Hi Eds, I have heard rumours of Yevhen Konoplyanka being available for as low a 5 million pounds, how true is it and if so is Liverpool still showing interest in him, cheers.

felmil GH

{Ed002's Note - There is interest from elsewhere, but Liverpool did their shopping in the summer and decided to look elsewhere to Konoplyanka.}

Just saw on another media outlet that Caicedo has followed Chelsea on Twitter, how true?

felmil GH

1.) 11 Aug 2023 19:06:15
It’s false, he’s followed them for months apparently.

2.) 11 Aug 2023 19:07:27
It was weeks ago. Just the spin machine working over time.

3.) 11 Aug 2023 19:35:39
He’s also a Man U fan kid can’t make up his mind.

4.) 11 Aug 2023 21:11:57
And his dream club was Real Madrid right before he went on strike to force a move to Arsenal, by all accounts.

{Ed025's Note - would any self respecting Liverpool fan want him now Oli?, if i was in your shoes i wouldn,t mate..

Generally, I think it's a common theme with the Liverpool defence this season and before not wanting to throw themselves in the way of shots and when I see other defenders from other teams do it I just ask myself if that's how our defenders are coached? and how they usually turn their backside to opposing attackers.

I think the problem is we tend to look for ball playing defenders and as a result most of our defenders probably came through the system as midfielders or thinking they were above getting muddy.

Robbo, Phillips, Tsimikas and Konate are the only defenders we have who will throw themselves at a shot. And Milner is the only midfielder. All players who aren't the best technically and what they do have technically they have had to work really hard at (Robbo, Tsimikas and Milner for example take good set pieces which is probably hard work in training shining through) .

We ideally need a centre back to play with Konate who has had to graft his way to the top rather than someone like Virgil who could coast to the top because he's so fast, so tall and so good with the ball. Nat Phillips, but with pace.

2.) 02 Jun 2023 10:57:25
Anybody who thinks professional footballers coast their way to the top of the game is way off beam. The game is littered with famous names who had plenty of talent but lacked that desire to push themselves.
The guys at the top are there because they put the hard yards in, just because they lack in one area (all players will lack something) doesn't mean they strolled around at their leisure.
Guys at Van Dijk's level make it look easy.

3.) 02 Jun 2023 13:15:11
I think Klopp or Ljinders talked about it once last season. It's a DELIBERATE ploy by us, because in a lot of cases it was causing deflections which Ali could do nothing about. And when you have someone as good as him, it's better to take your chances.

4.) 02 Jun 2023 11:47:41
Maybe coast is the wrong word Flash but it is undeniable that some players with less natural ability have to work significantly harder and give that little bit extra on the pitch to match the levels of some players who were just blessed with better physicality or technique. I think we need to have a few more players like that in the team. Or even players like Mane or Diaz who weren't pampered in top tier academies from a young age and don't mind putting throwing themselves at a challenge.

You're probably correct that coast is the wrong word though. It does take a lot of dedication to get to the top for almost every player. Some just have to work harder on and off the pitch. Milner and Robbo are perfect examples. They have strained all the sinews in their bodies to play at this level.

5.) 02 Jun 2023 12:04:30
We've been so dominant in possession and so good in pressure off the ball in previous seasons that the sheer quantity of defending required in the basketball games we have served up this past season has come as a shock to everyone. Let's be honest, if it were not for Alisson, we'd have finished in the bottom half of the table.

Hopefully we improve next season, whether that is being more prepared to defend more often, or regaining control of games. Ideally both.

Virgil (and Trent, Robbo, Ibou) will be better when not seeing every turnover of possession end up in goalscoring chance.

6.) 02 Jun 2023 15:20:18
Thekoparmy, you could be right. I remember Gary Neville once telling a story of how Peter Schmeichel used to literally tell the defenders to essentially either get out of the way of shots or not try to get in their way to block them so he could see them coming and in his view, have a better chance of saving them. Why? Cos he hated conceding deflected goals cos he had no control over them. Maybe that's what is happening here.

