Keita will add further energy and mobility to our midfield, without Coutinho on the pitch we always seem to lack the ability to play that incisive pass in my opinion. Even though we scored 3 goals against Watford for example, We seem so much more lethargic and unable to open up defences without him. Only Henderson in that midfield 3 seems really capable of playing that killer pass.

I'm worried that we'll struggle massively going forward.

SMR

1.) 14 Aug 2017 13:44:14
From what I've seen of him he's a very good passer of the ball, especially hitting balls accurately and quickly to pacey wingers on either side from deep, he would be perfect for our system when salah and mane are playing.
He's a different player to coutinho but could be just as effective or more playing for us.
I think bringing him in would likely mean someone else being pushed out, Can maybe?

2.) 14 Aug 2017 15:23:18
I read somewhere that he is considered to be the most attacking passer in German football. That he takes out more defenders with passes than the rest of that league. They have a term in German football for it but it has escaped me now sorry. We really need to move on though from this player, RBL have said they don't want to sell this season, we need to respect that or damage another club to club relationship I feel. We'll have no one left willing to do business with us if we continue like we are.

Just curious as to what would make Ceballos much more capable?

Meyer has been playing far deeper under Schalke's new boss, almost as a regista, which will undoubtedly have had an impact. He has considerably more experience than Ceballos.

Insigne without a doubt. Whilst both are versatile players, Insigne has played various roles in a more consistent manner; in the last two seasons he has become far more influential and clinical in what is a very good Napoli side.

Beyond that, Insigne has played at a higher level, and I don't think that it should be underestimated how pressurising Italian fans can be in general and how much is expected of him as a local player too.

I think what Lanzini has in his favour is that he's been in England for a couple of years now so he knows the league, and he's also used to the physicality of it. Bear in mind that Insigne is only 5ft 5ish.

Thats my two cents anyway.

Thanks Ed, I look forward to it if you do manage to get round to producing something on it! I understand it's not as simple as one method or the other. Fascinating nonetheless though.

SMR

{Ed001's Note - it will do it, just take a bit of research, as I don't want to misrepresent it, so I will have to chase up a lot of people to get different viewpoints. I did have some Klopp training drills on a pdf somewhere but I can't find it or I would put them up for you.}