I don't think young players get pampered in top tier academies either. Sure they have access to better amenities and coaching staff, but they still have to push themselves to the limit to give themselves a better chance of being selected ahead of their academy brethren.
I was lucky enough to grow up just a couple of hundred yards away from 2 guys my age who made it to the top flight (one who played in the famous Forest thrashing), and one was way more talented than the other. But all of us guys who grew up with them saw and heard of the sacrifices they made and the sheer bloody minded effort they put in to get to that level. And to this day they get huge respect for doing so, they earned their current lifestyle.
Talent goes nowhere without blood, sweat and tears and plenty of hard yards and knocks. All physical or combative sports are the same in that respect.

10.) 02 Jun 2023 22:30:34
I thought everyone who waltzed into a top tier academy was absolutely guaranteed to go on and play 200 plus games in the PL and make millions?

11.) 02 Jun 2023 23:36:31
Especially the ones that stroll round the pitch with G&T in hand and a large Cuban cigar.
Did I just describe Naby Keita?

12.) 03 Jun 2023 13:42:51
Fash persnoally, I thought you were describing Thielemans.

13.) 03 Jun 2023 14:22:34
Could be Maddison too Oli, is it a Leicester thing?

Harry Wilson scores again for Hull City, this lady really knows his stuff, the back of the net.

Another really well taken goal! I hope he gets his place as regular backup next season as we will regret if we let him go.

2.) 14 Mar 2018 04:42:01
Does Wilson become ‘Harriet’ on friday evenings, felmil?

Hello, family this is a sad news I am sharing as I lost a very good friend and die hard Liverpool fan on Sunday, he was eager to watch yesterdays game but couldn't make it through Sunday as he was knocked by a car. RIP Kofi (Afriki), thoughts are with bro.

I have not seen this come up but I think Sturridge was too selfish leading the second goal, choosing to hold onto the ball and dribble his way through, than placing a pass to Firmino who would have been one on one with the keeper. That really made me mad as it lead to the second goal.

felmil GH

1.) 25 Apr 2016 09:19:38
Yes I noted that too. Strikers are entitled to be selfish every now and again but that was quite obviously a poor decision.

I'm not convinced Sturridge and Firmino have each other figured out just yet. Both somehow look better sitting next to Origi than each other. Having said that, they are quite similar in terms of runs and ability to drop deep and link play so once they hopefully figure out how to not trip over each other, I think they'll be excellent together.

2.) 25 Apr 2016 09:40:35
I prefer origi up top all day long. Sturridge is just goals that's it, his team play is shocking, holds onto the ball too long.

3.) 25 Apr 2016 10:33:51
Bit harsh to say he only offers goals. His link up play is brilliant. He is a little greedy. So what? If he wasn't he probably would've tried laying the ball off instead of scoring his goal against Newcastle. Every striker needs that element of selfishness. Sheer desire to score.

My problem is his work rate and his fitness. He doesn't press enough and he's always getting injured. Still think he is our best striker when he is playing. If Klopp can keep him fit, he is deadly.

4.) 25 Apr 2016 10:39:27
Sturridge is an incredible player, it's just a matter of figuring out the chemistry.

I personally feel he works best in a diamond/ twin striker setup, but preferably with someone like Origi or Benteke who brings complementary skills to the forward line. Next best alternative would be 4-3-3 with wide men to support him breaking forward or to put dangerous balls into the box (eg. Ojo perfect for this)

I'm not so sure he's at his best in a 4-2-3-1 and lone striker role. Origi's physicality/ hold up play would give him the edge in this setup IMO.

5.) 25 Apr 2016 12:02:11
He's scoring at a rate of a a goal every 93 minutes for Klopp, that's better than Aguero. At that rate I don't really care how selfish he is.

6.) 25 Apr 2016 12:03:24
It's a bit harsh - no sorry, its just wrong - to blame a player losing the ball in the attacking 3rd directly for a goal. That was the last time we had possession - that was it. They had to pass an entire team before scoring.

7.) 25 Apr 2016 14:11:02
So now Studge is to blame for the second goal, now, right? Some of the things I read on here is just comical. He lost the ball 60 yards up the field for heaven`s sakes. And what were the other players like Moreno doing getting caught out of position for the umpteenth time doing? Why were the Mids not tracking back to win the second ball? Stop with the blame game because it`s getting old.

Did anyone notice how Rashford clipped himself to get Fabinho a card, and the resulting free kick Casemiro put in the net, albeit being offside it would have been had to take that one.

Perception, I cannot understand your point why should we crash out of the group stages like a coward dog. What if at the end we are not able to win the league and how is Sterling better than Shaqiri?
